    Great coaching, great overall experience

Our highest level of recommendation is due for this team of charismatic Italians who are wonderful surf trainers with a lot of energy, patience, love for the sport, and a sunny attitude to life. We — a family with two teenager children — liked them so much, and their level-appropriate, differentiated instruction made such a difference for us, that we decided to go back for an extra class with Leo right before we flew out of Tenerife.

Great teachers, engaged, great organisation 🫶🏻

I had two kite lessons intermediate with Kosta and theory input by Umberto. He has a special simulator to show you movements on the ground. What a great idea! Also they have great organisation, because of them i had my best last day in Médano ❤️.
The spot itself is quite challenging, so make sure to get a good school like this one.
I know Nico, another instructor of the school, from last year and this year with Kosta- both helped me a lot! Great analysing and great tips. So the school has great techers!
    Thank you 😊

    Brilliant experience as beginners

Couldn’t recommend a better kitesurf school in El Medano as beginners. Franco, a very sympatic guy, learned us the ins & outs of the sport in a calm, laid back way. Although we didn’t have too much luck with the weather (not very windy during our stay), Franco has helped us acquire a solid basis on which we will continue to build here in Belgium. Will definitely book again or even just give them a visit next time over in El Medano.

    simply PERFECT

What an amazing moment we spent thanks to Sergio and Jan!

30Nudos is the third school we are trying (not that we are so bad…but wherever we go in the world, we experience bad wind condition that does not allow us to get a full package experience!). … and I can tell you by far that they have been the best teachers by far (while others were good!)

My partner and I have complete different learning styles. Sergio and Jan adapted their teaching style to each of us, maximizing the learning process…and even making it so much fun! Pure Joy while I was a bit anxious before starting.

The place is not the easiest due to waves and inconstant wind, but I have never felt unsafe. Sergio has been by my side as much as I needed it and always put safety first. I had good reflex when got in trouble while some students from other schools did not have that luck!

On top of handling well my kite, I also had the chance to understand better ”why” and ”how” things were working. It improved a lot my understanding and handling of it actually!

I contacted a lot of schools in El Medano. 30Nudos was maybe few euros more, but I do not regret a minute and a penny… SAFETY, PLEASURE, KINDNESS, QUICK LEARNING PROCESS made it unforgettable. ..I wish we can come back soon and continue our classes together!

Thank you for making our day unforgettable guys!

    Best kitesurf lessons in Tenerife!

We took a 9h lesson and were really excited about it. Carlos and Sofia were incredibly nice and made sure we got the best wind conditions to learn, adjusting the time we were having the lessons.
The spot is amazing, the staff even more. The instructor was very patient, explaining carefully and made sure we always were safe. All that made us learn very quickly and had very good sensations on the board – but please note, the conditions were amazing and not everyone manages to get on the board after 9h.
I woukd say without hesitation the best kitesurf school in el Medano and in Tenerife
Un saludo a Sofia, Carlos, Rafa y uno muy especial a Igor!

    First Time Kitesurfing

I went kitesurfing for the first time October 2021. My instructor Chris was very professional, patient, and helpful. I signed up for lessons for two days, two hours each. I would recommend signing up for three days if time permits. The first day we spent working on land exercises, technique, and safety. Kitesurfing is an extreme sport – so safety is very important. The second day we spent on the water which was quite fun.

There were many other kitesurfers as well as windsurfers on el Medano – Windsurfers took up a different part of the beach. Before you go on the beach, you get a wetsuit and can put your stuff in a locker. Once done, you can call a taxi nearby – there is no Uber or Lyft in Tenerife. Afterwards, Chris sent notes on my lessons, the equipment we used, other beaches, and tips on how to improve. Would recommend Chris and this school!

Relaxed with good equipment and a great service

Great rental place with supportive, friendly staff. A nice alternative to TWS if you prefer it a bit more relaxed and less commercial. Prices are excellent for the quality of the equipment but the choice can be limited so make sure you book in advance or arrive early in the day. Showers available inside. Perfect location right on the beach. They also do courses.

This place is also known as Bahia Kitesurf. They also do that and they rent out Sups.

Felt cared from the first second. A lot of the best brands to choose from, i got a great recommendation for the material to use in different conditions, always felt to have the best fitting gear on the water. I also evolved a lot in windsurfing getting a lot of tips for riding technique. Very friendly and funny staff! Thx TWS!

attenzione, controllate bene con lo staff ogni minimo difetto

Aug 2021

I am windsurfer from long time, more or less 35 years. I rent windsurf on Maui, Pozo, Fuerteventura (Rene’ Egli), Torbole, Sardinia, Never had a problem. I rent from TWS a board with sail 3.2 for my sons, the wind it is too strong for my sails. We do not do the usual check with the staff. The board it is ok, just a few very small scratches, but I think this is normal and not necessary to write it or noted to staff. On the end of day i returned the board on the same condition. Not any contact with rocks (El Medano it is a beach) or boom, I am extra sure don’t touch the board. The staff told me it is necessary to pay becuase there is the smals scratches on the board. Very smals signs difficult to see and just present. I’m sure they were already there, the staff it is sure the board it is like new before to rent.
Attentions: Check with staff the board and sail before to rent. And write each problem on the rent documents or take a pictures . If you don’t check total defect it is your problem.

they give you the board quickly, no control together is expected

This is the place for windsurf! we had an amazing experience at TWS.
You can try different boards, this is especially great because there are many brands (not only 1 or 2 as you usually can see from centers)
And the best is the team. They are really welcoming, they helped us for everything, good tips, I don’t know how it could be better!
Thanks again to Guillermo and Robin! hope to see them soon again

Top crew and top gears

Aug 2020 • Couples

I spent 1 week in Cabezo and rented my Windsurf gear at TWS. The gears are top notch, in excellent condition, there are various brands, all sizes of boards and sails and enough for the riders.
The team is the perfect mix of professionnalism and relaxed attitude, very well organized and friendly and they have very good advices.
Without a doubt, the best center for windsurf I have seen since the 20 years I am windsurfing around the globe.

Add to that the excellent wind and waves in Medano during the week (on a non crowed spot because of Covid. ..) and you get a wonderful week!

A good place to rent and learn to windsurf.

Rented a board, sail and 1 lesson.
The lesson was held in English for an hour. Everything was clearly explained and shown. After this lesson, I could practice on my own.
Helped to drag the board to the sea, set the sail.
A bit pricey for me, but worth it!
    Thank you!

hooray! I finally learned how to ride!

For 2 weeks of rest in Tenerife in June, it blew 10 days! We chose this school on the recommendation of friends. The best school on the beach, a very cool team of professionals! I was taught by Sophia, my instructor and part-time very friendly hostess of the school. Everyone on this island seems to know her. Former champion, and now a very attentive instructor! In general, a bunch of emotions and only positive! Everything was taught, everything was shown, I started carving, returning to the same place on the beach, doing self-rescue, and even started trying to ride on the front edge and make fashionable turns) uhhha! In general, the vacation exceeded all expectations, and the plan was exceeded!!! Cheers cheers! Thanks to the coolest kite instructor, Sofia Rodriguez)))

    Station, not rental

The conditions for skiing are not the easiest. Strong chop during the wind. Almost impossible without a water start. The current to the shore, but if you hesitate a lot, then the path to the shore will be through kites or rocks (I have not seen such).

Unlike other windsurfing spots in Tenerife, this place looks like a station, not a rental, which is nice. The only thing missing is coffee, tea and TV 🙂 during the rest. The conditions are spartan in terms of the fact that the equipment must be carried far.

Naish boards and sails surprised me, but completely satisfied. The instructor Raik is wonderful.

Marion leads the process strictly, but definitely ideologically and fairly. It is important to give quality service, and not snatch more. No one will let them out on the water until they are convinced of their ability to cope with the elements 🙂 The children were given surfboards for free during my skating.

The sail I torn was very humanely appreciated. By the way, no one on the island has equipment insurance specifically specified.

The Atlantic Ocean, which washes the island, brings with it clear water and even waves. On the one side of the island – on the east coast – the winds always blow, on the other – southwest, in the tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Las Americas there are almost no winds, so it’s great to engage in various extreme water sports – from pure surfing to kitesurfing, windsurfing and yachting.

Mecca of kitesurfing and windsurfing – El Medano!

In the south-east is one of the most windy spots in Europe, the mecca of kitesurfing and windsurfing – El Médano. The Mecca of El Medano and La Tejita are not only because the wind blows here more than 300 days a year, but also because they have the longest natural sand beaches in Tenerife. In summer, the wind here is without interruption, blowing up to 12-15 m/s, in winter the wind is weaker, blowing 8-10 m/s.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing are as comparable as skiing and snowboarding. Although the windsurf and the kite are ridden in the same places, they ride with different equipment, approach and philosophy. Windsurfing has been around for a long time, Tenerife has a lot of windsurfers with 20 or more years of experience. It’s easy to get on a windsurfer and start planing, but the further you want to progress in it, the more difficult it will be! Kitesurfing is a fairly young type of water extreme, but it has been developing very dynamically in recent years. A kite – a kite – allows a person to very quickly learn not only to plan, but also to jump up 2-3 meters or more. The time of learning and progress here is many times faster than in windsurfing. Pro riders – about kiters – perform spectacular and beautiful tricks and freestyle contests always become a good show. To learn how to jump simple elements in kitesurfing, a month of practice is enough, provided there are good instructors at the initial stage.

