Best Time to Visit Majorca With Kids • Family Travel Tips

It’s the biggest of the Balearic Islands and is often a family favourite… but when is the best time of year to visit Majorca with kids to gain the most from your trip? The beautiful scenery set alongside a stretching coastline and huge, very popular resorts means that Majorca is brimming with fun and activities for all of the family. Whether you are looking for the hottest time or the cheapest time to go to Majorca, read on to find out when is the best time what activities are open for you and your family.

Porta Pollensa

Best Time to Visit Majorca for Good Weather

If you are looking for the hottest time of the year to visit Majorca, then average temperatures peak at 30 degrees in August – the height of the UK school holidays.

However, the temperature starts to rise from May with a maximum of 24 degrees and drop again in October to 24 degrees so the summer months will provide you with that much desired warmth but the half term shoulder months should give you some sunshine too.

May, June and October have the possibility of being a little cooler with minimum temperatures dropping to 14 degrees at times but this could make for cooler and more comfortable nights if you are travelling with smaller children. Just pack for cooler evenings.

The likelihood of it raining during your trip to Majorca is dependent on the time of year that you travel. Between September and April, you are more likely to experience some rainfall, with the heaviest rain falling in November and December.

The Summer months from May through to the end of August, beginning of September see very little rain and even if there happens to be a downpour whilst you are there, these are often short and can sometimes help to cool you down from those high Summer temperatures! Thunderstorms are meant to be a spectacular sight if you do experience one in Majorca so try to enjoy it!

Best Time to Complete Tours and Activities in Majorca

If you’d love to marvel at the natural beauty of dolphins or whales in the wild on a glass bottom boat, then the Summer months are your best choice. The water will be calm and clear for the best views and you can enjoy sunbathing on the boat during the journey. The start or end of Summer could be best if you are completing this activity with children however as the weather will be a little cooler and there will be more of a sea breeze.

The same can be said for a visit to the Cave of Hams with impressive views and the option of a picnic on some tours. This activity is not available between the 25th of December and the 1st of January however.

Several cruises are also available to explore the coast of Majorca and the same advice applies for those tours. Do remember that the sea breeze can mask warmer weather when out at sea so it is imperative to stay hydrated and use sun cream liberally.

If you haven’t got your sea legs, then the hop on and off bus tours can be a great way to visit Majorca. This is the perfect activity year round but be prepared with an umbrella and raincoat if you are travelling in the Winter months! Skip the line tickets are available for many big attractions including Palma Cathedral.

Best Time to Visit Majorca in the School Holidays

If you’re looking for a hot Summer holiday then July and August are the best times to visit Mallorca during the school holidays. It will be quite warm with maximum temperatures reaching 30 degrees and this could always increase.

A holiday at the end of August or during June half term could be a little cooler and June dates are a slightly cheaper time.

However, if you are looking for a cheaper time to travel to Majorca, October half term would be perfect with highs of 23 degrees but you will need an extra jumper for the evenings and must be aware that some places and restaurants may not be available towards the end of the week due to it being out of season.

Best Time to Visit Majorca with a Baby or Toddler

The ideal time to visit Mallorca with a baby or toddler would be in either May or September, outside of the peak Summer months when the weather is still warm but not too hot. The island is packed with activities for all of the family and restaurants and shops are well equipped with everything you should need for your little one whilst you are there.

Best Time to Visit the Water Parks in Majorca

Aqualand

Aqualand is open from May to October, every day between 10am and 5pm (6pm in July and August). The attractions are open at different times throughout the day and can be closed due to maintenance so check their website for any up to date details.

During peak months of July and August the park is often busier whereas you will find yourself queuing less during June and September. Visitors also suggest arriving early to beat the queues for the most popular attractions.

The park accommodates for toddlers with a ‘Children’s Paradise’ which is designed for smaller children with slides and is monitored by a lifeguard. Teens will also find enough to do with a variety of attractions for the more apprehensive or the adrenaline junkies of the family!

Western Water Park

At Western Water Park, the season starts in May and ends at the end of September but check the website for the last day entry. It is open between 10am and 5pm (6pm during July and August) and tickets can be bought online or at the gate.

The park can be VERY busy during the Summer holidays so it could be best to visit in early July or September. However, Fast Passes are available to cut the length of queues for specific attractions. More information about this can be found on the website or at information desks at the Park.

The Park is designed for the whole family with specific areas for smaller children and larger attractions for those dare-devil teens! Toddlers will need supervision throughout their time and the activities may be a little too large for some but there are pool areas for playtime too.

Hidropark

The Hidropark, Alcudia is open from May 1st to October 30th inclusively with opening times from 10am to 5am and 6pm during July and August. As per the other parks, Hidropark can be very busy during peak months of July and August but arriving early could avoid this or visiting during the low season of May, June, September and October would mean there would be fewer crowds.

At the Hidropark in May

There are a wide range of attractions at this park which are not limited to water slides. Younger children and toddlers are well catered for but teens who might like to challenge their fear factor may not have as much to do. Saying that, there are rides suitable for the whole family individually or together so this would still make for a great day out for everyone.

Best Beaches to Visit in Majorca

What’s a summer holiday without a visit to the beach? Majorca has some fantastic beaches on offer (262 to be exact!) and here are the best of the bunch!

Puerto Pollensa

This beach is a fine sand beach which has two parts to it, nestled in amongst a harbour. The water here is clear and shallow, rarely showing big waves, making it perfect for families but it can get busy in July and August.

The beach is well-equipped with sun loungers, showers and toilets and the accessibility of the harbour means the chance for water sports and excursions by boat. There is a car free promenade laden with cafes and restaurants and lots of hotels nearby.

Playa de Formentor

This white-sand, Blue Flag beach is on the North-eastern tip of the island, surrounded by dense pine forests with views of the Traumuntana mountains. This can often offer some shade on those warm days in the Summer. Due to the scenic attraction of this long, skinny white beach, it can be busy with tourists at times.

The beach does offer loungers and umbrellas at set prices across the beach and these can be quite high during the peak Summer months. The water is shallow with low waves and with the added bonus of showers and toilets, it makes it perfect for children.

You can hire some basic water sport equipment but it isn’t too noisy or busy meaning there is lots of space for swimming and snorkelling. There are two restaurants and two souvenir shops nearby too so not a huge selection but they both offer self-service and a good selection of food.

Camp de Mar

Camp de Mar is a far sized beached, and although over-looked by some hotels, the sea views are impressive. It’s a great spot for families with shallow water, low waves and showers and toilets readily accessible.

You can hire sunbeds, umbrellas and pedalos to keep those little ones busy and there are lifeguards on duty which will definitely be needed as the beach can get crowded during the busy Summer months. There are restaurants nearby, including one positioned on an island in the sea which is accessed by a wooden bridge.

Port de Soller

These beaches provide some of the best views in Majorca as they are split into two separate parts along the horseshoe bay. The sea is calm and sheltered with low waves with lifeguards on duty making this a perfect beach for families.

You can hire sunbeds and umbrellas and the promenade offers lots in terms of cafes and restaurants. The option of a ride on a vintage tram is available and you will even get a view of some impressive private yachts which often choose Port de Soller to anchor!

Playa de Muro

This is one of the longest beaches on the Balearic Islands which has four different sectors. The water is calm and shallow and there is a surplus of cafes, restaurants, showers and toilets making it perfect for families!

The lifeguards on duty give you that extra peace of mind too. As the sectors progress away from the facilities, the views become more impressive and the beaches are more unspoilt. There is parking at both ends of Playa de Muro which is ideal if you’ve hired a car to load with all of the unforgettables for a family visit to the beach.

With water sports available here, it makes it a perfect beach for all and everyone, with the option of scuba diving offered for those dare devils!

Mallorca Holidays in October

October in Mallorca for local people is fast approaching Autumn time. The beaches are quiet, and whilst most of Europe is back at work or school, there are still tourists to be found in Mallorca. They are taking advantage of the bright days and mild temperatures.

There are many events at this time of year, but they are not the large scale fiestas of summer.

The Alcudia fair in October

The Fira D, Alcudia is celebrated in the old town of Alcudia on the first weekend of October. This Fair has an agricultural and commercial theme. Many local businesses take this opportunity to display their products. Government agencies also take part and display.

For those of us who enjoy our food, there are many gastronomic demonstrations from local restaurants. You can find many expositions of local delicacies. One of our favorites is the local dessert of ensaimada. Legend has it that the Moorish invaders introduced the sweetbread to Mallorca, as it is shaped like a turban. Another explanation is that one was presented to the catalán King Jaume 1st after his conquest of the island in 1229.

There are many variations of this typical Mallorcan dessert. Some of our favorites include fillings of white chocolate and walnuts and on a savory note. You could also try a filling of the spicy sausage of sobresadda.

La Fira de Miel, Llubi

The month of October brings the annual honey fair in the village of Llubi, in the Es Raiguer zone of Mallorca. This little anthropod takes center stage for a unique celebration of the many types of honey. It is derived from a long summer of hard work, thanks to the local bees of this pretty Mallorcan village.

Llubi has a long history of market gardening and its fertile soils have another crop that is well worth the journey to this little known Mallorcan village. The hardy caper plant is a mainstay of the Mallorcan housewife. Village of llubi has the unique conditions for the cultivation of this tasty Mediterranean bud. Capers are an essential ingredient in many Mallorcan dishes, the main one that springs to mind is Pa am boli.

What to See and Do in Mallorca in October

There is plenty to see and do in Mallorca during the month of October. All the tourist attractions are open, but we still recommend booking in advance. In October the island is in slowdown mode, but there is still plenty of tourist activity.

Mallorca with children in October

A common question is what is there to do with our children in the month of October? We are parents ourselves, so we understand the dilemma. At this time of year the older kids are back at school and there are many parents with preschool kids. Normally they are taking advantage of the value for money prices and end of summer sunshine. Not so high temperatures give more option to discover the island with the little ones.

Let’s go feed the animals

One of our firm favorites in the north of the island is rancho ses Roques. This is a family-run horse ranch and welcomes riders of all abilities. Of course, there is no way that you can bring a toddler on a horse. The idea is if mum likes to horse ride, there is a great mini-farm with all kinds of little animals for the kids to feed. Simply ask for a bag of barley at the bar and you can have a morning or afternoon of fun. The ranch is located at the end of the Pere mas y Reus Street in the Port of Alcudia.

For bigger kids we can recommend the amazing activity of pony riding. Something really cool, what they will remember from Mallorca. Especially if they try the horse riding for the first time. We encourage you to encourage your kids to try something new!

