November 2020 was warm and with excess precipitation over most of Primorye.

The average monthly air temperature was -1…-6 ºС, on the coast 0…+3 ºС, which is 1.5-2.5 ºС higher than the long-term average values. The first decade was warm in terms of the temperature regime, the second was extremely warm (1-2 °C and 4-5 °C higher than long-term values, respectively), the third was close to the norm.

At night, the air temperature in the first two decades ranged from +5…+10 ºС to -4…-9 ºС. On the night of November 5, 10, 11 and 12, a drop to -12 … -17 ºС was observed in the central regions. In the third decade, the temperature background dropped to -13 … -18 ºС, in the central regions at times -22 … -27 ºС, and only on the southern coast it was -4 … -9 ºС.

During the day, there were also fluctuations in air temperature from comfortable +11…+16 ºС (in the periods November 1, 5 — 7, November 12 — 15) to mild frosts, 0…-5 ºС.

In the third decade, there was a decrease to -3 … -8 ºС, in the north of the region to -10 . .. -12 ºС.

In November precipitation in the form of rain, sleet and snow fell 40 – 92 mm (at some weather stations – Yakovlevka, Sviyagino 100 – 106 mm), which amounted to 1 – 3.5 monthly norms. In the north-east of the region, there was a shortage of precipitation – 10-13 mm fell, which is 24-33% of the monthly norm.

In Vladivostok, for the third year in a row, an excess of precipitation is observed in November – from 1.5 to 2.5 rainfall norms per month.

The first and third decades were dry, except for the far north in the first decade.

The second – with excess precipitation throughout the territory (2-7 ten-day norms, in the western regions of the region 8-10 norms).

A significant deterioration in weather conditions was observed on November 19-20:

Due to the southern cyclone reaching the coast of Primorsky Krai on November 19-20, heavy and very heavy precipitation occurred in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. The total amount of precipitation was 30 – 74 mm, in some places in the west and southeast of the region 77 – 90 mm – 1.5 – 3.4 monthly norms, in the east 0.3 – 1.2 norms.

In the cities of Nakhodka and Partizansk, very heavy rain was observed with an amount of 53-54 mm in 12 hours or less.

At 13 meteorological stations there was a very heavy snow (dangerous phenomenon – HH) more than 20 mm in 5-11 hours, at 3 stations 2 and 3 times in two days. The most intense snow fell in the west and northwest of the region. At some stations for two days the amount of precipitation was close to the monthly records of 37-73 years ago.

Precipitation was accompanied by sticking wet snow, black ice and black ice. In Vladivostok and Anuchino – heavy ice, deposit diameter 26 – 29 mm (OH). The duration of the dangerous phenomenon was 210 and 62 hours, respectively.

Strong wind 16-21 m/s was observed in the water area of Lake Khanka and in nearby settlements; on the coast 18 – 23 m / s, near capes in gusts up to 29 m / s.

Very strong mixed precipitation and very heavy snow in November in Primorsky Krai are observed almost every year, but they are not of such a massive character and intensity.

Freezing rain, snow and ice caused huge damage to the economy of Primorsky Krai . Heat and power supply was broken, there was no water. To eliminate the consequences of the disaster, which covered a significant territory of the region, units of the army, the Pacific Fleet, rescue teams of the Ministry of Emergency Situations from neighboring regions were involved. In the Primorsky Territory, on November 21, a state of emergency of a regional nature was introduced.

Interestingly, in the first and second decades of the month (until November 18) in the western and southern regions of the region, 4 (high) forest fire hazard class according to weather conditions .

Strong wind in the region (16 – 23 m/s) was observed for 14 days.

There were 16 days in Vladivostok with strong wind.

In November, the weather is usually cold in the morning, mildly warm during the day and cold again in the evening.

However, in late November you can expect colder temperatures and fewer hours of sunshine per day as well as early sunset.

European Union (EU) Climate Change Service Copernicus scientists predict abnormally warm weather across much of Europe from December to February. Bloomberg writes about this, citing a study.

What predictions did the service make?

According to the Copernicus seasonal forecast, the air temperature in most of the UK, Central and Southern Europe is up to 60% likely to exceed historical averages. Abnormal warmth during the winter months is expected in coastal regions along the Baltic, Mediterranean and North Seas.

