Latvian farmland among cheapest in Europe / Article

Authors:
Eng. LSM.lv (Latvian Public Broadcasting)

Farmland in Latvia is some of the cheapest to purchase in the European Union, according to Eurostat data published Deceber 21.

The price of one hectare of arable land in 2021 ranged from a low of €3 661 on average in Croatia to €47 290 on average in tiny Luxembourg, among the nineteen EU Member States for which 2021 data are available. This range is likely to be even wider, as the average price of one hectare of arable land in the Netherlands was €71 225 in 2020.

Latvia comes out with the third-cheapest land among countries surveyed, with a price of €4 331 per hectare, making it slightly cheaper than both Estonia (€4 383) and Lithuania (€4 667).

At the regional level, the highest prices for arable land were in the Spanish Canary Islands (an average €120 477 per hectare). By contrast, the lowest was in the Swedish region of Övre Norrland (an average €1 882).

The price of one hectare of permanent grassland in 2021 ranged from a low of €1 423 on average in Bulgaria to €41 930 on average in Luxembourg, and was as much as €59 065 on average in the Netherlands in 2020. Again, Latvia was at the cheaper end of the scale with a price of €2 752.

In most EU regions for which data are available, buying arable land was more expensive than buying permanent grassland. It was a little over twenty times more expensive on average on the Greek islands of the North Aegean region (arable land: €37 926 and permanent grassland: €1 744) and in the Spanish region of Murcia (arable land: €20 445 and permanent grassland: €982). The Spanish regions of Asturias (€8 096 / €9 536), Madrid (€7 621 / €7 946) and the Lithuanian region of Sostinės (€3 805 /€4 055), stand out as exceptions.

The level of land prices depends on a number of factors; these include national factors (like laws), regional factors (like climate and proximity to networks) and localised productivity factors (such as soil quality, slope or drainage). The market forces of supply and demand, including the influence of foreign ownership rules, can also influence the price of agricultural land. Latvia does have a law linking language ability to farmland purchases where foreigners are concerned, as previously reported by LSM.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts on behalf of the European Commission with funding from the EU, routinely publishes monthly climate bulletins reporting on the changes observed in global surface air temperature, sea ice cover and hydrological variables. All the reported findings are based on computer-generated analyses using billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations around the world.

November 2022 – temperature highlights:

  • The global average temperature for November 2022 was nearly 0.2°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for November.
  • This was cooler globally than the Novembers of 2012 and 2015-2021, but warmer than all other Novembers.
  • November 2022 was just below 1.4°C warmer than average over Europe.
  • This was the fifth warmest November over Europe.
  • Temperatures were much warmer than average over the west, south-east and far north-east of Europe.
  • Europe experienced its third warmest autumn in 2022 at 1°C above normal. Temperatures were particularly high over the west of the continent.

November 2022 – Sea ice highlights:

  • Arctic sea ice extent was 3% below average, ranking 8th lowest for November in the satellite record and remaining well above the lowest November values recorded in 2016 and 2020.
  • Antarctic sea ice extent was the fifth lowest for November in the 44-year satellite data record, at 5% below average, close to November values recorded on four occasions since 2017.
  • As in previous months, sea ice concentrations around Antarctica displayed a marked contrast between much below-average concentrations in the Bellingshausen Sea and much above-average concentrations in the Amundsen and Ross Seas

Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of C3S said:

“Europe has just had its fifth warmest November on record, just below 1.4°C warmer than average temperature. Additionally, temperatures over many ocean regions were mild, particularly in the northern European seas and North Atlantic. Other marine areas that experienced above-average surface air temperature include the western Mediterranean and most of the oceans neighbouring Antarctica. C3S is observing closely how these trends in above-average temperatures develop. ”

Last month was another unusually warm month, as the planet saw its ninth-warmest November on record.

Looking at the Arctic and Antarctic, both poles had their top-10 lowest November sea ice coverage on record.

Below are more highlights from NOAA’s November global climate report:

Climate by the numbers

November 2022

The average global land and ocean surface temperature for November 2022 was 1. 37 degrees F (0.76 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average. This ranks as the ninth-warmest November in 143 years, but the coolest November since 2014.

November 2022 marked the 46th consecutive November and the 455th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th-century average.

Europe tied 2000 for its third-warmest November on record. South America, Asia and Africa each had a November that ranked among their 20 warmest on record. North America had a warmer-than-average November, but it did not rank among its top-20 warmest.

Season (September through November) and year to date

The season (meteorological spring or autumn, depending on the hemisphere) saw an average global land and ocean temperature of 1.51 degrees F (0.84 of a degree C) above the average of 57.1 degrees F (14 degrees C). This ties with September through November of 2016 and 2018 as the fifth-warmest such season in the climate record.

