Swimming with dolphins in Alcudia
Swimming with dolphins in Mallorca might be on the top of any visitor’s list when travelling to this beautiful island. On the north of Mallorca’s spectacular coast, we find the extensive white sandy bay of Alcudia. What makes this bay one of the best attractions for both tourist and residents are its clear shallow waters. Not only can you find in the resort of Alcudia the island’s longest beach but also a great number of small caves and coves with stunning turquoise waters.
The North of Mallorca area of the Mediterranean Sea is perfect to see dolphins swimming. The temperature in Alcudia bay is ideal for them and it is home to at least 21 marine mammals including several species of dolphins. Nevertheless, in these waters a spectacular variety of sea life can also be found apart from dolphins
Where can I swim with dolphins in Alcudia?
Swimming with dolphins is a dream had by lots. Sharing waters with these precious mammals has been proven to be an activity that gives great satisfaction. It has even been said that swimming alongside with dolphins can even beat depression.
While in Mallorca many ask the questions about whether it is possible to swim with dolphins in Mallorca or what are the best places to swim with dolphins. Before we answer the question stated, bear in mind that it is said that the best months to find dolphins in Mallorca’s north coast is between the months of May and October, which coincides with the touristic high season, because the water temperature is at its most ideal temperature for these mammals. Another interesting fact which may get your hopes up regarding seeing or even swimming with dolphins in Mallorca waters is that these creatures are known to be very curious, therefore, if they were to be near you, they would for sure approach you automatically.
Even though our waters are a great habitat for dolphins during the months of Summer, when asked about the possibility of actually swimming with dolphins in Mallorca, due to the difficulty that finding them could have for those who are not experts, the answer tends to be no. But don’t get your hopes down, you can still have the pleasure to get up close to dolphins while on holiday in Alcudia. There are two possibilities you can choose from to be stunned by the beauty of these creatures out in the wild of the Mediterranean Sea.
Dolphin watching by boat
By choosing this option you will board a small boat which departs from the Port of Alcudia itself. To make the experience even more magical the boat departs shortly before sunrise so that you can live two experiences that you will never forget combined: seeing dolphins and watching the sunrise from out at sea with impressive views from the Tramuntana mountain range. Even though this trip has an early start you don’t have to worry about breakfast as it is served on boat.

Dolphin watching by catamaran
If you would rather enjoy the experience from a catamaran this is the option that best suit you. In this case, it sails from the bay of Puerto Pollensa from where it will take you up close to the area where dolphins play around.
The scenario is the same spectacular combination of mountains, cliffs and crystal clear waters as the one mentioned before. Also, as it sails out into sea in time to catch sunrise while surrounded by dolphins, you will also be served breakfast on board.

Dolphins swimming at Marineland
The Marineland theme park is located in the south of Mallorca, in Costa den Blanes, near Palma. They offer different shows with dolphins and sea lions. One of the activities offered is the “Dolphin Experience”. It is an activity that takes place in the water on a platform of no more than 1.30 cm. deep.
The activity begins with an explanation about the dolphins: what they are like, what they eat, how they behave. .. During the activity you can touch, kiss and even hug the dolphins. You will also see their movements underwater with the help of diving goggles as well as discover the different sounds they transmit during submersion. After this experience they give you a certificate of participation, a Marineland Mallorca towel and a specific photo of the non-exchangeable interaction. Please note that swimming with the dolphins is not allowed.
The activity with the dolphins is reserved upon arrival at Marineland, and it is necessary to have the entrance ticket.

How to swim with dolphins in Alcudia
by Tracey Chandler / in Hobbies
Mallorca is one of the most popular Spanish islands, located in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and is the largest of the Balearics. It attracts a steady number of UK holidaymakers to its shores every year and it’s the perfect summer destination for the whole family. The opportunity to swim with dolphins in Alcudia, a popular tourist destination in the northeastern region of Mallorca, is one of the best things about a summer trip to the island.

The opportunity to swim with dolphins in Alcudia, a popular tourist destination in the northeastern region of Mallorca, is one of the best things about a summer trip to the island.
Avoid traveling to Alcudia in the winter months. Dolphins come to the Mediterranean shores of Alcudia in the summer because they love the warm waters that they find there. The best time to visit to see and swim with dolphins is from June to to October.
Hire a sailboat from the Alcudia port, if you know how to sail, or charter a sailboat to take you out into the water is you don’t. You are more likely to see dolphins when you are further away from the shore and swimming with the dolphins in deep water is a much more magical experience. Some sailboat owners won’t allow you to jump off of the boat and swim with the dolphins should you encounter them due to health and safety concerns, discuss this with the owners before leaving the shore and paying for your excursion.
Explore the six miles of coastline that Alcudia has to offer. The further away from the tourist beach areas you are, the more chance you have of encountering dolphins. Make sure you take snorkelling equipment with you and spend the day snorkelling close to the shore, as peacefully as you can. You might get lucky. There might be some dolphins who just happen to be close to the areas you visit.
Try out all kinds of watersports activities on offer in Alcudia to increase your chances of coming face to face with a dolphin. There are lots of agencies which specialise in windsurfing, kitesurfing, jetskiing and sailing activities. Standup, sailsurf and banana boat activities are fast becoming popular in the region too. These watersports will take you further out away from the shore and provide plenty of opportunities to find and swim with dolphins in the area.

Take the children to the Marineland water park in Costa d’en Blanes as a last resort if you have nearly come to the end of your holiday and you haven’t been lucky enough to even see a dolphin, let alone swim with one. The Marineland water park is open until the end of October and organises daily marine life presentations, which includes shows performed by dolphins. There’s normally one very lucky child who is picked randomly from the crowd to get into the water and ride around with the dolphins. It’s a long shot in terms of being able to swim with dolphins, but it’s a great way of enjoying all the beautiful things they can do in the water from a distance.
Spend as much time in the Mediterranean Sea as possible. The more activities you can organise which involve being out on the water, the more chance you will have of seeing and being able to swim with dolphins.
Avoid getting your hopes up before your travel. Dolphins love the warm shores which surround the island of Mallorca and they are big annual fans of Alcudia in particular, but this doesn’t guarantee you will be lucky enough to see or swim with them. Dolphins, like any animal, will choose to be seen and choose to approach when they want to.