Climatologists also believe that in most of France and Germany, the amount of precipitation in winter with a probability of 40 to 50% will be less than the norm.

According to the agency, mild weather conditions in winter can reduce the demand for natural gas and prevent the depletion of its reserves from storage.

Eurasia Group (a political risk consulting company headquartered in New York, USA – aif.ru note) wrote shortly before the Copernicus report appeared that “most weather models predict relatively mild conditions for the remainder of 2022 ”, so there will be enough gas even in case of a cold snap in 2023.

In early November, Bloomberg wrote, citing long-term forecast data from Maxar Technologies and Marex forecasting centers, that November in Europe would be warm, and this would reduce the consumption of gas from storage facilities. At the same time, Maxar meteorologist Matthew Dross stated that the possibility of episodic cold weather in November or the coming winter should not be ruled out.

At the end of October, the agency reported that the volumes of gas stored by European countries for the winter exceeded their needs. The surplus arose as a result of increased supplies of liquefied natural gas and warm weather in the fall. Leading analyst and senior meteorologist at the Italian energy company Illumia, Giacomo Masato , said the fuel glut will remain until at least December.

What is the Copernicus service?

Copernicus combines data from scientists from the UK, France, Germany, Italy and the USA. They make monthly and seasonal forecasts based on a data array of satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations around the world.

Are there other weather forecasts for the winter in Europe?

The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) expects the coming winter in Europe may be colder than usual, the British newspaper Financial Times reported in early October. Forecasters also predicted that the region would experience less precipitation and less wind, which would negatively affect hydro and wind energy.

The publication emphasized that if the forecasts come true, it will become a problem for the authorities of some EU countries. Anyone who wants to read about how the Germans are freezing without Russian gas will have to be patient: so far everything is going completely wrong. October was very warm in Germany, many households do not turn on heating, the industry is saving energy, stockpiling in almost full gas storage facilities continues, and all this has accelerated the fall in gas prices.

In previous years, in Germany gas was usually withdrawn from UGS facilities around October 20, but this time this is not necessary. “Injection is still going on,” the Federal Grid Agency (Bundesnetzagentur, BNetzA) said in its daily report on the state of gas supply in Germany on Thursday. According to him, German gas storage facilities are currently 96.49% full on average.

Even the largest UGS facility in the entire European Union, Rehden, with a capacity of almost 4 billion cubic meters, which was previously controlled by Gazprom and in the spring, before the transfer to the control of the German state, was practically at zero, now it is already filled to 86 . 62%. Judging by the situation on the gas market, its injection will continue, at least in the near future.

After all, every month since May, Germany has been consuming significantly less gas than the average for the same period over the past four years. According to the latest BNetzA data published on October 20 for the past week, industrial enterprises, households and small businesses in Germany spent an average of 1,759gigawatt hour per day (GWh). This is a saving of approximately 27% compared to 2018-2021, when the figure was 2407 GWh. And in the first week of the month, the savings amounted to almost 30%.

At the same time, a significant contribution to the reduction in consumption was made by households and small businesses, which are combined in BNetzA statistics into one group. From the data published on the agency’s website, this group used 29% less gas in the first week of October than the average for the past four years, and 31% less in the second week. Thus, the formal start of the heating season in Germany on October 1 this time did not lead to an increase in natural gas consumption, which is usual for this time of the year.

Meteorologists report “very mild weather”

This week’s data, which BNetzA will release next Thursday, will certainly confirm this trend. After all, the week began with the fact that on Monday, October 17, 25 degrees were recorded in different regions of Germany: “Indian summer” turned out to be especially warm this year. In the daily reports of the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the phrase “very mild weather for this time of year” appears every day.

The same wording is contained in weather forecasts until the end of the month. DWD assumes that the air, especially in densely populated regions in the west and southwest of the country, will warm up to 20-22 degrees during the day and cool down to 11-16 degrees at night. At such temperatures, few people in Germany will actively use heating, so by the end of October, gas savings for heating housing and commercial premises (for example, shops, restaurants, hairdressers) could well be 30% and even a little more.