Let’s go for a bike ride

Mallorca is renowned for its popularity in the cycling world. The excellent road network and smooth surfaces make it perfect for the avid pedaller. When there are families involved it steps down a couple of gears. Mostly for the obvious reason that it is always better not to go too far from base with children.

The north of Mallorca is perfect for short cycling excursions with your family. There are many bicycle hire companies and all have options to rent bikes with child seats or kids bike trailers.

The main thorough fares can be avoided by taking the many side roads and quieter streets. We recommend the area of a small sandy cove such as the playa de St. Pere. It is located on the outskirts of Alcudia’s old town. Great chillout place, where you can spend a few hours before saddling up for the return journey.

Spotlight on Palma – The capital of the Balearics

Discover the gems of Palma

Mallorca’s awe-inspiring capital is a city steeped in history, culture and gastronomy to die for. Cathedral La Seu, the Almudaina Palace, and the Plaza Mayor are sites that are top of most visitors lists. The city of Palma has been inhabited by the Romans, Moors, and Berber pirates. King Jaume I who put an end to the Moorish reign in the Mediterranean island during the 13th century, was responsible for building some of the city’s most iconic constructions in Palma.

Old quarter is enclosed by 18th-century walls which were erected to repel pirates and corsairs. Travellers can discover many old churches, palaces and mansions with charming courtyards – there are over 40 dotted around the center of Palma.

If you would like to know more about history of Mallorca, we recommend our article below:

The most important historical facts about Mallorca

Mallorca has very eventful history, since prehistoric times through Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, Medieval Kings conquests… In this article we focus on moments with high historical significance, which have brought the island to its present cultural shape.

Can Joan de S’Aigo

Founded in 1700, one of Palma’s oldest and most famous establishments, Can Joan de S’Aigo, is much more than just a chocolate shop. The city’s oldest café, it is also highly regarded for its cocas (local pastries). And, one of its many other claims to fame is that it is reputed to have been the first ice-cream making parlor in Mallorca. The ‘S’ago’ of the name means water.

When founded more than 300 years ago, its main business was the sale of freshwater and ice sourced from the Tramuntana Mountains. The ice was merely snow which was stored in pits inside snow houses made from dry stone. And it provided the means for Mallorca’s first ice-cream – almond milk mixed with ice. So good was it, that local doctors recommended its consumption for medicinal purposes. The ice acted as a natural painkiller, and the almonds provided energy. Almond ice-cream continues to be among the most popular flavors in Mallorca.

Visit La Lonja in Palma

As Palma’s port grew in importance in the late Middle Ages, there was the need for a proper market and trading house for merchants. La Lonja (Sa Llotja) met this need. Built between 1420 and 1452, its Gothic style drew on details of church design which inspired its Felanitx-born architect, Guillem Sagrera. He is remembered by the road that passes by La Lonja – the Passeig (or Paseo) Sagrera.  Over the entrance to this grand building is a sculpture of the Guardian Angel, the original patron of Palma. There are many other artistic works close by, such as the statue of Ramon Llull.

Palma Town Hall and square

Palma Town Hall is more commonly referred to as ‘Cort’. In the Plaça Cort, in front of the town hall building, was once the offices and tribunals of various authorities with interests in Mallorca. These offices were ‘corts’. The square assumed a prominent position in Palma’s life during the Muslim era. It was enclosed by walls and, by the time of the 1229 conquest, it was the administrative, commercial, judicial and religious hub of the city.

The first government of the new Kingdom of Mallorca was established at the Hospital de Sant Andreu, which is now the town hall library. In 1343, the hospital and the adjoining building – which had been for the Order of Saint George – became the location for the kingdom’s ‘jurist’, the medieval equivalent to today’s councilors. City´s town hall itself was known as the ‘Universitat’, a title it kept until the early eighteenth century when ‘Ayuntamiento’ (Ajuntament in Catalan) was adopted. The square ceased to be enclosed in 1921, the removal of the walls part of a process that had been ongoing for several years to open up the city and to introduce more light.

Famous in Mallorca: Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria

With all the turmoil in the world these days it is worth noting that Mallorca in October has much to offer the curious visitor at the quieter times of the year. Spain and Mallorca have been pioneers in tourism in the late twentieth century and right up to the present day. If we step back in time we can discover that the origins of tourism in this región came from the curiosity of visitors at the beginning of the last century and even the previous one.

Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria in Mallorca

One of Mallorca’s most famous visitors was the archduke Luis Salvador, born the 4th august 1847-12th October 1915. The archduke was maybe Mallorca’s greatest advocate, penning the 9 volume work Die Balearen. A study of all things on Mallorca from flora and fauna to the minute details of Mallorcan customs and life..

The archduke first visited Mallorca as the count of Neuendorf in 1867. And here began a love affair with all aspects of Mallorca, nature, its people, the crashing of the waves at his Tramuntana residence. You could say he was the inspiration for the millions of tourists to follow.

The archduke spent over 40 years of his life on the island of Mallorca and exploring the Mediterranean on his steam yachts Nixe and Nixe 2.

A visit to the Archduke’s residence and now the museum of Son Marroig can be enjoyed by appointment. You can experience the spectacular vistas and walk in the shoes of the illustrious son of Mallorca.

  • Kos, Greece

Average temperature in October: 25ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

October in the Mediterranean is a month of transition: there is usually a big drop in temperatures from the beginning of the month to the end. To be sure of hot weather, head south. The Greek island of Kos has a long season, and this is a great time of year to pick up a bargain. If you want an upmarket all-inclusive hotel, the IKOS Aria is an excellent choice.

Also consider: Crete, the most southerly of the Greek islands. For an inspired selection of small hotels and guest houses in beautiful locations, I recommend i-escape. See more holiday ideas in Greece and our guide to the hottest Greek islands in October.

  • Seville, Spain

Average temperature in October: 27ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8
Flying time from UK: 2 hours 45 mins

The elegant cities of Seville and Granada lie in the “frying pan” of Andalucia, with summer temperatures frequently topping 40ºC. October is a far better time to visit. You could spend a few days visiting palaces and eating tapas al fresco, then maybe head to the wild unspoilt beaches of the Costa de le Luz.

Also consider: a few days in sophisticated Palma in Mallorca, or Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. For more ideas, see the best city breaks in October and where’s hot in Spain in October.

  • The Azores

Average temperature in October: 23ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

The volcanic islands of the Azores boast superb beaches and are among the best places in Europe for whale and dolphin watching..There are direct flights from the UK to these Portuguese islands and the weather is ideal for walking or cycling.

Also consider: the beaches of the Algarve and the beautiful unspoilt Alentejo region, both of which enjoy excellent weather in October. You can explore them both on a fly-drive holiday, staying in historic pousada hotels. Prices from £495 including flights.

  • Montenegro

Average temperature in September: 20ºC

Tiny Montenegro is packed with character, history and natural beauty. Not blessed with sandy beaches, it comes into its own in late season when you can hire a car and explore baroque villages and mountain roads, staying in charming boutique hotels .

Also consider: the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik in neighbouring Croatia, or the second city of Split and the islands around it. See more holiday ideas in Croatia.

  • Corsica, France

Average temperature in October: 22ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8
Flying time from UK: 2 hours 10 mins

I love the French island of Corsica for its white-sand beaches, rugged mountains and great food. You’ll find a range of apartments and villas with private pools and you can often benefit from special offers this late in the season.

If you want a short flight, hot weather and near guaranteed sunshine, Morocco is a winner. Marrakech offers dry desert sunshine, perfect for sightseeing and shopping as well as sunbathing, and you can stay in a palatial riad. It’s a good time of year to explore – head to the beaches of Essaouira, take a desert tour and cool off in the beautiful, tranquil Atlas Mountains.

Also consider: the riches of ancient Egypt. In Cairo you can expect highs of 29°C, falling at night to 18°C. Flying time from the UK is five hours. It’s also a great time of year to visit Istanbul – not too hot for sightseeing.

  • The Gambia

Average temperature in October: 32ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 8
Flying time from UK: 6 hours

The Gambia is just a six-hour direct flight from London or Manchester and makes for one of the best-value beach holidays in October. This small West African country has friendly English-speaking people and a good range of accommodation including my personal favourite, the Kombo Beach. See the latest special offers.

Also consider: Jordan (25°C) for sightseeing and desert adventures. If you’ve never visited the rock-carved city of Petra, this is a great month to experience it, but there’s so much more to see including Jerash, the Dead Sea and the desert scapes of Wadi Rum. Check out this Splendours of Jordan 8-day tour.

  • Dubai, UAE

Hours of daily sunshine: 10

In the Arabian Gulf, hot weather in October is as good as guaranteed. There are four main options: Dubai, Oman, Abu Dhabi and – the new kid on the block – Qatar. Dubai is firmly established for its iconic hotels including the Burj Al Arab, exciting restaurant scene and Atlantis the Palm, home to the Aquaventure Waterpark. Abu Dhabi is catching up fast with stunning hotels, glamorous shopping malls and Yas Island, home to Waterworld, a Formula 1 track and the world’s fastest roller coaster. • Kalkan, Turkey

Average temperature in October: 25ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9
Flying time from UK: 4 hours (to Dalaman)

Turkey is a good option, and it’s cheap because the Lira has fallen sharply against Sterling. Temperatures on the Aegean Coast stay comfortably in the mid-20s. If you want a classy quiet resort with lovely local restaurants head to Kalkan or Fethiye.

Also consider: a gulet cruise along the dazzling Turquoise Coast. See more holiday ideas in Turkey and the hottest places in Turkey in October.

Long haul ideas in October

October is a good time to visit Mauritius. The island is home to many world-class luxury hotels, and the climate is perfect: temperatures of around 27°C with eight hours of daily sun.

October is generally a good time to visit Africa, particularly if you’re looking to combine safari and beach. Kenya is the classic destination where you can start with the Big Five in the Masai Mara followed by a lazy few days on the Indian Ocean coast, perhaps at Hemingways Watamu. Coastal temperatures typically reach 30°C.

How about a self-drive adventure in the USA. It’s the perfect time to see the autumn colours in New England, or you could embark on an epic road trip such as Route 66, or travelling the coastline of California.

If you prefer to stay in one place, we recommend Scottsdale, Arizona, a sophisticated resort set in the vast Sonora desert. Temperatures reach 35ºC in October but it’s a dry desert heat, so perfect for scenic hikes, e-biking and perhaps a round of golf at one of the many local courses. This 8-night Spectacular Scottsdale trip includes day trips to the Grand Canyon, the red rocks of Sedona and the OK Corral.

The dry season is starting in the Maldives, where you can expect temperatures of 29°C and seven hours of sunshine. See more weather info. If you love nature, but also crave some pampering, take a look at Madagascar which has fabulous beaches and unique nature experiences.

