Benidorm is a popular Costa Blanca destination for Brits all year round. The main season ends in October, but with an average temperature around 10℃ warmer than in the UK, plenty of us head to Spain in November for a little winter sunshine. We’ve looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Benidorm, covering the last 12 years up to 2022, plus we’ve asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Benidorm weather in November.

What’s the temperature like in Benidorm during November?

The temperature is extremely stable in November with average highs of 18℃ and lows just 4℃ lower at 14℃. The UV index will be moderate at this time of year, so not something to worry about for the average person. However, if you’re going to be outside for long periods it’s worth wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses. Remember that bright surfaces, such as water and sand increase UV exposure.

Does it rain in Benidorm during November?

On average, there will be 3 rainy days during the month, amounting to 63.1mm in total. That’s broadly comparable with the amount of rain we see in England during the summer months, and would be considered dry. There’s a small chance that you’ll catch a thunderstorm during your trip.

How warm is the sea in Benidorm during November?

The water around Benidorm is around 19℃ during November. It will feel a little on the cool when first entering, but you’ll warm up quickly. Most kids will have no problem with this temperature, but those who feel the cold are unlikely to want to swim.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 9-11 December 2022 : The Canary

The renovated natural pool of El Perchel beach in Arguineguín

There is no avoiding it. It’s the second weekend of December and the Yule time festivities are pretty much the theme for all the events happening on Gran Canaria over the days and weeks ahead. The municipalities of Santa Lucía and Agaete are celebrating their patron saints’ festivities as well as a few other neighbourhoods around the island. The municipalities of Mogán, Teror, Valsequillo and Arucas are just about to start their seasonal programs this weekend, with their respective Lights-on events. Gáldar once again inaugurates “Flower Week”, a spectacular exhibition of large-scale floral arrangements this Saturday (well worth a little visit). There are multiple Christmas markets to enjoy including ones in Moya, the Hotel Santa Catalina in the capital, and the Germanesque Weihnachtsmarkt at Hotel Maritim Playa in Playa del Inglés. Winter activities and Christmas concerts, this Friday and Saturday, are also on offer in the southern neighbourhood of El Tablero. With just over two weeks left, it’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas!

Upcoming bank holidays:
Tuesday 13 December  • Local Holiday in Santa Lucía de Tirajana – Saint Lucy’s Day
Monday 26 December • Public Holiday in Spain –  Christmas, Natividad del Señor

Upcoming events:
13 December •  Christmas Lights-on, Agaete

AEMET forecast for Saturday 10 December 12-18 hrs

Blue skies and occasional cloudy intervals to start the weekend, as a high pressure system over the archipelago fends off any stormy weather rolling in off the North Atlantic, sending it instead up towards mainland Spain, though occasional and scattered showers not completely ruled out, from the west. Temperatures will see few changes, increasing slightly in highland areas. Light to moderate southwest winds, more intense on the northwest and southeast slopes, as well as at the summits. Breezes along the northeast and southwest coasts.

By Saturday there may be some weak showers, particularly on the southwest slopes of Gran Canaria. Temperatures rising slightly, a little more in higher areas. Light southwest winds will continue particularly felt on the north and southeast slopes during the afternoon. Breezes along the northeast coasts.

AEMET forecast for Sunday 11 December 12-18 hrs

Sunday will see the medium and high cloud tend to dissipate during the first half of the day and open wide clearings of blue skies during the afternoon. Temperatures unchanged or slightly rising. Loose westerly winds with breezes along the coasts.

In July 2019, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee added Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape to its List of World Heritage Sites in recognition of the ancient society of the Canary Islands, the roots of which stem from the populations of North Africa and which managed to develop their own culture in complete isolation for more than 1,500 years before the Spanish invasion and conquest at the end of the 15th century.

The archaeological sites contained within the Risco Caído landscape reflect the culture of the ancient peoples of the island, a unique process of evolution undergone by the Amazighs from North Africa who lived in isolation here until they were conquered by the Crown of Castile following several attempts and years of bloody struggle. The volcanic crater of Caldera de Tejeda surrounds this area, which exists within the municipalities of Artenara, Tejeda, Agaete and Galdar.