To Mallorca with children – Website about Mallorca: Attractions, Tourism
To the advantages of Mallorca, it is worth adding a wide and colorful range of activities for children of all ages: beach, swimming pool, water park, dolphinarium, oceanarium, safari, horse riding, cycling, karting, minigolf, vintage train ride, canoeing, surfing courses… the choice is the hardest part.
Beach and children in Mallorca
During the warmer months, Mallorca’s beaches are the main attraction for children and adults. What could be better than playing by the shore on a white sandy beach, swimming for hours in blue waters, running free under the sun. All this time the parents enjoy the tranquil environment in direct contact with the nature of the Mediterranean. What if the kids are older and would rather be interested in diving between rocks and chasing crabs? And for them there is a large selection of rocky bays. Mallorca in the choice of beach, ideal. And rocky bays, and sandy beaches. nine0003
Either way, peace of mind comes from knowing that the tourist infrastructure you will encounter will make your days away from home much easier. First, the island’s hotels are highly experienced, well aware of the needs of families, and in many cases offer entertainment programs for children, ranging from outdoor games, drawing workshops, dancing and a kindergarten.
Restaurants offer a variety of food and cater to customers of all ages. Therefore, it is not difficult to find a good place where adults can try local gastronomy – “arròs brut” (Arro brut-ris), or snails with garlic mayonnaise and children can choose
one of the most common dishes of international cuisine.
What are we doing today, mother?
Marineland Mallorca
One of the advantages of Mallorca is that visitors can choose between the comfort of self-guided trips and trips organized by agencies and hotels. It is a convenient island where distances are short and there is a good road network that allows you and your family to rent a car and drive around the island at your own pace. nine0003
Children will most likely want to visit any of the water parks located around the island. All of them have unique features. Some offer swimming with seals or dolphins. A day at the dolphinarium or a visit to the aquarium where you can stand a few meters from the sharks is always fun. The additional range of these facilities more and more diversify the visit, and families can devote a whole day to these visits, spending most of the time outdoors.
If parents want their children to burn a lot of energy, cycling is a good option, thanks to new routes for cyclists. You just have to find the most suitable route for your children. Along the coast, from Arenal to Palma, there is a special path for cyclists, where it is also possible to rent a bike. nine0003
Calm sea suitable for children
Your options don’t end there. The Mediterranean is also suitable for those traveling with children. You can take several boat tours from the port of Palma, Alcudia, Andratx, Sóller… In some cases, paella and drinks are included in the price, which saves you from having to organize meals throughout the day.

Another option is to fly over the sea with a parachute.
Kayaking and easy hiking in the Tramuntana Mountains are other options for active holidaymakers with children aged six and over.
Although the words history and tradition may seem too boring for children, they, like their parents, will fall in love with such traditional and entertaining Majorquinian holidays: the day of “correfocs” (start a fire), “dimonis” (people dressed like devils) drum dances and fireworks.

On the whole, people go to Egypt if they want to see some pyramides. Or Mexico. Or Peru.
Well, they could try Spain as well. The Canary Isles, actually.
Sitting around 100 kms off Morocco on the North West coast of Africa, eleven volcanic Islands make up the archipelago of the Canary Isles.
Tenerife, the largest of the Canaries, proudly sports the Black Pyramids, one of the Canary Islands’ many mysteries, resembling similar structures in both Mexico and Peru, with six angular stone steps.
Offering some insight into the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the area, the Parque Etnografico ‘Pirámides de Güímar’ is situated in the Tenerifan town of Güímar, with a museum, café and souvenir shop nearby. The Black Pyramids are an attraction for anyone on holiday on the island of Tenerife.
Archaeologists still know surprisingly little about the pyramids that form the complex, although excavations indicate that there was a community based around them. The complex comprises of six-steps pyramids which are aligned to the East, suggesting that they were used to worship the sun. During the sun solstice, they are said to line up with the sunset in a distinctive spot on the mountainous horizon.
The Canaries’ unique geographical location has made the Islands an important point in maritime routes for hundreds of years; Columbus, for example, used La Gomera as his last port of call before he made the long trip across the Atlantic Ocean to America.
For years there has been dispute as to whether Leif Eriksson, the Norse, or Christopher Columbus actually discovered America first, but there seems to be a distinct possibility that both of them were a few centuries too late and that the people of Meso-America and the Islanders of Tenerife established expeditions or even trade routes between their respective civilizations, actually much earlier.
Norwegian explorer, anthropologist and author, the late Thor Heyerdahl spent the last few years of his life in Güímar, supervising the archaeological mission there to survey and preserve the pyramids and the complex they were part of. Thor Heyerdahl was convinced that South Americans had crossed the Pacific to reach Polynesia and in 1947, he undertook a successful ocean crossing in a primitive raft, the Kon Tiki, to prove his theory. He then expanded his theory further, claiming that if Peruvian explorers first travelled across the Pacific and settled in Polynesia, it was possible that Tenerife was settled in a similar way. In that case the Peruvian pioneers would have built their temples and pyramids along similar lines to the ones they had left back home. If Dr. Heyerdahl’s theories are correct, then it is clear that those Peruvian seafarers might have been responsible for the construction of the pyramid complex discovered at Güímar.
Only few scholars endorse the idea, however, that American Indigenous Indians navigated the oceans in the way Thor Heyerdahl suggested, and discount this hypothesis largely on linguistic, genetic and cultural grounds, all of which point to the settlers having come from the east, not the west. However, none of the scholars have come up with a convincing explanation as to how the Canary Islands ended up with their own step pyramids.
At the same time, no one can deny that there are undoubtedly parallels between the Meso-American cultures and the Canary Island cultures. Artefacts have been found on the islands that are almost identical to ones found in South America.
If you fancy a bit of theorizing yourself, even a bit of Kon Tiki rafting, you better make your way to the Canaries one of these days and see for yourself.

