The weather on the island at the end of autumn is similar to March, it is just as unpredictable and mysterious. The day is quite warm, especially in the first half of the month. Forecasters please with forecasts and promise +20-21 degrees of heat during the day and up to +12 at night. The sea cools inexorably, by the end of November its temperature is +20.

In many ways, the weather in November depends on the weather conditions throughout the autumn. If October brought a lot of rain with wind, then the sea will cool down by November and it will be very uncomfortable to swim in it. You will need to take care of the opportunity to swim in the heated pool at the hotel. And if October pleased with warmth, vacationers in November will have a chance to spend a few warm days on the beach. In any case, it is better not to tune in to a very warm sea, the weather can be changeable. nine0003

In the last week of November, summer finally says goodbye to the island, it is replaced by gloomy skies and rains. In some years the November rains were very long and cold. All travelers should dress in warm waterproof shoes and clothes. Take an umbrella or a raincoat with you on a trip around the island in case of heavy rain with wind. In the mountains in November it is even colder than on the coast. The usual daily temperature does not exceed +13 degrees.

By the end of autumn, the endless flow of tourists finally stops. Only lovers of budget outdoor recreation in campsites ready with bicycles go to the island. With a cold snap, hotel prices are noticeably reduced, and food becomes cheaper. Tourists have a good opportunity to explore the entire island, plunge into the life of local residents and save a lot on the trip. nine0003

Traditional high season activities are rare in November. Many hotels, restaurants and concert halls are closed for the cold season and will only open at the end of April.

Reviews of tourists about the weather in Cyprus in November

rested from 2 to 9 November. Margandina hotel (recommended)

At this time there is no terrible heat, the sun is warm, but the wind is refreshing – ideal for people who do not like heat or are unhealthy. You can swim in the sea, the water is warm. There are few people in small towns, the last tourists for the season are mostly foreign pensioners and families with children. The temperature reached 26 degrees Celsius. On the first day (when we arrived) it was raining, but after that all the days are sunny and clear. After the rain, the first 2 days it was cool in the morning and in the evening (take a sweater and pants), but then the body became and in the evening it did not freeze in shorts. Sunrise at 6am, sunset at 5pm. on the beach you can sunbathe until 3-4, then the sun begins to be weaker and the sunset is approaching. As the guides told us, in Cyprus in large cities they rest all year round (Paphos, Limassol). In the villages (Ayia Napa) November is the last month of the season. We were worried about the weather, but we were lucky and we did not regret that we went in November. nine0003

We went to Cyprus that year, we thought that we would have time to swim and sunbathe, but the weather was not very good. The temperature during the day was from +21 to +24, at night it was generally cold, about +13, +15. It’s good that they took warm clothes with both. In general, I am silent about the water temperature +18. Plus, it rained a couple of times, but not torrential. But there is where to walk, various excursions, tours. So, who does not like the heat, then come at the end of autumn. Next time we will go in the spring or late summer.

We went last autumn. We got there when it was sunny, and our friends went two weeks later and ended up in rainy weather. We were lucky, we even swam a couple of times, the temperature was 27-29degrees, the air humidity is normal, because I don’t like it when it’s too humid. Prices are much lower than in summer. You can stay in a good comfortable hotel with food for little money. But, you need to know the language, at least at the initial level, so that you can explain what you need.

Weather in Cyprus in November, water temperature. Can you swim? nine0003

Ideal for those who don’t like or can’t stand the heat. It all depends on how October was: if it is cold, then the end of autumn on the island should be warm.

Daylight hours in November in Cyprus are short. Late dawn around 6am and early sunset around 5pm. There are less than ten hours of sunshine. In the west of the country, it is slightly less cloudy, on the rest of the coast, cloudiness is from 17 to 19.4%.

The rainy season begins at the end of the month, but the air humidity is normal – about 63%. In total, November has a maximum of 7 rainy days. But more often it is 1-2, depending on the resort. nine0270

Air and water temperature in Cyprus in November

The weather in Cyprus in November is changeable, but friendly.

On average, 20-23 degrees above zero during the day. At night, the mercury thermometer drops to 13-15 °C.

Due to the fact that the heat finally subsided, those who like the mild Mediterranean climate flock to the island. nine0003

The main vacationers are pensioners, people with heart disease, families with children and newlyweds. There are many active young people who love cycling and camping.

If there are no problems with sunbathing in Cyprus in November, then there may be a hitch with water procedures. Depending on the weather, the Mediterranean Sea can please with a comfortable temperature, or it can already cool down quite a lot.

The average monthly water temperature is about 22.2-22.5 °C. nine0270 But by the end of November – beginning of December the sea will cool down to chilly 20 degrees. If you don’t want to make a mistake, then you should choose a hotel in Cyprus, which has a heated pool.

What to do in Cyprus in November

November in Cyprus is unity with nature. There are many beautiful places in the country, and some of them also have the status of nature reserves. For example, not far from Paphos is located peninsula Akamas , covered with pine forests and surrounded by sandy bays of unreal beauty. nine0003

Rich in unique vegetation and impressive with rocks, the nature reserve can be explored by walking along the hiking trails. And you can choose a little adrenaline excursion in jeeps. At the same time, visit the station-incubator Lara , which helps to survive the Red Book species of sea turtles.

More civilized parks – Athalassa near Nicosia and Cavo Greco between Ayia Napa and Protaras. Observation platforms and picnic areas are equipped here, there are bicycle routes. Before going to the botanical gardens Athalassa , look at the miniature park layout displayed to visitors. This will help you orient yourself before walking through a vast territory.

Cavo Greco will please you not only with vegetation, but also with good fishing. Sea bass, igloo fish, as well as moray eels and octopuses are caught in the local waters. By the way, in Cyprus in November, the weather and water temperature favor the catch in fresh waters.

>> Do not rent a car in Cyprus until you read this article! <<<

If many people know about the possibility of fishing in Cyprus, only a few people know that Cypriots are very fond of hunting. They shoot mostly birds. The island is in the path of migratory birds. There is no need to worry: the places for migration corridors are protected, so there is no irreparable damage to nature.

November is also the season for spearfishing. The most interesting places for this are in Paphos, Ayia Napa and Limassol. However, any hunting requires special licenses. nine0003

A much more peaceful, but no less interesting holiday is visiting historical sites. Near Paphos there are catacombs Saint Solomon where early Christians hid from persecution. Near the same resort is Forty Columns Castle belonging to the Byzantine era.

What is Cyprus without antiquity? In November, the weather allows you to breathe in the air saturated with antiquity Kourion – the most famous policy of Cyprus . It is located near Limassol. On the way, you can look at Petra tou Romiou is the place where the goddess Aphrodite was born. Near any town on the island there are historical monuments.

Is it possible to swim in Cyprus in November?

This will depend on the weather. If you are lucky, and the month turns out to be sunny, then the sea will not have time to cool down and the water temperature will be suitable for swimming. When planning a trip in the third decade of the month, do not count on the fact that the sea will be warm.