    Paragliding in Tenerife

Now let’s move from the water spots of Tenerife to the mountains. Tenerife is unique in that this island has an amazing variety of climatic zones – pine forests begin at 1000 meters above sea level, and at 2 thousand meters you find yourself on a volcano. By the way, the famous science fiction blockbuster Star Wars was filmed in Teide National Park. Here, high in the mountains, thousands of meters above the ocean, eagles, vultures, and also… paragliders soar!

Just think, soar like a bird, surveying the entire island from a bird’s eye view! Didn’t you have dreams as a child that you were flying? With the help of a paraglider, you can fly in reality! You climb a mountainside, spread out your canopy, take five to eight steps and… how to describe that amazing feeling of free-floating? Flying in the south of the island, we view the beaches of Las Americas and Adeje, Mount Conde, the deep gorge of the Devil.

Well, in the north of Tenerife, next to the observatory at the foot of the Teide volcano, there is the highest start of the island for paragliding – Izaña. Taking off from a height of 2300 meters, you cross the entire Orotava valley and land on the beach in Puerto de La Cruz.

And do not think that in order to enjoy paragliding, you can only take a paragliding course! No, thanks to a tandem paraglider, you can fly with an experienced instructor who will control the wing, and you – with bated breath – look down on the stunning landscapes of Tenerife!

    Trekking in Tenerife

And of course, if there are mountains, then there is also trekking! The most interesting from the point of view of hiking in Tenerife are 3 mountain (by the way, they are all volcanic) massifs: Teide National Park and Teno Natural Parks (northwest of the island) and Anaga (northeast).

Teno is known to trekkers all over the world for its breathtaking gorges and cliffs almost 600 meters high. The most famous gorge of Tenerife – Barranco de Masca is also located here. Walking here is very interesting and filled with impressions. You descend along a narrow, steep path into a deep canyon, crossing a stormy mountain stream more than once, until you reach a cozy and beautiful bay, perfect for picnicking, swimming and sunbathing. Boats run from the bay to the village of Los Gigantes, and therefore you can do without the exhausting climb back.

The Anaga Natural Park is the oldest geological zone in Tenerife – the thousandth local mountains are interesting for their sheer cliffs, ridges-knives and deep gorges. The mountain highway Carretera Alta de Anaga winds along the main ridge, from which roads go down to lost mountain villages.

And, of course, the most impressive and action-packed mountain range of Tenerife is the Teide National Park. Here you will see the alpine flora and fauna of the Canary Islands, numerous volcanic eruptions of lava of different colors, interspersed with pumice and obsidian crystals.

    About this book

This open access book explores El Hierro Island, which is geologically the youngest of the Canary Islands (Spain). Having registered its latest volcanic eruption in 2011-2012, it is an oceanic subtropical island with low population pressure and a largely unchanged natural landscape. Accordingly, a great geodiversity of volcanic morphologies and erosion processes has been preserved. In addition, half of the land is protected as a Biosphere Reserve and as a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the island is pursuing energy self-sufficiency. Local tourism is a sustainable activity, as the main attractions are either diving or hiking through the island’s various volcanic landscapes. Covering these and other aspects, and using accessible language, the book will appeal to scientists specialized in geotourism, active leisure entrepreneurs, and members of the general public interested in volcanic geoheritage and geotourism.

Fauna and flora of El Hierro: a unique island

The island of El Hierro, like the rest of the Canary archipelago, has a great variety of animal and plant species, many of which are endemic to both the Canary Islands and the island itself. In this article we will talk about the fauna and flora of El Hierro, as peculiar as the island of the meridian.

Volcanoes, lava flows, lush forests of Canary pine and laurisilva, trees that kneel before the wind, steep cliffs, relaxing natural pools …, this is El Hierro. An enigmatic and breathtaking island, refuge of different species of animals and endemic plants.

Flora of El Hierro: a symbol of the island’s identity

In the highest areas of the island of El Hierro you can find laurel forests, survivors of ancient prehistoric forests. These are dominated by ferns, laurels and mosses. Next is the area populated by oaks and beeches known as Fayal.

The Canary Island pine or pinus canariensis is one of the most impressive specimens of coniferous forest. Its ability to resist fire thanks to its thick bark makes it the most resistant of the endemic plant species of the Canary Islands.

But in terms of natural beauty, the juniper forest is equally beautiful and dramatic. The sabinar is a forest of junipers that has the particularity of having been shaped by centuries of intense winds in the highest areas of the island. In addition, these impressive trees have been protected since 1975.

The lower areas of the island have a drier climate than the higher areas, so the vegetation is quite scarce. The most representative species of these areas are the tabaibas and cardones. Also some specimens of agaves, piteras and tuneras, introduced in the Canary Islands from America.

The fauna of El Hierro, peculiar and unique

For its part, the fauna of the island of El Hierro includes species such as the wild canary, which despite not standing out for the appearance of its plumage, grayish green, does impress with its deep song. Among the bird species, we also find tits, kestrels, pigeons and crows, in addition to the particular finch of El Hierro. In the coastal areas, some varieties of gulls proliferate and, likewise, you can also find some specimens of osprey. Of course, the island is an important passage point for different migratory species during their long flights.

The insects of the island include a great variety of butterflies and beetles. Also a large group of spiders of which the only one to be feared is the well-known black widow, the only venomous animal of El Hierro and whose bite can be lethal if not treated properly. We can distinguish more than 5 000 different insect species on this island alone.

The protagonist of the fauna of El Hierro is undoubtedly the giant lizard of El Hierro or Galliota Simonyi, whose largest specimen to date reached a meter and a half from head to tail and which was considered extinct for a while. A variant of this well-known giant lizard was found in 1975, although its maximum size does not exceed 70 centimeters in length and they are currently under protection, bred in a special enclosure for future repopulation.

If you are thinking of visiting the island of El Hierro or you are already on the island we leave you below several links that may be of interest to enjoy the trip in the most complete way: The Garoé tree, the sacred tree of El Hierro; Scuba diving in El Hierro, a marine paradise; What to see in El Hierro: route for a weekend.

        • The Canary Islands is the most remote autonomous region in Spain, located off the northwestern coast of Africa.

The Canaries is an amazing place with a special atmosphere, indescribable landscapes of the tropics, dunes, volcanoes, waterfalls, clean beaches and azure waters. The capitals of the autonomy are the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, replacing each other every four years. nine0006 Photo: Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Canary Islands is a heavenly place where you can relax all year round. Almost no European beach resort can afford such luxury.

7 islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera. Most often, tourists choose the first two – the infrastructure is appropriate. However, each of them will be remembered by guests for a long time. These are amazing mountains, the Teide volcano, black sand on the beaches, Martian landscapes in the Timanfaya park, sheer cliffs of Los Organos and junipers of an unusual shape and even ancient pyramids. nine0006

See beautiful places in the Canary Islands in this video:

Tenerife hosts the most popular and largest carnival in the Old World. For two weeks in February, everyday life stops and everyone becomes an active participant in the colorful show.

Twice a year there are sales seasons in stores – in the winter from January 6 to the end of February and throughout the summer. At this time, there is a chance to buy clothes and accessories of luxury brands for ridiculous money.

          Geography of the Canary Islands

          Photo: Timanfaya National Park

Canary Islands is an Atlantic archipelago formed by 7 volcanic islands:

          1. Tenerife is the largest island with the most exotic and diverse landscape. Against the backdrop of cacti, banana plantations and forests, the Teide volcano rises majestically (3,718 m). In the south, the beaches are covered with special black volcanic sand, there are beaches with white sand brought from the Sahara;
          2. Fuerteventura – the second largest island, which is famous for its endless beaches and the opportunity to retire; nine0325
          3. Gran Canaria – this island is called “a continent in miniature” for its variety of landscapes from luxurious beaches, parks and to the dune desert;
          4. Lanzarote – it is called the “island of fire-breathing mountains” because of the three hundred volcanoes on its territory;
          5. El Hierro – the smallest and most western island, where you can see unusual coasts and landscapes, groves of Barbary arborvitae and the “end of the world”;
          6. La Palma, the greenest corner of the Canary Islands for hikers, whose beaches have both regular and black sand; nine0325
          7. La Gomera is an interesting island full of mountain peaks and hiking trails.