The Canary Guide

Canaries: This is your personal dream island

In-article:

Holidays in the sun: which of the seven Canaries is the right island for you

On the seven islands in the Atlantic – Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro – the daily temperatures rarely fall below the 20 degree mark, even in winter. In the big island check, we show which of the Canary Islands suits you best.

The one with one Links marked with a symbol or underline are affiliate links. If a purchase is made, we will receive one commission – at no extra cost to you! More info

You can reach them from Germany in four to five hours by plane: the Canary Islands. They are 100 to 500 kilometers west of the Moroccan coast and lure you with fantastic views during our winter weather – and top the list of quickly and easily accessible as well as safe bathing and sunbathing destinations. We present the seven Spanish island beauties.

Tenerife: The high-contrast all-rounder

With a length of 80 kilometers and a width of 50 kilometers, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. And that applies in many ways: the dormant volcano Pico del Teide is the highest mountain in Spain at 3718 meters and its traces of lava make the Atlantic island with the black beaches so special.

The mountains also contribute to the special climate: it is often cooler and rainier in the north than in the south. But what does cool mean: Even in winter the temperatures are around 20 degrees. In the summer months, the values rarely climb above 30 degrees, at night it is a pleasant 22 degrees. Never too hot, never too cold, that makes Tenerife a year-round travel destination. Tenerife shows how rich in contrast nature can be with its 40 beaches: from rugged cliffs and gorges in the west to a Caribbean beach in the north-east to the coastal deserts in the south-east and black lava beaches in the north-west.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a change, you will be richly rewarded on Tenerife – with beaches, mountains, whales and dolphins in the sea as well as one of the best diving areas in the country with underwater canyons, caves and grottos.

  • Hotel tip: Adrian Hoteles Roca Nivaria
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room with half board and flight from 873 euros per person

Fuerteventura: The beach and surfer’s paradise

It is the second largest and most easterly of the Canary Islands: Fuerteventura is only 100 kilometers off the African continent, which makes it the warmest of the seven islands – with its desert-like, dry climate. In December, for example, the sun shines six hours a day with temperatures above 20 degrees. The Atlantic not only shines in surreal shades of turquoise, but also with average temperatures of 21 degrees. Almost 150 kilometers of wide and light sandy beaches make Fuerteventura the perfect destination for beach fans who like to have their own personal beach.

Example: Sotavento beach on the Jandia peninsula, Cofete Beach or Playa Bajo Negro, which are considered the most beautiful on the island. But also water sports enthusiasts such as wind, wing and kite surfers and surfers will find conditions here that can only be found in a few places in Europe – from beginner waves to big waves to flat water areas and strong wind zones. The fact that a constant wind blows over the island is already indicated by its name, which means something like strong wind.

Conclusion: water sports enthusiasts will find paradisiacal conditions on Fuerteventura – from strong winds to high waves.

  • Hotel tip: Iberostar Playa Gaviotas
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room with all-inclusive, flight and train to flight from 692 euros per person

Gran Canaria: The island for explorers

Black lava, white sandy beaches and lots of green: The third largest island, Gran Canaria, is divided into a wetter, cooler north and a dry, warmer south by its volcanic mountains, which are up to 2000 meters high. Here is also the six kilometer long Playa de Maspalomas beach. It is the flagship of the island, where the sea meets the desert. High dunes of up to 20 meters stretch right behind the beach.

In addition to a number of sandy beaches, Gran Canaria also has the Monumento Natural del Roque Nublo nature reserve, which is good for hiking, spectacular cliffs in the north-west and pine forests on volcanic soil. Exciting destinations include the cave village of Cuevas Bermejas or a visit to a rum distillery on a sugar cane plantation.

Conclusion: Gran Canaria has a lot to offer – from varied beaches and wild nature to culture (example: Columbus House or Museo Canario) and parties.

  • Hotel tip: Riu Gran Canaria
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room with all-inclusive, flight, train to flight and hotel transfer from 933 euros per person

Lanzarote: The always-a-little-different island

Between volcanoes, lagoons, vines, surfing spots, black reefs and people made of cement: Lanzarote, the easternmost Canary Island, is 62 kilometers long, 20 kilometers wide and completely different from its sister islands because of its rugged charm. Although it has more than 60 dark sandy beaches on its mostly rugged coast and an annual average temperature of 22 degrees, it is not one of the classic beach holiday destinations. 100 volcanic cones give Lanzarote a unique appearance.

