Rescuers evacuated the residents of houses even before the storm hit, so no one was hurt by the giant waves.
Read us on:
The Canary Islands are in the grip of a violent storm. In Tenerife, hurricane winds raised huge waves that literally washed away the balconies of an apartment building on the coast. Video posted on Facebook. nine0006
The strength of the waves can be judged by the fact that they reached the third floors. The region’s emergency services evacuated hundreds of people from three municipalities, STORMnews.ru reports. Local media report no serious injuries. Currently, the weather is getting better, the wind and waves off the coast are subsiding.
And the bad weather brought snowfalls to the Atlantic coast of the USA. The ice storm has already claimed the lives of eight people, hundreds more were left without electricity. Now the bad weather is deepening in the center of the country. 30cm snowdrifts are expected in some states, according to the weather service. nine0020

Very good
Excellent breakfast buffet. Can provide gluten free bread and cakes for breakfast upon request. Fruit, scrambled eggs, good spread.
Food choices at the pool bars could not meet gluten free needs. The spa, which is well advertised as part of the hotel, has an additional cost of 45€ per day. Children are only allowed on Sundays. nine0003

Properly organized space: a hotel for 2000 people, but there is enough of everything (seats in restaurants, by the pool, on the patio). Quiet and comfortable; convenient that you can pay for everything with their local debit card. Close to the dunes, close to inexpensive local buses, there are shops, the rooms are clean, shampoo-towels are put without a reminder. The food is tasty. I liked it … And it is also gratifying that during this story with the volcano, the hotel guest relations worked to the fullest, as for itself. calling both the airport and the airline (we did not have a travel agency). nine0003
Beach towels for any period of stay are given two per person, and they are changed only for euros, and not free of charge, as is usually the case. The Internet works for money and is slow, and since there was volcanic chaos, this is unpleasant. There are no Russians at all (6 people per hotel), and again, in the event of force majeure, this isolation from “our own” turned out to be not a plus, as usual, but a minus.

Cozy, comfortable and quiet – this is probably the dream of every vacationer. All this is embodied in him. nine0003
All pools with chlorinated water, chlorinated to such an extent that all living things near the pools die. Many people like it, but looking closely at the plants you notice the detrimental effect of proximity to the pools. Spent one day at the pools, did not like it. For this reason, they rested, sunbathed and swam in the ocean near the sand dunes. Poor variety of cuisine and dishes.

Excellent hotel. Great staff. Excellent food. Location near the ocean, not far from the bus stop (for traveling to neighboring towns). Services for every taste. There was even one single (and the only Russian in the entire hotel :)) Russian-speaking waiter Vitaliy. Thanks to him for his recommendations about the choice of food in restaurants. At check-in, they paid only for what they drank, for wine. Not any rip-offs. We have the warmest memories of the rest on the island. nine0003

an amazingly beautiful hotel, so powerful and very impressive, beautiful gardens with many cozy corners. everything is arranged in such a way that you don’t have to lie with the whole hotel at one pool, there are several of them and very cozy areas are made, giving the impression that there are very few people in the hotel. everything is very tasty – huge buffet restaurants – a full choice for breakfast and dinner, I liked everything very much. look at it on google earth and you will see everything! nine0003
lack of soundproofing, for example – they were sick and had to stay in the room for several days, and so – when the staff was cleaning upstairs – they banged and moved the furniture so much that for an hour I wanted to shoot myself. there are marble floors and any movement of furniture on them is heard like a roar. therefore, in my opinion, the main drawback of the hotel is that the staff does not clean quietly, they must do it almost silently – and they all throw and rattle, and if you decide to sleep during the day – this is unrealistic! in general, of course, in 2 stars it’s even worse – they don’t rattle and hit the walls with a mop, but they also speak at the top of their voices and laugh out loud among themselves. such are the features of the local temperament that make it very difficult for not so temperamental people with small children to relax. nine0003

The winter of 1941–42 is known as the coldest European winter of the 20th Century. The temperature was much below normal from the beginning of January until the end of March 1942. Blockings and cut-off lows were frequent, particularly during January and February 1942.
The role of quasi-stationary waves during this winter has been studied by decomposing the 500-mb geopotential height data in a low-pass, filtered, quasi-stationary part and a traveling part. The phase of the quasi-stationary wave was such that a ridge was present over the eastern Atlantic and a trough over western Russia throughout most of the winter. As a result, the majority of migratory cyclones that approached Europe from the west were steered either south toward the Mediterranian or north of Scandinavia.
The synoptic course of events during an outbreak of unusually cold air from the northeast at the end of January 1942 is described in some detail. Some comments are given on how the severe winter weather affected the war in the USSR.