The year to date (YTD, January through November) global land and ocean surface temperature was 1. 55 degrees F (0.86 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average, making it the sixth-warmest YTD on record.

According to NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook, there is a greater than 99% chance that 2022 will rank among the 10-warmest years on record but a less than 1% chance that it will rank among the top five.

A map of the world plotted with some of the most significant climate events that occurred during November 2022. Please see the story below as well as more details in the report summary from NOAA NCEI at http://bit.ly/Global202211 offsite link. (NOAA NCEI)

Record warm November in Russia and the Northern Hemisphere of the planet

Material Information

since 1891. At any weather station in the country, the recorded average monthly air temperature has exceeded the norm. nine0011

Temperature anomaly, November 2013, Russia

The average anomaly amounted to almost +5º, and in certain areas of the Urals, Siberia, the south of the Far Eastern region and on the Arctic Islands in the Arctic Sea in the Karskoyed Sea in the Karskaya Sea in the Karskaya Sea exceeded +8º. In the Urals and in the south of the Far East, it was the warmest November in history, in the Volga region – the second, and in the north of the European territory, in Central Russia and Siberia – the third warmest. nine0011

The whole autumn in general turned out to be abnormally warm in Russia. And this despite the cold September. Warm weather in October and especially in November caused a major seasonal anomaly in most of the country (more than +2º), and in Taimyr and the Arctic islands more than 3-4º. Only in the south of Russia and in the north of the Far East did the autumn temperature turn out to be close to the norm, and in some places even lower.

Temperature anomaly, autumn 2013, Northern Hemisphere

November 2013 was abnormally warm not only in Russia, but almost everywhere in Eurasia and North Africa. Only in Central Asia, in India, Japan, in the extreme west of Europe, it turned out to be close to the norm, and in some places even colder than usual. The anomalously warm Eastern Hemisphere was in opposition to the cold Western Hemisphere, where in most of the United States and Canada the monthly average air temperature was normal or less. The presence of large positive anomalies in the east of the Northern Hemisphere led to the fact that the past month entered the top three of the warmest Novembers in the hemisphere, and the average temperature of January-November 2013. has rank 4-6 among the highest values for this period from 1891 г.

MegaFon has completed a new stage of modernization of the telecom infrastructure in St. Petersburg – the operator has expanded the 900 MHz frequency band used for data transmission by 1.5 times. This decision made it possible to improve the main parameters of the network: capacity and throughput, as well as to increase subscriber speeds by up to 20%. More than 1,200 MegaFon communications facilities in the northern capital were upgraded during the project implementation. Such a number of upgraded base stations provided even denser 4G coverage in the region. LTE communication…

La gomera weather november: La gomera, Spain – November Weather

La gomera, Spain – November Weather

Located in the Atlantic location, off the west coast of Africa, lies the island of La Gomera. This wonderful holiday destination is one of the Canary Islands and is actually one of the smallest islands in the group, with a much more peaceful vibe than that of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, for example. Instead, La Gomera attracts travelers with its beautiful mountain scenery and a wide range of walking and hiking trails.

What’s The Weather Like In La Gomera In November

      Temperature

As a result of its location, La Gomera has a typically sub-tropical climate with great weather all year round. November is late autumn on the island, and with winter on its way, the island sees slightly cooler weather than the months before. The average daily temperature is still pleasant at 21°C, though low temperatures can fall to 18°C on an evening. High temperatures hover around 24°C in November. Compared to other parts of Europe at this time of year temperatures in La Gomera are favourable, making it a great winter sunshine destination.

      Sunshine Hours

While the amount of sunshine each day declines in November, you can still expect a good amount of brightness and it is still possible to hit the beach. The island is blessed with an average of nine hours of sunshine on any given day and there’s a 39% chance of a sunny day.

      Sea Temperature

It is still possible to take a dip in the ocean in November too. The Atlantic retains some of its summer heat into November, and the shores around La Gomera remain warm at 23°C.

      Rain

One of the biggest disadvantages of visiting La Gomera in November is that it is the wettest month of the year. The island receives around 165mm of precipitation throughout November and there’s around 13 wet days. While this may sound like a lot, there’s still only a 10% chance of rain during this month, so holiday makers should definitely see some dry days on their visit.

      La Gomera Hotels In November

      Los Telares

Ideally located in Hermigua, on the northern half of La Gomera, Los Telares is an idyllic hotel with spectacular views.  This hard-to-find resort is worth the hike into the hills and forest for the additional privacy and peaceful ambience that it offers. The other guests in this hotel are likely to be adventurers and nature enthusiasts based on the hotel’s locale. Hermigua is a spread-out small town so if you’d like to make regular visits to local cities, you are better off renting a car to make the trek.