Is it possible to sunbathe in Cyprus in November? nine0270

At the end of autumn, the gentle sun is enough to get a perfect tan. You still need to use sunscreen.

How to dress in Cyprus in November?

When packing your suitcase, put an umbrella, waterproof shoes and clothes for our early autumn. In the evening and in the rain you will need a jacket or raincoat, and in the mountains Troodos thick sweaters and sweatshirts will come in handy.

Where is the best place to relax in Cyprus in November? nine0270

Small resorts die out at the end of autumn. If you want company, it is better to go to big cities such as Limassol or Paphos.

The sunniest weather in Protaras and Ayia Napa is about 22.4 °C. It also has the warmest nights and the lowest chance of rain.

What fruits are there in Cyprus in November?

>> Do not rent a car in Cyprus until you have read this article! <<<

Citrus paradise will start on the island in January, but with the approach of winter, there are still a variety of lemons, tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, pomelo and clementines on the shelves of vegetable shops. There are still local pomegranates and bananas are already on sale. You can enjoy kiwi, persimmon and guava. Pretty democratic prices for figs. nine0003

Should I go to Cyprus in November?

The island in November is shown to people who do not tolerate heat well and do not like noisy crowds of tourists. The weather will allow you to sunbathe, admire nature and visit historical places, which are many in Cyprus.

Is winter a good time to visit Spain?

Most people who come to Spain for city breaks to visit Barcelona or Madrid usually come between the spring and autumn months, when the weather is great for walking outside and visiting places.

Holidaymakers who come to Spain for beach holidays usually come in summer, when the  Spanish costas, meaning Spain’s coasts, get really crowded with locals and international tourists as well.

But how about winter? Is Spain a good destination to catch some winter sun?

The honest answer is that it depends on where you’re planning to go and what your expectations are.

Compared to its European neighbors, peninsular Spain has mild winters, especially in the south, meaning Andalucia and along the coasts like in the regions of Valencia, Murcia, and Almeria.

But the warmest places to visit in winter in Spain are definitely the islands, especially the Canary Islands, which are also our top recommendation when it comes to hot places to visit in winter in Europe.

Best places to visit in Spain for winter sun

With a bit of luck, you can spend a sunny and warm holiday in Spain even in December, January or February, when the rest of Europe is dealing with cold weather and sometimes snow.

We’ll first show you the warmest places in continental Spain during winter and at the end, you can find our recommendations for the absolute hottest winter destinations in Spain, which are the 4 largest of the Canary Islands.

1. Malaga

Malaga is a beautiful and vibrant city on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Costa del Sol is an extremely popular tourist destination during the summer months, but less so during winter. Although you can’t expect proper summer temperatures in winter, you can expect the weather to resemble springtime, with mild temperatures and some sunny days mixed with rainy days.

If you’re lucky and you visit Malaga in December you might even be able to catch some sun on the beach, but it’s also possible to experience a few days of continuous rain. In winter in Malaga, you can usually expect maximum temperatures during the day to range between 11°C and 22°C, which is a big difference.

Still, Malaga is a nice place to visit in Spain even in winter, if you want to escape the tourist crowds and simply enjoy Spain’s tapas bars and visit museums and palaces.

Malaga weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17°C (62.6°F)
  • Average low temperature: 8°C (46. 4°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 6
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6

2. Valencia

Who dares to test the sea temperature in Valencia in winter?

Valencia is one of our favorite cities in Spain.

It’s a big city, it has amazing paella and tasty Sangria, the people are friendly, the city looks green compared to other Spanish cities and you also have easy access to a huge beach.

Valencia is also a good base if you want to explore several other places in the Valencian community like Parc Natural de l’Albufera, Gandia, Denia, Javea, or Castellon de la Plana.

Valencia weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17°C (62.6°F)
  • Average low temperature: 7.8°C (46.04°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 4
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 5.5

3. Alicante

Also part of the Valencian Community, Alicante is located a bit further south from Valencia and it’s yet another lovely city to visit in winter. Alicante has a beautiful urban beach Playa del Postiguet where you can take walks even on winter days, especially if it’s sunny.

You can also climb up to Santa Barbara Castle and admire the view from up top and in the afternoon you can try several of the nice bars and restaurants in town.

Alicante is well connected with several other towns on the coast and you can use the long-distance Alicante Tram to travel to places like Villajoyosa, Playa San Juan, or the popular resort Benidorm.

Alicante weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17.5°C (63.5°F)
  • Average low temperature: 7°C (44.6°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 3.5
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6

4. Murcia

Murcia is located a little further south than Alicante and it is less touristy than Valencia, Malaga, or Alicante. The winter weather in Murcia is mild, with fewer rainy days than Malaga but very similar temperatures.

Murcia is very quiet and relaxed during the winter months, as it’s not a coastal town and it gets very few visitors during the low season. However, Murcia can be a good place to stay during winter for remote workers who are just looking for a city with mild temperatures, good internet and a chilled atmosphere. From Murcia, you can easily visit other places like Cartagena, Orihuela or Torrevieja.

Murcia weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17°C (62.6°F)
  • Average low temperature: 5.5°C (41.9°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 4
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6

5. Almeria

Located in the Andalusia region, Almeria is not as popular from a tourist perspective as Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, or Malaga. But Almeria still has a few interesting places to visit like the Alcazaba (medieval fortress) or the cathedral, which can easily be seen during the winter months, when Almeria is among the best places to visit in Spain for some winter sun.

Almeria is located on the coast within the Gulf of Almeria and it enjoys lovely warm winter days, with much less rain than most of the other cities in continental Spain. Except for the Canary Islands, Almeria might be one of the warmest places to visit in Spain in winter, with a bit of luck, since rainy days can occur here as well.

Almeria weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17.5°C (63.5°F)
  • Average low temperature: 9°C (48.2°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 3
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6.2

6. Benidorm

Benidorm is one of the most well-known tourist destinations in Spain, especially during the summer months when the hotels get full, the beaches get crowded and the bars get noisy.

Did you know that Benidorm is the city with the most skyscrapers in Spain? The city is quite atypical for Spain and although winter is not considered high-season here, there are still tourists who visit especially during the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve.

If it’s sunny and warm you can still walk on the beach, grab a coffee at one of the cafes or bars on the promenade or visit other places along the coastline like Altea or Calp.

Benidorm weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 17°C (62.6°F)
  • Average low temperature: 7.7°C (45.86°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 4
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6

The Canary Islands – the warmest place to visit in Spain in winter

All of the previous destinations presented in this article were located in peninsular Spain, but the Canary Islands archipelago is the Spanish region with the best winter weather and also the hottest place to visit in Europe in winter.

There are 8 Canary Islands, all similar and at the same time different from each other, but for the winter months, we can recommend you to visit one of these 4, which are the most popular: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote or Fuerteventura.

7. Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and also the island that is most popular and gets the most visitors annually.