Bofill pyramid, between the borders of Spain and France
A car drives along an endless road. An infinite gray line that some travelers have been driving for hours and hours, so many hours that they have even stopped being in Spain to be in France. They drive along the A9 highway, also known as the Languedocienne or the Catalane. And suddenly, on one of the sides of it, a figure appears on top of a hill. It looks like a castle, but it is not. It is the Bofill Pyramid, a monument that the Barcelona native erected in 1976 as a tribute to his community and as a touch of color among the monotony of the border landscape. A Weekend Getaway for all those who are traveling to or returning from the neighboring country.
A bit of history of the Spanish-French border
The border between Spain and France was formally defined in the middle of the 17th century with the signing of the Treaty of the Pyrenees on the Pheasant Island, a document that put an end to a war between the two countries. Later there were some changes, although it is with the signing of the Treaties of Bayonne, issued between 1856 and 1868, when the definitive limits were established, which are still in force today (except for minor changes).
Thus, the Spanish-French border extends over 650 kilometers between the southwest of France and the northeast of Spain. From west to west, the delimitation begins in the municipalities of Hendaye and Fuenterrabia, the first French and the second Spanish. The border then extends along the Pyrenees until it reaches Andorra, where it is interrupted for dozens of kilometers. This imaginary line ends at the Mediterranean Sea, in the French and Spanish municipalities of Cerbère and Portbou, respectively.
The keys to the Bofill Pyramid

Just across the border between the two countries, a high hill rises on the east side, dotted with long staircases that culminate in a reddish-colored building, baptized the Bofill pyramid. In the 1970s, the Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA) was commissioned by the Société des Autopistes du Sud-Est de France for a project that was neither defined nor explicit. But one thing was clear: they wanted to break with the monotony of the highway. ‘The idea was to design a project that would contribute to the humanization of the Southeast Highways, as a response to the monotony of endless kilometers of tar and concrete,’ says RBTA.
Initially, the project was going to be a promenade of more than one kilometer, but this turned out to be too ambitious and plan B was chosen: the pyramid. In addition to the intention of giving more heterogeneity to the landscape, the architect wanted to pay homage to Catalunya. To see this part of the monument you have to climb to the top. There, the four bars of its coat of arms and flag are represented. In addition, the studio adds that ‘it symbolizes and materializes international cooperation and fraternity’.

Another of the curiosities of the Bofill pyramid is that the hill on which it sits is built with the rubble of the earth that had to be removed for the construction of the road. The size of the pyramid is 80 meters high, while its base reaches 100 meters.
Corners near the Bofill monument
Being on the Spanish-French border, from the Bofill Pyramid it is possible to visit sites in both France and Spain. The Alberca mountain range, which is administratively part of both Girona and the Eastern Pyrenees of France, is next to the monument, although it is true that it depends on which part of it you intend to go to. In any case, the routes offered are very varied. In addition, monasteries, megalithic monuments, castles and churches can be seen in the area.
Les Cluses, a town nestled in this mountain range, is located just seven minutes drive from the pyramid and has several monuments of interest, such as the remains of the Roman fort, a medieval bridge or the parish church. The remains of the Via Domitia, the first Roman road built in Gaul, stand out.
Location of Colliure, in the southeast of France. | Shutterstock
Slightly further away, 30 kilometers from Bofill’s monument, is the coastal commune of Colliure. Its location by the Mediterranean, its artistic tradition or its beautiful streets and facades are reason to pay it a visit. By the way, the poet Antonio Machado died here during his exile in the Spanish Civil War.
A must and curious stop on the Spanish-French border
Bofill’s Pyramid is an original stroke that raises the heads of drivers and their companions for at least a second and makes them wonder what they are seeing. Watching from above, this monument is designed by one of the great contemporary architects of Spain and is a break in the road, a place to get strength to continue with the rest of the trip.
Castelles, or pyramids of people | About Spain from the guide
Not a single holiday in Catalonia is complete without competition – castelles. Castelles, or human pyramids, is the most unusual Catalan tradition.
This unique tradition is unique to this region. It enjoys great love among local residents and always causes a storm of delight among tourists.

Castelles, or pyramids of people: the history of the origin
Castelles: construction features
Castelles, or pyramids of people: the history of origin
This tradition originated in the south of Catalonia, in the city of Tarragona. Now one of the largest centers where the competition is held is the city of Villa Franca del Penedes.
There is a legend that this pyramid was built for the first time to help a Catalan get out of captivity. He escaped, brought help and saved everyone else. For the Catalans, the construction of castelles is a symbol of unity, mutual assistance and support. nine0003
Researchers say that the tradition of building such structures came from Valencia . This region was once part of the Catalan-Aragonese kingdom. The Valencians had a special tradition: a festival of street dances.
The dance ended with the construction of a gymnastic pyramid. Gradually, this tradition began to take root in Catalonia. Dancing and the construction of pyramids were especially popular during the wine harvest festival. nine0003
With the passage of time, the dance disappeared and pyramid building became very popular. Gradually, the technique and acrobatic stunts begin to become more complicated. Over time, the construction of living pyramids has become a national sport.
Now in every village and in every district, if we are talking about a large city, there is a castells team. The number of people in the team can vary from 30 to 150 and this is not the limit.
Training in progress regularly 3-4 times a week . In the period from March to April, competitions of various levels are held. Teams compete in the speed of construction and the complexity of the erected figures.
Castelles: features of construction
In order to build a living pyramid, you need a well-coordinated team that works as a single organism. The actions of each participant must be worked out to automatism.
All participants are dressed in a special uniform: white pants, wide black belt. It is needed to protect the muscles of the back and serve as a kind of “step” for those who will climb up. The color of the shirt can distinguish one team from another. Children who climb to the very top of the pyramid are given a special protective helmet. nine0003
Each team has a captain who is in full control of the whole process. The strongest and most powerful athlete stands in the center of the future pyramid. Around him, the base of the pyramid begins to form. It, in turn, can be divided into several groups. It all depends on what kind of pyramid they want to build.
After that, the trunk begins to form. As the pyramid rises to the upper tiers, the lightest members of the team become. These are women, boys and girls, children. The pyramid is considered completed when the smallest athlete rises to the top. Usually, this is a child of 6-7 years old. He must raise his hand. This means that construction is over. But that’s not all. Not only the speed, the complexity of the figures in building a pyramid is evaluated, but also the ability to “disassemble” it. Both building and “dismantling” require the ability to maintain balance and coordinate actions. After all, if the living pyramid collapses, strict judges simply will not count it. nine0003
The construction of the castelles is accompanied by a brass band. It sets the rhythm and helps maintain balance.