There are 4 national parks in the Canary Islands that stagger the imagination:

          1. Caldera Taburiente (Palma Island) – a grandiose crater 10 km in diameter, served as the last stronghold of the Guanches overtaken by the conquistadors;
          2. Garajonay (O. Homer) – laurel forests mysterious in the fog, which remained from the ancient subtropical forest;
          3. Teide (Tenerife Island) – the highest mountain-volcano in Spain (3,718 m) in a huge pit where rare plants grow; nine0325
          4. Timanfaya (Lanzarote) is a land of fire-breathing mountains, craters and eye-catching Martian landscapes.

          Climate

The trade winds constantly carry warm air from the Moroccan coast – this is the edge of a year-round resort. Throughout the year, the coast is moderately hot and dry, and you can cool off in the mountains, or while swimming in the ocean. Sometimes an unpleasant suffocating and dusty wind blows from Africa – sirocco (kalima).

How to get there and get around in place

Photo: Map of the island of Tenerife

There are direct and connecting flights to the islands. Usually fly to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. A round-trip ticket from Moscow costs about 500 euros with a transfer and up to 1000 euros for a direct flight.

Photo: Map of the island of Gran Canaria

From St. Petersburg to the Canary Islands can only be reached with transfers for about 600 euros per person.

          Photo: Map of Fuerteventura

Ferries run between the islands. There are almost always empty seats, and a car is also transported for an additional fee. The cost of a ferry ticket is 30-40 euros one way, depending on the route. nine0006 Photo: Detailed map of Lanzarote

The local air carrier Binter Canarias also flies. Airplane tickets are not much more expensive – 40-60 euros.

Photo: Detailed map of the island of El Hierro

To conveniently travel to the sights and beaches in the Canary Islands, it is easier to rent a car. This pleasure will cost about 25-30 euros per day.

          Why go

Canary Islands – 7 islands with 4 picturesque national parks and many UNESCO protected areas, as well as amazing beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Here everyone will find the perfect vacation for themselves: beach, surfing , diving, exciting excursions, delicious cuisine, wine and fruits. nine0006

          When to go

The Canaries are waiting for tourists all year round, but the best time for a comfortable trip is from May to October. Tourists whose countries have harsh winters choose autumn-winter trips to the Canary Islands to hide from the cold.

          Culture of the Canary Islands

Photo: The painting depicts the natives of Tenerife – Guanches

Initially, Guanches lived on the islands – light-skinned blondes or brunettes, who were subsequently conquered by the Spaniards in the 15th century, and then exterminated or sold into slavery. The small part that remained mixed with the Spaniards and lost their language. nine0006

Interesting! The Guanches are the natives of the island of Tenerife, and on the other islands lived mahorers, aurites, bimbache, since there was no connection between the islands until the 15th century.

Colonial buildings (15th century) are preserved in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Other cities were formed already in the 20th century from small fishing villages.

The main source of income is tourism, but there are others, for example, the layer of volcanic ash turned out to be excellent soil for special grape varieties, from which Canarian wine is then made. nine0006

          1. Paella with seafood. According to travelers, the best paella is prepared in El Rincon del Arroz restaurant in Tenerife (Avenida Sabandenos S/N | Los Cristianos).
          2. Jacket potatoes (papas arrugadas), they are adored here – on the menu. Served with mojo sauce. Moreover, each institution has its own recipe for its preparation. On the island of Gran Canaria, the most delicious papas arrugadas are served at the El Senador restaurant (Paseo Faro del, 2, 35100, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria). nine0325
          3. Gofio (gofio) – flour from fried grains of barley, corn, sometimes beans. Flour products are prepared from it, which are served with dishes instead of bread. A delicious snack is served at the Chip-Chipi Restaurant on La Palma (Lugar Juan Mayor 42).
          4. Fried in olive oil with spices lamb or goat meat (Asado carne de cabra) – in Fuerteventura, this dish is recommended to try in a place called Kiosco Bar Las Naves (Urb. Risco Prieto, calle El Henequen, Corralejo, La Oliva). nine0325
          5. Rancho canario – thick and fatty meat soup of beef, chicken and rabbit with chickpeas. On the island of Lanzarote, it is most often ordered at the Patio Canario restaurant (Plaza de Pueblo, Avenida Islas Canarias).

          Cuisine

Traditional dishes: Rancho canario bright thick soup, carne de fiesta marinated meat, amazing bienmesabe dessert of lemons, almonds, cinnamon and egg yolks, and fresh seafood. The Guanches left their culinary secret to the Canaries – gofio. This is not a standalone dish, but the basis for hundreds of dishes, made from ground roasted cereals and beans. Literally everything is prepared from gofio – from soup to ice cream. nine0006

The capital city of spain: What is the Capital of Spain?

What is the Capital of Spain?

Madrid is the capital of Spain and the administrative center of the Madrid region. It is located in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula.

Madrid is the largest city in Spain and the fifth most populous city in Europe after Istanbul, London, Berlin, and Paris.

    Where is Madrid?

According to the excavation, the human traces of the region and the history of Madrid extend back to the paleolithic time. There are trivial small settlements here that belong to the Roman settlement of the 2nd century BC and the next Visigoths.

According to recent researches and a theory, the name of Madrid originates from the name Matrice given to this region by these early settlements.

When did Madrid Become the Capital?

For the first time, Henry III of Castile built a palace in the El Pardo district outside Madrid today, early in the 1400’s.

In 1561, Philip II of Spain moved the Royal Courts to Madrid, a small and insignificant settlement, and shortly after, Madrid was declared the capital. Thus Madrid’s population has reached 30,000. Soon new palaces, churches, monasteries, and roads were built in Madrid. A lot of noble, wealthy and statesmen settled in Madrid with the attraction of the new capital.

With the discovery of the New World in the Middle Ages and the gold and wealth from South America, Madrid has grown and enriched. In the 18th Century, during the reign of Charles II of Spain, Madrid was renewed and the landscape had a European appearance. For this reason, Charles II of Spain has the appellation of “Madrid’s Best Mayor”.

The history of Madrid has recently been quite turbulent and gray. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are the most severe periods of economic crisis in Spain. This crisis triggered the political turmoil of the country and eventually led to the Spanish Civil War.

Between 1936 and 1939, according to some sources, over 600,000 people lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War, one of the world’s greatest civil wars between the fascist General Franco from the radical right and the Republican left. The result was Franco’s victory and the 40-year dictatorship started.

Franco proclaimed all the state institutions in Madrid and gave Madrid some privileges according to other cities.

With the death of Franco in 1978, the dictatorship ended in Spain, the Juan Carlos I of Spain came back to the country, and the time of new democratic constitution and today’s parliamentary democratic Spain has begun.

    Features of Madrid

In addition to its rich historical heritage, it is also a vital cultural and artistic center. It is in recent history that it has gained a dominant role in the development and in the economy of the country. The area of the metropolitan area is 1,020 km² and its population is over 4 million.

Madrid, one of the highest capitals of Europe, is at an altitude of 635 m on a wavy plateau of the Central Plateau. Sudden temperature changes are common because of their high position and the influence of air masses. The summer months are suffocating and the temperature sometimes reaches 38 ° C. The average annual temperature varies between 2 ° and 24 ° C.

Contributors to the banking and insurance-based economy are administrative services, transport network, and tourism income. After World War II, industry developed and manufacturing sector increased.

Major industrial goods include railway and tractor construction, conversion metallurgy, construction of electrical appliances. Moreover, food industry, textile, chemical, plastics processing, optical goods, automobile, and truck engines are important.

Important Places to See in Madrid

Madrid, is a city of history, thanks to the Muslims who went to Toledo in the 12th century. The city lags behind Barcelona in tourist terms. However, Neo-Classical buildings, 24 hours alive streets, popular restaurants, and lively nightlife are quite attractive to tourists. At the beginning of the places to see in Madrid; Prado Museum, Plaza Mayor and Royal Palace of Madrid.

Toledo – the ancient capital of Spain. Spain in Russian

The influence of Toledo not only on Spanish but also on European culture is so great that it is almost impossible to describe it in a few words. The history of this city is a dialogue of cultures. At 19In 86, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

From the history of the city

There is no reliable information about when exactly the history of Toledo began. A city called Toletum has been known since the 2nd century AD when it was conquered by the Roman general Marcus Fluvius. The beginning of the history of Roman Toledo is symbolized by the phrase of the commander: Toletum, ibi parva urbs erat, sed loco munita (“Toledo is a small city, but conveniently located for protection”), transmitted in the work of the historian Titus Livius and became winged. It is no coincidence that several centuries after the fall of the great empire, Toledo became one of the main outposts of the Reconquista. nine0005

Before the advent of the Arabs, who conquered the city in 711, Toledo was the “royal city” of the Visigoths, the capital of the barbarian state. The Muslim city of Tolaytola became Christian Toledo in 1085, it was conquered from the Moors by the Castilian king Alphonse VI. From that moment began the most significant period in the history of the city.