October is also an excellent time of year to visit Sri Lanka. It’s just coming up to the high season but still at low season prices. Rather than choose between a beach holiday and a tour, you can combine the two: spend a week visiting Buddhist temples, sacred rocks, national parks and the elephant orphanage, then unwind with a few days on the coast. There are some great boutique hotels and eco resorts,

First-time visitors to India should head for the Golden Triangle in the royal state of Rajasthan – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur – temperatures are high at around 33°C but it’s a dry desert heat, so it’s not humid. For something slower-paced, try this Treasures of Southern India tour in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. See a selection of private tours in India (with chauffeur and English-speaking guide) and small group tours.

This is also a good time to be in Vietnam – a great destination if you love modern history, ancient culture, street food, shopping and luxury hotels. These suggested itineraries will give you some inspiration.

For a good value beach holiday with guaranteed hot weather, it’s hard to top Mexico, particularly if you stay in one of these all-inclusive hotels. Cancun is great for nightlife, water parks and activities. We recommend the five-star Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa.

October is the dry season in Botswana, making it a prime time for big game spotting – the lack of rain means that animals gather around watering holes, guaranteeing spectacular sightings. The Chobe and Khwai River region has the highest concentration of elephants and lions in Africa.

It’s spring time in South Africa where Cape Town is a very pleasant 22°C. In the east, Johannesburg and Durban are in the high 20s. This is a wonderful time of year to visit Kruger National Park. We recommend this classic Cape Town, Winelands and Kruger safari adventure.

In Brazil, it’s an ideal time of year to visit Rio de Janeiro, and you can easily combine it with trips to the beach and the falls at Iguassu. For holidays in Brazil, we recommend Dehouche.

The Caribbean in October

October marks the tail end of the Caribbean hurricane season, but this can still be an excellent time to visit, and good value. Also, many islands lie south of the hurricane belt including Barbados, St Lucia  and the Dutch island of Curaçao. See the Caribbean weather in October.

About

While October marks the end of the summer season in Mallorca, the island certainly doesn’t shut down. On the contrary, October is a popular month for people to visit.

Most of the seasonal hotels remain open until the beginning of November and offer some good rates in October and, with the average temperature reaching the mid-20s, there’s still enough sun to be soaking up those rays on the beach during the day – just remember to take a jacket out with you in the evenings!

While the beach clubs begin to wrap up, cultural activities, local fiestas and sports competitions steal the spotlight. Harvest fairs, food festivals, and sporting events are some of the most popular events taking place this month.

What’s the weather like in Mallorca in October?

October is one of our favourite months of the year in Mallorca! Average temperatures stick around the mid 20’s during the day which is great for outdoor enthusiasts keen to tackle the sporting challenges the island has to offer. Do keep in mind the days are getting noticeably shorter in October, with sunrise creeping up to 08. 15 and sunset before 19.00 and remember the clocks change at the end of the month! In the evenings it does get quite cool so do make sure you pack a jacket. On average, 6 days of the month see rain, but generally you will enjoy pleasant weather.

What’s on in Mallorca in October?

Traditional fiesta’s & fairs
Early autumn is traditionally associated with the harvest all around Europe, and this is no different in Mallorca. Many of the island’s rural towns celebrate with traditional fairs in October where you can expect live folk music, markets, shows and parties. Some last longer than others, such is the case of Llucmajor’s autumn fair which carries on over the course of the month. For arts and crafts, Alaró’s guild fair should be on your radar. Other inland villages will also be hosting their own harvest celebrations.

And, after harvesting, we eat! Food and drink seem to be the main focus in October as Mallorca honours its local produce with dozens of festivals all around the island. Take your pick: llampuga (‘mahi-mahi’ fish) in Cala Ratjada  or llonguets (traditional sandwiches) in Palma every Wednesday throughout the month. Local produce is also celebrated with fairs dedicated to the sobrassada in Campos, sweets at the ‘Fira Dolça’ in Esporles  or red peppers (‘pebre bord’, used to make paprika) in Felanitx.

The town of Inca will host lindy hop fans from all around the continent for a few days filled with swing and swagger. Dance workshops, live music, parties and gastronomic events are all part of the programme.

Palma de Mallorca Marathon
The increasingly popular Palma de Mallorca Marathon brings thousands of runners together for a marathon, a half marathon, a 10km race, a breakfast run, a pasta party and the Palma kid’s run. If you want to come along to support, you can watch them trot along some of Palma’s most iconic monuments, including the cathedral.

Oktoberfest

With so many Germans living and visiting the island, it should come as no surprise that Oktoberfest is also big here. One of the largest events is Palma’s Pueblo Español Oktoberfest celebration where a whole host of nationalities will be coming together to enjoy some authentic German food and beer.

recreation and weather in Mallorca (Spain)

Land that has survived vandal raids, pirate siege and plague pandemic; a place where Christian and Arab cultures harmoniously intertwine; “an open-air museum” and a “paradise in Spain” – all this is about Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic archipelago.

Mallorca has already conquered thousands of tourists, including such famous personalities as Brigitte Bardot, Princess Diana, Winston Churchill and others. It is simply impossible to resist its natural beauties, favorable climate and excellent level of service. That is why foreigners who have visited Mallorca at least once come back here again and again.

The peak of the influx of vacationers falls on the summer months, but in autumn the pastime here does not become less comfortable. Moreover, the golden season has many advantages over the hot season. Kidpassage will tell you about what awaits you in Mallorca in October.

Holidays in Mallorca in October: advantages and disadvantages of the resort

October is already on the calendar, and warm summer still reigns in Mallorca. True, stuffiness and sweltering heat are left behind, which even plays into the hands of tourists. In autumn, holidays on the Spanish island become more pleasant than in the summer months. And this is far from the only reason why it is worth coming here at the end of the high season. Based on reviews of holidays in Mallorca in October, the second month of autumn is a good time for a vacation. And here’s why:

  • the weather is still clear and warm, but the exhausting summer heat is gone;
  • most of the month the Mediterranean Sea pleases with the optimal water temperature for swimming;
  • there are much fewer foreign guests in the resorts of the island than in summer and in September;
  • prices for vacations are decreasing, which pleases vacationers;
  • tourists have the opportunity to visit happy holidays and even celebrate the Day of Spain with the locals;
  • autumn is harvest time, so local markets are bursting with delicious and healthy fruits and vegetables.

The shortcomings of Mallorca in October include capricious and unstable weather. You will never guess at what moment the clear sky will be covered with clouds, whether the evening will be warm or dank. For this reason, it is better to stock up on sweatshirts and sweatshirts with long sleeves.

It is also worth noting that the Mediterranean cools down at the end of the month. Some tourists continue to swim, but for children, the water temperature of +20 ° C may already be cool.

Weather in Mallorca in October

The weather in Mallorca in October-November is warm, but you can clearly feel the fresh breath of autumn in the air. Tourists will not see lingering heavy rains and a leaden sky here, but there are much fewer sunny days.

The weather in early October is perfect for all kinds of recreation. The Mediterranean Sea has not yet cooled down enough to scare away bathers with low temperatures. It is moderately warm outside, during the day tourists feel comfortable in light clothes.

The temperature in Mallorca drops by a few degrees in mid-October, but it doesn’t feel that much colder. Even during this period, vacationers acquire a beautiful tan, and the likelihood of sunburn is minimized.

The weather in Mallorca at the end of October is sometimes unpredictable. In the last weeks of the month, cloudy days are increasingly observed. Because of the sea breezes and the drop in temperature, sometimes you want to put on extra clothes. Some tourists swim in the sea, but most are limited to the “wet their feet” option.

Air and water temperature

Mallorca’s climate is typical Mediterranean. This type is characterized by mild snowless winters and hot sunny summers. Due to the proximity of the island to the equator, it is comfortable to relax here all year round. The high season falls on the summer months, but many come here in the off-season, as well as on New Year’s holidays.

Air temperature in Mallorca in October

During the day, the average temperature in Mallorca in October is +24. 4 °C. At night, the mercury column drops to an average of +18.8 ° C. A few sweatshirts in your suitcase will do the trick. I especially want to warm up in the evenings.

Sea temperature

The Mediterranean Sea starts to cool down in October. The average water temperature is +23.4 °C. It is worth noting that at the beginning of the month, swimming is still fully available, while in the last ten days of October, not every daredevil will decide on long swims.

Rainfall

In October, rains become more frequent, but their amount is still not critical. Vacationers do well without umbrellas. For the whole month, about three rainy days are expected, which bring with them 30 mm of precipitation.

Sunny, cloudy, cloudy days

In mid-autumn, the weather begins to act up, but sunny days prevail over cloudy ones. On average, clear weather lasts for 22 days (70%). Clouds are expected 20% of the time. The remaining 10% is occupied by cloudy days.

Beach holidays

Most of October the Mediterranean Sea remains warm, the water starts to cool down only by the last decade of the month. Vacationers have time to swim, sunbathe, and breathe in plenty of fresh sea air. Mallorca has more than 200 beaches, including both equipped and “wild” areas, there are even places for nudists.

Spacious sandy beaches with well-developed infrastructure await tourists at every resort on the island. Many of the coastal areas have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental friendliness. All Mallorca beaches are municipal, so entry is free. But you will have to pay for the rental of umbrellas and sunbeds.

Calo des Moro

Not far from the municipality of Santanyi is the cozy Calo des Moro beach. There are significantly fewer visitors here than on the beaches of Palma, and in October, tourists can even count on solitude. The sea here is calm, there are almost never big waves, which is suitable for vacationers with children. The beach is considered “wild”, as it is not equipped with changing cabins, toilets, sun loungers and other attributes of a comfortable stay. However, the incredible beauty of the bay fully compensates for the lack of infrastructure.

Cala Mondrago

A small but very picturesque beach located on the territory of the national park of the same name. From all sides, “Cala Mondrago” is surrounded by rocks and pines, so there is almost never a wind here. The beach has sun loungers and parasols, and there is a bar and a restaurant nearby. This place is suitable for family holidays, as the entrance to the water is quite flat and gentle. Be sure to go diving or snorkeling – Cala Mondrago has incredibly clear water, allowing you to see all the beauties of the underwater world.

Cala Formentor

Cape Formentor is not only a popular swimming spot, but also a famous natural attraction. This beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. The territory is narrow, but stretches for 850 m in length, so there is enough free space, especially at the end of the season, when there are not so many vacationers. All the necessary infrastructure is at Cala Formentor. In addition, lifeguards monitor the safety of bathers. There are several places to eat close to the beach.