      Hotel Villa Gomera

For those who prefer to stay at the centre of the action, Hotel Villa Gomera is located in the heart of San Sebastian de la Gomera. Just a 6 minute walk from the pier and a 3 minute walk from the Museo Arqueológico de La Gomera, this friendly, family-run hotel makes a great base for exploring the area. This no-frills hotel is great value for money.

      La Gomera Beaches For November

With warm weather and sunshine still gracing the island, it is possible to hit La Gomera’s beaches, even in November. For some reason, the locals tend to stay away from the island’s beaches in autumn and winter, so tourists will be able to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere.

      Charco del Conde

La Gomera has many beautiful bays and sandy stretches all over the island, including one of its most popular beaches, Charco del Conde in Valle Gran Rey. This small cove is protected by green hills and has safe, shallow waters for swimming and splashing around. The beach is popular with families and children, giving it the nickname of Baby-Beach.

      Bars And Restaurants

      Casa Conchita

Casa Conchita is one of the best places on the island to experience the true taste of Canarian cuisine. Sitting high in the hills of Arure, above Valle Gran Rey, it is worth the journey up there for the traditional Gomerian dishes on offer such as fresh fish and pork with Canarian potatoes. The house menu is exceptionally good value for money.

      Restaurante la Marea

A great option for the whole family, Restaurante la Marea has a budget-friendly menu to suit all tastes. The Italian restaurant serves homemade pasta and pizza dishes, though the fresh fish of the day is the star of the show. Located in Playa de Santiago, Restaurante la Marea is tucked away from the main square, down a quiet side street but within walking distance of the beach.

      Restaurant Abraxas

Travelers with a sweet tooth should make time to visit Restaurant Abraxas by the beach in Valle Gran Rey. Homemade hazelnut cake is their specialty, alongside hot waffles with various toppings. There’s also a good selection of savory food options as well as beer, wine, cocktails and liqueur, making it a great choice for any occasion.

Things To Do In La Gomera In November

      Day of the Dead

November is the month where the Spanish-speaking world, including the Canary Islands, celebrates the Day of the Dead. This day in early November remembers loved ones lost as individuals bring flowers and gifts to the graves of their friends and family members. While often confused as a Spanish version of Halloween, this day is actually much more respectful and serious in tone.

      Timah

If you’d like to explore the island as it is meant to be seen, consider booking a trip with one of the local walking and hiking tour companies, like Timah. This particular company offers a variety of paths and trails, depending on your ability and what parts of La Gomera you would like to explore. The guides are knowledgeable about what paths to take as well as the flora and fauna of the island so you can learn while you explore.

Best Time For A Mediterranean Cruise

      Learn more about Mediterranean cruises

Summer, fall and spring are the best times for Mediterranean cruises. Rome’s Colosseum is gorgeous in the fall. Dubrovnik comes alive in summer. A Greece cruise in spring brings warm Ionian breezes and bougainvillea bursting from windowsills. You can’t go wrong with a Mediterranean cruise any time of the cruise season, but certain months are better than others depending on what you want to experience. During winter there are few options for cruises and many places close for the season.

When is cruise season in the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean cruise season begins in spring (May) and lasts until late fall (November). There are pros and cons of each time of year to visit the Mediterranean. Often, if you visit in high season, you will have better weather and more open attractions, but thicker crowds. Shoulder season is the time right before or after high season. In terms of Mediterranean cruises, shoulder season would be spring or fall.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit the Mediterranean?

      Mediterranean cruises in Spring
Spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. The seas are calmer by May and the temperatures start to climb into the mid-70s, which is a great temp for open-air plazas and beaches. The crowds will be thinner, as most kids aren’t out of school yet.

Pros: You’ll have more room at major attractions, as kids are still in school and families start vacationing in June.

Cons: Depending on where you cruise, water temps may be brisk for a swim in the sapphire seas.

      Mediterranean Cruises in Summer
School is out, which makes summer the best time to cruise the Mediterranean for families with tight schedules. It is also the best time for those who like it hot. Really hot. Temperatures in Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia will be in the 90s, but the tranquil ocean waters invite a cool off. August is a popular vacation time for locals in Rome and there may be some closed shops and attractions. Summer is also peak season, so expect hordes of tourists everywhere.

Pros: A great time to hit the beaches. Sunny and dry weather.

Cons: Peak season means more tourists. In August in Italy, some shops may be closed for vacations.

      Mediterranean cruises in Fall
Fall is a considered the best time to cruise the Mediterranean for cultural excursions without the crowds. September and October are part of the shoulder season, when kids go back to school and vacation prices dip. The sun won’t be quite as fierce, which makes walking the hills of Santorini or the winding streets of Rome a much more enjoyable experience. The crowds will have thinned out and you’ll have more space to enjoy popular attractions such as Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Fall harvest season means more wine festivals and Food and Wine® Tours.

