Excellent location of the hotel, 5 minutes walk to the market, 2 minutes walk to the Rambla. The rooms look like the photos, small but nice. The price is a little high in my opinion. An ambiguous decision to make a half-glass wall between the bedroom and the toilet. At night, turning on the lights (if you are traveling as a couple) will involuntarily wake up the person who is sleeping, as the bulbs are quite bright. The homeless crowd can make noise outside the window all night, but I don’t care much, I sleep in earplugs. The wall mounted jar in the shower with shower gel was empty. Audibility through the door is such that it is not closed at all.

We had a room with two balconies overlooking the street. If someone wants perfect silence, then it will come after 1 am and before 7 am, nothing drives on the roads. Vacationing together with my daughter 10 years old. Attentive friendly staff – settled an hour earlier than the check-in time, helped to order a taxi at check-out. Clean double room, everything in the room worked, our room had a beautiful side view of the sea from the balcony. Good promenade, within walking distance of the port and the beautiful old town of Alcudia (about an hour on foot). The daughter was happy with the heated children’s pool – she did not get out of it for several hours a day, there were hotel inflatable toys in the pool. In addition to 2 children, there is a large beautiful swimming pool for adults on the territory, there is an exit from the territory to the beach. Delicious varied food – well done chefs, in addition to the adult cuisine there was a children’s buffet, there were no problems with the food of the picky daughter. Given the fact that we were at the end of the season, the hotel was not completely filled, the territory was free.

British tourists could be fined around £650 if they break strict new rules introduced in Spain’s Malaga. The popular holiday region is cracking down on stag and hen parties.

Spain’s Malaga region is introducing new rules to control stag and hen parties. Many British tourists travel to the sunny destination for raucous parties.

Malaga already has some rules in place to control anti-social behaviour but the new restrictions will specifically target stag and hen parties.

Under the new rules, British tourists could face fines for walking around in the street without clothing or in underwear.

Tourists will also be banned from carrying dolls or “accessories that represent genitals” and items of a “sexual nature”.

According to the council’s draft, tourists breaking the rules will first be asked to stop by the local police.

If they don’t, they will face a fine of 750 euros (£658), the same amount Malaga charges for vandalism or bathing in fountains.

The City Hall source told local media: “The proliferation of certain types of behaviour in recent years, such as nudism, wearing nothing but underwear or carrying erotic items in public means that we have to introduce new regulations.

“Public spaces must be preserved as places where people can meet, coexist and enjoy their leisure time while respecting others.”

The new rules are expected to come into place in early 2023 as they have not been formalised yet.

Fines could rise to 1,500 euros (£1,300) if the offender is accompanied by a minor or a disabled person.

Malaga is a popular destination due to the ready availability of budget flights and sunny weather.

In June, Malaga announced that more police would be patrolling the area between 11pm and 6am.

New rules could also see tourists fined for playing loud music or singing and shouting at night.

Tourists have been photographed carrying items such as inflatable genitals, sex dolls, or wearing underwear.

In Benidorm, another top destination, a man was recently videoed cavorting naked in a puddle.

Spain’s Balearic islands have also introduced new rules to crackdown on excessive drinking in recent years.

According to events company, Last Night of Freedom, Dublin is the top non-UK destination for British stags and hens.

Prague also made the top 10 list while Benidorm was the most popular Spanish spot for Brits’ last night of freedom.

Stag and hen parties have become more expensive in recent years with eight in 10 people saying they found the cost “staggering” in a Hotels. com 2018 survey.

The survey found that the average cost of an overseas trip was a whopping £998 for each guest.

Heavy rain brings disruption as amber warning in place in eastern Scotland

Heavy rain is causing disruption with flooding on some roads and an amber weather warning in place in eastern parts of the country.

The amber “heavy rain” alert covers Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus and Perth and Kinross until 3pm on Friday, and warns some fast-flowing or deep floodwater is likely, “causing danger to life”.

A yellow warning is in place for a large part of eastern Scotland until 6pm on Friday.

Authorities said the rain will make driving difficult, with potential for reduced visibility and surface water, and conditions likely to affect travel on both the trunk road and rail network.