In the era of the Reconquista, Toledo becomes the capital of Spain, it was rightly called the “city of three cultures”. Christian, Muslim and Jewish culture intersected here in a bizarre way. Toledo became the symbol of the Reconquista. nine0005

The further history of Toledo is the history of the imperial city, gradually losing ground first to Valladolid, then to Madrid. At the same time, the city remained one of the most important cities for Spanish history and culture. Today, Toledo, a relatively small city of about 80,000 people, is the capital of the province of Castile-La Mancha.

Toledo is a city-museum that has preserved the features of a Spanish medieval city to this day. Just approaching it and looking at the panorama of the city from the banks of the Tagus River, you already feel the spirit of antiquity and look forward to unraveling the mysteries of history. nine0005

Bisagra Gate and other routes to Toledo

It has always been thought that the best way to approach Toledo is from the Northern Plain. The Arabs called it light – bab sagra. Perhaps that is why the gates of Bisagra, the main gates of the city, built in different places at different times, were named so.

The old gate, which dates back to the Arab era, today is called the gate of Alphonse VI. It is believed that it was through this gate that the royal troops entered, liberating the city from the Moors. nine0005

80 meters below the old gate is another, called the New Bisagra Gate. Their construction began on the orders of Charles V. The construction of these gates is associated with the names of the Spanish architects father and son de Vergara. Nicolás de Vergara the elder began the construction of the gate, and his son completed the work in 1575 with the upper tier and the spired towers.

The Bisagra Gate is the main, but not the only, entrance to the city. A little further in the city wall, at the bridge of St. Martin, you can see another gate of Toledo. nine0005

They lead to the Jewish Quarter, to the historical part of the city, where the representatives of the persecuted people lived in the Middle Ages. In Arabic Toledo, this gate was called “Bab al-Hud”, they were also called the Jewish Gate and the Gate of the Hawthorn (Puerta del Cambrón).

Another road in Toledo leads up a steep slope. This is an inconvenient, but very important way to the city, because on this side is Extremadura, a strategically and economically important region of Spain, with which communication was necessary. The Gate of the Sun is located here. Bishop Ternorio initiated their construction at the end of the 14th century. The purpose of building the new gate was to make it easier to enter Toledo from this side, as the path through the old Majordomo Gate was not suitable for horses. nine0005

The gate was built in the Mudéjar style, in which Arab architects worked in the territories conquered by the Spaniards, and are considered one of its best examples. Mudéjars were the Arab inhabitants of Christian territories during the era of the Reconquista.

      Bridges of Toledo

The Alcantara Bridge leading to the Gate of the Sun is much older than the Gate itself. It was built by the Romans and connected the city with Merida and Zaragoza (the Roman city of Caesaraugusta). The poet and historian Venantius Fortunatus mentions the bridge in his poem, narrating a story from the history of the Visigoths in Toledo. The bridge was destroyed during the siege of the city by Abdurrahman III and rebuilt in the Moorish era, which is why it retained its Arabic name. Al-Kantara means “bridge” in Arabic. nine0005

St. Martin’s Bridge, already mentioned above, leads to the Hawthorn Gate. It was built during the Arab era. The massive tower, part of the fortress wall, from where the bridge begins, attracts attention. This tower is called the “Bath of the Concubine” and from the point of view of architecture is one of the pillars of the bridge.

St. Martin’s Bridge was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, at the end of the XIII century it was destroyed during the civil strife of Christian monarchs. The reconstruction of the bridge is also associated with the name of Bishop Ternorio, an outstanding figure in the history of the city. nine0005

      Alcazar of Toledo

And what is that towering up there on the hill? The quadrangular structure, ascetic and just as elegant, crowns the ancient city like a crown. This is the Alcazar of Toledo.

The Alcazar is both a fortress and a ruler’s palace. There are such facilities in many cities in Spain. The Alcazar of Toledo is one of the most famous, it served as the residence of the Visigothic, Arab, Spanish rulers of Toledo. nine0005

From the Alcazar, built by the Romans, the development of Toledo began, from which the walls framing the city began to be erected. The ancient Alcazar of the Romans and the Visigoths remained in the annals of history. What can be seen today is the legacy of the Spanish rulers. Only the southwestern gate remained from the Arabs. Alphonse VI almost completely rebuilt the castle after Toledo became Castilian, and the Alcazar acquired the modern look of the royal palace in the era of Charles V.

nine0004 Alcazar survived the tragic events of modern and recent history of Spain. In 1710, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a fire broke out in the palace, and later the building was again set on fire by the French during the Napoleonic Wars. The main tragedy of the Spanish history of the 20th century – the civil war – caused significant destruction of the historical monument. In 1936, fierce battles were fought in Toledo, and military operations, as you know, rarely spare cultural monuments.

Costa Teguise, Canary Islands – January Weather

What’s the weather like in Costa Teguise in January

Costa Teguise, Spain, is a small town situated on the eastern coastline of Lanzarote. Although, Lanzarote is a part of the Spanish Canary Islands chain in the Atlantic Ocean, the island is actually closer to Northern Africa, namely Morocco, than it is to mainland Spain and the town enjoys the same warm weather as the African continent.

January is both the coldest month in Costa Teguise in terms of air and sea temperatures and one of the wettest, but these conditions are still preferable over a typical British January.

Rather than the sub zero temperatures and icy storms, Costa Teguise sees temperatures range from a pleasant 14°C overnight to a warm 20 during the day, similar to Lanzarote’s capital Arrecife. Sea temperatures hover around the 19 degree mark, while rainfall is a modest 30mm on average across the month.

    Temperature

January is characterized by essentially constant daily high temperatures, with daily highs rising to 20°C throughout the month, with the temperature only dropping below 18°C one day in ten.

The daylight hours at this time of year tend to stay constant with the shortest day of the month being January 1st with 10:09 hours of daylight, whilst the longest day is January 31st with 10:48 hours of daylight.

Furthermore, the cloud cover at this time is generally low. The median cloud cover in Costa Teguise is a partly cloudy 45% and does not vary substantially over the course of the month. On January 16th, a representative day, the sky is clear or mostly clear 31% of the time, while it is only 16% likely to be overcast.

    Rainfall

You also won’t have to worry too much about serious rainfall during January even though it is supposed to be one of the wettest months of the year! On average, the probability that some form of precipitation will be observed is only a mere 22% with little variation over the course of the month. However, if it does rain in January the most common forms of precipitation are drizzle, moderate rain and light rain.

    Humidity

During January the relative humidity typically fluctuates between a mildly humid 57% and a very humid 89%, rarely dropping below 39% or reaching 100%. On average the air is driest around January 28th in Costa Teguise, at which time the relative humidity drops below a mildly humid 64% three days out of four. On the other hand, the air is likely to be most humid around January 1st, where humidity levels are expected to exceed 84% three days out of four.

    Wind

Costa Teguise is also renowned for being a windy area, however, it is very unlikely it will affect your holiday. Over the course of January typical wind speeds vary from 5 mph to 18 mph, which is considered as a light to moderate breeze. At this time of year the wind is most often coming from the north, followed by the northeast.

    Costa Teguise Hotels for January

Apartamentos Santa Rosa are located just a 10 minute walk from the beachfront and offer rooms from £23 per night. Rooms are basic yet comfortable, but the main draw of this complex is the adjoining leisure centre, with bowling lanes, mini golf, soft play areas and swimming pools. The outdoor pool is even heated during the winter. Apartments sleep up to 6 guests, so are suitable for families and large groups.

If you want a relaxing holiday in the heart of Costa Teguise you may want to stay at Siroco Serenity Solo Adultos. This adults only holiday complex is just a couple of minutes walk from Playa de las Cucharas Beach and offers comfortable apartments with private balconies and an outdoor swimming pool.

The three-star Mansion Nazaret is another accommodation option to take into consideration. This cosy complex offers a heated outdoor swimming pool in the winter months and each apartment comes fitted with free Wi-Fi and flat screen satellite TVs. Plus, the Mansion is located just 300m away from Lanzarote’s Playa Cucharas Beach.

    Costa Teguise Beach for January

At this time of year the idea of taking a dip in the sea may not sound that appealing, but believe it or not the sea temperature is usually around 19 degrees during January.

Costa Teguise is also very quiet at this time of year so you will virtually have the beach to yourself. If you’re looking for somewhere where you can get a winter tan you may want to head to Caleta Caballo Beach. This tiny beach, only 60m wide features fine white sand and an idyllic setting. It is a little more sheltered here and can be accessed by bus or car as there is a parking area right next to the beach.

    Bars and Restaurants

Jesters Bar is one of the most well known and well visited bars in the town. This English-run establishment is especially popular during the early hours, as it’s one of the only bars in Costa Teguise that remains open until 4am. There’s a nightly DJ and dance floor, although for those looking for a quieter time, there’s also a relaxed area with TVs showing British sporting events. As well as beers, ciders, wines and cocktails, this place is also known for its range of shots, including the unique ‘Jester Cake’.

