Visa to canary islands: Administrative Requirements | Hello Canary Islands
National visas
Third-country nationals require a national visa when they are going to stay in Spain for more than 90 days (in any 180-day period) for the purposes of work, study or establishing their residence. They also need a national visa when moving to Spain to work for a period of under 90 days.
Citizens of the European Union or of the States of the European Economic Area or Switzerland do not need a visa to establish their residence in Spain or for long-term studies or to work. However, once in Spain, they must be entered on the Register for Citizens of the Union. Family members accompanying them, and who benefit from the right to free movement, must apply for a residence permit in Spain. If they need a stay visa because of their nationality, they must obtain a visa for family members of a citizen of the Union (see section “Visas for family members of a citizen of the Union”).
The national visa allows the holder to travel to Spain and to transit through and move around the territory of any Schengen State for a maximum of 90 days. However, it does not automatically entitle them to enter the Schengen area. The border authorities can refuse entry if not all entry requirements are met (See section “Conditions for entry into Spain”).

About the country
The group of islands called the Canaries has many attractions in terms of physical geography: geological origin, climate, flora. Located in an arc from the southwest to the northeast, stretching for more than 500 km, in clear weather, the archipelago is visible from the African mainland with the naked eye. Fuerteventura, the closest island to the mainland, is separated from Cape Yuba by a strait about 115 km wide. If you approach the Canary Islands from the ocean, you can see from afar, as a rule, the peak of Teide (3718 m) shrouded in clouds.
The one who gets to the archipelago is amazed by the natural diversity of the islands, and often different areas of the same island: deserted Lanzarote and green Palma, palm oases among the dry sands of the coast and tropical forests on the slopes of the mountains of Gran Canaria. The southern side of this island is semi-desert, and on the northern side there are orange groves and thickets of date palms, vineyards and sugarcane plantations. The south and north of Tenerife also differ. A traveler who has gone to the peak of Teide from La Laguna, not far from Santa Cruz, will cross at least five belts of vegetation one after another.
According to the natural and climatic characteristics, as well as the peculiarities of the geological structure of the island can be divided into three groups. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura belong to the east, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Gomera to the central, and Palma and Hierro to the west. All islands are of volcanic origin. The rise of island blocks, accompanied by an outbreak of volcanism, occurred in the middle of the Miocene. In the Pliocene, these processes were repeated. From this it follows that the islands were formed in an era before the emergence of higher forms of life. The uplift continues to this day. The study of the distant geological past of the Canaries testifies to their unity with the African continent.

