Zakynthos or Zakynthos – the island of poets, artists
and musicians, the southernmost of the seven Ionian
islands.

Here is the famous bay of Navajo, where lies on the sand
ship of smugglers; here on the beaches crawl huge
turtles caretta-caretta; here the olive groves interspersed
with orchards; here in mysterious grottoes
and caves hide ancient secrets…

To the beaches
Zakynthos come to rest and couples with children,
both newlyweds and the elderly. Azure sea, warm sand
and many entertainments for every taste make Zakynthos
an extremely attractive holiday destination.

Beaches and Sea Zakynthos

Beaches
Zakynthos is more than a hundred kilometers of sand and shallow
pebbles washed by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea.

The first beach worth paying attention to is located
in the Argassi region. It is located near the capital
islands, so the infrastructure here is well developed –
the beach is easy to get to, there are shops, restaurants
and taverns, sunbeds and umbrellas. The sea is shallow here
therefore, Argassi is often chosen for families with children.
In the evenings, discos are arranged on the beaches. nine0005

The beaches of Gerakas and Laganas come to lay eggs
giant caretta caretta turtle. Turtles are very important, offend
they are not allowed – it is not recommended to even come close,
if you don’t want to get a hefty fine. However meet
with a turtle in the water is also possible – they are people
they are not afraid, but they do not allow to touch themselves. More
in the waters near Zakynthos, if you’re lucky, divers might see
black seal is a very rare animal under
the threat of extinction.

Vassilikos beach is famous for its golden sand and long
a strip of shallow water is a real paradise for kids.
Kalimaki has one of the widest beaches,
There are also many water activities here. Hide
from the sun under an umbrella or in the shade of a strawberry
tree. The beaches of the village of Tsilivi were awarded the Blue Flag
for the purity of the water.

Zakynthos Attractions

Zakynthos is famous for its heavily indented coastline.
The sea caves of Keri, the arches of Marathias and the Blue Grotto –
incredible beauty of the place, which is definitely worth a visit. get there
you can only get to the caves by boat – they go
from the capital of the island and from Agios Nikolaos. ship
floats under three grandiose arches and brings you
into a cozy grotto. You can swim in the lagoons of the caves – water
rich in calcium and has healing properties. Maritime
The water here is so clear that you can see every
pebble. nine0005

The most famous landmark of Zakynthos, its calling
card – Navajo beach, “Shipwreck”. He is in
in the northwest of the island, in Smugglers Bay.
In 1980, smugglers pursued by the police planted
stranded their ship “Panagiotis” and fled. Storm ship
washed ashore, where it is still rusting.
The only way to get to the beach is by boat
he brings and takes away tourists according to the schedule. Beach
surrounded by sheer white cliffs. Leads to the top
long and steep stairs, but the climb is worth it – the view
opens just amazing. From here they like to jump
base jumpers with parachutes. nine0005

In the city of Zakynthos, it is worth admiring the St.
Dionysia – she can be seen from afar. The afternoon heat can
wait in the Byzantine Museum, and then walk
in St. Mark’s Square – it copies the famous
square in Venice.

In Argassi, in the suburbs of Zakynthos, go up
Mount Osprey – according to legend, the goddess of hunting lived here
Artemis.

Cuisine of Zakynthos

The signature dish of the island of Zakynthos can be considered “sarca” —
beef with tomatoes, garlic and special sheep cheese
“ladothiri”. Olive oil and all vegetables are local,
fresh, straight from the garden. Recommended to try a hearty snack
skorodostubi – eggplant and tomatoes, mixed
with olive oil and garlic. nine0005

There are several cheese factories in Zakynthos where cheese is made
mizithra – it tastes insipid, so it is served
with honey or sugar. Of course, you can easily
order both moussaka, and souvlaki, and Greek
salad – national cuisine is held in high esteem here. To coffee
which is drunk here at any time of the day, we recommend ordering
local sweets mandolato (almond, honey and egg) or pastels
(sesame, honey and almonds).

Where to go to the sea at the end of November?

👉1. Phuket, Thailand
🔸In Phuket in November, it is already comfortable heat and no rain. The elephants are still photogenic and the jungle is thick and green. The beaches are clean, sunbeds are almost free.
🔸In January it will be crowded and expensive, but now is a great time to get to know the Andaman Sea and smiling Thais.

👉2. Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam
🔸 Phu Quoc Island is very calm. Beaches the size of a football field, warm sea, cheap housing, seals rest and a minimum of scooters.
🔸If this is how you imagine your vacation, you won’t find a better place. If you miss the clicks of cameras and the touristy atmosphere, take the ferry and return to Ho Chi Minh City. nine0005

👉3. Goa, India
🔸This is not yet the India that bloggers write about, but the place is also colorful. And most importantly – in November it is hot and cheap here. An important point is the low humidity in November. This allows you to spend the maximum amount of time on the beaches and excursions, and you will bring home a lot of positive emotions and a beautiful bronze tan.
🔸And there are many big holidays in Goa in November – so no matter what week you come, you will definitely get to mass celebrations!

👉4. Bentota and Beruwala, Sri Lanka
🔸In November, all the resorts on the west coast of Sri Lanka are beckoning you to dive into the Indian Ocean and meet a surfer. Or surfing. In addition to water attractions and beaches, the island is interesting for coconut groves and tea plantations.

👉5. Tenerife, Canary Islands
🔸 The flight is cheap because the sea has already cooled down a bit. It is unlikely that you will be able to soak up the warm sea waves, but cheer up from the water and local prices – in no time. Suitable for lovers of European atmosphere and long walks along the coast. nine0005

👉6. Bali, Indonesia
🔸If there is heaven on Earth, then it is in Bali. Here you are guaranteed aesthetic, gastronomic, economic amenities. Nature, local cuisine and prices will drive even the most persistent crazy, and water extreme will drive adrenaline. 🔸
But everything is not so chocolatey: it can rain on the island in November. And they may not be. Bali in November is like roulette. If you love excitement and are a fan of walking in the rain, come.

👉7. Eilat, Israel
🔸 Israel has everything for a great holiday: warm weather, the Dead Sea and obscene prices. While in other resorts of Israel in November it begins to gradually get colder, in Eilat they rejoice with might and main with the bright sun and cloudless hot days. nine0230 🔸 The second main difference between this month and the previous two is the lowering of UV radiation, as a result of which the sun becomes less aggressive and softer.
When it comes to entertainment, Eilat has it all. And this “everything” in November should be tried to the maximum, as the weather has a predisposition to any kind of pastime – whether it’s exploring the enchanting tropical coral reefs, climbing Mount Sinai or a variety of sightseeing trips.

👉8. Dubai, UAE
🔸 Get lost among the skyscrapers, swim in the hot Persian Gulf, feel the benefits of civilization and spend all your savings – a typical leisure program in Dubai. But you can save money if you forget about the long shopping.
🔸This month, it is equally comfortable to sunbathe on the beach and swim, and attend numerous excursions. In addition, several significant exhibitions are planned for November in Dubai, which will definitely impress connoisseurs of beauty.

👉9. Aqaba, Jordan
🔸Therapeutic salts and mud, the Red Sea, coral reefs, diving, snorkeling, Petra nearby – only prices can confuse. And so – a great option for a holiday in November. Not far from the city there are coral reefs with clear waters, where tourists are accustomed to diving, spearfishing, scuba diving to the bottom together with an instructor.
🔸Wadi Rum is a desert north of the city of Aqaba, a popular destination for hikers. Sandstorms, hills, dry riverbeds – truly picturesque landscapes, caves, depressions, it’s safe to say that hiking in Jordan is the most popular type of outdoor activity besides diving. nine0005

👉10. Boracay, Philippines
🔸Budget-friendly for premium travelers. Bounty island with nice prices and lonely bungalows on the ocean. Boracay is the budget version of the Maldives.
🔸Sailing, tennis, golf, minigolf, horseback riding, bowling and many other sports, and of course diving, are considered popular entertainment here.

Best time to visit Cancún

Cancún is all that it’s hyped up to be – spectacular white sand beaches, high-rise resorts and a world-renowned party scene that spills from the nightclubs to the beach clubs. It has some unexpected gems too: leafy downtown plazas, festivals and holiday celebrations almost monthly, even a nearby national park and Maya ruins.

Add to that blue skies and balmy weather, and it’s no wonder Cancún is such a popular destination. Prices can certainly be high, especially at popular times like Christmas and Spring Break, but deals (and quiet beach days) can be found if you’re willing to visit in the off-season. It may be hot and there may be some rain, but it’s glorious just the same.

Low season: May to June & September to November

Best time for travel deals

Hot weather and rain showers keep crowds at bay. Deal hunters will find major discounts on hotels, tours and even cover charges. The sun shines most days, but keep an eye on the forecast and heed hurricane warnings come autumn. Even if they don’t make landfall, stormy weather can mean heavy rain, powerful waves and a damper on nightlife too. November sees the return of beautiful weather and yet prices stay low.

High season: December to April

Best time for perfect weather and around-the-clock partying

Sunshine, warm weather and a legendary party scene brings plane-loads of beachgoers and partiers to Cancún, especially during Christmas, New Year and Spring Break. Book your accommodation far in advance and expect to pay a premium during the holidays. The temperate weather is optimal for sightseeing and snorkeling excursions, while strong and consistent winds on nearby Isla Blanca are ideal for kiteboarders.

Shoulder season: July to August

Best time for nightlife and whale sharks

The heat and humidity don’t stop partiers, especially Mexicans, from flocking to Cancún’s beaches. Short bursts of rain aren’t uncommon, but the sun always manages to shine. Balmy nights also mean perfect weather for bar hopping and dancing ‘til dawn. This is also the best time of year to snorkel with whale sharks and to watch sea turtle hatchlings make their first journey to the sea on Parque Nacional Isla Contoy. Hotel rates drop somewhat from high season, but not entirely.

January

Cancún is busy with travelers on an extended holiday and the last of the Christmas-related festivities. Peak-season prices continue through the middle of the month. Expect perfect beach weather – warm days and cool nights – with an occasional cloudy day.

Key events: Día de los Reyes Magos

February

The beautiful weather continues but Cancún slows down. The crowds dissipate until Carnaval when parades, wild costumes, street parties and live music take over downtown, including at Parque de las Palapas.