However, if you want a more authentic “Canarian” experience you should definitely try Restaurante El Navarro in Costa Teguise. This eatery serves local Spanish and Canarian cuisine with a modern twist. This restaurant is so good it has previously been voted the top restaurant in Costa Teguise on Trip Advisor and ranks highly in the whole of Lanzarote.

Another restaurant that’s worth a try is La Tabla. This place offers seriously delicious tapas in an authentic Spanish setting. The restaurant also features an outdoor terrace which is perfect to sit out on a warm winter day with a cup of coffee.

To celebrate the New Year why not head to Hennessey’s Irish bar, located in Costa Teguise. This lively pub boasts stunning views out onto the beach and ocean. The bar also stocks a great array of beers and ales from Guinness to Baileys, if you’re feeling a little bit peckish they also serve snacks and meals throughout the day.

Things to do in Costa Teguise in January

On a rainy day, the Fundación César Manrique is a great way to spend an afternoon. The home of famed Spanish artist César Manrique is designed in the contemporary art style he was renowned for.  A selection of his most famous works can be seen in the adjoining gallery. Manrique was born just down the road in Arrecife, but lived at the Fundación during his adult life. The property not only gives a look at Manrique’s public life but also his personal life and is particularly suited to lovers of modern or abstract art.

As January boasts a warm climate at this time of year, with limited rainfall you may see it as the perfect chance to have a round of golf. The Costa Teguise Golf Club features 18 challenging holes designed by John Harris in 1978. The course includes over 3000 palm trees and offers an extinct volcano as its backdrop. The overall design of the course is soft and varied with many obstacles such as sand bunkers and sloping hills.

On the other hand, if you are here with the little ones you may want to take them to the Lanzarote Aquarium. This place is the largest aquarium in the whole of the Canary Islands, featuring more than one million litres of water distributed into 33 different tanks. There are superb views of hundreds of marine species from across the globe including sharks and sea turtles.

The Lanzarote Active Club offers unique hiking excursions around the island of Lanzarote where you can learn about local flora and fauna, as well as the island’s interesting volcanic history. There are also guided walks offered by Lanzarote Active Club and boat excursions, bird watching trips and wine experiences.

    Dates for the diary

What better way to nurse that hangover or relax from the previous night by spending the day by the beach on New Year’s Day. Las Cucharas Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the area, found right by Costa Teguise. The beach offers clear, calm waters and golden sand, making it perfect for sunbathing.

Dia de Los Reyes (The Day of Kings) is celebrated annually on 5th January. Every year are various parades held throughout Lanzarote to celebrate the special occasion. These include three camel riders, dressed as the Three Wise Kings who throw sweets to children. The largest procession is held in Lanzarote’s capital Arrecife, where the event usually commences at 6pm.

5 reasons to holiday in Costa Teguise

Nestled in a coastal cutaway in the north-eastern quarter of Lanzarote is a delightfully laid-back little beach town called Costa Teguise. Many visitors to the easternmost island of the Canaries may miss out on the opportunity to explore this gorgeous seaside community because of that instinctual urge to hit the capital, Arrecife.Don’t fall into this trap. There are so many reasons why you should stay in Costa Teguise – the quieter, more cultural saturated cousin of the main city – that we…

Is it worth going to Dubai in the dead of winter? Find out about air and water temperature, precipitation in January 2023. Reviews of tourists about the weather in Dubai: is it possible to swim and sunbathe, what to do, how to dress.

    Water and air temperature

January is the rainiest month of the year. However, the resort receives only 11mm of rainfall and one rainy day. In an arid climate, moisture from heaven is a real miracle, which is eagerly awaited in all the United Arab Emirates.

In January, Dubai has the lowest air and water temperatures, but only the locals notice the coolness. Tourists who came to the sunny resort from the frosty Russian winter perceive +23°C as a very warm summer. Excellent conditions for a good tan! nine0003

Weather in Dubai in January (water and air temperature at night and day):

    +23.5°C
    night air t +18°C
    sea water +20…+22°С
    Humidity 65%
    Number of rainy days 1
    Rainfall 7-11 mm
    Number of sunny days 27
    Daylength 10. 6-11 o’clock

A trip to the UAE in January is enjoyed by everyone who is tired of a long and snowy winter and wants to escape from the cold for one or two weeks. According to reviews, the weather in Dubai in January is good for families because small children do not tolerate the summer heat. The cool dry climate is comfortable for older travelers and those who suffer from chronic diseases of the respiratory system, endocrine system, heart and blood vessels. nine0003

    How to dress

What to wear in Dubai winter? During the day, light clothing is enough – shorts, T-shirts and summer dresses. For morning runs and evening walks by the sea, grab a windbreaker, a light sweater and a tracksuit.

    What to do

What to do in Dubai in January 2023? Go on excursions, shop, sunbathe and swim! True, not everyone dares to swim – the sea is still quite cool (about + 22 ° С). If you like warmer water, stay at a hotel with a heated pool and enjoy a comfortable temperature of +27…+28°C at any time. nine0003

According to tourists, most of them come to Dubai in January not for a beach holiday. At the resort, you can celebrate the New Year on a grand scale and go shopping. In winter, the annual Shopping Festival kicks off, and the season of big discounts begins. Go shopping and choose nice gifts and souvenirs for yourself and your friends.

Lack of heat favors long trips and excursions. Ride across the desert on a quad bike and get to know the customs and culture of the indigenous people – the Bedouins. Go to Nad Al Sheba Park and watch the spectacular camel races. nine0003

The high pointed part is Garajonay National Park on the central plateau. Deep ravines radiate down from it like the grooves on the juicer.

    San Sebastian

The capital of La Gomera is located on the east side of the island. San Sebastian is home to 12,000 people, half the population of La Gomera.

The city spreads out along the banks of La Villa ravine, which opens out to San Sebastian’s port. Ferries from Los Cristianos, La Palma and El Hierro dock here.

    600-year-old city

As the first Castilian settlement on the island, San Sebastian dates back to the mid-15th century.

From the yacht-filled harbor, we strolled along a cobblestone street to the bell-topped Our Lady of the Assumption Church (Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción). Artists painted the frescoes inside in the mid-18th century.

Wooden beams stretched across the church’s ceiling. In the Chapel of San Sebastian, we viewed the statue of the saint that the conquistadors brought here from Spain.

    Casa Colón

Nearby is the yellow Casa de la Aquada. Christopher Columbus replenished the water in his three ships from its well before he crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.

Columbus was supposed to stay on La Gomera for four days. Legend claims that he had a love affair with the widowed landlady, Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio, the Countess of La Gomera, so he stayed one month. He returned to Isla Colombina, as it was later called, before his 1493 and 1498 expeditions.

Casa de Colón (Columbus House) is now a museum (free admission) that commemorates his stay in La Gomera. According to our guide Meike, it was built in the 17th-to-18th centuries, so Columbus couldn’t have stayed here. “It’s just a typical house from that period,” she said.

    Dragon tree

Inside the courtyard, Meike pointed out a dragon tree. The Dracaena cinnabar looked like a bunch of broccoli with sword-like leaves on top of a palm tree trunk.

“The sap turns red when it is exposed to oxygen,” said Meike. Called dragon’s blood, it was historically used to heal wounds.

“You can estimate the age of a dragon tree by the number of branches,” she explained. “The older the dragon tree, the more branches it has.”

    Garajonay National Park

The distance from San Sebastian to Garajonay National Park is 15 km (nine miles) to the east. Our tour bus stopped at a lookout, Mirador de Roque de Tajaqué.

We gazed out over clumps of canary-yellow sow thistle flowers into the mist-shrouded Benchijigua caldera and furrowed ravine. Our guide explained that Alto de Garajonay was 1,487 meters (4,877 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point in La Gomera.

    Ancestral forest

Occupying more than ten percent of the island, Garajonay National Park shelters more than 20 species of trees. This Canary cloud forest, also called monteverde (greenwood) and laurisilva, has survived millions of years from the Tertiary era.

“These are the only evergreen laurels that remain from the forest that once covered the Mediterranean region,” said Meike. “Elsewhere in the world, they are only found as fossils.” In 1986, UNESCO made this botanical relic a World Heritage Site.

It is usually misty here. And cold (14 degrees C in the park, when it’s 22 degrees by the sea), so hikers need jackets as they walk along the many trails in Garajonay.

Most of La Gomera’s water is squeezed out of the mist as it sweeps through the laurel forest, propelled by trade winds. “Moisture from the clouds condenses on the leaves and eventually becomes ground water,” said Meike. “It doesn’t have to rain.”

