The Story Of Concorde’s Trips To The Canary & Balearic Islands

Concorde was an iconic supersonic passenger jet that captured the imaginations of a generation. It made the dream of Mach 2 commercial air travel a reality for a fortunate few, allowing them to cross the Atlantic Ocean in just three hours.

During its time in the sky, it flew between destinations in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Its most popular routes were those between London and New York, Paris and Washington, D.C., Bahrain and London.

However, not too many people are aware of the historic flights of Concorde to the Canary and Balearic Islands. So, what was so special about these flights?

The special “Concorde Mallorca” flight

Mallorca has been a leader in tourism since the 1950s and was one of the first Spanish islands to offer package holidays. Today, the island remains one of the most sought-after short-haul destinations for British tourists, welcoming an estimated 2.3 million people from the UK each year, according to ABC Mallorca.

To celebrate the 31st anniversary of the first Concorde flight, British Airways planned a special Concorde flight from Manchester Airport to Palma de Mallorca Airport in Spain in 1983.

Photo: British Airways

Flights between the United Kingdom and the Balearic Islands are normally operated overland via mainland Europe, usually through France. However, in order to reach the speed of Mach 2 and break the sound barrier, Concorde had to make a detour over the Atlantic Ocean in order to land at Palma airport. As a result, the total flight time between Manchester and Mallorca was two hours and four minutes.

It is worth noting that Concorde was less suitable for overland flights because of the noise of its sonic boom. This is caused when an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, causing compression and fusion of the pressure waves surrounding the aircraft. These can be startling to unprepared people on the ground.

To minimize the impact on people on the ground, supersonic flights over land were generally not allowed. Therefore, Concorde could only reach its full speed of Mach 2 over the open sea.

The flight between Manchester and Mallorca was flown by a Concorde with the registration G-BOAB. The captain flying was H. J. Linfield. G-BOAB was the third Concorde delivered to British Airways, arriving in 1976. The British Airways Concordes also flew for Braniff International Airlines in the United States. Today, G-BOAB is parked at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and is visible to passengers departing from the airport, Planespotters.net data indicates.

The historic flight of Concorde to Lanzarote

Mallorca was not the only Spanish island where Concorde landed. In November 1999, the British Airways Concorde with registration G-BOAC landed at the airport of Arrecife (ACE) in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands, the southernmost region of Spain and the largest and most populous archipelago of Macaronesia.

The flight, which lasted just under three hours, was also the first and only commercial Concorde flight to the Canary Islands. According to a local media outlet, the Concorde brought passengers who were leaving from the island for a luxury cruise.

The plane that landed on the island of Lanzarote, known as “Alpha Charlie,” is now on display at Manchester Airport (MAN) in the Runway Visitor Park, according to Planespotters. net.

The G-BOAC was delivered in 1976 and was the second member of the British Airways Concorde fleet. Prior to its retirement, Concorde “Alpha Charlie” also flew for Braniff International Airlines. While the Concorde was flown by the US airline, it was never owned by Braniff.

Some of the most famous Concorde flights of British Airways

Concorde, a supersonic aircraft manufactured by French and British companies, was operated by two airlines: British Airways and Air France. Originally, many other airlines had given options for the Concorde, but ultimately only these two owned the aircraft.

Air France and British Airways each had seven Concorde aircraft in their fleets, which made several record-breaking flights between 1976 and 2003.

The first commercial flight of a British Airways Concorde, one of the most well-known flights, took place in 1976, traveling from London to Bahrain. Incredibly, the flight took only three and a half hours – a fraction of the time it would have taken a regular aircraft to cover the same distance.

In 1985, thousands of people gathered at Sydney Airport to witness one of the most renowned flights ever, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The British Airways Concorde flight took off from London Heathrow and landed in Sydney, breaking the previous London-to-Sydney record by almost 33 hours.

With delays and flypasts, the record-breaking flight lasted 17 hours, three minutes, and 45 seconds. The Concorde flight time beat the old speed record set in 1960 by 32 hours, 41 minutes, and one second.

About Concorde

In a world where color TVs were introduced not so long ago, the Concorde program was a technological marvel.

Although the Concorde was known for its small cabin and narrow aisles, it could accommodate a maximum of 124 passengers. Powered by four Rolls-Royce engines, it reached a top speed of Mach 2.04 (2,179 kilometers per hour) at cruising altitude and could travel up to 3,900 nautical miles (7,222 kilometers).

Before Concorde was certified for passenger flights, it underwent 5,000 hours of testing to ensure its safety. According to British Airways, this makes it the most-tested aircraft of all time

Its service marked a significant period in the history of aviation, but sadly came to an inevitable end marked by rising operating costs and falling ticket sales

After 27 years of service, British Airways ended the world’s only remaining supersonic passenger air service in October 2003, retiring Concorde. The final scheduled commercial flight, BA002 from JFK, operated by G-BOAG, marked the end of the era.

British Airways’ fleet of seven aircraft was subsequently dispersed for preservation at Barbados, Edinburgh, Filton, Manchester, New York, and Seattle, with one more remaining at London Heathrow Airport.

Spain

Spain is one of the world leaders in beach holidays, which surprises tourists with its unpredictability. Spain’s beach resorts are located on the Mediterranean coast, consisting more of resort areas than of individual resorts (Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, Costa del Sol …), as well as on islands in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Atlantic Ocean (Canary and the Balearic Islands). All Spanish resorts have excellent conditions for a comfortable and varied holiday. A wonderful climate and clean beaches, an abundance of entertainment complexes and monuments, delicious national cuisine make the country incredibly attractive for tourism and beach holidays. nine0015 The swimming season in Spain on the continent begins in June and ends in October, in the Canaries you can swim all year round, in the Balearic Islands – from April to November.

Italy

Relax your body and enrich yourself internally – this is the motto of Italian seaside resorts.

Every beach resort in the country gives tourists the opportunity not only to soak up the sand and swim in the sea, but also to visit numerous architectural monuments, ancient ruins and museums. nine0003

The Italian coastline is very picturesque, with many beautiful coves and sandy beaches. Almost the entire coast of the country can be considered a resort. All the beaches here are municipal, but only the first 5 meters from the water are free. Night swimming is prohibited by law.

