Getting to the Port of Tenerife

Cruise Terminal Tenerife is located in the island’s capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Let DIY Excursion show you the way.

Which Airport To Fly To?

Tenerife Norte (TFN) is only 15km away compared to Tenerife Sur (TFS) which is 62km away from the Tenerife cruise port. So any savings made from a flight into the TFS may be less than the cost of your onward journey to the Tenerife cruise terminal.

TIP: Compare both airports at the same time by selecting either Tenerife (Any) or TCI in your flight search.

Tenerife Cruise Terminal

The Tenerife cruise port address is Av. Francisco la Roche, 29, 38001 Santa Cruz de Tenerife. See it on the map.

Get to the Tenerife cruise port via ?

  • Cruise Shuttle
  • Hotel Shuttle
  • Taxi
  • Ride share
  • Private Airport Shuttle
  • Rental car
  • Train
  • Public bus
  • Walking

Cruise Shuttle

Some cruise companies include an airport transfer to the Port of Tenerife in the booking price making this the first item you should check. Most cruise companies will only offer you a paid shuttle service which can be booked direct with them or your Travel agent.

Whichever airport you arrive at the Cruise shuttle is cheaper than a taxi (based on 2 sharing) and we understand that being met by cruise company rep is exciting. You’ll have your luggage taken from you as you board the coach knowing it will reappear outside your cruise cabin later in the day. This slightly speeds up your embarkation process and of all port arrival methods is considered the best way by many.

We here at DIY Excursion strongly disagree. Firstly the price is per person, so unless you are a lone traveler this is never a cheap option. Frustratingly the shuttle will not leave until everybody is accounted for so you may find you are waiting a long time for fellow travelers to arrive on different planes.

The biggest downfall with a cruise operated shuttle is that they only operate on cruise days and with a destination like Tenerife not to spend a few extra days pre- or post- cruise would be a missed opportunity. See things to see and do in Tenerife.

Hotel Shuttle

Many cruisers arrive before the day of sailing. Some are forced due to flight schedules, whilst others wish to experience Tenerife more fully and get in some extra DIY Excursions before they cruise. Either way accommodation is needed and most will opt for a hotel as close to the Tenerife cruise port as possible, somewhat limiting their choice.

TIP: Choose a hotel that offers a local area shuttle bus service. This can be used for the Cruise Terminal Tenerife, the bus station, the airport , some will even take you to the beach. Granted a small charge may be applied but you get to choose from a wider range of hotels.

Taxi

Always available at the airport with drivers willing to help you with your luggage. Unlike a shuttle the taxi can leave as soon as you are ready and head straight for the Tenerife Cruise terminal. A taxi from Tenerife Norte (TFN) is between €15-€20 and from the Tenerife Sur (TFS) €70-€90 depending on time of day, amount of luggage etc.., though this price is per car (not per person).

Be aware that most taxis don’t accept credit cards. Taxi drivers don’t expect big tips (they get paid rather well) but are often rather hesitant to give you your change as the rounding up method of tipping is often applied. The cost isn’t a bad deal for a family of 4 but there are (in DIY Excursion’s opinion) better options. Need a taxi to or from some where else?

Ride Share

Sadly there are no Ride share companies allowed to operate in Tenerife , for now.

Private Airport Shuttle

For large groups or for those who just want to start their Canary island cruise from Tenerife in style. A smart looking chauffeur will meet you at the airport and drive you (and only your group) directly to the Cruise terminal Tenerife in a fancy car, without stops or detours.

DIY Excursion’s favourite ShuttleDirect has chauffeurs that track your flight and will be aware of any delays ensuring they are there when you need them the most.

TIP: If you are flying in and out of the same airport ensure you enter “Round trip” into search box to get a return journey discount.

Free quote available by clicking either the Tenerife Norte (TFN) or Tenerife Sur (TFS) link.

Tenerife Norte (TFN) airport (click below).

Tenerife Sur (TFS) airport (click below).

Rental Car

Hiring a car to drive from the airport to the Cruise Terminal Tenerife is not a great idea no matter how many people there are in your group. The daily car rental charge isn’t particular high but the charges for not returning the vehicle to its original Pick up point will make the Car hire option expensive and the Private car hire more cost effective.

Train

Tenerife has a Tram system called the Metro Tenerife that operates within the capital Santa Cruz and the old capital La Laguna.

Tenerife Tram (Line 1) running between the new and old capital.

This mode of transport is unlikely to help you as a way of getting to the Port of Tenerife. Some might argue to you could jump on the tram at Santa Cruz bus station (“Intercambiador”) and travel one stop to “Fundacion” which gets you slightly closer to the Plaza de España to pick up

the free Port Authority bus. DIY Excursion thoughts are that this is an unnecessary step causing more confusion to an already stressful day.

Having said that using the Metro Tenerife for your DIY Excursion may well be the only transport you use that day. See Transport Options in Tenerife.

Public Bus

From Tenerife North Airport (TFN) a 20 minute journey by “Titsa” green bus (no.20) leaves approx every 30minutes and will take you to the Santa Cruz main bus station (Intercambiador Sta.Cruz) costing €2.65.

From Tenerife South Airport (TFS) a 50 minute journey by “Titsa” green bus (no. 111) leaves approx every 30 minutes and will take you to the Santa Cruz main bus station (Intercambiador Sta.Cruz) costing €9.35.

At the Santa Cruz main bus station (Intercambiador Sta.Cruz) you can jump on one of many connecting buses that pass by the Plaza de España just a couple of minutes away or take a 12 minute walk. From here you can board a Port of Tenerife authority free shuttle bus that takes you directly to the Tenerife cruise terminal.

Click to see the full “Titsa” timetable and cost calculator in English

Walking

With the Tenerife cruise terminal being so close to the city, walking to the cruise ship from your overnight hotel is possible. For those coming in via public bus the final walk from Santa cruz bus station its about a 25 minute long, though with luggage you should allow an extra 10 minutes

TIP: Instead of walking directly to the Tenerife port consider walking to the Plaza de España and board a Port of Tenerife authority free shuttle bus. This could shorten the walking time by 15 minutes.

ferry

Nearly every Canarian island has a ferry connecting it to all the others, some also connect to the Spanish mainland. Both the Tenerife cruise port and the Ferry port share the same natural harbour at Santa Cruz de Tenerife making it possible to start or finish your cruise from Tenerife by ferry. As a foot passenger with all that cruise luggage this could be a bit of an ordeal though.

TIP: It is possible to hire a car from the cruise terminal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and drop it off at an Airport on a different Canarian island.

Bookings for any ferry crossing starting from the Port of Tenerife can be made here.

Where do cruise ships dock in Tenerife?

Tenerife has only one cruise terminal and only the one (albeit long) pier and yet it’s still the second busiest dock in Spain after Barcelona.

What cruise ships go to Tenerife? What cruise company should I book with?

The cruise company to choose is basically dependent on 4 considerations, your budget, required level of luxury, onboard facilities and offshore itineraries. How you prioritize these factors is your first decision. Still not sure?

Which airport is closest to the Tenerife cruise port?

Tenerife Norte (TFN) is only 15km away compared to Tenerife Sur (TFS) which is 62km away from the Tenerife cruise port. So any savings made from a flight into the TFS may be less than the cost of your onward journey to the Tenerife cruise terminal. You can compare both airports at the same time by typing TCI or selecting Tenerife All. See them both on the map.

Do the cruise ship companies in Tenerife pick you up from the airport?

Some cruise companies include an airport transfer to the Port of Tenerife in the booking price making this the first item you should check. If your cruise price included the flight then usually the transfer is also included. Most cruise companies will only offer you a paid shuttle service which can be booked direct with them or your Travel agent, though there is a better way.

How much is a taxi from Tenerife airport to the Tenerife Cruise terminal?

Always available at the airport with drivers willing to help you with your luggage. Unlike a shuttle the taxi can leave as soon as you are ready and head straight for the Tenerife Cruise terminal. A taxi from Tenerife Norte (TFN) is between €15-€20 and from the Tenerife Sur (TFS) €70-€90 depending on time of day, amount of luggage etc.., though this price is per car (not per person). Though there are some things you should be aware of.

Can i get an Uber in Tenerife?

You can get an Uber Eat but you cannot get a Uber or any type of rideshare in Tenerife, at least not yet.

Do Tenerife hotels have cruise terminal shuttle buses?

Not really though there are a few that offer a local area shuttle bus which can include the Tenerife cruise port. We have picked a few favourites.

Can I get a private car to take me from Tenerife airport to the Tenerife cruise terminal?

For large groups or for those who just want to start their Canary island cruise from Tenerife in style. A smart looking chauffeur will meet you at the airport and drive you (and only your group) directly to the Cruise terminal Tenerife in a fancy car, without stops or detours. We have our favourite listed.

Can I get a public bus from Tenerife airport to the Tenerife cruise terminal?

Not quite, from either Tenerife airport but you can get a public bus to Santa Cruz de Tenerife bus station, from there you have several options on how to reach the Tenerife cruise terminal.

Can I walk to the Tenerife cruise terminal from the Santa cruz bus station.

Yes it is possible though I am not sure you would want to with all that luggage. If you are insistent on walking we suggest you head for the Plaza de España and get the free Port bus. We can show how.

The same port where cruise ships dock today has been integral to the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for centuries. Indeed, this colorful port of call – which boasts museums and beaches alike – has always relied heavily on its proximity to the sea for its livelihood. With a popular that exceeds 220,000 people, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hardly a quiet, out of the way place. However, it’s the city’s vibrant atmosphere and welcoming locals that help give it so much of its charm. Indeed, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the best places to find yourself on this chain of volcanic islands.

Sightseeing & Things To Do

Viewing the impressive Mount Teide – which rises a majestic 12,402 feet above Santa Cruz – from the cruise ship simply doesn’t do it justice. In fact, the only way to really get a feel for the stunning nature of the topography of Tenerife is by getting off the cruise ship and exploring. Whether you want to learn a bit about the history of the Canary Islands – or if you just want to nosh on some delicious local cuisine – Santa Cruz de Tenerife will not disappoint.

Whether your ship ends up docking close or far from all of the action, you absolutely must get off it and explore Santa Cruz de Tenerife a little bit. There are many splendid options, including:

Plaza de Espana

History buffs – and those who would simply like to learn a bit more about the culture and story behind the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Santa Cruz – should high tail it over to the Plaza de Espana. This old section of the town features a conveniently compact selection of great museums and old buildings.