Key events: Carnaval

March

March brings spring-break madness as college kids descend on Cancún – expect epic beach parties, top-name musical acts, and packed nightclubs. Inception Fest, a month-long, nonstop party, adds fuel to the fire. Hotel rates peak and the weather gets warmer.

Key events: Spring Break, Inception Fest.

April

Spring breakers continue to arrive. Hotel rates stay high through Semana Santa (Holy Week) when Mexicans traditionally head to the beach. Cancún also celebrates its founding with free concerts and a parade along Avenida Tulum. The temperature continues to tick up.

Key events: Easter, Semana Santa, Fundación de Cancún.

May

The temperature breaks into the 90s and the humidity rises. It’s low season – tourism slows and hotel prices drop – but that doesn’t stop Cancún’s vibrant and often raucous events scene. Sea turtles begin to arrive on the shores of Isla Contoy for the nesting season.

Key events: Cancún Jumpoff, Wine and Food Festival Cancún, Challenge Cancún Triathlon,

June

Hurricane season officially begins. Expect hot, muggy days with occasional rain showers. Tourist numbers and hotel prices remain low though Pride Cancún brings a weekend of rainbow-themed beach parties, nightclub events and booze cruises.

July

July is a scorcher but marks the beginning of Mexican summer vacation. The city is busy again and hotel prices jump up. It’s the height of the whale shark season too, which runs from May to September; local dive shops offer snorkeling tours with these gentle giants near Isla Contoy. Festivals feature everything from beach cleanups to foam pits.

Key events: Festival de los Océanos, Destination X.

August

One of the hottest months of the year, August also sees an increase in rain. Mexican vacationers continue to arrive so prices hold steady. The first sea turtle hatchlings make their way to the ocean from their nests on Isla Contoy.

September

It’s the height of the hurricane season, which means rainy days, few tourists and lots of deals. Mid-September brings Mexican Independence Day celebrations in Parque de las Palapas. Nearby, El Grito, the traditional cry of independence, can be heard at city hall.

Key events: Día de Independencia

October

Heavy rains continue in October but the sun typically makes a daily appearance. Cancún’s slowest period, some tour operators and restaurants close for the month. Major deals continue and the beaches are gloriously empty. Halloween is celebrated in the Zona Hotelera with alcohol-fueled costume parties. The sea turtle season winds down.

November

November brings a welcome break from the heat and rain. It kicks off with Day of the Dead celebrations in downtown Cancún and theme parties in the Zona Hotelera. Music and cultural events round out the month’s festivities. Tourist numbers remain low, as do hotel prices.

Key events: Día de Muertos, Día de los Inocentes, Festival de Cultura del Caribe, Festival Internacional de Música de Cancún.

December

The hurricane season is long gone and except for occasional nortes (storms bringing northerly winds), it’s perfect beach weather. Deals can be had until mid-December, when travelers begin to arrive for the Christmas holiday season, filling hotels and driving prices sky high.

Key events: Día de Virgen de Guadalupe, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Cancún

Playa del Carmen is a popular destination not just with vacationing tourists but with a vibrant community of locals, local expats, foreign expats, and nomads, too. Keep reading to find out what needs to go on your packing list for Playa del Carmen!

After visiting Playa Del Carmen on several occasions, I spent an extended period living there as a digital nomad. It was fantastic! So great, in fact that I have decided to move here, and it’s a place I call my home.

Because of the exchange rate, Mexico is particularly affordable for travelers right now. Many bloggers or people with remote businesses settle in this area due to its convenience, proximity to the US (and US time zones), and the incredible lifestyle available to its residents.

Canadian retirees move here between January and March to escape the blistery winter cold, while Italians and other Europeans flock to this metropolitan beachside town and start their own businesses or enjoy running businesses remotely.

Playacar Beach

In addition, Mexican nationals from other parts of the country such as Mexico City and Guadalajara also make the move to Playa permanently or own vacation homes where they can spend their holidays.

Playa del Carmen and the surrounding area is also popular for destination weddings and honeymoons.

No matter what draws you to this destination, be prepared for a fabulous experience with friendly locals, warm weather year-round, and plentiful experiences.

Beach

The Caribbean Sea on the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the biggest draws for sun-seeking travelers. It’s a gorgeous tint of aquamarine greens and turquoise blues.

This may come as a surprise, but despite how “touristy” the area might be, Cancun (45 minutes north of Playa del Carmen) actually has one of THE most beautiful beaches in the entire world. The bright white sand offers a strikingly beautiful contrast against the Caribbean water.

Deep V-Neck Cover-Up Maxi Dress

Tulum (40 minutes south of Playa del Carmen) also has incredible beaches that are less populated than its neighbors to the north and has become a major hotspot in recent years.

Playa del Carmen offers beaches almost as beautiful as Cancun with a more metropolitan vibe in comparison to bohemian, trendy Tulum. It’s the perfect base for exploring other beaches and the rest of the Yucatan as well.

La Blanca Multi Strap Cross Back One Piece Swimsuit

When it comes to the beaches, skin is IN. It’s not unusual to see Brazilian-inspired thong bikinis or European-inspired topless bathing. Since this destination draws a variety of people, you’ll see a little bit of everything. These are the swim suits I’m wearing here in Playa and other beach destinations!

When you’re deciding what to wear in Playa del Carmen, bring your prettiest (and sexiest) bikini, cute cover-up, sun hat, cute thong sandals, beach towel, and strong sunblock.

These beach sandals styles are a must have!

Mamitas Beach Club

A cost effective way to enjoy beachfront space without spending $300/night at a hotel is to take advantage of beach clubs such as Be Kool, Mamitas, or Coralina at the new Grand Hyatt. For about 500-800 pesos per person, you can get a sunbed or day bed, with the cost subsidising your food and drinks for the day.

Solo Beach Day in Mamitas Beach Club

Many people come to Playa del Carmen for a good time and the high season attracts music-loving people dancing to the DJs spinning in the beach clubs. Don’t be surprised to find a huge crowd and club music.

E-Initial Canvas Beach Totes

For something quieter, choose accommodation south of 1st Street or north of 38th Street. All-inclusive resorts tend to be away from all the action so these are good for a relaxed, quiet time.

You’ll find many swimwear shops on Fifth Avenue, the main strip, so you can pick up some vacation pieces while you’re there.

Bracelets I Top I Clutch I Earrings I Shorts I Sandal

Nightlife

Whether you’re visiting for a bachelorette party or you just want to check out the local nightlife, you’re in luck: there’s a party going on every night of week. 12th Street is the main nightlife hub with clubs, bars, and live music.

Billabong Teal Sundress

The local socialites dress to impress, but some places are more casual than others. When choosing things to pack for Playa del Carmen, if you’re headed to trendy hangouts, bring a chic dress with wedges and glitzy jewelry. For casual club hopping, you can wear a dress or playsuit plus pretty sandals.

Madewell Denim Jacket

Winter nights can be cool in the evenings so a light jacket is a must, especially if you plan to dance the night away at rooftop hotel bars such as the Thompson or Be Playa.

You can also shop for cute clothes in Playa, the local malls have high street favorites, such as H&M, Zara, Bershka, and Forever 21.

For added versatility, these are popular convertible travel dress styles!

Tank I Hat I Shorts I Handbag I Sunglasses I Sweater I Camera I Sandal

Ruins

Nearby to Playa del Carmen, you’ll find the famous ruins of Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s a super interesting place to visit, and the pyramid has some awesome stories and secrets (Just try and make it clap!)

Billabong Wild Pursuit Overalls | Shop on Amazon or Nordstom

Depending on the time of year, visiting the ruins can be mild and comfortable or an unbearable hot experience. The winter months between November to April are coolest with January and February even requiring a sweater on some days and evenings. The warmer summer months can get extremely hot after early morning, and there is little shade to rest under.

Try to schedule your trip to the ruins on a day where the forecast calls for gray skies or even a light rain. Ask your hotel and check weather.com to know what to expect.

Vionic Rest Kirra Sandal

To make the most of your experience, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes! The property is vast and in the heat your feet may swell–mine do.

Many travelers feel most comfortable in a pair of sneakers but for me, my toes need to breathe!

These cute and comfortable sandals are exactly what you need.

Old Navy Swing Dress

As for clothing, you can be comfortable without looking like you’re going to the gym. When you plan your Playa del Carmen packing list opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics. An airy sundress or breezy summer top with a skirt/shorts/light capris is perfect. Just remember the comfortable shoes and a sun hat!

Here are some fun and versatile beach dresses you can wear on and off the sand!

Chichen Itza – one of the 7 Wonders of the World

Some day trips to the ruins also include a visit to cenotes, so bring your swimsuit and a spare pair of dry underwear and a bra. A travel towel may also be handy to help you dry off for the rest of your journey.

The water in cenotes is always freezing cold but well worth getting into, even for a few minutes. With this in mind, bring along a warm layer such as a hoodie or sweater that you can wear after the cenotes or inside the air-conditioned coach buses or shuttles.

You can also head to the ruins in Tulum, or Coba, as an alternative day out to Chichen Itza.

Water Activities

Playa del Carmen is a fantastic year-round scuba diving destination. The dive sites are close by, which means you can do two dives in the morning or afternoon without eating up your entire vacation time. This is great if you’re traveling with a non-diver!

I recommend the Tank-ha dive shop for scuba diving. Not only are they my friends, but they’re a dive shop for divers created for the love of diving. Many other dive operators think only about business (money) first, so Tank-ha stands out as an authentic dive operator.

Red Bandeau Bikini

When planning what to wear in Playa del Carmen for water activities include your swimsuit, dive mask, polarized sunglasses, and strong sun block. Add a rash guard if you get cold easily (the water temp is around 75°F / 24°C) and your waterproof camera.

Sea-Band Wristband

Whether you’re snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, or going on ANY boat trip, take a motion sickness tablet or wristband! For some reason, the water is choppy enough to make people seasick easily, even on short, ten-minute boat rides.

Between the months of June and August, there’s an amazing natural occurrence of whale sharks migrating to the area. You can go on a day trip or spend a couple of nights in the beautiful Isla Mujeres to visit these gentle giants.