Els Castells – Catalan living pyramids
Imagine this picture: walking along the city streets, you hear how somewhere nearby sounds patriotic-excited-alarming music calling for feats,
accompanied by exclamations and other noise, obviously not a small crowd.
nine0003
You move towards the sound and find yourself in a large area where, in the center of the human sea, a team of athletes in the same uniform with amazing dexterity and dexterity
erects a living pyramid: a spectacle that is impossible to watch without a sinking heart – after all, the number of tiers in it can reach 8, 9 and even 10, and the height, respectively, is 16-17 meters!
One by one, the athletes climb to the top and take their place in the structure, and a child, a boy or a girl of 18 years old, climbs to the highest level.
like seven.
nine0003
Only after this fearless kid, having taken his place at the top, raises up his little hand with four spread fingers, symbolizing the four stripes of the Catalan flag – the pyramid
is considered built and the reverse process begins, requiring no less dexterity and skill.
So, if you saw what I just described – everything is fine, friends! It just means that you are in Catalonia, that today is some kind of holiday, and the spectacle that you just
enjoyed – the performance of the “castellers” team: builders of living pyramids.
nine0003
The tradition of building “castells” – living pyramids – came to Catalonia from neighboring Valencia and is almost 300 years old. During this time, from the countryside of Tarragona, she managed to
spread throughout Catalonia and even beyond its borders – in the territory of Southern France and the Balearic Islands adjacent to us.
It is clear that for such a long time in this folk Catalan fun, a clear nomenclature has been developed, in which we will easily and painlessly learn
understand now. So:
nine0003
Colla – a team of acrobats-castellers.
It consists of residents of the same town or even village, people who know each other perfectly – members of the same family, friends, relatives, brothers and in-laws. The number of people on the team can
vary from fifty to five thousand – and this is not the limit.
Cap de colla – team leader, captain, head, who is responsible for the whole process. He also appoints
nine0003
Agulla – the most powerful person in the team, around whom begins to form
Pinya is the base of the pyramid, which in turn is divided into several groups, depending on the functions performed by team members. So, the base of the tower
built and starting to take shape
Tronc – the trunk of the pyramid, the most visible and its main part. Regardless of how many tiers the pyramid has and what its layout is (there is
because there are many options), the upper part of the trunk is unchanged and is called
nine0003
Pom de Dalt – the top of any pyramid that is in turn formed
from
Dosos – level of two castellers
Acotxador – the penultimate level of the pyramid, and this is a child,
small and light, and finally
Enxaneta – the youngest kid in the team, who, having climbed, like a fearless little monkey, to the very
up, and raises his hand to indicate that the castell has been built.
The sand dunes of Maspalomas are probably one of the most important tourist attractions and one of the most famous landmarks of Gran Canaria. The dunes form the southern tip of the island (the southernmost point is called Punta de La Bajeta or Punta de Maspalomas). They stretch over a length of 6 kilometres and a width of 2 kilometres between the beaches of Playa del Ingles and the oasis and lighthouse of Maspalomas.
Maspalomas is the only remaining big sandy area of the Canary Islands and has been under special protection since 1987: Reserva Natural Especial de las Dunas de Maspalomas. Within Europe, there’s nothing comparable in terms of area.
Maspalomas also includes the adjacent biotope reserve “La Charca”. This small lagoon near the Maspalomas lighthouse offers numerous water birds a retreat and breeding possibilities.
The dunes of Maspalomas attract thousands of visitors every year, who return to the island again and again, mesmerized by the unique desert landscape.
The origin of the Maspalomas Dunes
One theory is that the dunes were formed by erosion. This means that the strong trade winds and the sea surf ground the former rocky coastline into fine sand, which was then washed ashore by the tides. The sand was formed mainly in the sea, and as the sea level sank, the sand came to the surface and, after drying on the beach, was blown westwards (precisely onto what is now the area of the dunes). The period of formation is estimated to be about 10,000 years.
However, the origin of the dunes remains unclear, and we can only speculate. Other theories say that the dunes were formed by a tsunami that washed up a large amount of sand. Whatever the case, the Maspalomas dunes are a true natural wonder, and which theory you believe is up to you.
Composition of the sand of Maspalomas
60% of the sand of Maspalomas is made up of carbonate sands, formed by the crushing of the remains of shellfish and corals in the sea. The other 40 % is made up of sediments that come from the decomposition of rocks (sands of basic and acidic rocks, ferromagnetic rocks and volcanic glasses) from the interior of the island. This actually has nothing to do with sand from the Sahara, like many believe.
What to do in the Maspalomas dunes
To get to know this unique natural landscape, we recommend stopping by the visitor centre and the viewpoint, which can be found in the facilities of the Riu Palace Hotel (in Playa del Inglés). From here, there’s a hiking trail whose branch no. 3 runs through the different types of dunes in the nature reserve and ends at the extensive Maspalomas beach. Here you can sit in the shade of the palm grove or visit the Tony Gallardo Environmental Park.
Bird watching in the brackish lagoon “La Charca de Maspalomas”
From the sunny beach you can walk to the adjacent lagoon and biotope “La Charca” and observe the life of wild birds. This brackish lagoon has become an ideal stopover or nesting site for numerous migratory and nesting birds. On the beach avenue, you can find a few information boards that explain the many animals that now live in this nature reserve, as well as information about the different flora of Maspalomas. In the dunes themselves there are mainly dry and salt-loving plants. After heavy rainfall and at high tide, La Charca connects to the sea forming a small river.
Camel Safari through the Maspalomas Dunes
If you feel adventurous you can go on a trip through the Maspalomas Dunes on the back of a camel. Behind the Charca de Maspalomas there’s a Camel Safari with more than 30 dromedaries. Camel riding in Maspalomas is the perfect way to take photos of the animals and the desert landscape up close that you’ll remember forever.
Swimming and naturism
Maspalomas offers a relaxed atmosphere with calm waters. But be careful! It’s important to always check the flag before swimming. If the flag is green, you can swim without worrying. With a yellow flag you should be careful, i.e. only good swimmers may enter the water under supervision. If the flag is red, swimming is forbidden!
For nudists, the naturist area is located in the middle stretch of the beach, between the lighthouse of Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, near the kiosk nr. 7.
Discover the desert in the south of Gran Canaria
The dunes of Maspalomas are a real spectacle and a unique experience. Looking for accommodation near the beach? Choose the holiday rental of your dreams: a villa, a bungalow, a finca, a chalet, a flat… in Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras… The possibilities are endless. Choose your dream holiday.