Loro Parque

If you’d like to get a bit of fresh air while taking in a pleasant mix of different attractions, visit the Loro Parque. Marvel at the huge population of parrots that help make this wildlife park famous or check out some sea lions, dolphins or other kinds of marine life. Loro Parque is a fabulous way to introduce yourself to the wildlife of this gorgeous region.

San Cristobal de la Laguna

The oldest town on Tenerife – and its original capital – is located only five minutes away from Santa Cruz. San Cristobal de la Laguna is by far the most picturesque, quaint town to explore on the island.

Museo Militar de Almeyda

As peaceful and serene as Santa Cruz de Tenerife may be today, it has a long, bloody military history. Learn a little bit about it by stopping in at this compelling military history museum.

Shopping

You’ll have little trouble finding touristy shops in which to purchase a bevy of souvenirs while visiting Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Why not experience the other side of shopping in this scenic town by hitting its local market? This is where the locals trade their goods and wares; you’re not going to find kitschy tourist things, but you will be able to sample a lot of different fresh local produce and see how people on this remarkable island live their lives. The people watching here is nearly as much fun as the shopping!

Best Souvenir To Bring Back To the Cruise Ship

The name of the game in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is definitely silver. It is plentiful and very reasonably priced all over town; you’ll be certain to track down a piece of silver jewelry that you will cherish for years. No real treasure hunting is involved, happily, because silver is so incredibly abundant on Tenerife.

Eating – Sample the Local Cuisine

The cuisine of the Canary Islands is absolutely delectable, so be sure to hit a few of the local restaurants and food stands to try a bit of it out. One of the especially delicious local favorites is called Rancho Canaria, which is a vegetable and meat soup that is as savory as it is filling. Or try out the Cazuela Canaria, a kind of fish stew that is well loved among locals and visitors alike. You definitely won’t be wanting for tasty things to eat when you visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

When, Where, and How

When To Go

While the Canary Islands enjoy some pretty fantastic weather all year long, if you have a choice in the matter you should try to visit sometime between November and February. It is not excessively hot or humid during those months, and it tends to be a lot drier, too. You’ll find that being outdoors during those months is very pleasant, indeed.

Where You’re Docked

Cruise ships that arrive in Tenerife dock at its large, U-shaped harbor. The only problem that may arise occurs when a ship has to pull in at the farthest end of the U. In that case, passengers have to trek quite a ways to get over to the main sights of Santa Cruz. However, the walk is well worth it – and shuttles are often available, too.

Which Cruise Ships Go Here?

A lot of the most popular cruise lines have itineraries that feature stops at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A couple examples of the major cruise lines that stop in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are P & O Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Fred Olsen Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Cunard. However, there are many other choices in terms of dates, ships, days in port and at sea when it comes to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The Viking Sky cruise liner, which was in distress off the coast of Norway, arrived under its own power, accompanied by tug boats, to the port of the city Molde. About a third of the passengers who were on it were previously evacuated from the ship by helicopters.

Viking Sky entered the Norwegian port at about 4:15 local time (6:15 Moscow time). The passengers who were on it were taken to a local hotel, where a first aid center was opened.

Engines failed

Earlier on Sunday it was reported that the ship’s crew managed to start the engines and head for Molda.

And the day before, the Norwegian authorities announced that the engines on the Viking Sky ship had failed, after which it was decided to evacuate the passengers.

Five helicopters and several ships were involved in the evacuation. In total, there were 1373 people on board the ship, including crew members and passengers. Almost 500 of them were transported ashore.

The cargo ship “Hagland Captain”, which participated in the rescue operation, also had engines out of order, after which it was decided to send two helicopters to it to evacuate the crew.

Norwegian rescue services reported that the ship had issued a distress signal in rough seas and strong winds around 1400 local time on Saturday.

The Viking Sky was on a regular flight from Tromsø to Stavanger. Hustadvika – the area where the accident occurred – is considered one of the most dangerous on the coast of Norway.

According to the Russian embassy in Norway, there are no Russian citizens among the passengers, but there are four Russians among the crew members.

Passenger stories

“We were having lunch when [the liner] started shaking. Glass flew out of the windows, water poured in. I would rather forget flying in a helicopter,” John Curry, who was evacuated from the liner, told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK by helicopter.

“The sea was very rough at night. There was a continuous wave. Then we went to have breakfast, after which we were going to the cinema hall for the afternoon, when suddenly the lights went out,” said Derek Brown, from southern England. He was on board the ship with his wife Esther.

“We were taken by helicopter to the shore, it was very scary.

Another evacuee, Janet Jacob, told NRK that she had “never seen anything so frightening”.

“I began to pray. I prayed for the safety of everyone on board,” she said. “The helicopter flight was terrifying.”

The captain of the fishing schooner, Jan Erik Fiskrestrand, one of the first to come to the aid of the liner, told Aftenposten: “A few more minutes and everything could have worked out much worse. If they hadn’t started the engine and dropped anchor, the ship could have landed on the rocks.”

The liner was only 2.5 nautical miles (less than five kilometers) from the coast. But the rescuers said that he was anchored and, accordingly, he was not threatened with a collision with the shore.

The Viking Sky was on a routine flight from Tromso to Stavanger waves – 10 meters. According to the local press, because of this, rescue ships could not moor to the board of the liner in distress, and the evacuation was carried out only by helicopters.

17 people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

According to NRK, the majority of the liner’s passengers are British and American.

Things to do in salou in june: 15 Best Things to Do in Salou (Spain)

15 Best Things to Do in Salou (Spain)

Salou is the big resort on southern Catalonia’s Costa Daurada (Golden Coast). For families in need of sun and sand it ticks all the right boxes. All along the coast are broad resort beaches or hidden little coves, and the amenities, attractions and infrastructure are up there with anything Spain has to offer.

Spain’s top theme park, PortAventura is right next door, and with it come golf courses and a world-class water park. And if you need a change of pace, the UNESCO-listed history and culture of Tarragona is just ten minutes by train from Salou.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Salou:

    1. PortAventura World

    Source: portaventuraeventsPortAventura World

Spain’s most-visited theme park also ranks in Europe’s top ten. It’s a day-out that everyone in the family can get excited about.

The littlest guys and girls will love the well -choreographed shows, playgrounds, amusements and the new SésamoAventura, a Sesame Street area. Bigger kids and grown-ups can look forward to a set of record-breaking white-knuckle roller coasters.

New features seem to crop up every year, across the park’s five themes areas: Far West, Mediterrània , México, China and Polynesia. If you’re really into thrill rides the Hurakan Condor is a drop tower, 100 metres in height and visible for miles around.

    2. Llevant Beach

    Source: visitsalouLlevant Beach

Right in front of the town is Salou’s main beach, where you’ll spend easy summer days relaxing in the sun.

With a wide belt of fine golden sand, it runs along the waterfront for just over a kilometre and its convenience to the hotels and apartments in the resort make it the family choice.

There’s much more to keep kids occupied of course, with play areas at stages along the beach. The surf here is moderate, with currents partly shielded by the Cap de Salou headland to the east.

    3. Salou’s fountains

    Source: flickrSalou’s fountains

It all started with the Font Lluminosa, which was built in 1973 by Carles Buigas, the same man responsible for Barcelona world-famous fountain in Montjuïc. From Easter to the month of November there’s a light and sound show after sunset.

The whole spectacle is synchronised to music as 100 jets propel water in a dazzling array of combinations. In recent years the Cybernetic Fountain has been added, and it’s even more intricate.

This one has a thousand jets, and even creates a water labyrinth in the middle that you have to try to negotiate.

    4. Avenida Jaume I

    Source: salouturismoAvenida Jaume I

On the rim of Playa de Llevant is this broad marble-paved promenade. For locals and tourists alike it’s a place to see and be seen, in the liveliest part of the resort.

On the upper side are Salou’s best shops, bars and restaurants over which climb the hallmark apartment towers of a Mediterranean resort.

The promenade is fringed on both sides by palm trees and there’s a monument to James I the Conqueror. This 13th-century king is a Catalan national icon, credited with reclaiming the county of Barcelona from the French and taking back cities from the Moors.

    5. Portaventura Caribe Aquatic Park

    Source: youtubePortaventura Caribe Aquatic Park

Like Portaventura’s theme park, this water attraction is a cut above the usual water park on the Mediterranean. Across 34,000 square metres landscaped with palms and tropical undergrowth are pools, high-speed plunges and slides.

The littlest members of the family can make waves at the Zona Indoor, with shallow pools and safe obstacles that they can clamber over. Bigger kids and grownups in need of a rush can hit the King Khajuna, which drops you from 31 metres at a 55° angle.

    6. Coves of Cap de Salou

    Source: visitsalouCala els Crancs

If resort beaches aren’t your thing you won’t have to travel far to discover some enticing little beaches just around the headland to the east.

There are five in total: Cala de la Vinya, Cala els Crancs, Cala Morisca, Cala de la Font and Cala de la Penya Tallada, and all can be reached by car, or on foot if you’re feeling brave.

Development on the cape is minimal, and these coves are traced by little more than craggy limestone spurs and aromatic Aleppo pine trees.

    7. Capellans Beach

    Source: flickrCapellans Beach

Between the cape and Llevant Beach is a happy medium: This gorgeous little beach is in the quieter part of the resort, wedged between two promontories.

The waters are calmer and shallower than at Llevant Beach, so it’s a better option if you’re visiting with less able swimmers.

Despite not being the longest beach in the area, Capellans has quite a wide swathe of sand, so even when it gets really busy in summer it won’t feel quite as packed as Llevant next door.

    8. Eating out

    Source: flickrPaella

About 50 kilometres south of Salou are the vast rice fields at the Delta of the River Ebro, so rice has long been a big part of the local diet.

That famous Spanish dish paella originated just beyond the delta in Valencia. And as with many coastal resorts in the region paella is offered by a lot of restaurants. Ask around  and check reviews to avoid the tourist traps.

In case you need reminding, paella is a delicious medley of shellfish and squid simmered with saffron-infused rice. Arròs negre is perhaps a bit more Catalan: It’s a similar preparation to paella, only with cuttlefish or squid, and dyed black with squid ink.

    9. Roman Tarragona

    Source: flickrTarragona

One of the foremost cities of the western Roman empire is just 10 minutes away by train. Tarraco was the first major Roman settlement and the capital of Tarrconensis, which covered most of modern Spain.