I love Playa del Carmen and it will always be my second home. There’s something for everyone: it’s the perfect place for an activity-filled vacation that will keep you coming back for more.

Where to Eat in Playa del Carmen

One thing to note is that the Mexican food here is not the best; however, the local seafood is incredible and extremely well-priced! Aguachilles and Los Hijos del Mar (located on 30th avenue) are just two of my favorite places to eat ceviche, seafood tostadas, or shrimp tacos.

The best places for Mexican food are El Fogon and La Ceiba, near the centrally located supermarket Mega. Delicious! The fajita platter plates at El Fogon are a must.

Due to the large number of foreign expats, there are a number of incredible restaurants with international cuisine, including Mucho Gusto (Argentinian steaks and the best gourmet burgers in town), Don Chendo (Chicago style deep pan pizzas), and Papa Charly (beautiful Italian food and the best breakfasts ever).

Be Playa hotel room (features a hot tub and balcony)

Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen

There are various accommodation options here including condos, all-inclusive resorts, affordable local guesthouses, and hostels. One of the most cost effective options are vacation rentals, especially if you’re traveling with a group or family or plan an extended stay in the area.

My favorite hotel in Playa del Carmen is Be Playa – chic, contemporary, well-priced, and awesome location!

For two other options, the Morgana Hotel is a chic and quiet boutique hotel just around the corner from the fun-filled 5th Avenue and The Carmen Hotel is a beach front boutique resort made for adults that enjoy a good party.

You can book well-priced vacation rentals using Airbnb and compare hotel prices on Booking.com.

Playa de Las Americas is a resort town in the southwestern part of the island. Here began one of the sea routes to America, hence the name. However, looking at Las Americas today, the name is more likely to be associated with contemporary American culture. Everything is very chic and on a grand scale: Hard Rock Cafe, a theater that looks more like a casino in Las Vegas, shopping centers sparkling with Rolexes from their windows, golf and tennis fields … Even on the streets you can hear more English (and Russian) speech – in a word, there is no Spanish flavor at all. nine0003

The city was founded from almost nothing in the 1970s, when tourism began to flourish in Tenerife. In the same years, the Aqualand water park appeared, and the Loro Zoo on the other side of the island was already actively attracting tourists from all over the world. Las Americas was built mainly for commercial purposes, and it is clearly felt. The place was chosen well, because in this part of the island the sun always shines and carefree resort life goes on as usual, while clouds frown in the north and in the mountains, driving tourists away from the beach. On the southern coast, it is warm in winter and not too hot in summer: the temperature in winter is not lower than 20 ° C, in summer it is not higher than 30 ° C. nine0003

The main attraction is, of course, the beach, where the azure wave caresses the shore. You can swim on this stretch of coast from March to November, the ocean is quite calm, shallow near the coast, there are no big waves here, as in neighboring El Medano, so you can safely stay in Las Americas even with small children. Particularly courageous Russians swim in winter. Although the ocean is always cool and warms up to no more than 21 ° C, it is still more comfortable to swim in spring and summer. nine0003

There are many beaches here – eight, velvety sand is brought here from the Sahara desert to delight tourist eyes. Particularly good are Del Camison beach near five-star hotels, Troya beach, where young people come to smoothly move to the bars of the famous Las Veronicas neighborhood in the evening, as well as La Pinta, a family beach where there are many children happily flopping down from inflatable slides in water. In general, the beaches of Las Americas are quite quiet. It is dominated by people of mature age, mainly from England and Germany, there are few street vendors. The noisiest companies on the beach are locals, not crazed tourists, as, for example, in Barcelona. Theft is common, as in other tourist places in Spain, the “lucky man” who fell asleep on the beach takes everything that is bad. nine0003

Tenerife South Airport is only 20 kilometers from Las Americas, which is very convenient. A taxi ride will cost 10-12 euros, by bus – only 3 euros.

Las Americas is the largest resort of the Canary Islands, while delighting with affordable prices. There are several 4- and 5-star hotels here, which often make great deals, as they have been strongly pressed by private traders who rent apartments and villas via the Internet. As a result, in a good hotel you can stay at almost the same prices as in apartments, but get European service in addition. nine0003

In the city center there is a huge park covering an area of almost 42 square meters. km. You will certainly enjoy the collection of tropical plants brought here from all over the world. In Las Americas, such a typically American sport as golf is developed. Anyone can learn how to hit the ball. And the beautiful half of humanity can, in the meantime, “shop” to its fullest! Numerous shopping centers offer a wide range of clothing, shoes and accessories: from basic firms Zara, Mango and Desigual to luxury brands from around the world – Escada, Prada, D&G and others. And all this is sold without VAT, as the Canary Islands are a free economic zone. nine0003

There is no shortage of cafes and bars in Las Americas: every evening you can have lunch and dinner in a new place. But do not look for tapas (they are not available in the Canary Islands in principle) or paella (it is better not to take it here). In Las Americas, all establishments offer a standard set of dishes at standard prices that are served in any resort in the world: pizza, pasta, burgers with fries, steaks. All food in restaurants is of high quality and inexpensive. There are also several Chinese restaurants and the ubiquitous fast food. Without trying Canarian cuisine, you can’t leave Tenerife, so we advise you to look for small restaurants away from the beach or even in other cities, for example, in Icod de los Vinos, where you can also buy the famous local Malvasia wine, or in the port the city of Los Gigantes with its good fish

I have already told in one of the articles
, how my friends and I chose a place to stay in Tenerife and why, in the end, we chose Las Americas. Now I want to tell you more about this resort town in the southwestern part of the island of Tenerife, having spent ten happy days there.

Full name – Playa de las Americas, something like “American beach”. It is interpreted in different ways, there is a version that a direct sea route to the American continent once started here. And there is another: the scientist and traveler Thor Heyerdahl allegedly proved that the indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands, the Guanches, sailed from here to America even before Columbus discovered it. I dare to offer my own version – it is very Americanized and standardized, this Las Americas, devoid of real Spanish, like any other, color, hence the name. nine0003

There is nothing surprising in this, Las Americas was created in the 70-80s of the last century on a deserted ocean coast exclusively for commercial purposes, as a major resort center of Tenerife. The place, protected from the northern winds by the powerful Teide volcano, was chosen very well – the gentle ocean, the gentle sun, and only a few dozen rainy days a year. At a time when the sky is gloomy in the north of Tenerife, and raindrops disperse tourists from the beach, the sun is shining in Las Americas and the carefree resort life is in full swing. nine0003

Here is the south of Tenerife!

You can sunbathe and swim in Las Americas all year round, especially in September-October. At this time, the ocean is warm, you can go into the water without preparation, since the water and air temperatures do not differ much. I was not in winter, but my friends showed photos and were delighted that they swam in winter.

And although the new Miami Beach was not built here, but what happened looks great: beautiful hotels (although not always new), among them several five-star hotels, an airport twenty kilometers away, some beaches with gray volcanic sand are covered with imported from the Sahara with the usual light yellow. And a lot of shops, restaurants, discos, nightclubs, bars and concert venues – all of this is in abundance in Las Americas, so tour operators usually recommend the resort to lovers of noisy, “party” rest. But at the same time, Las Americas is considered a resort in the Canaries with moderate, “democratic” prices, although today it is the largest resort in the Canaries, which also has the most developed infrastructure. nine0003

There are as many as eight beaches in Las Americas, you can choose for every taste, I’ll tell you about the largest ones here. El Camison beach is considered aristocratic, there are five-star hotels nearby. The sand is yellow, among the features are picturesque lawns under palm trees, on which tourists “rest from a beach holiday.” For those who want to get “from the ball to the ship”, I recommend the vast Troya Beach – it is located next to the noisiest area of the resort – Las Veronicas, the center of youth entertainment. And finally, La Pinta beach is small, but technically equipped, as they say, “to the teeth”. Inflatable “water slides” and other attractions, where you can constantly hear the enthusiastic children’s squeal, are adjacent to the sports port – yachts, catamarans, and intricately decorated sailboats go on pleasure trips from here. Seeing a flock of dolphins or even a whale from a pleasure boat is a common thing. nine0003

It is worth saying that the neighboring town of Los Cristianos smoothly and imperceptibly merged into Las Americas, so it is useless to look for the border between them. Returning to the topic of beaches, I can confidently recommend the best beach in this part of Tenerife – Las Vistas. It is huge, with relatively light sand, smooth entry into the ocean, moderate waves thanks to breakwaters. In addition, next to it there are various cafes, shops, McDonald’s, you can rent a sun lounger and an umbrella.

Las Americas, as mentioned above, is the center of “party” tourism, on some resources on the Internet you can even find the statement that there is a year-round “non-stop party”. This is not entirely true, in my opinion, especially if you have been to Ibiza, Marmaris, Bodrum, and at least Salou or Mallorca. The area of Las Veronicas already mentioned by me, where bars, discos, nightclubs are located literally “one on one”, during the day turns into an ordinary, nothing special, interesting street. And in the evening, I would not say that a row of several dozen bars can be called a party-goer’s dream. The contingent mainly consists of freak-like European youngsters, and there are also emigrants who brazenly steal valuables. For example, our camera was stolen from us – they just pulled it out of the case (therefore, there are no pictures from the breed on bar street). nine0003

But if a noisy holiday tires you, you can slowly, on foot, following the coast to the north, get over …. to another resort. We are talking about Los Cristianos. Physically, the border is imperceptible, one city just smoothly “flows” into another. But administratively, these are two different resorts, which is noticeable both in terms of the setting (Los Cristianos is much quieter) and the prices in restaurants and cafes (they are higher here). In general, Los Cristianos is considered an aristocratic resort.