Sightseeing holiday in Mallorca

What is there in Mallorca! And winding mountain routes, and national parks, and ancient architectural monuments, and olive groves, and … It is difficult to list all the sights of the island in one article and it is simply unrealistic to see in one vacation.

Cathedral

The main cathedral of all the Balearic Islands is located in the capital of Mallorca, Palma. The construction of the Gothic temple lasted more than one century. Antonio Gaudi himself, who worked on the interior, contributed to the construction of this legendary building. Huge windows with stained-glass windows, the ark of the Life-Giving Cross encrusted with jewels, religious shrines, ancient canvases and jewelry – exhibits, Gothic architecture and interior decoration of the cathedral amaze tourists. In addition, organ music concerts are regularly held here.

Dragon Cave

The island has many caves open to the public, but the most famous is the Dragon Cave. The dungeon extends 2,000 meters deep; on the way of tourists there are stalactites and stalagmites, grottoes and underground lakes. One lake is artificially illuminated, you can sail on it by boat. At the end of the path, tourists are also waiting for an illumination that imitates the dawn.

It is still quite warm in early October, but still bring sweaters and jackets. In caves, the air temperature is several degrees lower, it is very easy to freeze.

A visit to the Dragon Cave will be a great adventure. According to legend, pirates and the Knights Templar hid their treasures here. Who knows, maybe you will be able to find the coveted chest with piastres?

  • Cave of the Dragon in Mallorca: author’s description, photos, opening hours

The old town of Valldemosa

The small provincial town of Valldemosa is one of the local sights where you can 100% experience the local flavor. Even an ordinary walk around the city will give a lot of impressions, because in Valldemos there are no modern buildings and newfangled hypermarkets. It seems that time in the town stopped several centuries ago. At the end of October, you can walk along the narrow city streets for a long time, admiring the local authentic architecture.

It was here that the writer George Sand and her husband, the composer Chopin, once stayed. In the Carthusian monastery, where the couple lived, even a mini-museum was created. Other local attractions worth mentioning are Cathedral of Santa Catalina Tomas and Palace of King Sancho .

  • Things to do with children in Mallorca

For visitors with children, Mallorca also has a lot to offer. Top things to visit:

  • aquarium (Palma de Mallorca)
  • Kathmandu Amusement Park (Magaluf)
  • Safari Park (Cala Millo)
  • Rope Park (Santa Ponsa)
  • Marineland Water Park (Palma de Mallorca)

Holidays, events, festivals

The Spaniards are sensitive to their national traditions, so both religious and secular celebrations are celebrated brightly. The islanders love to have fun, in the local calendar every month is full of “red days”. Holidays in Mallorca in October are also in abundance.

On 12 October Spain Day is celebrated all over the country. Many entertainment events are organized on this day. There are concerts and solemn processions. In addition, October 12 in the calendar of religious Spaniards is the feast of the Holy Virgin Pilar .

October is the beer festival, the Spanish equivalent of the German Oktoberfest. Traditionally, the resort of Santa Ponsa becomes the venue for the event. Dates vary from year to year, so check online ahead of time.

There are a lot of festivals, concerts and events on the island: classical music festival is held in Port de Soller, sports marathon is held in Palma, Esporlas is sweet fair , Campos is Spanish sausage fair , in Conseil – wine festival and etc.

October holiday prices

October is the best time to save on travel. The high season is coming to an end, which means that holidays on the Spanish island are getting cheaper. Prices in Mallorca in October are much lower than in summer and during the velvet season.

Price of tours

October is the best month to buy a tour. In mid-autumn, travel agencies reduce the cost of their services by 21% compared to September prices.

The cost of the flight

Sharp price increases are not expected in autumn. Moreover, throughout the season, ticket prices remain virtually unchanged. In October there is a slight rise in price, but the difference is less than 1%.

Accommodation

With each autumn month, accommodation in local hotels falls in price. In October, guests pay 17% less than in September. In the last month of autumn, rooms become cheaper by another 7%. Thus, the average daily price for accommodation in September is 173 euros, in October – 135 euros, and in November – 102 euros.

  • Family Hotels Mallorca

Meals and transfers

Spanish cuisine is one of the best in the world, and it’s not for nothing that national dishes are often found in the best Michelin-starred restaurants. In addition, almost all establishments in Mallorca offer the freshest seafood.

If you want to spend time in style in a restaurant and taste gourmet dishes, then get ready for a check amount of 50-100 euros (the price is indicated per person, excluding the cost of drinks). In a cafe, lunch will cost much less, about 30 euros. Visitors leave the least amount of money in cafes for local residents.

As far as the transport system is concerned, tourists have no problem getting around the island. It is convenient to get from one resort to another by bus. The cost depends on the distance and ranges from 3-10 euros. Two trains run around the capital of the island – a modern and an old excursion. Palma also has a metro. For convenience, you can use the services of taxi drivers who charge 3 euros for landing and 1. 5 euros for each subsequent kilometer.

How to dress in Mallorca

Your suitcase should have something for any weather. It is quite pleasant to walk in light summer clothes in the daytime hours, but with the onset of darkness, when coolness descends on the island, you will have to warm up.

Don’t forget your bathing suits. Even if the water in the Mediterranean Sea seems cool to you, you can always swim in the hotel pools or relax in one of the local water parks.

It is very easy to burn out in October, despite the apparent coolness. Do not neglect sunscreen and hats. This is especially true for those tourists who rest in Mallorca in the first week of the month.

Recommendations for families with children

October is a good time to spend holidays in Mallorca with children. But if you are firmly focused on a beach pastime, then you should come to the island in the first decade of the month.

  • Family holidays in Mallorca: Kidpassage guide

In general, this period can be described as favorable for families: the weather is conducive to long walks, leisurely lounging on the beach and sightseeing. There are a large number of entertainment locations for young travelers, and many hotels are focused on guests with kids. Both teenagers and the smallest tourists will be satisfied with the autumn trip to Spain.

It is impossible to list all the advantages and unique features of the island, but Kidpassage has tried to collect the most entertaining of them in the article “9 interesting facts about Mallorca”.

Mallorca is love at first sight of the turquoise water surface, from the first breath of sea air, from the first sip of real Spanish wine. Treat yourself to an unforgettable experience by traveling to this piece of paradise in Spain.

About the weather in Majorca

October in Majorca, the largest Spanish island in the Mediterranean, is a great time for those who prefer a calm and beautiful holiday. The official beach season ends here in September, although the weather in October can still be quite hot (+24…+28°C, occasionally higher). However, in October, autumn comes into its own – and this means cool mornings, rough seas and rains. But with the same success, Mallorca can please with a warm sea (+ 25-26 ° C) and clear sunny days.

The party season on the island ends after the first week of October, so in the second half of the month the main contingent of tourists are European tourists aged 50 and older. It is also worth considering that many travel agencies stop selling tours to Mallorca in October, and most airlines stop direct flights at the end of September.

But how good is October for excursions in Mallorca! The town of Palma de Mallorca deserves special mention, nestled in a bay that is recognized as one of the most picturesque in the world. Ancient Palma enchants with its narrow medieval streets and squares, houses with traditional patios and small restaurants where it is so pleasant to dine while admiring the unhurried life of the town through the windows. No less beautiful is the town of Soller with its museums, the old Town Hall and the amazing bank building of the 13th century.

But Mallorca’s natural beauties are most striking: the stunning Serra de Tramuntana mountains, incredible expanses of meadows, mysterious caves and fabulous beaches, which are pleasant to visit even in cool weather.

Holidays with children in October can be diversified by going to the Marineland dolphinarium in Costa den Blanes or to the water park Hidropark Alcudia, which is usually open until the end of October (on a reduced schedule).

Well, you can get to know the soul of the island by visiting local holidays and festivals. In October, a classical music festival is held in Port de Soller, in the monastery of Santa Catalina. In Llucmajor, the Harvest Festival is magnificently celebrated, which includes the richest fairs, horse shows, concerts, a parade of giants and chants in the monastery of Sant Bonaventura. In Alcudia, at the beginning of the month, you can visit the Autumn Fair and stare at an amazing spectacle called “Estol del Rei En Jaume” – artists dressed in carnival costumes depict the main people in the history of Mallorca. And, of course, October is the time of the Sa Calobra TT races: the route runs from Ca Calobra to Port de Soller, and at the end of the event everyone will have a party and treats.

Weather in Mallorca by months and seasons

The island appeared to the world on the surface of the sea about 11 million years ago. As it was then, no one can say. Now there is a typical Mediterranean climate. The coastline of 554 km in the north is solid rocks and cliffs. In the area of Alcudia and Pollensa there are large wonderful bays, dearly loved by tourists. But connoisseurs also know the small ones, hidden near rural settlements far from the beaten paths. Families with children flock there. In summer, the cities of the island are overcrowded with tourists, which does not always cause exuberant delight of local residents. They say that in Palma de Mallorca they even banned rental housing. So focus on hotels and the countryside. The island has two long mountain ranges of extraordinary beauty. The highest point is the peak with the funny name Puig Major (1445 m). There are practically no fresh lakes and rivers. In the central part lies the orange-almond plain of Es Pla. Winds in winter and spring blow mainly from the north and southwest. Climate warming with outstanding summer heat has come here too. So take a closer look at the “off-season” seasons.

+1 2°C +9.2°C 9°C), at night +9..10°C. You will have to winter in the sea at +16°C. December 6 and 7 are days off for Constitution Day and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Christmas Eve is called “Noche Buena” and it is customary to spend it in the family circle, so on December 24, pack your own by booking a restaurant in advance. An excellent time to visit the Cathedral of La Seu, which began to be built in 1229, and ended up with interior decoration and exterior lighting by Antonio Gaudí already in the 20th century. Students of architectural universities will like the fact that Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque styles are represented there. Nearby, on the foundations of a Roman fortress, stands the ancient palace of La Almudaina, where the Moorish rulers and viziers lived. Half of the complex is now owned by the visiting royal family, while the National Museum is located in the other half.

Christmas in Mallorca

After enjoying the architecture, you can walk through the royal Parc de la Mar and then climb the wooded hill where stands Bellver, Jaime II’s round castle. At first it was the residence of the king, then a fortress, a military prison, and now it has become the Museum of the history of the city. On the roof there is an observation deck with magnificent views. In January, the colorful festival Festa de l’Estendard takes place in the capital. It is interesting to watch the solemn procession from the city hall to the Cathedral.

January: Day +14°C, night +7. .9°C. The sea cooled down another degree to +15°C. If the Fiesta in honor of San Sebastian, the patron saint of Palma de Mallorca, is not enough for you, head to the urban area of Son Espagnolet. There is a Spanish village where you can see in miniature all the sights of the mainland.