By the way, German households should cut gas consumption by 30% so that Germany could no longer use Russian gas from next year, and besides progress towards the goal of climate neutrality in 2045. This was announced on October 20 by scientists from the Potsdam Institute for the Study of Climate Change (PIK), presenting a study in Berlin in which they calculated various scenarios for gas supply to Germany in the context of the decarbonization of the German economy gaining momentum.

It is still difficult to predict whether the Germans will save gas as much in the coming months as compared to the same periods of previous years. Much will depend on the weather, and it is impossible to predict it scientifically for several weeks and even more so for several months ahead. However, one can resort to mathematical models based on meteorological observations and statistical data.

The German Internet portal dedicated to weather forecasts wetterprognose-wettervorhersage.de at the beginning of October analyzed the results of such meteorological models for the winter period 2022/2023, presented by various scientific centers, and came to the conclusion that it is more worth counting on abnormally high temperatures: “Neither “one of the forecasting models does not predict a more or less normal winter, let alone a cold winter. One model even predicts an extremely warm winter, which in a warming climate would not be very surprising.” 9European quotations gas futures have been steadily going down in recent weeks. Actually, the decline has been going on since the end of August, when Gazprom suddenly announced a new supposedly preventive shutdown of Nord Stream.

September 8, 2022. Opening of a new LNG terminal in Eemshaven, the Netherlands near the German border reached 337.24 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). After that, a gradual drop in quotations began, although Russia did not resume the supply of Russian gas through this pipeline to Germany and other countries of northwestern Europe in early September.

So, on September 30, the futures cost 190.45 euros, and on October 19 it fell in price to 113.37 euros. Moreover, since the end of September, the day-ahead prices, which had previously actually coincided with futures quotes, broke away from them and rapidly went down, falling on October 17 to 62.2 euros. Two days later, they grew to 69.81 euros. Nevertheless, real gas shipments that can be received “the next day” still cost much less, as we see, than “paper” contracts for delivery “in a month”, which are often played by stock speculators.

To summarize: after the start of the heating season in Europe, gas prices did not increase, but significantly decreased, while in Germany, in conditions of unusually warm weather, gas consumption was significantly reduced and, at the same time, its reserves in underground storage facilities increased almost to the maximum, from where it will be available take in case of a sharp and prolonged cold snap, which, however, is not yet foreseen.

The southern regions that stayed relatively mild in previous months will feel a sharp turn in November. In addition, daylight hours get noticeably shorter, with early sunsets occurring before 4 pm by the end of November, as is typical of Northern Europe. Those who love cozy weather will find a true Herbst (autumn) vibe with locals happily pulling out their sweaters, more candles at bars and restaurants, and deep autumn colors in Germany’s cities and countryside.

Expect some temperature variations depending on where you travel. Berlin, the nation’s capital, has an average daily high and low of 46°F (8°C) and 37°F (3°C). Frankfurt, in Germany’s southwest, is typically the warmest city, yet this month, there’s hardly a difference, with an average daily high and low of 48°F (9°C) and 39°F (4°C). Places in the southern Bavarian Alps, near Germany’s highest peak, Zugspitze, are colder at night, with lows typically reaching 28°F (-2°C) and a good chance of snow. Germany’s coast to the north will feel milder with more rain and wind coming in from the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

November is a great time to visit if you prefer a peaceful version of Germany when crowds are few before the holiday rush. Alternatively, take a short flight from the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport to Munich. Here you can have your pick of adventures from day trips to historic cities like Nuremberg and Stuttgart, or resort towns in the Bavarian Alps that will put you in view of Germany’s highest peaks.

Then there is Frankfurt, home of the busiest airport globally, which offers several day trips to castles, and train routes in nearby wine regions, spa towns, and countless villages and activities in the mountainous Black Forest.

And if hitting the autobahn is on your wish list, this is the right time to avoid summer crowds. All the autobahn routes have frequent (and clean) service areas offering fuel, bathrooms, and restaurants. November is likely the last month recommended for a scenic drive, particularly at the start of the month. Roads like the German Wine Road are a great option, as well as the Romantic Road, where you might like to start from north to south and end at the Neuschwanstein Castle situated on a magnificent hilltop.

