Christmas Eve in Tenerife usually begins with with early evening drinks with family and friends before returning home for a a traditional feast often comprising of prawns, roast lamb and typical Spanish sweets such as turrón, and polvorones. Presents aren’t exchanged on nochebuena so the children will have to wait for the gifts from the Three Kings on 6th January.

In many parts of Spain, bars an restaurants close early on Christmas Eve so that the staff can dine with their families. However, in popular holiday destinations such as Tenerife there will be plenty restaurants which remain open although pre-booking a table is recommended. Many hotels will have special banquests for guests on this evening.

Christmas Day in Tenerife

Christmas Day isn’t celebrated in the same way in Tenerife as it is in the UK and other western countries as it isn’t the day that children get their presents. And although many families might have a get together, Christmas dinner is not nearly as important as the meals on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

From the point of view of visitors to the island you can enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner at a number of bars and restaurants but advance booking is essential. Many hotels offer elaborate Christmas dinner as part of the booking over the festive period. If you want to get away from tradition you can simply enjoy some tapas in a Spanish bar or head down to the beach with a picnic and a bottle of cava.

Top 9 Things to Do at Christmas in Tenerife

Christmas in Tenerife can be a fun and festive time for the whole family. You can visit the Christmas markets and nativity scenes or enjoy some typical local activities such as taking a boat tour. Here are a few suggestions which are fun for all the family:

Shop at the Christmas Markets

Christmas markets are a popular tourist attraction in many freezing European cities so visiting Tenerife’s Christmas markets is quite a novelty. These markets sell seasonal food and drink, beautiful crafts and decorations, festive music, and maybe Santa himself will make an appearance. Some of the best Christmas markets are held in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, La Candelaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz.

Visit Christmas Nativity Scenes

There’s no better way to kick off the Christmas season than by visiting the nativity scene in Candelaria (Belén de Candelaria) which lies on the east coast, some 20km south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Other notable nativity scenes around the island can be found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and at La Orotava near Puerto de la Cruz on the north-central coast.

Attend Christmas Concerts

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra has a traditional Christmas concert that you can’t miss if you love classical music. Its best musicians meet in Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s harbour on Christmas Day for a musical event which has been taking place for the last 25 years. A number of other notable musical events take place over this period including the end of year classical music concert at the Auditorio Teobaldo Power in La Orotava on 30th December.

Go to the Beach on Christmas Day

Just for the pure novelty of it, there’s nothing like going to the beach on Christmas Day in Tenerife. With blue skies, a warm climate and mild sea temperatures there’s nothing like a festive dip in the sea. As a lot of restaurants close on Christmas Day in Spain, or are fully booked, many holidaymakers choose to take a picnic to the beach and celebrate in the sand. If you do want to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner you should book a restaurant well in advance or check out what packages your hotel is offering to guests over this period.

Drive up Mount Teide

If you’re looking for a great day out, take a festive drive up Mount Teide. This active volcano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. It can be reached by car from any part of the island and there are coach tours from all the main resorts. After parking the car there’s a cable car to the top from where you can take in magnificent vistas over the island. Another interesting option is to go to the Teide Observatory after dark and stargaze.

Take a Boat Trip

Another exciting activity over the Christmas period is to take a boat trip from your nearest port. These tours provide remarkable coastal scenery and if you’re lucky you might see some whales and dolphins. Activity boat tours may include snorkel or dive options whilst deep sea fishing trips can be arranged. There are departures from all over the island including the docks of Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Go to the Siam Park Waterpark

If you’re feeling a bit more active, then head to the outstanding Siam Park waterpark in Costa Adeje. This Thai-themed attraction is an excellent place to spend a day surrounded by slides and pools. There’s also a play area for young children and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Visit Loro Park Zoo

Loro Park Zoo in Puerto de la Cruz is a great place to spend a day out with the kids. It has an extensive collection of animals from all over the world, including tigers, lions, gorillas and elephants. There are also several play areas for children and a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Spanish Christmas food.

Play a Round of Golf

Most of Tenerife’s golf courses are on the south-west coast near Costa Adeje. The best ones which welcome non-members include Abama Golf Resort, Golf Costa Adeje, Buenavista Golf, Las Américas Golf Course and Golf del Sur. With the growing popularity of the Canary Islands as a golfing destination it’s strongly recommended that you pre-book your tee times before travelling.

What Happens at New Year in Tenerife?