If you want to visit Tenerife during the season, you should stay in the south of the island in places like Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos, or Costa Adeje. Remember that winter is considered the high season in Tenerife, as the Canary Islands are the best destination for winter sun in Spain and Europe as well.

Tenerife South weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 22.1°C (71.78°F)
  • Average low temperature: 15.8°C (60.44°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 2
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6.5

8. Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is yet another popular choice when it comes to warm beach holidays in Spain during the winter season, from December and until March.

For the best weather possible, we recommend you to stay in resorts located in the south like Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico, or Meloneras. Las Palmas, the island’s capital, is also a popular destination in winter, especially for remote workers, but the weather is not quite as warm as in the south of Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 21.4°C (70.52°F)
  • Average low temperature: 15.3°C (59.54°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 3.5
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6

9. Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the Canary Islands where you should go if you’re looking for a relaxed and chilled atmosphere. With sunny and warm weather even during the winter season, Fuerteventura is a good place to be if you want to escape the harsh winters in continental Europe or the UK.

All of the island’s main resorts are good options for winter holidays: Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma, or Morro Jable.

Fuerteventura weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 21.2°C (70.16°F)
  • Average low temperature: 15°C (59°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 2.5
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6.5

10. Lanzarote

  • Lanzarote is the smallest of the 4 Canary Islands mentioned here, but it’s also a good option for sunny winter breaks in Spain.

If you want to visit Lanzarote in winter we would recommend you to stay in Playa Blanca, as it tends to be a bit warmer because it’s less windy than the other resorts. Puerto del Carmen is also a good option since it’s the largest and busiest resort and Costa Teguise can be windier, which makes it a favorite among visitors looking to practice water sports.

Lanzarote weather in winter

  • Average high temperature: 21.2°C (70.16°F)
  • Average low temperature: 14.5°C (58.1°F)
  • Average rainy days per month: 3.2
  • Average daily sunshine hours: 6.7

How hot are the Canary Islands in winter? Can you sunbathe?

Yes, you can definitely sunbathe and even swim in the Canaries even in winter.

When the sun is out the “real feel” temperature will be higher than what you would expect by looking at the thermometer. This is because of the UV index, so you should still use a high SPF sun cream even in winter.

The Canary Islands are a good destination for a warm winter holiday in Spain but don’t expect tropical weather with overly high temperatures or high humidity, because the climate in the Canaries is sub-tropical, which means that the weather is just right all year round.

Planning a winter holiday to Spain and you’re thinking to visit one of the Canary Islands?

Best Things to See & Do – Devour Tours

This post was originally published on November 14, 2016 and was updated on December 5, 2022.

It’s the calm before the holiday storm. Before you know it, Madrid will be all decked out for Christmas and Three Kings Day. We love the festive winter atmosphere in the city, but the last few days of autumn are a time worth taking advantage of as well.

As the crisp November air and clouds blanket Madrid, it’s the perfect time of year to tuck into favorite fall foods and get off the beaten path.

Late fall is low season for visitors in much of Spain, and Madrid is no different. It’s a peaceful, laid-back time of year between the summer tourism rush and the holiday hustle and bustle.

If you’ll be in Madrid in November, you’ve made a good choice. Let us show you the best ways to make the most of the month!

Weather in Madrid in November

Madrid is at its most stunning in November as the trees burst into bright fall colors. Temperatures are perfectly crisp and autumnal, averaging between the high 40s and the mid-high 50s Fahrenheit (10–15 degrees Celsius). Nights and early mornings are definitely on the chillier side, so be sure to dress in warm layers.

It’s worth keeping in mind that November is Madrid’s rainiest month, with an average of 2 inches (50 mm) falling throughout the month. This adds up to a total of about nine potential rainy days.

Bundle up! Chilly weather starts to arrive in Madrid in November.

Things to Do in Madrid in November

See a Show at the Autumn Festival

Madrid’s biggest and best performing arts festival of the year is a must when visiting in mid-late November.

For nearly 40 years, the Autumn Festival (Festival de Otoño) has featured music, dance and theater performances by stars from around the world. With dozens of events taking place at venues throughout the city, you can’t miss it if you’re looking to experience a little bit of culture and plenty of entertainment at the same time.

Enjoy Madrid’s Traditional Stew

There’s no better way to warm up after a chilly morning of sightseeing than by digging into a hearty, delicious plate of cocido madrileño. You’ll find the traditional meat-and-chickpea stew on tables across Madrid year-round, but we particularly love it in winter.

The best part? Although the general idea is the same across the board, no two cocido recipes are exactly alike. We guess you’ll just have to eat your way around some of the city’s best restaurants to try and find your favorite! Our vote goes to Taberna La Bola.

We feel nice and cozy just looking at these warm little pots of cocido madrileño simmering on the stove!

Take a Day Trip

We love Madrid, but sometimes a smaller, quainter city or town is calling our name for a quick escape.

Head beyond the capital and discover what else the region has to offer far from the busy city streets of Madrid. Toledo is always a good choice, as is the San Lorenzo de El Escorial Monastery, which is particularly beautiful in the fall.

If you don’t have access to a car, it’s easy to get there from Madrid on public transport. Just take bus #661 or #664 from the Intercambiador de Moncloa and get off at the San Lorenzo de El Escorial bus station. In just about an hour, you’ll be marveling at the idyllic UNESCO World Heritage site!

Visit Bernabeu Stadium, Home of Real Madrid

The iconic Real Madrid soccer team has won the hearts of generations of madrileños. Even if you don’t consider yourself much of a sports fan, it’s still worth touring the team’s massive stadium in order to understand this cherished aspect of local culture.

Tour Bernabeu takes you deep into the heart of the stadium, where you’ll see the team’s decades of history come to life before your eyes. You’ll also get exclusive access to the locker room, press room, presidential box and tunnel. The tour ends with the chance to step out onto the field itself, walking in the footsteps of legends.

Marvel at Madrid’s Egyptian Temple

Still can’t believe that Madrid really does have it all? The Temple of Debod will clear up any doubt. After all, how many other European capitals can claim a real, authentic Ancient Egyptian temple?

The Egyptian government gave the temple to Spain as a gift, and it was moved here from Egypt brick by brick. With views straight off of a postcard of the Casa de Campo park and its fall foliage, it’s one of the most beautiful spots here in Madrid in November.

You don’t have to go to Egypt to get a taste of ancient history. Photo credit: Willian Justen de Vasconcellos

Explore the Local Market

Fall means that market stalls all over Madrid are overflowing with fresh, colorful produce! One of our favorite things to do in Madrid in November is to spend a lazy, relaxed morning simply wandering the stalls of a vibrant local market, people-watching and sampling products from the proud vendors.

Not sure what to buy? Some of our favorite seasonal Spanish products available in November are bright orange pumpkin, fresh chestnuts, earthy wild mushrooms, and juicy pomegranates and oranges. Just be sure to save time for a drink and tapa at the market bar when you finish shopping!

Visiting the market gives you the chance to meet locals who are proudly carrying on a family tradition of selling fresh products.