Terraces and palms in Valle Gran Rey viewed from Mirador del Palmarejo

    Mirador del Palmarejo

A good paved road twists and turns down from the park through Arure to Mirador del Palmarejo. The viewpoint overlooks the palm trees, houses and terraced sides of Valle Gran Rey.

“Farmers used to grow vegetables on the terraces and irrigate them with ground water from aquifers,” said Meike. “After it rained, torrential waterfalls replenished the reservoirs. Most of these cascading terraces have not been used since the 1960s, because they’ve collapsed from erosion.”

    Palm honey (miel de palma)
Photo © Barb & Ron Kroll

    Palm honey

Avocado, mango and thousands of palm trees grow in the ravine. “La Gomera has more than 150,000 palm trees, more than all of the Canary Islands together,” said Meike.

She recommended that we try palm honey (miel de palma), sold in shops across the island. “Even though it is called honey, it’s more like maple syrup in consistency, and the taste is different. It’s delicious on ice cream and puddings.

To make palm honey, a worker climbs up a Canary palm (Phoenix canariensis) at night, cuts a bowl-shaped hole in the top and collects the sap (guarapo) in a bucket.

“You can’t tap the tree during the day because the heat would ferment the sap,” explained Meike. “They boil the sap for hours, just like maple syrup, to make palm honey.”

    Whistling language

Looking across the steep ravine, we could understand why it was difficult for the Guanches, the original inhabitants, and shepherds, years ago, to communicate across the deep gullies. They developed a unique whistling language called Silbo Gomero.

“It is an actual language, not coded words,” said Meike. “The whistles imitate spoken words, using different pitches and spacing for vowels and consonants. Depending on the wind, the sound can travel up to four kilometers (2.5 miles).”

    El Silbo Gomero whistling language
Photo © Barb & Ron Kroll

She demonstrated using her bent middle finger between her lips to create piercing whistles. “Both men and women communicate with El Silbo,” she said.

With modern communications, the language was in danger of extinction. Some elderly people remembered it, but few middle-aged people learned it. In July 1999, the Canary Islands government added Silbo Gomero to the primary and secondary school curriculums to teach the younger generations.

Tourists can hear demonstrations of La Gomera’s whistling language. Visitors on the Variety Cruises shore excursion listen to El Silbo at Restaurante Las Rosas near Vallehermoso.

In 2009, UNESCO recognized Silbo Gomero with the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity designation.

Lauremers have a fairly modest sizes in comparison with neighboring Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Therefore, most often tourists come here for short study tours. And in this case, observation platforms allow you to see everything on La Gomera that is inaccessible if you do not go far from the road. nine0003

    General information

La Gomera Island has a very difficult terrain, so it is quite difficult and costly to conduct large-scale construction, roads and various communications. For centuries, the locals have created numerous terraces and their cascading colonial houses, literally rationally and meaningfully, using every piece of land in every valley.

Thanks to diligence and architectural ingenuity, bananas and dates, vegetables and herbs are successfully grown in valleys like Valle Gran Rey. A winding serpentine helps to bridge the distance between scattered settlements. And here the numerous observation decks of La Gomera, decorated in the most interesting and convenient places for parking, come to the aid of the visiting tourist. nine0003

Each observation deck not only opens horizons for tourists, but also has its own history of formation and more. Some are created by the caring hands of local restaurateurs or farmers, and some are designed by the authorities as a popular place for contemplation. Some “miradores” or viewpoints are favorite spots for photographers, and some are very popular among honeymooners.

    Panoramas

Viewpoints on the island of La Gomera are enough to see most of the island and want to come here for a long time. The most popular places to stop and photograph are:

    1. Mirador de Los Roques in the center of the island in the Garajonay National Park will show you the main beauty of the island from the heights of the surrounding cliffs, and the Roque de Agando ledge among the photographs taken.
    2. Mirador César Manrique (Palmarejo) overlooks the Valley of the Kings or Valle Gran Rey like a stone house, thanks to which you can see the result of the work of local farmers – numerous agro-terraces.
    3. Mirador de Abrante is a protruding observation deck with a glass floor, located at an altitude of more than 600 meters on a cliff. From here, in cloudless weather, the island of Tenerife and the Teide volcano are clearly visible. There is also a good restaurant where you can have a bite to eat or drink coffee.
    4. Mirador Curva del Queso overlooks the gorges of the west side of the island.
    5. Mirador de Santa Clara near the Catholic church of the same name offers a view of the cliffs of the northern coast of the island and the entire Arguamul valley. nine0008
    6. Mirador Lomada del Camello , which overlooks the island’s capital San Sebastian and the island’s main port.
    7. Mirador de Igualero – a gorgeous view of one of the gorges of the island, where the Homeric whistle is practiced.
    8. Mirador Sagrado Corazón de Jesús , which has a statue of Christ welcoming travelers, overlooking the capital, Tenerife and Mount Teide.
    9. Mirador Los Pasos de Agulo is one of the observation decks in the northern part of the island, from which the valley of the same name is clearly visible, a small beach and an excellent view of the ocean, etc.

Of course, there are many more viewing platforms on the island and not every one of them has its own name and even a roof that saves from the sun and sometimes from rain. But each of them helps to see the most interesting things on the island of La Gomera and fall in love with it.

The information on this site is provided as is, without any assurances as to its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. Weather data is prone to errors, outages, and other defects. We assume no responsibility for any decisions made on the basis of the content presented on this site.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

Golf in Tenerife – Island of eternal spring

    Getting to know Tenerife

    By German Ambassador, Markus Mueller

What many golf resorts on the Mediterranean promise, Tenerife actually delivers all year round: stable, good weather, sunlight and pleasant temperatures. The island is situated in the Atlantic, located at the same geographical height as Florida, the Sahara and Kuwait. There is a mountain range – with a peak of 3700 meters – which divides the island. It allows for some (welcome) clouds and sufficient rain development in the north and east of the island, while the south is generally considered the sunnier of the two.

In December, the sea temperature doesn’t go below 20° C and during the day the outside temperature is usually around 22° C, even in winter. Although there can be some moderately strong afternoon winds in the south, they always calm down in the evening. Even in December, there are 7 hours of sunshine a day.

The island offers a large variety of vegetation. From cloud and laurel forests and the striking gorges of the Anaga Mountains in the north to extensive spruce pine forests further down south on the slopes of the Pico el Teide volcano and banana plantations near the Las Galletas coastline.

Water is a precious commodity in Tenerife and yet it is available in sufficient quantities to provide sufficient irrigation not only for agriculture but also for the striking number of golf courses so that they always appear brightly coloured. Fairways and greens never appear to be dry. The weather stability and water availability distinguish the Canaries Islands significantly from the coasts of Turkey, Greece or North Africa and attract golfers all year round!

    The golf courses in Tenerife

By Florian Apfelbach (Ambassador Germany), Martin Hardenberger (Ambassador Sweden) & Leonard van Nunen (Evangelist Leading Courses).

It’s 40 minutes since the touchdown. Among what felt like hundreds of other golf bags, ours were luckily there. We took a taxi, paid just five euros and sat down at the Golf del Sur terrace enjoying a cold Estrella Galicia beer. It’s a bit windy, but a lovely 25 degrees, with the sun warming our skin for the first time in months. In short; this is why people have been coming to play golf in Tenerife for decades.

    Golf del Sur

The 9th hole at Golf del Sur (Photo: Leonard van Nunen).

The terrace is in a wind-protected spot between the two traditional buildings that makes for Golf del Sur’s clubhouse. The beer celebrates the start to what will be a week-long, dreamy trip to play golf in Tenerife and La Gomera. Three ladies testing out clubs for their husbands in what must be the biggest golf shop on the island make us smile. They too seem to be enjoying life. And so will their husbands.

After the kind and helpful staff allowed us to watch the Formula 1 Final outdoors, we rush out onto the course. It is a quite hilly one with some spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean, and with lava sand as your main hazard. It makes for nice contrasts and with the addition of palm trees, it feels very exotic. To fully appreciate the design you probably have to play it a few times more. However, it makes for a great start to our trip.

Save Golf del Sur to your bucket list.

    Tecina Golf

If you are in Tenerife and want to experience a real Island vibe we suggest taking the ferry to La Gomera. It’s only 40 minutes by boat but it will feel as if you’re in a different world. One where time stands still and you might never want to leave. We stayed at Hotel Jardin Tecina, a colonial style place with dozens of large rooms and apartments with beautiful views.

We played at Tecina Golf which is built on an old Banana plantation. To get to the first tee you have to take a 10-minute buggy ride or a 20-minute walk. You then play the entire course zig-zag down the hill descending almost 200 meters. Although the holes are parallel with the mountain the holes are not just boring or laid out next to each other. Some holes run straight down the mountain on this Donald Steel design.

The atmosphere is very laid back and there are big bunches of bananas that you can take as many from as you like. Take care with the boat times as there are not so many boats, stay at least one night on the island (two or more is better) to really experience it well. Also, in the afternoon the course is empty so it feels like playing a high-end private golf club.

