Playa De Las Americas weather October

What’s the weather like in Playa de Las Americas in October?

If you fancy a luxury escape to the Canary Islands, away from the busy summer crowds, then why not visit beautiful Tenerife in October? The Playa de Las Americas weather in October is extremely pleasant, with warm temperatures about the same as they are in June, July and August. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

    Geographical influences

Hot air that occasionally blows across from Africa’s Sahara desert to Tenerife is cooled by the Atlantic Ocean. This can bring a welcome dip in temperatures during warm months like October. Playa de Las Americas is on Tenerife’s south coast. Towns in this part of the island are slightly warmer and drier than resorts in the north. This is because the huge volcano in the centre of Tenerife, Mount Teide, protects the area from some of the wind and rain that can reach the island from a northerly direction.

    Averages

You’ll love the weather in Playa de Las Americas in October.  The average high temperature is a brilliant 26°C, with a cool refreshing breeze from the Atlantic. The usual daytime average is 19°C. Bring your swimwear with you too. The water temperature will be around 23°C, which is great for splashing in the clear seas and even trying some fun water sports. You’ll see plenty of sunshine during your stay in October too, as this Tenerife hotspot soaks up an average of 11 hours of sun each day during the month. UV levels are moderate but it’s always best to wear sunblock if you’re lounging by the pool or beach. October is drier than months between November and March, with just 20mm of rainfall expected.

I should stress that this was no backpacking adventure, but a first foray into family package holidays for my gf and I, and our amazing 10 month old son. His time as a backpacker will…

When is the best time to go to Menorca?

Menorca offers consistent weather during the four seasons with the changes in seasonal weather clearly defining the different times of the year. Sun seekers will, of course, enjoy the hot summer in Menorca and benefit from the long days of sunlight and a comfortable level of heat.

However, the island sees nearly a million visitors over the summer months, so those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the sights and sounds of Menorca and its heritage might enjoy a late spring or early autumn break

Spring

Menorca’s Spring is warm with average daily temperatures of around 16°C in March, steadily rising to 22°C by the time May arrives. The spring in Menorca is relatively dry, although April’s rainfall is typically higher than other times during this season. Sunshine is among one of the popular reasons why tourists visit this island and the spring offers a gradual introduction into the summer with between 7 and 9 hours a day of sunlight.

Summer

Summer in Menorca begins with the popular Sant Joan festival in June, which attracts visitors from across Spain. The weather in June is hot, although temperatures peak at an average of nearly 30°C in August. Most visitors to the island would be unlucky to be caught in the rain with the summer months typically being the driest, as well as the hottest, of the year. Sunshine peaks in July with 11 hours per day, on average; the entire summer season offers long days and relatively low humidity.

Autumn

The distinction between summer and autumn is clearly seen in the rainfall in Menorca with typical rainfall increasing more than threefold from an average of 18mm in August to 70mm in September. The rain continues to define the autumn months with 104mm of showers by November. The days rapidly become shorter across the autumn period, although temperatures on the island fall less rapidly (26°C in September, cooling to 18°C by November) as the cooler weather draws in between September and November.

Winter

The winter on the island of Menorca offers a generally consistent, mild climate for those visiting the island between December and February. Average daily temperatures hover around 14°C and 15°C across the period and, similarly, rainfall ranges from a seasonal high of 54mm in December to a low of 45mm in January. Sunlight hours on the island are largely consistent, also; visitors can expect around 5 hours of sunlight each day. Menorca occasionally experiences some snowfall during the winter months

Menorca tourist information

As well as being a perpetually popular tourist destination, Menorca is also famed for its dairy farming and cheese making while other significant industries include leather making, shoe making, and distilling gin.

Menorca covers an area of 702 square kilometres and has over 200 kilometres of coastline. The distance between the two furthest points – the towns of Mao and Ciutadella – is 47 kilometres, making Menorca the second largest Balearic Island.

Festivals in Menorca run all the way through the year. Horses play a major part in them, particularly in the Sant Joan which is held in June – this colourful event attracts people from all over Spain. Another significant event is Día de la Hispanidad which occurs on 12th October. The day is a national holiday to mark Christopher Columbus discovering the New World in 1492 and sees soldiers taking part in a military parade.

If you are visiting Menorca as a family then spending a day at the zoo is a must. You have the chance to get up close to animals like tree-dwelling monkeys, kangaroos and emus. Many of the animals are free to roam around the park. Take a trip to the Cathedral and admire the architecture or learn all about Menorca’s history at the Museum of Menorca.

Average maximum temperatures remain above 22 °C from May through to October peaking in August with an average daily maximum temperature of 30 °C.

Why Cyprus is the perfect October half-term destination

We think Cyprus is a fabulous place to take a holiday at any time of the year, and that certainly applies in October – and this is why:

1. It’s not far and it’s easy to get to

There are direct flights from all over the UK to Cyprus, which has 3 international airports. The flight time from the UK is only around 4.5 hours; short enough to make the most of your week away.

2. The warmth

The weather is lovely in October – average highs of 26° – and the sea will still be warm enough to swim in. The evenings usually start to get cooler towards the end of October; you’ll still be able to sit outside to eat but take a cardigan.

3. The cost of accommodation is low

Family apartments and villas with shared pools can be booked for under £300 per week, for the week 22-29 October 2022.

4. The food is suitable for both adventurous and fussy-eaters

Whether you want to experience delicious Cypriot foods – similar to, but distinct from Greek and Turkish food – or you need more familiar cuisine, then Cyprus is ideal. You’ll find plenty of choice available between traditional, British or international cuisine.

5. There’s plenty to keep the children entertained

Beautiful, safe beaches; camel safaris; glass-bottomed boat cruises; the immense, Grecian-themed Ayia Napa water park; Paphos Zoo; snorkelling and scuba diving and much more.

We recommend the following destinations in Cyprus for families:

Fantastic, safe beaches with shallow, clear water and golden sand, where you can indulge in water sports and boat trips if you have the energy. Plenty of family-orientated restaurants and bars, and if you are going with older children they can easily catch a bus from here into Ayia Napa.

Fig tree bay

A picturesque port with fishing boats dotting the harbour, Paphos is a traditional holiday town with all the expected tourist amenities. It’s close to the mountains and various archaeological sites such as the Tomb of the Kings and the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite. A major benefit of this resort is that it is only 10 miles from Paphos Airport.

Aphrodite’s rock

Although it may have a reputation for a wild nightlife scene, this is limited to a small area and can easily be avoided, if you wish. In fact, going here will guarantee you fabulous beaches, the brilliant water park, and the incredible historic monastery. In addition, the teenagers in your group will not be bored in the evening!

Sea caves, Aiya Napa

A town within the Paphos district, this area offers you Coral Bay, a popular beach with shallow waters and seaside town. The rocky slopes along the coast in this area mean you can find sea caves and private coves here too. Paphos Zoo is near here, and kids and grown-ups will also enjoying seeing the Edro III Shipwreck.

Ship graveyard

A charming and characterful harbour town with a castle, ancient walls and plenty of sites of archaeological and historic interest. Mountain walks, wild donkeys, and relatively quiet beaches, this destination is perfect for any history or nature loving family.

    Cyprus weather October

What’s the weather like in Cyprus in October?

Cyprus’ location close to southwest Asia means that it’s one of the hottest destinations in the Mediterranean. Just off the south coast of Turkey and north of Egypt, you’ll get high temperatures and not much rain if you go there in October.

