Europe in October- Where’s hot, where’s fun and where’s best to visit?

Looking for the best places to visit in October in Europe? Wondering what Europe in October is like, where the weather is best or what there is to do in Europe in October? Here’s everything you need to know

JUMP AHEAD TO…

Why visit Europe in October?

I’ll be honest, October is one of our favourite times to explore Europe. The crowds have mostly gone, yet the weather is still pleasant in many places and the autumn colours of the leaves as they turn is just breathtaking.

We spend a lot of time touring Europe in our Motorhome and we often do our ‘big trips’ in September, October or November. When our daughter was younger, we’d often use October Half Term break to do some awesome adventures- and that hasn’t really stopped even though she’s now left school.

Of course, if you can avoid the holiday period completely, even better- you’ll find some amazing places across Europe which are wonderful at this time of year.

We created a post about the best places to visit in Autumn in Europe (if you’re visiting Europe in September or November) but below are some of the best places which we specifically love in Europe in October.

Europe in October weather

Most places in Europe in October have pretty good weather. Of course, this can never be guaranteed, but even England and Norway are still great to travel to- there’s just enough daylight to make it worthwhile and the scenery is fantastic.

The further south in Europe you go, the better the weather and temperatures become. Spain is still around 20c, whereas Croatia and Greece can be 25c+!

What is there to do in Europe in October?

So many things.

Nearly every attraction in Europe is still open up until October half-term school break (around the middle of October). There are also plenty of festivals/ events on for harvest, music, dance, arts and much more.

Once you decide on a city or country to visit, have a look online at their tourist board for events taking place during that time. Of course, if you want to visit Oktoberfest or any other German beer festival, you’ll need to book WAY in advance!

Ok, ready? Let’s discover some the best things to do and places to visit in Europe in October. If you’d like some help, here’s how we plan a road trip to Europe.

The UK- one of the best European countries to visit in October

The Needles, UK- one of the best European places to visit in October

The United Kingdom in October is magic. Fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and easy access to all of the incredible places you’ve heard about. Heck, even London is pleasant at this time of year.

Where should you see in the UK in October?

So many places! We spent a wonderful week exploring these unmissable places in Cornwall in October, including the famous Tintagel Castle and Merlin’s Cave.

Other places in England we recommend in October include the Isle of Wight, the Cotswolds, the Lake District and the Northumberland Coast. You can see more details of all our favourite England Road trip ideas here.

We also loved visiting the Brecon Beacons and South Wales on our Wales Road Trip– we can’t wait to go back for more.

Lastly, Scotland is spectacular at this time of year. The changing autumn colours, the festivals and the sheer beauty of the landscape- this should definitely be on your European bucket list. Here are some of the best scenic drives in Scotland to whet your appetite.

If you’d like help planning your Scotland trip, here’s our favourite 7-10 day Scotland road trip itinerary– with all the highlights you need to see.

What is the weather like in the UK in October?

The weather in most of the UK is pretty pleasant. Obviously, northern Scotland has more chance of cold than southern England, but you’re unlikely to find snow anywhere.

As always when you’re travelling to England, bring a waterproof jacket, thick socks, a hat, an umbrella, a swimsuit, shorts, sunglasses and suncream. Coz you just never know!

Dolomites- one of the best places to visit in October in Europe

Dolomites- one of the best places to visit in October in Europe

We explored the Dolomites last October and it was AMAZING. Seriously, it’s impossible to explain to anyone who hasn’t been how incredible this area is- and the colours in October were fantastic.

Where are the best places to visit in October?

We visited the Dolomites in our motorhome and it’s the perfect way to explore the area, but if you’re travelling by car there are plenty of hotels and B & B’s available. We stayed in the Dolomites for 3 days- here’s our perfect 3-day Dolomites itinerary which you can totally steal. 🙂

We spent 2 nights camping in our van at the top of Tre Cime di Lavaredo– which was an experience. The view of the sunrise coming over the peaks was incredible but the coolest part was being totally swamped by the mist, before the clouds moved away.

What’s the weather like in October?

It was very pleasant in the Dolomites in October. We wore jeans and t-shirts- so it wasn’t really hot but also wasn’t freezing. It was the perfect time for hiking and exploring the area on foot. If you want more cities, here are some of the best places to go campervanning in Italy and enjoy some culture.

Switzerland- Europe’s hidden gem in October

Rhine Falls, Switzerland- Europe’s hidden gem in October

We love Switzerland. We’ve visited the country many times, at all times of the year but October is one of our favourites- again, because of the fewer crowds and the spectacular scenery.

Where are the best places in Switzerland to visit in October?

There are many places we could recommend, but a couple of the places we KNOW are amazing in October include the Rhine Falls– one of Europe’s largest waterfalls and also the Gelmerbahn Funicular and the Gelmersee Lake- one of the most spectacular places we have ever visited!

What is the weather like in Switzerland in October?

Up in the Alps, it can get chilly, even on sunny days, so if you visit Gelmersee be sure to wrap up warmly. At lower altitudes, temperatures are still mid-teens (c), so very pleasant.

Oktoberfest- one of the best things to do in Europe in October

Oktoberfest- one of the best things to do in Europe in October

Recommended by Masha Kleshcheva from Fingertip Travels

What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival! In my opinion, it’s an absolute must, once in a lifetime, bucket list worthy event!

It takes place in Munich, Germany, at the beginning of October, and lasts 16-18 days.

There are 14 large beer tents set up in a massive fairground, with smaller tents and carnival type events all around. Each tent has a slightly different culture and atmosphere, but they all include traditional Bavarian food, lots of music and singing, and of course many steins of beer!

RELATED: Bizarre Customs and traditions in Europe that you’ve never heard of!

What do you do at Oktoberfest?

When you first arrive in Munich, you need to get a traditional Bavarian outfit: lederhosen for men and dirndls for women. Everybody wears these, it’s not just a German or just a tourist thing, and it really heightens the celebratory vibes.

My advice for visiting Oktoberfest on a budget is to get there on a weekday in the early afternoon, and plant your butt at a free table in a beer tent. (If you want to reserve a table, do this at least 6 months in advance). Then stay at your table all day, eat traditional food, and make some friends.