St. Anthony’s Day in Mallorca is a harsh holiday full of fire and monsters on the streets

In January, tourists are especially impressed by the holidays dedicated to St. Anthony, the patron saint of peasants and domestic animals.

February: The sea continues to winter, the water is already +14°C. In the air +13..14°C, but in recent years it has been even higher. The night is as cold as in January. This month, as a rule, falls on the Carnival, the brightest event on the island. In the Es Pla Valley, almond blossoms are the symbol of Mallorca. There is also a fig tree growing here, from the fruits of which bread is made, and carob – its ripe pods form the basis of the Palo liqueur.

The Almond Blossom is the symbol of the island

Almond Blossom Fair takes place on a plantation near Son Servera. Look for “Fira de la Flor d’Ametler” posters.

The degrees are slowly but surely gaining momentum – both at sea and on land.

March: The sea, which has cooled down during the winter, warms up very gradually. While the water is still +14°C. There are a few more sunny days, the average temperature is +16°C, after sunset +9°C. March 1 is a public holiday, the Independence Day of the Balearic Islands. You can go to the ceramics fair “Fira del Fang” in the city of Marrachi.

At the Ceramics Fair in Marratchi

Many farmers in the countryside organize folklore and gastronomic fiestas to celebrate the arrival of spring. Take an interest in the chart.

April: Less rain, more sun. Daytime average +18..19°C, night +10°C. The sea is cold, +16°C, but you can see the first bathers. Everywhere there are rural holidays. One of the largest, with a demonstration of cattle, in the city of Andratx. In the vast bay of the capital of the island – an exhibition of ships “Palma Boat Show”.

The famous Princess Sofia regatta gathers athletes from all over the world

The Princess Sofia Trophy sailing regatta takes place here, against the backdrop of La Seu Cathedral. The spectacular event attracts thousands of tourists to the island already in early spring.

May: Sea water warms up from +17°C at the beginning to +21°C by the end of the month. With air also – from +22°C to +28°C. Nights are still spring +14..15°C. Guests of Mallorca ply the island. The old 9 gauge Soller railway14mm is better than any roller coaster. On it, curious tourists overcome the Sierra del Alfabia mountain range (height 496 m) under slopes sometimes reaching 23%. In a short distance of 27 km they pass 13 tunnels and the Sink Points Viaduct. They often settle in the marvelous town of Soller, where they enjoy the view of orange trees and the juices of their fruits, ice cream, cakes and kinder than in the capital, the faces of the inhabitants. You can take the authentic tram to the beaches of Puerto de Soller. Tourists use it with pleasure, considering the trip a separate attraction. Spring is coming to an end, but not rural holidays.

Legendary old train from Palma to Soller

Wine fiesta in Pollensa. In Soller, there will be a grand battle of the Moors with the Christians “Moros i Crisians” – a theatrical performance with refreshments and fireworks until the morning. The city of Capdepera in the north of the island does not lag behind and plunges into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages for three whole days.

You will only find rain and clouds in mountainous areas, but it will be extremely difficult not to notice tourists. Temperatures and prices skyrocket. One hope for last-minute tours, as sea bathing is the best at this time of year.

June: +25°C during the day, +32..33°C at the end of the month. At night +19..22°C, in water +22..23°C. By July in hot weather and all +24°C. Rain is extremely rare. The summer season begins: yachts sail, all clubs open their doors, sports tournaments take place. The season is open all month long and never gets tired: the apotheosis in the twenties is Nit del Foc, the night of fire in the capital’s Parc de la Mar. In the city of Muro, the festival is called “Festa d’es Sol que Baila”, the festival of dancing fire.

Tourists often come to Puerto de Soller to admire yachts and boats. Since Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, falls in June, parades of ships take place in the ports of the cities of Andratx and Alcudia, accompanied by the absorption of seafood on the shores.

July: Most of the month +32. .35°C, at least it was last year. At night, the air cools down only to +25..27°C. In the sea, too, +25..27°C. Hot and dry. The ocean is far away, but in July 2018 a two-meter tsunami reached the western coast of the island, watch out for announcements about the level of weather danger. In Pollença there is a classical music festival, in the city of Inca there is a jazz festival. Concerts are also held at Bellver Castle.

Christians fight the Moors at La Patrona

It’s time to honor the local patron saint of fishermen: welcome to the creative Verge del Carme fiesta in Puerto Pollença and Porto Cristo. Do not be alarmed if you hear cannon shots and screams at the end of the month – it is at the La Patrona festival that the Moors and Christians are fighting again. This battle will end only in August, so you can not rush from the beach. Since the day is hot and people spend time at the sea, the markets in Palma, Porto Cristo and other tourist places are open at night. Do not miss the opportunity to buy souvenirs in the cool of the night.

August: Month of heat and dominance of vacationers. During the day it is constantly more than +30°C, at night +24..26°C, in water +26..27°C. Each settlement spends holidays with fires and literally hellish dances – follow the poster, everything is unpredictable and very bright. In the capital’s Parc de la Mar, an open-air movie is shown all month long.

Sand castle on Mallorca beach

The tiny town of Sa Pobla hosts world-class jazz performers. In the Bay of Palma, sailing yacht races take place for a week, in which the King of Spain sometimes takes part, since the main prize is the Copa de Rey (King’s Cup).

September October November
Day temperature +27. 5 ° C +23,9 6°C +14.4°C

September: Both the air and the sea have warmed up. The daytime temperature is still below +30°C, the nights are gradually becoming cool, but +18°C is not a disaster, but a long-awaited freshness and coolness. Water in the sea +24..26°C is just a gift for vacationers. This time is also loved by divers, who, by the way, praise the local underwater world very much. Where watermelons grow, Festa del Melo takes place. In other places, King Jaime I is remembered. The festival dedicated to him lasts for two whole weeks and is again accompanied – do not believe it! – theatrical battles of the Moors with Christians. The largest religious festival takes place in the city of Santa Margalida, patronized by St. Catalina Thomas. On the Night of the Arts, you can walk around the original local galleries.

Festa des Vermar in the village of Binissalem. Participants of the grape battle in white clothes

Clubs and bars will celebrate the end of the season with wild round-the-clock parties. You can hide from decibels at the festival of harvesting a new grape harvest in the village of Binissalem. One condition – you must arrive in white. There will be a grape battle and a mountain feast, where a giant paella will be prepared for the guests.

October: The first half of the month is quite swimmable, the sea is still +23..24°C. The air temperature gradually decreases from +26..27°C to +22°C, by night it cools down to +15°C and the winds are getting stronger. It can rain for a third of the month. In October 2018, San Lorenzo de Cassadar in the east of the island experienced a record amount of rainfall, a terrible flood occurred, the water rose above 3 meters, so do not take the forecasts lightly. At the beginning of October, to the delight of the arriving tourists and the deafened locals, the youth leaves, the “madhouse” ends.

Sobrassada Sausage Fair

Porto de Soller hosts relaxing classical music concerts on weekends. The International Marathon falls in the middle of the month; special distances are provided for different categories of runners. In the mountain village of Esporles, there is a sweet fair. In the city of Campos (Campos) festival of local sausage Sobrassada. Felanitx has a red pepper fair. In the town of Consell, there is an autumn wine festival. Golf lovers will gather at the Pinmar tournament, tennis fans are waiting for the Legends Cup.

November: Deep autumn brings an average temperature of +18°C (+23°C in 2019), +11°C at night. The sea cools down from +23°C to +19°C. When it snows in the mountains, it does not reach the plains and the coast. Unlucky with the weather – go to the Carthusian monastery in Valldemossa in cell number 4, which George Sand and Chopin stopped in just in November. The composer was sick, trying to warm himself with a medieval device, which they will certainly show you. You will be warm and comfortable.

The patio of the ancient monastery, where Frederic Chopin and George Sand walked

Continuous agricultural fiestas are going on: in the city of Muro they choose the largest pumpkin, in the foothill village of Caimari – an olive fair, in Santa Maria del Cami (Santa Maria del Cami) – a celebration of young wine with tastings and stories about the production process. If you want to know what “red forest mushrooms” are, look for the Esclatasang mushroom fair – it takes place at the end of the month, a festive dinner is guaranteed.

When is the best time to go on holiday to Mallorca

The weather on the island allows you to relax here at any time of the year. True, George Sand was twice wrong when she brought the sick Chopin in the winter. Firstly, they were not allowed into the hotel because they were not spouses. Secondly, in the monastery where they rented a cell, there was no normal heating. In the 21st century, it is not difficult to find out, being thousands of kilometers away, what conditions will be offered to you. People lived here even during the Paleolithic. And at other times they constantly looked. The island has a rich history. It was once part of Carthage, but pirates came and became the main ones here. They were defeated by the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus, and the island became part of the Roman Empire. Then the Vandals came, then the Byzantines, then the fighters of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

The biggest of all the Canary Islands, holidays to Tenerife are pretty diverse. From its black and golden coastline to its moon-like landscapes and beautiful little hamlets, it’s an island of two sides. The south is where you’ll find its most popular beach resorts; Playa de Las Américas, Los Cristianos, Puerto de la Cruz and Costa Adeje. Not to mention, some of its biggest family attractions. While the north has a much gentler pace, ideal for soaking up Tenerife’s Canarian heritage, from the cobbled streets of La Orotava to the colonial architecture of Puerto de la Cruz.

                Things to do

Finding ways to fill your time will never be a problem in Tenerife. For starters, it’s got a great set of beaches. For golden sands which stretch for two kilometres and snorkel-friendly waters, Playa de las Teresitas is one of its best. Prefer a coastline that’s a little rough around the edges? Trips to Playa de los Gigantes invite you to sunbathe on volcanic sand, surrounded by a backdrop of soaring sea cliffs.

If your Canary Island holidays are about late nights spent dancing, then you’ve come to the right place. Known for its thriving resorts, Tenerife has a party reputation that doesn’t go unnoticed, and the nightlife in Playa de Las Americas is one of its liveliest, particularly along Veronica’s Strip.

After a big night on the town, there’s no better way to blow the cobwebs away than exploring the great outdoors. Dominating the centre of the island is Spain’s tallest peak, the beautiful Mount Teide. And don’t worry if you’re not much of a climber, there’s a cable car taking you right to the  volcano’s summit. There are plenty more adventures to be had besides Mount Teide, like a day exploring the island’s answer to Machu Picchu at the hidden village of Masca.

Families won’t be disappointed either! After a splash-filled trip to Siam Park, one of Europe’s best waterparks, the kids will love the island’s animal attractions. A visit to the Monkey Park is a must on all Los Cristianos holidays. Walk through its open enclosures and be greeted by squirrel monkeys and lemurs. Those looking for a wildlife experience on a bigger scale will appreciate Loro Parque, which is home to all kinds of land and marine species.