France

The sea coast of France overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In general, its length is more than 3000 km.

The Atlantic coast is characterized by rather cool water, even in the height of the summer season, but the water is cleaner here. The beaches of the Atlantic, as a rule, are sandy, but there is a problem with the tides – in some places the sea recedes from the coast for a kilometer (Brittany and Normandy). nine0015 The Mediterranean is much warmer and sunnier. One of the most famous beach regions in Europe is the French Cote d’Azur, which consists of large and small resorts, the most popular of which are Nice and Cannes. The beaches here are sandy and pebbly.

The island is almost untouched by civilization – most of its territory is occupied by a flat rocky plateau covered with greenery.

In 1971, the British progressive rock band King Crimson released a 10-minute romantic composition Formentera Lady, which meant Circe, who charmed Odysseus.

Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands

The Canaries archipelago consists of seven islands of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa. The island has a well-developed hotel network and a lot of entertainment. For example, visiting the Bandama crater, Teror village, Guanche cave settlements and Gothic cathedrals. In the capital Las Palmas, the Columbus House Museum is interesting. You can buy this drink at the Araukas rum factory, and Palmitos Park attracts exotic and animal lovers. nine0003

Tenerife

One of the most popular islands of the Canary archipelago among Russian tourists.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Capital of the Spanish province of the same name, the island of Tenerife, and one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands (seat of the autonomous parliament). 200 thousand people live in the city. It has a cozy port, beautiful modernist buildings and green streets. The province got its name from the silver Holy Cross of the Conquistadors, which Alonso Fernandez de Lugo erected after landing on the coast of Añaso in 1494 (the cross is stored in the National Museum of Tenerife – Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción).

San Cristobal de la Laguna

The city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

Historic city on the island of Tenerife. Founded in 1497 on the shores of a lake that disappeared in the 19th century. It has the status of a religious and cultural capital.

La Laguna has two cores: the more ancient Upper Town with a spontaneous layout; and the Lower City, the first “city-territory” organized in accordance with the latest urban planning concepts. On the wide streets and squares there are many beautiful churches, public and private buildings erected in the 16th-18th centuries. nine0003

In the old part of the city is the Cathedral of San Cristobal de la Laguna. The famous churches of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Royal Cathedral of Christ La Laguna are also located here.

Tourism centers. There are two major tourism centers on the island – in the north and in the south. In the north, in the city of Puerto de la Cruz and its environs, it is interesting to visit the Botanical Garden and the Zoological Loro Park, where you can watch an amazing show of fur seals, dolphins, killer whales and parrots. nine0003

In the dry and sunny south are the tourist centers of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos with many attractions. Other centers of the south coast: El Medano (specializes in windsurfing), Costa del Silencio, Los Gigantes, Las Galletas.

On the island it is interesting to see the artificial lake Lago Martianez (complex of pools for swimming in Puerto de la Cruz), the Teide volcano with a height of 3718 m and the Cañadas del Teide National Park. In the Anaga mountain range there are residential caves in the rocks. The city of Icod de los Vinos is adorned with the symbol of the island – a 1000-year-old dragon tree. It is interesting to visit Garachico, where there is a monument to the Canarian emigrant, to look at the island of the Guimar pyramid of ship models in the Thor Heyerdahl Museum and the Las Mercedes forest with vegetation of the pre-glacial period. nine0003

A distinctive feature of Tenerife is large, black volcanic sand. Bulk beaches of golden sand brought from the Sahara are only in the south in Playa de las Americas and not far from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Las Teresitas beach.

Most of the hotels are classified as 4*, there is a wide range of apart-hotels.

Siam Park, a new-generation themed water park, is very popular among Russians. Here, visitors can make a “journey” to the Kingdom of Thailand (Siam), as well as have fun on ultra-modern water rides. This is the largest theme park built in the Siamese style. nine0003

Did you know that…

… the beaches of Tenerife have black sand?

Lanzarote

The fourth largest island of the Canary archipelago is famous for its lunar landscapes. It is also called the “island of fiery mountains”: here, in the Timanfaya National Park, about three hundred volcanoes fit in. A third of the island is covered with ash and basalt – these are the consequences of two strong volcanic eruptions that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. The entire island has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

On the southern coast of the island, in the Bay of Papagayo, are the best beaches of Lanzarote with crystal clear water and white sand. In the southeast are the oldest resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. This is a favorite vacation spot for windsurfers.

The relatively young resort of Playa Blanca is famous not only for excellent service, but also for the most beautiful beaches of the coast. It is best suited for families with children. Famara beach is very popular among surfers.

The famous painter César Manrique was born in Lanzarote. He did a lot to make the island more popular with tourists. Thanks to him, one of the most beautiful local places became famous – the Jameos del Agua cave with terraces hanging over an underground green lake, and a concert hall, the interior of which was created by nature itself. In an abandoned quarry among cactus fields, Manrique created the Cactus Park. On a rock 479 highm with one of the best views in Lanzarote, he found a place for the observation deck Mirador del Rio.

Fuerteventura

The island is famous for many kilometers of beaches with light sand, the best in the Canary Islands. The sea here is shallow, the water is clear, turquoise. The island attracts those who come to the Canary Islands for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

In the west of the island are the Windward beaches (somewhat dangerous for swimming), in the east there are two tourist centers: Costa Calma near the Leeward beach and Morro Jable. And in the north of Fuerteventura there is a huge dune beach – Corralejo. Here are the longest beaches in the archipelago. nine0003

A very popular resort is Jandia, located in the south of the island on a land area connected to the “mainland” by an isthmus 5 km wide. There are magnificent beaches covered with white sand. The main dominant is the highest mountain peak of the island of Pico de Sarza (807 m). It offers a delightful sea panorama and a view of the sandy beach of Cofete.

It is interesting to visit the fishing village of El Cotillo located to the west.

The main sport on the island is windsurfing. World championships are regularly held here. The island attracts lovers of spearfishing. nine0003

The airport is located in El Matorral, 5 km southwest of Puerto del Rosario, the island’s capital, where half of the island’s population lives.

Did you know that…

… the island of La Gomera is called the island of Columbus, because it was here that he made his last stop before “discovering America”?