In the evening is when the party really starts, and you find yourself right in the middle of it with a nice table! Don’t be shy to make friends, have lots of German beer, and sing lots of songs! I still think of Oktoberfest when I hear ‘Country Road,’ which is for some reason an Oktoberfest classic. Honestly, one day at Oktoberfest was enough for me: I couldn’t imagine going back the next day!

You can stay anywhere in Munich to attend Oktoberfest: public transportation takes you straight to the festival. Be sure to book lodging early, however: places book out six months to a year in advance!

Norway- possible the best European country to visit in October

October in Europe- the first chance of Northern light sightings

Ever wanted to see the Aurora Borealis/ Northern Lights? We have been lucky enough to see them a few times as we’ve travelled Europe.

One of the best places to see the Northern Lights in Europe is Norway. This incredible country is still perfectly visitable in October and you have a great chance of seeing the lights in the evening (although, of course, nothing in nature is guaranteed!)

Where should you visit in Norway in October?

Anywhere. Everywhere. You can’t go wrong. Some of our favourite places include the awe-inspiring Trollstigen road, riding the Flamsbana railway, seeing  Sverd y fjell, the Swords in the Rock and walking behind the waterfall at Steinsdalsfossen

It is possible to travel Norway on a budget, but you do need to keep eating/ drinking out to a minimum.

What’s the weather like in Norway in October?

Starting to get chilly, but still with a possibility of sunny days. The further north you go, the cooler it will start to get- especially at night. You might even get some snow. This is another time to bring a wide range of clothing, including coats, sunglasses, shorts and sturdy walking boots!

Vienna- one of the best cities in Europe in October

Europe in October- Vienna is one of the best cities to enjoy it.

Recommended by Carine & Derek | We did it our way

After spending 2 days in Vienna in October, we highly recommend travelling to this beautiful city during this time of year. It’s simply magical.

What are the highlights of Vienna in October?

The best things about visiting Vienna in the fall is that the crowds will not be around. Most of the famous tourist sights like the Schönbrunn Palace, the Gloriette, the Hofburg Palace, the Prater, and any museum you want to visit in the MuseumsQuartier will have shorter wait times and fewer people around, making it all the more enjoyable to visit and take in the sights.

Of course, if you can visit Vienna in November, the famous Viennese Christmas markets (some of the best and biggest Christmas Markets in Europe) will be open from mid-November. This makes exploring the city during this time even more magical. Just be aware that a few of the attractions may close while they set up the markets.

What is the weather like in Vienna in October?

The weather cools down just enough to make it comfortable to walk around all day. If it gets too cool for your liking, you can always pop into a cute café and enjoy some sachertorte and a coffee to warm up!

Strasbourg, France- perfect in October

Europe in October- Strasbourg is the perfect European city to visit

Recommended by Erin | Love To Travel, Stay-Eat-Do

Strasbourg is located directly east of Paris and is on French side of the border with Germany, just minutes from the Rhine River.

What is there to do in Strasbourg in October?

The list of things to do in Strasbourg is endless. Wander through cute pedestrianised streets and meander along the canals through La Petite France.

Enjoy dining at the various bars, cafes and restaurants or get a coffee to go with a patisserie from a local boulangerie.

Visit the Cathedrale Notre Dame and marvel at the Astronomical Clock, climb the tower and enjoy the views of this picture-perfect French village. Visit the many museums or visit France’s biggest mosque.

While you are there, be sure to hire a motorhome or car and go on a tour of the Alsace Region. Stop in local villages and explore all they have to offer. Enjoy the cobbled stone streets in Euguisheim and visit the walled village in Riquewihr. Be sure to make time to also visit the 12th-century fortress of High Koenigsbourg as well.

Strasbourg and the Alsace region is known for their fabulous vineyards, for the wine of course, as well as their outlook and countryside. Take a walk through the vines and enjoy some of the local wines, with their speciality being white wines and a Riesling.

What is the weather like in Strasbourg France in October?

The weather is perfect for getting out and about on foot or by bike and Strasbourg and the Alsace region is the best place to do exactly this. It’s around mid-late teens (celsius) so perfect for exploring.

Where else is good in France in October?

There are many other places in France to visit in October. Here are 11 French road trip ideas you have to experience. You are need to see these top 10 cities in France and if you like history, here are 7 of the best historical places in France.

Prague- another great city to enjoy October in Europe

Prague- another great city to enjoy October in Europe

Recommended by Adriana | Czech the World

Prague belongs to one of Europe’s most fascinating places and October is the perfect month to visit the city of a hundred spires.

Why visit Prague in October?

Prague is less crowded at this time and, as well as enjoying the beautiful Autumn colours, you can also enjoy the festival of lights – Signal Festival.

The Signal Festival is held annually in October and you can see the lighting installations in streets and public spaces across the city, including famous historical landmarks.

What are the highlights of Prague?

Be sure to visit Prague Castle, the largest historical Castle complex in Europe. There, you will also find the St. Vitus Cathedral, one of the most richly decorated cathedrals in central Europe.

Another symbol of Prague is the Charles Bridge – a historical stone bridge decorated with 30 Baroque statues. On the other side of the river, there is the Old Town, where you can see the famous Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Square.

Other popular sites are also the Jewish Quarter with Spanish Synagogue and Old Jewish cemetery, the dominant of the Old Town Square – the Church of our Lady before Týn (Týnský charm), Wenceslas Square, and National Museum.

How long should you spend in Prague?

If you are a fan of historical cities, plan at least 2-3 days. Prague is full of the romantic cobblestone streets with Gothic and Renaissance buildings where you can find lovely cafes or pubs with world-famous beer. Czech beer isn’t just great, it’s also very cheap (less than 2 Euros for half a litre of draft beer or less than 1 Euro for a beer in a supermarket).

Prague is not the only beautiful place worth visiting in October. Get some inspiration and check also other amazing places to visit in the Czech Republic.