Winter weather in Germany
Winter weather in Germany
Germany is characterized by the presence of a temperate continental climate, which means that the winters here are quite warm, comfortable, the average air temperature in the daytime is + 1 ° C, and the summer here is warm, but not hot, on average + 22 + 25 ° C. From time to time, Germany is captured by cyclones from the Arctic, then the air temperature in winter can drop to -10-15 ° C, the presence of Arctic air suggests a decrease in air temperature, as well as a cold piercing wind. Such cyclones are temporary and rare. The Atlantic acts favorably on the northern regions of Germany, so here the average air temperatures in the winter season are much higher than in other regions of the country. The east of the country is dominated by a continental climate, with much colder winter temperatures below freezing, so averages can drop as low as -20°C.
The warmest months according to meteorological observations are July and August, as the average temperature is around +19+22°C. During the summer months in the east of Germany, temperatures of up to +30°C can be observed. Germany is not uncommon to be at the mercy of cyclones, so the phenomenon of precipitation is not uncommon here throughout the year. In the spring months, after a few warm days, cold and even frost can return. As for precipitation, most of it falls in the summer. In mountainous areas, the air temperature is always several degrees lower than in the rest of the country, and there is much more precipitation here.

The actual nearshore temperatures may vary by several degrees and this can also be heavily affected by weather. Strong winds can cause cold, deep waters to replace the surface waters that had been warmed by the sun, and heavy rain can also reduce the temperature of the sea surface temperature as well.

Why measure sea surface temperatures (SST) in Puerto de Santiago?
The ocean covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, and scientists record the sea surface temperature (SST) of locations such as Puerto de Santiago because they want to understand and learn how the ocean communicates with the atomosphere of Earth.
SST is one measure that provides information on the global climate, and it can be used to predict the weather in Puerto de Santiago as well as atmospheric model simulations and to study marine ecosystems in the area.
Data source and citation
Raw data for the calculations made to find the sea surface temperature in Puerto de Santiago comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and their 1/4° daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature.
The water temperature data is constructed by combining observations from different platforms (satellites, ships, buoys, and Argo floats) on a regular global grid. A spatially complete sea surface temperature map is then built by interpolating to fill in gaps in the data.

Tenerife is an amazing place to visit and we always recommend taking the time to explore the island and discover its natural beauty. The reason why Tenerife is such an amazing destination in our opinion is that it has something to offer for everyone: you can sunbathe in Tenerife even in winter, it can also be a hiker’s paradise, it offers plenty of things to do with kids and surfers will be able to take advantage of the powerful swells of the Atlantic.

How to make the most of your time in Tenerife
This depends on how much time you have on the island.
You can check out our article with suggested Tenerife itineraries, depending on how much time you’ll be staying on the island. We usually advise at least one week, but ideally, 10 – 14 days would allow you to relax and visit some places as well.
Can you visit Tenerife without a car?
Yes, you can.
Although we usually rent a car in Tenerife to move around the island faster, it is possible to get around Tenerife without a car and still see a lot of places and do a lot of things.
You have several options to move around Tenerife without a car:
Titsa buses (public transport)
Taxi (can be expensive for long distances, but reasonable to move around the resorts in the south)
Tours and excursions
Move around Tenerife using the bus system
The bus company in Tenerife is called Titsa.
You can buy tickets from the bus driver, or if you plan to do several trips around Tenerife by bus you can buy the Ten+ card where you can charge money and use it to pay for trips (although the card initially costs € 2, it will be cheaper to pay using the Ten+ than paying the driver for individual tickets each time).
Recently Titsa also introduced tourist travel cards, so you can get a Day TravelCard for € 10 and a 7 Day TravelCard for € 50, which would allow you to take unlimited bus trips around Tenerife in the specified period of validity.
You can buy the Ten+ card and the Tourist Travel cards straight from the airport.