La Gomera

It is also called the island of Columbus, because in 1492 the famous navigator made the last stop on Homer before sailing to the shores of the New World. The landscapes of the island amaze with the exoticism of green steep valleys, with unusual artificial terraces overgrown with palm trees. The central plateau of the island is covered with dense vegetation. A thousand-year-old laurel-cherry forest is also located here. nine0003

San Sebestian de La Gomera is the capital and largest city of the island. Most of the hotels are concentrated in Playa de Santiago, the sunniest area of La Gomera. The tourist center is located next to the fishing village where you can taste delicious fresh fish. A small beach and the village of Valle del Rey is a center of alternative tourism, its surroundings are perfect for solitude.

La Palma

“The beautiful island” is what the Canarians call it for its lush nature of La Palma. It is the third most populous of all the Canary Islands. nine0003

Caldera de Taburiente, the mouth of an extinct volcano with a diameter of 10 km, occupies the center of the island and since 1954 has had the status of a National Park. The pines that surround this gigantic “depression”, together with the geological landscape, are the most famous and impressive place on La Palma. To review the local beauties, there are several viewing platforms: La Cumbresita, Las Chosas and Roque de los Muchachos (2426 m) – the highest point of the island.

El Hierro

For many centuries the island was considered the most remote and mysterious. Thanks to this isolated location, ancient traditions have been preserved here. nine0003

Most of the island’s coastline is steep, but there are small coves and natural pools with crystal clear ocean water. The forest of La Deesa is the last relic of the Canarian juniper, a tree with bizarre shapes. Grapes and pineapples are grown here.

Most of the hotels are concentrated in the capital city of Valverde and in the El Golfo area.

Prohíben cartel de Demi Lovato por ser ofensivo para los cristianos

Luis Ernesto Quintana Barney

Costa Blanca

All the information you need on La Costa Blanca, maps, how to find us, transport, restaurants, golf, diving, sailing club, fiestas, beaches, towns and the Residential Resort Cumbre del Sol.

Located on the Spanish Mediterranean, La Costa Blanca is part of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, the province of Alicante. The Autonomous Community of Valencia comprises the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón and, in turn, it is divided into different tourist names: Costa Blanca, Benidorm, Costa Azahar and Valencia.

La Costa Blanca is located on the Mediterranean coast.  Its coastline stretches 219 km. and its total area 5,817 km². It has 141 towns/cities with a total of 1,379,762 inhabitants. The capital is Alicante, with 274,577 inhabitants.

La Costa Blanca is the tourist name for the area that stretches from Denia to Pilar de la Horadada and from Orihuela to the Valleys of Marina Alta. More than 219 km of coastline scattered with soft-sand and calm-water beaches as well as extraordinary coves and cliffs, with a very characteristic climate of an average temperate of approx. 18º C all year round.

A landscape dominated by the Mediterranean Sea which fills the coastline and the overhanging mountains with light and turquoise blue, revealing the wonders of the landscape. From the valleys cultivated with crops arranged in Moorish-style terraces to the horizons filled with mountains crowned by oaks, pine and carob trees and perfumed by a wide variety of aromatic plants, mountain and hiking enthusiasts are guaranteed well- indicated routes through the inland regions and the mountainous areas of the coast.

An area with history treasuring numerous archaeological sites, breathtaking monuments, artistic expressions, and more than one hundred medieval castles and fortresses that demarcate La Costa Blanca as living proof of the history and the different cultures that  inhabited this area and have enriched our culture.

On the coast and the inland areas of La Costa Blanca you will have the opportunity to discover the richness of our gastronomy in a wide choice of restaurants and the quality of the wines produced in our wineries. The staple Mediterranean diet (fish, vegetables, fruit, cereals and olive oil) has its main bastion in La Costa Blanca.

As part of La Costa Blanca, we can highlight internationally famous places like Denia, Javea, Teulada-Moraira, Benissa, Calpe, Altea, Poble Nou de Benitachell, Santa Pola, Guardamar, Torrevieja, without forgetting, Jalón, Alcalalí, Lliber, Villena, Alcoi, Elche, Gata de Gorgos; all set in the most beautiful and charming landscapes of the Spanish Mediterranean, which are full of contrasts between valleys and mountainous areas, historic traces of different civilizations, and a gastronomic, artisan and festive tradition that is unique in the world.

The contrast between small inland villages and the famous tourist areas with an intense night life, make it one of the most attractive tourist and residential destinations in Europe where to enjoy the sun and the beach in direct contact with nature.  All this coupled with an exhaustive tourism infrastructure that includes two airports, new roads, railway, good communications and a modern network of roads that connect the main coastal areas with the inland towns and cities.

There are thousands of leisure options, such as the theme parks of Terra Mítica, Aqualandia, Mundomar, Terra Natura, and endless popular and traditional fiestas, sports, sailing club, golf, paddle, diving, hiking trails, cycling routes as well as excellent quality services, making it an ideal place to spend your holidays or to establish your second residence.

Holiday Guide Costa Blanca – Video, reviews, tourist information, facts, maps

The Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca, or White Coast, is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. The region extends 200 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast through the province of Alicante, stretching from Gandia to Torrevieja.

Visitors to the Costa Blanca are spoilt for choice, for the destinations are varied and diverse. The Costa Blanca has a resort to suit every taste. From the most bustling and cosmopolitan resorts such as Alicante itself, or Benidorm, to those which still maintain their rural air beside the sea, such as Moraira.

History
The Costa Blanca has a celebrated and rich history, and there are many interesting sites throughout the region, which have brought
evidence to light that date back the region to the Neolithic Era.

The region was also a strategically important for many settlers, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. With each civilization living a mark of its identity on the land. Probably the most evident is the influence of the Roman and Moorish occupations, which are present even today in the villages, monuments and cultural attractions of the Costa Blanca.

Natural surroundings
To the North, a curtain of mountains runs parallel to the sea, descending at times to form cliffs; to the South, a vast plain of sand patches, palm trees
and salt deposits make up the backdrop for the beaches.

From the valleys, which are covered with stepped orchards and keep alive its Moorish past, to the palm trees of unmistakable African origin, the
horizons of the Costa Blanca offer the most varied attractions.