What to Do

Germany is blessed with world-class cities, but none can top Berlin. Martinsfest, Rhineland. St. Martin’s day celebrates the 4th-century saint and has similarities to Halloween with kid-friendly decorations, costumes, and parades.

Christmas markets, nationwide. Toward the end of the month, you’ll notice Germany getting ready for Christmas when nearly every city has at least one Christmas Market. The fun and festive markets usually start on the last weekend of November.

Tollwood Festival, Munich. An alternative Christmas festival in Bavaria’s capital celebrates social and environmental issues through art, music, and theater. As a general rule, the Mauritian winter is best spent on the west coast, especially if you are traveling during the cyclone season, but summer conditions are better in the east of the island, where the heat is not as sweltering as in the west and north.

Summer and winter seasons in Mauritius do not coincide with ours: winter falls on May-October, and summer – on November-April.

The warmest and most gentle sea in the northwest of the island , which is best suited for a relaxing beach holiday.
The south coast is well suited for water sports – it is not protected from ocean winds by a coral reef, and there are excellent conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing and other active water activities.
Tourist infrastructure is best developed in the north of the island – there are ATMs, hospitals, large shopping centers, and many small shops.
On the north coast of there are several famous beaches of Mauritius: Pereybere, Grand Bay or Grand-Baie, Mon Choisy, Trou aux Biches ) and Cap Malheureux. Three of them made it to my Top 5 Best Beaches in Mauritius.

The main disadvantage of the northern coast of is that it is far from all the sights of the island.
On the west coast of is located the capital of the island, Port Louis , and there are also excellent conditions for hiking . It is here that the famous mountain Le Morne is located, after which one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius is named, and hotels offer many opportunities for outdoor activities, from cycling tours through mountain gorges to visiting national parks.
On the west coast of are the beautiful beaches of Balaclava and Flic-en-Flac, as well as Albion, Tamarin in the bay of the same name and Le Morne.

On the eastern side of Mauritius, many small islands are scattered in the coastal waters, almost all of which are accessible to the public. Some of them are part of national parks, and some have their own beaches – such as, for example, on the island of Ile aux Cerfs.

The main problem is that the south of the island is not protected from strong waves. Of the most comfortable, only Bel Ombre, Riviere des Galets and St Félix Beach can be distinguished. But even they attract tourists more with their picturesqueness than with the opportunity to swim. But there are quiet bays in the south of Mauritius – and it is in them that some of the best hotels in Mauritius are located.

In my opinion, for recreation is to choose between the beaches of the north and west of the island . There are several interesting beaches on the east coast, but the northwest and west coasts of the island are the most developed in terms of tourist infrastructure. The north of the island can offer beaches for snorkeling and just for swimming with fine, beautiful sand. This is my subjective opinion, which you may not trust.

What To Expect Visiting Gran Canaria In November | Gran Canaria Winter Travel

When looking for a winter getaway in Europe, there’s not a huge amount of choice if you’re after warmer temperatures. The safest bet is to head to the Spanish Canary Islands which lay just off the coast of Africa. They are technically part of Spain, so have the Euro, EU data roaming and all the same entry requirements as the mainland. I visited Gran Canaria in November. So here’s a little look into what you could expect from the weather in Gran Canaria in November and what it’s like to visit the island in winter.

Weather in Gran Canaria in November

The best weather on the island in winter is along the south coast, this is where the majority of tourist resorts are. The mountains act like a bit of a barrier, pushing the clouds to the north of the island. In November, Gran Canaria’s south coast averages day time temperatures somewhere in the low 20c’s. I experienced some days of 20c and others with highs of around 24c. I still wore suncream everyday.

Night time temperatures dropped to the mid teens. This meant that early mornings and during the evenings, I often needed a hoodie.

Sunrise: Between 7.15am – 7.30am

Sunset: Between 6.15pm – 6.05pm

If travelling from the UK, in comparison, Gran Canaria has approximately 2 hours of additional daylight hours, during the winter.

I stayed in the resort town of Taurito, in the south west of the island. It lays in a valley with high cliffs either side. The Taurito Princess is an east facing hotel. Even though sunrise was around 7am, the sun often didn’t rise above the cliff until around 9. 30am. As a solo traveller, I used to go and sit around the pool early in the morning. Due to the valley being in the shade, I often needed to keep my hoodie on until the sun finally made an appearance over the top of the cliff. Once the sun was out, I was an OK temperature until around 4pm!