Where to stay in Tenerife if you don’t rent a car
The good thing about not renting a car while in Tenerife is that you don’t have to worry about parking, which can be difficult in some places.
But if you want to move Tenerife around by bus, we recommend staying in one of these resorts:
Los Cristianos
Costa Adeje
Puerto de la Cruz
Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are both located in the south of Tenerife, which would be the better option for the winter months, when the Canary Islands are the warmest destination in Europe that you can visit.
In our opinion, Los Cristianos has better and more bus connections with the rest of the island, so Los Cristianos would be our top choice when looking for a place to stay. Los Cristianos has a very large bus station and it’s easy to catch a bus to almost anywhere in Tenerife. Los Cristianos also has nice beaches, lots of restaurants and is well connected with the other resorts like Playa de Las Americas – you can either walk or take the bus.
Puerto de la Cruz is another good option, especially if you want to explore more of the north of Tenerife or do some hiking. Puerto de la Cruz has good bus connections with Santa Cruz, La Laguna, La Orotava and you can easily visit many beautiful places in Tenerife North.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, is also a good place to be if you want to explore Tenerife without a car. Especially if you’re staying in Tenerife for a longer period of time, like if you’re here to work remotely and explore the island in your free time, Santa Cruz is the best place to stay because it has a huge bus hub (Intercambiador de Transportes de Santa Cruz de Tenerife) which has connections with all the major places on the island and it’s easy to just hop on a bus and go somewhere new every day.
Visit Tenerife with guided tours and excursions
View of Mt Teide – photo taken while on the sunset tour with Teide by Night
If you really want to relax and not worry about planning anything, excursions and tours are the easiest way of visiting Tenerife without a car.
The good thing about Tenerife is that you have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to guided tours and excursions, but the one thing we recommend not missing out on is visiting Mt Teide.
We don’t recommend trying to visit the national park using the public bus because you will waste a lot of time and you won’t be able to see as many spots as with a tour.
Other excursions to help you see more of Tenerife
Loro Parque
Especially if you’re traveling with kids you might want to take a trip to Loro Parque, as they have a ticket option that includes the bus trip to Puerto de la Cruz and the park is really worth an entire day.
Take an island tour
Go on a tour to see some of the most iconic places in Tenerife: Los Gigantes cliffs, El Medano beach and the Candelaria Basilica.
Go on a hike in the mountains of Teno Rural Park