On Friday morning a lane of the M9 westbound was closed at J2 due to flooding, while in Fife the A92 was closed between the Parbroath Crossroads and Melville Lodges due to flooding and in Dunfermline, Halbeath Road was shut with diversions in place.

Regional flood warnings are in place from the eastern Borders to Aberdeenshire, with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency warning Aberdeenshire and Angus could be particularly affected.

There were 20 flood warnings and nine flood alerts in place on Friday morning.

People living in regions with flood warnings have been urged to plan any journeys and keep themselves safe.

Transport minister Jenny Gilruth said: “The Met Office is warning us to expect a period of difficult weather in parts of eastern Scotland throughout Friday, with heavy rain likely to impact travel in the amber warning area in the north east.

“The conditions could potentially bring disruption to the transport network, so it’s important people plan their journeys before they set off – particularly if they’re looking to use the trunk roads or travel by rail.”

Forecasters said that some areas of higher ground in the amber warning area could see a month’s worth of rain within a couple of days, with more than 100mm of rain, and even 150mm, possible in parts of the Grampians and Cairngorms.

Average rainfall for November in Aberdeenshire is 113mm, while for Angus it is 122.8mm, meaning that if these areas do see 150mm of rain, more than a month’s worth of rain will fall in the space of just a couple of days.

ScotRail has imposed some speed restrictions on lines in the east of Scotland until midday.

Network Rail Scotland said journeys will take longer today on the East Coast Mainline between Edinburgh and the Borders, as well as between Aberdeen, Inverness and the Central Belt because of the “extremely high rainfall” which  means train speeds need to be limited for safety.

Ms Gilruth added: “Motorists should make sure their routes are available, follow travel advice from Police Scotland and drive to the conditions.”

Chief Superintendent Louise Blakelock, head of road policing, said: “As an amber warning for heavy rain has been issued, we are urging motorists to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel.

“The Met Office, Sepa and Traffic Scotland websites have valuable information about weather disruptions and we would advise people to check these sites before setting off on your journey.

“If you do need to drive, make sure you and your vehicle are suitably prepared by having sufficient fuel, waterproofs, warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed and be mindful of increased stopping distances when braking.”

Hottest places in Turkey in November

November is a mild month of the year in Turkey, but you can expect rain. Along the coast, the temperature will be holding up around 20ºC – compared with 10ºC in London and lower in many other parts of the UK. But it won’t be sunbathing weather.

Perhaps a city break to Istanbul appeals. Even though the temperature will be a little cooler, around 15ºC, it’s a good time of year for sightseeing. 

Some resorts in the Mediterranean are hard to reach in November because there are no direct flights, but Turkey is an exception. For example, Jet2, Easyjet and Corendon all fly direct to Antalya in November, and fares are very reasonable. Pegasus Airlines flies direct to Izmir. But to reach Bodrum and Dalaman, you may need to fly via Istanbul.

Here are the hottest places in Turkey, but if you want a more obvious winter-sun option, I’d recommend you consider the Canary Islands in November.

The coasts of Turkey

The naming of Turkey’s coasts can be confusing, so here’s an explanation.

The Aegean Coast – also known as the west coast of Turkey, this stretches from Istanbul in the north to Marmaris in the south. It includes the city of Izmir, the ancient site of Ephesus and resorts such as Kusadasi, Cesme and Selcuk near Izmir and Bodrum, Gumbet, Alaçati and the Datca Peninsula. The best airports are Istanbul and Izmir to the north and Bodrum to the south.

The Mediterranean Coast – the most southerly part of the coast stretches roughly from Marmaris to beyond the resort of Alanya including the resorts of the Turquoise Coast and beyond it to more modern resorts of Side, Kemer and Belek. The best airports are Antalya to the east and Dalaman to the West.

The Turquoise Coast – this is actually a (particularly beautiful) section of the Mediterranean Coast which stretches almost 1,000 miles between the resort of Fethiye and the city of Antalya flanked by the Taurus Mountains. It includes some of Turkey’s most characterful resorts including Oludeniz, Kas and Kalkan.

One Portuguese travel agency has crunched the numbers to discover which hot destinations are really pushing the mercury this November and December. Any of these places would be perfect for a short winter break – perhaps even a Christmas one.