    Climatic influences

The Mediterranean Sea will stop you getting too hot in Cyprus due to its cooling waters and breezes. The weather’s similar in the north and south, although the east’s a bit warmer and drier because of westerly winds. This is due to the island’s two mountain ranges, with Mount Olympus the Troodos Mountains’ highest point at almost 2,000m.

    Averages

If you’re staying in popular Paphos on your holidays to Cyprus you’ll get an average high temperature of 27ºC in October, so you’ll want to bring your summery clothes even though it’s now autumn. Things stay quite comfortable in the evenings but you’ll probably want to bring a warmer top, with temperatures cooling to 16ºC at night on average. The sea’s inviting with a temperature of around 24ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from around 50% to 80%. Rainfall’s just 18mm across three rainy days.

    Daylight

During October you can expect 11 hours of daylight with eight hours of sunshine each day. UV levels will be moderate, so you’ll still need to bring plenty of sun cream and be careful in the midday sun. Sunrise is around 7am in October, while sunset’s at 6.30pm at the start of the month, and gradually gets earlier until the end of daylight saving takes another hour off this.

Or maybe you didn’t think about the sea, but now you have a free week in October, and you can go to Cyprus – there will be no problems with tickets and good accommodation. Holidays in Cyprus in October: pros and cons

What are the similar reviews about holidays in Cyprus in October? The number of delights. Even if negative moments slip through, they are lost against the backdrop of praise.

Tourists are very satisfied with this:

    • it is warm in the resorts, but not hot – you can’t think of better weather for a holiday with kids;
    • the sun is very soft – you can sunbathe for a long time on the beach;
    • the water temperature is the same as in summer – the children will not want to leave the sea;
    • there are few people in the resorts – the whole beach will be at your disposal;
    • favorable conditions for windsurfing are developing – you can finally try what it is;
    • markets abound with fruits – Cypriot mango is not inferior to Egyptian mango;
    • vacation prices are falling – in Cyprus in October you can relax very budget;
    • Demand for tickets and hotels is declining – a good chance for those who are planning a trip at the last moment.

What is noted as minuses? First, short daylight hours. Because of it, water parks are closed earlier and there is almost no time for a beach holiday in the afternoon. Secondly, waves. More often it storms in Paphos and neighboring resorts, less often in the south and east of the island.

Thirdly, possible cooling and rains at the end of the month. You should not be afraid of serious bad weather, but it is still better to plan a program for a cool and rainy day. Here it is necessary to clarify what temperature in Cyprus is considered a cold snap. Read about the weather of the island to decide where to relax in Cyprus in October.

    Weather in Cyprus in October

To notice the change of seasons in Cyprus, you need to watch the weather in October-November. October is warm and sunny, in November there are more cloudy and rainy days, although the sun still spoils the attention of the small island.

The weather in early October will make happy those who like to relax by the sea. There is no unbearable heat, the beach is very comfortable, and the water is almost as warm as in August. Rain is rare at this time.

The weather in Cyprus changes a little at the end of October. The evenings are already quite cool, the sky frowns at times, the probability of rain increases. It is still warm during the day, and the sea does not have time to cool down. For a trip to Cyprus in October with a child, you will need mostly light clothing. For evening walks and trips to the mountains, a windbreaker, a light sweater and trousers will be enough.

    Air and water temperature

The Mediterranean climate of Cyprus is half a year of summer heat. In October, it is even more comfortable here than in July-August, because the air temperature does not go off scale. Here’s what thermometers show at the most popular resorts:

    Resort Daily Night t water
    Ayia Napa +26.9°С +23. 4°С +25.8°С
    Larnaca +27.4°С +22.3°С +25.6°C
    Limassol +26.6С +20.5°С +25.4°C
    Paphos +25.8°С +21.4°C +25.2°С

Daytime air temperature in Cyprus in October remains within the range of +24-28°C, sometimes it is a little hotter or cooler. The night temperature is only a few degrees lower, in some resorts it can get cold at night up to +15-18°C.

The water temperature in Cyprus in October depends on the resort, but nowhere is it below +24°C. The sea cools down to such indicators only at the end of the month, and for almost the whole of October it maintains a temperature of + 25-27 ° С.

    Is it possible to swim

If anything prevents swimming in Cyprus in October, it is definitely not the water temperature. The sea is so warm that its temperature is often higher than the air temperature. Waves can become a hindrance in the middle of autumn. It often storms in Paphos, and in Limassol, on the contrary, the sea is usually calm. I am glad that on many beaches where they swim in October, the rescue service is still working.

    Beach holiday

The beaches at different resorts in Cyprus look different, but they are united by well-groomed and convenient infrastructure. That is why a “blue flag” flies over many of them.

In October, the holiday season is still going on, so there are sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach, cafes are open, and a rescue service is on duty. Entrance to all beaches is free, you only need to pay if you want to take a sunbed.

In addition to municipal beaches, there are hotel beaches on the island. The use of their infrastructure is free for guests. Where to go in Cyprus in October – to the golden beaches of Ayia Napa or to the windswept peninsula of Akrotiri? There are plenty to choose from.

    Ayia Napa

The resort in the southeast of the island seems to be unaware of the arrival of autumn. In early October, thermometers show +24-28°С during the day and +22-25°С at night, at the end it gets colder by only a couple of degrees. Rains are possible a couple of times, wind speed is 3.5 m/s. The water temperature is kept within + 25-27 ° С.

The sandy beaches of Ayia Napa stretch for several kilometers. The entrance to the water is gentle everywhere, strong waves are rare, so children can swim without fear. One of the most beautiful and comfortable beaches for families with children is Vatia Gonia. In addition to it, there are many spacious, well-equipped places for recreation in the resort and next to it.

Plus Ayia Napa – a variety of entertainment. You can spend time in the water park or in the amusement parks. You can safely walk around the botanical garden or cactus park. You can go hiking in Cape Greco or take a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon. You can go to the Museum of the Sea or go to the Protaras Aquarium.

Many resort hotels are suitable for families with children, as they have children’s pools, playgrounds, mini-clubs. There are hotels that work on the concept of “all inclusive” or “full board” and offer a children’s menu.

    Larnaca

The calm resort of southern Cyprus feels the arrival of autumn at the end of October, when the air cools down to +22-24°C. And before that, the air temperature is kept within + 25-30 ° C during the day and + 20-24 ° C at night. Rains and cloudy weather are more likely in the second half of the month, the average wind speed is 3 m/s. The water temperature gradually decreases from +27°С to +25°С.

The grayish sand on the beaches of Larnaca is not so photogenic, but this does not affect the quality of the rest. Finikoudes Beach is considered the most comfortable, along which a beautiful promenade stretches.

If you want to relax on the beach almost completely alone, you can go to one of the villages near Larnaca. For example, a cozy beach with a flat bottom and a shallow sea is located in the village of Oroklini.

Larnaca is a great place to visit with children of all ages. With the younger ones, you can go on a tour of the castle, the amusement park and the indoor play center. The elders will not refuse a trip to the archaeological museum, a trip to the village of Lefkara or a tour of the Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia.

Resort hotels cannot be called child-friendly. Usually, their list of services includes a family room and a baby cot, only some hotels have children’s entertainment. All inclusive is rare. Many tourists stay in self-catering apartments and eat at restaurants.