If you change your mind and you decide to rent a car while in Tenerife, take a look at the post where we show you our favourite drives around the island.
If you are traveling to Tenerife, it is most likely that you do not have a car to move from one place to another autonomously. You will get off the plane at one of the two airports on the island and you will have to find out how to get out of there and how to organize your activities according to the different available means of transport.
Well, so that it does not become an odyssey and a waste of time trying to find the option that suits you, today we tell you everything about how to move in Tenerife if you do not have your own car.
Before starting, in case you did not know, and so as not to be caught by surprise: there are no buses in the Canary Islands. But it is no big deal. It is not that there is no public transport in the Islands and you can only walk, ride a bike or go by car if you are lucky. Buses in the Canary Islands are called guaguas, and in Tenerife they are painted in a very characteristic green colour.
Having made this clear, how can you move in Tenerife?
Public transport:
guaguas and tram
Public bus service in Tenerife connects the whole island with more than 160 lines covering the metropolitan area and rural areas, thus virtually approaching every corner. They are green vehicles, the corporate color of TITSA (Interurban Transport of Tenerife), and they are part of the everyday landscape of all the inhabitants.
Catch the bus is the cheapest transport option, although depending on the distance you travel the price may be a bit more expensive (a ticket in cash from Puerto de la Cruz to the south of the island is around 15 Euros).
If you choose to travel with TITSA, we recommend you to buy travel cards to get reasonable discounts. An example to give you an idea of what the price of a one-way trip is: going from Puerto de la Cruz to the capital will cost you 5.25 Euros if you pay in cash, but 3.45 Euros if you do it with a travel card.
Although during the early morning there are hardly any services, in the early hours you will find buses that can take you to the most emblematic places of the island every half hour or, at most, every hour.
You can go by bus to El Teide National Park, to the beaches in the south, to Loro Parque, to Siam Park, to La Laguna and Santa Cruz, and to all the charming villages in the north of the island.
However, if you are going to move around the metropolitan area and if you are going to visit the beautiful streets of La Laguna and know the capital of Tenerife, then it may be more convenient to use the tram. It is somewhat slower than the bus, but it connects the university city with Santa Cruz interchange and you can take one every five minutes during the day.
Its price? Only 1.35 Euros for a one-way trip, and you have a wide variety of options to buy travel cards that suit your needs and obtain discounts.
White taxis in Tenerife
Yes, as a curiosity, all taxis are white on the island. And if you choose them as a means of transport they take you wherever you want, just as if you were moving in your own car.
Advantages? A taxi picks you up on time, takes you to the door of the place you want to visit and, if you wish, even picks you up when you are finished. Disadvantages? Well, if you are worried about money and you do not want your trip to become more expensive with day-to-day expenses, it might not be the best choice because it is not a cheap option.
You can set a price with the driver before starting the journey or the taximeter will be responsible for calculating the price of your trip based on the taxi fares. With this information you can make some estimates:
Price per kilometre: 0.55-0.63 Euros
Minimum fare: 3.15-3.45 Euros
Price per hour of waiting: 15,05 Euros
There are also different supplements that may make the final price a little higher (special days, pick-up or arrival at airports and ports or the use of the radio-taxi service).
As we told you, if you have a small budget, you may discard this option, but if you are worried about comfort, speed, or even if you go as a group and can spread expenses, travel to Tenerife in a white taxi (or use this service on time) It has many advantages.
Car hire and scheduled trips
The proposals to move around the island either by rental car or by your own car are very similar, so we will not go into this topic. It is interesting if you already know that you will go from one place to another all the time and you just need to rent it (a simple task at the airport) and use the GPS on your mobile phone. Let’s go!
But car, public buses or taxis are not everything, because there are many scheduled trips including transportation from a specific point to the must-see places of Tenerife.
You can explore Tenerife by bus and visit the National Park, the low island, the south… or go round the island in one day. You can also book night excursions or routes to discover the nature of the area without having to worry about transportation.
Prices vary depending on several factors, but you will probably be able to do some of these excursions from around 30 Euros.
Alternative means of transport
And if you are a sports lover, you may be interested to know that you can also visit some routes of the island by bike, but it is not a means of transportation in itself, but rather a leisure activity to get to know Tenerife from another point of view.
Now it is your turn to decide: green buses, white taxis? Any other option?
how to get around Spain cheaply?
We are going on a trip to Spain. And in order not to go broke from transportation costs, we have compiled a detailed manual on budget travel around the country. Local low-cost airlines, buses, trains, car rental or search for fellow travelers – we analyze all possible options. Save to bookmarks!
BY PLANE
Air is the easiest way to travel long distances: almost any flight within Spain will take no more than an hour. Often this is not only the fastest, but also, thanks to local low-cost airlines, quite a budget transport. In addition, this is practically the only way to get to the islands, for example, Mallorca, Ibiza or Tenerife.
Spain’s main low-cost airlines
Vueling
One of the main Spanish low-cost carriers with an extensive domestic flight network based in Barcelona. It is convenient to select directions and prices on the route map: for example, they offer to get from Barcelona to Malaga for € 40, and from Valencia to Bilbao – for € 42. By the way, there is a chance to grab these tickets and much cheaper: the company quite often arranges pleasant sales – follow the information on the website of the low-cost airline.