0031 Close to a nudist beach 🙂
Interesting place, but beware of nudists.
Must see when in Gran Canaria! If you walk through the desert you will find the hidden secret of the island! 😉
Developments of hotels, and the increased volume of holiday patrons of this area, has some impact on the volume of wind activity that forms the dunes. But it still for now is a lovely work of nature.

and not visit the dunes. This was my favorite place on the island. Out of this world beautiful!
Puedes llegar a perderte. La zona del faro y el paseo es muy bonita. Los precios en la zona son un poco altos
Even though I expected more, this place is nice, especially in the morning with only a few people, mostly joggers. Together with the beach and ocean really worth the visit.
excellent sandy beach, lots of restaurants and shops. free toilet in McDonalds :). 2 sunbeds and an umbrella €7.5
Ideal ir al atardecer para hacer fotos de ensueño
Nice place and worth to visit, however lots of tourists leave trash behind. You can meet lots of nude people around.
Great place for a short hike, beautiful nature and a swim as a prize at the end.
Paisaje unico. Tranquilidad absoluta.
Nice small desert. The wind takes the sand from Africa which is near to Gran Canaria.Nice restaurants, pubs, beach. But in the end of the year is full whit old German tourists:)
Contemplar las dunas es un espectaculo. Eso sí, para llegar a la orilla acabas agotado.
Amazing beach , lot of shop and restaurant!
Amazing view and amazing playful sand dunes. 🙂
Lugar espectacular e impresionante!
Great views and “feeling of desert”

Schools face closing down in just DAYS as teachers go on strike – with warning of ‘disruption’ for kids
SCHOOLS face closing down within days as teachers’ strikes cause chaos in the education system.
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has warned of “unnecessary disruption” caused by walkouts.

The Education Secretary warned of ‘unnecessary disruption’ as teachers are set to launch a string of strikes within daysCredit: PA
Teachers are launching a string of strikes across the UK, affecting seven days in February and March.
Ms Keegan wrote to union bosses at the National Education Union (NEU) asking them to “encourage” members to inform their head teachers if they plan to join the strikes.
She said notice of which staff would be walking out would help to ease disruption and allow heads to “take important operational decisions to protect children’s learning.”
While she acknowledged there was no obligation for staff give such notice, she added: “I understand the importance of maintaining teachers’ right to strike, but I hope this important right can be protected whilst minimising the impact on children – especially in the context of the disruption they have faced due to Covid.
“Your co-operation would help ensure our dispute does not cause additional and unnecessary disruption.”
However, Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the NEU, said heads should prepare for action by all union members in their school.
In her response to the Education Secretary’s letter, she said: “They should plan on that basis – that the members of the union will follow the union’s request to withdraw their labour on that day.
“We don’t want individual members to be put under pressure and be intimidated.”

Description
First edition of Nolin’s rare 2 sheet map of southern Spain, published in Paris.
Two title cartouches, with titles in French and Spanish, coats of arms, etc. Includes fantastic topographical detail.
Later editions were issued until about 1760.
Jean-Baptiste Nolin Biography
Jean-Baptiste Nolin (ca. 1657-1708) was a French engraver who worked at the turn of the eighteenth century. Initially trained by Francois de Poilly, his artistic skills caught the eye of Vincenzo Coronelli when the latter was working in France. Coronelli encouraged the young Nolin to engrave his own maps, which he began to do.
Whereas Nolin was a skilled engraver, he was not an original geographer. He also had a flair for business, adopting monikers like the Geographer to the Duke of Orelans and Engerver to King XIV. He, like many of his contemporaries, borrowed liberally from existing maps. In Nolin’s case, he depended especially on the works of Coronelli and Jean-Nicholas de Tralage, the Sieur de Tillemon. This practice eventually caught Nolin in one of the largest geography scandals of the eighteenth century.
In 1700, Nolin published a large world map which was seen by Claude Delisle, father of the premier mapmaker of his age, Guillaume Delisle. Claude recognized Nolin’s map as being based in part on his son’s work. Guillaume had been working on a manuscript globe for Louis Boucherat, the chancellor of France, with exclusive information about the shape of California and the mouth of the Mississippi River. This information was printed on Nolin’s map. The court ruled in the Delisles’ favor after six years. Nolin had to stop producing that map, but he continued to make others.
Calling Nolin a plagiarist is unfair, as he was engaged in a practice that practically every geographer adopted at the time. Sources were few and copyright laws weak or nonexistent. Nolin’s maps are engraved with considerable skill and are aesthetically engaging.
Nolin’s son, also Jean-Baptiste (1686-1762), continued his father’s business.