    Limassol

The most southern resort of Cyprus and does not think to leave the summer mode. The air maintains a temperature of +25-30°C during the day and +17-24°C at night, the sea never gets colder than +25-26°C even in mid-October. Rains here are more frequent than in Ayia Napa and Larnaca, but usually shift to the last week of the month. The wind speed is 3 m/s.

The beaches of Limassol are covered with sand and small pebbles. Somewhere, like on Dassudi Beach, it is very good to relax with small children. Fans of outdoor activities like the Akrotiri peninsula more: a good wind blows here, and just in October there are optimal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The resort has a lot of children’s entertainment: Fasouri Watermania water park, Masterland city of professions, the zoo and the Cyprus Land theme park will definitely appeal to children.

The older your traveler, the more chances that he will want to visit the ancient cities of Amathus and Kourion, the medieval Limassol castle, museums of water, wine and olive oil. Also from Limassol you can go on a trip to the Troodos mountains and visit the traditional villages – Omodos, Pedoulas, Arsos.

There are many respectable family hotels in Limassol. Usually they are located away from the center, stand on the first line, have their own beach.

    Paphos

Those who decide to choose the resort of Paphos do not primarily think about a beach holiday. But in October the temperature stays at +24-28°C during the day and +20-24°C at night, gloomy and rainy days are very rare, the water keeps the temperature at +24-27°C – so why not relax by the sea?

The beaches of Paphos are rocky, it is convenient to sunbathe there, but not very good for swimming. With children, they usually go to the sandy beaches of Faros, Vrisoudia and others. There is a flat bottom, and if there are no waves, the kids will be able to swim.

By the number of attractions, Paphos bypasses all other resorts. All tourists are familiar with the archaeological park, Paphos Castle, Aphrodite’s route, early Christian complexes in the catacombs.

Children won’t get bored either, if you take them to the Aphrodite Water Park, the zoo or the Planet Adventure family entertainment center. Please note that there are reputable hotels in Paphos and in neighboring villages, for example, in Geroskipou. There are not so many family hotels in the resort, often travelers with children stay in apartments.

One thing you don’t have to worry about in Cyprus is that your holiday will be boring. There are many attractions on the island, so many travelers rent a car and hit the road for new experiences. And the sunny and warm weather of October only contributes to this.

To begin with, you can inspect what is closest to the place of rest. In Ayia Napa, these are the Cavo Greco Natural Park, the Cyherbia Botanical Garden and the Thalassa Museum of the Sea. In Larnaca – a medieval castle, an archaeological museum and a salt lake, where flamingos arrive at the end of October. In Limassol – old buildings, a museum of the history of Cyprus in the Limassol castle and a museum of folk art.

But Paphos is worth it to come here from other resorts. Its ancient city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can see antique floor mosaics, an odeon, an agora, an asclepion, and fragments of city walls. The city has preserved early Christian catacomb complexes, Byzantine fortresses, and a medieval castle. With children it is interesting to visit the archaeological and ethnographic museum.

If the ancient ruins do not make you bored, we recommend visiting other ancient cities of Cyprus – Amathus, Kourion, Salamis. For example, one of the attractions of Kourion is a stadium for 7 thousand spectators. An even more ancient settlement of Khirokitia is located near Larnaca. Cylindrical buildings of the Neolithic period are also taken under the protection of UNESCO.

Neolithic and antiquity seem too dusty history? Visit the mountainous Cypriot villages – Lefkara, Omodos, Kakopetria, Geroskipou. Traditional Cypriot houses stand along the steep streets, and shops sell products with “lefkaritika” embroidery, the finest work of silver jewelry, jam, honey, Turkish delight.

    Entertainment for children

What should children be told to make them look forward to a trip to Cyprus? That in October all water parks work here. The largest, Waterworld, is located in Ayia Napa. The theme of the scenery is the history of Ancient Hellas, and a Trojan horse rises in the children’s pool.

There are good water parks in Limassol and Paphos, another small water entertainment center is located in Protaras. If children like to have fun in water parks for a long time, come there early in the morning, as opening hours are reduced in autumn. This is due to the short daylight hours.

Amusement parks, on the contrary, only open in the evening. There are two parks in Ayia Napa – Parko Paliatso and Dolfins Luna Park, in Larnaca there is one – Lucky Star Park. And in Limassol, instead of standard attractions, they offer archery, treasure hunting and cheering for the participants in the jousting tournament. Such a program is available at the Cyprus Land theme park.

If you need to keep a preschooler busy for an hour or two, you can take them to a play center such as WOW Action Park in Larnaca or Bubble Park in Limassol. And in the children’s city of professions Masterland (Limassol), the kids will want to stay longer.

A visit to the zoos of Paphos and Limassol, the oceanariums of Protaras and Paphos will give you a pleasant and relaxing holiday. A closer acquaintance with animals can be brought to the donkey and camel farms located between Limassol and Larnaca.

    Holidays, events and festivals

There are two important holidays in October in Cyprus. October 1 is celebrated Cyprus Independence Day . The island waged a liberation war for a long time, and only at 1960 year achieved sovereignty. In honor of this, a parade is held in Nicosia every year, and entertainment events are organized in other cities.

In Cyprus, there are many supporters of the reunification of the island with Greece, and therefore on October 28 they celebrate the National Day of Greece , or the day of “Ohi”. On this day in 1940, Greece turned down an offer to become an ally of Fascist Italy in World War II. Today it is an occasion for another magnificent parade, celebrations and entertainment.

A less formal celebration is the Ayia Napa Medieval Festival which takes place in mid-October. Knights and princesses march through the streets of the city, jugglers and acrobats surprise with clever tricks, dancers and musicians amuse the audience. All this action takes place in the evening, and during the day you can visit the medieval market and attend master classes in various crafts.

    Vacation prices

The holiday season is over and prices in Cyprus are going down in October. You can save a lot of money if you postpone your vacation until mid-autumn.

    Flight tickets

After the tickets to Cyprus become a bit cheaper in September, in October the price for them rises again by 5-15%. Since November, flight prices have been reduced by one and a half to two times. Flights to Paphos are usually more expensive than to Larnaca. In October, the price for them grows more significantly.

    Hotels

In October, housing prices gradually fall. Depending on the resort, a hotel room or apartment is cheaper by 10-20% compared to September. In November, the price drops by the same amount.

    Tours

The price of tour packages for 11-14 nights in October may drop by 15-18% compared to September. The cost of short tours almost does not change and can even increase by 2-3%. Package holidays in November cost the same as a month earlier, although the price of short tours may increase.

    Power

The concept of “all inclusive” is not popular in Cyprus, travelers prefer to actively get acquainted with the local cuisine or cook on their own.

The cost of meals in restaurants and cafes depends on whether the catering establishment is located by the sea, in a tourist area, or far from tourist places. A hearty lunch or dinner at a restaurant where locals go will cost 8-10 euros. To dine in a restaurant by the sea, you have to pay twice as much.

The price of products in Cyprus is somewhat higher than in other EU countries, but you don’t have to worry about the assortment and quality. It is better to buy fruits and vegetables in markets or fruit shops.

The price of 1 kg of pears in October starts from 1.5-2 euros, apples, plums, pineapples, mangoes and papaya – from 2-3 euros, grapes – from 3-4 euros, prickly pear fruits – from 5 euros, pitaya – from 6 euros. Cypriot citrus fruits, watermelons and melons cost less than 1 euro per kilo. The price of vegetables is kept within 0.5-3 euros per 1 kg.