As you’d expect, this has left Tarragona with a staggering wealth of Roman buildings and fortifications. Down by the water is the amphitheatre, and a little way up the hill is the provincial forum, dominated by the Pretorian tower.

There’s also a comprehensive museum full of artefacts on this site. Just outside the city you can see Tarraco’s marvellous aqueduct, a funerary tower, Roman quarry and a triumphal arch.

    10. Tarragona Walls and Part Alta

    Source: flickrTarragona Walls

The walls of Tarragona was one of the famed Roman general  Scipio’s first projects after he landed on the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC. Tarragona was a base of Roman operations for the Punic War.

The walls have of course evolved over the last 22 centuries, but the lower sections of the fortifications is clearly Roman, as you’ll see at the medieval Torre de l’Arquebisbe.

The walls surround the highest part of Tarragona (Part Alta), and within is a beautiful, steeply graded web of streets where the best restaurants are found.

There are little hints of Tarragona’s Roman past all around, with some buildings supported by original Roman walls.

    11. Tarragona Cathedral

    Source: flickrTarragona Cathedral

At the crest of the hill is the city’s exquisite gothic cathedral. This lofty setting has been significant for thousands of years: There was a Roman temple here from the reign of Emperor Tiberius, which was only discovered in the foundations at the turn of the 21st Century.

The Moors also had their mosque where the cathedral now stands. Inside you can make your way around the 19 chapels, in the gothic, renaissance and baroque styles.

Be sure to enter the cloister, an oasis of serenity in the middle of the city, with gothic arcades and a fountains in the centre. On the eastern side there’s a small Arab inscription from the 10th century, dating to the time this was a mosque.

    12. Castells

    Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/calafellvalo/15263300327/in/photolist-pfLpqt-8G4PoY-8G4UTw-8G1K5P-8G1Fuc-8G1Ccx-diaKWD-8G4SSj-8G4Uz1-diaJrN-diaLqp-5rCgGn-5rGCaY-8G4V9w-5rCgr4-diaLki-diaL2B-pPjdAG-8G1CQP-5rChxg-8G4TnA-8G4We1-5rGy5Q-diaJpJ-5rGB9N-diaLbk-pxfDYc-pxfFui-5rCfV6-diaJEG-5rGyHS-5rCh5n-5rCcPB-pfLduS-p9whTN-5rGzg9-5rGzTq-diaJbj-oSondL-5rGzyJ-dRrkri-5rCdjH-diaL7F-pxdQnu-5rGxh7-5rCePx-pfAhHH-8G1H5e-dVQFe7-dVQFisConcurs de Castells

Every other year the Concurs de Castells takes place in early-October in Tarragona’s Plaza de Toros. You’ve never seen a spectacle quite like it: Teams (colles) gather from around Catalonia to compete by forming human towers.

The makeup of a tower begins with a large crowd of sturdy men and women at the bottom, and then as you go up the pillar the participants get younger. Often the person at the top of a Castell, nine storeys off the ground, can be a child of six or seven, wearing a riding helmet in case of a collapse of course.

If you’re not around during the big competition there are plenty of exhibitions at any time of year, but especially during festivals, all to the reedy sound of a gralla (a kind of medieval clarinet).

    13. Golf

Source: magnoliahotelsalouMediterránea Beach Club & Golf Community

For many, a holiday on Spain’s Mediterranean coast just wouldn’t be complete without a round of golf. With two clubs within ten minutes, Salou hits the spot.

On the cape to the east of the resort is Mediterránea Beach Club & Golf Community. There are 45 holes of golf to get stuck into here, with three different courses designed by Greg Norman amid olive groves and pines. Low-handicappers should test their mettle on the challenging Lumine Hills.

Club de Golf Reus Aigüesverds is also a good choice. Kids and beginners can learn the basics at the pitch & putt, while seasoned players can tackle the 18-hole par-71 course.

    14. Reus

    Source: flickrReus, Spain

This is a prosperous business town less than 15 minutes inland from Salou. Reus really took shape at the turn of the century, which has left it with lots of beautiful Catalan modernist architecture.

Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus, and although he didn’t contribute any buildings, many of his contemporaries did. There’s also a great museum devoted to Reus’ most famous son, showing off some of his possessions and sketches.

At the tourism office you can also get details of the Ruta del Modernisme, leading you to the best modernist buildings in the city. One of the loveliest is Casa Navàs, built by Lluís Domènech i Montaner,  also responsible for Barcelona’s UNESCO-listed Palau de la Música Catalana.

    15. Tarragona Wine Region

Source: flickrVinyes de Pla de Manlleu, Aiguamúrcia, Tarragona

In the Tarragona province you’re well and truly in cava country. Around 70% of all grapes grown in the Tarragona D.O. are white varieties, like Macabeo, that go towards the production of Catalonia’s much-loved sparkling white wine.

Push out into the countryside and every village will have a co-operative farm shop showing off the best local produce. These are the best places to pick up bottles of cava, moscatell (Muscat) and chartreuse liqueur from their source.

Also on the shelves will be Selva del Camp’s award-winning olive oil and dried fruit and nuts harvested from the orchards on the littoral plain around Reus and Tarragona.

20 things to do in Salou, Spain

If you’re heading to Salou for your summer holidays this year then you’re in for a treat because there are so many things to do in Salou! I visited Salou at the start of the summer and I loved it. It’s such an easy, family-friendly destination with gorgeous beaches, endless sunshine, great restaurants and a relaxed vibe. It’s also a really affordable place for a family holiday abroad.

But Salou is much more than cheap package holidays! There are so many things to do in Salou and the surrounding area. It’s also a great place to hire a car or bike and get out and explore.

So once you tire of your swimming pool and nearest beach, here’s my mini guide and the best things to do in Salou.

Here are just some of the amazing things to do in Salou, Spain that will guarantee you have a jam-packed and enjoyable holiday to remember!

    Where is Salou in Spain?

Salou is a resort town in Costa Dorada. It’s a strip of coastline in the Catalonia region of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea. Beaches here have calm and shallow waters and Salou itself has both smaller coves and long stretches of beaches.

The town is around 98km (approximately a 70-minute drive) south of Barcelona. Salou’s nearest airport is Reus Airport which is only 10km or a 15-minute drive away.

You might think this is an obscure airport that few UK airports fly to direct but that’s not the case at all. Around 15 UK airports fly to Reus during the peak summer months including Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester and several London airports. Jet2, TUI and Ryanair all fly to Reus and their flight times are between two to three hours.

Salou is very close to the cities of Tarragona and Reus and the resort town of Cambrils. All three of these places would make excellent day trips from Salou if you wanted to explore other parts of the region.

    1. PortAventura World

    PortAventura

Starting off strong, without a doubt one of the number one things to do in Salou for families is PortAventura World. It’s a huge complex of several theme parks including PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park and SesameAdventure.

There are other, smaller amusement parks in the same general area, too. It’s like a Spanish mecca of adrenaline and entertainment that will keep your kids buzzing all day!

PortAventura Park is the main one and it boasts more than 40 rides and rollercoasters as well as theatrical performances and plenty of restaurants. There are even PortAventura hotels so it’s like a mini DisneyWorld right on the Mediterranean coast.

And like Disney or Universal theme parks, you can buy package deals if you want to visit more than one of PortAventura World’s parks. There are also express passes which might be a good investment in the summer months. It’s a popular place and some lines have an hour’s waiting time so you’ll be glad you splashed out!

Travel Hack Tip: If you’re expecting to love PortAventura World then I would highly recommend staying in one of the nearby hotels where you get early access into the park. The theme park is brilliant and you could easily spend a few days there.

But it is also very hot with little shade so, personally, I’d want to go into the park for two hours each morning and then leave when it gets busy and the queues are 1-2 hours long! My kids would really struggle to stand in queues in the heat for so long.

    2. Fountains of Salou

You might not think fountains are that exciting, though the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas and the Trevi Fountain in Rome might beg to differ! And in Salou, the fountains are definitely something you need to check out.

Salou has a series of cool fountains including Font Lluminosa, which is the oldest one, Fonts Ornamentals, Font Cibernètica and Font Laberint. A Catalan architect called Carles Buïgas, who also built the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc in Barcelona, designed Font Lluminosa back in the 1970s. So he knows a thing or two about making water look interesting!

During the summer months from July 1st to September 10th, you can catch all four fountains performing their own light and music displays every day. It goes without saying that your kids will love running through these jets. Pack a spare change of clothes in your daypack just in case they get soaked!

Fonts Ornamentals has a light display which is ongoing between 6pm and 10pm. It’s pretty cool because there is a walkway across the fountain where the water sprays an arch over your head! Font Cibernètica performs at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm and Font Lluminosa’s display is at 10:30pm.

In the spring and autumn months, they all perform on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (bank holidays too) somewhere between 10pm to 11pm.

    3. Visit the beautiful coves around Salou

    Platja Llarga, Capellans

Some of the best things to do in Salou have to be the beaches! There are two main beaches (more on those soon!) and several smaller cove beaches called the Cap de Salou Coves.

There are five in total: Cala de la Vinya, Cala els Crancs, Cala Morisca, Cala de la Font and Cala de la Penya Tallada.

These coves are further east of the main strip beaches so you’ll probably need a car to drive to them. Or, you can walk along the Punta del Cap de Salou hiking trail (if you’re feeling active!) because seeing them is definitely worth the effort.

You could easily swim between some of them too as Cala de la Vinya and Cala Font are very close together. Just watch where you’re standing as the coast is rockier here.

These coves are much quieter than the main beaches with more rugged, natural scenery though the payoff is fewer facilities and things to do nearby. But if you’ve got warm, clear waters to swim in and lush scenery to look at, what more do you need?!

    4.

    Salou Tourist Train

When you start travelling as a family, all the cultural tours you used to enjoy doing are soon replaced by more entertaining and stimulating activities. You can have the best of both worlds with the Salou Tourist Train.

It is literally an adorable open-door red bus that looks like a toy train. The train departs outside Salou’s tourist office and drives a circular route around Salou’s main landmarks and points of interest. Some of these are the fountains, the Jaume I monument, the City Park, Torre Vella art gallery and the Church of Santa Maria del Mar.

The Salou Tourist Train runs approximately every half hour and it’s only 6€ for adults and 4€ for kids aged 3+. They have audio guides for both adults and children (if you can persuade them to wear their guides for more than two minutes!) in several languages.