The west facing resorts on the opposite side of the valley, stayed in the shadows for a lot longer. (Such as the TUI BLUE Suite Princess and the Mogan Princess). This may be something you may want to keep in mind, as it does stay a little chillier in the shaded areas.

Rainy Days in Gran Canaria on the south coast

There is a chance that some days may be cloudy (I had a couple). On average, there are around 3 rainy days during the month. I was unlucky and had all 3 during my trip! Other than my day trip where it was constant rain, on the coast it was mainly just passing showers that only lasted a short time.

Central and Northern Gran Canaria

The Central and Northern regions of Gran Canaria are mountainous. Gran Canaria’s highest peak is Pico de las Nieves, with an elevation of 1949m/6394ft. The mountains can be around 10c colder than the lower coastal regions. They also experience more rainy days per month, with an average of 10 during November.

I took a day trip into the mountains and it did indeed pour with rain all day long. Putting it into perspective, on the day of my trip, Taurito was sunny and 21c. While in the mountains, it was 8c and rainy. I wore 2 hoodies and shorts and not going to lie, I was cold. The majority of people were wearing jeans and full length trousers in these areas.

The day before, my guide said the top of the mountain was 0c. It may have just been a freak cold snap, as he said that Mount Teide in Tenerife already had snow on it, which was rare for that early in the season. (Mount Teide has an elevation of 12,198ft, almost double the height of Gran Canaria’s highest peak).

Can You Swim in Gran Canaria in November?

Yes, you can swim in Gran Canaria in November. It may not be as comfortable as it is during the summer months, but it’s not too bad.

Sea Temperature in November

The sea temperature in Gran Canaria averages around 21c in November. This isn’t bad considering the air temperature was about the same. It was a little chilly when you first got in but you soon acclimatised to it. I found that the sea in Puerto Mogan felt a little warmer and was more calmer than the sea in Taurito.

Swimming Pool Temperatures

This may vary from hotel to hotel. I stayed at the Taurito Princess, they have 2 main pools, one is heated during winter, one is not. The heated pool gets heated to roughly 21c, similar to the sea. Not awful, but a little cold when you first get in, especially if it’s on a cloudy day.

The second pool was not heated and it was FREEZING. They ran the aqua gym sessions in the cold pool. It was pretty grim until you warmed up from the exercise. One day I thought I had got sunburnt on my stomach (despite wearing SPF50 suncream) but no, it turns out the freezing cold pool water had made my skin go red!

Taurito is home to Gran Canaria’s only salt water waterpark. It is open every day during the winter. As far as I’m aware, I don’t think it is heated. The majority of the time there were only a couple of people in it at a time. If you can brave the water temperature, you’ll be able to enjoy the slides with zero lines! (It may be busier during school breaks).

This post is based on my experience visiting Gran Canaria in November. Weather can obviously be unpredictable. But for the most part you can guarantee slightly warmer weather than what the rest of the continent gets during the winter months!

METAR Reports

Airport weather stations throughout the world routinely issue METAR weather reports . Such reports are used by pilots, air traffic controllers, meteorologists, climatologists, and other researchers. They are published via radio transmission and on the internet. Turn off the heat and travel: Greece, Spain, Turkey lure tourists south | Taiwan News

Greece had a blockbuster summer tourism season, making a comeback after two pandemic years. The country in the Aegean remains one of the top summer vacation destinations for Europeans who are especially fond of its large islands such as Rhodes, Crete and Corfu. Tourism accounts for around a quarter of the Greek economy and about one in five people work in the sector.

Greek advertising campaigns focused on the country’s low prices and abundance of sunny weather — and perhaps it worked. Spending the winter in southern Europe or Turkey has been the subject of numerous German media articles since the fall.

Headlines such as “How to save on gas in the Canary Islands” in prominent German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and “Heating costs and working remotely: This country tempts you this winter” (about Greece), suggest an interest in fleeing Germany’s cold temperatures and high gas prices — at least temporarily. Some articles have gone as far as breaking down the hypothetical costs of heating in Germany versus staying abroad.