    Shopping

If in the reviews about holidays in Cyprus in October they write about pleasant purchases, then most often they mention fresh fruits, homemade jam, honey and traditional sweets. From fruit it is worth paying attention to mango. Cypriot mangoes are unpretentious in appearance, but sweet and juicy.

Honey is often bought after excursions to mountain villages. In supermarkets, you can safely buy honey from the Trodos factory. Unusual varieties of honey – lavender, eucalyptus, thyme. Glyko tou kutalyu jam is sold in shops and tourist shops. You can choose a jar of dessert made from figs, orange peels and even young walnuts.

Almonds, pistachios and hazelnuts are grown in Cyprus. By mid-autumn, the harvest of nuts has long been harvested, and you can try fresh pastelaki walnut bars or sausages made from boiled fruit juice and sujukos nuts.

    Tips for traveling with children

The benefits of resting in Cyprus in October with children will be calculated by all parents: mild warmth and sea climate contribute to recovery, peace in the resorts also has a beneficial effect on well-being. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your trip.

    1. The first half of October is more suitable for a beach holiday. In fact, you can sunbathe and swim all month, but closer to November, the weather can be capricious.
    2. On the beach, it is advisable to use sunscreen, but maximum protection is not needed in October.
    3. Regardless of the weather forecast, take light jackets, sweaters, jeans. The smallest may need a thin hat.
    4. If you are looking for a hotel with animation, check if the animators will work in October.

What’s the weather like in Lanzarote in October?

With a location off the western shores of North Africa, Lanzarote’s the furthest east of the Canary Islands. This means it enjoys warm weather and hardly any rain in October, and you’ll love holidays to Lanzarote at this time if you prefer thinner crowds.

    Climatic influences

The island gets warm weather all year round because it’s close to the Sahara Desert. You might feel like you’re in the desert when there are hot winds and the occasional dust storm, but north easterly winds and the cooling Canary Current stop things from being too extreme in October. The Canary Current’s a stream of water that comes from the Atlantic, and makes for great diving as well as keeping you comfortable.

    Averages

The average high temperature in Lanzarote during October is 27ºC, so you can look forward to chilling out in your beach gear during the day. Things stay pleasant in the evening, with night temperatures only falling to around 18ºC, so you won’t want to take up too much space in your suitcase with warm clothes. The average sea temperature’s 22ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from the late-50s to 90%. You can expect just 10mm of rainfall across two rainy days.

    Daylight

During October you can expect 11 hours of daylight with seven hours of sunshine each day. Bring plenty of sun cream as UV levels will be high and the midday sun’s very hot. Sunset’s after 7.30pm at the start of the month, and gradually gets earlier until the end of daylight saving takes another hour off this.

What’s The Weather Like In October In Lanzarote?

    Mike

    WEATHER

Here’s our summary of the actual weather in October here in Lanzarote. We’ve based these observations on recording the actual weather since 2008.

    Sunshine

October is officially autumn, and we can get mixed weather during the month, but that can mean blazing hot days, as well as the odd cloudy or cooler day. Typically temperatures are in the range 28 to 34, although in 2017 we had several days in the high 30’s.

The nights start to get cooler in October, and you may see temperatures dropping to 15 to 18 degrees.

At the start of the month, the sun rises at about 7:40AM and sets at about 7:10PM, but everything shifts by an hour with the clock change towards the end of the month, so the mornings are lighter, but it gets dark soon after 6PM in the evenings.

We can get rain in October, but typically only on 2 or 3 days. Skies are generally a lovely blue, but there will often be wispy high cloud around, particularly in the mornings. October is generally the month where we see the first rain on the island since March.

The ocean is still warm – at least 23 degrees.

    Wind

October is not typically a windy month, although we can occasionally get the tail end of a storm from The Atlantic, in which case we might have a few windy days.

Expect the wind to be in the range 0-10KMH usually. Costa Teguise tends to keep the wind a little longer in the month, if you are a windsurfer, and that’s because it “sticks out” from the island and is not sheltered by hills.

    History

October 2021 was hot. For the first three weeks of the month, the daytime temperature didn’t drop below 30 degrees. We had blue skies, light winds and it was pretty much perfect for the beach. The final week of October started with some morning cloud, and the temps dropped to mid to high 20’s, but the cloud soon burned away each day.

October 2020 was epic – the whole month was warm, dry and sunny, although we did have stronger winds than are normal for the month. The island had been in a state of drought with no real rain for more than a year, so we were hopeful when the forecast predicted a rain storm in the middle of the month, but sadly it never materialised.

October 2019 was initially typical of the month – three weeks of lovely sunshine and blue skies. But it all went wrong in week 4, when we had some fairly persistent rain for a full day – very unusual for this time of year, but the good news is that the drought was broken. After the rain, we then had a couple of overcast days, before the temperature started climbing and in the final four days of the month it was very hot, with temperatures in the 30’s and no cloud.

October 2018 was amazing for the first three weeks – hot days and lots of lovely sunshine. At one stage we thought we were going to catch Hurricane Leslie, but it veered north. We did get some heavy rain at the start of week three, though and the rest of the month was then a weird mixture of one cloudy day and one sunny day.

2017 was spectacular and the hottest since records began, with day after day of hot, sunny weather, no cloud and very little wind.

2016 was similar, although a little cooler. We didn’t have rain in either year.

In 2015 we had some heavy rain in week three, which lasted 2 days, and then cleared to hot sunny weather. 2014 has a few showers, but was otherwise typical.

In 2013, we had thunderstorms (very rare in Lanzarote) and some very heavy rain towards the end of the month, which caused flooding in Arrecife and Costa Teguise.

2010 through to 2012 very very typical, each with a couple of days rain, and then excellent sunny weather for the rest of the month.

    What you should wear

Beach wear and the usual shorts and t shirts during the day. You’ll want a light cardigan for the evenings, something warmer than flip flops on your feet, and perhaps a waterproof jacket if you plan to go out walking on the island, in case you are caught in a shower, which can be heavy.

For divers, a thin wet suit is still perfectly fine, and for triathletes, the water is just getting cool enough to be able to train in a wetsuit.

Advice on the best time to visit a particular destination is based on average local weather statistics, when the weather conditions are generally better than at other times of the year. Weather Forecast for Tenerife 13 to 19 October
Everyone will be talking about the storm that hit Tenerife yesterday and quite rightly so, it was one that brought devastating rainfall to a lot of places. Prior to Sunday it was mostly a warm and sunny week after a grey start. Northern parts probably enjoyed more sunshine over the week and on Friday we were staring at intense blue skies in Garachico whilst there were reports of cloud and even some light rain in other parts. The ferocity of the rain took a lot of people by surprise.  After a long dry summer all across the island leaves the ground hard, the first heavy rains after summer are always potentially dangerous as the ground can’t absorb water fast enough and the steepness of the island sends raging rivers coursing toward the coast. From images online Santa Cruz in the east, La Laguna at 600m and places like Playa San Juan/Alcala in the south west saw the worst of the rain as torrents from the hills devastated some areas. Here, just above the north coast, we escaped with what seemed like no more than your average rainy Sunday in Manchester.