Stuttgart, Germany- a European city with lots to do in October

Europe in October- Stuttgart- the world’s second largest beer festival

Recommended by Diana | Travels in Poland

Oh, go on then. Let’s do another German beer festival. After all- it’s one of the highlights of Europe in October!

Did you know the world’s second-largest beer festival, and a much less crowded one, is in Stuttgart.

What is the Cannstatter Volksfest?

The Cannstatter Volksfest is a three-week festival which runs every September and October.  Situated alongside the Neckar River in Stuttgart, the Volksfest spreads out over dozens of hectares of land.

There are hundreds of vendors, including local, regional and national artisans, amusement park rides, food stands, both local and international, and dozens of beer tents.  Beer tent reservation is typically done online and reservations are usually done several weeks to several months in advance.

What is the Cannstatter Volksfest like?

The beer festival is family-friendly and typically sees families attending during the day when there is a more casual atmosphere.  The beer tents usually have German foods or snacks that go well with beer.  Some of these foods include potatoes, chicken, sauerkraut, and bratwurst.

As with other beer festivals in Germany, there is specific attire to wear.  Dirndls are traditional German dresses worn by women, while lederhosen is a man’s outfit.   These can be purchased at many German stores beforehand or in Stuttgart whilst visiting.

Fun fact: the festival has an official mascot called the Wasenhasi, a rabbit that you may see walking around the festival.

If you will be attending the festival, it is best to stay near the centre, as this will give you a true German experience and you can easily take the tram in.  A great place to stay at is the Le Meridien in Stuttgart or the more budget-friendly Hilton Garden Inn, which is also closer to the festival grounds.

Where is hot in Europe in October? Spain is!

Where is hot in Europe in October? Spain is!

Spain is one of the best places to visit in October in Europe as it’s still warm. Like, swim in the sea warm.

We love visiting Spain in October, especially with our motorhome so we can park near the beach. If you want some ideas, here are some fabulous places to visit in Mainland Spain for sunshine.

We recommend taking the time to explore some places inland as well as on the coast- the weather is nice in all areas and you’ll find many beautiful hidden gems up in the Spanish mountains.

Don’t forget to try some authentic Spanish cuisine- it’s one of the best foodie locations in Europe!

Crete- a perfect place to visit in Europe in October

Crete- a perfect place to visit in Europe in October

Crete is the largest Greek island and has plenty to offer. From stunning beaches, fascinating historical sites and excellent hiking routes, there is something for every taste and budget.

Why is Crete the perfect destination in Europe in October?

The temperatures drop from the unbearable heat of the summer to pleasant mid-20s degree Celsius and the sky is still blue. It’s also the end of the season in the Greek islands which means fewer crowds and cheaper room rates.

What is there to do on Crete?

Explore Crete’s most gorgeous beaches, such as Balos beach with perfect turquoise water and soft white sand contrasting with a volcanic, rusty and rocky backdrop. Other amazing must-see beaches in Crete include Elafonisi and Falasarna beach.

If you’re more adventurous, there is Samaria Gorge to be conquered situated in the National Park. Hiking the gorge is a genuinely gratifying experience with some incredible scenery. At the end of the hike, there is a beautiful beach to reward your hard work.

For history fans, there are various archaeological sites to explore. The most famous one is Knossos, which is believed to be the oldest city in Europe dating from the Bronze Age and it was the political centre of the Minoan Civilization.

Don’t forget to indulge in mouth-watering Greek cuisine. Sample Pasticcio, Souvlaki, fresh feta cheese and Tzatziki and wash it down with the finest Greek wine. Head to Chania – a charming harbour city with many great restaurants overlooking old, Venetian port.

Athens, Greece- one of the best European cities in October

Athens, Greece- one of the best European cities in October

Recommended by Nina | Lemons and Luggage

When most people think of Greece they imagine a beach vacation on a gorgeous island. But Greece’s capital Athens is one of the best places in Europe to visit in October.

Why is Athens great in October?

Travelling to Athens in Autumn will help you find cheaper flights and accommodation. And because it’s the off-season, there will be fewer tourists. However, the weather will still be better than in many other European cities- mid 20s on average.

Some things are actually better at this time of year. For example, it’s less tiring to climb up the Acropolis when the temperatures are lower. The same goes for Lykavittos Hill, the highest point in Athens which is perfect for sunset watching.

What is there to Do?

There are, of course, several ancient sites in Athens aside from the Acropolis, such as the Roman and Ancient Agora, the Kerameikos cemetery, or the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

At the Acropolis Museum, you’ll learn all about the history of the Acropolis and ancient Athens. And if you’re an archaeology buff you must visit the National Archaeological Museum which is home to some of the most significant Greek archaeological artifacts.

In Plaka and Anafiotika you will find colorful neoclassical buildings as well as white houses that give you a taste of the Greek islands.

Food is always a good idea, no matter the season! You’ve probably tried Greek food before, but it will be much more authentic in Greece. If you’re vegan or vegetarian there are also several vegan restaurants in Athens to visit.

Lastly, the changing of the guards every hour is one of the main things to do in Athens that you really shouldn’t miss.

So, have you decided where you’re going to visit in Europe in October? Whether you go this year or next, you’ll definitely have an incredible time.

Global climate summary for October 2022

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information released the agency’s October 2022 global climate report this week. Below are some highlights.

Global temperature

The October global surface temperature was 1.60 °F (0.89 °C) above the 20th-century average of 57.1 °F (14.0 °C). This was the fourth-warmest October in the 143-year record. October 2022 marked the 46th consecutive October and the 454th consecutive month with temperatures, at least nominally, above the 20th-century average.

(top) Temperatures in October 2022 compared to the 1991-2020 average, with places that were warmer than average colored red and places that were cooler than average colored blue. (bottom) October temperatures compared to the 20th-century average for each year from 1880 to 2022. NOAA Climate.gov image, based on data from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information.

Globally, land-only temperatures for October ranked second warmest on record, trailing October 2015 by 0.09 °F (0.05 °C). Unusually warm temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere land surface resulted in the warmest October land temperatures on record for the hemisphere, surpassing the previous record set in 2021 by 0.05 °F (0.03 °C). Combined with ocean temperatures, overall temperature in the Northern Hemisphere ranked second warmest on record after 2015.