Pros: Less crowds, cheaper prices, more food festivals for harvest season.

Cons: More rain showers. Some shops and restaurants close in fall, once peak season is over.

Is November a Good Time to Cruise the Mediterranean?
October and November are at the very end of the Mediterranean cruise season. Don’t expect hot, sunny beach weather but cooler temps in the 40s to low 70s Fahrenheit. Anticipate more rainy days and waves. Winter in the Mediterranean is mild, but some shops may close in preparation for the upcoming season. October and November are known for some of the best discounts and deals.

Athens in November: Travel Tips, Weather, and More

      Weather

The weather in Athens in November can be a mixed bag—some days are cold and rainy while others have bright, sunny skies overhead. The temperatures average about 59°F (15°C) with highs of 64°F (18°C ) and lows of 54°F (12°C). At nighttime, the colder air rolls in so it’s important to bring a warm jacket and other cold-weather gear.

In terms of rainfall, the month gets eight about days of precipitation on average. This isn’t a huge amount compared to other locations in Europe but it’s Athens’ second rainiest month. Rainstorms don’t occur every day but the city gets scattered showers so it’s a good idea to have a raincoat, too.

One of the biggest changes this time of year is that water temperature drops significantly, hitting an average of 68°F (20°C) and making it too cold to swim comfortably.

For more on weather this month, see Greece in November: Travel Tips, Weather, and More.

      Crowds and Costs

Whatever November lacks in weather, it makes up for in the sheer lack of crowds. It’s a month that falls between seasons—the warm summer and fall has passed but Christmas and the winter holidays haven’t yet arrived. For this reason, it’s one of the best times to visit Athens without dealing with large tourist numbers. It’s also a time when hotels switch to shoulder season and low-season prices so you can find good deals on lodging. These costs often spill into airfare, too.

      Where to Go

Athens is wonderfully empty throughout most of the city in November and the temperatures are the same pretty much everywhere. That means you can enjoy a wide variety of activities, depending on your interests. The Acropolis and its archaeological ruins are excellent stops for history lovers while folks interested in art and culture can check out the many museums and art galleries. There’s also a great food scene in Athens with a blend of chic restaurants and traditional food stalls.

Outside of the main metropolis you’ll find a number of destinations that make good day trips, too. Delphi, for example, which is about two hours outside of town, boasts archaeological ruins in the mountains where the ancient Greeks used to consult an oracle. In the other direction is the Attica wine region which participates in the annual European Day of Wine Tourism every November. This is an excellent time to take a wine tour or drop by some of the well-regarded tasting rooms.

If you’re someone who enjoys skiing or snowboarding, the nearby mountains have a handful of ski resorts that begin getting snow in November—Mount Parnassus, for example, has the Parnassos Ski Resort while Mount Helmos has the Kalavrita Ski Center. Just be sure to check that they’re operating before you go since opening dates change from year to year.

      What to Do

In Athens proper, start your journey by visiting the Acropolis. This archaeological wonderland holds many of the first buildings of ancient civilization. Among the many famous structures include the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion, and others. When you’re done there, continue on to museums and art galleries such as Radio Athènes, the Museum of Cycladic Art, or the National Museum of Contemporary Art. In the evening, check out some of the foodie spots for dinner. Monastiraki and Psyrri offer traditional markets and food carts while the Exarhia neighborhood has more eclectic bars and restaurants.

In Delphi, it’s a good time to check out the Sanctuary of Apollo (sometimes called the Oracle of Apollo) where ancient Greeks erected a temple in what they believed was the center of the world. They used the space to pay tribute to the god Apollo and confer with the oracle (known as Pythia).

If you make it over to Attica, check out the Papagiannakos Winery or take a tour with Attica Wine and Food Experience (AWAFE).

      Events in November

Athens Marathon (changes dates): This international runner’s event takes place in Athens every November, drawing huge crowds of athletes from around the world. The course, which has attracted more than 40,000 runners in the past, is based on the famous story of Pheidippides, an ancient Greek messenger who ran to Athens from the Battle of Marathon to tell the people the Greeks had defeated the Persians.

European Day of Wine Tourism / Wine Tourism Day (dates change): This oenophile’s holiday is organized by folks from the wine industry as well as various tourism boards. In Greece, the international celebration typically involves special events at wineries in Attica and other vineyards throughout the country.

4 seasons in the Mediterranean, or Why Mediterranean cruises are wonderful at any time of the year

The Mediterranean climate is so unique that it has been given a separate place among the planet’s climatic zones. Countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea boast mild winters and hot summers, which makes them so attractive to tourists. Spain, Italy, France, Malta and a number of other countries located in the Mediterranean climate are ideal for a cruise holiday at any time of the year. Below we will tell you about the features of each season in the Mediterranean so that you can choose the best time to travel. nine0003

      Winter

Winter in the Mediterranean countries is mild with average temperatures in the range of +5 – +10°C. On the southern islands (Malta, Sicily), the average temperature in December can reach +15°С. Below zero, the readings on the thermometer drop extremely rarely, and even if this happens, the frosts do not last long.