The storm also left the first snows of the season on Mount Teide, a very early appearance this year.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 20 to 26 October
The gloomy weather lingers about for a couple of days more and Tuesday especially looks like it will rain. With snow, wind and rain on el Teide the National Park doesn’t look the most inviting place to visit before Wednesday anyway. From then on it’s sunshine everywhere. In fact don’t be surprised to see a weather alert for a heatwave midweek. By the weekend it should be almost perfect weather – sunshine and with temperatures in the mid to upper 20s.

Weather in South Tenerife –  It’s going to be a gloomy start to the week in the south of Tenerife with mostly cloud today and tomorrow, although the sun will shine at some points on Tuesday. After that it’s mostly sunshine for the rest of the week. The chances are it will rain on Monday (possibly) and Tuesday (definitely) but after that it should be dry with only the outside chance of a shower. Temperatures will start around 25C shooting up into the 30s midweek and then settling at a very hot 28C for the second half of the week.

Weather in North Tenerife – It should be mainly a sunny week in the north with some decent cloud about on Tuesday when it will probably rain at some point, more than likely early morning. Temperatures will start the week at around a lowish 21C before rising to 29C midweek and then levelling out at 26C for the weekend.

Weather in East Tenerife –  The weather forecast mirrors that of the north except there might be more cloud about on Sunday.

Weather in South West Tenerife – Much the same outlook as the south a grey start to the week, but sunshine from Wednesday onwards. Temperatures also reflect those of the south.

Weather in the Mount Teide Crater – The weather in Teide National Park reflects conditions elsewhere with cloud and even some rain on Monday and Tuesday when there will also still be very strong winds. Temperatures in the crater will range from 10 to 20C and 1 to 4C on the summit. There will also be quite strong winds over the weekend so unlikely that the cable car will be running at either the start or end of this week.

Pic: Despite the stormy end to the week, much of last week was perfect weather.

Palma, Spain – October Weather

What’s the weather like in Palma in October?

Rainfall

October is by far the wettest month of the year in Palma, the capital and largest city of Majorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. A total of 70mm of rain falls in the course of the month, but you can still expect several dry days. There are 11 days with precipitation, which also means that there are 19 days without any rainfall at all. The chance that rainfall occurs increases slightly in the course of October, from 33% in the beginning of the month to 38% at the end. There are two main types of precipitation: thunderstorms and moderate rain. They are observed on 34% and 36% of the days with rainfall respectively. Other types of rainfall that may happen are drizzle and light rain, occurring on 13% and 12% of the rainy days.

Temperature

Temperatures are cooling down in the Mediterranean at this time of year and Palma is no exception. The average temperature for the month is 19°C, but you may find that it drops down to a cool 13°C at night, so don’t forget to pack a jacket. In the afternoon, the mercury rises to an average high of 24°C, which is much more comfortable than the high temperatures in the UK this time of year. Those temperatures decrease in the course of the month. October 1 is the warmest day of the month with a daytime high of 25°C and a nighttime low of 15°C, while October 31 is the coolest day of the month with a high of 21°C and a low of 11°C. The sea temperature, however, still averages a temperature above 20°C and now ranges around 22°C, the same temperature that was recorded in June.

Cloud Cover

October’s wetter weather is related to the increasing cloud cover. In the course of the month, cloud cover increases from 37% to 42%, meaning that the sky is partly cloudy. There is, however, still sufficient sunshine, as the sky is clear or mostly clear 50% of the time in October.

Sunshine Hours

The length of the days decreases steadily throughout October. With 11.45 daylight hours, October 1 is the longest day of the month. October 31 is the shortest day with 10.32 hours of daylight. Every day in October is 2.4 minutes shorter than the previous one.

There are 8 hours of sunshine per day on average. This is a two-degree drop compared with September, but still two hours more than the annual minimum in December. With 8 sunshine hours out of 10 to 11 daylight hours, October may be the wettest month of the year, but it still is extremely sunny!

Hotels in Palma in October

Hostal Apuntadores

Stay at the Hostal Apuntadores in the heart of La Lonja and you will be right in the centre of the action. This hotel is surrounded by international bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The historic city centre lies only a few steps away, as do the shopping streets of Palma. The hostal also has a rooftop terrace offering great views over the resort.

Terramar

The Terramar is a budget hotel just 50 metres away from the Paseo Maritimo. It is close to the yacht club and Palma’s vibrant nightlife, which makes it a popular place to stay among independent young travellers. There is a guest kitchen, dining area, a shady terrace and an expansive sun terrace.

Beaches in Palma in October

Playa s’Arenal

Although it may rain, the sea water is still comfortable to swim in in October. If you’re looking for something else than the main beaches in Palma, consider heading 10 kilometres east, to Playa s’Arenal. This spectacular 210-metre-long beach connects to the 4,600-metres Playa de Palma. It stands out from the rest because of its palm trees that dot the beach, giving it a true tropical feel. The water is crystal-clear and the sand white, warm and soft. Many kinds of water sports can be done and there are numerous beach bars, restaurants and cafés along the promenade.

Bars and Restaurants

El Tunel

A good bar-restaurant to visit at the end of the day is El Tunel. It serves good regional Balearic cuisine at a reasonable price. The Portixol Hotel also has a great restaurant that is frequented by locals as well as tourists. The restaurant is opened from early morning to late at night and serves all kinds of meals; the bar serves international cocktails, coffee, beers and has comfy coaches and excellent views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to do in Palma in October

Fiesta Catalina Tomas

On the third Saturday in October, visitors to Palma can enjoy the Fiesta of Santa Catalina Tomas. This colourful event sees a parade of floats and bands wind their way through the streets of the city.

Cathedral of Mallorca

The Cathedral of Mallorca is well worth a visit. This impressive building towers over the city and is full with spectacular stained-glass windows. Although originally built in the 13th century, restoration work was carried out in the early 20th century. However, unlike some restoration work, these reforms have enhanced the beauty of the building.

Shopping

If you fancy doing a bit of shopping while you are in the city, you find a wide variety of stores to choose from. Hugo Boss is present on the Paseo del Borne, one of Palma’s most exclusive streets, or pop into Showroom Street and pick up some designer bargains.

Climate of Fuerteventura – weather in Fuerteventura

Climate of Fuerteventura – what weather to expect on the second largest of the Canary Islands

Only about a hundred kilometres (or 62 miles) separate the island of Fuerteventura, in the Spanish archipelago of the Canaries from the coast of Africa.

Car hire Fuerteventura Airport – compare prices

The proximity of the desert of Sahara is responsible for the warm weather experienced on the island across all seasons; the north east trade winds and the Canary current prevent the temperatures  in Tenerife from getting too high – a combination which results in mild and stable weather and a status of a year-round holiday destination.

The arid, lunar-like landscapes of the island’s interior are surrounded by over 150 beaches along the coast, which, together with the great climate, make Fuerteventura one of the best beach destinations within an easy reach from mainland Europe.

Fuerteventura – the island of sun
Much like the other Canary Islands, Fuerteventura registers over 300 sunny days per year. The sunniest month are June to August, with an average of 10 hours of sunshine. In the Canary ‘winter’, the weather is still generous and even in December and January the tourists are likely to enjoy up to 6 hours of sun per day.

See detailed Fuerteventura weather information.

Temperatures in Fuerteventura
As mentioned before, oppressive heat is not a problem in Tenerife, where the daytime temperatures vary between 17°C in the winter and 27°C at the peak of summer.