Experience the Start of the Christmas Season

Even if you won’t be here in December, you’ll still be able to experience some Christmas magic in Madrid! The city officially turns on its holiday lights for the first time in late November. Enjoy a stroll around town as you marvel at the displays, or if you’re cold, hop on the Naviluz Bus for a magical ride.

Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the holiday season in Madrid! Photo credit: Jo Kassis

The exotic island that’s 5 hours from UK & has cheaper winter sun holidays than Spain

A HOLIDAY abroad is the best way to escape the cold UK winter, but trying to choose where to go can be difficult.

And there is a stunning exotic island that is just hours away that is always hot in the winter – and it is cheaper than Spain.

4

Cape Verde is the perfect alternative to Spain for winter sunCredit: Alamy

Why Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is found off the coast of Africa, meaning you can expect great weather all year round.

Rarely dropping below 24C, even in December and January the average temperature remains around 25C to 27C.

Between November and April is the best time to visit Cape Verde, with almost guaranteed sunshine making it an ideal winter sun destination.

It’s not much further to travel than the Canary Islands either.

The flight time from Cape Verde to London Heathrow is 5 hours and 32 minutes, and with good headwind you could cut that further.

What are the best Cape Verde holiday deals?

TUI is the only UK operator offering direct flights, and you can fly from London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham.

There are some bargain deals right now, with all-inclusive package holidays from £696pp for a week with return flights, working out to £99pp a night.

Another great deal we’ve found is a week-long stay at the Hotel Riu Touareg in Boa Vista, costing from £769pp.

The deal works out at £109pp a night on an all-inclusive basis, meaning all your food, drinks and snacks are all accounted for.

What is Cape Verde like?

Cape Verde is often called “Africa’s answer to the Caribbean” with a number of islands to choose from.

Two of the islands are most popular with tourists – Sal and Boa Vista.

Sal is the most popular with most of the large hotel resorts found along the beaches that are popular with surfers.

Outside of the resorts is the town of Santa Maria, with tourist facilities and restaurants serving seafood and Portuguese-influenced cuisine.

There is the fresh seafood at Americos or LobStar restaurant on the main strip, as well as the Palm Beach restaurant, which serves dishes of grilled tuna with mango and caramelised onions as well as fruity cocktails.

Or, if Italian grub is more to your taste, head to the excellent Leonardo’s nearby, which is run by a chef from Sardinia.

If you want cheap drinks, then you can find cocktails for as little as £2.50 at beach bar Ola Brasil next to the pier.

Boa Vista is also popular with a number of Blue Flag beaches, and is much less touristy.

Animal fans can see loggerhead turtles laying their eggs on the beach during the hatching season, and it is one of the best places to see humpback whales as well.

The sand dunes, often likened to the Sahara, are popular with adventure sports fans who can rent 4X4s to drive through them.

What else do I need to know about Cape Verde?

While most hotel staff will speak English, the local language is Portuguese.

There is just one hour time difference, with the UK an hour ahead.

The currency is Cape Verdean escudo (CVE) – £10 is around 1255 escudo.

There are currently no Covid restrictions and Brits can stay in Cape Verde for up to 30 days without a visa.

However, your passport must have at least six months left on it on arrival to Cape Verde.

You will also need to fill in a Traveller Pre-Registration form.

John and Jupp’s Year

//= do_shortcode(‘[in-content-square]’)?>

John Sam Jones reflects on a personal year of writing and the other things in life.

January and February: The Canary Islands – Tenerife, La Gomera and Gran Canaria… it wasn’t a seven-week holiday – we just went to live somewhere warm for the winter. We hiked (La Gomera), we partied (Gran Canaria), and we did some sight-seeing (Tenerife)… and we caught Covid – but very mildly! My publisher emails to reject my novel.

March: We recover and try to get back to ‘normal life’ in Effeld – but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – and the flood of refugees – and the talk of a major European escalation… and we’re left wondering if Putin is about to vaporize us.

We decide to live with calm elegance – and Jupp reads his way through the early days and John knits the most complicated Aran sweater he’s ever attempted – distractions from the horror. By the end of the month Jupp has refugees from Ukraine in his Integration Classes.

April: The war in a neighbouring country soon becomes part of our ‘normality’ – what an awful reality to acknowledge! We spend a few days in Groningen – one of the northern cities of the Netherlands – and a gem. Occasionally we reflect about ‘being on holiday’ when there’s a war on!

May: John turns 66 and receives his state pension from the UK – a part of which includes ‘free’ healthcare – so the NHS Business Authority confirm that the UK will pay his health insurance in Germany. We travel to Wales with two friends from Effeld – a week in Barmouth… time to catch up with friends and family, re-visit old haunts, and see the familiar through Alex and Claudia’s eyes.

June: John is re-called for a blood test after his PSA showed a slight rise at the annual urology check-up (just before Christmas 2021)… and now the rise is significant and a biopsy is scheduled. We spend a few days in Brussels – if Putin is going to kill us all we might as well cross the items off the bucket list. We reflect again about ‘being on holiday’ when there’s a war on!

July: The biopsy won’t be until mid-August, so we make an effort to enjoy the summer weather… lunch and dinner outside most days – the lavender scent heady, the geraniums a beautiful show this year.! And we spend a few days in Mainz and Wiesbaden… reflecting again about ‘being on holiday’ when there’s a war on.

John receives notification that his memoir, The Journey is Home – published in 2021 – is on the Wales Book of the Year shortlist… and at the end of the month we hear that he’s won the Creative Non-fiction category… but fail to get to Wales because Lufthansa goes on strike!

August: Planned readings of the now award-winning book with Awen Meirion at the National Eisteddfod in Tregaron are scrapped because we can’t re-schedule flights… so winning the ‘book of the year’ falls a bit flat. The trophy arrives from Wales. John has to pay 45 euros to release it from the German post office customs.

John and Isabel (from Leeds) cheer us up with an overnight visit and a re-supply of Yorkshire Tea and thick-cut marmalade! The biopsy is uncomfortable – even painful – but the day after we have a lovely day in Cologne with Derek, Gill and Joy (from Cheshire)… but later in the day John develops fever – and clearly the biopsy has caused an infection: he spends four nights in hospital on IV antibiotics!

And then the biopsy results come through… prostate cancer… and all suggestions of an autumn book tour in Wales are abandoned.

We go to Berlin… distracting behaviour!

September: In Berlin we ‘wine and dine’, we go to the theatre, we go to gay bars and clubs – and we spend some time with Stefania and John (from Manchester) who are visiting the big, bad city… and we reflect anew about ‘being on holiday’ when there’s a war on!

Then the Queen dies and German TV goes ‘over-the-top’… Jupp watches the coverage more than John!

The local Urologist suggests surgery to remove John’s prostate (because of his father’s history with aggressive prostate cancer)… she refers John to a surgeon in Essen who has a robot called da Vinci.