In the south there is a kind of lunar landscape, the Timanfaya National Park: a lava area with bizarre rock formations, huge crater holes and more than 30 volcanic cones. The Playas de Papagayo, which are up to 400 meters long, are also nearby. The parrot beaches lure with crystal clear water and fine sand. Inland lies the La Geria wine region, where vines grow in small hollows of black lava ash surrounded by semi-circular stone walls. In the north of Lanzarote, a local artist converted a former garbage dump in a cave system into an art grotto – with a concert hall, salt lake and blue lagoon.

Conclusion: Everything extraordinary is the motto on the outsider island of Lanzarote, which goes well with athletes, nature and culture lovers.

  • Hotel tip: Hotel Fariones
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room with sea view including half board, flight, train to flight and hotel transfer from 933 euros per person

La Palma: The volcanic island

The longest known volcanic eruption in history made the island of La Palma known around the world in autumn 2021: from September 19th to Christmas the volcano spat fire and ash. In addition to the new lava formations, there are also cliffs, gorges, laurel and pine forests, dragon tree groves, flowers of all colors and natural rock pools to admire on the third smallest Canary Island. Not to forget the caves at the pirate bay.

Due to its diversity, the locals call the island “La Isla Bonita (the beautiful)”. Anyone who would like to have a glass of wine or rum after enjoying nature, or perhaps a cigar as well, will find many opportunities along the “Ruta de los Vinos” wine route. There are also a number of beaches – but all have black sand. Attention: The popular beach of Puerto Naos in the west of the island was affected by the volcanic eruption and is still closed (as of November 2022).

Conclusion: If you like barren volcanic landscapes, green forests, good wine and black beaches, La Palma is the place for you.

  • Hotel tip: Esencia de La Palma by Princess
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room with half board, flight and hotel transfer from 700 euros per person

La Gomera: The hiking island

It is almost circular and with a diameter of 25 kilometers it is the second smallest of the Canary Islands: La Gomera. Hippies and dropouts discovered their treasures – fairytale forests, rugged cliffs, bubbling springs and entire valleys full of palm trees – long before an airport was built in 1999. The most beautiful corners can usually only be reached on foot. Because the wildest and most pristine of the Spanish islands in the Atlantic was recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 2011 because of its well-preserved ecosystems – plant species that have long since disappeared from the rest of the world still grow here.

This also includes the more than 1000-year-old laurel forest, which takes up ten percent of the island and, as an evergreen cloud forest with its ferns up to two meters high and moss-covered branches, looks like a primeval forest from a fairy tale book. In the southwest there are waterfall and cave tours in Valle Gran Rey, in the north volcano hikes to the beach. If you are fit, you can do the 140-kilometer tour of the island on the GR-132 long-distance hiking trail – which takes a good nine days.

Conclusion: The island near Tenerife offers nature lovers wonderful vacation conditions – from hiking and waterfall tours to whale watching tours

  • Hotel tip: Hotel Jardin Tecina
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room including breakfast, flight and train to flight from 647 euros per person

El Hierro: The Unesco Biosphere Reserve Island

With an extension of 30 to 16 kilometers, it is the smallest of the archipelago: nature conservation and sustainability are the dominant topics on El Hierro, because the island was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve more than 20 years ago. One of the many positive consequences: mass tourism is a foreign word here. Swimming too, by the way, because around 90 percent of the coast drops steeply into the sea, and there are only a few beaches. And the surf is strong in many places – and dangerous. That doesn’t bother divers, however, who can find a dozen or so dive centers at the southern tip.

Very close by are the rock carvings of Los Letreros, which were carved into the lava plates with sharp stones around 200 BC. The symbol of the island is the juniper forest El Sabinar with its bizarrely shaped trees that are several hundred years old. The most famous tree, however, is on the plateau near San Andrés: the Garoé laurel tree, also known as the Sacred Tree.

Conclusion: The Canary Islands can still be experienced authentically on El Hierro. The island is an insider tip for divers and those seeking peace and quiet.