Thanks to the constant breeze from the sea, or from the Atlantic Ocean to be correct, even during the warmest months in Tenerife the temperatures are comfortable.

The same cannot be said, however, about the water temperature, which because of the cold Canary Current are always a bit more chilly than you might expect when looking at the air temperature.   With the max. water temperature of 22°C registered between August and October,  Fuerteventura cannot compare to destinations in, for example, Mediterranean.

Always windy in Fuerteventura
Despite the fairly cool waters, Fuerteventura is a popular destination amongst surfers, due to excellent offshore wind conditions. Dubbed as ‘The Hawaii’ of Europe, the island offers year-round conditions for surf on all levels.

The summer months are recommended for beginners as the waves are, in general, smaller. From October to May, the strong swell creates perfect conditions for advanced surfers looking to get barrelled.

On land, strong gusts of wind are rare, however moderate breeze is experienced on the islands throughout the year.

Occasionally, Fuerteventura is exposed to a hot and dry wind blowing from the Sahara, which brings a lot of dust/sand. Some travellers, especially the ones suffering from asthma, may find the dust cloud uncomfortable. Staying indoors, in air conditioned  spaces is recommended during the dust cloud periods.

Is there a rainy season of Fuerteventura?
With an average of only 105 mm of rainfall per year, Fuerteventura is one of the driest Canary Islands.

December and January are the ‘wettest’ months, although even during that time you should not expect more than 4 to 5 days of rain per month. Even then the rainfall is usually limited to short showers.

From June to August, rain is practically inexistent and in the remaining months, also very rare.

Review of the Week: 7-13 November 2022

Freakishly mild weather meant that many of last week’s birds continued into the review period, although a blast of easterly winds did deliver a scattering of late autumn Sibes in eastern areas – and northerly winds produced a smattering of misplaced Little Auks.

It turned out that the west coast of Ireland would deliver the week’s biggest prize, however, with a surprise Nearctic double-act of two Bufflehead at Carrowmore Lake, Co Mayo, earning top spot. Flighty and present for just one day only, the pair could hardly be better placed for a pair of genuine vagrants. Birders across both Ireland and Britain will be hoping that the pair resurface somewhere else this winter.

Shocked and more than a little pleased when I realised what the two tiny ducks flying at me across Carrowmore Lake in Co. Mayo were this afternoon! This brace of Buffleheads being so flighty was bad for my stress levels, but good for confirming the lack of colored leg-rings. pic.twitter.com/W3HPOzHtTU

A resident of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the presence of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel in the Atlantic Ocean in small numbers on a near-annual basis is perhaps the single greatest mystery in Western Palearctic birding. Co Cork added to the totals this week, when one flew close inshore past Ballycotton, Co Cork, on 11th. There are just two accepted records of the species in Ireland, one off Bridges of Ross, Co Clare, in 1985 and one trapped on Great Skellig, Co Kerry, in 2000.

The aforementioned mega-rare petrel aside, seabird action saw large numbers of Great Shearwaters continue to roam the South-West Approaches, with counts of several hundred off both Lizard Point, Cornwall, and Galley Head, Co Cork. A Cory’s Shearwater lingered off the Isle of May, Fife, on 10-11th. In Kent, a juvenile Sabine’s Gull at Port Lympe Safari Park continued to prove popular, with others logged off coastal sites in 10 counties. It was another bumper week for Leach’s Storm Petrels in southern and western areas, while 12 Grey Phalaropes were recorded and Long-tailed Skuas were off five counties.

An arrival of classic late autumn Siberian vagrants peaked with a brief Black-throated Thrush on North Ronaldsay, Orkney, for a few minutes on 9th. A quintessential November ‘rare’ is Hume’s Leaf Warbler. The most notable of three found this week was one in the company of a Yellow-browed Warbler at Swanpool, Cornwall. Others were at Blakeney Point, Norfolk, and Grutness, Mainland Shetland.

Black-throated Thrush, North Ronaldsay, Orkney (Dante Shepherd).

Ever popular was the young male Pied Wheatear at Whitley Bay, Northumberland, which – to the relief of skateboarders across North Tyneside – bid adieu to the site’s skate park after 12th. Belated news concerned a first-winter female photographed at Portland Bill, Dorset, on 29 October. An Isabelline Wheatear remained at Uwchmynydd, Gwynedd, throughout, with the Irish example lasting at Toe Head, Co Cork, until 8th at least.

Greater Manchester’s first Eurasian Penduline Tit was an excellent find at Pennington Flash on 9th. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t stay long, with only the finder lucky enough to connect with it. Equally brief was one mist-netted by the ringing team at Woolston Eyes, Cheshire, on 12th – a second county record after one in 1986. Though impossible to confirm as the same bird, it feels a distinct possibility – both sites are just 10 km apart. A second (or third) bird was on St Mary’s, Scilly.

The second Olive-backed Pipit for Skokholm, Pembrokeshire, rounded of an impressive autumn for the island late on 13th, with two more in Shetland. No fewer than six Richard’s Pipits were logged and Shore Larks were at six east coast sites between Lothian and Essex. At opposite ends of Britain, Red-throated Pipits were at Nanjizal Valley, Cornwall, and Loch of Norby, Mainland Shetland. On 10th, an American Buff-bellied Pipit overflew St Mary’s, Scilly, after a 10-day absence.

Four Great Grey Shrikes were in England – at Thursley Common, Surrey, Black Down, West Sussex, Berney Marshes RSPB, Norfolk, and Hothfield, Kent. Further afield, one skirted the Conwy-Clwyd border near Llyn Brenig, Wales, with another on Whalsay, Shetland. A late Red-flanked Bluetail was on St Mary’s, Scilly, from 9th and a probable Eastern Yellow Wagtail graced the seafront at East Cowes, Isle of Wight, from 27 October-8 November. Otherwise, four Wrynecks were along the south coast between Scilly and East Sussex and two Little Buntings were in Shetland.

Wryneck, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly (Kris Webb).

Hornemann’s Arctic Redpolls were again at both Lerwick, Mainland Shetland, and North Ronaldsay, Orkney. Common Rosefinches were split between Portland, Dorset, Kirkpatrick Durham, Dumfries & Galloway, and North Ronaldsay, Orkney, with European Serins at Lizard, Cornwall, and Portland, Dorset.

Pallas’s Warbler, South Foreland, Kent (Jamie Partridge).

Both Radde’s and Dusky Warblers were on St Mary’s, Scilly. Dusky Warblers were at four sites in total, with another Radde’s Warbler at Portland, Dorset. Six Pallas’s Warblers included two at South Foreland, Kent, with a Blyth’s Reed Warbler again at Lerwick, Mainland Shetland. Three presumed Siberian Lesser Whitethroats were logged – at Croydon, London, St Dennis, Cornwall, and Vatersay, Outer Hebrides.

Three of the week’s four reported Pallid Swifts hailed from the Scottish coast. Singles were in Highland and Aberdeenshire, while one at Portknockie, Moray & Nairn, throughout proved especially popular. In Hampshire, a probable flew over Old Basing, Hampshire. Perhaps even more surprising for mid-November was the continued occurrence of several Red-rumped Swallows along the east coast of England. Most impressive were three near Walberswick, Suffolk, accompanied by over 50 Swallows! Up to three were in Kent too, while one flew south flew Spurn, East Yorkshire.