New Year’s Eve in Tenerife (Noche Vieja)

Most of Tenerife’s main towns and holiday resorts will have programmes of New Year’s Eve parties and fireworks planned. Restaurants offer special end of year dinners and many hotels have special events planned. It is believed that successfully eating all the grapes on time will give you a year of luck and prosperity. After midnight people head for the pubs and clubs to enjoy a night of partying into the early hours.

New Year’s Day in Tenerife

New Year’s day is a public holiday which gives locals a chance to sleep off the excesses of the night before. For holidaymakers it’s business as usual in the resorts with bars and restaurants doing a roaring trade and many visitors enjoying a day on the beach or at one of the island’s many tourist attractions mentioned earlier.

The Three Kings (Día de los Reyes Magos)

The Reyes Magos arrive in Tenerife from the Orient on the evening of January 5th. They visit towns and villages all over the island in parades known as the Cabalgata de Reyes. From their elaborately decorated floats they throw sweets to all the children along the route and listen to the youngsters’s requests for presents.

The children receive their gifts that evening or the next morning (just in time to go back to school!). Some of the largest parades on the island are held in Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos, and Adeje Town. Spanish families typically et together this lunchtime for a large meal followed by typical festive dessert called a Roscón de Reyes.

Christmas and New Year in Los Cristianos Tenerife

By C0rnw@11Latest News, Tenerife Info, Things to Do

Are you in Tenerife for Christmas or New Year this year? Are you thinking of going next year?  It is a great place to be with lots of sunshine and traditional celebrations. Christmas and New Year in Los Cristianos, Tenerife is a magical time for couples and families alike.

You can be on the beach (with average daytime temperatures of 22°C) in the morning and playing in the snow up Mount Teide in the afternoon, so you don’t have to miss the snow & cold!  With sunset at 6pm  the longer days will keep you smiling.

Christmas Traditions

One Spanish tradition at Christmas is the Belén (Nativity scenes) which are in most towns. Some are quite large and even have a mini village. Try to see if you can find some while on holiday.  Our children loved looking at all the characters.

In the supermarkets, at this time of year, you will find lots of different types of turrón. It’s is a traditional sweet eaten at Christmas time, made of honey, eggs, and almonds.

The Spanish families don’t celebrate Christmas Day like we do (however it is still a bank holiday). Christmas Eve is very important as families gather together at their homes in the evening to have a big family meal then go to La Misa Del Gallo (Midnight Mass).

They don’t celebrate Boxing Day, so all the shops will be open as normal.  However, watch out for 28th December El Día de Los Santos Inocentes (Holy Innocents Day) which is a bit like our April’s fools day!

Spanish children have to wait until Los Reyes Magos (the 3 kings) arrive to get their presents.   The Cabalgata (parade) happens on the evening of 5th January through Los Cristianos, where Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar throw sweets out to the children.  They then receive the gifts on the morning of the 6th January.

New Year’s Eve in Los Cristianos

New Year’s Eve is a big, family-friendly, celebration with live music, dancing and partying in the streets. The main action is normally around the cultural centre or church square in Los Cristianos.  The tradition is to eat 12 green grapes, one at each stroke of midnight, to bring luck for each of the following 12 months.  And if you want to find love next year – wear red underwear!

At midnight there will be lots of fireworks from all different places, we always found the best place to see them all from was the beach in Los Cristianos.  From there you can see many displays going on around town.  They are amazing!

The sales in Tenerife don’t start until 7th January after their celebrations have finished on 6th so don’t get too excited on boxing day.

Mundomar Theme Park Benidorm Spain

Guide to the theme park of Mundomar in Benidorm on Spain’s Costa Blanca.

Mundomar is the Spanish version of Sea-World located in Benidorm on Spain’s northern Costa Blanca.

Going to theme parks has become a popular way to spend your vacations.

To make Benidorm your next holiday destination there are three international airports that you can book your flights to like Valencia, Murcia and Alicante, all within a ninety minute car drive.

Mundomar is located right in the heart of Benidorm and can be seen from far away. A landmark to look out for are the waterslides of the park next door that is Mundomar.

There are buses available from downtown Benidorm to take you to Mundomar or you can go by car. Parking is free unlike at Terra Mitica or Terra Natura.

Benidorm has a Mediterranean climate meaning hot summers with no rain making a day at Mundomar an ideal way to spend a day of your vacation.

The park is not open all year round.

Table of Contents

Attractions, Rides and Shows

There are three very popular shows not to be missed. Mundomar Dancing with dolphins is a forty minute show, the sea-lions a thirty minute show and the twenty minute parrot show. There is also the new giant aquarium which is new to the park and is open every day all day.