Visit Cascais – which reports that more than 8,000 Brits are currently searching for “winter sun” on Google – has also identified the closest beaches to each city, so you can enjoy the warmer weather in your swimsuit.

Heating up as it goes along, here are the top picks for sun-lovers seeking a quick Euro getaway this winter. Each destination shows the temperatures both above and below the water.

In November, all kinds of gastronomic and confectionery festivals start in the country . These events allow you to learn more about the traditions and tastes of Italians, as well as try one of the best cuisines in the world. At this time, truffles and chestnuts are harvested in Italy, and in honor of this, a grand feast is held on the streets.

Sailing across the Atlantic

Chris Tibbs looks at the best time of year to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the weather systems you’ll encounter along the way

Atlantic weather

There are a number of considerations to take into account when passage planning from the Canaries to the Caribbean, which may not be strictly weather driven and make it rather more complex than looking at routing (planning) charts.

What should be a principal consideration is the hurricane season which runs from June to the end of November. Leaving the Canaries during the hurricane season adds a high level of risk, however once we have reached November statistics indicate that any hurricane development is likely to be on the western side of the Atlantic or in the Caribbean Sea itself (between the mainland of Central America and the Windward/Leeward Islands). This has meant that yachts begin to leave the Canaries from early November. However the earlier we leave, the better it is to go south first, probably as far south as the Cape Verde Islands before turning west. This way we stay out of the most likely development area for longer, and if something were to develop we have an escape route by turning south towards the equator.

But why push the boundaries and not wait until the hurricane season is officially over? The popularity of a late November or early December crossing lies in a number of reasons.

Planning ahead

If we are doing an Atlantic circuit in one season, the earlier an arrival in the Caribbean, the longer a cruising season before pushing back to Europe, with the best time for heading back being the beginning of May. Boats also like to arrive before Christmas with some crew leaving to get back home for the celebrations while friends and family also find it a good time to visit. This again points towards a late November departure.

In addition when voyaging south to the Canaries, the earlier we leave the UK or northwest Europe and getting across Biscay, the better. I like to be across Biscay and into northwest Spain before the increased chance of gales in September. The Portuguese trades should be blowing giving a good fast passage south to Lisbon and onwards to the Canary Islands. The later we are in the late summer and autumn, the higher the chance of southwesterly winds and a hard slog to the Canaries. Even if leaving from the Mediterranean, we often see yachts held up in Gibraltar and southern Spain waiting for a weather window to get out of the Med and progress south. The worst weather often reported in a complete Atlantic circuit will be between Spain and the Canary Islands for yachts that have left it a little too late in the season to head south.

In 2015, when we last crossed with the ARC, we departed the UK early September (a couple of weeks later than planned), sat out a week of bad weather in Bayona, and arrived in Las Palmas mid-October having visited Madeira and Lanzarote on the way. I am not saying that you cannot leave the UK later than we did, just that you need to be prepared to wait for a weather window. In my experience most damage to yachts occurs when sailing to a deadline and not having the time to wait for a reasonable forecast. Often yachts will arrive early in the Canary Islands then either cruise the islands or leave the yacht in a marina to fly home until the crossing.

If we look at climatological charts (known as routeing charts in the UK and pilot charts in the US), which are the averages of conditions, the Azores high sinks south a little and ridges further west in January giving an increase in wind. This is confirmed by winds measured from satellite which also tend to show an increase in wind speeds as we move through December into January. This also ties in with the anecdotal ‘Christmas trades’, a period of stronger trade winds which arrive in the Caribbean close to the Christmas holidays and continue for January. Therefore if there were no other considerations, a late December and January crossing would give the strongest trade winds and fastest passage, although at times the wind may be a bit on the testing side.

The crossing

What drives the trade winds is the position and intensity of the Azores high. How far north or south it is situated tends to determine just where the band of the maximum wind is and hence the route while the intensity of the high and the pressure gradient determine the strength of the trades. The pressure gradient is shown by how tight the isobars are on a synoptic chart but as we are relatively close to the equator, isobars tend not to be as helpful as further north. So while the synoptic charts are very useful in showing the positions of features (highs, lows and troughs) we tend to rely on GRIB files to predict the actual strength of the wind.