Pallid Swift, Portknockie, Moray & Nairn (Peter Stronach).

Red-rumped Swallow, Walberswick, Suffolk (Andrew Moon).

An apparent near-adult Azores Gull at The Mere from 10-12th would make for a surprise Shropshire first. Elsewhere, a juvenile Kumlien’s Gull flew past Lizard Point, Cornwall, on 7th; Bonaparte’s Gulls were at Stag Rocks, Northumberland, and Kilshannig, Co Kerry. Long-stayers in Ireland comprised a Double-crested Cormorant at Doon Lough, Co Leitrim, and a Forster’s Tern at Kinvarra, Co Galway.

Azores Gull, The Mere, Shropshire (Stephen Tomlinson).

Elsewhere in Ireland, inland Co Kildare racked up another impressive Nearctic visitor with a Spotted Sandpiper at Leixlip Reservoir from 8th – following both a Greater Yellowlegs and another Spotted Sandpiper earlier in 2022. The Wilson’s Snipe racked up a round month on St Mary’s, Scilly, with other continuing shorebirds including a Long-billed Dowitcher at Salthouse, Norfolk, Lesser Yellowlegs at Loch of Strathbeg RSPB, Aberdeenshire, and a White-rumped Sandpiper on Benbecula, Outer Hebrides. Pectoral Sandpipers were in both Nottinghamshire and Dumfries & Galloway, while American Golden Plovers were split between North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Myroe Levels, Co Londonderry, and Annagh Marsh, Co Mayo.

Spotted Sandpiper, Leixlip, Kildare (Derek Brennan).

Deep in the Scottish Borders, a Pallid Harrier headed south over Newcastleton Forest near the Northumberland border on 9th. In Norfolk, one was again quartering the saltmarsh near Warham Greens, while Co Kerry was treated to a sub-adult male Montagu’s Harrier at Ballyheige from 11th. In Conwy, a small crake species was reported at Conwy RSPB on 8th.

Perhaps the most surprising find of the week saw a Marbled Duck on Holy Island, Northumberland, on 13th. Much like last week’s record of two Wood Duck in Cornwall, previous Marbled Duck occurrences have trodden a tricky path with the national rarities committees. It is also commonly kept in captivity, making distinguishing between wild and escape fraught with difficulty. With a White-headed Duck in Belgium, Pallid Swifts aplenty and a supporting cast of several Iberian vagrants across North-West Europe, however, who would we be to bet against this latest example?

Marbled Duck (bottom right), Holy Island, Northumberland (Graham Sorrie).

Up to three Ferruginous Duck were at Ormesby Broad, Norfolk, over the weekend, although the possibility of hybrids wasn’t eliminated. Another remained at Inch Island Lake, Co Donegal, with Ring-necked Duck reported from 18 sites. Another bumper winter showing appears on the cards for this dapper Nearctic visitor.

The American Black Duck was back at Termoncarragh Lough, Co Mayo, and eight Green-winged Teal included five new birds, while American Wigeon were in Somerset, Lincolnshire, Dumfries & Galloway and Shetland. Both the White-winged Scoter and King Eider lingered off Musselburgh, Lothian, with the Black Scoter still off Northumberland. White-billed Divers were off Brora, Highland, and North Ronaldsay, Orkney.

Green-winged Teal, Tain, Highland (Robert Swann).

American Wigeon (left), Meare Heath, Somerset & Bristol (Chris Teague).

Two Snow Geese – white-morph and blue-morph adults – were reported again from Aghernagallagh, Co Mayo, with seven Taiga Bean Geese over Kinghorn, Fife, in addition to the regular wintering flock at Slamannan, Forth. An impressive mini-flock of four Todd’s Canada Geese were on Tiree, Argyll, on 13th, with one still with Barnacle Geese at Mersehead RSPB, Dumfries & Galloway. Black Brant remained in East Yorkshire, Essex and Dorset.

Todd’s Canada Geese, Salum, Tiree, Argyll (Jim Dickson).

Western Palearctic

The Red-breasted Nuthatch at Tönsheider Wald, Germany, continued to prove a popular draw. Other continuing Nearctic megas concerned a Common Yellowthroat at Magadino, Switzerland, and a Sandhill Crane at Balmazújváros, Hungary.

Elsewhere in Germany, the Western Olivaceous Warbler remained on Heligoland until 8th, while a Bonaparte’s Gull and Lesser Scaup both lingered. A Eurasian Crag Martin overflew Mandø and the Hooded Merganser hung on at Randers. Poland’s third Stejneger’s Scoter was at Krynica Morska on 13th. In Norway, a Black-throated Thrush was at Karmøy and an Oriental Turtle Dove was at Utö.

Red-breasted Nuthatch, Tönsheider Wald, Schleswig-Holstein (Kris De Rouck).

If accepted, an unringed White-headed Duck at Marais d’Harchies from 11th will become Belgium’s fourth record. The Netherlands’s third Alpine Accentor of the autumn spent some time on the pier at Hoek van Holland, with a returning drake Baikal Teal at Zevenhoven and Black Scoter still off Schiermonnikoog.

The first Blyth’s Pipit for the Channel Islands lingered at Pleinmont, Guernsey, where it was joined by the island’s third Little Bunting. A ringtail Pallid Harrier overflew Alderney on 11th, the same day a Eurasian Treecreeper was trapped and ringed. Amazingly, the latter is just the fourth for the Channel Islands and the first for Alderney! In France, the Northern Harrier was back on Ouessant Island, two Lesser Scaup remained at Étang du Curnic and a Spotted Sandpiper was again at Retenue de Pincemaille.

Spain’s third Short-billed Dowitcher – a juvenile – was in Galicia at Ría de Foz, with a Least Sandpiper and two Lesser Scaup also in the province. A Blyth’s Pipit was at Cabo de Peñas, while Brown Boobies were off both Tarifa, Spain and Cascais, Portugal. The second Dusky Warbler for the Canary Islands accompanied a Lesser Scaup on Fuerteventura, with a Pied-billed Grebe again on Terceira, Azores.

5 reasons to visit Tenerife this fall

The Canary Islands are called “paradise” and not only for their incredible nature, blue ocean and sun. It is believed that bohemians come here to take a break from the bustle of the world and, of course, share their “simple human happiness” on Instagram. The Traveling.by editors debunk myths and talk about the advantages of traveling to Tenerife this fall.

Reduced prices for tours

The first and main reason is the availability of the trip. In the Canary Islands you can relax at any time of the year, but most people prefer to take a vacation in the summer. Therefore, after September, there are slightly fewer tourists, and travel companies reduce prices for tours. Why not take the opportunity to relax cheaper? Moreover, in autumn we miss the warm sun so much.

Comfortable weather

The weather in the Canary Islands is almost always good, so there is no such thing as a “velvet season” in Tenerife, or it lasts all year round. The average air temperature in October-November is +25 degrees. It rains a little more often than in summer, but this is not significant. The swimming season on the island never ends. Even in winter, the minimum water temperature does not fall below + 18°C. But autumn is the best time for excursions, walks and sightseeing. And also, if all the stars converge, in the literal sense, you can see a beautiful starfall or look at the night sky through a telescope. The spectacle is unforgettable.