In general, the “youth-party theme” in relation to Las Americas, I think, is a little overblown. Yes, there is one green street with faceless discos, but because of it it is difficult to call Las Americas the center of the party. However, when choosing a hotel in this resort, make sure that it is not located next to the street of bars, otherwise you will have to endure loud music and screaming drunken Europeans who go back and forth in droves. nine0003

Elderly tourists also come to Las Americas, many pensioners from England and Germany, who sit in friendly groups in restaurants and occupy hotel pools during the day. And the entertainment area of the resort is by no means limited to revelry on Las Veronicas – in Las Americas there are other entertainments and places to relax, for example, in the Central Park of Arona, which occupies an area of almost 42 square kilometers in the city center. Here you will find playgrounds and a collection of tropical plants brought here from all over the world. “Targeted” tourists – lovers of diving, surfing, golf can always find entertainment to their liking here. There is also a casino. Girls disappear in the evenings in shops, because the prices in Tenerife are without VAT, the choice is large, especially Spanish brands of clothing and cosmetics. nine0003

And finally, about nutrition. There is no shortage of restaurants and cafes, in some places, such as, for example, along La Pinta beach, they simply represent one continuous strip. There are always free places, prices are quite moderate. But in most places you should not look for local cuisine. Most likely, you will be offered the same as in most resorts around the world – steaks with fries, mediocre paella, the ubiquitous pizza, that is, what is called “standard food for standard money.” If you want to try real Canarian cuisine, then look for restaurants off the beach. Then you will definitely never forget the aroma and taste of a real paella with seafood, which will be prepared especially for you! Gazpacho, rabbit, Canarian potatoes with special sauces, octopus – these are just a few of the must-try things in Tenerife. nine0003

As a result, I can recommend choosing hotels near the Las Vistas beach. In this case, you will get the opportunity to relax on a beautiful beach, and the noisier center of Las Americas can be visited at least every day: 5 minutes by taxi or about half an hour on foot. Those who have been to party resorts will understand me)))))

How to get to Playa de las Americas

Playa de las Americas is one of the three most popular resorts in Tenerife. Along with neighboring Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas has a highly developed tourist infrastructure with a huge hotel base, all kinds of entertainment and a lot of attractions. The climate of Playa de las Americas is such that the holiday season here lasts all year round, it is equally comfortable to swim here both in winter and in summer, and all because the resort is located on the southern tip of the island, which is sheltered by a mountain range from winds and precipitation, except Moreover, the ocean here is much calmer than in the northern part of Tenerife. Many rightly consider Playa de las Americas to be a “paradise” where you can hide from the harsh Russian winter.
nine0003

The resort of Playa de las Americas is located 18 km from the international airport of arrival and is adjacent to such resorts as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, so you can safely search for the right hotel in all three resorts. They are interconnected by a single infrastructure and have the same access to entertainment. The cheapest way to get from the airport to Playa de las Americas is to use the company’s bus

You can also get to the resort by taxi (public transport does not work around the clock). You can catch a taxi at the exit from the arrival terminal, or you can order an individual transfer in advance, then the driver with the car will already be waiting for you by the time of arrival. You can order a taxi transfer from South Airport to Playa de las Americas on specialized services for booking transfer services, such as

and others. Travel time by taxi will be no more than 20 minutes. Taxi is relevant if you are traveling with a lot of luggage, or stay on the island at night.
nine0003

Hotels Playa de las Americas

The hotel base of Playa de las Americas is new and modern. Here you can find accommodation for every taste and budget – hotels of all star categories (with a large predominance of 4 * and 5 *), apartments, guest houses, bed and breakfast hotels, hostels, vacation homes, country houses, villas . The resort has a lot of chain hotels, as well as hotels with an organized area for entertainment (outdoor pools, bars, restaurants, playgrounds, animation). Independent tourists also often opt for apartments; this type of accommodation is quite popular in the resort. As a rule, renting an apartment in Playa de las Americas is cheaper than staying in a hotel room. The apartments themselves have an equipped kitchen area and one or more bedrooms. There is no food in the apartments, this issue falls on the shoulders of the traveler.
nine0003

Finding the right hotel in Playa de las Américas is easy. there are accommodation options in any price category and any star rating from the most budget hotels to luxurious and private ones. Speaking of privacy, when choosing a hotel, it is recommended to pay attention to the inscription in the name of the hotel “Adults only”. If there is such an inscription, it means that the hotel is intended for adults without children.

As a rule, most hotels in Playa de las Americas are equipped with their own resources for swimming – pools, however, if the presence of the ocean nearby is categorical for you, then when choosing a hotel, you should pay attention to the remoteness of the hotel from the coastline. By the way, all the beaches in Tenerife are free and accessible to any vacationer. In Tenerife, and in Spain as a whole, private beach areas belonging to individual hotels are not practiced. On the other hand, sunbeds, umbrellas, deck chairs and other equipment can be provided for an additional fee.
nine0003

For a family holiday, you should choose hotels with children’s playgrounds, there are many of them in Playa de las Americas:

  • For example, in a hotel
    h20 Las Palmeras 4*
    has family rooms, three outdoor pools, children’s playground, animation and evening entertainment;

Attractions Playa de las Americas

The resort of Playa de las Americas is famous for its entertainment. In the nearest radius of the resort, for example, there are Aqualand water parks
and Siam Park
, which are equipped with the latest water attractions. So, in Aqualand you can find extreme slides, a zone for children, a family fan zone, as well as a recreation and relaxation zone, there is also a dolphinarium with colorful shows for the whole family. In Siam Park, in turn, there is an artificial tropical river 1 km long, a huge pool with artificial waves imitating the ocean and white-sand beaches, an aquarium with sea lions, various extreme attractions, etc.
nine0003

In addition to the classic water activities, the resort of Playa de las Americas is able to surprise with its natural attractions. To do this, you should go to the park Las Aguilas
(Jungle-park), where you can see the real jungle and the Amazon in the heart of Europe. The park is home to eagles, falcons, flamingos, parrots, orangutans, gibbons, lemurs, lions, leopards, jaguars, penguins, mongooses, crayfish, crocodiles and caimans and many more. In addition, various events are regularly held in the park, such as bird shows or fur seal shows. The park is open daily and all year round from 10 am to 5.30 pm. The entrance ticket for an adult is 28 euros, for a child – 20 euros. On
nine0087 Las Aguilas Park official website
tickets can be purchased at a discount. Here you can also buy combined tickets for visiting Las Aguilas Park and Aqualand, the cost of such tickets is 40.5 euros for an adult and 30.5 euros for a child.

In search of natural attractions that abound in Tenerife, take a guided tour or drive to places such as the Teide Volcano National Park, the Guimar Pyramids, the Hell’s Gorge, the cliffs de Garcia, the Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz . The coast will also delight with picturesque views, where white beaches give way to volcanic sand beaches, and open spaces turn into secluded coves. You can read more about the beauties of the island at
.

The beaches of Playa de las Americas are united in a single area with the beaches of the resorts of Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. In total, these are 8 km of the cleanest beaches made of volcanic sand (yes, you can’t find golden sand in Tenerife, the island was formed as a result of volcanic activity). All Tenerife beaches, including the resort area of Playa de las Americas, are free, only additional services, such as the use of umbrellas or sunbeds, can be provided for a fee.

The advantage of the beaches of Playa de las Americas is their location – on the south leeward side. Clouds with precipitation and wind do not pass through the mountain ranges located in the center of the island, so in the south of Tenerife it is always warm and there are almost no ocean waves. By the way, special breakwaters are additionally installed in the resort to prevent waves. Lifeguards are on duty on the beaches of Playa de las Americas, there are showers, toilets, open-air bars, and fish restaurants. It is worth noting that the beaches of Playa de las Americas are almost always crowded, because. the resort is very popular, especially among families with children, because. the entrance to the water here is gentle, and the coast warms up rather quickly. For waves and surfing, it is better to go to the north of Tenerife.
nine0003

All in all, Playa de las Americas has all the trappings of a first-class beach holiday, including well-developed infrastructure, plenty of entertainment and an excellent year-round climate. Restaurants, discos, bars – all this can be found in abundance in the resort, which makes it seem a little noisy and party-like, but at the same time, on Playa de las Americas, you can always find a modicum of privacy in hotels specially created for this.

Fuerteventura Weather in November – Will the weather be hot?

The kite festival usually takes place on the Corralejo dunes in November

November is pretty much a transition month – the weather is transitioning towards the winter season, which means that the temperatures will drop a bit and the wind will make its presence felt more than in the previous month.

  • Weather in Fuerteventura in November
  • Can you sunbathe in Fuerteventura in November?
  • Average temperatures in Fuerteventura in November
  • Rainfall
  • Sunshine hours
  • Sea temperature in November in Fuerteventura
  • Is Fuerteventura hot in November?
  • Things to do in November
  • Events in November

November is not as busy as the summer months; it’s actually one of the more quiet months in Fuerteventura since most people will wait to visit in December during the winter holidays.

Weather in Fuerteventura in November

Compared to October, the average temperature drops by about 2°C, but during the daytime, you can still expect temperatures of about 23-24°C, which will feel pretty warm when the sun is out.

The wind starts to pick up strength in November, which is why this is the perfect time of the year for the Kite Festival, which takes place on the beautiful Corralejo dunes in the north of the island. If you are in Fuerteventura in November during the time of this festival, we highly recommend you go and see the wonderful kites that the participants bring with them from countries all over the globe (see more details at the end of this article).

Can you sunbathe in Fuerteventura in November?

Although not as hot as during the summer months, November in Fuerteventura will still be considerably warmer compared to most places in Europe like Germany, France, the UK, or any other country in northern Europe.

As long as the sun is out, it will be hot enough to sunbathe even in November, both in the north and south of the island.

It’s true that the chances of rainy days increase as the month progresses to winter, so your impressions and experience will depend on how long you’re staying. If you’re staying for two weeks or more, you have chances to get one or two rainy or overcast days, but you’ll probably be happy if it’s warm and sunny during the remainder of your time on the island. But if you’re coming for a long weekend or a week you might not be as excited about the weather, which could be a bit more unpredictable in November. But all in all, November in Fuerteventura will still we much hotter compared to the rest of Europe, so if you’re looking for a warm destination in November, Fuerteventura is a very good choice.

Average temperatures in Fuerteventura in November

      Bohinj, Slovenia

      BED

The touristic tendency post-coronavirus, according to European Best Destinations, is toward traveling far from cities, away from crowds and stress.

“People long for freedom, nature, wide open spaces,” explains the organization, which is part of the European Commission’s EDEN Network (“European Destinations of Excellence”) working to promote sustainable tourism on the continent.