There is an opinion that the winter in the Mediterranean is not the season for tourism. This is debatable! For a beach holiday, of course, it’s not the season, but for excursions, shopping and long walks in the fresh air and along deserted beaches, it’s the most season. Agree, studying the cultural and historical heritage of the Mediterranean is much more pleasant in cool weather than during sweltering heat, when all thoughts are only about the sea and the beach. nine0003

In addition, in winter you can avoid excessive tourist crowds and enjoy a relaxing holiday. Experienced travelers advise visiting the Mediterranean countries in winter in December, on the eve of the Christmas holidays, when the cities are just preparing for the bulk of guests for the holidays, or in February, when the festive turmoil has already had time to subside.

It is on the eve of Catholic Christmas that we invite everyone to plunge into the atmosphere of the holiday, walk along the decorated streets of cozy Mediterranean towns, make delicious purchases for the New Year’s table at Christmas markets, immerse yourself in the world of history and art of Antonio Gaudi, Van Gogh, Salvador Dali… We invite you to cruise around Italy, Spain, Malta and France on the newest 2017 megaliner MSC Meraviglia. Departure from Kyiv 9December 2017. Price per person from 999 euros; flights, hotel and transfers included. Tour of Genoa – as a GIFT! PROMOTION! When booking a cabin with a balcony, tickets to the show of the circus “Du Soleil” – as a GIFT! Hurry up to book group cruise tour “Inauguration cruise on the eve of the Catholic Christmas: the charm of pre-holiday Mediterranean towns” , the number of places is limited!

      Spring

Spring in the Mediterranean region is a song. A song about the awakening of nature, bright colors and excellent sunny weather. In March and April, the weather is still quite cool and pleasant, with temperatures up to +15 – +20°C. nine0003

The main goal of a spring trip to the Mediterranean is to see the flourishing cities that wake up after hibernation. At the end of spring, you can already count on a beach holiday, because in May the air temperature warms up to an average of +23°C. Precipitation is rare, and the closer to summer, the less likely it is to rain.

10 Best Things To Do in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands)

My name is Giacomo and I’m a photographer. Welcome to my travel guide on Gran Canaria – a beautiful Canary island that I visited recently for two months as part of an environmental project. I grew up in Pavia, which is a small city near Milan in the north of Italy, and I always yearned to travel. As a child, my parents used to take my brother and I on trips around Europe.

I always looked forward to those trips when I was at school. When I was 18 I traveled to Egypt with my brother and it was the first time I left Europe and got pushed out of my comfort zone. That trip triggered something in me. In September of the same year I started university, encouraged to go by my parents and society as a whole. I consider myself lucky because I enjoyed what I was studying and had time to work to save for my travels as well.

Then I began to read stories from other travelers. Inspired by their stories, I decided to take a trip and so I booked a one-way ticket to Peru. At the time I was 19. I traveled alone to an unknown country. The feeling was one of excitement and fear. In Peru I volunteered for one month in a school in Huancayo and then went backpacking around the country for a couple of months. It was in Peru that I started to develop as a photographer.

Living in Gran Canaria for Two Months

The Canary Islands had been on my bucket list since forever. After a few years of working and volunteering around Europe, doing the most diverse jobs, I wanted to find something that was more aligned with my passion for photography. In Gran Canaria I found a place where I could express my creativity, travel around the island, take photos, create content for an environmental association and meet other photographers along the way.

I fell in love with the island. It had such an incredible variety of landscapes – from impressive cliffs and mountains to vast deserts, and from pine forests to picturesque villages. Simply put, Gran Canaria had it all. I chose to stay for two months and work on this environmental project. Our days were spent trekking around the island and picking up the trash that we found.

We were also collaborating with companies around the islands to promote their business and capture content for them to use on social media. Most of the time I was hiking and taking pictures around Gran Canaria or visiting small villages and hidden beaches. I had the chance to get to know a lot of different places, most of them almost completely unknown by tourists.

There are so many amazing places to discover on the island and such a variety of environments. My favorite spot was a small cave 20 minutes from where we lived. It’s called Cueva del Guincho and it’s located completely off the tourist trail. The path to get there is pretty dangerous though, which is why it’s better to go with a local or somebody that has been there before.

The path to Cueva del Guincho overhangs the sea and you have to pass through an old water pipe to access the cave. The sound of the waves entering the small rift of this massive cave and crushing against the rocks created the most surreal atmosphere I have ever experienced. Below are some photos that I took of the cave. I think you will agree that it’s epic!