Escaping to Greece?

Following the disruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe since the start of the Ukraine war, the price of gas in German households is on average 173% higher than it was a year ago, as reported recently by Reuters. Not to mention, inflation in Germany is higher than it’s been in years, and although the winter has been mild so far, it can’t compete with Greece’s 250 days of sunshine.

To capitalize on this, Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias toured Europe last autumn, stopping in Berlin, Vienna, Paris and Stockholm in an effort to get Europeans to spend the winter — and their money — in Greece.

For Katja Haffenrichter-Kritsotakis of the Rethymno Hoteliers Association in the popular vacation town of Rethymno on the Greek island of Crete, this was essentially idle talk.

“Even though the campaigns were there and the minister of tourism did some announcements and marketing in this direction, the problem is transportation. From mid-November until around Easter we don’t have any direct flights from Europe to Crete,” says Haffenrichter-Kritsotakis.

“If the government doesn’t do anything in this direction, from the hoteliers point of view, it’s very difficult. You have very high energy costs during the winter, and you still need to have all the services available to guests.” As a result, the vast majority of Rethymno hotels will stay shut this winter.

Indeed, transportation to Greece in the winter months is an issue. Not only are current flights more expensive than a year ago, budget airlines such as Ryanair aren’t even operating in Athens this winter. The Irish company closed it’s operations at Greece’s largest airport due to what it considered high taxes applied by the Greek government.

It’s a shame says Haffenrichter-Kritsotakis, as the weather is great, and Rethymno, a busy university city, remains lively throughout the winter months.

Turkey vies for winter tourists

Swiss tour operator Bentour has also been targeting tourists in German-speaking countries this winter, and said that they’ve already received many bookings for Greece this coming summer, but that clients choose to go elsewhere in winter.

The company, which specializes in trips to Turkey for the German-speaking market, is also using the high heating cost angle to attract long-term winter tourists. “Now it’s time to switch off the heating, reduce energy costs and head out into the sun,” reads one ad campaign.

And so far, long-term vacations — trips of longer than three weeks — have more popular than expected, the company’s head, Deniz Ugur told DW. “Although we see about 30% fewer winter bookings than in 2019, ‘workation’ bookings have increased by about 70%.” Bentour counts anyone under the age of 65 traveling longer than 21 days as likely ‘workation’ booker — someone who has the possibility to work while on the vacation or combine a vacation with some days of work. Around 8,000 workation clients booked trips with Bentour this winter.

The most popular destination is Turkey, in particular Antalya. This is largely due to the flight volume and the low value of the lira, which means the euro goes far, Ugir explains. “Of course people choose countries where the costs are not so high and they stay for weeks, sometimes even longer working from there, so the price is a factor.”

Ugur also points out that Turkey remains a popular winter destination with retired people due to its excellent healthcare facilities.

Digital nomads still in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, with their pleasant year-round temperature due to their position right off the coast of northern Africa, have also been targeting long-term vacationers. Tourism Minister Yaiza Castilla said travelers over the age of 55 with more time and money to spend on the island were a potential “source of prosperity for our country.”

But aside from pensioners, since 2020, the archipelago has been targeting digital nomads and will launch a digital nomad visa early this year. Nelleke Meijer from the Netherlands is one of them. She never left the island of Gran Canaria after coming in 2018 for what she thought would be a two-month working stint. Meijer started an online community for digital nomads, expats, local entrepreneurs and remote workers in Gran Canaria. The group’s Slack channel has a multitude of information about housing, hiking and other outdoor activities, connecting anyone who signs up to the free chat.

She says this year has been busier then ever — especially at their weekly meet-up. “So many new people coming all the time of all ages and from all countries.” Most, she says, come for the weather and what they have heard about Las Palmas thanks to the community. Although the initial increase in remote work happened in 2020, she believes the trend is still on the rise. Many community members return year after year.

Meijer sees winter travel to the Canary Islands as something that’s also on the rise — even if they don’t stay long-term as she did: “There’s a lot of people coming back every winter. It’s another reason why I love this season, seeing all these familiar faces — and lots of new people, too. “

What is Gran Canaria Like To Visit

Somewhere South of the Spanish mainland, hugging the Moroccan coastline and boasting Saharan summer temperatures, is an archipelago of islands known as The Canaries.