    Amarilla Golf & Country Club

Amarilla Golf & Country Club is located close to the sea (Photo: Martin Hardenberger).

Amarilla Golf & Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Tenerife, the family that owns the course also own the nearby marina and some real estate. The golf course meanders through some houses so better be straight or take a club less. There are some very nice holes, especially the ones close to the water where you can hit your shot over the ocean. The course was designed by Donald Steel who convinced the owner to throw away the initial plan. Now the golf course has more priority than the real estate. Amarilla is very close to the airport (10 minutes) so it’s a great choice for the first or last day of your trip.

    Golf Costa Adeje

The terraces of Golf Costa Adeje’s 4th hole (Photo: Florian Apfelbach).

As the name says this golf club is located in Adeje, which is also a lovely city with some nice restaurants. When you get to the Clubhouse you see the entrance which proudly shows they hosted back to back European Tour Events in 2021 – and some more Ladies European Tour events before that.

You have two options to warm up, hitting some balls into a net – like in the UK – or using the elevator to go onto the driving range. It’s recommended to have some practise putts, as the greens are quite fast and not easy to play. If you like to order a lunch box, this might be the best one you ever had at a golf course. The golf course at Costa Adeje consists of 6 Par-3’s, 6 Par-4’s and 6 Par-5’s – the signature hole is #4 – playing downhill with beautiful sea views from the old terraces of the banana plantation and in the back the Island of La Gomera. If you’re on the fairway also have a look back to the tee box and the mountains.

Overall the conditions at Costa Adeje are really good and greens are tough. Keep in mind that it’s normally quite windy on the island so you need to take 1-2 clubs more, or less depending on the direction of the wind. Definitely a recommended course to play and good value for money.

    Abama Golf

Amazing ocean views at Abama Golf (Photo: Leonard van Nunen).

Due to the green fee price (around €200) our expectations are really high. It looks like an easy start to the course on the first hole, but if your tee shot is not at the right position you’re left with a blind second shot. There are big elevation changes on the Abama Course which means you have some of the best views of a golf hole and the Atlantic Ocean.

Some holes are really narrow and difficult to play – but the most important thing is to be close to the pin on the green. The greens have a lot of break and were running really fast. Have you ever seen Tiger Woods putting from the green into the bunker? Keep in mind that this could also happen to you on hole #13 for instance.

Abama Golf is a fun course to play and it has a lot of water hazards. This is the only golf course in Tenerife where it is mandatory to take a buggy – which is included in the green fee price. After the round, you can treat yourself to a meal from a 1-star Michelin chef at the clubhouse and enjoy the sunset.

    Buenavista Golf

Buenavista Golf is one of the very popular golf courses in Tenerife (Photo: Jacob Sjoman).

When our prolific German driver takes us down the steep mountain, on a very winding road and through the old banana plantation, some of us are praying for our lives. We’ve only been driving for 45 minutes, but this place feels very distant from the mass tourism in the south end of Tenerife. Between thick banana leaves, we can see huge waves crashing on the barren rocks. The course is down there, in the raw nature by the rocks and the waves.

The ideal vacation means different things to different people and compared to other stops on the island, Buenavista is something for the explorer; the one who wants to see the unseen and who is willing to go a bit out of his way to find it. Here you go past where the highway ends to a place where the sunbeds are fewer and the waters wilder. But maybe it is also in this hidden corner of the Tenerife nature is the most striking. It’s hard to find a more dramatic piece of land to lay out a golf course, and therefore it is only fitting that one of the game’s most dramatic and charismatic characters was given the task. This Severiano Ballesteros designed course opened for play in 2003.

Martin and Sasa playing their putts at the first hole of Buenavista Golf (Photo: Leonard van Nunen).

But already in 1976, a young Seve had won the Tenerife Open held at the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, and now was the time to leave a long-lasting mark on the island. Typical for Seve the course consists of six par3’s, six par4’s, and six par-5’s, and throughout the walk he has utilized the scenery to a maximum. From a designers perspective it may not be the most flawless design, but playing 18 holes at Buenavista Golf certainly makes for one of the most memorable golf experiences you can imagine – this is one of those captivating courses that made the whole group take photos like we were teenagers. And it is no coincidence that right after finishing on 18 we start talking about heading out there again. Maybe that’s the best review a golf course can get…?

After finishing our “emergency nine” one of us was so thrilled, he just had to get a logo hat of Buenavista Golf… Then it was time to pack our bags to head a few hundred meters up the hill to the luxurious Hotel Meliá Hacienda del Conde.

At check-in, we had complimentary champagne. Some of us brought these bubbles back to our rooms where they accompanied us in the bathtub. Oh, and the bathtub, it was so nice and big you could take a proper swim! In addition to big rooms with big bathtubs, walk-in closets and a view over the Atlantic Ocean, Meliá Hacienda del Conde offers great variety both for restaurants (2) and bars (2). As you may understand we all woke up well-rested and with smiles on our faces – our only regret was that we could not stay for longer.

Buenavista – Hotel Hacienda del Conde Meliá Collection

Hotel Hacienda del Conde was my personal surprise of the year. I have been to many places and I have stayed in the best and most famous hotels around the globe but this one is one of the most pleasant surprises in my recent travelling career. The whole architecture and design in colonial style is just so beautiful and cosy, it is worth the trip just to stay here and play the Buenavista golf course.

The rooms are very spacious (mine was 55 m²) and offer nice views of the bay and Buenavista golf course from its private terraces. Super comfortable bed, living area with sofa and work desk, walk-in wardrobe closet and large bathroom with shower and bathtub are not to be overlooked. Paintings from local artists add to the final touch of the room. Besides the 18-hole Buenavista golf course designed by Severiano Ballesteros, this place is also ideal for bikers as the hotel offers a fully equipped bike center with parking area, bike wash area, workshop and professional repair support.

After all the activities you can take a dip in a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean or indulge yourself in the YHI Spa. The Ikko bar is one of the most impressive hotel bars I have ever seen, a place where a combination of colonial and modern design meet to blend into a super comfortable atmosphere. Patio Terrace in front of the Ikko bar and Salazar restaurant (upscale a-la-carte dining experience with a fusion of local dishes with Asian influence) with a large outdoor fireplace and beautiful views. If you like wine and tapas La Tasca Wine Bar is the place for you as it offers a selection of local and international wines combined with typical Spanish tapas. Breakfast and dinner are served at Buenavista Buffet where you will find a wide selection of tasty dishes. Service is excellent as was all the staff.

Las Terrazas de Abama Suites – Abama

    Spacious accommodation at Abama Terraces.

Las Terrazas de Abama Suites is located in southwest Tenerife in the Guía de Isora area and is the perfect choice for those looking for nice and spacious accommodation for their golf vacay with their families. It is also very convenient for a group of golf friends. Our three-bedroom apartment (each bedroom with its own bathroom) offered everything golfers need for a comfortable and enjoyable golf vacation. It had a very spacious living room with a large kitchen and dining area. There was also plenty of space to enjoy the sun on the two spacious terraces with nice ocean views.

The property has three different swimming pools. We were trying to minimize our golf tan lines at the main swimming pool which is located in the same building as the hotel reception. Here you will also find a fitness studio, Gourmet shop, Melvin restaurant and SunWay pool bar which serves excellent food. A place to relax and enjoy the Canarian sun and drink your favourite cocktail after a tasty meal while watching the Atlantic Ocean and La Gomera. If you indulge yourself here long enough you will be rewarded with an impressive sunset.

Why you should play golf in Tenerife

So to sum up Tenerife is an amazing golf destination, We have never played so many holes with ocean views located so close to each other.

Holiday weather in cyprus: Best Time To Visit Cyprus | Cyprus Weather

Weather in Cyprus, live, forecasts and averages

Cyprus is located in the east of the Mediterranean, just south of Turkey, north of Egypt and southeast of Greece. Its location in the Med leads it to enjoy a fairly typical sunny Mediterranean climate; however, its proximity to southwest Asia makes it one of the hottest parts of the Mediterranean, especially in midsummer.

Mediterranean climates are characterised by long and dry summers and fairly mild, rainy winters. The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring are generally quite short and experience mild conditions. Cyprus is under the influence of a shallow low-pressure trough which extends from the great continental depression that is centred over southwest Asia. As a result summer heat can at times be unbearable and the skies during these months are often completely cloudless. This also keeps winters around the coast exceptionally mild with daytime temperatures usually in the low to mid-teens; snow is only observed at higher altitudes and only very rarely in the lower regions.

Cyprus as a whole remains very sunny throughout the year. On average the number of daily hours of sunshine ranges from six in midwinter to twelve or thirteen in midsummer. The invariably clear skies that allow this also mean that rainfall is very low throughout the summer and it is highly likely that any trip you take during this season will see no interruption to the dry weather. Sea temperatures are exceptionally warm throughout summer, peaking in the high twenties, but are comparatively chilly from December until early May. However, even during the winter, the lowest average is still in the high teens, as warm as it ever gets around the UK.