Colorful Tenerife belongs to the archipelago of the Canary Islands and is the largest of them. Arriving there, you can see the Teide volcano – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not only the highest exact Spain, but also surpasses all the peaks of the Atlantic Ocean in this parameter. The British and Germans prefer to relax in Tenerife, but tourists from Russia are also willing to visit the island. To enter its territory, citizens of the Russian Federation must apply for a visa.
Do Russians need a visa in Tenerife in 2020?
The Canary Islands is a part of Spain where EU regulations apply. A visa to the Canary Islands for Russians is required. Citizens of the Russian Federation can apply for a Schengen or national Spanish visa. To do this, you need to contact the embassy.
A permit is required for those people who go to Spain for the following purposes:
- carrying out tourism activities;
- employment in a Spanish organization;
- visit to relatives or friends.
The European Union dictates its requirements for obtaining a permit. Russian tourists with a visa can freely visit the island, there are no restrictions.
You can also get to the Canary Islands from another country, but on one condition: the tourist must stay in the state that issued him the permit.
Please note that any country that has become part of the Schengen Agreement has the right to establish its own requirements regarding the application procedure.
Spanish visa. Tenerife is an island that is part of the archipelago of the Canary Islands, which belongs to Spain. To enter Tenerife, it is not necessary to have a valid visa to Spain, a standard Schengen visa is sufficient. Citizens of the Russian Federation can apply for a Schengen or national Spanish visa.
Do I need a visa to the Canary Islands: registration through the embassy
After the full package of papers is collected, you need to go to the Spanish embassy. If it is not possible to personally visit the institution, you can send a third person there with a notarized power of attorney.
The consul has the right to request additional documents. At first glance, it seems that the procedure for issuing a permit will take a long time, but when submitting a full package of papers, the application consideration period is only 4 days.
If you need to issue a permit urgently, you will have to pay additional money for the consular fee. Such a visa will be done in a couple of days. If necessary, you can issue a permit in 1 day, but in this case, all fees must be paid in double size, and also take into account the cost of courier services. Urgent visa is only single entry.
A short-term Schengen permit, which will be valid for 90 days, must be issued at the visa center, and a long-term permit at the consulate.
Puerto de Santiago, Atlantic coast, Tenerife. This is a coastal resort town located in the western part of the island of Tenerife. There is an excellent black sand La Arena beach and a beautiful view of the cliffs of Los Gigantes. The resort has the necessary infrastructure for tourists.
What types of visas exist
You always need a visa to travel to the Canary Islands, regardless of the purpose and duration of your trip. Permits are classified by duration and purpose of stay.
Long-term
With an immigration permit, you can stay in the country for an extended period of time. Category D visa entitles you to stay in Tenerife for more than 3 months. You can carry out any legal activity with it, for example, work in a Spanish organization, study at an educational institution, and so on. The permit may be valid for several years or only 1 year.
Short-term
Non-immigrant visa for temporary stay in the country is issued for a fixed period. Short-term can be divided into the following categories:
- Type A permit allows you to make a transfer in Spain, but it is forbidden to leave the airport. Recently, this category was canceled for Russian citizens.
- Type B permit allows you to leave the airport and stay in Spain for 5 days.
- Permit type C. With this document, you can stay in the Canary Islands for no more than 90 days for every 180 days.
Required documentation for a visa
Before submitting documents, you need to prepare them and collect a complete package, because if even one paper is missing, a visa will be denied. To obtain a permit, you need:
- Foreign passport of the old or new sample, which will not expire for another six months after returning to your homeland.
- Photocopy of each sheet of the passport.
- Completed visa application form. The language to fill in is English or Spanish. If there are problems with knowledge of languages, you can contact the consul or travel agency for help. There is a separate charge for this service.
- If you have old passports, it is recommended to attach them to the documents. A citizen who has traveled earlier inspires more confidence among the embassy staff.
- A photocopy of the passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation, pages 2-3, 4-5 and 14-15.
- Health insurance, in the amount of at least 30,000 euros.
- Booking from a hotel, a paper confirming the rental of an apartment or a tourist voucher, which indicates the place of residence.

A separate form is filled out for each tourist. The application form can be found on the official websites of visa centers. The form to fill out is located there.
The form must be completed in English or Spanish. There should not be any dashes in it: if there is nothing to write in the column, leave it empty. The information indicated in the form and in the foreign passport should not differ. When filling out, you must follow the rules of spelling and punctuation. La Orotava, Canary Islands. La Orotava is a city on the island of Tenerife, located at an altitude of 335 meters above sea level. In the historic center of the city, houses of the 17th-18th centuries of traditional Canarian architecture have been preserved – with elegant balconies made of expensive pine.
Visa processing time
In Moscow, a permit is issued in 4 days, in St. Petersburg – in 6 days. When applying for a visa at regional embassies, you need to take into account that documents are sent and certified in the capital, so you have to wait at least 10 days.
How long the permit will be valid
A short-term Schengen permit is issued for several years or for the duration of the trip. With such a visa, you can visit the country one, two or more times. With a visa in Spain, you can stay no more than 3 months within a 6-month period.
With a long-term permit, an immigrant can reside in the country for a long time, from 1 to 5 years.
Teide Volcano, Tenerife. The dormant Teide volcano is the highest point in Spain and the entire Atlantic Ocean. Solidified lava flows, compressed volcanic ash and bizarre rock formations have shaped the Martian landscape.
Issuance of a child’s entry permit
If the minor is included in the parent’s passport, you must provide his photograph, application form and birth certificate. During the school year, a certificate from the educational institution will be required. Adults must provide photocopies of their passports.
If a child travels outside the Russian Federation with one parent or without parents or guardians at all, parents must notarize permission to leave. In this case, the authorized person must meet the minor at the airport.
If the child has not reached the age of 14, a birth certificate must be attached, if it has, then a passport of the Russian Federation.
For what reason can they refuse
It is almost impossible to get a negative answer from the Spanish authorities. Most often, they are recalled for two reasons: the applicant provided false information about himself, or the embassy staff doubted the well-being of the citizen.
The Basilica of Candelaria is a Catholic church located in the city of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife. No less popular are the Dominican monastery of the Presentation of the Lord and the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art located next to the church, which together with the Basilica are a single complex.
Features of staying in the country
Tenerife is able to satisfy the needs of any tourist. Here you can engage in active recreation, become a member of various carnivals, arrange a gastronomic tour.