Arguably, the most diverse and interesting of these is the third largest and second-most populous island, Gran Canaria. This is otherwise known as the Grand Canary Island.

A quick google image search will reveal golden beaches, rugged rocky coastlines, both volcanic and desert landscapes, resorts and cute historic towns, which can be a little overwhelming for an island only 602 square miles.

Which poses the question: what is Gran Canaria like?

The Basics

Gran Canaria is only one island and only part of the autonomous community known as the Canary Islands.

Officially being part of Spain, the official language is Castilian Spanish.

However due to heavy dependence on tourism, a large portion of the population can understand and speak English.

Many people also understand German.

The population of Gran Canaria is roughly 850,000 of the 2.2 million who inhabit the Archipelago.

The Canary Islands have two provincial capital cities; Santa Cruz de Tenerife (on the island of Tenerife) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (on Gran Canaria).

The official currency is the Euro.

This is, of course, all important information for visitors, but it does not capture the soul of Gran Canaria.

What part of Gran Canaria is the best?

With an abundance of varied natural and artificial sites, Gran Canaria has a little bit of something for everyone. Being only roughly 50 miles in diameter, it does not take long to travel between locations.

Staying in the colourful city of Las Palmas provides great connections and easy access all over the island. It also provides easy access to the beach.

The airport, and your most likely form of entry to the island, is located a little to the South of the city, but is well connected and easily reached.

Another place worth considering is Maspalomas, an LGBTQ+ friendly seaside town on the island.

Maspalomas caters well for English tourists, being the home of an English-language cinema and Gran Canaria’s only newspaper in English.

The town is well connected to Las Palmas and the rest of the island.

The town is frequented as a day destination for the 7.5 mile Maspalomas beach and access to the iconic Maspalomas dunes.

Lastly, at the other end of the Maspalomas beach, you will find Playa del Inglés, roughly translated as “The Englishman’s Beach”. This is a sea resort on the South of the island offering Gran Canaria’s most vibrant nightlife.

The beach itself is a glorious stretch of golden sand. The resort is a popular choice for holidaymakers who do not wish to stay in Las Palmas itself.

So what is Gran Canaria like to visit as a tourist? What is there to do? Where are these sites? What makes this place so unique?

The best places… for nature lovers

Gran Canaria is only a 93 mile stone’s throw away from Northern Africa. This is immediately visible when you first lay your eyes upon the Maspalomas Dunes.

Here, you can lose yourself in vast sandy landscapes, all within sight of civilisation.

When it gets too warm, you can easily meander down to the Playa Maspalomas to cool-down in the Atlantic.

Another must for the nature buffs is the hiking around and up to the Roque Nublo.

Winding through the area around this volcanic crag are a multitude of hiking trails for all difficulties, ranging from short loops to whole day treks.

For those who are nervous about longer hikes but still want to see the rock, it is possible to drive almost the entire way, albeit on roads which are best traversed in better weather.

The finest panorama of the entire island is atop the Pico de las Nieves. Standing proudly at 1949 metres above sea level, here are the best views of the entire island.

Again, it is possible to drive almost all the way to the top for those who don’t want to feel their feet aching for the rest of the holiday.

The best places… for topping up your tan

Being a small island in the middle of the ocean, Gran Canaria has no shortage of golden sand beaches. This is perfect for those who want to return home with jealousy-inducing tans and for those parents who want to relax while the kids are also entertained.

One of the most famous is Amadores Beach. Next to the calm clear water, you will find all the amenities you could ask for at a public beach.

If you are staying in Las Palmas, the Playa de Las Canteras is right on your doorstep. The beach is generally recognised as one of the best urban beaches in all of Spain.

Popular with both tourists and locals, the iconic beach is a must for anybody visiting the island.

If you want to get away from the more popular spots, consider visiting Puerto de Mogan; a popular market and resort.

While it is difficult to completely escape the crowds on such a small island, the lagoon and attached beach are considerably more peaceful than Amadores or Las Canteras. It is well worth a day trip, even for those staying elsewhere.