Patras: from today the city lives in a carnival rhythm
Author
Alexia Zahariu
716
From today Patras begin to live in the rhythm of the carnival. In the center of the city, the opening ceremony of the cultural festival of the city, which marks joy, optimism, and hope for the best, took place. nine0013
This year, the protagonists are once again thousands of boys and girls, residents of Patras, members of the Hidden Treasure/Treasure team (“Κρυμμένου Θησαυρού”), who, thanks to their imagination, ingenuity and artistic spirit, every year succeed in holding a significant city cultural event.
The roots of the carnival go deep into ancient Greek traditions, in the center of which is the god Dionysus: the Dionysian holidays were associated with the end of winter and the arrival of spring, symbolizing the rebirth of nature and human souls. In Greece, carnivals begin in February, three weeks before Clean Monday. Carnival is a feature of folk culture, and it is not only a spectacle, but also an event in which all participants are equal (in ancient times, slaves were freed during carnival days, who could allegorically ridicule their masters). nine0021
The incessant rain did not prevent the carnival participants from taking to the streets of the city. The events began today at noon with the transfer of the carnival banner by the mayor of Kostas Peletiidis (πρόεδρο και μέλη του της κοινωφελούς τιχου δήμου “καρναβάλι πάτρας”) participants in the carnival. The ceremony was held in the city hall, after which, to the sound of music, “fun fights” took place – smearing everyone and everything with chocolate (σοκολατοπόλεμου). The banner of the Patrinos 2023 carnival will remain at the City Hall until the end of the events on February 26. nine0013
Today, Saturday 21 January at 21:00, the opening ceremony will take place, where the mayor of Patras, Kostas Peletidis, will announce the official opening of the carnival “Πατρινού Καρναβαλιού 2023”. This year the motto under which the carnival takes place is “Revival” (regeneration, renewal). It seems that this is exactly what the inhabitants of Greece, crushed by a series of suffocating crises, need so much.

“Bochum”
Based on the results of 15 matches played, the team “Bochum” takes 17th place in the standings of the German Championship with 13 points.
Bochum’s position at the bottom of the standings is due to a less than optimal balance of wins-draws-losses: With 4 wins, the team has 1 draw and 10 losses.
“Bochum” has a negative difference between goals scored and goals conceded, while conceding most often in the first third of the first half, which is 22% of all goals conceded, and it is in this segment that the players should tighten their concentration. At the same time, the team hits the opponent’s goal most often in the first third of the first half, which is 40% of all goals scored. However, this is not enough for a positive balance, and the coaching staff needs to add attacking intensity in other game segments. nine0013
“Hertha”
Based on the results of 15 matches played, the team “Hertha” takes 15th place in the standings of the German Championship with 14 points.
The place at the bottom of the standings, occupied by “Hertha”, is due to not the most optimal balance of wins-draws-losses: With 3 wins, the team has 5 draws and 7 losses.
Hertha have a negative difference between goals scored and conceded, while conceding most often in the first third of the first half, which is 29% of all goals conceded, and it is on this segment that players should tighten their concentration.

Time Out has vacation ideas for Dubai expats, including a Gran Canaria travel guide, with things to do on your holiday, hotels, deals and flights
by Time Out Dubai staff
W hile the idea of a package holiday in the Canary Islands might fill some holidaymakers with dread, there really is no reason to believe the hype. Yes, it is largely the domain of pleasure-seeking Europeans, but this doesn’t have to be your abiding impression, as Time Out found out, much to our joy. The made-for-tourism resort of Puerto Rico is the perfect destination for a spot of battery recharging in the sun.
Highlights
Amadores Beach Although Puerto Rico does have its own beaches, they are dwarfed by the one at Amadores. Just a brisk (or leisurely, depending on the mood) downhill walk from the upper part of Puerto Rico, this crescent-shaped stretch of sand is very popular with families, water babies and sun-seekers alike. Along with the refreshing, azure waters, there are a number of restaurants and bars lining the shore, all of which have a certain beach shack charm. As with elsewhere in the area, you will find several venues showing live sport for those who can’t miss a single kick off of their beloved football team.
Balcón Canario If you really want some authentic Spanish fare, try the Balcón Canario in Puerto Rico. This fabulously friendly family-run eatery might be stuck in a shabby shopping centre, but look past the appearance and gorge on the food, lovingly prepared by a culinary team who clearly have a huge passion for what they do. You will find a number of Spanish classics on the menu but we say plump for the paella, which is quite simply one of the tastiest dishes we have ever tried. In fact, it was so good that it even tasted great when reheated in the microwave the next day.
Puerto de Mogán Should you fancy a change of scenery, or change of pace, then jump on a bus to idyllic Puerto de Mogán. Dubbed “Little Venice” due to the canals that link the harbour to the marina, this little fishing village is as beautiful as it is refined. Its Friday market is well worth a visit, offering a range of stalls run by local artisans who sell craft jewellery and other hand-made goods. There’s also a beach that even attracts Spanish tourists, along with a good selection of restaurants along the small promenade.
Where to stay
Altamar Hotel The Altamar Hotel might be a popular destination for boisterous Brits, but if you play your cards right and book one of the sizeable studios near the top of the resort, you can find the peace and quiet you are seeking. With exceptional views over the Atlantic – and thanks to a climate conducive to soaking up the sun – you’ll soon feel all your worries drift away. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more friendly and welcoming set of staff than at this hotel that, like many in Puerto Rico, cascades down the mountainside towards the sea. Handily, there is a lift to the more lofty parts if you over-ate at the restaurant below, which has an array of themed nights with entertainment and knocks out a mean barbecue. www.altamarhotels.com
Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel This four-star offering is well worth a look, even if it is just for the fantastic setting. Perched dramatically on the cliff top, the Gloria Palace offers sensational vistas of the Atlantic, especially from its infinity pool. The building itself is a brilliant fusion of modern glass and steel work along with local stone, giving you a real sense of modernity and traditionalism. The Gloria also boasts one of Europe’s largest centres for thalassotherapy, a skin rejuvenating treatment that uses seawater. www.gloriapalaceth.com
El Greco If you really want to be in the heart of Puerto Rico, but don’t want to miss out on the sea views, then this group of apartments could be the answer. Its location makes El Greco an ideal base for exploring the town itself but also gives guests direct access to the beach at its base. There are three dining options here: the grill restaurant, the poolside snack bar and the Italian eatery El Molino del Greco. www.elgrecopuertorico.com/en/home
Getting There
Although technically in Europe, Gran Canaria is perched just off the West African coast. The quickest way of reaching it from Dubai is by taking an Emirates flight to Casablanca and then hopping on a Royal Air Maroc service to Las Palmas. From Abu Dhabi, fly with Etihad to Madrid before a connection on Iberia to Las Palmas. If travelling from Doha, take a Qatar Airways flight to Madrid followed by the same connecting service to Las Palmas with Iberia. The bus from Las Palmas to Puerto Rico takes around half an hour.
Getting Around
As with most destinations, the cheapest way to venture around Puerto Rico and the rest of the island is via public transport. Gran Canaria has a very solid and regular bus service that connects many towns and tourist spots with each other. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can always hire a scooter from one of the many rental places in Puerto Rico, as long as you are brave enough to tackle some winding coastal roads on what is essentially a hairdryer on wheels. If you try it, you won’t be alone on the cliff edge, as it’s a popular way to get about. Taxis are a little pricey compared to Middle Eastern standards, but are readily available and the drivers very helpful.
Travel Tip
Unless you go all-inclusive, the cost of package holidays can soon escalate depending on what sort of board is included. If you can spare the time, quickly rustle yourself up a daily picnic to take to the beach or on sightseeing trips. Puerto Rico has a number of Hiperdino supermarkets that are reasonably priced and well stocked. This tactic will leave you with more to splash out on an evening meal each night.
What’s Happening If you are looking for something far more authentically Gran Canarian than the stream of bars and nightclubs dotted around Puerto Rico, then take a trip to Agaete. On August 4 each year, this historic town on the north-west coast plays host to Fiesta de La Rama. The precursor to a more sedate festival the next day, this colourful celebration sees thousands of dancers making their way through two waving palm branches. It is widely believed that the fiesta has its origins in the rain dance performed by the first settlers on the island. Another August highlight of the Gran Canarian calendar is the Vará del Pescao. Held in the town of Agüimes, this is a festival of fish, rejoicing in the old method of calling out to neighbours using conch shells, announcing the catch’s arrival.