    5. Llevant Beach

Llevant beach is one of the most popular beaches in Salou and therefore one of the top things to do in Salou! It runs parallel to the promenade, Passeig de Jaume I, where all the fountains are. It’s surprising how many activities and amenities this city beach manages to squeeze in because it’s only 1.2km long.

There are two huge car parks on Passeig de Jaume I so finding somewhere to park won’t be an issue. Plus, there are tons of public toilets along the promenade. Showers, beach bars, ice cream shacks, volleyball courts, restaurants and so much more are available too.

If you love lounging on a beach with everything you need nearby (and you don’t mind the crowds!) then Llevant is perfect. You can hire a sunlounger and beach umbrella or bring your own.

    Travel Hack Tip: Try Kayaking!

You can hire kayaks while you’re in Salou which is a great family activity to have fun, keep fit, stay cool and see Salou from a different perspective. Kayaks can be hired from Salou Yacht Club which is between Ponent Beach and Llevant Beach.

    6. Ponent Beach

On the opposite side of the port to Llevant is Ponent beach. While it’s much narrower and has fewer facilities, it’s usually the quieter of the two. Ponent also has a huge children’s play area with lots of palm trees to offer some much-needed shade.

It feels less commercialised yet there are still a few restaurants and bars on the sand. In the off-season, it’s a popular place for the locals to go fishing.

But the difference between the two beaches is negligible. They’re both beautiful, clean beaches with soft sand and calm coastlines. Lifeguards are on duty during the day in the peak seasons and you will no doubt have a great beach day no matter which you choose.

If you want to give both of them a shot, head to Llevant in the morning first when it’s quieter and then go to Ponent beach after lunch.

    7. Camí de Ronda Coastal Path

Who doesn’t love going for a hike in 30°C heat on a relaxing beach holiday? It’s actually quite fun if you venture out in the morning or the evening when the sun isn’t as strong. And keeping active will help you feel a little less lethargic when you return home!

The Camí de Ronda is a 6. 5km coastal walk beginning at Llevant beach and finishing at an old lighthouse called Far de Cap Salou. The first 2km of the path is fully paved and the other 4.5km is a natural path.

The lighthouse itself is pretty cool but the views of the rocky cliffs in this part of Salou are stunning. It’s definitely a hike to do around sunset if you can!

You can also walk down the coastal path in the other direction along Ponent beach, Vilafortuny beach and Cavet beach towards Cambrils. But don’t forget you’ll also have to walk back unless one of you stays behind and picks you up further down the track!

Remember to pack your trainers because walking 6.5km in flip-flops won’t be much fun.

    8. Passeig de Jaume I

On the surface, Passeig de Jaume I looks like just another pedestrianised street. It runs alongside Salou’s main beach, Llevant, and it’s just a big slab of marble, right?

In reality, there is more to do on this street than you might expect. First, it’s dedicated to James I the Conqueror and there is a huge monument to him in the middle of the street. He was a 13th-century Catalan king and he’s an icon to the Catalonian people.

Palm trees line both sides of the street leaving a huge walkway in the middle. And there’s plenty of room to gather around the Fountains of Salou for the nighttime displays.

Salou’s name features in the middle of the strip in huge letters which you can usually find children attempting to climb over. But it’s a great place for an Instagrammable picture.

This promenade and the street just behind it is where you can find a lot of restaurants, ice cream cafes, souvenir shops and tour companies. The tourist office is on this street as well as bike rentals, snorkelling excursions, boat tours and kite surfing.

Don’t forget to check out the old olive tree that grows on the corner of Passeig de Jaume I and Calle de Barcelona. It’s roughly 1,000 years old and looks unrecognisable compared to every other olive tree you’ve ever seen because of its gargantuan size.

    9. Ferrari Land

The fastest roller coaster in Europe!

Located in PortAventura World, Ferrari Land is exactly what you think it is. It is a Ferrari-themed amusement park with over 16 rides and games where everything is gold and red and has at least a vague connection to cars.

Plus, they lean hard into the Italian theme. You’ll find cypress trees, a mini version of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and restaurants like Ristorante Cavallino serving Italian cuisine.

One of the most surprising and coolest things about Ferrari Land is that it’s home to Europe’s highest and fastest roller coaster. Yes, right in Salou! Who would have thought that would be one of the top things to do in Salou?! The Red Force looks absolutely terrifying and hopefully your children who are tall enough to ride it agree.

With any luck, they’ll satisfy their need for speed on the Junior Red Force coaster or the racing tracks. There’s also an exhibit on former Ferrari racing legends and some of their old Formula 1 cars.

    10. Caribe Aquatic Park

Isn’t it against the law to go on a family holiday to Spain and not go to a water park? You’d think so considering how many of them there are all over the country. The PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park has to be up there as one of the best, though.

There are over 16 attractions and pools in the water park including waterfalls, wave pools, pirate ships and mega slides. There’s plenty to do for kids of all ages and lots of Caribbean-themed restaurants and snack bars.

If your kids aren’t too busy plummeting down slides with names like “Torrent” and “Rapid Race” then you can float along Caribe’s lazy river. Or, you can relax on one of their sun loungers by Bahama Beach. There’s easily enough to do to spend a whole day here.

    11. Day Trip to Tarragona

There are so many things to do in Salou that you can have heaps of fun on your holiday even if you never leave the town. But there are so many other beautiful places less than 20 minutes away that it would be a shame not to explore them!

The City of Tarragona is only 17km north up the coast from Salou which is a 20-minute drive or a 15-minute train journey. It’s a port city with sandy buildings and many of them date back to its history as a Roman colony.

You can even take a guided tour of all the sites connected to Tarragona’s Roman heritage. There’s the Roman amphitheatre which overlooks the coastline, a 1st-century chariot racing track, an old Roman aqueduct and a Roman Forum.

Honestly, there are so many ruins in the city you’ll walk right past them just strolling through the streets! And you have to visit the Roman Walls. You won’t believe how much of the old city wall is still standing after 2,000 years.

Of course, any Spanish city isn’t complete unless it has an absolutely spectacular cathedral. Tarragona Cathedral (or to use its full name, the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana i Primada de Santa Tecla de Tarragona) is magnificent. Its courtyard has a beautiful water feature and walking around all the beautiful orange trees will surely put you in a good mood.

Tarragona also has lots of little shops and boutiques and traditional Spanish restaurants. This part of Spain is famous for its seafood and rice dishes so you can’t go wrong with a plate of mussels or a big bowl of paella.

Tarragona Wine Region is essentially Cava Country. It would be rude to not ask for a glass of fizz to accompany your seafood, you are on holiday!

    12. Capellans Beach

Capellans beach is not quite on the same scale as the Llevant and Ponent beaches but it’s not small enough to be a cove. Overlooked by residential apartments and a favourite amongst locals, Capellans is ideal for older couples and families with very young children.

Its smaller size means you don’t need to walk as far from your sun lounger to get to the local beach bar or swim in the sea. And it’s much easier to keep an eye on your kids playing in the sea while you’re sunbathing as there are fewer places for them to run off to.

You can also rent kayaks from this beach and there’s even a beach path for wheelchair users. How cool is that?! More beaches need to have paths so those with extra accessibility needs can dip their toes in the water too!

If you fancy going for a wander, the walkway up the cliffs next to Capellans offers beautiful views of the beach and the other coves along the coastline.

    13. SesameAdventure

You’ve had a Ferrari-themed amusement park and a Caribbean-themed water park as well as the main theme park. Surely that’s everywhere covered in PortAventura World? Oh no, not quite! SesameAdventure is part of PortAventura and caters to the littlest of little ones.

Not only that, SesameAdventure’s theme is a delightful mix of Sesame Street and Polynesia. Even more bizarrely, it fully pulls it off and a trip to this theme park is an absolute delight.

Roller coasters here are much slower, less scary and closer to the ground than the ones at the other parks. There are 3D rides that the whole family can enjoy and theatrical performances featuring Elmo, Bert, Ernie and the whole gang. Many of the rides, like Elmo’s Farm and the Enchanted Garden, have no height restrictions.

And if the character names are confusing, keep in mind that Sesame Street characters have different names in Spanish! Bert is Blas, Ernie is Epi and Big Bird is La Gallina Caponata. In fact, the show’s name in Spain is Barrio Sésamo so you can teach your kids some Spanish while you’re there!

    14. Day Trip to Reus

Reus is a great Salou day trip alternative to Tarragona. Or you could easily do both if you’re staying in Salou for longer than a week! It couldn’t be a more convenient place to drive to from your base in Salou.

It’s the capital of the Costa Dorada region but it’s very different to Salou and other resort towns along the coast. There are fewer tourists and it’s the architecture, galleries, museums, and gastronomic scene rather than beaches which makes Reus a worthwhile place to visit.

It really isn’t surprising that the architecture in Reus is so interesting because it happens to be the birthplace of Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí is famous for designing several structures around Barcelona and the wider Catalonia region like La Sagrada Familia. In Reus, you can check out the Gaudí museum and tourist centre to learn more about his life and work.

And if architecture is your cup of tea, take a stroll along the Reus Modernist Route. There are 23 buildings on this self-guided circular walk, starting and ending in Market Square. There are plaques outside the buildings explaining a bit about who designed them and their history.

If you can only head inside one of the buildings on the route, make it Casa Navas. It’s an intricately decorated townhouse covered in colourful mosaics and stained glass windows.

Like Tarragona, Reus and the vineyards on the outskirts of the city produce many spirits and wines. Museu del Vermut in Reus is the largest vermouth museum in the world (don’t attempt to try all 6,000 varieties!) and is a great place to eat dinner too.

    15. Llarga Beach

Because of Salou’s location on a jagged part of the Catalan coastline, it offers more beaches in one area than many other resort towns. It has long stretches, tiny coves and some smaller beaches in between.

Llarga beach is one of those. You won’t find any sun loungers here but you won’t have to share your slice of sand with anyone else. The cliffs curve around the beach which makes it feel like a safer place to swim. Plus, you’re surrounded by vegetation here instead of high-rise resorts which will make you feel like you’re on an island.

Because it’s smaller and in more of a residential area, it’s a little difficult to find parking so get there early. But it still has all the facilities you need to spend an entire beach day here.

    16. Llenguadets Beach

Make it a double-header beach day by leaving your car parked at Llarga and walking around the cliffside boardwalk to Llenguadets beach. Better yet, you can swim around the cliffs as long as you are careful to avoid the rocks!