The fields of almond trees, the vineyards, the fruit
orchards and the magnificent palm trees, which form vegetation emphasizing theoriental nature of the landscape.

Natural caves exist within the cliffs, which can be
visited by using precarious ladders; the caves are known, because of their dangerous conditions, as pesqueras de la muerte (fishing grounds of death).

Heading inland in this region, the traveller will find, among the vineyards and fields, some fine examples of riu-rau, a popular type of dwelling preceded by an arcaded front which has inspired many of the villas that have been constructed more recently.

Towns & Villages of the Costa Blanca
Denia is a delightful cosmopolitan town located along the Mediterranean coastline, where the sun
shines almost all year. Its climate of mild temperatures and its 20 kms of sandy beaches and rocky coves makes Denia an ideal place to holidaying in.

Benisa is located towards the northern end of the Costa Blanca, just off the A-7 Motorway; the
trip to and from Alicante airport takes just over one hour. The stretch of coastline between Calpe and Maraira is home to a number of quiet relaxing bays. The scenery is magnificent; spectacular rocks contrasting with the high mountain backdrop.

Javea is a small, historic town, free of high rise buildings offering a relaxing holiday atmosphere. The local people are friendly and affable. The clean, warm, blue Mediterranean Sea laps the beautiful beaches and coves that Javea has to offer.

Moraira is small coastal town situated in the beautiful mountainous north-eastern tip of the
Costa Blanca. The resort is conveniently placed between the airports of Alicante and Valencia (about 90km from each). The surrounding region has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, with beautiful and unspoilt scenery and many small villages to explore.

At the heart of the Costa Blanca, within the region
of Valencia lies the ancient fishing village of Calpe. Now transformed into a tourist magnet, the town sits in an ideal location, easily accessed by the A7 motorway and the N332 that runs from Valencia to Alicante; its approximately one hour
drive from the airport at Alicante.

In the centre of the La Marina Baixa region, is the popular Spanish resort of Benidorm, one of the
main tourist destinations along the Costa Blanca. Its excellent beaches, wide variety of accommodation, restaurants and many recreational activities means it’s a hit with tourists from all over Spain and Northern Europe.

Alicante is centrally located on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The air of the city is pervaded with the scents of the sea; indeed the city has been an important seaport for many
centuries. There is nothing as pleasant as strolling along the quayside promenade lined by four rows of palms, tessellated with marble in Alicante red, cream and black in imitation of the waves of the Mediterranean.

Torrevieja is situated on the Costa Blanca, approximately 40 minutes south of Alicante
airport. It isn’t a resort in the package holiday sense, there are only a few hotels and the area is much loved by the Spanish who flock here during the summer months for their holidays. The town is surrounded by excellent urbanisations, all with
pools and beautiful gardens and the whole area enjoys fabulous beaches with fine sand and crystal clear waters.

Santa Pola
is located on the Costa Blanca,
approximately 20 minutes drive south of Alicante airport. A small fishing port, Santa Pola is famous for its variety of landscapes, from the views of the
distant mountains to the wild sand dunes.

The town of Guardamar with a population of just over 11,000 has historically played the role of guardian of the river Segura. Guardamar’s strategic position on a hill over the Vega Baja made it an ideal settlement for the various cultures that have inhabited this part of Spain over the centuries.

Orihuela is the capital of the region of the same name; the administrative area stretches inland from the coast and covers a number of smaller towns and villages, as well as three golf courses, two marinas, the beaches at La Zenia and Dehesa de Campoamor and a considerable amount of farmland.

Cuisine
Try any of the delicious varieties of rice dishes, combined with shellfish, fish or meat that are renowned in the region of the Costa Blanca.

Climate
The climate offers variations, but the temperatures are usually mild, with the annual average a little higher than 17ºC.

Costa Blanca is one of those parts of Spain that has its own access to the sea, there are also about 300 days of sunshine a year and, of course, huge sandy beaches do not go unnoticed. But, despite all the charms of this fertile place, it has never competed with the most famous resorts in the world, such as the Canaries, etc. The reason can be sought in the fact that it is located far from Barcelona. But for people who are much more important than ordinary human joys, i.e. sunny area, sea and, of course, the inexpensive price of the Costa Blanca is just right. nine0003

Most of the local population is made up of people of different nationalities. Despite the lack of jobs, and problems from the financial crisis, local residents have adapted to profit from tens of thousands of tourists, as well as real estate sales that will be of interest to those individuals who want to buy inexpensive housing in Spain. Torrevieja is a Russian corner in Spain. Here in every restaurant there is a menu in Russian, sales assistants understand our speech well, and of course there are Russian media. In summer it is about +25 degrees, in winter there are no severe colds, the temperature does not fall below +17 Celsius. You can buy an apartment in Torrevieja from €45,000 and more, the price also includes the location of the house and its quality. And apartments with pretty decent conditions, which offer a view of the sea for €65-120 thousand.

What Is The Hottest Country In Europe During The Month Of December?

8 Answers

Liam Sheasby answered

The hottest country in Europe in December, on average, is Greece, more specifically the southern part of Greece, Crete.

The average December temperature in Crete is 18 degrees C. There will be warmer days, of course, but this is the average temperature. There is a normally a lot of rainfall in December throughout most of Europe.

Cyprus is also a country that can be warm in December. Even though, geographically speaking, Cyprus is part of Asia; the island has always been a part of Europe. The temperatures in Cyprus in December can reach the low 20 degrees C, and the weather could be described as spring-like.

Sunbathing and swimming are possible on certain winter days, as the country’s geographical location means that the standard European winter starts a little later than in most other European countries.

Other warm European countries in December are southern Spain (particularly Andalusia), and southern parts of Turkey.

Andalusia is the southern-most Spanish province and the average daily winter temperature is 17 degrees C. The reason it remains so warm in Andalusia in the winter months is because the Sierra Nevada stops cool air masses coming from the north and the Mediterranean allows warm air masses to enter from the south.

It can sometimes however, snow in Andalusia, despite the subtropical climate the province benefits from.