The best places… for gluttonous local eating

Eating out in Gran Canaria is reasonably priced, though like any tourist hub, is not exactly cheap.

The smaller and more local restaurants are of course more affordable than the luxurious hotel restaurants on the seafront, though that comes at the potential cost of a translated menu.

According to budgetyourtrip.com, the average traveller spends 27€ a day on meals. The average price of a half-litre of draught beer is roughly 2,50€.

This is generally cheaper than the Spanish mainland, but growing interest in The Canaries as a tourist destination is rapidly inflating these prices.

The local cuisine focuses largely on fresh, high quality and locally sourced ingredients.

The style is a blend of Northern African cuisine and Spanish cuisine. This makes sense due to the the island’s geographical location and political structure.

If you want to find the best ingredients, to cook with at your guesthouse, for example, there is a huge marketplace called Mercado Agricola in the South of the island, where local vendors and farmers sell their produce.

Las Palmas, being the main city of the island, boasts the most restaurants of both local and international cuisine.

It is easy to lose track of time watching the sunset from one of the many open terraces or beachside restaurants.

Make sure you try the local potatoes; the nutrition-rich volcanic soil creates some uniquely flavoured spuds.

After the Spanish conquests, the Canary Islands became a stopover for sailors en route to the Americas, who brought back the potato from South America. As a result, you will find local potatoes in many of the Canarian dishes.

The best places… for the culture vultures

Up in the hills, you can find the picturesque town of Figras; a small town made famous by a unique street called Paseo de Canarias.

This is a quirky street with a cascading fountain running down the middle and a thin staircase on either side. You may well recognise it from travel brochures of the island.

Just a short trip inland from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, you can find the small town of Teror. With a well preserved old town and a large display of original local architecture, the town is a snapshot into the past.

On Sundays, you can also find a local market set up here.

The iconic church of Arucas is also worth a visit.

The church stands proudly over the town of Arucas and the intricately decorated towers can be seen from many miles away.

Lastly, be sure to check out the Monastery of Valeron. Carved into the cliffside are a little under 300 caves and rooms which date back to the end of the 15th century.

Is it safe to visit Gran Canaria?

Just like most European tourist spots, Gran Canaria does have its share of pickpockets. Providing you use a little common sense, you should not encounter any problems.

Also, where it is less popular than Tenerife, prices on Gran Canaria are a little cheaper. It is also that bit easier to escape the bustling crowds during peak season.

Both islands have comparable weather, and for the most part, you can book a trip to any Canary island without worrying about temperatures getting low.

Both islands are very similar from a broad perspective, and you should not worry about missing out on nature during a trip to Tenerife, or compromising on nightlife while visiting Gran Canaria as both islands have something for every visitor.

For families who like “the package holiday” feel, there are plenty of resorts that will cater to your every need.

There is often no need to leave the grounds of the hotel, and often excursions can be planned through the reception.

Furthermore, the small size of the island means no endless car trips with agitated and complaining kids, and when they are bored of hiking in the hills, it does not take long to change the scenery and get them to the nearest beach.

What is Gran Canaria like for couples?

The island might well appeal to nature-loving couples, however, the resort atmosphere and busy beaches make it quite hard to get away and be alone without venturing deep inside one of the national parks.

If you are willing to share the romance of your vacation with every other couple at the viewpoints at sunset, of course, it is not a problem.

Also, If you are willing to stay away from the beaches and up in the hills, you can also find some solitude when the sun goes down and the tour busses turn off their engines for the day.

If you travel off-season, you are more likely to be met with some peace and quiet. It just takes a little tactical thinking and careful planning.

It is also possible to escape the holidaying families by venturing out after sundown.

If you are a couple who likes to party, the Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico are vibrant with nightlife, and you will find it very easy to spend a few hours soaking up a cocktail or two into the early hours of the morning.

Gran Canaria is a fantastic destination with a huge diversity of landscapes and activities to indulge in, from perfect sandy beaches to dramatic volcanic mountainous regions.

The small island is well connected by roads and public transport and everything on offer is easily accessible.

The island is particularly well suited for families and groups, although the huge variety of places means that everybody can find something that they enjoy in Gran Canaria.