To respond to the needs of travelers looking for unique experiences in places free from mass tourism and to reconnect with nature, EBD just published its list of “Best Hidden Gems in Europe.”

“Be soothed by the wind caressing the pines, discover farms and artisanal products or go for a sporting holiday by bike, kayak, or hiking in the most beautiful National Park of Slovenia or escape to the Azores, one of the last sanctuaries in Europe where you can watch whales and discover a flora and fauna unique in the world and protected by the regional authorities,” EBD suggests.

This is the list of the 18 first Secret Destinations. To see more hidden treasures you can go here.

      Bohinj, Slovenia

      EBD

This year’s #1 Hidden Gem in Europe designation was awarded to Bohinj in Slovenia, a destination synonymous with nature, sustainable development and unique experiences in the heart of one of the most beautiful national parks in Europe.

Nestled in the Julian Alps’s Triglav National Park, “Bohinj is a destination regularly rewarded for its commitment to the development of tourism that respects both nature and people,” says EBD.

The European Commission awarded Bohinj the EDEN prize for best sustainable tourism destination in Europe.

Bohinj was also selected as one of the best sustainable destinations for hiking in Europe, one of the most beautiful sustainable landscapes in Europe and one of the safest destinations to visit in Europe in regards to Covid-19.

“The Alpine background of the Triglav mountain constantly changes and offers new timeless views,” writes EBD. “A final argument? There are 7,000 animal species and 1,600 plant species present in the UNESCO biosphere reserve of the Triglav National Park. Here, man and nature cohabit happily and tourist infrastructure follows the trends of sustainable mobility with minimum impact on the natural environment.

The Bohinj ski resort is one of the best in Europe, listed among the best value ski resorts in Europe.

Ilha das Flores, The Azores Islands, Portugal

      EBD

The Azores Island, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal (along with Madeira), is an archipelago composed of nine islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,360 kilometers west of continental Portugal.

“A perfect destination to reconnect with nature,” says EBD, “if you like hiking, flora and fauna, dolphins & whales watching, tasting local products.”

The Azores also was granted the EDEN Award by the European Commission for its commitment to sustainable tourism.

The island of Flores is located in the northernmost part of the archipelago and for that reason “is less visited by tourists and is a real paradise on earth for nature lovers and hikers. With its many rivers and waterfalls Flores is a perfect destination for diving enthusiasts, cetacean watching or canyoning.

Enjoy the natural pools of Santa Cruz, the beaches of Lajes das Flores and Faja Grande or swim at the foot of the Poco de Bacalhau and Ribeira Grande waterfalls,” recommends EBD.

The mountains of “Los Mallos” are appreciated by climbers but also by photographers and instagrammers looking for unique places in the world.

“Be sure to visit the 12th century Santiago church and marvel at its magnificent stained glass windows,” recommends EBD. “In mid-August, Aguero celebrates the town’s festival with street entertainment, theatre, music, good food and good wine.”

The old port and fishing town of Cefalu in Sicily, Italy

      EBD

Located on the northern coast of Sicily, about 70 kilometers from Palermo, the historic village of Cefalu lies in the shadow of a monumental rock that rises up to 270 meters in height that was already known to the Phoenicians as the “promontory of Hercules” and where the Temple of Diana stands.

“A perfect destination for travelers looking for authenticity,” writes EBD. “Come discover its medieval fishing port, its old town, its cathedral and the beach, which is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily.

The village of Sistelo, one of the seven wonders of Portugal

      EBD

Located near the Penada Geres National Park, 90 minutes by car from Porto, Sistelo is among the best hidden gems in Europe. This village of 300 inhabitants, considered one of the seven wonders of Portugal is also called “The little Portuguese Tibet.”

As in the Douro Valley, the green terraces of Sistelo have been shaped by human hands: the plateaus are used for farming. The harvested grains, mostly corn, are stored in “Espigueiros” granaries, raised from the ground so that rodents can’t eat the food. The corn is then ground into flour in the mills that run along the river.

“If you like hiking in nature, Sistelo is the destination for you,” says EBD. “During your stay don’t miss the “Cha da Armada” viewpoint which offers the best views of Sistelo and walk up the M1289 to Padrao and Porta Cova to enjoy exceptional views of the village.

“Brandas de Sistelo” is an 11-kilometer trail starting in the village and passing through some of the most beautiful natural spots of the region.

Sistelo Castle is an example of the cultural heritage of the region that, along with the exceptional landscapes, are now protected because Sistelo has been classified as one of Portugal’s national monuments and cultural landscapes.

Sirmione, located in one of the peninsulas of Lake Garda in the Lombardy region, Italy

      EBD

A fortress town from the 13th century with narrow alleys and spa waters, Sirmione is located on a peninsula on Lake Garda in the Lombardy region (90-minute drive from Milan), and one of EBD’s Best Hidden Gems in Italy.

Built for strategic purposes, the Rocca Scaligera in Sirmione is one of Italy’s best-preserved castles, with its own quayside that marks it as a rare example of fortification for port use.

Adishi, small village in the mountains of Georgia

      EBD

Adishis is an authentic, small mountain village in the region of Samegrelo and Upper Swaneti, in the middle of the mountains of the Greater Caucasus in Georgia.

Torquay in Devon is described as the Cannes of the English riviera

      EBD

Torquay is compared with Cannes or Nice on the French Riviera and acknowledged as “one of the most beautiful destinations of the English Riviera,” with its pleasant micro-climate, healthy air and warm winds favorable to the development of tropical plants.

Surrounded by beautiful beaches and stunning countryside, it offers year-round holidays and is a UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark.

TripAdvisor named Torquay as the U.K.’s top seaside resort.

Crovie Aberdeenshire, in the north of Scotland

      EBD

Crovie is a small village in northern Scotland’s Aberdeenshire region. There’s only one road and 50 houses facing the sea. The road is so narrow that residents must park their cars outside the village.

Why are they all gathered on this narrow strip of land facing the sea?

The reason is hard to imagine: Long ago, a wealthy landowner of Crovie decided to drive all the inhabitants off his property because he loved to see his sheep graze on his meadows. The residents were forced to take refuge on this small strip of land facing the sea. Some still live there, although a certain number of houses are now holiday homes.

Islet of Vila Franca do Campo Sao Miguel in the Azores Islands, Portugal

      EBD

Facing the bigger island of Sao Miguel, the main island of the Azores Archipelago, the Islet of Vila Franca do Campo is a small paradise, a single kilometer from the coast.

Situated opposite the town of Vila Franca do Campo, the islet is the crater of an ancient submerged volcano and one of São Miguel’s main tourist attractions that has been classified as a Nature Reserve. A number of the restaurants display photographs of Nicolas Cage, who starred in the film, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which has a number of scenes filmed around Sami, with many of the locals as extras in the film.

Portoferraio, Livorno in the Elba Island, part of the Tuscany region in Italy

      EBD

Portoferraio, located in the province of Livorno on the edge of the harbor of the island of Elba in Tuscany, is a well-hidden European gem.

The biggest city on the island, it has remnants of the island’s rich history that includes Napoleon Bonaparte’s first exile.

With lush pine forests and crystal-clear azure waters, the island counts more than 60 beaches, the most famous, Koukounariés, declared the third most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean.

      EBD

      18. Sorano, Tuscany, Italy

One of EBD’s Hidden Gems in Italy, Sorano is a centuries-old village that flourished during the Etruscan era, perched on a cliff and dug into the rock (like the nearby Pitigliano).

Sorano is also known as the Matera of Tuscany with its rocky villages and charming pathways through quarries, where taking a stroll is like a journey through time.

“Come discover the culinary specialties of Sorano, taste its wines and discover its local crafts,” invites EBD. “A perfect alternative for curious travelers looking for something different from big cities like Florence, Rome and Milan.”

Try to avoid long-haul travel and at most choose destinations reachable with a few hours of flight.

But Paris is one of those capitals that should be experienced rather than visited: mingle with the locals, go to the boulangeries, have a cider and crepe aperitif and shop in traditional boutiques.

      4 – Sofia, Bulgaria

A lively, sparkling and extremely stimulating culturally capital. Sofia is there third oldest capital of Europe, founded in the seventh century BC Its historic center is characterized by typical yellow pavements called zhaltite paveta, painted in this way on the occasion of the marriage of Tsar Ferdinand in the early 900s. Among the most important squares we point out Nezavisimost square (Independence square and former Lenin square), Aleksander Batenberg square and Narodno Sabranie square.

Among the attractions not to be missed we mention the Orthodox Cathedral of St Alexander Nevky (Hram-pametnik Sveti Aleksandar Nevski), characterized by an amazing dome covered with gold, the picturesque Rimskata Stena market and the gardens of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) where you can enjoy the spectacle of the fountains.

Between a stop at the base of Rakìa, the famous Bulgarian grappa, and a game of chess, find some time to visit the National History Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Alexander Nevsky crypt; in addition to the Orthodox Cathedral, visit the Cathedral of Saint Sophia and the Boyana Church, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

      5 – Glasgow, Scotland

Most tourists tend to prefer Edinburgh to Glasgow, but in our opinion the latter is the best city in Scotland. As Glasgow’s sky is always gray, it won’t be a problem to visit it in November – you will hardly notice any difference!
There are parks in each neighborhood and thanks to the abundant rainfall, trees and plants are generally characterized by a particularly lush green color.

In autumn the landscape turns orange giving one incredible natural spectacle for the eyes.
Another fun reason to visit the city is the Scottish philosophy of life: “It’s raining outside? Who cares, let’s warm up with alcohol!”. Rivers of beer await you …
Explore the city with the help of the comfortable hop-on hop-off bus and then set off to explore the surroundings on a tour of Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands.

All in all, a holiday in Lisbon is affordable in any season. The prices of airplanes and hotel rooms are quite low all year round, but in November, visitors can still benefit from the low-season calm and weather still pleasant temperatures. Lisbon is a university center full of young people who flock to the streets of the historic Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado and Alfama districts.

Attractions not to be missed include the Oceanário, the iconic Belem Tower, Sao Jorge Castle and the Monasterio de Los Jeronimos. Finally, do not forget to take a ride on the legendary Tram 28. To visit these and many unique beauties, we recommend the purchase of the Lisbon Card, which also includes unlimited and free access to the public transport system.