                Places to stay

A trio of lively resorts covers the southwest corner of Tenerife with fine sandy beaches and plenty of family-friendly facilities. Choose from Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. The pretty capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, lies in the shelter of the Anaga Mountains that sit right in the middle of the island. Charming fishing villages like San Andrés dot the coastline, where you can tuck into some fresh seafood from its waterside restaurants. Head north past the white peak of Mount Teide and you come to dreamy La Orotava, a beautifully preserved 17th-century town of pretty pastel colours. Just beyond is the attractive Puerto de la Cruz, which is another popular tourist spot.

                  Events in Tenerife

Carnival time: For two weeks in February, the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is carnival central. Leave the cold and the rain back in England; head to the sun and join in with the celebrations. Expect vibrant parades, fireworks, parties, and celebrations as the island throws off winter and welcomes spring with music, dancing, and plenty of drinking!

Easter celebrations: Easter sees the island celebrate again, with the festivities of “Semana Santa”, or Holy Week, marking the end of Lent in spirited style.

Patron saint: Join the party in August when Tenerife celebrates its patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria, with two days of spectacles.

For wine lovers: Raise a glass and try out the latest vintage in November. The feast of St Andrew in Icod de Los Vinos is a chance for the island’s winemakers to showcase the year’s vintage.

                  Tenerife weather

Temperature: You can bask in 22°C most of the year here.

                  Best time to visit?

Nicknamed the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’, Tenerife holidays promise year-round heat, even during off-season. The most popular time of year is from May to July, when temperatures range from around 24°C to 28°C and a cooling sea breeze stops things from getting uncomfortably hot.

If your Spain holidays revolve around the beach, August is a great time of year to visit, when the sea temperature averages around 23°C, perfect for swimming, fishing and snorkelling. The summer also promises nine hours of sunshine and highs of 28°C. While couples looking for a quiet break should head here during autumn when the Atlantic is still warm enough for a swim.

Tenerife is a popular destination for winter sun too. Although cooler, temperatures rarely drop below 15°C. The island is generally quieter during these months, which means you can visit tourist attractions and enjoy beach days without the busy atmosphere of the summer months.

                  What should I pack?

There are some essentials you’ll definitely need on your trip to Tenerife, no matter what time of year you’re visiting. With its long, hot, sunny days, plenty of sun cream is a must, as is a hat and a cover-up for the beach or the pool. We also advise taking some sunglasses and plenty of cool, light clothes to help combat the summer heat.

It’s a good idea to pack comfortable shoes if you’re planning on sightseeing, while a light jacket is ideal for cooler evenings in low season. An EU travel adaptor is also essential for charging your mobile phone and other devices.

                  Why Tenerife?

Holidays to Tenerife are famous for offering sun worshippers the chance to kick back and relax with a book or a cocktail in one of the most stunning and accessible holiday spots around. Brimming with belting beaches and homely restaurants, Tenerife holidays are popular for good reason. There’s a guarantee of glorious summer sunshine, gleaming blue seas, and loads of fun activities for families and adventurers that will fill the days with beaming smiles and plenty of laughter.

Slip and slide your way across the island’s world-famous waterparks on some outrageously fun free-fallers and tranquil lazy rivers. Heading out to sea, serious explorers can take a plunge beneath the waves and scuba-dive among the kaleidoscope of sea life, meeting rainbows of fish and other fascinating creatures. Thrill-seekers can also take to the open waters, zooming around the glorious, postcard-worthy coast on a jet-ski before heading back to the mainland for a well-earned, hearty feast.

Golfers can tee off on some of the glorious greens dotted across the island, while partygoers young and old can hit the strips of Playa de Las Americas and dance until the early hours with friendly locals and other holidaymakers out for a big sesh.

And if sitting around eating and drinking the days away beneath the beaming sunshine is your ideal trip, then a holiday to Tenerife could well be the perfect destination for you.

                  Things to Do

Whether you’re looking for a beach getaway or city break, Tenerife has something to offer every discerning traveller

                  Playa del Duque

The gloriously soft sand and gently rolling waves are a real taste of paradise on Playa del Duque. Live the high life beneath the bamboo parasols, then saunter up to one of the nearby cafes for refreshments.

                  Playa de la Tejita

With all the exciting hustle and bustle of the island, sometimes it’s great to get away from it all and clear the head with a serene stroll along a quiet beach. If that sounds a bit like you, the long strip of Playa de la Tejita is a top spot.

                  Playa Jardin

An alternative to the snow-white sands that Tenerife is known for, Playa Jardin’s combo of black sand and tropical plant life provides a banging photo opp, and makes for a lovely place to spend the day basking in sunshine.

                  Playa de las Teresitas

Lined with palm trees along the eye-poppingly turquoise sea, this is a spot you’ll often see on Tenerife postcards. Get your Instagram game firmly on – there’s no better beach to snap and send home pics for maximum jealousy.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

The main language spoken by locals here is Spanish. However, you’ll never be far from someone who speaks English – particularly in the more touristy areas.

You can easily visit Tenerife on a fairly tight budget, as the Canary Islands are generally very reasonably priced. Compared to other Spanish destinations like Ibiza or Mallorca, Tenerife is not considered expensive.

Much of the tourist activity (and the picturesque beaches) in Tenerife are towards the south, so this is where holidaymakers will stay.

The Tenerife sea is so nice that Ed Sheeran literally wrote a song about it. It’s a nice temperature for swimming all year round, rarely dropping below 19 degrees and warming up in summer.

The weather is best between June and September in Tenerife, so this summer period is the best time to head there. However, jetting off on either side of the UK summer holidays will mean fewer crowds on the beaches and lower prices for accommodation and flights.

                  Weather in Tenerife in October

In October, the first signs of autumn appear in Tenerife, especially in the second half of the month: the days become shorter, the air temperature is slightly lower, precipitation is more likely, and the ocean cools down by 1 degree compared to September. Note that in the south of the island there are fewer winds and it is always a little warmer, including the water temperature. So, the air temperature in Tenerife in the daytime is about + 26 ° C, and at night already +19°C, so you will most likely need warm clothes in the evenings. The water temperature in October is about +23 °C, and by the end of the month it is slightly cooler. In coves and shallow waters, the water is usually slightly warmer. If you like to swim for a long time or you are traveling with children, then you should choose a hotel with a heated pool. If one of the cloudy or rainy days happened in October, then by choosing the right excursion or other activity, you will not lose the day and spend it interestingly.

What is interesting in Tenerife in October?

Tenerife is a small island, but extremely diverse – here you can find places overgrown with dense forests like in Bosca, or overgrown with meadows like near the town of La Laguna, medieval villages such as Masca, and much, much more. In general, there are enough interesting places to visit and exciting activities for everyone.

                  Beach holiday

Nature initially endowed Tenerife with gorgeous natural beaches, although the color of the sand here is dark and this is due to the volcanic origin of the island. There are also white sand beaches in Tenerife, brought, for example, from the Sahara, but there are few of them.

                  Entertainment

Tenerife has everything, both for lovers of nightlife and for those who cannot imagine a vacation without visiting amusement parks and attractions.

                  Active recreation

Those for whom the movement and adrenaline on holiday – the most important thing – will find many exciting activities on the island – diving, golf, parasailing, kitesurfing, and surfing, and even beginners can practice these sports.

                  Holidays and festivals

In October, Tenerife hosts a large number of concerts, celebrations and festivals. One of them is the opening of the opera season on the island, during which performances are held in the unique building of the opera house (Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz). On October 12, the island, as well as in Spain as a whole, celebrates a national holiday – the day of the discovery of America by Columbus, when magnificent events are held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In October, the Canary Magic Festival, held in the capital of Tenerife at the Gimera Theater, is very popular among tourists. In addition, in one city or another, one of the many festivals takes place, as, for example, in this video – the Folklore Festival in Adeje.

What are the prices for holidays in Tenerife in October?

The cost of tours in Tenerife in October can be called average – there is still demand, because many beach destinations in Europe have closed, but there is no particular excitement yet.

Tenerife reviews: general impressions even black, warm ocean, comfortable beaches. The weather conditions are so favorable that you can visit the island all year round.

True, travelers complained about slow internet, and this applies to any part of the island. Perhaps such a policy is aimed at ensuring that people have a little rest from high technologies.

                  Reviews of hotels in Tenerife

Hotels on the island, judging by the responses, are designed for a variety of categories of tourists – there are luxurious five-star hotels, where there are no complaints from vacationers, and two- and three-star hotels, where not bad, but not all so smooth. By the way, we recommend searching for hotels in the Canary Islands on the Roomguru.ru metasearch engine, which searches among several leading booking systems at once and finds the best price.

According to tourist reviews for 2021, most hotels in Tenerife received a high rating, regardless of the star rating and cost of living. Vacationers appreciated the level of service, the location of the hotel is good in most cases, but at the same time they noted some shortcomings.

The Iberostar Anthelia 5* hotel in Costa Adeje deserves the best ratings among tourists. The hotel is suitable for families with infants. Large landscaped area, swimming pools, restaurants, mini-club for children and other services, close to two beaches with black and white sand. Excellent European cuisine, extensive Spanish wine list.

People who crave a relaxing holiday recommend Jardines De Nivaria 5* in Costa Adeje. The hotel is located near the beach and promenade, close to the airport – 20 minutes drive. The rooms are always clean, excellent cuisine, two swimming pools, SPA. Young people will be bored here, because there is no animation and noisy discos.

Where to live in Tenerife >>

Judging by the reviews of tourists, the Sol Tenerife 4 * hotel in Playa de las Americas is quite popular with our compatriots. Excellent beach in front of the hotel, excellent cuisine, well-groomed territory, many services for children, cafes and shops. There are noisy streets nearby, so you need to choose your room carefully.

Flamingo Club 3*, a resort complex of apartments in Playa de Las Americas, deserves a fly in the ointment. The hotel stands on the first coastline, a beach with light sand. Animation at a high level, shops and cafes, near the port and the yacht club. The rooms have a kitchen. But people complained about the inattentive attitude of the guides, the noise of the parties, as well as the dishonest tricks of the hotel management regarding the timeshare service. As tourists warn, there is too much false information, and the price of the offer leaves much to be desired.

The Los Cardones budget apartment complex in Playa de las Americas has received its share of negative reviews, although the reviews are generally good. Vacationers complained about insufficient cleanliness, old furniture, sometimes unsanitary conditions in the rooms, problems with hot water, indifferent behavior of staff, and attempts at theft were recorded. Obviously, the hotel is designed for a very unpretentious tourist.