Europe had its warmest October on record at 2.6°C (4.6°F) above the 1910-2000 average. This surpassed the previous record, set in 2020, by 0.38°C (0.68°F). More than seven countries in Europe recorded their warmest or joint-warmest October on record.

  • Austria had its warmest October on record. Austria’s national weather service reported that the average temperature was 2.8°C above the 1991-2020 baseline in the lowlands, and 4.0°C warmer in the mountains.
  • According to MeteoSwiss, Switzerland had its warmest October since the country began its records in 1865, with an average temperature 3.7°C above the 1991-2020 average.
  • Belgium tied 2001 for its warmest October on record, 3.1°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average, according to Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute.
  • MeteoFrance reported that France had its warmest October since records began in 1945, about 3.5°C above the 1991-2020 normal.
  • Spain recorded its warmest October since records began in 1961.
  • Germany tied 2001 for its warmest October on record according to the German Meteorological Service.
  • As reported by MeteoLux, October in Luxembourg tied a 2006 record for the warmest on record at 2.9°C above the 1991-2020 average.
  • According to the Ministry of the Environment and Space, Slovenia had its warmest October since at least 1950 at 3.2°C above the 1981-2010 average.

Global precipitation

  • The long-running (since 2020) La Niña provided background conditions for floods in Australia, South Asia and the Maritime Continent, and West Africa.
  • Precipitation deficits dominated North America (except for Arizona and New Mexico), which continued drought over large areas and low flow in the Mississippi River.
  • Western Europe reverted to rainfall deficits for October, endured a heat wave, and had its drought reinforced.

Percent difference from average precipitation across the world in October 2022. Places that were wetter than average are green; places that were drier than average are brown. The influence of La Niña is obvious across the tropical Pacific, with a broad band of drier-than-average conditions in the central/eastern part of the basin, and a strong wetter-than-average signal over the Maritime Continent. NOAA Climate.gov map based on data form the Global Precipitation Climatology Project.

October precipitation was generally less than normal across the western, central, and southeastern U.S., Central America, southern Europe, central Asia, southern South America, as well as across parts of eastern China and southwestern Asia. Wetter-than-normal conditions were notable across parts of northern and northwestern Europe, southern central Asia, central India, northern Oceania, and eastern and southern Australia.

Where are the hottest places in Europe at different times of the year? | Tour Operator, Travel Agency Premium Travel

The most diverse climatic conditions among all European countries, of course, have developed in Spain – from the cool Atlantic coast in the north to the scorching tourist resorts of the Mediterranean. And this is consistent with the general rule: the farther south, the warmer. But is this always the case at different times of the year?

Andalusia is the hottest region in Spain and Europe in general. In cities like Seville and Cordoba, the average summer temperature is above 36 degrees. nine0003

In Seville, recognized as the hottest city in the country , the average annual temperature is plus 19 degrees: 25. 4 during the day, and at night it drops to 13 degrees Celsius.

However, every year there are a few days when it is hotter than 40 degrees outside.

Seville also holds the oldest temperature record. In 1881, 50.0°C was recorded there in the shade.

The capital of Madrid can compete with Seville – in May and June, Madrid is even a few degrees warmer than Seville, although the heat does not last long. Indeed, sometimes the hinterland, including Madrid, simply lacks the cool coastal breezes. nine0003

In modern history, the official record was set by another Andalusian city – Montoro, in July 2017 there were 47.3 degrees.

Seville remains the warmest place in Spain in winter , the temperature in December is about 16 degrees.

Between January and April the weather throughout Spain is great for outdoor activities, hiking or cycling.

In May and June, the air warms up to 20-25 degrees, which opens up opportunities for recreation in cities. nine0003

During the summer months, the resorts Costa del Sol on the coast of Andalusia warm up to 35 degrees, while there is traditionally very little rain.

Even in the cooler areas of the north coast, such as Bilbao, late summer temperatures can regularly exceed 25 degrees.

In autumn, in the hottest part of the country Andalusia – is stable around 30 , in Madrid it is only a little cooler, while in Barcelona it is about 25 degrees, but with a warm sea. nine0003

Temperatures throughout Spain drop rapidly from early September to late October, but this is a good season for wine and food tourism.

At Christmas the warmest place is the same Seville with daytime temperatures around 16 degrees.

But in the north of the country at this time of the year it is much colder: in La Coruña in the northwest it is only 13 degrees, in Bilbao it is about the same.

In Madrid during the Christmas holidays the air cools down to 10 degrees, in Barcelona on the east coast during the day about 14 degrees, as, by the way, in Mallorca. nine0003

The Canary Islands , off the west coast, are part of Spanish territory and boast comfortable warmth all year round, averaging 24 degrees.

In the Balearic Islands – Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca – the average annual temperature is 20 degrees.

Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist cities in the world. The city boasts only 60 rainy days a year and 28-degree heat during the summer months. nine0003

Where to go to rest in October at sea and abroad

If your vacation is in the middle of autumn, then don’t rush to get upset – this is one of the best times to travel.

When choosing where to go on vacation in October, proceed, first of all, from your desires and preferences. nine0003

Excursion tours for the curious

If you are a fan of excursions and all kinds of historical antiquities, then head for Europe.

In general, Europe is visited by tourists at any time of the year, but in summer there are especially many of them. A trip to European countries in October is the best option for sightseeing, devoid of the traditional summer heat and tourist crowds at every turn.

Germany can be singled out separately from all European countries. Germany in October is, first of all, Oktoberfest. nine0003

A merry festival where even excessive drinking will be appropriate. Well, in addition to beer, of course, you can also see the sights.

When choosing where to go on vacation in October, one should not discount another wonderful European country – the Czech Republic. While Oktoberfest is in full swing in Germany, the Czech Republic is celebrating the feast of young wine.

Another option where you can go on vacation abroad in October is Israel.