      7 – Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is one medieval alpine town, especially fascinating in the fall. The hills come alive with colors and shades ranging from sienna brown to crimson red. The cold temperature becomes almost pleasant when you are in front of a hot cup of melange coffee, perhaps accompanied by a portion of apple strudel.

It is time to harvest in the countryside of the city, therefore we advise you to taste the Sturm, new wine marketed in the autumn season. To visit palaces and monuments of interest such as the hilltop fortress Hohensalzburg, the Castles of Mirabell and Hellbrun, the Mozart House-Museum and many others, we recommend the purchase of the Salzburg Card, which includes admissions to attractions and free transport.

      • Average temperatures in November: min 1 ° / max 9 °

      • Return flight + 7 days / 6 nights from € 496,00 per person –

      8 – Marseille, France

Romantic, enchantress, with a very strong personality. Marseille is a city that makes you fall in love. From its large port, passing through the cobbled streets and the always flowered balconies, you can stop in a bistro or a typical restaurant to taste the specialties of the city and sip a Pastis de Marseille. In this period, then, outside the most crowded tourist circuits, you really want to move there forever …

What are the attractions to see? It is practically impossible to mention them all, but the most important are undoubtedly the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Old Port, the Le Panier district, the Church of the Vieille Charité, the Riva Nuova and the MUCEM. To save on visiting these wonders, we recommend buying the Marseille City Pass, for 24, 48 or 72 hours.

      • Average temperatures in November: min 9 ° / max 16 °

Known in Italian as Ragusa, Dubrovnik is famous for its ancient and imposing walls, location of some filming of the popular “Game of Thrones” series, which can also be visited through a highly recommended thematic tour.

But besides the walls, the city has much more to offer. The tour continues on Placa or Stradun (from the Venetian “stradone”), the real center that divides the old city in two, with its beautiful Onofrio Fountain, the Renaissance and Baroque palaces such as the Rector’s Palace and the Sponza Palace (which can only be visited from the outside), and most important museums: the War Photo Limited, a photo gallery that exhibits the collapse of the former Yugoslavia, the civil wars in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Maritime Museum and the House of Marin Držić, where he lived the playwright.

Also not to be missed is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin dating from the th century and built in the Baroque style, the Synagogue and the Church of San Basilio.

      10 – Valencia, Spain

Valencia is always a pleasant destination, where you can discover Gothic and Baroque palaces (such as the Reina Sofía Palace of Arts, Baylia Palace and the Generalitat Palace), Roman ruins and interesting museums, some of which are particularly suitable for families even with very little children. Among these the Science Museum and the Oceanografic with over 45 specimens of animal species (combined ticket purchase recommended), the Valencian Institute of Modern Art and the San Pio V.

The tour continues with a visit to the most beautiful districts of the city with the Barrio del Carmen with a purely bohemian style with its typical cafes, the beautiful Plaza de Canovas and Casco Viejo in the oldest heart of the city. Don’t miss some fascinating monumental attractions such as the gothic tower of the cathedral, El Miguelete, 51 meters high, ideal for enjoying a breathtaking view of the city, the Lonja de la Seda in the Market Square, and the Torres de Quart, once twin towers belonging to the medieval walls.

      11 – Belgrade, Serbia

A little European, a little Balkan and a little unknown to mass tourism: perhaps this is the beauty of Belgrade. Lying on the Danube and Sava rivers, the city has known a turbulent past but it is literally reborn from its ashes thanks to important museums such as the National Museum, the Military Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Nikola Tesla Museum.

Among the main monuments we find the Catholic and neoclassical Cathedral of San Michele, the Kalemegdan, the great fortress of Roman origin and then enlarged by the Byzantines, all to be discovered together with the Victory Monument, the Roman well and the Clock Tower located in the high citadel, then the amam and the Charles VI Gate in the low citadel.

To fully immerse yourself in the Belgrade atmosphere we recommend a walk in the artists’ quarter, Skadarlija, full of galleries, antique shops, bars and restaurants. Visit the Residence of Princess Ljubica and the Winter Garden. Last but not least, enjoy some healthy relaxation aboard the cruise on the Sava and Danube rivers. Really exceptional.

      • Average temperatures in November: min 6 ° / max 13 °

      • Return flight + 7 days / 6 nights from € 287,00 per person –

      12 – Istanbul, Turkey

There is no better time to visit Istanbul: in November the weather is still quite warm and sunny, mass tourism has already subsided for a while, flights and hotel stays are heavily discounted.
What can be better than admiring the Hagia Sophia in absolute peace and quiet?

Obviously the famous basilica is not the only attraction of interest. The city is rich in buildings and buildings of considerable historical and religious importance, such as
the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Galata Tower and the Basilica Cistern. Finally, to complete your itinerary, don’t forget to take a tour of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, one of the most important covered markets in the world, and of course treat yourself to a romantic cruise on the Bosphorus.

      13 – St. Petersburg, Russia

Considered the “Venice of the North” for the numerous canals and bridges present, St. Petersburg offers numerous attractions to visit and admire in all their beauty.

We start from Marble Palace, built in neoclassical style and with numerous polychrome marbles, we then continue with the Winter Palace, residence of the tsars for over 200 years, with 1.786 rooms and 1.945 windows, today it is also part of the Hermitage Museum (where you can find works by Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet). Then we find the Michajlovskij Castle (Castle of the Engineers), now home to the Main Academy of Engineering, once a real fortress wanted by Emperor Paul I, and the St. Isaac’s Cathedral, with its marvelous dome, among the most big in the world. Among the numerous museums we find the Russian State Museum, the Navy Museum, the Russian Ethnographic Museum and the AV Surovov Museum.

November is the month of calm before the New Year’s storm. The perfect time to relax without the hustle and bustle. We share our thoughts on where to go in November 2022.

      Southern coast of Crimea

Why you need to go: on vacation in the Crimea in November you can still find warm days. There are much fewer tourists than in the season, and this will allow you to calmly explore local attractions, forgetting about the noisy crowd. Since there are not so many people, vacation housing is much cheaper.

What the weather is like: is very unpredictable. A warm cyclone may come, and then the air will warm up to +20 °C. But most often in the region of +12 … +15 ° С, so you can’t go anywhere without a jacket.

Where to go : better to the south of the peninsula – to Yalta, Alushta, Sevastopol.

H things to do : on clear days it’s good to walk in nature: Cape Fiolent, Chufut-Kale caves, Nikita’s Botanical Garden (this is not Mikhalkov, but such a village). If it rains, go to the museums of Yalta, Sevastopol and Bakhchisaray.

      Sochi

Why costs to go in November : as in the Crimea, the flow of tourists subsided, leaving behind empty spaces for walking and favorable prices for accommodation.

What is the weather: quite warm, around +15 °C. There are few cloudy days with snow and rain. However, there is no snow cover, so it’s too early for skiing.

Things to do: you can climb mountains closer to Krasnaya Polyana, ride a funicular, engage in various sports, including extreme ones. There is a place Medvezhiy Ugol, where water from a mineral spring is offered (it is similar in composition to the famous Narzan). In the valley of the Laura River, there are open-air cages in which wild animals rest – children will especially like a walk there. From the Sochi classics – an observation deck on Mount Akhun.

      Ski resorts

Why you need to go: the ski season is just beginning, the majority of experienced and beginner skiers will catch up by December. And on New Year’s holidays, prices will jump above the mountain peaks, so we advise you to rest in November.

Where to go: Dombay, Belokurikha, Sheregesh.

When the season starts: depends on the specific resort and the weather conditions that will prevail at it. In Belokurikha, you can usually ride from the end of November, in Sheregesh – from the middle of the month. And with Dombay, how lucky: the season can open in mid-November, and a month later. Therefore, we all listen to weather forecasts together and after that we decide where to go.

Which resort is suitable for: all resorts are quite developed and offer pistes of various difficulty levels. Therefore, both experienced skiers and beginners are welcome there. Read more about Russian skiing here.

      420 offers in Sheregesh

      150 offers in Belokurikha

      340 offers in Dombai

      Moscow

Why is worth to go: New Year’s fuss has not yet come in November, and thousands of tourists are not yet walking around Moscow, thirsty for fireworks and round dances around Christmas trees.

What about the weather: everything is unpredictable. There may be minus temperatures with snow, or the sun may shine up to +10 °C. However, the main thing is that there are no severe frosts, and the conditions for walking are quite comfortable.

What to do: while there are not so many tourists, you can without any inconvenience go around all Moscow sights, walk along Red Square on the day of the October Revolution (which, we recall, happened in November), buy warm souvenirs on the Arbat, warm up in the capital’s restaurants and cafe.

      St.

      Petersburg

Why you need to go: because this is St. Petersburg and you should always go here as long as you have free time and money.

How is the weather: cloudy + all kinds of rain and sleet. However, if they run from other cities from such weather, then on the contrary they go to St. Petersburg for such weather, because it has become part of the city, its peculiar attraction.

Where to go: Rest in November is a great time to visit St. Petersburg museums: you can see unique exhibits and warm up properly. Although, upon leaving the Hermitage, there is an option to take a chance and take a walk along the Palace Embankment and the bridge of the same name in order to feel the November wind from the Neva. Authentic cafes, which are in abundance on Nevsky Prospekt and other streets of the city, will not let you freeze.

An obligatory point of the program is the ascent to the colonnade of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The whole city is in the palm of your hand.

      Kaliningrad

Why you need to go: feel the European spirit on vacation in November without leaving Russia.

What is the weather like: in November in Kaliningrad it is mostly cloudy, it can rain any day. The average temperature during the day is about +6 °C. If at the beginning of November you still feel the outgoing warmth, then by the end of the month everything looks like winter.

Where to go in Kaliningrad: in November you are still waiting for the historical center of old Koenigsberg – Kant Island, Cathedral, Amalienau district. What else to do in Kaliningrad in November? Visit museums (of the ocean, marzipan, amber), walk around the ancient city gates and look for small homlin figurines placed along the central streets.

      4200 accommodation options in Kaliningrad

      Kazan

Why go: to see how Russian and Tatar culture are combined in the “third capital of Russia”.