Generally, the further south in Europe you travel the warmer it is likely to be, due to the geography of the continent. The Canary Islands, situated off the west coast of Northern Africa, also have very reasonable temperatures in December. The islands are part of Spain and therefore qualify as part of Europe. The temperatures here can reach the mid-20s Celsius at times in December.

UK saw hottest-ever year in 2022 as Europe’s climate warms

By JILL LAWLESSJanuary 5, 2023 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Britain had its warmest year on record in 2022, official figures showed Thursday, the latest evidence that climate change is transforming Europe’s weather.

The Met Office weather agency said the provisional annual average temperature in the U.K. was 10.03 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit), the highest since comparable records began in 1884. The previous record was 9.88 Celsius (49.8 Fahrenheit) set in 2014.

Met Office scientists said human activity — primarily fossil fuel emissions — has made such warm conditions vastly more likely. Britain’s 10 hottest years on record have all been since 2003.

“The results showed that recording 10C in a natural climate would occur around once every 500 years, whereas in our current climate it could be as frequently as once every three to four years,” said Met Office climate attribution scientist Nikos Christidis.

Britain is not alone. France’s average temperature was above 14 Celsius (57.2 Fahrenheit) in 2022, making it the hottest year since weather readings began in 1900. Switzerland’s meteorological service said the alpine nation’s annual average temperature of 7.4 Celsius (45,3 Fahrenheit) was “by far the highest value since measurements began in 1864.

  • Spellbinding polar night gets darker in warming Arctic

  • Snow leads to massive pileup in Wisconsin, dozens injured

  • Storm Cheneso picks up in Madagascar, more flooding to come

Spain also had its hottest year since records started in 1961, according to the national weather agency Aemet, with an average daily temperature of 15.4 Celsius (59.7 Fahrenheit). It said the four hottest years on record for the southern European country have all come since 2015.

Last year saw summer drought and heat waves across much of Europe, with the temperature in Britain rising above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for the first time on record. Norway’s Svalbard islands in the Arctic had their warmest summer in more than a century of record-keeping. The archipelago’s average temperature for June, July and August was 7.4 Celsius (45.3 Fahrenheit), the Norwegian Meteorological Institute said.

Autumn brought more heavy rain in parts of Europe, including the mountainous Italian island of Ischia, where downpours in November triggered a massive landslide that pushed cars and buildings into the sea and killed at least a dozen people.

Unlike the U.S. and Canada, which have been hit by bitter cold and snowstorms, much of Europe is experiencing unseasonably warm winter weather.

In Germany, the year ended with the warmest New Year’s Eve on record, with temperatures reaching 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) in the south of the country. Belarus, Belgium, Czechia, Latvia, Poland and the Netherlands all set national record daily highs for Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.

As 2023 begins, many low and medium-altitude ski resorts in the Alps, the Pyrenees and other European ranges are suffering from a lack of snow.

In Bosnia, spring-like weather has foiled even artificial snow — either it’s too warm to make it, or it melts soon after being spat out onto the slopes. Along the slopes in Bjelasnica near Sarajevo on Wednesday, snow accumulation amounted to little more than several white patches on an otherwise grassy landscape of brown and green.

The island of Tenerife in the Spanish Canaries, is putting conservation at the heart of its latest marketing push, encouraging families to include the country resort at the top of its holiday list.

In addition to enjoying its warm temperatures, families can book a whale-spotting tour with one of the many companies that comply with the Sustainability Charter for Whale and Dolphin Watching, or stargaze in Teide National Park, which was recently recognised as a “Starlight Tourist Destination”.

Here are five offerings for travellers keen to visit the Atlantic archipelago while keeping conservation close at heart:

Tenerife, World Heritage Site for Whales

In 2021, Tenerife was recognised as the first-ever World Heritage Site for Whales in Europe by the World Cetacean Alliance, in specific relation to the stunning stretch of water that runs along the southwest coast, from Tenerife Punta El Fraile (Teno) to Punta Salema (Rasca, Las Galletas).

Photo: Gustavo A. Pérez on www.unsplash.com

Whale watching and dolphin spotting is a must in Tenerife, seeing these creatures up close and personal is an unforgettable experience for both parents and children alike.

Companies such as the Royal Delfin Catamaran offer this experience whilst ensuring no marine life is harmed in the process, through its compliance with the Sustainability Charter for Whale and Dolphin Watching.

This ensures Tenerife is a tourism space that coexists and cares for the habitat of whales and dolphins at sea, whilst still offering a first-class visitor experience.

    Celestial discoveries
The Teide National Park was recently recognised as a “Starlight Tourist Destination” by the Starlight Foundation, a foundation which focuses on protecting and preserving the night sky.

    Photo: Anna Biasoli on www.unsplash.com

The area was given national park status in 1954, and is equally beautiful by night as it is by day. For an unforgettable family experience, families can join a celestial tour hosted by professionals who guide them through the stars above.

Teide National Park’s astronomical offerings are not exclusive to the sky either, as its geological formation – which includes volcanoes, craters, vents, lava flows and more – forms a brilliant array of shapes and colours, earning itself the comparison to “walking on Mars” among visitors.

    Bird Watching
Tenerife is home to over 800 species of fauna and flora that are exclusive to the island. Each year, more than 200 species of birds flock to the island. Top birdwatching locations include Mirador Pico del Inglés and La Caldera (La Orotava).

First hotel chain in Canary Islands aligned with the 2030 agenda through biosphere
Families can check out the vibrant, concept-led hotel group, Coral Hotels, which is the first hotel chain in the Canary Islands to start the journey to become a sustainable Biosphere chain, and works in line with the commitment that Tenerife has to be a Biosphere Destination.

Obtaining the Biosphere certificate is the next natural step in the hotel group’s commitment to sustainable development, following its commitment to using 100% renewable energy across its properties.

And for a day away from the kids…

Organic Wine Tasting in the middle of a lava flow
For a day when parents wish to indulge in some quality time leaving the kids in capable hands of the child care team, then a visit to the Ferrera Bodega is a must.

Located in the south of Tenerife, it spans across four hectares of land located in the middle of a lava flow, whilst being sat 1,000 metres above sea.

Isolated from other properties and vineyards due to the lava flow, it avoids cross-contamination, meaning its produce is completely organic.