And the weather there is still beachy (up to +32 degrees during the day), and you can finally touch the world-famous Western Wall, go around all the sights (and there are many in Israel), and even witness the national holiday of love, annually celebrated by local residents in this autumn month. nine0003

Beach holidays on the seas – warm your bones

Well, if no sightseeing charms and relics of ancient civilizations can replace sunny beaches and the sound of the surf, then you need to urgently decide where to go to rest in October at sea.

The choice of places to go in October with “beach destinations” is impressive.

Egypt

The warmest sea and gentle sun you will find in Egypt. It is difficult to find a better place to go on vacation, because it is in October that the velvet season comes to the Egyptian shores. nine0003

Conditions for a beach holiday in Egypt in October are ideal: the air temperature does not rise above thirty degrees, sea water is heated to +26.

Add to this inexpensive prices for tours and the opportunity to see the pyramids and other Egyptian sightseeing delights without dying from the fifty-degree heat, you get a chic vacation.

And the excellent infrastructure of the country will allow you to comfortably relax with your child if you are planning a family vacation.

Explore selections of the best hotels in Egypt according to traveler reviews.

Cyprus

For those who are not accustomed to saving on the service, Cyprus is suitable for the October “beach walk”.

Autumn Cyprus is good if you have firmly decided to settle on the beach for the entire holiday and no cultural events will force you to leave it.

You can lie on Cypriot beaches at least all day long: in October the air temperature does not rise above +27, which will allow you to enjoy your vacation without overheating and burning. nine0003

United Arab Emirates

If the Egyptian velvet season and the mild Cypriot weather do not inspire you, but you want to move from Russian October to a hot, scorching summer, you are in the United Arab Emirates.

That’s where summer is in full swing despite October! The air temperature reaches +35 degrees, the water heats up to +28.

In such heat, one can forget that it is the middle of autumn. And if you leave the beach for one day, you can see a lot of interesting things: there are a lot of urban miracles in the country, beautiful mosques, and it is in October that camel races take place. nine0003

Tunisia

Africa in October also pleases with good summer weather. The best African country for an October holiday is Tunisia.

The weather here is summer, the daytime temperature can reach +30, the water temperature rises to +26 degrees.

There are also rainy days, but they are not so frequent as to spoil your holiday. By the way, they can be devoted to visiting various sights and going to cafes and bars.

Canary Islands

Spain is good in October only if it is the Canary Islands. If you decide where to go to rest in October at sea, then the rest of the resorts in Spain are unlikely to please you with the hot sun and warm sea. nine0003

If material costs are not decisive, then go there – the rest of the Canary Islands is not cheap, but very good.

Morocco

Morocco is also suitable for beach joys, but it is worth remembering that, despite the heat of the day, the nights in October are already cool, so a warm jacket will be useful in a suitcase.

Holidays in Russia in October

Well, if you firmly decided not to leave the borders of our vast homeland, then you can try to embrace at least a small fraction of what our land is rich in.

Is fuerteventura windy in october: A Complete Guide for the Weather in the Canaries

Опубликовано: February 17, 2023 в 4:07 pm

Flag Beach (Fuerteventura)

In the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the island of the wind, the sand and the sun. Flag Beach is its most popular beach. You’ll find kitespot Flag Beach after a 30 min drive from Fuerteventura airport.

Flag Beach is located in the Natural Park Dunes of Corralejo. It is a large sandy beach with dunes and some cutting stones in medium/low tide.

Thermal Wind

The thermal wind is N-NW (locals call it Alisios). It isn’t exactly thermal, it is an isobaric steady wind that gets reinforced during the warmest time of the day. The windiest months are January to August, being March to July the best. However, it’s possible to kite all year.

In summer there will be about 20-25 knots, so you’ll need a 8-9m kite (75 kg). During the rest of the year it is less windy, about 15-20 knots, so a 10-12m kite (75kg) will be the best option.

Water conditions

Flag Beach is a spot with choppy and clean waves. There are different types and of different sizes depending on the point of the beach: places further south tend to have more waves.

In summer, you can kite wearing only boardshorts and a rashguard. A 3/2 wetsuit is recommended for the coldest months.

Launch Area

Flag Beach is huge. There is room for everyone to set up and launch. Just be careful, don’t start near the rocks and look for them under the water so you or your board doesn’t get damaged.

Lessons & Gear

Get your lessons and buy your gear at Line-up Fuerteventura & Fuerteventura Kite School.

Level of riding

Kitespot Flag Beach is suitable for all levels.

Warnings

On Flag Beach there are some rocks on the sand and under the water. There aren’t many and are huge, but you must pay attention not to crash or cut yourself with them.

Facilities

Parking your car could be a problem because Flag Beach is not only the favourite beach for kiters, but also for locals from Corralejo town and tourists. You should not expect to park fast and easily, especially in high season.

At the southern portion you can find some hotels directly on the beach.

It is a wild and protected beach so please, keep it clean!

Other activities

Fuerteventura has the best Spanish beaches with its turquoise water and white sand, but sunbathing is not the only option here. There are awesome spots to learn how to surf, like La Pared. There is also a paradisiac island just in front of Flag Beach, Lobos, which is worth discovering.

Nearby kitespot

Make sure to also check kitespot Sotavento and its lagoon or wavespot Piedra Playa.

Meltemi Winds In Greece: The Windy Greek Islands

If you are planning to spend your summer holidays in the Cyclades, you’ve probably heard of the Meltemi winds. Here is some information on the windy Greek islands and how to cope with them when on vacation in Greece!

What are the Meltemi winds?

In a nutshell, the meltemi winds are strong, dry, seasonal winds that appear all over the Aegean. We call them meltemi or meltemia, which is the plural form of the word in Greek.

Depending on where in Greece you are, they may come from the north, north-east or north-west.

If you are familiar with the Beaufort wind scale, meltemi winds can reach around 7-8 Beaufort, or even more. In certain parts of the country, the winds may occasionally be exceeding speeds of 100 km / hour!

You can easily imagine the answer to your question “Is it windy in Greece”.

Meltemi Winds in Greece

However, it’s not all bad. The meltemi helps bring down the scorching summer temperatures and clears the atmosphere, providing great visibility.

If it wasn’t for the meltemi, temperatures in the Aegean would be a lot higher, and most people would find it uncomfortable to visit the Greek islands in summer.