Llenguadets beach is a bonus cove that’s right next to Llarga. Honestly, it’s about a five-minute stroll away. Walk up to one of the many viewpoints near these two beaches if you want somewhere beautiful to watch the sunset in Salou.

    17. Day Trip to Cambrils

Reus and Tarragona are perfect day trips from Salou if you are travelling as a couple or family with very young or older kids. But if you have kids in primary school you might find there’s more for them to do in another resort town.

Luckily, Cambrils is 8km south of Salou and only a 15-minute drive away. You get a change of scenery and your kids will struggle to get bored with all the things there are to do in Cambrils. Win-win!

If your children prefer active adventures to theme parks, pay a visit to Jumpland Aventura Ecologica. Instead of roller coasters and rides, they have zip-lines, ropes courses and climbing walls. You could even hire bikes in Salou for the day and cycle to Cambrils because the Camí de Ronda coastal path and beach promenade connects Salou to Cambrils.

You’ll find the beaches in Cambrils much more relaxed than Salou and probably less busy. Their volleyball courts are makeshift and there are fewer sun loungers for hire. But the main beach, Forès beach, still has lots of restaurants, bars and shops along the seafront.

Slightly further south of the main town is where you’ll find the smaller, less crowded beaches. Just some of the ones you can visit are Cambrils, Llosa and Arcadia.

One of the best beaches near Cambrils is actually halfway to Salou. Vilafortuny beach is a vast, clean stretch of fine sand and is perfect to walk on as you are unlikely to have to wade through too many crowds. Because it has fewer swimmers and the water is less calm than other beaches in the area, it’s ideal for renting jet skis or trying out other water sports.

    18. Carles Buïgas Nightlife

No, the Catalan architect Carles Buïgas who died in 1973 does not run a pub crawl. But the street in Salou that’s named after him, Carrer de Carles Buïgas, is where you should head if you want to experience the best of Salou’s nightlife.

It offers everything from bars, clubs, live music and even karaoke. And yes, if you love visiting English and Irish pubs during your summer holidays in Spain then this is where you’ll find them. Most even organise weekly pub quizzes too!

Those who love a dance should head to Kiss, the best nightclub on the strip. Keep in mind that there aren’t loads of nightclubs in Salou but demand for them is high. It’s not too uncool to head to the clubs early, especially when you’re more likely to get discounted or free entry and cheaper drinks!

    19. Visit Salou’s Historic Buildings

It’s easy to forget that these modern resort towns existed long before tourism boomed along the Spanish coastline and have so much history. Salou is no different and has its fair share of fascinating monuments.

Take the old 19th-century Customs and Harbour Masters Office on Plaça Bonet. Salou used to be an important exporter of liquor in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. And while the new updated much of the building in the 20th century, it still has its horse trough and drinking fountain.

Today, Torre Vella might be an art gallery and one of the most important cultural things to do in Salou. But in the 16th century, it was a watchtower designed to spot any pirates approaching Salou’s shores. It also has some beautiful gardens with impressive sculptures.

Masia Catalana, not far from Capellans beach, is a faithful recreation of what a Catalan farmhouse would have looked like hundreds of years ago. They even keep animals like chickens, donkeys and goats onsite so that might be a fun attraction if you have small kids!

    20. Eat the Local Catalan Cuisine

Tapas, tortilla, paella… Everyone loves Spanish food, but it’s not all local to Catalonia. One of the top things to do in Salou on your summer holiday there is to taste as much Catalan cuisine as you can find.

Seafood, grilled vegetables and cured meats are at the heart of traditional dishes in this area. They love a charcuterie board with flavourful cured sausage, bread, tomato, cheese, olives and some kind of chip. Anything with aioli on it (a mixture of garlic and olive oil) is a winner in Catalonia and some even call it “Catalan mayonnaise” because locals eat it with everything.

White beans, aubergine, prawns, rice and anchovies are staples in Catalan dishes. And there’s lots of French influence too so it’s not surprising if you see restaurant menus in this area serving foie gras and duck confit.

But at the end of the day, you should still eat patatas bravas, churros and croquetas if that’s what you want. You’re on holiday! It’s your duty to eat as many delicious Spanish dishes as you can.

Other things to do in the area…

There are so many things to do in Salou but if you’re looking for more then here are some other things I loved doing in the area.

Paddle boarding near Salou was incredible. We paddled to some beautiful caves and got off our boards to explore. The water was calm and warm so even if you’re new to paddle boarding it’s a great activity to try!

Here’s a link to paddle board hire in Salou.

Visiting Cartoixa d’Escaladei, an old monastery and museum complex was incredible and if you have a car for your holiday to Salou then I highly recommend a visit. Not only was the monastery beautiful but the surrounding mountains and the drive through the countryside to get there is breathtaking!

If you’ll be visiting lots of historic attractions during your holiday then it might be worth getting the Catalonia Monument Pass.

Another incredible day out from Salou would be to visit Montserrat Monastery. There’s an amazing tour you can do from Salou and you also go to see the crypt of Gaudi.

While you’re in Salou you can also take a full day trip to Barcelona as it isn’t far away! Here’s a full day trip to Barcelona from Salou that includes free time in the city.

If you’re a sucker for incredible scenery then you can’t miss a trip to Siurana, an incredible mountain village with the most amazing views. If you’ve got a car I recommend driving yourself but you can take a trip from Salou that includes a visit to other pretty villages.

rest and weather in Salou (Spain)

The fabulous coast of Spain, the Costa Dorada, is washed by the waters of the Balearic Sea and basks in the sun all year round. Translated Costa Dorada means “golden coast”. Indeed, the fine yellow sand resembles a gold placer. This region is simply created for a beach holiday, and in June the active swimming season begins.

Acquaintance with the Costa Dorada is worth starting with the main resort town – Salou. The resort is certified as a “Recommended Family Travel Destination” and this is one of the reasons why it is so loved by vacationers with children. Kidpassage will tell about all the other pros, cons and features of visiting Salou at the beginning of summer.

Holidays in Salou in June: advantages and disadvantages of the resort

Salou is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. The resort deserved this title, because it has a lot of significant advantages: a clean coastline, hotels that are ideally suited for family holidays, Blue Flags on the beaches, and more.

Each season is characterized by its own characteristics, so reviews about holidays in Salou in June are not only positive, there are also some negative nuances. However, in fairness, it should be noted that most of the city’s guests still go home satisfied with their vacation. What are the main pluses visiting a resort in the first month of summer?

    • Beach season. In May, the beaches of Salou are not empty, but the full swimming season begins with the advent of summer, when the sea warms up to the most comfortable temperature.
    • Opportunity to visit the Port Aventura amusement park. In summer, the best entertainment center in all of Spain welcomes guests. Many people come here just to visit it.
    • Excellent weather for sightseeing trips.
    • “Bonfires of St. Juan” holiday. In the first month of summer, guests of Salou get the chance to take part in folk festivals. We will tell you more about the holiday below.
    • Weather conditions. Summer in Spain is quite hot, but at the very beginning of the hot season, the sun is not yet so aggressive.
    • Variety of local fruits on the shelves. After a long school year, children need to recuperate. Indulge your little ones with fruits and vegetables, which are already more than enough in Spain in June.

Disadvantages of Salou in June are not so obvious and weighty to spoil the rest, but still these disadvantages should be taken into account:

    • Cool sea at the beginning of the month. If you want to come to Salou just for the sake of a full-fledged beach holiday, then it is better to book a tour for the end of the month, when the water is already well warmed up.
    • Cold evenings. The gap between day and night air temperatures is quite large. Take warm clothes with you so as not to get cold during night walks.
    • The influx of vacationers. In summer, the period of school holidays and holidays begins, so tourists are actively arriving on the Costa Dorada. You need to take care of booking a hotel room in advance.

    Weather in Salou in June

The weather in Salou in June-July is perfect for all kinds of holidays. The sun is moderately hot, and the sea is quite warm. In the middle of summer, the streets become sultry, but thanks to the local climate and sea breezes, the high temperature is easily tolerated.

The weather in early June is typically summer. However, despite the warm sunny weather, the sea is still not warm enough. You can sunbathe on local beaches, but long swims will have to be abandoned.

The temperature in Salou in the middle of June is consistently high (+25 °С and more), but, as we have already mentioned above, the heat is easily tolerated due to the mild climate and sea winds. In addition, evenings bring invigorating freshness.

The weather in Salou at the end of June pampers the guests of the resort with an abundance of sunshine and fine days. At this time, the beaches of the Costa Dorada are flooded with vacationers – everyone wants to refresh themselves in the cool waves. However, the popular sightseeing routes are also not empty, as the heat has not yet reached its peak and the guests of the resort still have the opportunity to take long walks in the fresh air.

    Air and water temperature

The entire Costa Dorada is influenced by the Mediterranean climate, which is considered the most favorable for recreation and living. Although in summer the air temperature can exceed +30 ° C, there is still no extreme, suffocating heat. And in winter, Salou does not suffer from severe frosts. It is comfortable to visit the resort at any time of the year.

Air temperature in Salou in June

The average day and night temperature in Salou in June is +26.2 °С and +19°C, respectively. Spanish evenings can hardly be called cold, the word “refreshing” is more suitable. It is better to stock up on a windbreaker so as not to experience discomfort during evening walks.

    Sea temperature

The Balearic Sea warms up ideally by the end of June, but since May there has been activity on the beaches of Salou. At the beginning of summer, the average water temperature is +21.9 °C. Tourists with small children should better come to Salou in the last days of the month or in early July.

    Precipitation

The Costa Dorada is not characterized by cloudy and rainy weather, but even in summer, slight precipitation is possible. The average rainfall is 32.2 mm, about 3 rainy days are expected.

    Sunny, cloudy, cloudy days

The good news is that vacationers in June will not find a single cloudy day. Cloudy days occupy 10% of the entire month. Sunny weather pleases residents and guests of the resort for 90% of the days.

The weather in Salou in June is sunny and warm. The Spanish sun is treacherous, so don’t forget to pack sunscreen and hats in your luggage. It is better for people who are focused exclusively on a beach holiday to come here in the last decade of the month.

    Beach holidays

The fact that the Balearic Sea at the beginning of the month is not very suitable for swimming does not stop the guests of Salou – with the beginning of the hot season, the local beaches are crowded. Tourists come here not only to swim, but also to sunbathe, relax in sun loungers, breathe the sea air and admire the beautiful views.