  • Hotel tip: Hotel Parador el Hierro
  • Prices: 7 nights in a double room including flight and train to flight from 714 euros per person

    Malaga weather November

What’s the weather like in Malaga in November?

The mild autumn climate in southern Spain produces fantastic high temperatures of 20°C this month. The Malaga weather in November has a good deal of sunshine, but it’s the wettest time of the year and you’ll need a light jacket.

    Geographical influences

Malaga’s a popular tourist city in the Costa del Sol, on the Andalucia coast to the north of Fuengirola. It’s one of the sunniest and warmest spots in mainland Europe. The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea’s around 18°C in November and this helps to keep conditions inland very mild.

    Averages

You’ll need to bring a light jacket in November, and an umbrella will help you shelter if you’re caught in a shower. The average rainfall’s 100mm in Malaga in November but with an average high temperature of 20°C, the clouds are often broken up and the weather feels quite warm. Even the cooler days should see temperatures stay above 12°C. The sea’s inviting, at an average of 18°C, and it’s your last chance for a dip in the Mediterranean before the winter chills it. You’ll find the sunshine average is six hours a day, so remember to pack your sunglasses too as the weather in Malaga in November is much more pleasant than the UK.

Is Spain suitable for holidays in November: the weather and where to go

Cold and cloudy autumn days can ruin anyone’s mood. As a rule, at this time of the year, our efficiency drops sharply, and we don’t want anything but a warm blanket, a cozy chair and a cup of hot chocolate. However, to dispel such an autumn blues, returning interest in life, arrange an unforgettable journey into a fairy tale and extend your favorite summer for a few more days, rest in continental Spain will help. nine0003

    Weather

    Temperature:

    • Lloret de Mar +14..+21 (17 sunny days, 4 rainy days)
    • Barcelona +16. .+21 (17 sunny days, 4 rainy days)
    • Salou +14..+21 (18, 5)
    • Ibiza +16..+24 (14, 7)
    • Majorca +15..+22 (14, 6)
    • Valencia +17..+22 (18) , 2)
    • Malaga +17..+23 (22, 3)

November in Spain resembles the beginning of autumn in countries with a temperate climate. The weather does not shine with particular stability, on rainy and cloudy days the air temperature can drop to uncomfortable +15, which, together with the wind, makes you think of hot coffee. But in general, 50% of November days in European Spain are still sunny, so it is unlikely that during your visit to Spain it will rain all week. You just need to be prepared for the harsh realities of the November weather and have a wardrobe for all occasions. nine0003

    Water temperature

    • Lloret de Mar +16..+18
    • Barcelona +17..+19
    • Salou +17..+20
    • Ibiza +18..+21
    • Mayorca +18..+21
      • ..+21
      • Valencia +18..+21
      • Malaga +17. .+19

Beaches in Spanish resorts are closed in mid-October, so swimming in the sea is usually out of the question in November. Although the sea is still quite suitable for taking water procedures almost everywhere, the wind and often cloudy weather will not give you the necessary comfort for swimming. nine0003

      Weather features

Warm autumn with temperatures up to 23-24 degrees usually leaves the Spanish resort areas after November 5, when the first rainy days come. November is the rainiest month of the year in Spain, so you need to be prepared for rain at any moment. The rainy autumn manifests itself especially brightly after November 20, when the temperature in the resorts drops to 13-14 degrees, driving out the last tourists from there. Until that time, representatives of excursion tourism can be found quite often. The weather is conducive to walks, excursions and just relaxing at very low prices. nine0003

More sunny and less rainy in November in southern Spain (Alicante, Malaga). It is not recommended to go to the Balearic Islands in November, where, due to climatic features, there is much more precipitation than on the continent.

As for the water, in November you can still meet lovers of swimming, but usually these are short morning swims instead of exercise. Swimming in such cool water is not recommended, especially since all the beaches are already closed.

      Airline prices

November is considered the low tourist season, so tickets can be bought almost at any time at fairly attractive prices.

