Guide to Arrecife
The city of Arrecife is located on the island of Lanzarote, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. The city has a port located on the east coast of the island. Arrecife is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city full of history and culture. The name comes from the Spanish reef and refers to the volcanic rock formations that are in the sea and protect from the picturesque harbor. Get ready, ’cross fans! It’s time. The 74th edition of the UCI Cyclocross World Championships will take place from February 4 and 5 at the legendary Hoogerheide Cyclocross course in the Netherlands.
Hoogerheide is a fast, flat and technical course with an exceptional history. It’s been the traditional finish for the UCI Cyclocross World Cup since it was founded as a farewell for Adri van der Poel, father of one of the overall race favorites on the men’s side, Mathieu van der Poel, when he retired from racing (the elder van der Poel now designs the courses at Hoogerheide, including the World Champs course for this weekend. No pressure, MVDP!).
There won’t be any repeat champions this season with 2022 world champions Tom Pidcock and Marianne Vos pulling out of the event.
Here’s all the information you’ll need to watch this weekend
Sports fans love a good rivalry, and pro cycling fans are no exception. Rivalries are one of the foundational things that spurs our growth from someone who just “watches a sport” to a dedicated fan. Epic rivalries are the pro cycling gateway drug. The biggest storyline of CX Worlds this year in the elite races is the culmination of two epic rivalries we’ve watched unfold all winter long.
Fem Van Empel (Jumbo Visma) and Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Deceunick) in action during the women’s elite race at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Benidorm, Spain on Sunday 22 January 2023.
JASPER JACOBS//Getty Images
Fem vs. Puck clash again for the women’s title!
The entire women’s UCI Cyclocross World Cup was essentially a battle between the two 20-year-old phenoms, Fem Van Empel (Jumbo Visma) and Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Deceunick), with Van Empel winning first place with just five more overall points than Pieterse.
Normally these riders would be racing in the U23 category in the World Championships, but they’re just…too good. Therefore they’re been going head-to-head in the Elite category, where no one else has been able to touch either of these riders. They’ll be racing in the Elite category once again during the World Championships as the two undisputed favorites for the rainbow jersey win.
Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Decekunick) sprint for the finish of the men’s elite race at the Cyclocross World Cup cyclocross event in Benidorm, Spain, Sunday 22 January 2023.
JASPER JACOBS//Getty Images
Mathieu van der Poel vs. Wout van Aert for all the marbles!
It has also been hard to miss the excitement around the showdown during this year’s Cyclocross season between Peterse’s and Van Empel’s teammates, the two super-talents on the men’s side, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceunick) and Wout Van Aert (Jumbo Visma). These riders were the two everyone was talking about during the World Cup (as they generally have been for the last several years) with van der Poel leading Van Aert by seventy-eight points by the end of the series.
The rivalry between these two goes back to each rider’s junior racing days, or maybe even further back, given the gene pool of these two riders. It takes on almost mythic proportions because not only are these so well matched in talent, there’s also a matter of national pride on the line. Van der Poel hails from the Netherlands, and Van Aert is from Belgium, and the fervor with which both of these countries obsess over cyclocross is similar to America’s love of football.

Paragliding is the closest humans can get to experience flying like a bird. Paragliding is not to be confused with parasailing or skydiving. A paraglider is a state-of-the-art flying wing which soars through the air using wind currents and thermals to maintain or even gain height.
The pilot (and passenger) sit comfortably in a specially designed harness that is also equipped with a reserve parachute. The pilot has full control of the direction and speed of the glider. Paragliding is a weather dependant sport. All takeoff, landing locations and flight times depend on the current weather conditions.
Paragliding in Tenerife is one of the most aspirational locations for paragliding due to it’s dramatic and breathtaking scenery. Adrenaline loving pilots can quench their thirst for adventure as they soar between mountains and across deep canons, making their way to dreamy, postcard-perfect coastlines.
BOOK NOW
A tandem flight costs from 90€ for an approximate 20 minute flight depending on weather conditions. All flights include: free hotel pick up and drop off, bottled water, full insurance and all necessary equipment. We also take group bookings upon request.
Almost everyone from 4 to 94 years old can experience paragliding in Tenerife. No experience is necessary. As long as you weigh under 100kg (15.5 stone) and can jog just a few steps on take off and landing, you’re fit to fly! Those under 16 years old will require parental consent.
Either here online via any of the BOOK NOW buttons, by WhatsApp or calling us 0034 645470000. E-mail works fine too. Paragliding is weather dependent, try not to book too close to your departure date to allow for date changes due to weather conditions.
A spirit for adventure! Apart from that you’ll need a sturdy pair of shoes (no sandals) and sunscreen. We have shoes available for loan if necessary and jackets are available to keep you warm on cooler days as we take off from 800 meters with extra height gained depending on weather conditions.
To fly like a bird! No engines, no noise. No jumping off cliffs, no free falling. As the wing comes up gracefully above your head, you and your pilot will magically lift off the ground in a secure, comfortable harness to safely soar and glide to a gentle landing. Paragliding in Tenerife is truly one of the most magical locations in Europe to take to the skies.
We are based in the Costa Adeje area in the southern part of Tenerife where we can fly over 340 days per year. We fly every day (weather permitting) all year round meeting at 10am, 12am, 2pm and 4pm (also at 6pm during summer months). Other times apply for our “El Teide” flights.
On the rare occasion of your flight being cancelled to bad weather conditions, we will reschedule your flight at no extra charge or offer a full refund if we fail to find a time that suits you. |
From start to finish the entire activity was amazing. The guys were so friendly and explained everything. Our paragliding nearly got canceled because of