Every beach in Salou is great for families, the infrastructure is at a high level. Many bathing areas have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award. All city beaches are free, you only have to pay for an umbrella and a deck chair.

    Playa Punta Larga

In the very center of the city there is a cozy beach surrounded by pine trees (just imagine how clean the air is here!). The length of “Playa Punta Larga” is 600 m, and the width is 35 m, there is more than enough space for relaxation. There are sun loungers, umbrellas, changing cabins, showers, so that the most comfortable conditions are created for visitors. The beach also offers a wide range of water activities.

    Levante

Levante is one of the Blue Flag beaches. Ecology and purity of water correspond to the highest level. The infrastructure is well developed (however, as on the other beaches of the resort), there is a large selection of children’s and adult entertainment, playgrounds are equipped for kids. “Levante” is one of the longest beaches in Salou, but in the summer it is still difficult to retire here.

    Chaplain’s Cove

To the east of Levante there is a picturesque place – a secluded Chaplain’s Cove, surrounded by rocks. The beach area is small, only 200 m long, but well-maintained. Children can ride slides and swings, adults can go windsurfing and other water sports.

    Excursion holidays in Salou

The resort has a large number of attractions, which will be a great addition to a beach holiday. Undoubtedly, the best place for family pastime is PortAventura. You can talk endlessly about this entertainment center. But, as they say, it is better to see once than hear a hundred times. Be sure to add Port Aventura to your list of must-sees and enjoy the entertainment while we share information on other less popular attractions.

    • Things to do with children in Salou

    Macia Catalana Manor

The arrangement of the architectural complex illustrates the rural life and life of the Catalans. The territory of the estate Macia Catalana and the park adjacent to it is 5200 m 2 . Numerous genre expositions of peasant life are presented here, there is a craft market, souvenir shops and playgrounds. At the beginning of June, when it is still not too hot outside, it is pleasant to spend the whole day in the manor.

    King Jaime I Boulevard

At the end of June, you can take a break from the heat of the day during an evening walk along the King Jaime I Boulevard. Palm trees and flower beds are planted on both sides of it, and in the middle rises the king’s monument with an equestrian statue that adorns the boulevard with 1965. In the evening, in the summer, musical fountains are turned on, the multi-colored jets of which gracefully shimmer to the melodic sounds.

    Torre Vella

Torre Vella, or the fortress of Charles V, despite frequent raids, has survived to this day almost in its original form. The fortress hosts an exhibition of 20th-century paintings and a Museum of Contemporary Enamel on a permanent basis. A picturesque garden is laid out around the building, where sculptures by modern masters are located. Torre Velha is open to the public every day, even on holidays and weekends, admission is free.

Here are some places worth visiting for tourists with children:

    • House of Illusions
    • Bosc Aventura Rope Park
    • water park in the neighboring province of La Pineda

Tourists can appreciate other attractions of the Costa Dorada. So, children will be delighted to visit the water parks in La Pineda and Tarragona. In an hour and a half you can drive to the legendary Barcelona with its amazing museums, parks and numerous attractions.

    Holidays, events, festivals

Almost every month, cheerful Spaniards arrange folk festivals, and there are a lot of reasons for this in the calendar. Holidays in Salou in June are an unforgettable sight that will bring a lot of pleasant memories.

The brightest holiday of the month is Night of San Juan (“Bonfires of Saint Juan”), which is usually celebrated from 23 to 24 June. San Juan is a magical night full of superstitions, a time when pagan and religious traditions are closely intertwined. The Spaniards make big fires, because, according to legend, the fire takes away everything bad and protects from evil spirits. It is believed that if you jump over the fire, then the whole next year will be lucky.

On June 20, the religious population of the country celebrates Corpus Christi Day is one of the most significant holidays of the Catholic Church. A solemn procession passes through the streets of the city, Catholics carry a flower platform on which a tabernacle is installed. Behind the column are children scattering rose petals.

    Holiday prices in June

As the high tourist season begins in summer, prices in Salou rise slightly in June. However, the resort will be able to organize a vacation of any level, so you can save money if you wish.

    Price of tours

The cost of tours is steadily increasing every summer month. So, in July, tour operators raise prices by 45%. In August, the cost increases by another 12% compared to July prices.

    Airfare

The same trend can be traced with air travel. Thus, June is the cheapest month to fly. In June, passengers pay 10% less than in July.

    Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca

Fancy a touch of luxury on your next holiday to Lanzarote? Rub shoulders with the rich and famous at the stunning 21st century development of Marina Rubicón, and the enchanting harbour of Playa Blanca, one of Lanzarote’s most desirable resorts. This luxurious leisure hub is home to some of the Canary Island’s most exclusive boats, and is also a great place to try some water sports.

    Shopping

Marina Rubicón has plenty of premium shops and boutiques selling everything from designer clothing to shoes and camera equipment and skincare products. It also has an excellent market every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to 2pm, where you’ll find quality local products such as hand-crafted jewellery and other souvenirs.

    Dining at Marina Rubicón

Feeling a little peckish? You’ll find a great choice of restaurants serving local and international cuisine, all with the stunning backdrop of Marina Rubicón’s luxury boats. From Spanish and Italian to French and regional dishes, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Treat yourself to a cocktail or a glass of Lanzarote’s renowned wines as you enjoy the wonderful views of the marina.

    Visit the Atlantic Museum

Come to the first underwater museum in the Atlantic Ocean and Europe. This fascinating attraction, just 300 metres from Marina Rubicón, includes a huge artificial reef with concrete sculptures, which you can explore by booking a diving excursion, any day of the year.

Whether you’re a novice diver or someone with a bit more experience, you’ll be guided by an experienced instructor who will show you a whole new world just below the surface. The aquatic artworks were designed by the British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who also created the world’s first underwater sculpture garden in Grenada in the Caribbean, which has been ranked among the world’s 25 best wonders by National Geographic. The museum’s artificial reefs were opened to stimulate new marine life, following the extensive deterioration of marine ecosystems around the world.

    Other activities at Marina Rubicón

Book a sailing adventure all year round for the best views of Playa Blanca. Try an exhilarating ocean ride, a segway tour, or a sailing trip to see the surrounding coast or try a bit of deep sea fishing. The marina also has tennis courts and a family swimming pool where you can enjoy more stunning views of the boats of Marina Rubicón.

Other places to visit in Lanzarote

Head to the Timanfaya National Park, a unique Martian like volcanic landscape that was formed during six years of eruptions in the early 18th century. Treat yourself to a tasty lunch at the El Diablo restaurant, which is the only restaurant you’ll ever eat at that cooks its food from the heat of the bubbling lava below the ground! Don’t forget to bring your camera.

Visit the stunning golden sandy beach of Playa de Papagayo, just a short drive to the east of Marina Rubicón, and soak up the sun on the white sand or dive into the emerald water. The water here is so calm, in fact, that it almost feels like a giant swimming pool, which means it’s well suited to timid swimmers and children. In fact, you can even hop on a waterbus to this beach straight from Marina Rubicón.

First Time Cruiser • Age 30s

    Overall the experience was great.
The food on the ship was fantastic compared to the (fascination), which I cruised with last year.
The ship was good. I just wished the waterslide was better.
The stops were great and I had a great time. The only place I wouldn’t go back to is Belize.
The staff: Cruise director Nooman was great. Assistant director Cassidy (classy cassy) was terrible. She was …

Cruises to the Canary Islands (Canary Islands) from Kyiv and Ukraine at a low price

Sea cruises to the Canary Islands are among the most popular in the Atlantic and there are several reasons for this.
First – ports of departure are located in the most popular cities of Europe: Barcelona, Nice, Lisbon; the second – thanks to the mild climate, you can travel on the liner all year round; the third is, of course, volcanoes, which makes these islands exotic and one of the most visited in the world. nine0005 The list of the most popular is headed by: Cruises to Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

    Club Marco: Traveling of professionals

Day 1. To the islands of eternal spring : TEL AVIV, GRAN CANARIA

This morning we take off (with stopover) for the Canary Islands, a magical archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Let’s land on the island of Gran Canaria – scientists say that here is the best climate on the planet! We will be accommodated in a hotel and will be able to feel the real carnival atmosphere. 2 nights in Gran Canaria. nine0007

DAY 2. LAS PALMAS, TASTINGS, “GARDEN OF THE HESPERIDES” AND CARNIVAL

Today we will get acquainted with the city of Las Palmas and an incredibly interesting museum dedicated to the first expedition of Columbus to the West Indies. Then we will visit the only European coffee plantation and try coffee, which we rightly call unusual. Very close by are tropical fruit orchards and wineries (which means you can taste!). In the town of Arucas we will see beautiful examples of monumental architecture and the city park, which bears the poetic name “Garden of the Hesperides”. And after the tour, we will join a fun carnival whirlpool: today a magnificent dance defile is being held on the island! nine0007

DAY 3. THE DUNES OF MASAPALOMAS AND THE GORGE OF GUAYADECUE, TENERIFE CRUISE

After breakfast, we will head to the south of Gran Canaria, where we will see a unique piece of desert “like in Morocco”, with the amazing dunes of Masapalomas, which are constantly changing their forms. We will visit the evergreen gorge of Guayadeque, where picturesque cave villages are famous for their cuisine; we will have an excellent lunch, which is also included in the program. In the evening, on a large comfortable ship, we will sail to the island of Tenerife and its capital, Santa Cruz. 4 nights in Tenerife. nine0007

DAY 4. TEIDE NATIONAL PARK, LA ORTAVA

The Teide volcano is called the “ceiling of Spain”: this greatest mountain peak of the country has long served as a reference point for sailors and travelers. During the tour, we will visit reserved places with amazing volcanic landscapes, frozen lava rivers, moon valleys, rocks of various shapes and colors. We will learn about the local “horizontal rains” and admire the unique Canarian pines: they grow at the level of clouds that you can touch – in the most literal sense! We are also waiting for the magnificent colonial architecture and beautiful carved balconies in the town of La Orotava. We will see the oldest house in the city and learn about the golden apples on the city coat of arms and the carpets that are created here from flower petals and volcanic sand. nine0007