Gran Canaria Guide: Action & Tranquility for Couples & Families
Posted on 17 November 2022
Each of the Canary Islands has its own character, but arguably none are as distinct as Gran Canaria, the archipelago’s third largest island.
What is Gran Canaria famous for?
Gran Canaria is probably most famous for its spectacular sand dunes, Dunas de Maspalomas and it’s not so natural lively resort, Playa de Ingles, developed in the 1960s specifically as a tourist area.
But Gran Canaria has so much more to offer.
Gran Canaria – A naturally beautiful island
Boasting a diverse set of ecosystems, you can lounge on excellent beaches to the south, hike subtropical rainforests and mountains in the centre, and explore leafy, verdant landscapes in the north.
For both couples and families, Gran Canaria presents a wealth of attractions and things to do – far more than the gaudy beach resort brochures might suggest.
When is the best month to go to Gran Canaria?
With average winter temperatures of 20 degrees, and summer averages of 26, there’s never really a bad time to visit Gran Canaria.
However, if you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, avoid Gran Canaria in the peak summer and winter months.
It can be tricky to book excursions during these busiest of periods, and hotel rooms can fill up quickly.
How many days is enough for Gran Canaria?
Gran Canaria is large enough that you can still discover new places to explore weeks, or even months into your stay.
On the plus side, the island is also small enough that you can easily travel by bus or car without having to endure arduous journeys to get places.
Gran Canaria for couples
Whether your idea of a romantic holiday involves relaxing together on a sun-kissed beach, or climbing a rugged sub-tropical mountain, Gran Canaria offers both – and much else besides.
Night life for couples in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria has a multitude of superb restaurants – many with romantic sea-views which are ideal for candlelit dinners.
Nightclubs and casinos are in abundance if you need extra kicks.
Add in a wide range of top-notch hotels and love is sure to be in the air.
Gran Canaria for families
Gran Canaria has been welcoming families for decades, so it’s no surprise there are dozens of attractions on offer.
From dolphin-spotting boat trips to camel tours, from theme parks to zoos – it’s difficult not to enjoy yourself on this island, whether you’re five – or fifty.
Accommodation for families in Gran Canaria
With some of the best family-friendly hotels on the entire archipelago, you might spend half your time lounging by one of the amazing resort pools, sipping a cool drink as the kids splash around.
Isn’t Gran Canaria all sun-burnt Brits and fry-ups?
Gran Canaria remains a popular spot for UK package tourists, thanks to the sprawling resorts that occupy the south and eastern coasts – places where it is indeed easy to find a traditional English breakfast (and lobster-coloured compatriots).
if you prefer quiet resorts, some of the places to avoid in Gran Canaria include the resorts of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.
The island offers so much more than this, with diverse landscapes to explore, and a myriad of activities to enjoy.
Top activities in Gran Canaria for couples
Beach romance
Gran Canaria’s beaches are splendid for relaxing with your favourite person.
What is the nicest beach in Gran Canaria?
Try Playa de Maspalomas for water-sports and sunbathing, and Playa de Las Canteras for easy swimming and rewarding snorkelling.
For some real alone time, head to the isolated and beautiful Gui-Gui beach, which can only be reached by foot or by boat.
For a more accessible amorous seaside locale, head to Playa de Amadores – which translates as “lover’s beach”.
Romantic dining in Gran Canaria
A wonderful array of romantic restaurants guarantee some memorable candlelit dinners.
For a dress-up meal, try the superb La Aquarela – but make sure you book your table in advance.
Explore ‘Little Venice’
Mogan is known as ‘Little Venice’ because of its network of canals.
This picturesque little town is perfect for strolling hand-in-hand, before enjoying a sundowner drink by the sea.
Romantic hotels for couples in Gran Canaria
Mogan
Located in romantic Mogan, Cordial Mogan Playa is the perfect base for exploring this wonderful little town.
Puerto Rico
If you’re planning to stay in Puerto Rico, the Marina Suites offer spacious bedrooms with balconies that overlook the sea and the hotel’s impressive infinity pool.
What is the best resort in Gran Canaria for older couples?
In our opinion, the best resort for older couples in Gran Canaria has to be Bahia Feliz Bahia Feliz.
There’s a pretty, pedestrianised village square lined with pavement cafés and restaurants and the resort is small enough for everything to be with a short walking distance.
Things to do in Gran Canaria for families
Dolphin trips and sea fishing
Adults and children alike cannot help but adore a day spent dolphin spotting.
There are also plenty of sea-fishing trips, with smaller rods available for little fingers to hold.
Gran Canaria water parks and theme parks
Unless you’re staying for a month, you’re unlikely to squeeze in all the theme parks and water parks on Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria theme parks for younger children
However, if you’re travelling with under-10s, don’t miss Sioux City Park, San Augustin, with its incredible wild horse stampede and fun-packed showdowns.
Another hit with younger children is the Angry Birds Activity Park, with buggy rides, adventure playgrounds and a truly bonkers crazy golf course.
Activities for older children
For older kids, head to Hangar 37, a super-realistic shooting game that puts laser tag and paintballing in the shade.
A scrupulous approach to safety will put parents’ minds at rest.
Gran Canaria zoos and animal parks
Palmitos Park offers an incredible botanic garden, a large aviary and a must-visit dolphinarium.
For a classic zoo experience, head to Cocodrilo Park, where plenty of activities are available, alongside a selection of well-cared for exotic animals.
If you fancy your chances on the back of a camel, head to Camel Park Arteara, where you can also meet donkeys, pigs, sheep and more.
What is the best resort in Gran Canaria for families?
Puerto Rico is a great resort for a family holiday in Gran Canaria.
With a large number of family-orientated hotels and a great selection of restaurants within resort, Puerto Rico is also blessed with two family friendly beaches, the Blue Flag Playa Amedores and Puerto Rico beach.
Add to that two public swimming pools mini-golf courses, tennis courts and amusement arcades within resort and Lago Taurito waterpark just a 10-minute drive away, it’s easy to see why families return to Puerto Rico for their Gran Canaria holidays, year after year.
Family-friendly hotels in Gran Canaria
Playa del Ingles
For a five-star stay, Seaside Palm Beach offers a kids’ mini club, a children’s pool with polo goals, tennis courts and a full children’s menu.
Puerto Rico
The Altamar Aparthotel in Puerto Rico offers a fantastic all-inclusive stay option for families looking to stay in this popular resort, with a Mini Club, children’s playground and kid’s pool on site, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
San Bartolomé de Tirajana
For a more rustic experience, consider Hotel Rural Las Tirajanas, with its Alpine looks and family-centric service. Archery, volleyball, table tennis and more are available, plus easy access to some great hiking trails.
Gran Canaria hotel booking tip
It’s a good idea to book a hotel near where you plan to spend most of your time, as some hotels are located on hillsides away from the coast.
If you’re travelling to Gran Canaria on your holidays with prams or young children, taking taxis or buses down to the beach every day could prove stressful – and costly.
Hidden gems in Gran Canaria for both couples and families
El Bufadero de la Garita
This strange basalt rock formation by the sea features a large hole which fills with seawater, which then spurts out like a fountain.
Be sure to keep at a safe distance.
El Pico de las Nieves
This is the highest peak in Gran Canaria, and while not suitable for young kids, older children are sure to love the ascent.
The views are impressive – especially since you can see Spain’s highest mountain on the neighbouring island of Tenerife!
Presa de las Niñas (The Girls’ Dam)
Hidden in a pine forest in the island’s south, this stunning lake is perfect for camping. A spot steeped in mysteries – some of which are very spooky indeed.