Well, i’m usually not into writing bad reviews, but when things add up a bit too much, I guess something has to be said.
The first thing I should… read more say is, if you aren’t able to be polite, and keep your stress to yourself, than maybe you shouldn’t work with tourists. The major problem was the “boss”, just not being polite at all, being very rude on the phone, very stressed the whole way, and putting up fake smiles when he starts filming the “joyful experience”.
We were 4 clients on the trip, including 2 young chinese guys. In the trip up the mountain, they were just blatently talking about those boys and making fun of them. Maybe thinking those boys didn’t speak english.
I got lucky and flew with a nice german guy, but wasn’t the case with my friend who got to be with “the boss”.
Then another akward thing is the filming part, which is kind of forced onto you. They dont ask you if you mind being filmed and make you hold the camera, and actually ask you to smile and put thumbs up when pictures are being taken. So while the flight is about 5-10 min long, you have to hold a selfy stick (whether you want it or not), which kind of ruins your own experience of being up there
Besides it all, the experience was actually good, I just think “the boss” had a bad day or something, and forgot he was dealing with humans and not walking wallets, or maybe has been doing this for too long and forgot how to transmit his own passion.
Hope your experience will be a better one.

Paragliding in Tenerife is something you should definitely try. Although tourists visiting Tenerife often confuse it with the popular water sport parasailing which is done above the water with the help of a boat. In addition, there is a special term for paragliding when it is performed with 2 people at the same time. Which is the case of this experience since you will fly together with an instructor, an explanation of this can be found below.
Although the word tandem is often dropped, this experience is technically called a Tenerife paragliding tandem. This is because paragliding tandem is a form of paragliding where two people fly together, with one person (the pilot) piloting the paraglider and the passenger (you) sitting in a harness in front of the pilot. Tandem paragliding in Tenerife is a popular activity for people who want to experience the thrill of paragliding, but do not have the necessary skills or training to pilot a paraglider themselves. The passenger needs no special training or experience to participate in a tandem paragliding flight in Tenerife, as the pilot is responsible for all aspects of the flight. In short, a tandem paragliding flight in Tenerife can be a great way to get a taste of what it is like to fly a paraglider and can be a fun and exciting experience for both the pilot and the passenger. Club Canary only offers tandem paragliding flights, but uses the word “paragliding” in advertisements and the text below because it is more familiar to the wider public.
Paragliding in Tenerife is very popular among island visitors because flying over a volcanic island is stunning. Moreover, weather conditions in the Canary Islands are usually favorable year-round and prices for paragliding in Tenerife are cheap compared to other countries. Booking paragliding in Tenerife can easily be arranged with Club Canary, which cooperates mostly with the company “Fly Tenerife”. Fly Tenerife employs experienced paragliding instructors who hold certificates from FELA and FAE. You can expect the instructors to ensure that you have a fun and most importantly, a safe Tenerife paragliding adventure. When you book paragliding in Tenerife, there is always a chance that the flight might get canceled or have to be rescheduled due to weather conditions. Therefore, it is a good idea if you are going on vacation to Tenerife to book your paragliding early in your vacation so there is still time to move if necessary. There are several paragliding offers in Tenerife, information about the 3 you can book at Club Canary can be found below.