Remember the occasional heatwaves in Europe? Well, the Cyclades rarely face this issue!

Meteorology buffs will find it interesting that the meltemi wind is connected to the Indian monsoons and the Azores anticyclone. It can also be affected by rainfall in Central Europe and the Balkans.

Furthermore, it’s related to the fact that there are so many islands in the Aegean. Apparently, channelling of the wind between the islands causes its speed to increase.

I won’t go into more detail here. You can find plenty of information online on what causes these strong seasonal winds. Let’s get to some practical info!

When do the meltemi winds happen?

The meltemi winds in Greece are seasonal. They are strongest during July and August, but you may also come across them in June or September.

If you are visiting Greece in spring or late September, you will probably miss them, though it’s not certain.

The meltemi generally blows during the daytime, typically being at its strongest during the afternoon and early evening. That said, it’s not uncommon to have full-blown meltemi wind even in the early morning or during the night.

This is why, in typical Greek fashion, I suggest bringing a light jacket with you, even if you are visiting in summer!

There’s no guarantee over how many days the meltemi will go on for. On some years, you may get periods of a few windy days, followed by a calmer week. In the past few years, the meltemi wind was prevalent for most of July and August, as well as outside this period.

Which Greek islands are most affected by the meltemi winds?

Generally speaking, there are several windy Greek islands. The groups of islands that are more affected by the meltemi are the ones in the Aegean, such as the Cyclades. Have a look here for an introduction to the Greek island groups.

People who have visited Mykonos, Santorini or Naxos in summer will be familiar with the Cyclades wind. If you have been to Andros or Tinos, you may have experienced some of the strongest meltemi winds. These two islands are among the windiest in the Cyclades.

Other islands that can be impacted by the meltemi are the Sporades, the islands of Northeastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. The Aegean side of Evia island is also very exposed, as is the area between Evia and Andros.

High winds in Crete can also be super strong. Crete’s long sandy beaches are very open to the winds. In fact, swimming is not allowed on very windy days, as it can be very dangerous.

Finally, if you are visiting mainland Greece, some areas will be windier than others. As an example, the Aegean beaches of Pelion peninsula are not protected at all.

You may be wondering why western Greece and the Ionian islands are not affected much. This is because of the tall mountain ranges in mainland Greece. These act as a wind-stopper, protecting the Ionian side and the west coast of Greece.

Will the meltemi wind affect my holiday?

I won’t lie, as I’ve been there myself, more times than I can remember. The meltemi winds can be difficult to get used to, especially for people who didn’t expect them. And they can affect your holiday in Greece, but only if you let them!

If you are mostly looking to lie on the beach all day long, the meltemi wind may affect your vacation to a certain extent. On some days, staying on the beach will not be as relaxing as you hoped. The wind will blow up the sand, which can get really annoying. This is more so if you are lying on a towel right on the beach, rather than a lounger.

Take it from me – there is not much you can do about it. I’ve spent most of my summer holidays on the windy Greek islands, and no meltemi will ever stop me going. Plus, as mentioned earlier, not everything about the meltemi wind is negative. If you find that summer in Greece is too hot, imagine what it would have been like without any wind.

How to cope with the meltemi winds

If you are visiting Greece during the meltemi season my best advice, that any local will confirm, is to avoid the beaches facing north. As the winds are coming from the north, the northern beaches are the ones that will be most affected.

Your hotel owner or other locals should be able to point you to the best sheltered beaches for meltemi days. They are the best people to ask. Occasionally, they will point you to a pebbly beach, or a rocky outcrop.

If you are on a bigger Greek island like Naxos or Andros, you can always find a beach that is fairly protected. This might mean that you may need to drive a long distance. This is part of exploring the islands though, so for most people it shouldn’t be an issue.

Now there are also some smaller islands, like Iraklia, where there are very few protected beaches. On these days, you may want to spend less time on the beach and do other things instead.

If you can visit outside July and August, you have better chances of skipping the windy days. On the plus side, not only will the islands be less crowded, but accommodation prices will typically be lower.

Still, if you can only visit the Greek islands in July and August, go for it. You can rest assured that it’s still worth visiting – all these other travellers can’t be wrong!

Swimming and the meltemi winds

Sand getting in your eyes may be annoying, but the most important thing when the meltemi blows are the waves. Even if you are a strong swimmer, you should be very careful, or even avoid swimming altogether.

Combined with the strong currents in Greece, the meltemi is not to be taken lightly. In fact, on very windy days you may see a red flag on certain beaches. This means that swimming is not allowed, as it can get dangerous.

In all seriousness, you may get swept away on a windy day. It can happen to anyone, and it is scary. In case you were wondering, yes, it’s happened to me, and I’m a fairly competent swimmer!

This is not meant to discourage you though. You just need to use your common sense, and respect nature. You can go sightseeing or hiking instead, and spend some extra time in a local taverna. I assure you that it will be time well spent!

Families with small children could consider booking a hotel with a pool. I don’t like pools myself, but I have to admit they can be more relaxing than the beach on a windy day.

Sailing and the meltemi winds

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the meltemi winds can affect sailing trips in Greece. If you have booked a summer sailing cruise around the Aegean, the company may warn you that the itinerary is subject to weather conditions.

This is not because they are lazy to take you to the Cyclades. It’s because they want you to have a safe, enjoyable experience on board.

People planning to rent a boat or yacht should keep an eye on weather conditions on an hourly basis. This is even more so if you are not familiar with the area and the speed that the winds can reach.

Meltemi winds can pick up incredibly fast, and they appear seemingly out of nowhere. You don’t want to be caught unprepared.  Your safety is far more important than reaching a windy island.

Moreover, sailing in strong winds is not a pleasant experience by anyone’s standards…

In extreme cases, some of the high-speed ferries, hydrofoils and other small boats may not depart from the ports. Even the bigger Greek ferries can be delayed – we were stuck in Andros port for over an hour, while our ferry was trying to dock.

Many visitors take a ferry to Piraeus, and fly back home from the Athens airport. In this case, you should consider spending at least one night in Athens before you fly out. This way, in case of a ferry cancellation, you will still have enough time to get to Athens in time for your flight.