DAY 5. “LORO PARK” AND THE MAIN CARNIVAL PARADE

In the morning we will go on an excursion to “Loro Park”. This is a real empire of entertainment – here is a bird park with a population of amazing parrots, there is an excellent zoo, as well as a dolphinarium with a water theater and amazing killer whale shows. In the afternoon we will arrive in the city of Santa Cruz, where the “Great Carnival Parade” will take place – the central event of this week. This is the apotheosis of the holiday, it will be interesting! In the evening we will return to the hotel. nine0007

DAY 6. LA LAGUNA, TAGAANA, SANTA CRUZ

The entire historical part of the city of La Laguna, remarkable for its strict planning, has been declared a World Heritage of Humanity. After getting acquainted with the urban landscape, we will go to the north of the island of Tenerife, to the landscapes of the Anaga mountain range. In the picturesque village of Taganana, we will have a traditional lunch on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This evening in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the traditional carnival procession of the comic “burial of the sardine” will take place. nine0007

DAY 7. “DRAGON BLOOD” AND VOLCANIC LAVA

Today we will walk around the pretty town of Icod de los Vinos, famous for its incredible Dragon Tree – quite possibly “the oldest living organism on the planet”. The resin of this legendary tree is used to make the unique Dragon’s Blood liqueur, and the locals claim that the drink has healing properties. After the tasting, we will go up to the observation deck with a stunning view of the picturesque pools of volcanic lava. Taking with us souvenirs that can be bought in the shops of Santa Cruz, we will go to the airport and fly to the island of Lanzarote. 3 nights in Lanzarote. nine0007

DAY 8. NATURE AND ART CESAR MANRIQUE

This day of relaxation in Lanzarote tireless travelers will be able to dedicate an additional excursion to the northern part of the island. We learn about Cesar Manrique, the famous artist who created amazing art projects on the island. We will visit the house-museum of the artist, built from hardened volcanic lava. We will go through one of the largest volcanic tunnels and climb to the observation deck, from where we will admire the panorama of the Atlantic. In the unique Cactus Garden, unusual design complements the beauty of plants – and there are more than 1,000 species of them! nine0007

DAY 9. UNEARTHLY BEAUTY OF LANZAROTE AND CARNIVAL

Today we are waiting for the Timanfaya National Park, which is called the “Mountains of Fire”: its unearthly landscapes have become the “visiting card” of Lanzarote. It’s like we’re on another planet! Here, a bunch of dry grass, thrown into a pit, turns into a fire; ordinary water in the pipe becomes a geyser, and meat and fish are fried right on the volcano. We will see the waves “boiling” in the caves, the emerald lagoon of El Golfo, and we will also visit the unique wine-growing region of La Geria, where each vine is protected by a stone fence. In the evening we will see another carnival parade. nine0007

DAYS 10-11. MUSEUM IN THE ROCK AND THE WHITE CITY OF TEGUIS

Today we are waiting for you in one of the most impressive private residences of Lanzarote. This is the Lagomar Museum, carved into the volcanic rock. It stands on the shore of a picturesque lake, surrounded by mysterious grottoes and therefore resembles a fairy-tale palace. We will visit the caves of Jameos del Agua and marvel at the synthesis of art and pristine nature, and after that we will walk around the snow-white city of Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote. It’s time to say goodbye to the Canary Islands: we will go to the airport and fly to the mainland. We will land in Zurich, where we will have a good sleep from the road, and in the morning we will continue the flight to Tel Aviv. nine0007

Road Trip Routes And Car Rental Tips

Tenerife is a great destination for those looking to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf while also exploring the unique landscape. With only patchy public transport options available, renting a car is the best way to see Tenerife’s beautiful beaches, rugged mountains, and lush forests.

The island’s road perimeter is a mere 359 km, meaning you can circumnavigate the entire landmass in just 3-4 hours by car.

The best car rental deals can usually be found at the airport. However, there are two airports in Tenerife, so be sure to compare prices before you book. The vast majority of cars are rented out at Tenerife South Airport, which is closest to the resorts, but Tenerife North is also a perfectly good place to rent your car in Tenerife.

With DiscoverCars you can compare prices from all available car rental companies. This search engine will check both familiar international brands (e.g. Hertz) and local companies in the Canary Islands (like Cicar).

Simply use the search box below:

You will need to have a credit card and a valid driver’s license to pick up your car. Be sure you understand the terms and conditions of renting before signing any agreement, as some companies may charge extra for things like travel insurance, tag fees, mileage fees, and more.

The cost of hiring a car in Tenerife typically ranges from 25 – 50 Euros a day for a compact 4-seater and gas prices are generally low.

    Is driving in Tenerife difficult?

Driving in Tenerife feels like driving in most European countries. If you’re used to driving in other countries, then you should feel comfortable behind the wheel. The roads are generally well-maintained and clearly marked, the laws are the same as in Spain, and there are plenty of scenic routes to enjoy.

    The TF-1 main motorway

It’s important to note that the speed limit is a bit lower than what you may be used to – 50km/hr on normal roads and 90km/hr on highways. Plus, make sure to watch out for the local animals like goats and donkeys that may wander onto the roads. This happens only rarely but is a possibility.

One of the major concerns regarding driving in Tenerife is the traffic. Since the road perimeter is so short, it can be quite crowded with locals and tourists. In the past few years it has increased dramatically in some areas creating traffic congestion.

That said, on the TF1 motorway it’s generally very easy to drive with two lanes on each side. On the north coast part of the TF-5 ring road only has one lane on each side and it’s a bit more crowded as a result, with often a continuous stream of cars flowing down this narrower section.

Some of the road trip routes described further below follow smaller mountain roads, which are not particularly difficult.

    What are the driving distances?

Here are some of the average driving distances between cities and towns in Tenerife.

    • Santa Cruz to La Laguna – 11 km (7 miles)
    • Puerto de la Cruz to Adeje – 56 km (35 miles)
    • Playa de las Americas to Teide National Park – 60 km (37 miles)

As you can see, the distances between each of these locations are relatively short. This makes it easy to explore the island by car!

In Tenerife, they drive on the right side of the road, as in the United States and in Europe (except for the UK and Cyprus).

Driving tips for UK residents in Tenerife

Renting a car in Tenerife is relatively easy for any nationality, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re from the UK. Make sure that your license is valid and up-to-date, as rental companies may not accept expired documents or paper documents. You will need a hard copy of your driver’s license and need to be at least 18 years old.

You don’t need an international driving permit to drive in Spain as you do in other European countries.

You will need to provide insurance, as rental companies usually require some form of coverage. If you don’t have a policy, then you can purchase insurance through the car rental company or your travel provider.

One of the hardest things to get used to when driving in Tenerife is that they drive on the right side of the road with the wheel on the left. This can take a little bit of getting used to, so make sure to be extra cautious when driving around corners.

This can be a bit confusing in the beginning as you might end up rolling down your window vs shifting gears but after about an hour or two behind the wheel, you should get the hang of it.

You can check car rentals on Tenerife here.

Driving tips for Americans or outside the EU

Now for Americans, you would think it’s relatively easy to rent a car as you can do it in the US. However, when driving abroad there are a few extra things to keep in mind.

First off, if you’re from outside of the EU or have an international driver’s license, you will need to present both documents upon rental. Additionally, most companies require that you have at least 1 year of driving experience before renting a car.

The last thing to remember is that many of the cars are not automatic, so if you are used to driving an automatic, you may want to check if the car rental companies have a vehicle available with that option.

    4 road trips in Tenerife

There are some amazing drives in Tenerife. The island is actually worth exploring as a whole and if that’s something you’d like to do, don’t miss my complete travel guide to Tenerife. Here, I will give a quick overview of four really nice road trip routes.

    1. Northwest road trip

One of the best road trips in Tenerife is the mountain drive through Rural de Teno Park. This 40 km (25 mile) drive will take you through some of the most stunning scenery Tenerife has to offer.

Along the way, you’ll pass by quaint villages and farms, lush vineyards, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

A must-visit on this road trip is the town of Masca, a picturesque mountain village right before you make your way to the coastal town of Buena Vista. Once you make it to the coast, enjoy a delicious meal in Garachico, which has some of the best food on the island.

    2. North coast

To explore more of the island, then consider taking a road trip through the north of Tenerife. This route will take you through some of the most beautiful towns on the island, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, museum visits, and town hopping.

The first stop on this road trip is the town of Garachico. This charming coastal town is known for its black sand beaches and lively nightlife.

Next, head inland to the town of Icod de los Vinos. This small town is home to some of the best vineyards in Tenerife, so be sure to stop by one of the local wineries for a tour and tasting. You can also visit the world’s largest dragon tree while you’re in Icod.

From there, continue on to La Orotava, home to some beautiful architecture and lovely plazas. While you’re in town, be sure to visit the Museo de la Historia de Tenerife for a glimpse into the island’s past.

Finally, end your road trip in La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautifully preserved colonial-era buildings.

    3. Anaga national park

If you’re looking for an adventure, consider taking a road trip through Anaga park in the northeast. This route will take you up through the mountains, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, and wildlife watching.

The first stop on this road trip is the town of La Laguna. This charming colonial-era town is home to some beautiful architecture and lovely plazas. While you’re in town, be sure to visit the Cathedral of La Laguna and the Museum of Science and Technology.

From there, head north into Anaga Rural Park. This area is known for its lush forests and stunning mountain views. Be sure to stop by the Cruz de Carmen viewpoint for some amazing views of the surrounding area.

The final stop on this road trip is the town of San Andrés, a small fishing town on the coast. This town is home to some of the best seafood on the island, so be sure to stop by one of the local restaurants for a bite to eat.

    4. The central crater

To experience one of my favorite road trips, you’ll need to drive through the Parque Nacional do Teide in the central crater. This route will take you up to the summit of Mount Teide, which is the highest mountain in Spain. be sure to stop at the cable car station on your way up for a ride to the top of the mountain.

Once you reach the summit, be sure to stop at Roque Cinchado for some amazing views of the surrounding area. From there, head back down the mountain and finish your road trip in the town of La Orotava.

While you’re in town, be sure to visit the Church of La Concepción and the Casa de los Balcones for some beautiful architecture. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in La Orotava, so be sure to try some traditional Canarian cuisine while you’re in town.

No matter which road trip you choose, the island of Tenerife offers some stunning scenery, proving that Tenerife is more than just beachside fun.  So what are you waiting for? Hit the road and explore the island!