Mundomar also arranges fantastic birthday parties for children, so book your party now by telephoning 965 860 100. Mundomar is an interesting fun and educational place to visit making it an exciting excursion for the local children at Spanish schools.

There are also an array of exotic birds like swans, flamingos, ducks and pelicans and other aquatic birds waiting to be admired. New this year is also Kira the sea lion who was born and bred in Mundomar. Also check out the new additions to the park like the meerkats, lemurs and owls and squirrel monkeys.

The Mundomar Dancing with dolphins is an experience the children will never forget consisting of synchronised swimmers doing water ballet in perfect unity with the dolphins.

As you enter the park you will walk over bridges across the lagoons admiring the flamingos and other aquatic birds, next you can admire the turtles and learn about their habitat. There is also an aviary with parrots, cockatoos and many other birds some of us are lucky enough to have as pets at home.

Mundomar wouldn’t have a complete collection of birds unless they had penguins which of course they do, here again we can admire these hardy birds and learn all about their habitat. You can admire the dolphins in their natural habitat from the safety of your perch in the old Spanish galleon.

EATING AT MUNDOMAR

There is also a special play area for children with many activities like climbing walls, slides and swings. There are restaurants and kiosks scattered about the park, but the cafeteria is renowned for its excellent cuisine and value for money.

Teenager Determined To End The Captivity Of Dolphins In Spain

Environment

08/07/2022

Valencia News

A 15-year-old girl is determined to eradicate the captivity of dolphins in Spain. She has launched a public awareness campaign that may cause a stir..

Nearly 120,000 people are backing a petition, set up by 15-year-old Olivia Mandle, that calls for the Spanish government to end the captivity of dolphins in Spain and shut down dolphinariums.

Spain has the most dolphinariums in the EU, with 11 parks showcasing captive cetaceans. One of the most infamous is Loro Parque, in Tenerife, was recently featured in Blackfish, a Netflix documentary that focused on US marine park Seaworld and the dangers and ethics of keeping orcas in captivity. And another one, Oceanografic, in Valencia, is probably the biggest place in Europe where dolphins are kept captive.

Like orcas, dolphins need a lot of space to swim around. In the wild, they can swim up to 80 miles a day. But in captivity, on average, they have around 200,000 times less space, says World Animal Protection.

This means they cannot engage in their natural behaviors. And as a result, they can get bored, aggressive, and even self-harm.

In the petition, Mandle writes:

Aquapolis, the water park in Tarragona, had 9 captive dolphins for years and although this weekend it has decided to close its dolphinarium, once again they have treated these living beings as mere objects of economic interest.

And they fly them (it must be very nice for them) to another aquarium in China.

But they say they had to find a place to ensure the welfare of these animals.

SHAMEFUL LIE AND HUMAN AGGRESS.

What terrible legal gaps exist so that this “transaction” could have been carried out.

These animals need to be transferred to a marine sanctuary and try to give them an opportunity so that, even if it is little, they can taste something as close as possible to what their life could and should have been.

Let’s stop doing business with these or any animals.

For a Law Prohibiting Dolphinariums and shows in this country, sign my campaign:  #noespaisparadelfines @change_es

Spain is the largest dolphin prison in Europe and the 6th in the world.
Let’s stop this billionaire business.”

Mandle also refers to Barcelona’s decision in 2018 to become a dolphin captivity-free city. It was a start. But as the teen notes, the animals that lived there have simply been moved to another dolphinarium in a different country. She is calling for Spain to set an example and ban the captivity of dolphins in Spain once for all.

“It is not normal to lock these animals in small pools day and night for the rest of their lives,” Mandle writes.

The UK, Chile, India, Costa Rica, Norway, and Brazil are among the countries that have already banned dolphin captivity.

In 2020, the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots program recognized Mandle as a “mini-heroine.” The young activist set up the dolphinarium petition when she was 13, but it is still gaining significant traction.

In the country that can still not agree should the bullfights be banned, this is a big ask. Also, if we look at the Oceanografic in Valencia, it must be noted that this is the biggest tourist attraction in the city (together with the City of Arts and Sciences), so it is very hard to imagine that eventual decision to ban the captivity of dolphins in Spain, would have any support from the local government.

Where to swim with dolphins in Spain

dolphins they are beautiful and super smart. These are marine mammals, cetaceans and there are 34 species . Did you know? I love them, but I think they are animals and should be left alone, so I don’t quite understand the desire of tourists for people to interact with them …

But then the question is, Can you swim with dolphins in Spain ? ? Basically, is not. Environmental groups assured this, but still there are several places where you can somehow see them up close. Let’s find out a little more about the subject.