      Things to do

And if you are not afraid to “melt” in the rain, exciting walks along the Spanish streets and excursions to historical places and sights await you. The sights of Barcelona or any other resort are equally beautiful at any time of the year, but in November there are no crowds of tourists, long lines and many other “advantages” of the high tourist season. Another plus of a trip to Spain in November can be considered a large number of museums. Why? Yes, simply because, in case of bad weather, you can easily change your day plans and visit any of the museums. There are more than 60 of them in Barcelona alone! nine0003

Do you lack adrenaline and thrills? Then welcome to the Pyrenees, where you have a unique opportunity to go trekking. And not far from Granada, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, there are perhaps the best ski slopes in southern Europe (although you can talk about snow there only at the end of the month, and even then not always). Here you can simultaneously enjoy a huge adrenaline rush and a bewitching spectacle, trying on the laurels of a pioneer, succumbing to a new trend of extreme recreation – canyoning and mountaineering. Or, paying tribute to traditional types of entertainment, rafting down the river, as well as skydiving under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Due to the outflow of tourists, prices for these types of entertainment often become more affordable, but there is a risk that weather conditions will not allow them to do so. nine0003

Nightlife lovers should not be upset when they come to Spain in November either. The sun sets below the horizon much earlier than in summer, so you don’t have to wait until 10-11 pm to see the night city in all its glory. True, after 10 pm, when the sun has already disappeared below the horizon, the famous Spanish “marcha” begins, or all kinds of festivities, going to restaurants, bars, discos, when all the Spaniards go out into the street to drink a glass of wine in the company of old friends and, of course, discuss the latest news. nine0003

Holidays in Spain in November are a good reason to send your wife hunting in local shops. This month opens the “hunting season” for the summer-autumn wardrobe and jewelry. The fact is that November is the off-season period and total sales are announced throughout the country. This means that you can buy things even the most popular brands at very low prices.

As compensation for a shopping trip, you can ask your soulmate to accompany you to a football match. In the end, for women, visiting the Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabeo is a much more interesting pastime than visiting the fishing base at Akhtuba in Astrakhan. (By the way, November is the season for zander fishing, so if you don’t get to Spain, you can give up fishing.) Fortunately, in November in Spain there is good football weather and all the teams are already at the peak of their form. In Madrid and Barcelona matches of the football Champions League are waiting for you, in all major cities of Spain the national championship is played on weekends. Well, if you didn’t manage to attend a football match, look at the calendar of sporting events. There are basketball and handball teams in many cities. nine0003

The concert season also kicks off in November. Spain hosts many concerts of famous artists and bands. You can go to the theater or opera. All this is not available for those who come to Spain in the summer.

Another indisputable advantage of a holiday in November is very reasonable prices. It is this month that is considered the most economical, when the cost of purchasing a tour is much lower. So, the cost of a trip even to the most famous resorts in Spain is only 1100-1200 euros. Thus, even students can afford to arrange a small holiday in the midst of autumn, although for the most part these are students from Europe…

This month, the historical centers of Spanish cities and resorts are emptying significantly and peace and tranquility are returning to them. Sea water is not conducive to swimming, and coastal hotels are almost empty. For this reason, it remains for tourists to get acquainted with the cultural program and see the sights, that is, all that Spain is so rich in. nine0003

        Events in Spain in November

The Spanish beaches have become empty and quiet, but life in Madrid is still in full swing. In November, the International Jazz Festival is celebrated here. Performers perform in the jazz clubs of the Spanish capital for 20 days, every year this event is sold out.

A similar Jazz Festival takes place in Granada. The main action here takes place in the theater of Isabella of Castile. The framework of the festival includes over 70 concerts of various performers. Jazz lovers can also take part. nine0003

Since ancient times, the symbolic beginning of winter in Europe is celebrated on November 1, celebrating the Day of All Saints. In the city of Cocentaina, a fair is held in honor of this event. And on November 9, there is a good reason to go to the city of Baena in the province of Andalusia. On this day, Baena, which is the center of olive oil production, hosts the Olive Festival. During the event, you can learn how to cook dishes with olive oil, listen to concerts, visit an exhibition and a fair. Seville hosts the Film Festival in November, while Madrid hosts an exhibition of arts and antiques. nine0003

        Things to do in November

The weather is still mild and warm in the Balearic Islands this month. Guests of Mallorca can visit the city of Valldemosa and visit the Carthusian monastery, where Chopin and George Sand lived. A huge impression on foreigners is made by the building of the Cathedral, located in Palma de Mallorca. The age of Bellver Castle is about eight centuries; jousting tournaments are regularly held in it. If tourists are attracted by the secrets of the dungeons, then they should go down to the Dragon Caves, located in the depths of Mallorca. Inside you can take a boat trip. nine0003

        Belvedere Castle, Mallorca

One of the most famous holiday destinations in Spain is Ibiza. In addition to nightclubs and electronic music festivals, this island is also known for its sights. The Cova de Can Marka cave impresses with some incredible natural naturalness, which is combined with artificial lighting. Fans of an excursion into the past visit the necropolis of Puig de Molins, where the sarcophagi of the dead people of the Phoenician era are located.