10 Best Things To Do in Gran Canaria

      1. Stay at a Hostel in Las Palmas and Go Surfing

Playa de Las Canteras is a beach situated next to Las Palmas (the capital city) and it’s the perfect place to learn how to surf. I recommend going with a company called Buen Surf School. The surf instructors of Buen are super professional and you will have lots of fun. Playa de Las Canteras is also just a great urban beach to enjoy some sunbathing and swimming.

      2. Marvel at the Incredible Dunas de Maspalomas

These sand dunes are located on the south coast of Gran Canaria, just a few meters from the sea. Dunas de Maspalomas is an immensely beautiful and unique landscape. I suggest visiting at sunset for a magical golden hour. The dunes span across a 400 hectare area and are protected under the government as a Nature Reserve. You could easily spend a day here.

      3. Watch the Sunset from Pico de las Nieves

Pico de las Nieves is the highest peak on the island from where you can see Mount Teide in the distance (the highest point in Spain) on the nearby island of Tenerife. If you get lucky you will witness a sea of clouds beneath you. Pico de las Nieves stands at 1,949 meters above sea level. You can reach the peak via a number of routes such as hiking trails, bike paths or by driving up. But I think hiking up is the best option if you enjoy a good trek.

      4. Camp on a Beautiful Wild Beach of Gran Canaria

Camping on the beach in Gran Canaria is such a special experience, especially if you can find a wild beach with no one else around. Sunrise is a breathtaking moment when you get woken up by the gorgeous colors and crisp air of dawn. My favorite beaches for this experience are Playa de las Mujeres, Playa Montana Arena and Playa de Guigui. All wild and free places!

I have so many amazing memories from Gran Canaria with all the incredible people I met but if I had to pick one favorite moment it would be the time we camped at Playa Montana Arena and watched the sunrise. Those moments when you don’t have the Internet and are completely one with the present – sharing time with the people you love and just being grateful for what you have. Does life get any better than that?!

      5. Visit the Most Picturesque Villages of Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is home to some of the most picturesque and colorful towns I have ever seen. Here are my favorite villages that I recommend everyone check out: Tejeda, Teror, Tufia, Arucas, Acusa Seca, Aguimes and Artenara. While these are the most beautiful villages that I visited during my two month stay, I’m sure there are even more places that you could find.

      6. Hike One of the Many “Barrancos” of the Island

A barranco is a deep ravine, gorge or canyon – and in Gran Canaria you can discover many of these wonders. The most scenic ones are Barranco de Guayadeque, Barranco de la Mina, Barranco de las Vacas and Barranco Hondo. All of them are worth visiting. These ravines make for great day hikes where you can stretch the legs and get some sun on your face.

      7. Experience Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival

This is one of the oldest and most famous carnivals of Spain. The event occurs every year in February (apart from exemptions like Covid). Some of the most unique aspects of the Carnival de Las Palmas are the Gala of the Drag Queen and the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos. The six kilometer parade runs around the city and showcases many different floats and festivities.

      8. Discover the Amazing Natural Pools of Agaete

The natural pools of Agaete are another hidden gem of Gran Canaria. They are situated directly on the ocean, so depending on the tides you may have waves crashing right over you or calm water perfect for bathing/swimming. There are three different pools you can hop into and each one is like its own fortress but instead of a castle there is seawater. Definitely a hidden jewel!

      9. Go Diving with Buceo Agaete Dive Center

Gran Canaria is one of the best places to go diving not only in the Canary Islands but in all of Europe. The variety and color of marine life is just outstanding. I can recommend a place that I tried in Agaete called Buceo Agaete Dive Center. They offer a great range of courses for people of all skill levels and experience. Just get in touch and see what they have to offer.

      10. Explore the Variety of Caves in Gran Canaria

Last but not least, I want to highlight the many caves that you can explore in Gran Canaria. My personal favorite ones are Cueva del Guincho (as mentioned), Cueva de San Rafael (which is actually an abandoned water reservoir), Cueva de la Reina Mora and Cueva de Cuatro Puertas. These are cool places to have an adventure and take some interesting photos.

Where to Stay in Gran Canaria

During my travels, I like to stay within a budget and avoid touristy places and expensive hotels. In Gran Canaria I stayed in a house up in the hills, near to Las Palmas, with people that were working on the project with me. Las Palmas is the biggest city where people usually set their base. I met a lot of people that were staying in hostels and I also visited a couple of them.

Ventana Azul Surf Hostel is a pretty sweet spot that offers surf lessons, a large rooftop terrace and an open-air kitchen for cooking. Aguita House is another great option if you want to learn how to surf at their surf school. And Blue Wave Hostel is the place to be if you want to remain on a tight budget while meeting other young backpackers from around the world.

What is the Food Like in Gran Canaria?