Luxury Tenerife Holidays, Travel & Accommodation Packages 2023

    Overview

Sun-baked and lined with spectacular tropical waters, Tenerife is the ideal destination for a beach holiday. But beyond the luxury coastal resorts and glitzy urban waterfronts, there’s a raw wild side to this volcanic island that makes it perfect for adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts. A luxury holiday to Tenerife combines natural beauty with culture, nightlife, and urban charm.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and, with its patchwork of differing terrains and microclimates, a miniature continent in its own right. The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, sits at the island’s north-eastern tip overlooked by the spectacular Anaga mountain range. In this colourful city – host of the annual Carnaval – you’ll find excellent museums, independent boutiques, and a seafront botanical garden.

The main resorts can be found along Tenerife’s western coast, where the terrain is flatter, the sand soft and golden, and the waters calm and blue. In resort areas like Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, luxury hotels, chic restaurants, lively nightspots, and family-friendly attractions scatter the coast – these are great places to snorkel, sail, and splash around in thrilling water parks. For the best water sports head to El Médano, a town on the south coast with a stretch of warm yet windy beaches.

On Tenerife’s northern coast, you’ll encounter jagged black cliffs finished off with tints of mossy green, historic cities such as Puerto de la Cruz, and a slower pace to life. Inland, the Teide National Park dominates the horizon. Hike through the volcanic terrain, spotting geckos and kestrels as you go, before riding up Mount Teide in the cable car to drink in some astonishing views. The vein-like landscape of this Island pulsates with the heartbeat of adventure.

    When To Visit

Year-round warm weather can be enjoyed in Tenerife, however, the most popular time to visit is May to September. During these months, the weather is reliably hot and dry, particularly in the southwest.

If you’re wanting an active holiday or are keen to visit Mount Teide, head to Tenerife in the spring when the temperatures are cooler and the wildflowers are in bloom. During winter, snowfall typically means the mountain stays closed, however, February is the month to visit if you’re keen to experience the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnaval.

    Food & Drink

A luxury holiday to Tenerife lets you sample food from around the world in the comfort of 5-star surroundings. At the beach resorts, you’ll dine at buffet and à la carte restaurants, sampling exquisite fare under the stars or watching the sunset over the ocean.

The Perro De Presa Canario’s cat-like feet give it a distinctive, graceful gait.

The Perro De Presa Canario is an ancient breed, dating back to the 15th century. Developed on the Canary Islands, the breed was used to protect and herd cattle. Unfortunately, his size and strength made him a popular choice for those involved in dogfighting. After many generations, with the history of attacking predators and fighting dogs in his bloodlines, today’s Perro De Presa Canario can be a good companion for the right household but does not generally do well in homes with other pets and children.

See all of our expert product reviews.

Unfortunately, the tremendous strength and bite force of the breed, along with some fatal attacks that have made the news, means the Presa is not welcome in some areas.

    Perro De Presa Canario Mixes

The Perro De Presa Canario is a rare breed, so many breeders choose to devote their efforts to purebred breeding. There are a few crosses that are available for those looking for something different. They include a cross between the Presa Canario and Bulldog, known as the English Presa Bulldog, the Presa Canario, and Great Dane, known as the Presa Dane, and the Presa and the Mastiff, known as the English Presa Mastiff.

3 Pros and Cons of Owning a Perro De Presa Canario

    Pros! Cons!
A short coat with no undercoat means minimal grooming. Often dominant and strong-willed.
Excellent watchdog capabilities. Tremendous bite force and history of attacks make the breed unwelcome in many communities and may make finding homeowner’s insurance a challenge.
Loyal Require an experienced, dedicated owner for training.

Perro De Presa Canario Size and Weight

The Perro De Presa Canario is a large, short-haired breed that can reach 26 inches at the shoulder and routinely tops 100 lbs. In fact, males may reach nearly 150 lbs at maturity. The dog is longer than he is tall and has a sturdy build.

Perro De Presa Canario Common Health Issues

Most large breeds are predisposed to the same health conditions, and the Perro De Presa Canario is no different. Hip dysplasia, patellar avulsions, patellar luxation, and osteochondrodysplasia can all affect the breed. In addition, they are also prone to dilated cardiomyopathy and other heart conditions, cancers, and mast-cell tumors. Less serious conditions they may develop include demodectic mange and skin cysts.

    Perro De Presa Canario Temperament

The breed is expected to be calm and attentive. Very confident, the breed is obedient to those he knows and suspicious of strangers. They have a tendency towards expressing dominance, making it important they have an experienced owner. If other pets are in the home, they should always be supervised.

How to Take Care of a Perro De Presa Canario

Owning a Perro De Presa Canario is not a commitment to take lightly. Even the cost of providing quality food is significantly more than with many other breeds. Combined with the time and energy needed to keep the dog exercised and trained, and it is easy to see that this isn’t the breed for everyone.

The Best Dog Food for Perro De Presa Canarios

Feeding a high-quality, commercially prepared diet ensures that your Perro De Presa Canario has the nutrients needed to develop into a strong, healthy dog. Feed young dogs 3 times a day.

As adults, twice-a-day meals ensure your dog doesn’t need huge portions at each meal and he is more likely to take his time eating. Like other large breeds, using an elevated feeder makes eating easier and reduces the risk of gastric torsion.

Since Perro De Presa Canario have an elevated risk of dilated cardiomyopathy, it might benefit your dog to eat a dog food free from legumes. There is a link between legumes in dog food and heart failure.

Our suggestion at A-Z Animals for the Perro de Presa Canario is Nutro Ultra Large Breed Adult Dry Dog Food.

That’s because, with real chicken and salmon for high-quality protein, this dog food has all the glucosamine and chondroitin a Perro De Presa Canarios needs for mobile joints, and none of the ingredients your dog absolutely doesn’t need. Your Perro De Presa Canarios can do great without all the corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, and artificial additives found in many dog foods. Instead, this food offers dogs balanced nutrition with vital amino acids, vitamins, and more for energy and longevity.