Paragliding in Tenerife is something you should definitely try. Although tourists visiting Tenerife often confuse it with the popular water sport of parasailing, which is carried out over the water with the help of a boat. In addition, there is a special term for paragliding when it is performed with two people at the same time. What happens in this case, since you will be flying with an instructor, you will find an explanation for this below. nine0008
Although the word “tandem” is often omitted, this experience is technically called tandem paragliding in Tenerife. This is because tandem paragliding is a type of paragliding in which two people fly together, with one person (the pilot) flying the paraglider and the passenger (you) sitting in the harness in front of the pilot. Tandem paragliding in Tenerife is a popular activity for people who want to experience the thrill of paragliding but do not have the necessary skills or training to paragliding on their own. To participate in a tandem paragliding flight in Tenerife, the passenger does not need special training or experience, since the pilot is responsible for all aspects of the flight. In short, a tandem paragliding flight in Tenerife can be a great way to learn what paragliding is all about and can be a fun and exciting experience for both pilot and passenger. Club Canary only offers tandem paragliding but uses the word “paragliding” in advertising and in the text below because it is more familiar to the general public. nine0008
Paragliding in Tenerife is very popular among visitors to the island, because flying over the volcanic island is an amazing sight. In addition, the weather conditions in the Canary Islands are generally favorable all year round and the prices for paragliding in Tenerife are cheap compared to other countries. Paragliding bookings in Tenerife can be easily arranged with Club Canary, which cooperates primarily with Fly Tenerife. Fly Tenerife employs experienced paragliding instructors who are certified by FELA and FAE. You can count on the instructors to provide you with a fun and most importantly safe Tenerife paragliding adventure. When you book a paragliding flight in Tenerife, there is always the possibility that the flight may be canceled or rescheduled due to weather conditions. Therefore, if you are going on a holiday in Tenerife, it is better to book your paragliding flight in advance so that there is time to reschedule it if necessary. There are several paragliding offers in Tenerife, 3 of which you can book with Club Canary can be found below. nine0008

That the paragliding took place was a miracle, I thought it would not work this time. On the very first day in Tenerife, I called the pilots, they told me to wait, the time for flights was not suitable and the forecasts were still unfavorable – the wind with Kalima sand was blowing from Africa, there was almost no visibility. And every day, looking at the mountains in the haze, I thought – everything is postponed until the next visit. But two days before returning home, we received a call and in the evening the flight still took place. And the next day the mountains were again covered with Kalima. The Lord gave us a day)
I got the Italian Roberto as a pilot, and Frenchman Jean Marc for my Mashka. Both spoke Spanish, and they got it right. The guys are incredibly funny. When we set off in a minivan to the launch site, a couple of minutes later we only found that the trunk had opened and we had lost a bag with a paraglider along the way. They came back, picked them up, the men neighed, clapped their hands ¡ Increible! (unbelievable!) and joyfully drove on. But as pilots – serious, one could not be afraid)
Starting point in the south-west of the island in the Adeje area (Adeje), next to Mount Conde, from a platform at an altitude of 800 m.
The launch pad is carpeted. The sky is twilight, a mixture of clouds and Kalima, the next day it was raining, which is rare for this season. So the pictures had to be lightened.
The car drives almost to the site, no climbing was necessary. Next to Roberto is the same “lost” paraglider, mine was…
Local paragliders look like pirates) Mostly French and Spaniards
There is such a sign next to the launch pad. I still don’t understand if this is for environmental protection or such professional humor about flights
This is Roberto getting ready for the launch, praying…
Ready for the launch, the Holy Madonna protected us
My Masha was the first of the three to take off
It’s warm upstairs, but I was mercilessly sick on the day of the flight , caught still in Mallorca in snorkeling. So I’m in a jacket that served as a scarf, and with a sour face
The first ones went… Cheerful farewells
Roberto immediately prepares our paraglider. He suggested that I put the camera in the “trunk” of the suspension system, into the pilot’s seat. Say, will be dizzy and may feel sick. She promised that this would not happen and continued to shoot further …
Our paraglider, yellow. I’m lucky for this color
The start is a run along the edge of the carpet, on the count of three, pull up your legs and that’s it, they flew
It’s immediately clear to me, a happy and enthusiastic person) Stop filming, just look and admire what a beauty…
And on the way to this pool, Roberto arranged an acrobatic for me, this is a dive down the spiral. It’s cool, especially considering that the ground was pretty close)) But it wasn’t scary, I’m not normal
Landing site
The wing is folding, the sky is getting dark. .. The next day it will rain, fog and Kalima, and we slipped through the window
And the last one is landing. It flew off before me, but it lands later, it’s a mess…
And what faces those who flew! The mood rises incredibly)
Masha and Jean Marc generally became their own on the board. He arranged acrobatic and let her “steer” ))
Packing a paraglider, well, almost like a balloon, only much faster)
Seeing my suffering, Jean Marc massaged my aching neck, strongly and effectively, really felt better! He ordered the head to turn gently, wrap it in warmth, and if you hold it with your hand, then not the one on the sore side. He didn’t answer my question, he was a doctor or a sorcerer, he just grinned … He’s just French)
The guys said that from May to September is not the best time to fly – warm air rises from the sea to the mountains and there is almost no wind . Here in the rest of the time you can fly far and long.