And then some more distraction – a two-week holiday booked months previously – a grand tour by train to the Italian Lakes stopping off in Strasburg for three nights on the way and three nights in Freiburg on the way back.

Hiking around Lake Orta is beautiful – and we have deep discussions – fuelled by Grappa – about ‘being on holiday’ when there’s a war on!

October: On our return from Italy we meet with Dr Davoudi and talk about robot assisted key-hole surgery – and a date is set in mid-November for John to ‘dance with da Vinci’.

The weather remains balmy – Golden October… we walk a lot – in the forest, by the lake – and still eat lunch outside – the geraniums now complete with the dahlias!

November: Reading… watching TV… John knits a lot: distraction. The surgery is complicated by a lot of internal bleeding – but the surgeon is confident with Jupp on the phone that all has gone well.

John’s recovery is remarkable – no pain… but as the weather turns cold, re-learning bladder control is a challenge. The histology report is all we could have hoped for: the cancer was contained within the gland and the gland was removed.

John thinks he looks sexy in Pampers – but actually he looks ridiculous! John gets a call from the BBC. They want to commission a story for broadcast on Radio 4.

December: We celebrate 36 years together – and in the context of this past year’s narrative it has taken on significance beyond the hard work of relationship: this love (the one that for centuries ‘dared not speak its name’) has nurtured and sustained us – and brought great joy… and we’re both humbled, grateful and privileged to share it.

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda… Frohe Weihnachten und alle guten Wünsche für das neue Jahr… Christmas Greetings and Happy New Year.

AdventuresActiveBeachCityDestinationsTips

Only about five hours away by plane and with mild temperatures, the Canary Islands are a particularly attractive holiday destination in November. The Spanish archipelago offers a wide range of activities even in late autumn and winter.

2 November 2021

The dreary November weather in this country is a welcome reason for many people to pack their bags and escape the onset of winter. Especially for seniors, singles and couples without children who can organize their time and holidays more flexibly, November is a good time to go on holiday outside the high season. The Canary Islands offer, with their pleasant temperatures, little precipitation and only about five hours flight time to Gran Canaria, Tenerife or Lanzarote the optimal conditions for a holiday in Europe.

Low season with optimal conditions

While April to October is actually considered the best time to travel to the Canary Islands, the two eastern islands of the seven Canary Islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, can still offer bathing weather in winter. But due to the subtropical climate and the proximity to the gulf stream, the weather is also mild in the western islands La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It is not for nothing that the Canary Islands are known as the islands of eternal spring, as it only rains up to seven days a month and even in November you can expect temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees and an average of six hours of sunshine per day.

Enjoy bathing weather in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

Those who prefer a classic beach holiday do not have to travel to the other end of the world. Due to their location, holidaymakers on the two eastern islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote can still expect temperatures of up to 26 degrees in November and the water temperature can also reach over 20 degrees in some places. While Fuerteventura impresses above all with its endless beach and dune landscape, holidaymakers on Lanzarote will also find the Timanfaya National Park, which is considered the most extensive volcanic landscape on earth.

Hiking on La Gomera and Tenerife

It is not for nothing that Tenerife is considered a hiker’s paradise par excellence: it is home to Spain’s highest mountain, the Pico del Teide, at around 3,700 metres. The former volcano and the fascinating landscape around it, which is reminiscent of a lunar landscape, are both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, holidaymakers can explore Tenerife’s rare flora and fauna on countless hiking routes. Also worth seeing are the stair-shaped pyramids of Güímar, which were built on the island in the 19th century. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is located on La Gomera: the high-altitude Garajonay National Park with its extensive laurel forests. The second smallest of the Canary Islands is a rugged volcanic mountain landscape and criss-crossed by numerous hiking routes. If you are looking for peace and quiet and want to enjoy the beauty of the authentic and rural wasteland, this is the place for you. Especially in November, when the high season is over, you have many beautiful spots here almost completely to yourself.

Surfing in the Atlantic

While from spring to about October mainly surf beginners meet on the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, from November especially advanced surfers get their money’s worth. Due to their location in the Atlantic Ocean, the islands are exposed to strong offshore winds, which provide optimal surfing conditions. Although the Canary Islands inspire with great surf and fast waves even in the high season in spring and summer, an even higher swell can be expected especially from the end of October. Surfers don’t have to worry about sharks here either. The archipelago around the islands is home to more than 50 different shark species, but they rarely approach the coast.

Natural treasures and lively city life on Gran Canaria

It is actually only the third largest of the Canary Islands in terms of surface area, yet it offers such rich diversity that it is often referred to as a miniature continent. For example, the largest city in the Canaries, Las Palmas, is located on Gran Canaria and offers holidaymakers an urban mix of pretty, historic streets and vibrant clubs, bars and restaurants. Just outside the city, one of Gran Canaria’s most popular beaches awaits holidaymakers with glorious white sand, but Gran Canaria also boasts fantastic mountain scenery. Also worth a visit are the Cenobie de Valerón cave system, with over 290 caves, and the Maspalomas dunes, which stretch for six kilometres along the beach areas of Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. If the temperatures here in November are not quite enough for a beach holiday, the island offers plenty of alternatives.

World Pet Day – a holiday on November 30

If there is no cat or dog in the house, the inhabitants of such a house are very bored. This belief has every right to life, because pets actually make our existence brighter and more meaningful. When there is someone to take care of, when there is someone to wait for you from work, when you feel the love of a creature devoted to you to the marrow of your bones, the daily routine no longer seems so gray and hopeless. An international holiday is dedicated to our smaller brothers. World Pet Day is celebrated every year at the end of the autumn season – November 30th.

The history of the holiday World Pet Day

World Pet Day – this is how the date of honoring apartment pets was called – has existed for a long time. In 1931, within the framework of the International Congress of Supporters of the Movement for the Protection of Nature in Italy, the participants of the congress put forward an initiative regarding the establishment of such a useful and necessary holiday for the world. At that significant moment, a large number of organizations for the protection of nature and environmental support declared that, for their part, they would do everything possible to awaken in the hearts of the inhabitants of the Earth a sense of compassion, mercy, love for animals and, most importantly, the readiness to bear responsibility for tamed animals. This idea has become the main goal of World Pet Day. It passes under the same slogan: “We are responsible for those we have tamed” (if you remember, this is a phrase from the work of the writer Antoine Saint-Exupery “The Little Prince”).

On World Pet Day, the organizers of the holiday hold various thematic events. These are flash mobs dedicated to organizing another shelter for stray cats and dogs or as a protest against the cruelty of people towards their pets; and pickets, and demonstrations, and concerts, and exhibitions of thoroughbred apartment predators, and entertaining quizzes. In all cities and villages, this holiday is celebrated in different ways, but all actions have one goal: to attract close attention to the problems of pets around the world as many representatives of Homo sapiens as possible. Interestingly, people of all ages, including children, are involved in events dedicated to World Pet Day. Over the past few years, an action called “Bell” has gained particular popularity. Its essence is that at a designated moment in different states and cities of our vast planet in zoos and zoos, children ring bells for 60 seconds. So the organizers of the event want to focus on the problems of animals living in cages in the mentioned institutions. After all, they can also be considered domestic to some extent, since wild animals are deprived of the opportunity to be in their natural habitat and sometimes taken away tens of thousands of kilometers from their native land.