Perro De Presa Canario Maintenance and Grooming

While the size and temperament of the Presa raise the price on nearly everything involved in dog ownership, the short coat makes grooming a breeze. Brushing with a bristle brush a few times a week and wiping with a damp cloth to remove loose hair and surface dirt is all you need to keep your dog looking good. He only needs the occasional bath.

It is important to clean his ears regularly and trim his fast-growing nails frequently. Both of these tasks are easiest if you introduce the process to your dog when he is young.

    Perro De Presa Canario Training

This breed is intelligent but lacks the eagerness to please which makes many breeds easy to train. Instead, expect a dog that can be stubborn, strong-willed, and test boundaries. Patience and experience are needed for successful training. It is also important to socialize the dog from a young age. The breed is suspicious of strangers by nature, and lack of socialization will only encourage this trait.

    Perro De Presa Canario Exercise

Despite his ponderous size, the Perro De Presa Canario has plenty of energy. Bred to be a working dog, he does best with multiple daily walks along with outdoor play.

    Perro De Presa Canario Puppies

The Perro De Presa Canario typically has between 7 and 9 puppies in each litter. Because of the Presa’s rapid growth and eventual size, it is important to offer high-quality puppy food from an early age.

Take advantage of the Presa’s natural curiosity as a pup for intensive socialization. Don’t take the pup in public until you get the okay from your veterinarian. Most vets prefer that you wait until your pup has at least one round of vaccinations before taking them out. Once it is safe to do so, spend time walking and playing with your pup in parks and other areas where he can observe other people and pets. Enrolling him in a puppy obedience class is another great way to work on socialization.

Perro De Presa Canario and Children

This breed is large, stubborn, and aloof. Combined with a bite force of 540 PSI, it is easy to see why they are not a good choice for most families. Attacks from a dog of this size and strength are devastating. In fact, the Perro De Presa Canario is a challenging breed and should be eliminated as the breed of choice for many people. Only an experienced dog owner with time to dedicate to training should consider one.

Dogs Similar to the Perro De Presa Canario

If you are interested in large guardian breeds, there are several to choose from.

    • Cane Corso – Often mistaken for the Presa. Lower prey drive and more affectionate temperament than the Presa, although still a guardian that requires experienced handling.
    • English Mastiff – A good choice for those looking for a large guardian who is also loving and fits in well with the family.
    • Fila Brasileiro – Also known as the Brazilian Mastiff, this large guardian breed has superior tracking skills, making him prone to following his nose.

Perro De Presa Canario Vs Cane Corso

The Perro De Presa Canario and Cane Corso have many similarities, but there are some key differences between the two breeds. The first is height. The Cane Corso is slightly taller, reaching up to 27″ at the shoulder, however, it is not as stocky, and weighs less than the Perro De Presa Canario.

The Presa has a black mask, regardless of his body color. While both have short coats, the Cane Corso’s feels rougher, because it is denser. While both breeds make excellent watchdogs, the Cane Corso is friendlier with both his family and strangers than the Presa.

The Cane Corso has a lower prey drive and tends to get along better with other pets and children than the Presa.

    History

The Perro de Presa Canario can be traced back to its ancestors, likely brought to the Canary Islands by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 15th century, where they lived among the indigenous cattle dogs. Whether guarding farms, catching cattle or eliminating wild or stray dogs, the Perro de Presa Canario was a dog of many purposes. The breed began to decline in the 1940s, but was revived again in the 1970s by reputable breeders who developed and bred the Perro de Presa Canario to its original size and character.

    Upkeep

The Perro de Presa Canario’s harsh, flat coat doesn’t require much grooming beyond regular weekly brushing and the occasional bath. He has strong, quickly growing nails that should be trimmed regularly, and his ears, which can be cropped, rose or naturally pendant, should be cleaned of any build-up of wax and debris. The Perro de Presa Canario’s energy level is relatively calm and stable, so he should be given regular exercise in a fenced yard or taken on several walks daily.

Drone did not have time to save the dogs from the lava trap on La Palma. They have already been taken away, leaving a poster “The dogs are all right”

Three dogs trapped in a lava trap on the island of Cumbre Vieja, Canary Islands, October 2021

    Aerocamaras / screenshot from video

Spanish drone operator Aerocamaras, who was trying to rescue three malnourished dogs from the erupting La Palma island, said the animals were taken away before the company’s drone reached their habitat.

    Reported by Reuters.

In early October, three dogs were spotted on the island of La Palma, where Cumbre Vieja had been erupting for almost two months. The animals were in a volcanic ash-covered courtyard, effectively trapped in a lava trap with no way to escape. nine0005

Drones dropped food on dogs for some time. Helicopters could not evacuate animals: it would be dangerous for them to fly up so close to the fumes that could damage the propellers. Aerocamaras eventually received permission to use the drone to rescue dogs.

But on the evening of October 21, when the drones flew up to the place where the animals were staying, they were not there. However, drones recorded human footprints and a poster: “Be strong, La Palma. The dogs are all right. Team-A “.

Apparently someone came and rescued the dogs before the drones arrived. Aerocamaras chief Jaime Pereira says it is possible: in recent weeks, the surface temperature of the area where the dogs were kept has cooled to 40-70 degrees Celsius, so theoretically someone could walk on it.

“We realized that something strange had happened, we checked all the places where [dogs] could hide, and found nothing. Now we only want to see the dogs to make sure they are all right and that they are the same dogs we were looking for.” , said Pereira.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma erupted about a month ago and it is not known when it will end, according to authorities. The island was on high alert after more than 22,000 aftershocks were recorded at the volcano a week before the eruption.

Lava flows burned more than 742 hectares of land and destroyed almost 2 thousand buildings. About 7 thousand people (out of 83 thousand of the island’s population) were evacuated. nine0005

Cumbre Vieja last woke up in 1971. However, in the Canary Islands, which includes La Palma, eruptions were also recorded in 2011, when the El Hierro volcano woke up.

    Brief information

    • Devoted to his family;

    • Needs proper education and training; nine0005

    • Can be an excellent guard.