Ryanair
From Barcelona to Seville or from Valencia to Santander, your favorite low-cost carrier offers many flights within Spain, including to the islands (all routes are here). At the time of preparation of the material, a ticket from Madrid to Mallorca, for example, could be grabbed for a fabulous € 2.43, and from Barcelona to Ibiza for € 10. Keep your finger on the pulse – check the prices here.
Volotea
This low cost airline doesn’t have as many domestic flights in Spain as its competitors, but it often has sales. The best way to find cheap tickets is here. For example, it is offered to fly from Malaga to Bilbao for €15 (in July), and from Santander to Seville for €26 (in October).
Iberia Express
The democratic subsidiary of the national carrier Iberia is based in Madrid and flies short and medium haul. The price tag for domestic flights starts from €30-40, though not for all dates.
Life hack.
If you can’t find the perfect flight from your city, check the nearest airports. For example:
instead of the main airport of Barcelona – El-Prat: Barcelona Girona and Barcelona Reus;
instead of Seville – Jerez airport;
The airports of Malaga and Granada, as well as Alicante and Murcia are relatively close.
BY TRAIN
Spain has an excellent rail network. Most flights are operated by the national company Renfe.
The AVE is the fastest (and most expensive) train in Europe. Such a train overcomes 600 km between Madrid and Valencia in 2.5 hours, but it can cost about € 50-70. For this money, you will ride not only with the breeze, but also with comfort: the carriages are spacious, soft seats, kintso (in Spanish, of course) and music in free headphones.
AVE pride themselves on being punctual. If the train is five minutes late, you will receive a full refund of the ticket price.
To the annoyance of all budget travelers, AVEs have replaced most of the cheap trains. To save money, you will have to transfer to the bus and spend twice as much time on the road.
Life hack.
If you buy a train ticket at the last moment, it can be cheaper than a plane.
Electric trains Cercanias run on suburban routes. Tickets for them can be bought in advance online or at special kiosks at the station. The cost depends on the distance, but rarely exceeds €5. It is convenient to check the cost of tickets in different directions on aggregator sites, for example, movelia.es , but it is better to buy directly on the websites of carriers.
Major bus carriers in Spain
ALSA
The largest bus company in the country with the widest network of routes that has bought out a whole bunch of smaller companies in the last ten years. In addition to domestic flights in Spain, the carrier also has international flights – almost throughout Europe. You can find a list of all destinations here, and here is a handy price calendar.
Socibus
Socibus operates flights from Madrid to Andalusia and the Basque Country. Tickets from the capital to Cadiz, Cordoba or Seville will cost € 25-30. The purchase system is not the most convenient and only in Spanish, but the prices are on average lower than those of ALSA.
Avanza
Another company worthy of your attention: an impressive list of destinations and reasonable prices. For example, tickets from Valencia to Madrid can be taken for € 13 – several times cheaper than a train. In addition to regular intercity flights, it offers transfers to Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Some bus routes are not only noticeably cheaper than trains, but they are not inferior in speed. See for yourself*:
Madrid – Bilbao
Train: € 50, travel time – 5 hours
Bus: € 30-50, travel time – 4 hours 15 minutes
Madrid – San Sebastian
Train: € 20-50, travel time – 5-7 hours
Bus: € 35, travel time – 5-6. 5 hours
Madrid – Granada
Train: € 70, travel time – 4 hours
Bus: € 20, travel time 4.5 hours
*Prices are approximate. Check your dates on the official websites of carriers.
BY CAR
Rent a car
Road trip gives you the freedom and opportunity to see what lies aside from the usual routes. Keep in mind that Spain is full of toll roads, which can increase the cost of your trip significantly. In addition, you will face the problem of parking – you will have to master the subtle art of parking like a local.
You can compare car rental prices in a particular city from different rental companies using aggregators like rentalcars.com , but it’s better to interact directly with companies – it’s more reliable.
If you decide to explore the country by car, read our detailed manual on how to rent a car.
Search for fellow travelers
The topic of search for fellow travelers in Spain is well developed – you can easily find a car to almost any city or town. But in this case, the trip is unlikely to be planned in advance: many drivers publish ads at the last moment. The option of driving someone else’s car reduces the burden not only on your wallet, but also on the environment. Here is a list of the main services used by locals:
BlaBlaCar is the most famous service for finding fellow travelers, which also works in Spain.
Amovens is another popular service where you can also rent a car.
Amicoche is a completely free ride-hunting system: no commissions will be charged from you. Please note that you will have to pay the driver in cash.
Compartir is a local service with a large base of loyal users.
Life hack.
The cost of a trip in the same direction for different drivers can vary significantly, and often the point here is not greed at all. Some drivers ask for less because they are in no hurry and decide to avoid toll roads, while others value speed but charge a higher price. Specify the route in advance.
Hitchhiking
Spain is not the best country for hitchhiking. Experienced travelers warn that the average travel speed here will be significantly lower than in other European countries. Drivers stop reluctantly, those who catch the car at gas stations are more likely to be lucky. You can read more about hitchhiking in Spain here.
FOR YOUR TWO
The cheapest way to get around any country is on foot. The Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James, passes through Spain. The most popular pilgrimage route is visited by pilgrims from all over the world to venerate the relics of the saint. However, in our time, the Way of Jacob has ceased to be religious and has become the main walking route in Spain, having managed not to lose its mysticism and near-philosophical meaning. For inspiration, you can read a story about such a trip.