                  Prices and shopping – 2022

Most tourists note the European level of prices in Tenerife. Souvenirs and household items with food are quite affordable. But what is inexpensive for a European is not always suitable for our compatriot, so some travelers tried to limit their expenses by avoiding visiting local cafes and restaurants. The average check in a cafe for a lunch with wine is about 20-25 euros per person. Expensive excursions and prices for entrance tickets to attractions – from 30 to 60 euros per person.

The island is a tax-free zone, everything can be bought a little cheaper than on the continent. Shops delight shoppers with discounts, some items of famous brands can be bought at a 60-70% discount. The central street of the town of Playa de Las Americas – the Golden Mile – is popular with vacationers, there are many multi-brand stores. The largest number of shopping centers and shops is located in the capital of the island, Santa Cruz.

                  Beaches and resorts in Tenerife

Judging by the reports, our compatriots prefer to relax on the south coast of Tenerife, where the weather conditions are milder and the infrastructure is well developed – this situation will not change in 2022. The most popular resorts are Playa de Las Americas and Costa Adeje. The latter is preferred by lovers of respectable rest.

A relatively inexpensive place in Tenerife is Puerto de la Cruz. Low prices attract a large number of tourists, many rent transport here or stay in a tent camp.

The general impression of the cities of the island, according to the responses, is very clean. Sidewalks are washed, flower beds are decorated. All beaches are public, you need to pay 3-5 euros for a sunbed with an umbrella. Every morning the beaches are cleaned with special equipment, the shores are perfectly clean.

Holidays in Tenerife with children – 2022

According to tourists, holidays with children in Tenerife exceed all expectations. You can safely go to the island with a small child: there is no danger of getting infected, which is typical for most exotic resorts, or being bitten by insects or snakes. In addition, the pleasant climate is very well tolerated by children. Tourists also note the high level of service and good food. A whole network of entertainment has been created for children in Tenerife – zoos, water parks, dolphinariums, theaters and shows of marine animals, and so on.

                  Tenerife tips and tricks

Many tourists have noted that excellent wines can be purchased on the island for around 5-10 euros per bottle. Experienced travelers recommend bringing Malvasia wine and palm honey as a souvenir. It is better to buy pearls in special centers where certificates are provided for the goods.

The island is very convenient for sightseeing on your own. To do this, it is enough to buy a card and rent a transport or hire a taxi with a driver for the whole day. You can rent any vehicle – bicycles, scooters and cars, the cost depends on the brand and year of manufacture. Excursions are more profitable to buy for several days.

In general, holidays in Tenerife in 2022, according to tourists, are primarily suitable for those who love nature and a relaxing pastime without night races in clubs and discos. Perhaps that is why there are so many European pensioners and couples with children on the island.

Tenerife is a province of the Kingdom of Spain, the largest and most populous of the seven islands of the Canary archipelago, whose shores are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The sands of Tenerife are black, of volcanic origin, there are coastal zones with golden imported sand from the Sahara. Mount Teide, rocky cliffs, mountain ranges, lagoons, coral atolls, a high level of hotel service and a variety of entertainment – Tenerife has everything that the soul of a tourist desires. And further! The Spanish island is the only European resort where a beach holiday can be organized even in winter.

                    Tenerife climate

The climate of the island is tropical. If we talk about the coast, there are no strong temperature fluctuations at different times of the year. In summer +26 °С, in winter +19 °С, water temperature in summer +25 °C, in winter +20 °C. But these are average figures, it must be borne in mind that the southern and northern coasts of the island, separated by a mountain range, are different.

In the resorts of the south they have a rest all year round, it is always sunny and comfortable here, in January and February the air temperature is +25 °C. It is cooler in the north, the beach season ends in November, but there are daredevils who swim in winter, water temperature +20 ° C and air temperature +17 ° C are not critical. Precipitation and wind are much more unpleasant, in January and February they are in abundance in the north. In the south, this problem is not present, the coast protects the mountain range from the winds, and rains are always rare here.

In the mountains, at an altitude of more than 3000 m, there is snow in winter. The snow-covered crater of the dormant Teide volcano in the heart of the island looks picturesque.

                    Tenerife Popular Resorts

Tenerife is called “an island with two faces”, and all because the mountain range divides the territory into two parts. Warm and dry in the south, wet and green in the north. What kind of vacation to choose is up to you …

                    Tenerife South Coast

Features of the region. The area is windless, the mountain range protects from the cold east trade winds. There is little rainfall and the area is dry. There are practically no waves, which makes this region an ideal place for a beach holiday. The beaches are covered with fine black volcanic sand. The infrastructure is well developed, hotels are mostly new buildings, the 4-5 * sector dominates, there are many entertainments – restaurants, bars, diving, fishing. Here they rest all year round.

Las Americas – the largest resort in the south of the island, the noisiest, youth. In the central part of the city, fun is in full swing until late at night, it is here that bars and discos are concentrated. The western part of the resort is more calm and respectable. The beach sector is represented by a large number of comfortable places, all of them are free, but you will have to pay up to 10 € per day for a sunbed and an umbrella. There are no waves, as the beaches are protected by stone barriers.

Los Cristianos – a quiet and cozy resort at the foot of the volcano, it is chosen by older tourists and island guests who are tired of the bustle, want to relax and unwind on the beach. There are restaurants, and shops, and even clubs, but after dark it becomes quiet. Tourists visit two beaches: compact Playa de los Cristianos and spacious Playa de las Vistas.

Costa Adeje is the best place for families with children. Once part of Las Americas, then became an independent resort. Prices here are somewhat higher than in other cities on the south coast, largely due to new hotel development and an increased level of service. The water off the coast is very clean and calm, three beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag (Troya I, Troya II, Playa de Fanabe). All beaches are located in bays.

                    Tenerife North Coast

Features of the region. The north of the island is literally immersed in greenery due to high humidity. The temperature here is always a few degrees lower than on the south coast. The ocean is rarely calm, the waves are quite large, but there are bays in which the water does not worry. The north has its charms – if in the south you find yourself in the whirlwind of tourist life, in the north you will feel the hospitality and warmth of the Spaniards. Many locals live here, they are friendly and always ready to help. In the north it is calm and beautiful – this is a place for those who love picturesque nature and prefer excursions.

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the largest resorts in the north, the oldest in the Canary Islands. The city has two beaches. Eastern Playa Martianez – wild with big waves. Playa Jardin – in bays, with breakwaters, tropical greenery and a waterfall in another part of the city. The resort also has another visiting card – a complex with islands made of volcanic lava and pools with sea water.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island. Tourists come here mainly for impressions, and not for the sake of beach relaxation. Although in the vicinity of the capital you can find good areas for swimming and sunbathing: Taganana – a beautiful natural black sand beach and Las Teresitas – an artificial beach with yellow sand imported from the Sahara (a rare case for Tenerife).

Thanks to the winds in the capital area, you can go surfing. Famous diving centers are also located here. After training, guests of the island dive in the area of the coral reefs Garden and Stena, descend to the wreck of the Carbonero and into underwater caves.

                      stroked a lemur in Tenerife

The island is divided by a ridge of volcanic origin into two parts: southern and northern. The sparse landscapes of the desert south are different from those of the north, where everything is green and blooming.

My parents and I went to Tenerife in 2018. To admire the unusual landscapes, we rented a car and drove around the whole island in it. In two weeks, we managed to sunbathe on the black sand, climb to the top of the volcano, pet lemurs and eat seafood. The plans are to return to Tenerife again. There are so many interesting things that it is simply impossible to explore everything in one trip.

                    ✈️ Road

Aeroflot and Es-7, as well as the Spanish Iberia, fly directly from Russia to Tenerife. Prices for tickets from Moscow start from 22,000 R in both directions. There are no direct flights from St. Petersburg.

In my experience, it is more profitable to fly to Tenerife from Europe. For example, in 2018, a flight from Helsinki to Tenerife with a stopover in Barcelona cost 11,000 R in both directions. On the way, you can drink sangria and climb the Sagrada Familia.

Tenerife has two airports – south and north. Planes from Russia arrive south, at Reina-Sofia Airport. European flights most often land in northern Los Rodeos.

                    🏖️ Resorts & Beaches Tenerife

When I was vacationing on the island in 2018, 12 Tenerife beaches were awarded the Blue Flag. This means that the coast has crystal clear water and developed infrastructure. The award is given once a year: every season, the commission again checks the beaches for compliance with high standards.

Playa de Las Americas is the most popular resort on the south coast. It is always warm there, because the mountain range protects the city from the winds and vagaries of the weather.

In my opinion, Playa de Las Americas is a branch of Turkey in the Canary Islands. There are tall modern hotels and entertainment for every taste: noisy parties, catamaran rides and gatherings with compatriots at the bar. This resort may also be suitable for tourists who prefer group tours with a guide in Russian.

From the port of Los Gigantes pleasure boats go to the famous “hell walls”. This is the name of the powerful sheer cliffs of Los Gigantes, formed from basalt volcanic rock. On a boat trip you can meet dolphins and whales. Even from the water you can see the picturesque gorge of Mask, where the mountain settlement is located.

I didn’t swim in Los Gigantes because our goal was to take a boat ride and take pictures with the whales. I didn’t manage to take a selfie with them, but the meeting with a flock of dolphins caused me real delight.

Playa de la Arena is a small cozy beach with volcanic sand. I really liked it there: fewer tourists rest in this area, so you can comfortably sit and meditate. But the beach has a minus: on a hot day, the black sand heats up so that you can burn your heels.

Puerto de Santiago. Due to volcanic activity, many open natural pools have formed in Tenerife. This is a part of the ocean near the coast, which is enclosed by solidified lava.

One of these pools is El Tancon, located in the city of Puerto de Santiago. Swimming in the pool is allowed if the ocean is calm. During waves, the pool is hidden by water.

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the largest northern cities in Tenerife. We walked along the narrow streets of the old town and admired the mountain landscapes of the island. There is always a fresh wind blowing from the ocean, so the resort will be comfortable for those who do not tolerate heat well.

Puerto de la Cruz is also suitable for those who love a relaxing holiday. Locals live here, and there are few Russians among tourists. Mostly the British rest in the city. The highlight of the resort is the Costa Martianez. This is a complex of 7 outdoor pools with sea water right on the ocean.

Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena are located close to each other – the boundaries between them are practically erased. It is calm there: there are few tourists and there are no high-rise hotels. But there are cozy taverns and picturesque embankments. In the photo – Los Gigantes Most of all in Tenerife I liked swimming in the ocean pools. The water in them is calm and warm, although the ocean is raging nearby

San Andrés is a pretty village at the foot of Mount Anaga. In the eastern part of the village, the ruins of the fort of the same name have been preserved, which has been protecting residents from pirates since 1706.