The location and beach proximity are great. So is the nice, private garden in front of the place. The kitchen is well equipped and the view from the master bedroom upstairs to the beach side are soothing. The place has three bathrooms, two of which have a shower, which is very convenient.

Location was perfect for my 19year old son and I. Step out back gate and on promenade 2 mins from beach to the left and to the right more beaches, shops, cafes etc a little further up. From front door turn left, 2 mins to supermarket for all essentials and beside shop is a fantastic Italian restaurant! Other places within a minutes walk also but these we liked best. Diana our host was exceptional, communication great, on time to meet us (even though we were early!) And she thought of everything…shampoo, shower gels cotton buds and it was no different in the kitchen all the cleaning products were there . Best part for us was the pool, hearing the sea when eating, I would highly recommend here and I would stay again. It is a quiet area which suited us but may not be to everyones liking if you want a busy nightlife closeby..some previous reviews mention that some things in house could be updated and this may be true of some items but we’re just coming out of a global pandemic and people are trying to get back on their feet so this wasn’t a problem for us, it was clean and functional and we were so happy to be abroad for the first time since 2019we didn’t care at all. Thank you Diana for a wonderful stay❤💚

0 9000 County. Smooth sandy bottom, funny waves, a lot of space, but also a lot of tourists.
Clear. Sunbeds. Bars nearby and cafes and a supermarket with cold drinks
Sunbed with umbrella 5 euros for the whole day
From all the other beach that I’ve been on Gran Canaria, I find that this one was the best on the island . There’s nice shop and restaurant by the beach. You can also rent long chairs.
It’s a nice walk over the sand dunes and to walk in the sea as the sand gets very hot under foot ouch!!!!
The beach is clean. Everyone is friendly there’s a tourist information office and a place where you can change and leave your stuff in a safe for 1.50 €. Loads of shops & restaurants along the beach.
Inmensa playa con servicio de hamacas, restauracion y para la práctica de deportes náuticos. Recomiendo correr a la orilla de la playa. Brisa, sol y dunas al fondo=paraíso
Nice big waves, good sunbeds, hot sun en cold seawater, lots of fun when u go in the water for the first time😱
Huge sandy beach with dunes. It kind of looks like a desert.
There are many lovely restaurants at the boulevard/cc anexo II. Go to Pub Dragon for the best cocktails (the Mary Special cocktail is a must!).
North or Deep South is the best to be in Playa del Inglés 😎☀️🌊
South side of the island one of the best beach in the island Really good for a nice early walk or running.
Touristy, concrete jungle. Not our cup of tea. Saw many beaches around the world which are a thousand time prettier.
Klamotte! A very nice restaurant near the beach. Kind people and good food!
Quite crowded, but nice beach and good connection to hotels & restaurants.
Las dunas son impresionantes
Little bit crowdy, but wonderful for morning run.
Try the garlic shrimps at the restaurant Munich II… a complete must
Our favorite place 😉