Transport in Spain: airports, railways, car rental, public transport
Like any other EU country, Spain has a modern and well-equipped transport system. In terms of high-speed rail transportation (AVE trains), namely in terms of the length of the network and the pace of construction of new lines, the Iberian state is in the world leaders!
Airports in Spain
Spain has several dozen international airports. The largest of them: Barajas (Barajas) in Madrid and El Prat (El Prat) in Barcelona. Other airports serve mostly resorts in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. These are: the airport in Palma de Mallorca (almost 23 million passengers in 2011) in the Balearic Islands, Malaga airport on the Costa del Sol, Alicante airport, El Atlet, serving the entire Costa Blanca, and the most significant airport in the Canary Islands, Tenerife Sur (South ).
The main passenger carrier is the national flag carrier Iberia, which has also launched its own low-cost routes since March 2012 (Iberia Express). The most famous low-cost airline in Europe, the Irish company Ryanair, also owns a significant market share, often allowing itself to dictate terms to regional and even—horror—national authorities.
Spanish Railways
Spain’s railway network (over 15,000 km) is perhaps the cheapest in Europe. However, this does not affect the level of comfort. To travel long distances, it is best to use the comfortable Talgo high-speed trains that run between cities far from each other.
They have carriages for smokers and non-smokers, there are TVs, electronic scoreboards with a running line announcing the next stop, buffets are open.
High-speed trains AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) trains link Madrid with Seville and Malaga, as well as with Valladolid, Zaragoza, Leida and Barcelona and Valencia. Starting from the spring of 2014, a high-speed service has been opened between Barcelona, Paris and Marseille. New branches are constantly being built in Spain itself: for example, in 2015 it is planned to build 1000 km of tracks that will connect Madrid with the capitals of the provinces.
The speed of high-speed trains is already impressive: trains sometimes reach speeds of up to 300 km/h and the journey between Madrid and, for example, Seville (470 km long) takes only about 2.5 hours. Prices, however, are also the same: often a flight on a low-cost Iberia flight will cost much cheaper than a trip on the AVE bird train. Savings, of course, will be eaten by a taxi … but you can use public transport, right?
Most of the Spanish railways are managed by the state company RENFE (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Espaсoles), there are a number of local companies (such as the same Catalan FGC).
Public transport
Urban public transport in Spain is the most democratic way to travel in space. In large cities, it is represented by metro, buses, trams, taxis, and a network of suburban trains.
The fastest and most convenient way to travel in Madrid and Barcelona is, of course, the metro, which has a very long length and connects not only all areas of the cities, but also their immediate suburbs. Barcelona metro has 9th operating lines, in Madrid – 11 lines (each marked with its own color and number).
Tickets can be purchased at any station at the ticket office and vending machine. It is more profitable to buy a ticket for 10 trips at once – a travel card that is valid not only in the metro, but also in any other type of public transport (bus, tram, train).
City buses operate from 6.00 to 24.00 with an interval of 10-15 minutes. And strictly follow the schedule. One-time tickets are sold by the driver (for cash, without change) and they must be punched at the entrance to the bus. It is more profitable to buy a card for 10 trips, it is composted, like a single ticket. The fare is the same for any distance. There are also combined metro and bus tickets, unlimited metro and bus tickets for 1, 3, 5 days. Such tickets are sold at kiosks, railway stations, in the lobbies of metro stations
In large cities, night buses run from the city center in various directions with an interval of 30 minutes. Tickets are sold only from the driver. Tourist buses run in many cities. They will take you to the main places of interest. In Barcelona, for example, there are Tibibus, Tombbus, Bus Turistik buses that will take you to most of the most interesting places in the city. You can get off at any stop, see the sights and after 30 minutes take the same bus and continue the trip.