The trades vary year on year and will generally be between 15-25 knots, however light wind years will see periods of time with the wind sub 15 knots while it is a rare year when the wind does not spend a few days over 25 knots. To add to this will be squalls which tend to be more numerous the further west we are, however a large squall can contain gale force gusts on the leading edge making it essential to be able to reef quickly ahead of such a squall. Although squalls can be seen and tracked by hand-bearing compass, radar is a great tool for doing this.

During the crossing we should monitor what is happening to the north as large, deep depressions in the north Atlantic can, and do, produce long trailing cold fronts that penetrate the high pressure, weakening and occasionally reversing the trade winds. These will be shown on synoptic charts and create an area of light wind where we are betwixt and between the strong winds of the depression to the north and the trade winds to the south.

Without any weather information, the traditional route is to head south towards the Cape Verde Islands where statistically the steadiest trade winds will be found, passing close to the northwest of the islands a more direct course to our destination can be followed.

This is the lowest risk in terms of having light winds or a period of headwinds. However we not only have much better forecasts than a few years ago, but we have the communication capabilities to receive them. We can routinely download weather charts, GRIB files, or specific forecasts and weather routing making a more direct route, following the great circle or rhumb line route, will be shorter and most likely quicker. There is however the risk that a trailing cold front will split the Azores high giving a mid-Atlantic slow-moving trough resulting in a period of lighter and more variable wind. There is also the likelihood of a northerly swell to make it uncomfortable.

The final option is a northerly route that can give a record breaking pace or leave us with headwinds. Using the stronger wind generated by depressions, this route can be quick and leaves yachts tending to approach the Caribbean from a more northerly position. High risk, high reward and worth looking at if you are racing and prepared to give it a go. One yacht I helped with weather routeing followed this northerly route and just when they should have been able to make significant gains, the yacht was damaged by large waves and too much speed. Crashing off the top of one large wave into a deep trough, the yacht was damaged, making this the end of their race and had to limp to the Caribbean under reduced sail.

For the vast majority of cruising yachts it is a question of just how far south to dip before following a more direct route across and this depends entirely on the weather conditions at the time. I have made this passage on a number of occasions and have been involved with the ARC for the last 15 years or so. I skippered a yacht in the very first ARC and 30 years later in the 30th. While communications and weather forecasts have improved tremendously, the principle remains the same. Skirt the Azores high by keeping east then south of it. There will often be a trough or old cold front mid-Atlantic which is best avoided by being to the south to avoid light wind.

Wave and swell forecasts will also determine how far south to go as nobody enjoys a cross sea from some north Atlantic depression.

Squalls are a fact of life and although just where they develop is not easy to predict, we can get an idea by using rainfall rates or CAPE forecasts available from some GRIB file providers. CAPE or Convectively Available Potential Energy is a measure of the amount of energy in the atmosphere and where values are high, squalls are likely.

A transatlantic crossing following the traditional route via the Canary Islands is a fabulous passage with days of good wind and nights chasing the moon. It should be a very pleasurable experience, whether crossing independently or with a rally. Personally I like the camaraderie of a rally, and there is a competitive edge, should you want it. After all, one definition of a yacht race is two boats going vaguely in the same direction!

Occasionally, they graced us with a nap in the evergreen trees in the daytime, which allowed me to capture this image,” says Lin Mcgrew.

February: Parrot

Spunky, smart, colorful and filled to the brim with personality, parrots always inspire smiles. While they’re perhaps most recognizable for sitting on pirates’ shoulders, there are more than 350 types of parrots in the world—and plenty of them live in the wild.

“I love this this bird because every single time my shutter would snap, he would pose. I took this picture at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska,” says Katelyn Cheek.

March: Robin

Fans of warm weather, brightly colored flowers and returning migrating birds adore the American robin. After all, many view it as the first sign of spring. To identify the March birth month bird, look for a medium-sized songbird with a red breast, gray upperparts and a yellow beak. Their sweet cheerily, cheer-up, cheerio song rings out on spring mornings.

“My husband and I were walking through the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden in Greensboro, North Carolina, in June. I saw this little birdbath with what I thought was a fake bird… but then I heard it singing! I love the colors of this American robin, and I absolutely love photographing these beautiful birds!” says Teri Quintal.