Fruit season

If you are already looking forward to tangerines, persimmons, pomegranates and other “winter” fruits, then in their homeland they are much tastier than in local supermarkets, where they are most often found unripe. In autumn, two seasons meet on the island: when there are still grapes, melons, watermelons, figs, pears and there are already grapefruits. Why not a fruit paradise?

Holidays and festivals

The Spaniards love to celebrate the holidays brightly and sincerely, and nature here helps to make every day a holiday. It is easy to get acquainted with the local folklore: go to one of the Romerias (in our language – City Day).

Is Spain still hot in October and where are the best places to go

The extreme summer heat has gone and it’s a great time for a beach or city holiday

A last blast of summer; an oasis of warmth and light before the cold, dark winter months ahead; or a half-term break with the kids after the stresses of starting a new school year – there are many reasons why people want to holiday in Spain in October. And those who do jet south will find pleasant temperatures and no crowds.

Spain is a vast country, and the climate in the Basque country in the north, for example, is very different to that of the Canary Islands. But whether you are looking for a beach holiday or a city break, Spain has plenty to offer in October.

And the great advantage of heading to Spain in October is the lack of holidaymakers, except for the last week of the month which tends to coincide with half term in England. You won’t have to race for sun loungers, you won’t have to queue to get into museums or theme parks – it’s a chilled end-of-season vibe.

Hottest places in Spain for beach holidays in October

October is perfect for a trip to the Canaries – with Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote the most popular choices. With a maximum daytime temperature of 27C and night-time temperatures around 20C, it is one of the best months to visit.

It is also a sunny time of the year, with an average of 235 hours of sunshine over the month. And rainfall figures tend to be very low.

Slightly nearer in terms of flight time is Costa del Sol, the area of coastline near Malaga. It’s been a firm favourite with Brits for decades and a home-from-home for some.

With an average of seven hours of sunshine per day and daytime temperatures of around 23C, resorts such as Marbella and Puerto Banus enjoy warmer autumn conditions than the rest of Spain. The added advantage is that the sea, after a whole summer of warming, is still perfect for swimming.

Hottest places in Spain for city breaks in October

Cities such as Barcelona, Seville, Madrid and Valencia are popular destinations for short breaks. In October, temperatures are still very pleasant and flight prices tend to be lower.

Spanish cities are a year-round attraction, but they can get very hot in the summer months. So, October is perfect for exploring museums, stopping at pavement cafes and shopping.

    Barcelona in October

Daytime temperatures in Barcelona are around 23C, while at night, the temperature should not get any lower than 17C. Rainfall is higher than in the summer – you might get a few storms

    Madrid in October

October is the ideal month to visit Madrid, with temperatures at much more comfortable levels (around 21C by day). Rainy days are not uncommon, but generally it is ideal for sightseeing.

    Seville in October

Seville is still very warm in October, with daytime temperature reaching 26C. Rain should not be a big issue.

    Valencia in October

Valencia is another warm city in October, with temperatures regularly reaching 24C by day. On a night time, it should not be any cooler than 15C.

G-20 summit casts spotlight on Bali’s tourism revival

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AP) — Bali wants the world to know it’s back.

Dozens of world leaders and other dignitaries are traveling to the Indonesian island for the G-20 summit, drawing a welcome spotlight on the revival of the tropical destination’s vital tourism sector.

Tourism is the main source of income on this idyllic “island of the gods,” which is renowned for its tropical beaches, terraced rice paddies, mystical temples and colorful spiritual offerings.

The pandemic hit Bali harder than most places in Indonesia.

Before the pandemic, 6.2 million foreigners arrived in Bali each year. Its lively tourism scene — fueled by hard-partying clubgoers, chilled surfers and spiritual bliss-seekers alike — faded after the first case of COVID-19 was found in Indonesia in March 2020. Restaurants and resorts shut and many workers returned to their villages to try to get by.

    PreviousNext

Foreign tourist arrivals dropped to only 1 million in 2020, mostly in the first few months of the year, and then to a few dozen in 2021, according to government data. More than 92,000 people employed in tourism lost their jobs and the average occupancy rate of Bali hotels fell below 20%.

The island’s economy contracted 9.3% in 2020 from the year before and shrank further in 2021.

“The coronavirus outbreak has hammered the local economy horribly,” said Dewa Made Indra, regional secretary of Bali province. “Bali is the region with the most severe economic contraction.”

The island is home to more than 4 million people, who are mainly Hindu in the mostly Muslim archipelago nation.

After closing to all visitors early in the pandemic, Bali reopened to Indonesians from other parts of the country in mid-2020. That helped, but then a surge of cases in July 2021 again emptied the island’s normally bustling beaches and streets. Authorities restricted public activities, closed the airport and shuttered all shops, bars, sit-down restaurants, tourist attractions and many other places on the island.

Monkeys deprived of their preferred food source — bananas, peanuts and other goodies given to them by tourists — took to raiding villagers’ homes in their search for something tasty.

The island reopened to domestic travelers a month later, in August, but in all of 2021 only 51 foreign tourists visited.

Things are looking much better now. Shops and restaurants in places like Nusa Dua, a resort area where the G-20 meeting is being held, and in other towns like Sanur and Kuta have reopened, though business is slow and many businesses and hotels are still closed or have scaled back operations.

The reopening of Bali’s airport to international flights and now the thousands coming for the G-20 summit and other related events have raised hopes for a stronger turnaround, Dewa said.

More than 1.5 million foreign tourists and 3.1 million domestic travelers had visited Bali as of October this year.

Embracing a push toward more sustainable models of tourism, Bali has rolled out a digital nomad visa program, called the “second home visa” and due to take effect in December. It’s also among 20 destinations Airbnb recently announced it was partnering with for remote work, also including places in the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

The recovery will likely take time, even if COVID-19 is kept at bay.

Gede Wirata, who had to lay off most of the 4,000 people working in his hotels, restaurants, clubs and a cruise ship during the worst of the pandemic, found that when it came time to rehire them many had found jobs overseas or in other travel businesses.

The G-20 is a welcome boost. “This is an opportunity for us to rise again from the collapse,” he said.

    There’s a way to go.

“The situation has not yet fully recovered, but whatever the case, life has to go on,” said Wayan Willy, who runs a tourist agency in Bali with some friends. Before the pandemic, most of their clients were from overseas. Now it’s mostly domestic tourists. But even those are few and far between.

Bali has suffered greatly in the past. At times, the island’s majestic volcanos have rumbled to life, at times erupting or belching ash.

The dark cloud of the suicide bombings in Bali’s beach town of Kuta that killed 202 mostly foreign tourists in 2002 lingered for years, devastating tourism on the island usually known for its peace and tranquility.

Recent torrential rains brought floods and landslides in some areas, adding to the burdens for communities working to rebuild their tourism businesses.

When the situation started to improve, Yuliani Djajanegara, who runs a business making traditional beauty items like massage oils, natural soaps and aromatherapy products under the brand name Bali Tangi, got back to work.

She had closed her factory in 2020 when orders from hotels, spas and salons in the U.S., Europe, Russia and the Maldives dried up, taking orders for her products from more than 1,000 kilograms (1 ton) to almost nothing.

So far, Djajanegara has rehired 15 of the 60 workers she had been obliged to lay off during the dark days of the pandemic.

    She’s hopeful, but cautious.

“Tourism in Bali is like a sand castle,” Djajanegara said. “It is beautiful, but it can be washed away by the waves.”