Windsurfing and the meltemi winds

If you are visiting Greece to go windsurfing or kitesurfing, the meltemi can be your friend. There are several beaches in Greece that are ideal for these sports. In fact, windsurfing is a fairly big thing over here.

Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Mykonos, Tinos, Andros, Ios, Milos, Kimolos, Rhodes, Karpathos, Crete and Evia are just a few of the Aegean islands where you can go windsurfing. Your instructor will explain what to be aware of, and you should follow their advice. Again, keep an eye on the weather, and do not compromise your safety.

We went kayaking in Mykonos in June, just before the start of the Meltemi, and were blessed with calm waters. Same when we went kayaking in Rhodes in late April. Something to keep in mind for when planning water sport activities!

The first mountain I climbed is the highest peak in Spain and one of the largest volcanoes in the world – Teide. She was the first, because in the Tatras I went up by cable car and even on Gaizinkalns, I am ashamed to admit, I was not.

Teide National Park is a popular tourist destination in the Canary Islands. By the way, several famous films were filmed here, including scenes from Star Wars. Climbing to the very top is theoretically not so difficult, because it can also be done by funicular. True, there is one “but”: to get to the top, you need to get a special permit, which is issued only to 200 people a day. This is the daily limit of tourists on the mountain for safety reasons. As a result, permission can be expected for months. nine0003

However, no one prevents you from climbing the mountain at night, this is also quite legal. At the tourist center, we were told that this option is most often chosen by local residents. If you reach the top by eight o’clock in the morning, you can meet the sunrise.

What you need to know before climbing

It’s no surprise that fantastic movies are often made in the Teide National Park. It really looks like the moon or some other planet. During our eight-hour ascent, the only living creatures other than humans were a frightened mouse and one spider. nine0003

Five people agreed to climb, including me. We started the day by meeting in the hotel lobby at two in the morning. Closer to three, we began our journey to the top of the volcano and around half past nine in the morning we met the dawn at an altitude of 3715 meters above sea level, where we drank our main drink – the local cactus liquor.

Summer weather in October? There are no problems with these warm destinations.

For many, summer is the most beautiful time of the year, but in Russia, rainy weather begins already in September. If you’re looking for warm, sunny alternatives, we’ve got the best destinations for October.

1. Tenerife

The Canary Islands, especially Tenerife, are undoubtedly one of the best places to visit this month. After all, even in October, numerous tourists still come to sunbathe on the largest of the Canary Islands. A few rainy days a year can be used to explore the island on your own in a rental car, or go on boat trips, during which you can meet whales and dolphins. nine0003

2. Bali

Those who have time for a longer flight in autumn should definitely consider Bali. October is the warmest month of the year, and the temperature on the Indonesian island often rises to 30 degrees. But those who travel to Bali should not only swim and sunbathe on the beach, but also visit various temple complexes, some of which are even included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

3. Egypt

If you want more hot summer days, Egypt is the place to be. Here you can lie lazily in the sun, or actively spend the day. Every vacationer should at least once ride a quad bike in the desert, or dive near coral reefs. Extremely low prices make Egypt one of the most popular tourist destinations in October.

4. Malta

In October, Malta attracts tourists with an air temperature of 25°C and a water temperature of 23°C. Going on excursions to many historical sites, such as various megalithic temples, is especially recommended during the season. These structures were created thousands of years ago and are among the oldest free-standing buildings in the world. By the way, sea lovers should definitely take a ferry to Comino, a small island between Gozo and Malta, and enjoy the bright blue water there. nine0003

It is worth noting that Valletta and the southeastern part of Malta are much quieter than the northern part of the island.

5. Madeira

Madeira is known far beyond Portugal as the “island of flowers”. The best way to explore the diverse vegetation as well as exotic flora and fauna is by hiking. The pleasant temperature, averaging 21 degrees, ensures you don’t sweat too much. Due to the volcanic nature of the island, you will have to climb the mountains, but as a reward for your efforts, you will enjoy a far-reaching view of the island. nine0003

6. Lanzarote

If you are planning a cheap holiday in October, you should definitely include the Canary Island of Lanzarote in your list of possible tourist destinations. Nine hours of sunshine in October and temperatures of up to 30 degrees will allow you to spend your vacation days in the open air from morning to evening. Due to the wind that blows over the island from the Sahara, the climate does not seem oppressive, so you can make various daily excursions. For example, in the Timanfaya National Park, you can observe the volcanic activity of the island. nine0003

7. Tunisia

Tunisia, with a temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius and a pleasant water temperature of 24 degrees, is the ideal place to relax in October. Among the most popular swimming areas are the extensive beaches around Sousse, Hammamet and Djerba. But the impressive architecture of the old cities, as well as the culture of the country, which goes far into the past, will amaze many vacationers.

8. Seychelles

Since October is one of the island nation’s wettest and windiest months, the Seychelles cannot be excluded from this list. While the air temperature rises to 30 degrees, the water temperature of about 24 degrees provides coolness. Mahe has over 60 dream beaches with fine sand and turquoise blue seas. Here you can watch giant tortoises and eat freshly picked tropical fruits. nine0003

9. Cyprus

At a temperature of 27 degrees in Cyprus, you can spend an extensive beach holiday even in October. If in the summer months the most famous and beautiful beaches of the island around Ayia Napa are crowded, then in the fall it is quiet and calm.

10. Dubai

While the Emirates don’t skimp on superb luxury, you can travel to Dubai for relatively reasonable prices, especially during the off-season. Thanks to the water temperature of up to 30 degrees, even cold-sensitive vacationers turn into water rats. Those who don’t want to come to Dubai just for swimming will also find luxury shopping, quirky architecture and exciting amusement parks here. nine0003

One of Iceland’s most stunning and unusual waterfalls lies in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajokull National Park. The word Svartifoss means “black waterfall” in Icelandic, and looking at this particular cascade, one of its distinguishing features is the dark hexagonal basalt columns on either side of the trough. nine0003

2003 – October

The average air temperature of the Northern Hemisphere was 18.1° – this is a new absolute maximum of the average monthly temperature in October since 1891. For the fourth month in a row, i.e. since July, the average monthly temperature reaches the value of the absolute maximum. The average temperature in January-October 2003 — the second in the ranked row, yielding only to the similar value for 2002.