What’s wrong with the weather: autumn here smoothly turns into winter, the temperature goes into the minus zone, it can snow and even blizzard. But it usually does not reach severe frosts on vacation in November.

What to see in Kazan in November: The weather is not conducive to long walks, so everyone prefers a cozy city center with a white-stone Kremlin, museums, the Kul-Sharif mosque, the Syuyumbike tower and the Annunciation Cathedral. Where else to go in Kazan in November: we recommend the national complex “Tugan avylym” – a Tatar village with traditional treats and life is recreated there.

      Dagestan

Why you should go: spend a vacation in November against the backdrop of unusual nature and ancient buildings. What is the weather like? However, in the mountainous regions it is cool, the wind often blows.

What to see in Dagestan in November: the picturesque nature of Gunib, the Khunzakh plateau and the Sulak canyon, the ancient citadel of Derbent and the coast of the Caspian Sea. Where else to go in Dagestan in November: Sarykum dune, Tobot waterfall, extreme center in Matlas, high-mountain villages in the Gunib region, Saltinsky waterfall, Naryn-Kala fortress.

Rest on thermal springs in Tyumen

Why go: visit full-fledged thermal resorts and get a boost of vitality on the eve of a long winter.

What is the weather like: in November it is quite frosty in Tyumen, -7…-5 °C, and on some days it is even colder. Many cloudy days, it often snows. But the water of hot springs in Tyumen does not cool down all year round.

Hot springs to visit: the most popular are “Pine Forest”, “Verkhniy Bor”, “Avan”, “Wave”, “Taiga”, “Polyanka”. Almost all places are well equipped: there are cafes, gazebos, bath complexes, recreation areas for children. At the hot springs in Tyumen, you can improve the condition of any body system. Before the trip, consult with your doctor, and do not forget your bathing suits on the road.

Among the more exotic options, let’s highlight the Crimea: in early November it is not cold there, you can safely explore the palaces and natural beauties, taste fine wine and swim in the indoor pool on the territory of the hotel.

Until November 3, 2022, the tourist train “To Karelia” runs. It starts from Moscow and calls in Petrozavodsk, Sortavala and Vyborg (departure on Fridays). Sicily in November: Travel Tips, Weather, and More

      Weather

November is one of the wettest times of year (next to December). You can expect a few inches of rain in Sicily this month, with fog rolling in in higher elevations in the interior of the island. Sicily keeps a mostly mild Mediterranean climate, so temperatures along the coast like in Palermo and Cefalù in the north and Trapani on the west range from 55˚F to 66˚F (13-19˚C) and in Catania along the east coast, from 50˚F to 68˚F. While along the coast a dip in the sea is not unheard of as the sea temp averages 69˚F (21˚C).

The hills and mountains in Sicily’s interior are naturally cooler, though it’s more apparent in the evenings with average lows of 48˚F (9˚C) and highs of 64˚F (18˚C) in Ragusa and colder still in Prizzi at a higher elevation (43-54˚F/6-12˚C). With the variable weather, you’ll want to pack warmer layers and a waterproof jacket with your just-in-case swimsuit.

      Crowds & Costs

The discounted rates and lack of crowds are good enough reason to travel to Sicily during November. Although you’ll have to take into account the number of hotels and restaurants in resort towns and wineries that are closed, excusing major cities like Palermo, Syracuse, and Messina. What hotels do remain open will be heavily discounted. It’s important to note, too, that ferries to smaller islands off of Sicily, like the Aeolian Islands, will have reduced services.

Be aware too, that culturally Sicilians follow the practice of taking a siesta—a short nap taken in the early afternoon. Local businesses close typically between 1:30-4:00 pm daily, year-round.

      Where to Go

Because Sicily has a longer warm-weather season than the rest of Italy, the Italian island is open for complete exploration—it’s even still possible to sunbathe and swim in the sea.

With that said, renting a car is your best option to revise plans quickly when the sunshine turns to rain, and you need to leave the beach behind. The southeast is one great option to immerse yourself in cultural pursuits as well as experience beaches. Start in Catania and drive to the ancient city of Syracuse, stopping to check out the historic ruins and old fishing villages along the way.

Tour the Neapolis Archaeological Park and spend time walking the streets of Ortygia Island, Syracuse’s historic city center. Continue to the elegant baroque cathedral town of Noto, before exploring the nature reserves of Vendicari and Plemmirio for white sand beaches and oceanfront caves and grottos. From there, head to the medieval and baroque towns of Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, and Modica.

If you can afford the time, drive further up the coast to explore important archaeological sites like the stunning well-preserved mosaics in Villa Romano del Casale outside of Piazza Armerina and the nearby ancient Greek ruins of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. Read 7 Days in Sicily for alternate self-drive itineraries.

      What to Do

If the weather is decent, head to the south coast to brave a swim or lie out on any number of beaches now that the tourists are at their lowest count. And if the rains continue to hold off, touring Sicily’s plethora of important archaeological sites is undoubtedly a must. If you’re in the southwest, you’ll want to visit Selinunte’s archaeological park for impressive ancient Greek ruins, the Temple of Hera being the most famous monument to visit.

Wine lovers will want to book their flights to overlap with November 11, St. Martin’s Day, the time when young wine is mature enough to be drunk, and celebrations abound with wine tastings and seasonal fare. As the island is the Mediterranean’s largest, it’s best to focus on one wine region, like the area around Taormina. If you have a rental, go for a scenic drive through the hills of the Nebrodi mountains to the small village of Castell’Umberto for a unique St. Martin’s Day event. Drink wine in a festive environment and eat locally sourced chestnuts and mushrooms while cheering on barrel-rolling competitors.

And if the weather does turn bad, take advantage of the downtime and enjoy Sicily’s unique culinary tradition—a mix of flavors created from the island’s long history with Greek, Arab, and Norman occupation. Try pasta with sardines, a national sweet and sour dish that combines wild fennel and North African flavors like pine nuts, saffron, and dried fruit or Sicilian black pork for a taste of Sicily’s indigenous black swine. You can even visit farms dedicated to raising mailino nero, where pastures studded with acorns, olives, and carobs make for sausage with sensational flavor. For more culinary experiences, see this article.

For something sweet beyond San Martino cookies, there’s the Chocolate Festival in Modica to consider where the celebrated chocolate is still crafted according to 16th-century recipes. And with the November rains come greener pastures, allowing for grazing sheep to produce the milk necessary to make ricotta, the key ingredient in cannoli and cassata (Sicilian cheesecake).

      Events

Chocomodica. Taking place at the end of October and leading into November, Modica celebrates 400 years of chocolate making over four days with music, art, cooking workshops, food and wine pairings, and tastings.

All Saints Day. A national religious holiday, the first two days of November sees families visit the graves of their deceased loved ones to pay respects, and pastry shops prepare “bones of the dead” confections and almond paste treats.

Festa di San Martino (St. Martin’s Day). A nationwide event (November 11) celebrating must (young wine) becoming wine. Celebrations take place throughout wine regions and in larger cities, showcasing just matured wine, alongside roasted chestnuts and San Martino cookies.

      Benefits of November Travel

November is an underrated time to visit Portugal. Not only are the temperatures mild – a saving grace for visitors from colder countries, who can feel like we’re melting in Portugal’s hot climate. But perhaps more importantly, the costs are a lot lower.

November is Portugal’s off-peak season. Summer has long passed, and Christmas is still a long way off. This means that prices are at their lowest, for accommodation, transport, and even food. Flights to Portugal can also be found for a steal.

If you’re keen on a peaceful vacation, this is also a perfect time to visit. Rural Portugal is sleepy and quiet, and you’ll get to see a more authentic side to places that often cater specifically to tourists. You’ll also be able to explore the many museums and attractions without the crowds. Perfect for photo opportunities and slow appreciation.

      Weather in Portugal in November

November is the beginning of Portugal’s winter season. This means that you may experience some light showers and a chill in the air. But compared to much of Europe, the weather is mild and lovely. It’s also often sunny, with temperatures averaging around 18°C maximum.

The weather gets warmer the further south you go, lifting by around 3 degrees celsius on average from the north to the southern tip.

Each city has its draws, but depending on the kind of vacation you’re planning, weather plays a definite role. I’ve put together what to expect from each Portuguese city’s weather in November.

      Lisbon Weather November

      Lisbon in November

Lisbon in November is perfect for those who want sparse crowds and an authentic experience of the city, without the cold of deep winter. Temperatures average at around 18°C maximum and 12°C minimum, with rainfall over 9-10 days of the month.

This means that Lisbon November weather is still substantially warmer than December. And it’s a lot quieter too before the Christmas season sets in.

      What to Do

Lisbon has many exciting attractions and hidden gems. But what can you do in November that you can’t enjoy any other time of the year?

      • Celebrate All Saints Day on 1st November with the locals, snacking on roasted chestnuts and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere
      • Embrace the local music culture at a festival, the Vodafone Mexefest
      • Enjoy Lisbon’s winter cafe culture, indulging in hot coffee and pastries
      • Visit the Jerónimos Monastery and snap some photographs in front of its amazing architecture with no one else in the shot – a rare opportunity
      • Go museum-hopping, taking advantage of the almost non-existent lines

      Porto Weather November

      Porto weather November

The weather in Porto in November is a lot chillier than its southern neighbours. Temperatures average at a 17°C maximum and  9°C minimum, and rainy days take a small jump, averaging at 11 days.

While Porto may not be your go-to for sunny weather in Portugal, it’s a fantastic place to be. The gloomy skies compliment Porto’s gothic architecture, and the port tastes just as good as in summer! Travel from Lisbon to Porto for the weekend, and enjoy the stunning wine region in the onset of winter. With so many amazing things to see and do in Porto, here is my top suggestions!

      What to Do

      • Explore Douro Valley on an exciting wine tour and warm up with some (or plenty) local port
      • Explore the historic city on foot or by bicycle
      • Watch a traditional Fado performance in an intimate concert

      Weather in Algarve in November

Like its main city, Faro, the Algarve is sunny and pleasant in November. Temperatures vary substantially throughout the day, and you can expect quite a chill in the evenings, while noon is usually toasty.

The off-peak season here is ideal for anyone looking to take a break. Prices are low, and everything is quiet and peaceful. In rural Algarve, you’re likely to see no other tourists for days.