San Andrés is famous for Las Torecitas beach. Sand for it was specially brought from the Sahara. It is comfortable to swim on the beach: the rocks protect the village from the wind, and the waves break on a specially built stone dam.

Benijo Beach is considered one of the most beautiful wild beaches of the island. There is black volcanic sand, strong waves, and rocks resembling crocodile teeth. There are no changing rooms or showers on Benijo. Of the infrastructure, only garbage cans. But this is where you should go for the most incredible sunsets on the island.

Before the trip, I advise you to pay attention to the tide chart. The beach is gently sloping, so at high tide it is almost completely hidden under water.

Sunset on Benijo beach. Note to romantics: this is the perfect place to propose to your girlfriend

                    🌋 Tenerife Attractions

Tenerife has a lot to see. For example, in the cultural capital of the island, San Cristobal de la Laguna, there is a main cathedral. Almond orchards bloom in Santiago del Teide, while 16th-century buildings have been preserved in La Orotava. Not far from Icod de Los Vinos, a volcanic cave 18 km long was formed. There are also several parks and reserves on the island where animals roam. There, for the first time in my life, I hand-fed lemurs.

Here are the main attractions of the island that I remember.

Dormant volcano Teide. It last erupted in 1909. The landscapes on the way to Teide are called Martian because of the reddish hue and the relief created by the solidified lava.

The volcano is located in the national park. There you can walk along the hiking trails and climb to the top of the Teide. Compared to the coast, it is very cold on the volcano: a maximum of +10 °C. I got ready and took my jacket and hat with me. In the funicular cabin, other tourists looked at me with curiosity, and at the top – with envy.

The park is open 24/7 and free of charge. Climbing the volcano by cable car will cost 13.5 €⁣ (999 R) one way. It is better to buy tickets in advance on the official website to avoid queues.

The road to the Teide volcano resembles the scenery for the movie “The Martian” Cable car to the top of the Teide volcano. I can’t even believe that it’s +28 °C below, and there is snow here

Loro Parque is the most popular park on the island. Once upon a time, thousands of parrots lived there: “loro” in Spanish means a parrot. Today it is a whole entertainment complex. The territory of the park resembles a tropical forest, in which crocodiles, chimpanzees, jaguars and other exotic animals live in addition to birds. Every day, the park hosts a show featuring killer whales, fur seals and dolphins.

The show schedule can be found on the Loro Park website. Entrance for an adult costs 38 €⁣ (2812 R), for a child – 26 €⁣ (1924 R).

Dragon Tree is the biggest tree I have ever seen. It is 20 meters high and 10 meters in girth. The tree grows in the city of Icod de los Vinos. Scientists argue about its age: some say that the tree is 1500 years old, others – 3000. The exact age cannot be determined, because the Dragon tree does not have annual rings.

You can look at the tree in Drago Park for 5 €⁣ (370 R). If you don’t want to spend money, look into the square opposite: the tree is clearly visible even from afar.

Garachico is a northern city rebuilt on lava after the Trevejo eruption in 1706. There are many El Caleton lava pools. When the lava flowed out of the volcano, it collided with water and solidified, which is why all the baths are of an unusual shape.

Swimming in El Caleton in summer. In winter, lava pools are usually closed due to high waves. In Tenerife, pine trees of luscious green color make their way through the solidified lava flows

                    💶 Money

The currency in Tenerife is the euro. Cards are accepted everywhere except markets and public transport. There are many ATMs, but local banks charge a fee. I don’t even remember its exact size.

If you take cash with you, I advise you to exchange it for small bills – 10, 20 or 50 euros each. Otherwise, the seller may not have change.

Canary Islands – free economic zone. Here, import duties are low, and taxes are 4.5 times lower than in mainland Spain. This means that goods in Tenerife are cheaper than on the continent, especially alcohol and perfumes. For example, the price of Baileys liquor in Tenerife is 4 €⁣ (286 R) lower than in duty free at Barcelona airport. Another nice bonus of a paradise island.

                    🐙 Food

Cafes and restaurants. It is better to try local food in small cafes away from tourist places. There are good and inexpensive fish restaurants in Tenerife in the fishing town of Los Abrigos and in the village of Tajao. Dinner for three with appetizers, grilled fish and a liter of homemade wine cost us 38 € (2812 R).

Traditional dishes are simple but delicious. For example, potaje is a thick vegetable stew for €5⁣ (370 R). “Carne de Cabra” is a roast goat meat with vegetables and wine sauce, costs 9€⁣ (644 R). The “wrinkled” potatoes, beloved by the islanders, will cost 3.5 €⁣ (259 R). It is boiled unpurified in heavily salted water, which boils away completely by the end of cooking and leaves salt crystals on the potato skin.

In restaurants, at the request of customers, the leftover portions are put into a container and given away. Some tourists are embarrassed to take food, but in vain: this is how the Spaniards understand that the client liked the dishes.

There are Chinese buffet cafes on the island. There for 9€⁣ (644 R) you get unlimited access to tables with appetizers, hot dishes, sushi, jamon, seafood and desserts. Drinks must be paid separately. A bottle of beer costs 4 €⁣ (296 R), water – 2 €⁣ (148 R). This is probably why some dishes are quite salty.

National products. A well-known Canarian product is goat cheese. Tenerife sells semi-hard and hard varieties of Arico, Montesdeoka and Benijos brands. A piece weighing 200 g costs from 4 €⁣ (296 R).

The warm climate of Tenerife makes it possible to grow different types of fruits all year round, including exotic ones. I definitely advise you to try the local sweet and plump bananas costing from 1.2 €⁣ (88 R) per kilogram and the unusual sweet and sour fruit “nispero”. It will cost 2.5 €⁣ (185 R) per kilogram.

Tenerife is a paradise for seafood lovers. There are a lot of different fish and shellfish in local shops and restaurants. Prices are reasonable: the average cost of one oyster in a restaurant is 1. 5 €⁣ (111 R).

I am a fan of seafood, so I gorged myself on them for a year ahead. At home she cooked mussels with blue cheese sauce, in a restaurant she dined with grilled octopus or oysters. It sounds like a luxury vacation, but the prices are actually quite affordable. On average, at a time in a cafe or restaurant, I paid 20 €⁣ (1228 R).

Homemade dinner options in Tenerife. Cooking with local products is a pleasure. A kilogram of fresh mussels in the store will cost 3.5 € (259 R)

Shops. There are famous European chain stores on the island: Lidl, Hiper Dino, Hiper Trebol, Spar. But the most popular supermarket is Mercadona, it is located in every Tenerife resort. There is a good selection of products and prices are lower than in other stores. For example, king prawns and dorado cost 6.5 €⁣ (481 R) per 1 kg, jamon from 1 €⁣ (74 R) per 100 g, a liter of sangria from 1 €⁣ (74 R), a bunch of asparagus – 3 €⁣ (222 R).

                    🚃 Transport

The best way to explore the island is to rent a car. I advise you to book it in advance on the Internet, because it is more profitable this way. You can also choose a good car, and not be content with what is left in the fleet.

There are many big car rental companies in Tenerife: PlusCar, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Goldcar, Budget, Autoreisen, Cicar. One of the most popular firms on the island is Plus Car. It is famous for its affordable prices and lack of collateral. But it also has its drawbacks. For example, they may issue an old car or not the one you booked in advance. The company directly writes about this to customers by e-mail. But on the last trip we were lucky: Plus-car gave us a new Mazda instead of the booked Toyota. Although she was a class higher, no extra money was taken from us. We paid 240 €⁣ (17,760 R) for a two-week rental.

From public transport in Tenerife there is a tram running along the route Santa Cruz – La Laguna, as well as buses and taxis.

Buses are called “gua-gua” in local slang. Their communication is well developed: comfortable bright green buses pass through the island’s most popular beaches and attractions. You can check the schedule and ticket prices on the official website.

The bus fare starts at €1.45⁣ (R107) depending on the distance. A ticket is bought for cash directly from the driver during boarding. If you plan to travel by bus often, it is more profitable to buy a Bono Bus pass and save a few euros. You can buy “Bono-bass” at newsstands, kiosks and stations. There are options for 15 €⁣ (1110 R) or 25 €⁣ (1850 R).

                    🏠 Housing

Many all-inclusive hotels have been built along the south coast, such as the Barceló Santiago or the Hotel Best Jacaranda. A week’s stay in a hotel of this class will cost at least 1,200 €⁣ (88,800 R) for two people when booking independently.

If you prefer to cook dinner in your own kitchen, you can rent an apartment on Airbnb. In June, renting a two-room apartment in Las Americas with an ocean view will cost 270 €⁣ (19,980 R) for two for 10 days. Sometimes apartments on Booking are cheaper, so compare prices before booking.

Instead of a five-star hotel, we chose an apartment overlooking the sea and palm trees near Playa de la Arena Almond blossoms in Santiago del Teide. There I found out that I was allergic to it

                    📱 Internet

Wi-Fi works in cafes, hotels and entertainment venues. There may be problems with him at home. For example, nominally there was Wi-Fi in our apartment, but in fact it was constantly turned off. At the same time, the speed was also very low.

Several mobile operators operate on the island with favorable rates for mobile Internet. The most popular operator is Orange. His SIM cards are sold in supermarkets and post offices for €10-15⁣ (R740-1110). Money is credited to the account. To purchase a SIM card, you will need a passport.

Renting a mobile router with 4G will cost from 6 €⁣ (444 R) per day. This is convenient if you are traveling with a group. 10 devices can be connected to the Internet at the same time, the router works almost anywhere on the island and without speed limits.

                    🍯 Souvenirs

Any souvenir shop in Tenerife sells candlesticks, boxes, ashtrays and magnets made from solidified lava. Prices start from 1 €⁣ (74 R).

Another popular souvenir is a jar of honey collected from the Tajinaste-rojo plant. These red flowers grow only in the Canary Islands. Honey is considered healing and has a unique taste – I liked it. On average, a 400 g jar costs 5 €⁣ (370 R).

If you like sauces, I advise you to bring “mojo” – a traditional Canarian sauce based on olive oil with the addition of spices, herbs and herbs. Locals season this sauce with almost everything they eat. A set of jars with different flavors costs from 5 €⁣ (370 R).

                    ⚠️ Safety Rules

In general, Tenerife has a safe and friendly atmosphere, but there are petty thieves in popular resorts. When you leave the car, I advise you to put all things in the trunk. Insurance will not cover broken glass if someone is attracted to your jacket or iPhone charger.