On World Pet Day, representatives of environmental organizations are trying to show how important it is to remain human when dealing with pets. World Pet Day reminds us that every person should perceive tamed animals only as friends, wards, members of their family, but not at all as an object of entertainment. This problem is quite acute today, since so many parents buy rabbits, kittens, puppies and other babies for fun for their own children, and when the child plays enough with the baby, the latter is thrown out into the street without a shadow of regret or even taken away from home to the trash heap, as unnecessary worn item. It is not difficult to imagine what exactly will grow up from children brought up with the use of such methods, and what will become of the poor animals, who turned out to be completely helpless without human support, care and affection, without food and shelter…

World Pet Day has been celebrated in Russia for 16 years. We owe this to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, whose employees, in fact, own the initiative to hold the holiday in Russia. True, no one has officially established it yet. But this is not so bad: domestic pets are still not protected by law from cruel treatment. And bullying of domestic animals, I must say, every year takes on more and more sophisticated forms, and there is no end to them, no edge.

Most popular apartment pets

On World Pet Day, I would like to talk about what kind of pets do people most often have? It all depends on which hemisphere we are talking about. Although the preferences of the population of a particular country can also differ greatly. Therefore, we will try to answer the question posed on the example of the Russians.

The first place in the rating of animals beloved by our fellow citizens is occupied by a dog. This was influenced by the fact that this pet is distinguished by devotion and fidelity, disinterested love for its owner. Such an animal is a real protector. Communication with a dog quickly cheers you up. In her eyes, regardless of the breed, understanding comes through. Undoubtedly, a dog is man’s best friend. Most often, single people, married couples, families with children give birth to dogs.

The second most popular is a cat. She is sweet, playful and completely unpredictable. The combination of these qualities causes sympathy in a large number of people. Many also like the independence and self-sufficiency of a cat. Such a pet is unpretentious and loves affection very much. And the cat is a real home doctor. Scientists have proven that it has the ability to take the negative energy of a person onto itself and “patch” holes in the aura.

At the next position in the top we are considering are decorative birds: parrots and canaries. They delight their owner with melodious singing or the ability to imitate human speech, bright plumage and cheerfulness. Domestic birds are very smart creatures and quickly become attached to the owner and household members.

Aquarium fish are only slightly inferior to tropical birds living in an apartment. This is the same exotic, although completely silent. Fish are no less beautiful, and their ability to surf the water expanses, shimmering in the light, is simply mesmerizing: you can watch such pets for hours and not get bored. They, like birds, need care, which consists in regular feeding, cleaning the “house”, and also changing the water.

Russian homes welcome hamsters and guinea pigs. They love to play, so these animals in the cage should install special shells or purchase a “house” with ready-made devices of this kind. Slightly less often they give birth to rabbits, white rats and ferrets. Fluffy bunnies are not very active when their freedom is limited. But as soon as they are released into the wild, at least into a room, they immediately begin to jump and jump, which delights observers. Children are especially happy with rabbits. Rats are dynamic animals and do not cause disgust at all. Ferrets are mischievous, super active and curious – they are interested in everything, they need to crawl everywhere.

Make more time for your pets on World Pet Day. Let them feel how much you love them!

Deputy Obukhov is outraged that they listened to Medvedev like canaries on Viennese chairs

11:57

November 13, 2009

Communist Sergey Obukhov is outraged by the conditions in which members of the government and the State Duma also listened to the message Dmitry Medvedev to the Federal Assembly, RIA Novosti reports.

On Thursday, the President of Russia delivered his annual address to the Federal Assembly. This was his second address to Parliament.

Speaking at a plenary meeting of the State Duma, a representative of the Communist Party faction proposed to give a protocol instruction to the committee on regulations so that the relevant committee would provide information on the status of this event.

“If this is a joint session of the chambers, why is it opened and closed twice not by the chairman of one of the chambers, but by the announcer?” Obukhov said.

“Why are there no working conditions? At least those that were in the Marble Hall,” the communist added.

He noted that “deputies, like canaries, are forced to take notes on Viennese chairs.”

According to Obukhov, even the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, the leader of the party of the parliamentary majority “United Russia” Vladimir Putin was forced “to write down the president’s orders on a Viennese chair.

The announcement of the message, like last year, took place in the Georgievsky Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace (BKD). Members of the government, the State Council, heads of courts, the Prosecutor General’s Office, confessions and public associations were invited to it.

BKD is the main residence of the head of state. It hosts inauguration ceremonies for the president, presentation of credentials by foreign ambassadors, and festive receptions. Georgievsky – the largest and solemn hall of the palace. It was named after one of the most honorable royal awards – the military order of St. George, established in 1769 by Empress Catherine II.–0–

Weather in Thailand in November: temperature, amount of rain

November is considered the end of the rainy season in Thailand. The sky is gradually clearing, the winds are calming down and the tourist season opens in the Kingdom. However, the territory of Thailand is quite large and in some regions the rainy season recedes earlier, while in others later. Therefore, in November it is important to choose the right resort for your holiday. From this article you will find out what the weather is like in Thailand in November and which resort is better to go to. nine0005

Weather

At the end of autumn, Thailand gradually leaves the wet season. But the monsoons do not disappear instantly, so the weather conditions at the beginning and end of November can differ in many ways. In the first half of November, the rainy season is still well felt: it often rains, the sky is cloudy, the winds blow. In the second half of the month, much less rain falls in most parts of the country, large waves on the sea rise less and less, the weather gradually becomes sunny and clear. The average air temperature during the day in November is +31 degrees Celsius, at night it drops to +23-+25. nine0005

However, as mentioned above, the weather conditions in Thailand depend on the chosen resort. If on the mainland in November there are more sunny days, then on many islands there is still wet and cloudy weather. Let’s look at the weather at the most popular resorts in Thailand.

The weather in Pattaya improves significantly in November. Even at the beginning of the month, there is much less precipitation, and by the end of November it becomes very small. According to statistics in Pattaya in the last month of autumn, there are 7-8 rainy days. Daytime air temperature is kept at +30-+32 degrees Celsius, at night the air cools down to +24. The same weather is typical for Bangkok in November. nine0005

The weather on Koh Samui in November leaves much to be desired. In this resort, the last month of autumn is the rainiest. November weather on Koh Samui and other islands of the Gulf of Thailand (Phangan, Koh Tao) is characterized by prolonged downpours, strong winds, storms and floods often occur.

The rainy season ends in Phuket and other Andaman resorts in November. The closer to the end of the month, the more sunny and dry days. The weather in Phuket in November gradually becomes clear, the sea becomes much calmer. nine0005

As for the north of Thailand, in November there is cloudy weather here, it rains quite rarely. The air temperature during the day is about +28 degrees Celsius, at night it is quite cool – up to +19.