Since I’m a vegetarian I missed out on a lot of typical dishes. But I still tried Papas Arrugadas (boiled potatoes with pepper sauce) and Gofio Canario (made with different types of toasted grains like corn and wheat all mashed together in a traditional stone mill). The latter was my favorite. I also had a kitchen in Gran Canaria, so I didn’t eat out much. Being Italian, whenever I was in Las Palmas I stopped by Pizzadillo for pizza. Highly recommended!

      Tips for Visiting Gran Canaria

The main thing I wish I knew before visiting: it’s not summer all year around. You will experience rain and cold weather at times, especially in the winter and in the north. If you plan to stay in the south, like Maspalomas, the weather is more stable and warm all year around – but it’s also the most touristic part with lots of resorts overlooking the beach.

Personally, I like the north more. It’s more wild and authentic. If you plan to visit the whole island, and the interior as well, you want to be ready for every situation. Bring hiking shoes to trek in the mountains and swimming shorts to swim in the sea. Most of the time when it’s cold and rainy in the north of the island, if you drive one hour south it will be sunny and warm.

Another thing I want to talk about is transport. Public transport works well. They are on time and you can take it everywhere. Yet, some journeys take a lot of time to reach locations and you will have to change two or three buses. I think the best option is to rent a car. This option is quite cheap and will save you heaps of time. The cheapest ones are Goldcar, Dollar and Thrifty but there are many options when you arrive at the airport.

12 Things To Do In Gran Canaria –

Whether it’s a family getaway with the little ones, a couple’s retreat or a night out on the tiles, Gran Canaria has something for everyone. Based just off North West Africa, you can be assured of hot weather and gorgeous beaches. Often the resort for a one or two week holiday, it can be easy to be trapped into the ‘sit on a beach all day’ attitude, therefore it is best to draw up a list of everything you want to try while in Gran Canaria. I would therefore take a look through my list of things to do in Gran Canaria and use it as a base.

      1) Scuba Diving

Well, no surprises here. The turquoise sea is home to a huge range of underwater creatures, making it a top spot for scuba divers. Yes, there may be sharks, so if you’re a bit on the nervy side you might want to speak to a guide to find the right area for you. Alternatively you could try snorkelling, but then you may miss out on spotting a sea turtle, one of my ultimate things to do before you die.

      2) Maspalomas Aquapark

Whether you’re on a holiday with kids or you never truly grew up yourself, waterparks are always amazing fun! I never went to one as a child, being based in the cold UK, however when I was in Texas I visited my first and I felt instantly addicted. Maspalomas is open all year round, meaning you don’t have to worry about visiting off-season. There are also some bigger rides for the older members, including Mamut, which you can raft in a group.

Plus, if water parks aren’t your thing, but you find yourself stuck there with the children, you can give the mini golf a try, which is on resort.

      3) Caldera De Bandama

Also known in English as the Cauldron of Bandama, this natural wonder is on most travel guides for Gran Canaria. A volcanic crater itself, it is around 1,000 metres wide and 200 metres deep. It also offers a nice alternative for those who like to go out and explore a little and see the more wild and natural side of a destination. Remember to wear hiking boots, as some parts can be a little bit slippery, meaning people have complained in the past when wearing their flip flops.

      4) Maspalomas Dunes

I’ve already mentioned the aquapark in Maspalomas, well now I want to highlight the complete opposite, the wide-spread dunes that stretch across the landscape. If you’ve never been to a desert before, it is quite a cool experience. I’m waiting for the moment they introduce sandboarding, that would be amazing. I have to be honest, I was given this tip when speaking to a Gran Canaria expert at DealChecker and it was a top tip.

      5) Roque Nublo

Standing a hefty 80 metres tall, Roque Nublo is Gran Canaria’s biggest icon and normally the centre piece of any travel guide for the area. If you’re brave and get some ropes, you can even climb to the top of it, but I stuck to standing below looking up. If it’s a cloudy day, you might want to avoid, as it has a reputation for disappearing behind the clouds, meaning you might not get that photo you are after.

      6) Ride A Camel

I mentioned visiting the dunes, but if you get the chance and you’ve never done it before, camel riding is quite a cool experience. Costing around £30 for an adult and £16 for a child (at last time I checked), it isn’t the cheapest option, but is something you have to tick off in your life. Alternatively, you can also horse ride across the dunes if this suits you better.

      7) Do Some Stargazing

Whether you book a stargazing guide through your hotel or just go to a clear area and look up at the sky above, Gran Canaria has a huge reputation for star gazing, thanks to the lack of air pollution and the location on the equator. Also, you will get to see constellations they will normally point out for both Northern and Southern hemisphere. I’d definitely recommend taking a look at the astronomy observatory.