    Character

Dogo Canario, as the name of the breed suggests, comes from Spain, or rather from the Canary Islands. His ancestors were mastiffs and local dogs – mahorero, who lived on the islands long before the arrival of the Spanish colonists. By the way, the very name of the islands – Canaries – is a reference to the Latin “canis”, which means “dog”. The territories were widely known in the ancient world precisely because of the dogs that the locals used as first helpers. nine0005

Throughout its history, the Dogo Canario managed to be a guard, a shepherd, and a fighter. By the way, representatives of the breed participated in battles until the 1940s, and it is not surprising: these strong, strong and muscular dogs had almost no equal. Today, the Dogo Canario can become an excellent companion and guard for a family and for a single person.

Despite the faulty reputation, the Dogo Canario has a calm and balanced temperament. As is the case with all fighting dogs, the main thing is education. Representatives of this breed must go through a general course of obedience and training, and their socialization must be started as early as possible. And it is recommended to do this with a professional dog handler. The Dogo Canario must understand that it is the owner who is the leader of the “pack”. nine0005

A well-bred dog is peaceful, it treats family members affectionately and is always ready to stand up for them. At the same time, aggression is not typical for the breed, which means that the Dogo Canario will never attack first. By the way, the breed is famous for its protective qualities. Indeed, these dogs are always on the alert, but at the same time, the pet will always be open to friends and acquaintances of the owner.

Dogo Canario is self-confident and therefore rarely comes into conflict with other animals in the house. He gets along well even with cats, especially if the puppy is younger and appeared in the house later. nine0005

Representatives of the breed are loyal to children and are ready to endure their antics.

Best holiday destination for you in Fuerteventura? + guide

    Table of Contents

    Beaches

Playa Esquizo is one of the prettiest white sandy beaches in Fuerteventura that is located close to the hotels. So if you are looking for a beach holiday in Fuerteventura, this might be one of the best options. However, this beach is left pretty much untouched except for some sunbeds and a beach bar. If you are looking for bars, restaurants or shops next to the beach, this beach has none. However, if you want to do some windsurfing or want to learn, you can do this on the beach.

    Best hotels in Esquinzo

Esquizo is all about size. Huge hotels with everything you want to do and experience offered inside the hotel. Most offer multiple pools, sports fields, all-day entertainment, many restaurants and much more.

Of all the hotels I have visited in this area, these I can advise:

    • Fuerteventura Princess: Great for families
    • Aluavillage Fuerteventura: One of the more budget-friendly options in this area.

    Things to do in Esquinzo

Esquinzo is mainly about the beach and hotels, so there is not much to do in the resort itself. There are some watersports you can learn or enjoy on the beach, but that is about it. However, from the hotels, there are also many organised excursions all over the island. These include visits to Betancuria, Ajuy caves and museums all over the island.

Here is my complete list of things to do in Fuerteventura.

    Restaurants, bars and nightlife

Esquinzo is all about the hotels. There are very few bars or restaurants here except for the few on the beach. Also, nightlife mostly takes place within the all-inclusive hotels with entertainment for the entire family; some even have small nightclubs.

    Fuerteventura airport to Esquinzo

Esquinzo is not located close to the airport of Fuerteventura. It is 78 km or over 1 hour of driving away. Because of this, it is best to arrive at the airport well prepared and preferably with pre-booked transportation.

    • Public transport to Esquinzo is possible, but many buses take many stops (sometimes over 30) and can take a long time to get there. If you want to do so, the price is 8.50 € per person.
    • A shuttle bus will get you there faster but needs to be booked before arriving, costing 19.43 €. It also has a lot of other benefits like a guaranteed place to sit on the bus.
    • Reserving a taxi online before arriving has a fixed price of 106.50 €. Taking a taxi from the airport has a starting price of 90 € and will be more expensive when in bad traffic, at the weekend or evening.

This is the company I used and advise for booking a taxi or shuttle online. For more information about public transport, you can have a look here.

Weather in Esquinzo & when to go

Esquinzo is a great place to visit any month of the year. The weather here is warm all year round, and since it is located in the South of the island, it gets less rain and cloudy days compared to the North. However, December might be a month you want to avoid if possible because of prices and that this is the rainiest month on the island. Yet, even so, rain is minimal in December, with only 3 rainy days.

Is Esquinzo the best holiday destination for you?

Esquinzo is all about the hotels and the beach. If you are most of the time in the hotel or on the beach during your holiday and don’t care about having a town nearby, this is great. Not only is the beach beautiful, but it is also close to the hotels. On top of that, the hotels here are massive and therefore offer many different restaurants, great entertainment, sports field and much more. If that sounds like what you would enjoy, then Esquinzo is the best holiday destination for you in Fuerteventura.

This resort in Fuerteventura is at least 1 hour away from the airport in Fuerteventura by taxi and much longer by bus or airport shuttle. So consider this before booking if you quickly get car sick or are travelling with small children and babies.

Not sure Esquinzo is right for you? Here is my complete guide to where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Aparthotel Esquinzo Y Monte Del Mar

    3. 75 – Rating Intui
    3.75 – Transport company rating

    Transfer advantages:
It was fair value for money

    Transfer disadvantages:
This was left at the time of booking, it was a 90 minute transfer when I actually did it was actually 2 hours. For the trip, it would be helpful to call the hotel where he is staying – the names can be hard to see and read late at night

    Taxi and Transfer from

Eskinso / Butiondo to Fuerteventura Airport

    (Spain (Canary Islands))
    5 – Intui rating
    5 – Transport company rating

    Transfer benefits:
Arrived on time, even 2 minutes early. Since the bus transfer collects passengers from the main resorts, it turns out to be a kind of excursion. The real time from Eskinzo (Fuerteventura) to the airport was about 2 hours, not 95 minutes as in the voucher. But they bring in advance, in my case for 2 hours, do not be late for the flight. nine0006

    Disadvantages of the transfer:
Call the office to specify the time and place of the transfer. If you do not speak English well, difficulties may arise. True, I had no problems with the operator, at my request, the oga spoke in understandable words and slowly. But it is better to be able to communicate either on WhatsApp or via e-mail.

    Transfer benefits:
Very cheap in relation to a taxi. Modern bus. nine0006

    Disadvantages of the transfer:
As with all transfers, a long trip. While dropping off 1-2 people along the way, it turns out to be a long time. And if you still don’t really know where your stop is, then you are always waiting.