Russia
The average temperature is about 2° above normal. October 2003 in the top ten warmest since 1891g

Russia. European territory
Except for the western regions, it was quite warm everywhere. In the north of the territory, the average temperature exceeded the norm by 2° and more (in the Komi Republic — by 4°). Approximately the same anomalies were in the Volga region and in the North Caucasus. A lot of precipitation fell almost everywhere: more than two norms in the Murmansk region, in the north-west of the territory, in the Kuban and the Lower Volga.

Russia. Ural
Warm month. Almost everywhere the average monthly temperature is above the norm by 2-3°, and in the Perm region. — by 4°. In the Urals this year, only in July it was colder than usual, and in the rest of the year, warm weather clearly prevailed over cold. As a result, the average temperature of ten months is the second in the ranked series, second only to 1995g.

Russia. Siberia
A large center of positive anomalies formed in the north of Western Siberia, and October turned out to be very warm. The weather was mostly dry, with the exception of Transbaikalia and the adjacent regions, where the amount of precipitation for the month exceeded the norm by 1.5-2.0 times.

Russia. Far East
In the northern regions, the month was significantly anomalous and entered the top five warmest months over the past 100 years. In a number of regions, the anomalies of the average monthly temperature amounted to 4-5°. It was also warm in the south, but not so noticeable: anomalies in the Amur region, on Sakhalin and in Primorye – 1-1.5°. Precipitation exceeded the norm on the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk and in the Khabarovsk Territory, and in the rest of the territory – about the norm.

Western Europe
Very cold month. Almost throughout the territory, except for Greece and southern Italy, cold air prevailed for most of the month. In Bavaria, the thermometer dropped below -10°, and it was the coldest October in southern Germany since 1936, and according to the Institute of Meteorology of Finland, such a cold October has only been observed in this country for the fifth time in the last 100 years. In Germany, Sweden, Austria, and Belgium, the average monthly temperature anomalies ranged from -2° to -4°. In general, for Europe, last October rounded out the top six of the coldest over the past 100 years.
A lot of precipitation fell on the Iberian Peninsula – 3-4 norms. In the Alps at the beginning of the month there were heavy snowfalls, snow also fell in Germany and Finland. Heavy snowfall hit Turkey. It was so strong that during the day snowdrifts were up to half a meter high. Heavy rains took place in the Balkans, Greece and Eastern Europe. Here, in places, from 2 to 3.5 norms of precipitation fell in a month.

Central Asia and Kazakhstan
Abnormally warm month. In the western regions of Kazakhstan, in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the average monthly air temperature is 2.5-3.5° above the norm. With the exception of Kyrgyzstan and the Caspian territories, it was dry.

Near and Middle East
Abnormally hot weather. In the north of Arabia, in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the average monthly temperature exceeded the norm by 2-3°. There were practically no precipitations.

China, Vietnam and Malaysia
A lot of precipitation fell in the east of China: in Beijing – 3.5 monthly norms. In the valleys of the Huang He and Wai He rivers, it has been raining almost continuously for the second month, which caused severe flooding – 25,000 hectares of land were flooded, 238,000 people had to be evacuated. In Malaysia and southern Vietnam, heavy rains and floods have destroyed tens of thousands of homes, washed away thousands of hectares of crops, and there are casualties.

North Africa
Extreme heat in the middle of the Sahara. The average monthly temperature in almost the entire territory is above the norm by 2-5°C. As a result, in the ranked series of average monthly October temperatures over the past 100 years, the past month ranks fourth.
In the middle of the month, thunderstorms hit the north of Algeria, dozens of people were carried away by the seething streams of water and died. The month was unusually rainy in Senegal (2-5 norms of precipitation per month) and in the north of the Gulf of Guinea (2-3 norms). The rains on the Canary Islands were not conducive to rest. Here, 2-3 norms of precipitation fell in a month.

Canada
The entire territory of Canada was under the influence of a huge center of very large positive temperature anomalies. In the north-west of the country, their values reached – 4-6 °. Only once since the beginning of the 20th century, namely in 1995, October was warmer here. Precipitation was mostly normal or slightly more.

United States of America
Only in the east of the country the month was cold (anomaly -1.4° in Washington), and the rest of the territory was warm, especially in the west, where the anomalies were 2-4°. Such a warm October in the United States happens about once every 10 years.
In the states of Washington and British Columbia, there were heavy rains that caused floods. October 21, 2003 in Seattle turned out to be the “wettest” in the history of this city since 1891. – 128 mm of precipitation fell per day. It also rained along the Atlantic coast, and rainfall here for the month was about the norm, and in some places even more. A severe drought continues in the west of the country, causing unprecedented wildfires in California.
In Alaska, as in Canada, it was the warmest October since 1900 except on 1995g. The average temperature of the first ten months of 2003 in Alaska is the highest.

Mexico
Since the beginning of the month, the country has been hit by tropical storms and hurricanes from the Pacific Ocean.
Hurricane Nora appeared here on October 1st, Hurricane Olaf on October 3rd, and then Tropical Storm Laney. The downpours caused severe flooding. In many regions, the monthly precipitation norms are exceeded by 2-4 times.

Oceans
In the Atlantic Ocean, for the fourth month in a row, the average monthly temperature of the ocean surface reaches an absolute maximum value. Moreover, in October the previous maximum was immediately exceeded by 0.3°, and the ocean surface temperature in the Northern Hemisphere turned out to be 1.0° above the norm. At the same time, for the first time since October last year, the temperature in the north of the ocean did not reach an absolute maximum. Thus ended the 12-month period (X.2002-IX.2003) of extremely high temperatures in this part of the ocean. Subtropical, tropical and equatorial latitudes made the greatest contribution to achieving the absolute maximum of the mean monthly water temperature on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, where the highest temperatures were observed for the first time in about 50 years.