The highlight when you exploring Tenerife by car: on the road trough Teide National Park and the volcanic landscape

General informations when you driving a car in Tenerife:
    • Book rental car
    • Speed limits
    • Petrol stations
    • Parking

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, has an incredible amount to discover. Depending on which side of the Pico del Teide you are on, the island impresses with new breathtaking natural and cultural impressions. This is why excursions by car are a special attraction for so many tourists, who explore the “Island of Eternal Spring” to its very last corner on the well-developed roads.   So that you don’t miss the most beautiful sights of Tenerife, exciting walking and hiking trails and the many other highlights of the Canary Island on your car trip, we have put together some of the most beautiful routes. Whichever route you choose, your Tenerife excursions by car will give you an unforgettable experience of the island!

    Routes at a glance:

    Top 5:  Pico del Teide

Top 4:  Panoramic view in the mountains (Teno mountains & Anaga mountains)

    Top 3:  Old coastal trail

    Top 2:  Wine route

Top 1:  Trough the south of Tenerife

Top 5 – On the road to Mount Teide

You can hardly avoid the Pico del Teide during your holiday in Tenerife – and you shouldn’t! The routes that lead through the Teide National Park, to the volcanic crater and through the Canadas are some of the most exciting, spectacular tours that you will take on your Tenerife trips by car!

The best place to start your exploration tour is Los Cristianos, from where you can reach Granadilla de Abona via TF-1 and TF-66. The direct route to Vilaflor is via the very winding C-821 road, and a more leisurely route via Charco del Pino and El Frontón to Vilaflor and the foot of the Pico del Teide. Vilaflor, which is 1450 metres above sea level, is the perfect starting point for a walk through the Teide and the Cañadas.

But you can also cross the seven valleys with their different lava landscapes by car for about 16 kilometres. Your route takes you via Vilaflor and Arona back to Los Cristianos.

Routing: Los Cristianos – Granadilla de Abona – Vilaflor – Cañadas – El Portillo – Cañadas – Vilaflor – Arona – Los Cristianos

    Distance: 128 kilometres

    Journey time: about 3 hours

What you can expect: fascinating volcanic landscapes and rock formations, lava deserts, narrow, winding roads, views over the clouds, hiking trails through the Teide National Park and Cañadas

Top 4 – Panoramic view in the mountains

    Mountain road trough Teno-Mountains

Besides the Pico del Teide and the volcanic landscapes in the centre of the island, Tenerife has two other high mountains. The Teno mountains in the south and the Anaga mountains in the north-east of the island could not be more different. On your Tenerife excursions by car you should therefore plan one or two day tours through both mountain regions. In this way you will get to know the entire wealth of facets of the island!

    Teno Mountains

From the holiday resorts in the south (Los Gigantes, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje) you can reach Santiago del Teide via the C-822 after the end of the TF-1 motorway. Starting from Santiago del Teide, the road takes you in numerous serpentines and hairpin bends up to the Teno Mountains. From here you will reach Cruz Grande. From here you have an astonishing view of the north coast, which is several hundred metres lower, all the way to Garachico. However, before you visit Garachico you should go to Icod de los Vinos and visit the “Drago Mileniaro”. Afterwards you will drive via Garachico to Buenavista del Norte and from there through the Teno mountains along the north coast to Masca – one of the most popular destinations in Tenerife. The tour through the Teno mountains ends finally in Santiago del Teide.

Routing: Santiago del Teide – Erjos – Ruigomez – San Juan – Icod de los Vinos – Garachico – Buenavista del Norte – Punta de Teno – Buenavista del Norte – El Palmar – Masca – Santiago del Teide

    Distance: about 100 kilometres

    Journey time: 2 – 3 hours

What you can expect: breathtaking views to the north coast of Tenerife and the Montana Negras, popular sights like the “Drago MIlenario” in Icod de los Vinos, numerous hairpin bends and hairpin bends, idyllic little towns off the beaten track

    Anaga Mountains

A tour of the Anaga mountains is without doubt one of the highlights of a holiday in Tenerife. The best place to start a trip to the extreme north-east of the high mountains, which are known for their green laurel forests, is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The TF-11 will take you to San Andrés, which is just a few minutes away from one of Tenerife’s most popular beaches – Playa de la Teresitas. The real Tenerife excursion by car through the Anaga mountains begins as soon as you get on the TF-12 from San Andrés. The further you get to El Bailadero and Chamorga, the more dense the mountain slopes become.

The most fascinating feature of the Anaga Mountains is their dense laurel forest, where the high humidity creates interesting cloud formations. Don’t miss the two viewpoints – Mirador de Ingles and Mirador Cruz del Carmen – before you drive back to Santa Cruz via La Laguna.

Routing: Santa Cruz – San Andres – Playa de la Teresitas – San Andres – El Bailadero – Chamorga – El Bailadero – Mirador de Ingles – Mirador Cruz del Carmen – Bosque de la Mercedes – Las Mercedes – La Laguna – Santa Cruz

    Distance: about 83 kilometres

    Journey time: about 2 hours

What you can expect: dense laurel and pine forests, scattered small mountain villages, rugged mountain valleys, breathtaking vantage points, narrow bends and hairpin bends, but well maintained roads

Top 3 – The old coastal track

    View to the coastal road

Many of the roads – like this one along the north coast to Almaciga – are very curvy, but reward with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean

If you are looking for the “real” Tenerife, you should leave the motorway and drive along the old coastal road. On the way from Los Cristianos to Candelaria (or vice versa) you will only meet a few package tourists. The tour takes up to five hours and takes you along winding roads through less busy places off the beaten track. Parallel to the TF-F motorway, take the C-822 along the coast from southern Los Cristianos to Barranco Hondo near Candelaria. On the way you will pass through smaller towns like Chimiche and Las Rosas rather than more touristy areas like Güímar. The special charm of Tenerife is revealed to you, between wasteland and tourist centres.

Routing: Autopista del Sur – exit Barranco Hondo – Geraja – Güimar – Fasnia – Lomo de Arico – Chimiche – Granadilla de Abona – San Miguel – Valle de San Lorenzo – Los Cristianos

    Distance: 145 kilometres

    Journey time: 4 – 5 hours

What you can expect: Coastal region of El Médano, Poris de Abona and Güímar, views of the Atlantic Ocean, magnificent sandy beaches like those in the Montaña Roja area, tourist attraction “Pyramids of Güimar“

Top 2 – Tenerife wine route by car

There are more than 70 local wineries in Tenerife and the quality is increasing every year

One of the most popular routes is the Tenerife Wine Route, because in the area around Tequeste and Valle de Guerra, not far from La Laguna, there are still many wineries and “guaninches” that sell country wines made in the traditional way. Especially along the old country road between La Laguna and La Orotava you can find the guaninches in former truck garages or converted barns.

Grapes like Negramol, Tintilla or Vijariego have been cultivated and processed here since the 16th century. One of the biggest producers is Bodegas Monje near El Sauzal. Here you will also find the “Casa Museo Insular de la Vid y el Vino”, a real wine museum with exquisite wines. The best thing to do is to stay in the area so that you can enjoy an extra glass of wine.

Routing: Santa Úrsula – El Sauzal – Valle de Guerra – Tequeste

    Distance: 26 kilometres

    Journey time: about 30 minutes

What you can expect: traditional Bodegas and Guaninchen, volcanic wines, which matured up to 200 years in oak barrels, fabulous views of the Atlantic north coast

Top 1 – Tenerife road trip trough the south

    View of the southwest coast

There are warm temperatures all year round in Tenerife, which in the south of Tenerife can even reach the mark of 30° degree in summer and winter months. So sun-seeking people should explore the southern tip of the island in particular and travel from El Médano via Granadilla and Vilaflor to Arona and Adeje.

In order to travel safely on the roads of Tenerife, it is important to know the traffic regulations of the island. If you decide to spend your holiday on Tenerife by car, you should familiarise yourself with the traffic regulations of the island. We have summarised the most important facts for you – from speed limits to petrol stations and parking on Tenerife.

How to book car in Tenerife

Whether on site or in your home country, booking a rental car for your Tenerife holiday is not a problem. This is also due to the fact that especially in the holiday resorts on Tenerife, there are car rentals like sand at the sea. Basically you have three options:

    1. Via international car rental companies: International providers such as Avis, Europcar and Hertz have several stations in the larger tourist centres where you can rent and return the car. Compared to local providers the prices are often higher, but the vehicles are often better maintained.

    2. Via local providers: More favourable prices are offered by local car rental companies operating nationwide. Pay particular attention to the technical condition of the desired vehicle and take out fully comprehensive insurance.

    3. Via tour operators in your home country: You can also book a rental car in Great Britain at local rates through your tour operator.

Even if the prices differ, the costs for car rental in Tenerife are very moderate. You can book a rental car from as little as 20 – 30 Euros/day – including unlimited mileage and all necessary insurance.

Attention: To rent a car in the Canary Islands you need to have an international driving licence, at least one year old. Minimum age for the driver is 21 years.

How fast you can drive in Tenerife

The following speed limits are applicable in Tenerife:

    • in in built-up areas 50km/h, more rarely 60 km/h,
    • on road 90 km/h,
    • on highways 100 km/h
    • on motorway 120 km/h.

Where to find petrol stations in Tenerife

Tank empty and no petrol station in sight? You will hardly have this worry in Tenerife, as there is a relatively dense network of petrol stations on the island. Only if you are planning a car tour to the Anaga mountains or to the Teide and the Canadas, you should not set off with an almost empty tank. Especially in the high mountain areas there are no or only a few petrol stations.

The prices for diesel and petrol in Tenerife are quite moderate – in comparison to your home country they are only about 60% of the usual prices here. However, on Tenerife it is common to find petrol stations that take care of filling up the car. At some Repsol petrol stations there are even talking petrol pumps. Tenerife excursions by car are therefore also a real luxury in this respect!

Attention: On some motorways there are tolls. These can be recognised by an additional marking in the form of a P..

    Where to park in Tenerife

During your holiday in Tenerife, pay attention to the colour of the markings on the roadside when you are looking for a parking space. If the roadside is marked yellow, parking is forbidden. Here you will have to expect fines. If the areas are marked in blue, parking is subject to a fee.

In the language of the ancient inhabitants of the Guanches, Tenerife means “snowy mountain”, and this name was given to the island thanks to the highest mountain in Spain, Teide, which divides the island into two parts: the northern one with lush green vegetation and the southern, hot and arid area with clear blue skies . And that is why Tenerife is often called the island with “two faces”. nine0005