Summer is the most popular season for its endless heat and sun. If you are not a fan of high temperatures then it is best to visit Cyprus in the offseason of spring when the weather is sunny and but not too hot and the island is in full bloom. Autumn is also an enjoyable time to visit, though the scorching summer results in the island drying out considerably, only returning to its green beauty after the winter rainfall.

There is some regional variation in weather across the island. There are two mountain ranges on the island: the Troodos Mountains that cover most of the southwest of the island and reach almost up to 2000m, and the smaller Kyrenia mountain range in north-central Cyprus. Between the two mountain ranges is the low-lying, mostly flat Mesaoria plain. Regional variation is largely due to differences in altitude, with cooler temperatures being seen higher up, but the mountains also cause a variation in rainfall across the island. They protect the central plain from rain, resulting in a semi-arid climate, and also the east coast, but not to a great extent.

While legally the whole of the island is the Republic of Cyprus, the northern third is claimed and occupied by Turkey, calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. While relations between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots are still tense, and the Turkish occupation is considered illegal, relations have improved in recent years. In 2008 the wall splitting the two sides of the island was demolished and Ledra Street, which it crossed, was reopened. When passing from one side to the other, you will be subject to identification checks.

    Coastal Cyprus

Summer weather in all Cyprian coastal resorts is generally considered fantastic. The temperature starts to warm up by late April and early May, and peaks in July. The average high temperature sits in the low to mid-thirties, but the peak months often see temperatures reaching the 40s. There is little climatic variation from north to south through the west tends to be very slightly cooler and wetter due to the westerly direction of the prevailing winds. Larnaca lies at one of the lowest altitude points in Cyprus, on the south coast in a sheltered bay. June and September see average daily highs of 30°C while July and August see 32°C. During the summer months, there is often no rainfall. Limassol, to the west, experiences summer highs usually a couple of degrees cooler than Larnaca.

The coast as a whole will not be as hot as low-lying inland regions as it benefits from the cooling Mediterranean waters and winds that blow across the coast, particularly in the evenings. However, if you can’t stand the heat you will need to head inland and up into the hills or mountains where cooler temperatures are guaranteed.

Winter lows all around the coast sit between averages of 14°C and 16°C. Winters tend to see average high temperatures in the mid teens but this is often shared amongst sunny days when the temperature gets up to 20°C, and blustery, wet days when it might not get much above 10°C. It is warmer around the coast than inland in winter again due to the moderating influence of the Mediterranean. This is when the majority of the rain falls. Rainfall levels peak in December and January and tend to be moderate in the lead-up and fall off, getting lower and lower towards summer. Strong winds and violent storms sometimes blow in during the winter, but they rarely last for long.

Coastal Cyprus. Aphrodites Rock in Paphos, Cyprus.

    Central Cyprus

As mentioned above, central Cyprus is a low, flat plain with mountains to its north and southwest, resulting in a semi-arid climate. The Mesaoria plain lies to the northeast in between these two mountain ranges (Mesaoria literally translates to ‘between the mountains’ in Greek). The plain is bare, dry and fairly barren. The only trees which are present have been planted as windbreaks and the only plants that grow are quickly destroyed by grazing animals. Rainfall on the plain is much lower than anywhere else on the island. Due to its low altitude and distance from the sea, temperatures can often be uncomfortably hot.  The plain is also abundant in calcium carbonate, which is locally referred to as ‘Kafkalla.’ The calcium carbonate has been compacted into a hardpan, which can be problematic as it impedes the drainage of water and restricts the growth of plants.

Cyprus’ capital, Nicosia (known locally as Lefkosia or Lefkosha), is located almost directly in the centre of the island. The city experiences scorching summers, also a result of its distance from the coast.

Summer sees Nicosia with average maximums of 36°C in July and August and average minimums of 18°C to 21°C from June to September. In the past, each month from May to October has seen maximum temperatures in excess of 40°C, with June, July and August each seeing highs of a blistering 44°C. December to March sees average lows of 5°C to 7°C and average highs of 15°C to 19°C. The autumn and spring seasons see average temperatures in the mid-20s. January is the area’s wettest month, with Nicosia averaging 14 wet days throughout the month. Rain begins to die off in about April and doesn’t restart again until October, with the height of summer often seeing no precipitation whatsoever. The aridity of this region means that droughts are the norm and people have to conserve water in underground wells.

View of Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus.

    The Mountains of Cyprus

The mountains of Cyprus see cooler, wetter weather than the rest of the island and as such is thickly forested with pine and cedar trees. Rainfall is still low in the summer but it is not as uniformly dry as on the coast or in the central plain. In the winter the mountains see plentiful snowfall. The Kyrenia range sees around 500mm of precipitation annually while the Troodos Massif sees around 1100mm due to its much greater height.

The Troodos Mountains’ highest mountain is Mount Olympus, not to be confused with the Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece between Thessaly and Macedonia. The heavy snowfall means there is actually a ski resort on Mount Olympus, with a ski season lasting between January and April. One of the great draws of Cyprus in the winter is that you can enjoy a stroll on a warm beach on one day, and go skiing the next. Wherever you are on the island, the ski resort is within driving distance.

Out of ski season, the mountains still draw people looking for an active holiday, as walking in the hills or hiking to the top is a fun and manageable activity for most people. Aside from taking in the beautiful green scenery, if you’re there early in the year, the Troodos Mountains has nine Byzantine churches and one monastery. These were built away from the coast of Cyprus which was regularly under attack. The Kyrenia range is also covered in ancient castles and watchtowers which were built due to the vantage point afforded by the Kyrenia’s location near the coast.

How is the weather in Cyprus in winter?

In December, rains are coming to the island. There are much fewer sunny days than in summer, most of the time the sky is covered with clouds, precipitation is possible. It is the rains that can spoil the impression of a holiday in Cyprus in winter. There are also gusty winds. They are especially strong at this time on the coast. Tourists who still want to breathe the sea air in December, walking along the seashore, should stock up on waterproof windbreakers.

The weather in Cyprus in January is not much different. It is also cloudy, windy, and the possibility of rain is high. Well, in February in Cyprus, the sun begins to peek out from behind the clouds much more often. Precipitation is less than in the first months of winter. We can say that at this time spring is already coming.

The temperature in Cyprus in winter, although very different from summer, will still please the inhabitants of the northern countries. These values are typical for daytime air temperature:

    • December +16…17°C,
    • January +14…15°C,
    • February +15…16°C.

And this air temperature happens at night:

    • December +11…12°C,
    • January +9…10°C,
    • February +10…11°C.

As you can see, these values are quite suitable for walking around the city if you dress warmly. You can also safely go on various excursions, there is no suffocating summer heat, and it will not interfere with sightseeing. True, the mood can spoil the rain. But if there is no precipitation, comfortable walks are provided. nine0015

Swimming in the sea will not work unless you have specially tempered yourself at home for this. The water temperature does not exceed +17°C, which is not suitable for sea bathing. Therefore, to feel like in a real resort, it is better to rent a hotel room with indoor pools.

Benefits of a winter holiday in Cyprus

Even if the weather in Cyprus is unlucky in winter, there are some advantages to having a holiday at this time of the year. The biggest plus is the low prices. In winter, the flow of tourists to the island decreases, and a hotel room can be rented very inexpensively. At the same time, hotels and cafes do not close for the winter, as is often the case on the Russian coast. Tourist life never stops in Cyprus! You will always be welcome here, and in the tavern you will get a large portion of stifado and a glass of delicious Cypriot wine. nine0003

Also positively (for tourists) the winter period affects shopping. At this time, many stores arrange sales. Discounts are available for Christmas, as well as from February. February discounts are the most significant. Price cuts for designer clothes and shoes are up to 70 percent.

Another advantage of winter holidays in Cyprus is the opportunity to visit more excursions. Since in the summer you really want to sunbathe and swim, there is little time for sightseeing. Yes, and in the heat it is more pleasant to relax under an umbrella on the beach or at least on the shady veranda of a cafe. And in winter, you can spend all the days on informative and interesting excursions. Tourist offices are open all year round. You can go to the sights with a professional guide, or you can rent a car and drive along tourist routes on your own. nine0003

You can combine your beach holiday with skiing or snowboarding. In winter, the Troodos mountains are full of snow.

Do not miss the opportunity to look at the resort towns dressed up for Christmas. In mid-December (and in some places even earlier) they begin to prepare for the holiday. Illumination, decorated Christmas trees, Christmas installations – all this creates a festive atmosphere. Although against the backdrop of green lawns and in the complete absence of snow, it looks extremely unusual for Russians. Christmas is the main holiday here, but Cypriots also celebrate the New Year, and festive dinners are held in local taverns. nine0003