With the retreat of the rainy season in Thailand, air humidity returns to normal. The stuffiness gradually disappears and breathing becomes much easier.

Beach holidays

At the beginning of November you can still see high waves on the sea. However, the closer to the end of the month, the sea becomes calmer. This is especially evident in the resorts of the Andaman Sea. On the beaches of Phuket, red flags are gradually disappearing, informing about the dangers in the sea. More and more vacationers are on the beaches. nine0005

In Pattaya, in November, the beach season opens and tourists are increasingly flooding the sea coast. However, the beaches of Pattaya are not very clean and picturesque, so most beach lovers prefer to go to neighboring islands. The sea in Pattaya at the end of autumn is quite calm and you can fully enjoy a beach holiday.

The beaches of Koh Samui and other nearby islands are practically deserted in November. During this month, the island not only has frequent long rains, but also strong winds blow that raise waves. The sea becomes muddy and dirty, swimming in it is unpleasant and unsafe. nine0005

The water temperature in November is ideal for swimming – +27 degrees Celsius. On sunny days, spending time at the sea is a pleasure.

Where is the best place to relax in November?

At the end of autumn, the weather in Thailand slowly recovers and the tourist season opens. This month it is good to relax in Pattaya, Bangkok and in the north of Thailand. The most favorable weather for recreation is at the end of November. You can also have a good rest in Phuket on the 20th of the month. At this time, the sea becomes much calmer, you can swim all day long, go on sea excursions. nine0005

I do not recommend traveling in November to the southern region of the Gulf of Thailand, where the resorts of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are located. In this part of the country, the rainy season is in full swing and can last until the end of January.

And if it is difficult for you to choose a resort, then read my article, where I told in detail where it is better to relax in Thailand.

Prices

In November, you can still have a budget holiday in Thailand. At the beginning of the month, prices for tours are still low season, but the closer to the end of November, the higher the cost of tours becomes.

Holidays in Lanzarote

Delightful days and wonderful (sometimes weird) treasures await you on this intriguing island. Otherworldly landscapes transport you to a far-off planet, as black and red rocks take your imagination to new heights. You’ll be pinching yourself in disbelief! With so many ways to while away the days, the only question is how you’re going to fit it all in!?

From nature reserves to catching some surf, there’s something for everyone on a Lanzarote holiday. Get on board with unbeatable coastal conditions and try your hand at kitesurfing, bodyboarding, jet skiing, banana boating and kayaking… to name a few. The sky’s the limit, especially if you’re brave enough to have a go at flyboarding! For those that prefer their feet planted firmly on dry land, trade sea for sand and make the most of this Canary Island’s picture-perfect shores and beautiful beaches.

Weather

Off the west coast of Africa, Lanzarote is known for its warm climate. Reaching highs of 29°C in summer, the island is heated by the Sahara Desert. A cool breeze from the north helps to keep the island from overheating.

Things to do in Lanzarote

With more sites to see than hours in the day, get ready to fall in love with this Canary Island getaway. Packed to the brim with things to do while you’re out and about – Lanzarote offers a world of adventure and excitement to its visitors. Catch a wave along the coast at one of the many surfing schools, or try out the aqua park at Costa Teguise for a fun-packed family day! Visit Fundación César Manrique, built in to volcanic bubbles in the rock, which is now home to a huge collection of artwork from world famous artists – including Picasso himself. Take a trip to the old capital of Teguise and visit the local market, or explore the Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua. An underground lake and stunning complex of caves.

And if all that wasn’t enough, you can set sail for the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura on a glass bottomed catamaran. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for pods of playful dolphins on the way. Different species can be seen year-round, so there’s never a bad time to go!

Of course we’ve only scratched the surface, there’s plenty more things to do on your Lanzarote villa holiday.

Best Beaches in Lanzarote

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ when you’re planning the perfect beach day, but that’s okay in Lanzarote! North to South the shores are fringed with every kind of coastline imaginable. Whether you’re after a laid-back day of lounging beneath the sun, or you and the kids are after some waterpark fun, you’ll be spoilt for choice on this Canary Island. Take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters, or ride the waves and try your hand at windsurfing. And why not finish up at one of the delicious restaurants nearby? All that fun in the sun means you’ve worked up an appetite!

The Best Beaches in Lanzarote

Eating in Lanzarote

Roots in Spanish cooking, as well as African and Latin American influences, makes for some mouth-wateringly memorable meals! A visit to Lanzarote wouldn’t be complete without a taste of tapas. Dozens of delicious dishes are served up in small portions – so fill your boots and see how many you can sample! Keep an eye out for some of our favourites, traditional papas arrogadas (new potatoes cooked in their skins) served with local mojo sauce and calamares en su tinta (squid in their own black ink).

If you fancy tucking into something a little bigger, there’s a whole host of restaurants that serve a variety of cuisine. Fussy eaters are covered with familiar UK and American dishes, but let’s keep things traditional for the more experimental among us. Canarians are big on stews, putting a lot of love into creating delicious pots of spiced meats and vegetables. Blessed with glorious year-round sunshine, the islanders have a wealth of fresh fruit and vegetables that make the perfect accompaniment to their flavoursome food. If you like fish, you’ll love Lanzarote. Being an island there’s a never ending seafood supply, so tuck in to the catch of the day and tantalise those taste buds. Fortunately Lanzarote locals seem to have a sweet tooth, after all, dessert is the best bit right? Grab a bite of traditional frangollo or torrijas to finish up.

Shopping in Lanzarote

There’s plenty of places to loosen those purse strings in Lanzarote. The bigger resorts are home to large shopping centres where you’ll find your favourite retail chains, not to mention some of the best buys on the island thanks to duty free items. Away from the mainstream malls, there are meandering, narrow streets lined with quaint shops and boutiques full of one-of-a-kind trinkets and treasures. The real magic happens at the markets, Teguise is the oldest and largest of them all, and occasionally even has Canarian dancers and music! Here you can haggle over unique gifts, craft items and special souvenirs. Grab yourself some local produce for some extra special tasty keepsakes – although we’re not sure how long they’ll last! Keeping your villa fully stocked while in Lanzarote is a breeze. Several large hypermarkets are spread out across the island, so you’ll never run out of poolside snacks or mid-morning munches.

Driving in Lanzarote

There’s no feeling quite as freeing as a road trip! Explore at your own pace with a hire car, and squeeze in as much sightseeing as your heart desires. If you want to spend some extra time strolling along soft sands, who’s to tell you otherwise? Want to linger a little longer and wait for the sun to set? No problem! There are plenty of driving tours available to help you find the perfect route. Whether it’s the lunar landscape of Timanfaya National Park or the beautiful beaches along the coastal roads – buckle up and tailor your travels to make the most of Lanzarote’s breathtaking views.