Learn about walking in the Canary Islands | Slow Lane

Learn about walking in the Canary Islands | Slow Lane | Inntravel

Jack Montgomery, 08 November, 2022

Jack and Andy Montgomery know the Canary Islands inside out, having lived there for 14 years. Here, they give us the low-down on walking, making the tricky choice between islands that little bit easier…

Walking routes in the Canaries are like Daniel Craig’s Bond to mainland Europe’s Pierce Brosnan. On the islands, you won’t find many compacted gravel paths that are pristinely maintained and signposted at every bend. The rough trails that criss-cross the islands date back centuries to when the first inhabitants moved their livestock between winter and summer grazing grounds.

Later adopted by merchants transporting goods to trade or export, they largely consist of cobbled stones of varying size and chaotic shapes, as well as the occasional steep ascent and descent. Apart from the volcanic landscapes, these caminos reales (literally ‘royal ways’), are the one common theme between the islands.

Fuerteventura

Although arid and volcanic like its neighbour Lanzarote, Fuerteventura both looks and feels different. Its hills are softly curvaceous, their orange hues changing colour with the movement of the sun, while ravines conceal green oases. This is an island of windmills, goats, Barbary squirrels, and birds – ranging from Egyptian vultures to African Shelducks.

Terrain: Fuerteventura is ideal for walkers who don’t enjoy steep ascents and descents. Although the terrain may initially appear samey, it’s surprisingly diverse, offering coastal walks, green ravines, and Sahara-esque sand dunes, as well as Biblical landscapes. However, shade is at a premium.

Lanzarote

With barely a mountain to prod rain from the clouds, Lanzarote’s green bits are conspicuous by their absence. In their place is an island of stark beauty and strong sustainability practices, where buildings are uniformly white, and tender green vines grow in black volcanic pits and produce some of the world’s finest Malvasia wines.

Terrain: you’ll find yourself walking on lava just about everywhere you go on paths that are frequently sparsely waymarked. Leave the lava behind on the neighbouring

Gran Canaria

Wander away from Gran Canaria’s tourist beaches and you’ll find a stunning island with fabulous walking trails, sometimes described as a ‘continent in miniature’. Without a major summit to hog the limelight, this is BIG country with far-reaching views over multi-layered peaks and the occasional glistening reservoir, to mighty Mount Teide on its horizon.

Terrain: some of the best walking in the Canary Islands is to be found amongst the mountainous interior and alongside abyssal barrancos dotted with picturesque hamlets. Well-waymarked and mostly well-maintained (although some are in need of some TLC), paths are largely of the cobbled variety.

Tenerife

Better known for sun, sand and five-star hotels, the walking on Tenerife is surprisingly diverse. Far from the busy resorts, there’s a very different island to be discovered. Dominated by Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide, the centre is a vast volcanic crater surrounded by pine forests that morph into near-desert, volcanic terrain in the south, and lush sub-tropical greenery in the north.

Terrain: you’ll find it all on Tenerife – lava fields, forest paths, mountain trails, ridge walks and coastal paths, not to mention the route to the very top of Mount Teide, all well-waymarked and maintained.

La Gomera

The consummate walking island, La Gomera is lush and lovely. A tropical rainforest carpets her central region while pine forests, palm trees and dense vegetation abound. Deep barrancos (ravines) run from the centre to the coast, like spokes of a wheel, making La Gomera time-consuming to navigate at coastal level.

Terrain: well-signed and generally well-maintained paths set out straight from the door. All those barrancos mean lots of ups and downs on cobbled paths, so pack knee supports and walking poles. This is an island for vertigo sufferers to avoid.