As we have already said, swimming with dolphins is quite difficult in Spain because is prohibited . However, there are a few places where yes there is a dolphin show and even if it is, you can be close by, such as Madrid Zoo or Barcelona Zoo.

To interact more with them, you must upgrade to Benidorm in Mundomar , Acqui Seno one of the best dolphinariums in Europe not only with dolphins but also other marine animals such as turtles, sea lions, otters, flamingos… There are 80 species in total and this is also the place where you can practice dolphin therapy.

Mundomar offers half-hour encounters with dolphins, always in the presence of caretakers or trainers who teach the public the most interesting aspects of the life of these fabulous animals. Going with the kids is a great plan . The moment lasts 30 minutes and includes a meeting with the animals, two photos that will forever remember the contact, a gift towel, a backpack and a small bottle of mineral water.

Here It is advisable to book in advance. , within at least a week, via the online store or by sending an email to [email protected] with the name, surname, mobile phone number, number of children and adults and the time of interest (which can be at 12 or 16 hours).

You can also call by phone, all information on the site. That yes you need to be able to swim and not have mental disabilities, not be pregnant and if you are a child, you are from 5 to 12 years old and you cannot swim, you must be accompanied by an adult. This activity takes place from March to December, every day , and the price is 80 euros per adult and 55 euros per child.

Another place in Spain where you can meet dolphins is Catalonia – Aquopolis. This place is on the Costa Dorada, in La Pineda, not far from Salou, and it is a beautiful place. water park . You interact with the dolphins through a tour with a educational conversation and a small interaction that allows you to touch the animals, always under the watchful eye of the keepers.

Obviously you can take pictures. Today the price is 74 euros per adult and child. Children must be at least seven years old and be at least 1.15 meters tall. Persons between the ages of 7 and 10 must be accompanied by an adult who is also participating in the meeting.

en la
Valencia you can also meet dolphins. Where? In Oceanography in Valencia and with an Animalia passport. You will not only be able to meet dolphins but also sea lions and learn all about the life of these fantastic animals. And you will take a photo for memory. What is the fee for this event? EUR 44.70 per adult and EUR 37 per child.

To see the Valencia dolphins, children must be at least six years old, and if they are between six and twelve years old, they must also be accompanied by an adult. The interesting thing here is that if you are interested in the work of guardians, you can become one of them for a day. Yes, You can be a trainer for a day and find out how they take care of the animals. Extra: the opportunity to sleep with sharks is offered even for 90 euros.

El The Selwo Marina is located in Malaga , in the municipality of Benalmadena. Here in the dolphinarium there is an underwater track, semi-submerged, so that you can take a closer look at the animals. The games are organized, you can take pictures and touch the dolphins. when these actions are completed. The bet per child is 39euros, and for an adult – 74 euros, depending on the season.

The minimum age for children to enjoy this experience in Malaga is 5 years old and yes, if they are between 5 and 7 years old, they must be in the arms of an adult. They also cannot be less than 1.25 meters in height, and if so, also in the presence of an adult next to them.

These are the places where you can interact with dolphins in Spain. Please note that I am not talking about swimming because, as we said at the beginning, this activity is prohibited in the country. It’s about interaction, closeness, touching them and not much else. .

Outside of Spain, although close, there is still a little more to do. in Portugal, in Zoomarina. Here yes, you can swim Well, you can get into a huge lagoon surrounded by plants and white sand. It’s more expensive, but worth it: 125 euros depending on the season.

But isn’t there another place in Spain? Well, you can go to the Atlantic coast and sign up for a tour that will allow you to see them in their natural habitat. Yes indeed. There are tours of this type. in the Canary Islands for example, but it is still forbidden to swim with each other.

Actually, I think it’s ideal not to swim with dolphins. Keeping animals deprived of their liberty seems to me a horror very typical of the 19th century, doesn’t it? What is the need to maintain such places today if you can travel or watch them on TV or the Internet? Yes, I know swimming with dolphins must be a wonderful and truly unforgettable experience, but should these animals be disturbed, disturbed in boats filled with tourists, or locked in dolphinariums for people to touch and photograph?

If this activity interests you anyway, my advice is: look to dive or swim among the dolphins in the wild . Doing this with free animals is wonderful and very different from interacting with animals indoors, as it only encourages hunting.