Festivals and Events

A huge amount of unique festivals take place in specific towns and villages throughout the year in Lanzarote. Lively street parties and traditional celebrations provide show stopping entertainment for all ages! Dance the days away with the locals, and enjoy flamboyant and colourful parades of fantastic costumes and floats. Carnival is the most attended festival on the island with a different theme every year. It runs for a whopping four weeks in February and March and ends on Ash Wednesday with ‘El entierro de la Sardinas’.

Melia Salinas Hotel (Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain))

The fourth largest island of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote, located off the coast of Africa, surprises and attracts with its unusual landscape and color contrasts. In 1730-1736, Lanzarote was shaken by a six-year-long volcanic eruption that irreversibly changed both the island and the everyday life of its inhabitants. A large amount of fertile land and settlements were buried under an abundant layer of lava, part of the territory was covered with a thick layer of dust. nine0003

The powerful force of nature has thus created an amazing view and incredible contrasts that delight everyone who comes to Lanzarote. In some places on the island, it may seem as if you are on the moon: craters and caves of volcanic origin rise here. There are many unusual black rocks that rinse the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. But here, a few kilometers away, there are also long white sandy beaches, some of which are marked with the Blue Flag. They are ready to receive tourists all year round. Along the coast, the cities and towns are rich in heritage from the time when, due to volcanoes, the life of the island belonging to Spain was not different. Restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops are located in these towns in the shade of palm trees, and life is seething. nine0003

Lanzarote is a small island. The length of the island from south to north is 60 km, from the western to eastern coasts a little more than 20 km. The coastline is about 213 km, most of it is covered with rocks. The climate of Lanzarote is similar to that of North Africa. Warmth and sun pamper the island all year round. In January and February, the air temperature during the day reaches an average of 22 degrees, at night it drops to 14 degrees. From June to August, the thermometer rises to an average of 29 degrees, and sometimes almost up to 40 degrees. The water temperature ranges from 17 to 24 degrees. The sun shines on the island 300 days a year, and rain is a rare guest, most often appearing only in November – March. nine0003

Lanzarote doesn’t have very lush greenery, only palm trees, olive trees and cacti. However, in the central part of the island, for example, in the La Geria area, the locals have found a way to grow the grapes from which Lanzarote’s Malvasia wine is made. In order to accumulate moisture and protect the grapes from the wind, each plant sits in a hole, the depth and diameter of which reaches several meters, enclosed by a semicircular stone fence (zoco). The oldest wine cellar on the island, El Grifo (18th century), still produces 400-600 thousand bottles of wine per year. It also has a wine museum. Lanzarote is also a supplier of fish and goat cheese, and salt has long been mined in the south of the island. nine0003

The island will appeal to those who are looking for not only a relaxing holiday by the blue ocean, but also a lot of interesting, unusual adventures. This is a great place for family holidays, couples. There are many different places to visit and monuments on the island – many of them were created by the famous architect of the island, Cesar Manrique. It is difficult to find a place on the island in the improvement of which he would not take part.

The Atlantic wind in Lanzarote creates excellent conditions for water activities, warm water allows you to enjoy swimming, diving, surfing and windsurfing, kitesurfing, etc. Fishing is also popular on the island. Many resorts are convenient for cycling, walking, hiking or playing golf, for which the weather here is favorable all year round. nine0003

Arrecife

Located in the center of the east coast of the island, Arrecife is the largest city of Lanzarote and its capital, as well as a financial and cultural center founded in the 19th century. It became the capital in 1852. Currently, more than half of all the inhabitants of the island live here.

Arrecife has long been an important trading point of the island. Guests of the city notice this, as there are many shopping centers, specialized shops, souvenir and handicraft shops. Various goods of local artisans are offered, and even those imported due to more favorable conditions applied to the island are sold at fairly low prices. nine0003

Arrecife also attracts tourists with its coastline, which is full of islands and reefs formed by lava flows. You can admire them while walking along the alleys. Witnesses of the history of the city and the island are two fortresses. One of them – Castillo de San Gabriel (Castillo San Gabriel) – rises on a tiny rocky island, which is connected to the coast by a drawbridge. Exactly where the main metropolitan shopping streets Leon and Castillo (Leon y Castillo) end. The bridge is decorated with two towers, on top of which there is a cannonball each. This fort was built by King Philip II to protect himself from pirates sailing from North Africa. Another city fortress, Castillo de San Jose, had the same purpose. Today it houses the Museum of Modern Art. nine0003

Another of the most visited sites is Charo de San Gines. It is a lake formed by inflowing sea water, surrounded by fishermen’s houses. Next to it stands the main city church of San Gines. A particularly amazing view nearby opens in the evening, when the lake is illuminated by the setting sun.

Fire Mountains, Timanfaya

After volcanic eruptions lasting six years, and another blow in 1824, part of the island in the northwest became an unrecognizable place filled with lava and pulsing with heat. To protect it, the Timanfaya National Park, also called the fiery mountains, was created. This is the most visited place in Lanzarote, attracting about a million people every year. You can explore Timanfaya on the buses of the park, it is forbidden to travel on foot or with your own transport. And it’s not recommended. At a depth of only 13 m, the temperature is about 600 degrees. The network of roads among the rocks, which in some places reach an impressive size of several meters, was formed by the architect César Manrique. The surface of the earth resembles the moon – it is a colorful, hard-covered desert covered with petrified lava. It is estimated that now more than 30 volcanoes rise in the park. At the end of the path, at the highest point of the island, is the El Diablo restaurant, where dishes are cooked using heat rising from the depths of the earth. Park officials demonstrate how unusually hot the ground is under their feet: poured water into a pipe dug into the ground turns into a geyser, dry grass thrown into a small hole ignites. The park also offers another impressive entertainment – a camel tour. At 1993 this park is included in the UNESCO heritage list.

Jameos del Agua

In the sixth decade of the last century, Cesar Manrique decided to create a unique tourist attraction. Near one of the lava caves (Jameo Chico) extending to the northeast, he built a staircase down and around a small natural lake in the rock equipped with an impressive bar and restaurant, sometimes even called the most beautiful nightclub in the world. The restaurant offers tourists not only to sit down for a while, but also to spend the evening on the dance floor to the sounds of Spanish music. True, it is not the cheapest on the island. The water of the lake and the surrounding reservoirs is very transparent, only blind albino crabs that live on this island, which have become the symbol of Jameos del Agua, are visible in it. Next to the cave-restaurant, the architect built a modern villa with a very cozy garden. Jameos del Agua is located near one of the most impressive and longest caves in the world, Los Verdes, which was formed 4,000 years ago by an erupting volcano. Under the ground here stretches a tunnel of 6 km. For many centuries, such tunnels for the inhabitants of Lanzarote were a refuge from the excesses of pirates, and since 1964 he is open to tourists. For those who are curious, this miracle of nature can be viewed accompanied by guides.

Cactus garden

The Cactus Garden (Jardin de Cactus) is a good example of how well architecture can fit into the landscape.