La Palma

La Palma is one of our favourite Canary Islands for walking, but volcanic activity in 2021 affected some hiking routes. The island is once again tranquil, and hopefully it won’t be long before we can take to its beautiful wildflower-strewn hillsides. If you haven’t yet discovered La Isla Bonita, it’s definitely one to look forward to.

Terrain: paths cover every variety of terrain from pine-needle-clad to black obsidian and of course, those cobbled caminos reales. Away from the most popular routes, waymarking can be sparse and confusing but the rewards are empty paths through stunning scenery.

El Hierro

The most off-the-beaten-track of all the islands: wild, sparsely populated, rugged, and completely unspoiled – there’s something magical about El Hierro. Dense pine forests; volcanic cones; lava fields; moors grazed by long-haired sheep; and amazing sabina (wild juniper) trees.

Terrain: possibly the best-waymarked in the archipelago, most paths either traverse the central ridge or rise and fall from the spine to the coast and some are decidedly vertiginous. Plenty of steep ascents and descents warrant knee supports and walking poles.

Spotlight on The Canaries

We offer walking holidays on most of the major Canary Islands (plus the opportunity to visit La Graciosa – recently recognised as the eighth Canary Island), so use Jack and Andy’s advice to pick the one that appeals most. Whichever you choose, you will experience a side to this amazing archipelago that the vast majority of visitors do not.

Canary Islands: Tenerife and Gran Canaria

A fishing village on Gran Canaria.

Where to base yourself in the Canary Islands? That depends on what you want out of your vacation to the sun-splashed chain of islands and islets. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have well-developed resort areas, interesting sites, and a variety of beaches. However, many Canary Island aficionados claim that Fuerteventura has the best beaches. (More about that in an upcoming blog.)

Gran Canaria, the third-largest island of the chain’s seven islands and six islets, packs in almost half of the chain’s population. Although crowded, Gran Canaria’s southern coast draws families and surfers. Several popular beaches in the Canary Islands also have nudist sections, often located in the more secluded parts of the beach. Younger kids might comply but don’t be surprised if your teens suddenly have a desire to take a long stroll to the far end of the sands.

Las Teresitas Beach on Tenerife.

Tenerife: What to See and Do

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is a mix of steep, fluted mountains, golden sand beaches, and blue sea. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, there are historic churches dating to the 16th and 17th centuries as well as a $70 million opera house built in 2003.

The dormant volcano Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain with an elevation of 12,195-feet dominates Tenerife, part of the Parque Nacional del Teide. You can hike the many walking trails as well as ride a cable car up the slope for spectacular views.

Puerto de la Cruz’s Loro Parque is home to 3,000 colorful parrots, touted as the world’s largest collection. Kids like the colorful bird show as well as the park’s dolphins and penguins.

Tenerife Resort Areas

Some of the most visited beaches are on the southern coast. In popular Playa de las Américas, revelers party until morning, especially in Verónicas, a stretch lined with nightclubs and bars. Los Cristianos draws day trippers looking for fishing trips, diving excursions and ferries to neighboring islands. In the evening, the town bustles with nightlife. Kite surfers come to El Médano beach for the wind and the waves. El Médano hosts the World Kite Surfing Championships.

Amadores Beach on Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria: What to see and do

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Gran Canaria’s differing topographical features—coast, cliffs, sand banks, caldera—support microclimates. Sample some of these distinct areas by driving a winding road that leads from the beach, through towns to the rocky, moonlike pinnacle of the island, Tejeda, noted for its vertical formation, Roque Nublo.

If interested in archeology, reserve a time for a guided tour of Cueva Pintada, a museum and archeological site that can be visited only by guided tour. The remains of the aboriginal site are noted for its original rock paintings.

Gran Canaria’s Resort Areas

Maspalomas beach features a lighthouse, a large swath of sand dunes and between the dunes and the sea, an area of ponds frequented by migrating birds. Kids like the camel rides across the sand dune beach. Some areas of Maspalomas are popular with nudists.

Playa del Inglés with its wide sands and nearby shops is a good choice for families. Where the beach curves, you can find surfers as well as nudists and maybe even nude surfers. Looking for a quieter beach? Then head to Amadores on the southern coast for sunning, swimming, and relaxing.