      What to Do

      • Celebrate what you may never have thought you would – sweet potatoes – at the annual Sweet Potato Festival in Aljezur
      • Take a boat trip to the phenomenal Caves of Benagil
      • Taste as much of the local cuisine as you can at the Rota do Petisco
      • If you play golf, Algarve has over forty golf courses and the mild temperatures of November are ideal for the sport

      Faro Weather November

      Faro weather November

Portugal’s southernmost city is your best bet for beachy weather and sunny days. The temperature in November stays warm, averaging around 20°C maximum and 11°C minimum. Rainfall is minimal, at only 5 days on average.

Even on its coldest days, Faro is a beautiful city to visit, with historic charm and cobblestone streets. The landscape is incredible, with monumental rock formations and picturesque beaches.

      What to Do

      • Go hiking along the coastal mountain trails just outside Faro and snap photos of the deserted beaches
      • Join a tour to Portugal’s famous Deserta and Farol islands without the crowds that are common there
      • Experience an ancient festival, St Martin’s Fair, with live local music, delicious food, and wine
      • Join the locals in the unique LUZA Festival, a celebration of light and art

      Albufeira Weather November

Albufeira is one of the Algarve’s most popular holiday destinations, with sandy beaches and vibrant nightlife. In winter, the town calms down a lot but the local population remains and returns to its fishing village roots.

Still, November remains warm and sunny, with temperatures averaging 20°C maximum and 11°C minimum. The rainy season hasn’t set in yet, and you can expect only around 5 days of light rainfall.

      What to Do

      • Explore the nearby villages, forests and orange groves on a guided jeep tour from Albufeira
      • Stroll through the Old Town and lounge on quiet, picture-perfect beaches
      • Try the town’s hearty winter cuisine

      Weather in Inland Portugal

      Portugal weather November

Portugal is most popular for its rugged coastline, but the country’s inland villages and wilderness are uniquely beautiful. If you’re looking for a peaceful vacation, it may even be the better option.

The climate inland is less tempered by the Atlantic Ocean, which means summer is hotter and winter is colder than along the coast. So expect a few more rainy days, and a degree or two lower than the coastal cities on the same latitude.

What to Pack for Portugal in November

No matter what time of the year you prefer to visit this scenic country, packing the right gear is always important. Here are a few necessities that will have you ready for your winter trip:

      • Light waterproof jacket & layers: since the weather varies from warm and sunny to rainy in November, it’s important to pack layers. A light waterproof jacket is the perfect top layer. It protects you from the elements, keeps you dry in any conditions, and folds up small, fitting easily into a day pack.
      • Sunscreen & hat: the sunny weather certainly isn’t gone in Portugal’s early winter. Pack your sunny supplies and prepare to enjoy some clear-skies, particularly if you’re heading to the south.
      • Camera: Portugal is a stunning destination, with gorgeous natural landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and historic attractions. You’ll certainly want to bring your camera to capture the beauty, along with all your favourite moments.
      • Comfortable walking shoes: one of the best things to do in Portugal in the winter season is to go hiking. There are trails for every fitness level across the coastal country, and they all guarantee impressive views. It’s always best to pack comfortable shoes, whether you’re planning to stroll through the city or trek across mountains.

standard of living, the pros and cons of moving to Vienna

Austria is an attractive country for immigrants: a sixth of the population are foreigners. But it happens that after a couple of years of living in Austria, families of foreigners come back, unable to adapt. In the article, we will understand the features of local life, which are a plus for some, and a minus for others.

Economy and standard of living in Austria

Austria has a stable growing economy and a high standard of living. Since 2000, GDP per Austrian has doubled. According to this indicator, Austria is in seventh place in the European Union: higher than Germany and France. nine0005

However, the explosive growth phase ended with the financial crisis of 2008: from that moment on, per capita GDP remained almost unchanged and the Austrian economy fluctuated in sync with the world economy.

GDP per Austrian in 20 years

Austria is the second country in Europe in terms of average family income, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development – OECD. An Austrian family earns an average of 3295 € per month, excluding taxes, social and pension contributions: about half of the income goes to mandatory contributions.

      Austria occupies the second place

in Europe in terms of family income

But the Austrians spend almost everything they earn – 3250 € per family per month, according to the Austrian Office of Statistics. Although consumer prices in Austria are lower than in Germany or France, as evidenced by the higher purchasing power parity in Austria.

      Security and Austrian society

The population of Austria is about 9 million people, 88% of them are German-speaking Austrians, the remaining 12% are immigrants from EU states and other countries of the world. At the same time, the Austrians feel safe, despite the large number of migrants.

      OECD Better Life Index

Firstly, Austria ranks above Germany, France and the UK in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) safety rating. And secondly, the secret is also that the Austrians maintain a traditional way of life, which gives a sense of security. For the same reason, Austrians are wary of visitors, so it is difficult for foreigners to make acquaintances, even for those who speak German from birth. nine0005

The official language of Austria is German. But the Austrians speak a dialect, not standard German, which is taught in schools and universities. The dialect for the Austrians is a sign of “one’s own”, and the ability to speak it simplifies adaptation in Austria.

      Austrian German

Austrian migration policy aims to integrate foreigners into Austrian society and its traditional way of life. To obtain citizenship, you need to live in the country for 30 years. In some cases, foreigners receive citizenship earlier, but for this you need to prove integration into society. Such proof can be knowledge of German at level B2 or work in a public organization. nine0005 Austrians in national costumes at a folk festival

      Ecology and climate

Austria has a reputation as a country with good ecology. Garbage is sorted and recycled here, public transport is being developed to reduce harmful emissions. Austria is in third place in Europe among the countries with the youngest car fleet, and new cars emit less harmful substances.

Water in Austria can be drunk from the tap: it is extracted from underground and mountain sources – it tastes like spring water. In 2021, Austria ranked second after Cyprus for the purity of water in swimming pools. There is no sea in Austria, but there are beaches on the banks of rivers and mountain lakes. nine0005

At the same time, the level of PM 2.5, fine particulate matter that can settle in the lungs, has been exceeded in Austria. The content of particulate matter in the air is above the standards of the World Health Organization and the OECD average.

The reason is transit road transport of goods through Austria and calm weather in mountainous areas. To solve the problem of road transit, tunnels and railways are being built in the Austrian Alps.

The climate in Austria is mild : grapes ripen in summer, and in winter snow occurs only in the mountains. It looks like Sochi, but the climate is dry and windless. nine0005

      Austrian medicine

Quality medicine is one of the advantages of living in Austria. Thanks to the healthcare system, life expectancy in Austria is 81 years. This is 8 years more than in Russia. Life expectancy is the average age that current children will live to. It characterizes the current state of the healthcare system and living conditions in the country.

      81 years

      Austrian life expectancy – Eurostat

Austria has a compulsory health insurance system that covers 98% of the country’s inhabitants are citizens and foreigners. Employees pay insurance 50/50 with the employer. Entrepreneurs and self-employed people pay for insurance in full. The husband’s insurance covers his wife and children.

The disadvantage of Austrian healthcare is the long wait for a specialist appointment or diagnostics. The first appointment is with a family therapist. He refers to a narrow specialist: a cardiologist, a gastroenterologist, a surgeon. Waiting for an appointment with a specialist for 2-3 weeks is normal for Austria. You will have to wait the same amount for diagnostics: ultrasound or MRI. If you don’t want to wait, you can apply for a VHI policy – it will be accepted without a queue. nine0005 The Vienna Central Clinical Hospital is the fifth in Europe in terms of staff and patient beds

      Education

Kindergartens in Austria are attended by 95% of children from three to five years old – there are no problems with places. Kindergartens are municipal and private. Private kindergartens are usually owned by parishes, foundations or public organizations.

Until the age of five, a kindergarten is usually paid, it does not matter if it is private or municipal. The age of the child from which kindergarten becomes free depends on the region. For example, in Vienna, kindergartens are free of charge, regardless of age. nine0005

From the age of five, when preparation for school begins, municipal kindergarten becomes compulsory and free of charge. Parents pay only food and additional expenses, like in Russia. In Austrian kindergartens, children are not divided into age groups, everyone spends time together, this may seem unusual.

Secondary education in Austria is compulsory and free. The secondary school reveals and develops abilities, helps to understand what is better and in what direction it is worth developing. The older the class, the more items to choose from. The student, together with teachers and parents, himself forms a program for his development. nine0005

Higher education. Austrian diplomas are recognized in other EU countries. For Austrians, higher education is free, for foreigners – from 400 to 800 € per year. But the rating of Austrian universities is low. For example, the University of Vienna is in the second hundred of the world ranking – below Moscow State University, which is in 93rd place. In the European market, graduates from German, British and French universities are highly valued.

      Shanghai Ranking

The University of Vienna is the oldest university in Austria. Founded in 1365. Currently studying at the university 90 thousand students

      Housing

The average price of housing in Austria is 3100 € per square meter. Only half of Austrians live in their own houses and apartments, the rest are rented. Housing rent is regulated by law:

      1. A lease agreement is concluded for at least a year, but more often for three at once.
      2. Prepayment required for 6-12 months.
      3. You need to make a security deposit in the amount of rent for 3 months. The owner will return this money upon departure, if everything is in order with the apartment and the calculations. nine0150
      4. You can terminate the contract without loss not earlier than after 15 months.

Real estate market in Austria: prices in Vienna and regions

Finding the right option is difficult, so they usually turn to a realtor. The remuneration for selecting an apartment is usually equal to the monthly rent. Renting a furnished three-bedroom apartment in Vienna costs an average of 1,400 € per month.

      Urban environment and comfort

Vienna is the largest city in Austria with a population of 1.7 million. Half of the city’s area is occupied by parks and reservoirs, which contributes to good ecology and a comfortable urban environment. Vienna has a well-developed public transport system. Getting around the city is easier by bus or tram than by car. nine0005

Vienna is also the most expensive city in Austria. Often, Austrians and foreigners settle in the nearest suburbs of the capital in the federal state of Lower Austria in order to save on housing.

The Burggarten in Vienna was built in the 19th century. It was the personal park of the Austrian emperor. In 1919, the park became public