      8) Buggy Tour

Forget walking around, it’s all about the buggy tours! Lasting approximately 2 hours, this trip is on a 2 seater buggy, while up to 8 buggies are available. For most hotels, they will also be able to pick you up directly from your hotel, which is a nice addition. One quick note, you will need a valid driving license if you want to drive yourself.

      9) Catamaran Trip

Sailing right along the coast of Gran Canaria, these trips normally cost around £40pp. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to offer a discount for children (or at least last time I checked). The 14 metre long boat can hold up to 35 people, however you normally hope for a few less so not to be so crowded. The trip will normally last around five hours, so I’d use this for a full day activity. The boat normally docks at a couple of locations, where you can try some other water based activities, such as banana boat rides and jet skiing. Before you ask, as it was the same question I had, it should include one meal (albeit not huge) and some refreshments, but I’d pack some extra bits for when you get peckish, it certainly isn’t enough to fill me up.

      10) Surfing

You have to start somewhere, why not make this the holiday where you finally learn to surf the waves? I can’t talk, I’m absolutely useless at surfing, but you have to give it a try anyway! The waves can get pretty big, while there are plenty of surf schools where you can learn to be like a pro.

      11) Dancing At Pueblo Canario

This beautiful plaza is a great location to eat your lunch, ponder about your holiday and generally relax. But probably the most appealing factor for visiting is they run a Gran Canarian folk dance every Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. Best of all, it’s completely free to watch.

      12) Jardin Canario

There is something truly special about seeing a botanical garden. Known as the Green Jewel of the island, Jardin Canario is Spain’s biggest botanical garden, with over 600 unique plants. If you do decide to visit, you can hire out some bikes and cycle over there. There is also a lake filled with fish which is pretty cool to see. As a stereotypical boy, I find the cactus garden the best bit!

Transatlantic, starting from Gran Canaria. November 21-22 – Marine practices

November 21st. Gran Canaria. Start of the transatlantic rally: Canary Islands – Santa Lucia Island.

1300, launched as part of a flotilla of 250 yachts from the island of Gran Canaria.

Start log count 7350 miles. The weather is sunny and matches the mood of the team. Tailwind with gusts up to 12 knots.

On board the “Juliet”: Yuri Myagkov – sailor, Konstantin Korotkov – sailor, Sergei Chistyakov – sailor, Mikhail Kosarev – sailor, Sergei Kishchenko – first assistant, Evgeny Shkaruba – captain. nine0005

1445, log 7359, coordinates 27*58.3N 015*19.3W. A flotilla of yachts stretch along the coast of Gran Canaria. We went out to clean water. The breeze blew, we go at a speed of 7-9 knots. We carry a gennaker.

So far, everything is unusual at sea. I made a list of shifts, we are preparing dinner. We are waiting for some events – the beginning of the journey. Passed the airport.

1710, log 7377. We are moving down along Africa. There is little wind and small yachts keep up with the big ones. All the time there is a struggle on passing courses. First Misha, now Sergey Kishchenko try their hand at small but nimble yachts, which every now and then strive to sit down on us. The flotilla is moving in unison, no one is trying to go further north, although there is such a variant of laying. There will be a cyclone and a fairly strong wind, though oncoming, there is something to think about. nine0005

1924, log 7397. Wind increased to 16 knots. Juliet briskly goes with a good baggay, up to 10 knots on a wave. In general, there are not many waves, we go quite comfortably. If the “old men” Misha and Sergey Kishchenko hadn’t tried so hard to cut into the wind, they would have gone where they needed to. In pursuit of speed, they are driven, the yacht heels, the gannaker puffs out its right cheek, we are rushing … to Africa. Although it is necessary, like, to America. Okay, maybe we can turn around.

The moon has risen… Almost round, shines on us, helps. nine0005

      November 22

0050, log 7442, coordinates 26*41.3N, 015*20.8W. Nice weather to start sailing. We are not going too fast, but the guys have time to tame. We slide on a light wave. There are small broachings and uncontrolled gybes, but they are only to the benefit, at least for those who are on the helm. The moon is also auspicious. Everything is flooded with silky light, shadows on the deck and sails. So far, only a few flying fish have been seen from the living creatures.

The team is quiet, there are no noisy debates or feasts, all this is still ahead. nine0005

0340, the gennaker halyard broke. The sail fell into the water. They caught it, brought in the second halyard, put the gennaker again. It all took about twenty minutes. There will be something to do tomorrow, we have to climb the mast … Serega Kishchenko and I looked at each other: everything is as always … Home again.

Halyards need to be cut every half a day, then the friction points change.

0750, the second halyard broke. In addition, he went under water and got caught on something by the sheet of the gennaker. Wind 18-19 knots. They put a double genoa. Kostya and Yura accomplished their morning feats: they lifted Kostya to the mast. There he depicted a rodeo on the top. The wave is decent, the height of the mast is 27 meters.