April: Canary

Perhaps it’s fitting that the bird for the month of Peeps candy is the canary. Some canaries live in the wild, but others, such as the domestic canary, are kept as pets. They’re not all yellow, either; some are red, while others are yellow and black. As part of the finch family, they are cheerful birds with a delightful song. To find them in the wild, you’d need to go to the Canary, Madeira or Azores Islands.

May: Nightingale

It can be hard to spot a common nightingale, especially if you live in North America (their range stretches through much of Europe). They’re elusive birds that keep to themselves, content to remain out of sight in brush or thickets. June: Dove

Symbols of peace and tranquility, birders everywhere love doves—and in North America, especially the mourning dove. They’re not the most graceful fliers, but they make up for it in song. Listen for their calming call, which comprises a set of cooing notes. You’ll usually find them feeding on the ground, or at a ground or platform feeder.

“This mourning dove let me get close to it in my backyard in Michigan. This bird was certainly comfortable and content. It kept preening and ruffling its feathers even as I kept getting closer and closer,” says Martin Torres.

July: Eagle

Eagles are regal birds. They’re fierce in flight and stunning to see, with hooked beaks and wide wingspans. In the United States especially, a bald eagle is a prized sight. Watch for white feathers on the head and brown plumage on the rest of the body, as well as yellow talons.

“It was a drizzly fall day on the Potomac Eagle train ride in Romney, West Virginia. I didn’t have high hopes for good photos, but I got lucky,” says Robin Bell.

August: Kingfisher

If you’re drawn to water, the kingfisher represents you well. The August birth month birds don’t stray far from water of some kind: rivers, lakes, streams or even swamps. You can find them throughout most of the United States, either year-round or during breeding or migration seasons.

“This is one of my favorite birds, the belted kingfisher. I was thrilled to catch this one perched on this branch. They are hard to catch up with as they are always on the move, but this one sat there for awhile and posed for us. They have such a distinctive call, and watching one dive into the water to catch a fish is quite a sight!” says Pauline Medori.

September: Hawk

They’re not always a welcome sight around feeders, but there’s plenty to admire about hawks. Resourceful and powerful, they’re striking as they hover in the skies or scan fields for prey. These birds of prey aren’t particularly hard to find, but since many look alike, it can be tricky to identify hawks.

“I heard the undeniable screech of a red-tailed hawk (above) while I was out watering my flowers one early summer morning. It didn’t take me long to locate this beautiful, noisy creature. Majestically, it perched on the highest peak of my neighbor’s roof. It was communicating with its mate, which was perched in a nearby tree. I was lucky to see their interaction and snap a shot as it took off and flew away,” says Carol Holliday.

October: Swan

Long seen as symbols of romance and grace, swans are beautiful birds. Swans mate for life and only seek a new one if their previous mate dies. These October birth month birds also have a fiercely protective streak; they’ve been known to attack anyone who gets too close to their nest! Three types of swans live in the United States; the trumpeter swan, the tundra swan and the (non-native) mute swan.

“This beautiful swan was stretching its wings out. The thing that stands out to me in the photo is how beautifully and elegantly the swan was posing,” says Kaitlyn Ryder.

November: Rooster

If you’re a morning person with a November birthday, it makes sense that your birth month bird is a rooster. After all, the rooster’s loud crowing often marks a new day. It might surprise some to learn that roosters are capable of flight, but not for sustained periods of time or across long distances.

“This brightly colored rooster (above) watches over his farm with vigilance and bravery. He scans the sky for any potential danger that may be lurking around and crows at the crack of dawn to let us know another day has begun. The rooster proudly struts around the farmyard as he protects his flock,” says Crystal Blank.

December: Raven

A staple of stories and legends, ravens have inspired humans for centuries. Although they’re often written as tricksters or even omens of impending tragedy, ravens don’t deserve the reputation—in fact, they’re brilliant birds that know how to use tools and can even mimic human speech.

“Although a flock of ravens is called an ‘unkindness,’ these birds appear to be anything but. They’re super friendly, in fact. Did you know that ravens mate for life? I didn’t, either! It seems these two birds (above) are a couple and are sharing a seed they’ve found. Now, that’s true love!” says Jill Conner.