Taxi and car rental in Spain
Spanish taxis are relatively inexpensive (if you are willing to fork out a dozen or two euros without thinking). In different regions of Spain, they are usually painted white (but not in Barcelona – they are black and yellow there!), But they have a diagonal stripe that is different for each region, but they have the well-known “Taxi” sign on the roof. If the car is free, the driver puts up a sign with the inscription “Libre” – free. In urban taxis, payment is made in accordance with the meter readings.
There are unmetered taxis on the coast of Spain, and before you get in, you need to ask the driver how much he will request. At night, the cost of a taxi increases significantly. Baggage is also paid. It is customary for the driver to leave a tip or simply round up the meter reading.
To rent a car in Spain, the following is required: the tenant’s age is at least 23 years old, international driving license, driving experience of at least 2 years, insurance, passport. It is better to rent a car from a large company: firstly, there is a greater choice of good cars, and secondly, you can return the car anywhere where there is a representative office of this company. But you have to pay by credit card
Rental price for 1 day includes car class, VAT 16% and fuel. When renting in smaller (usually local, firms) you can pay in cash, rent is 2-3 times cheaper, a passport is not required. In this case, a deposit of at least $300 must be paid, the car must be returned to where it was taken, and the choice of car brand is limited by the company’s capabilities.
Spanish roads and traffic regulations
Spanish highways can be identified by the first letters in front of the number. AP (autopista), for example, means a toll highway, A (autovia) – free, N – also a free route, but used mainly by trucks (which, without special permission, the path to the A-route is “ordered”). The letters B, C or V are mainly used to designate junctions or roads connecting two alignments. It should be borne in mind that the paid AP track is always duplicated by the same free one (A).
The amount of payment (for toll highways) is indicated in a conspicuous place. There are two payment options: by credit card (at the checkpoint marked Automatic) or in cash (checkpoint marked Manual).
Maximum speed within built-up areas 50 km/h, outside them 90 km/h, on expressways 100 km/h, on motorways (A and AP) 120 km/h. As for the rules of the road, in addition to the above speed limit, you need to remember that you always need to carry a license with you, a registration certificate (permiso de circulacion del vehicul) and an insurance coupon (carta verde del seguro), the car must have a sign of nationality and two (!) emergency stop signs.

General information
Tenerife South International Airport is the largest airport in the Spanish resort island of Los Rodeos. It is located in the southernmost part of the island, 61 km from the center of the city of the same name.
Initially, the airport, built in 1978 and being an addition to the first airport of Los Rodeos, was named after Queen Sophia, the ruler of the country. But already in the early 90s, the airfield was renamed, and it became officially known as Tenerife International Airport.
Today, Tenerife South is the most developed airport on the island, serving up to 9 million passengers a year and being its main transport hub (almost 90% of all aircraft arriving at Los Rodeos pass through the airport).
Based airlines
The Spanish airline Air Europa is based at Tenerife South Airport.
Services and facilities
At Tenerife South Airport, all passengers can comfortably wait for their flight. In addition to the usual waiting rooms, there are also special VIP lounges. Anyone can get here, of course, provided that he can pay for all the services. The VIP-halls have cozy rooms with comfortable furniture, satellite TV, high-speed Internet and European newspapers.
Passengers with children can comfortably stay in the mother and child rooms. Here, in addition to game rooms, there is a kitchen, a dining room, a shower room and a medical center, where anyone in need can apply for free. In order to visit the room for free, parents must get to the med. paragraph a certificate stating that the child is under 7 years old. If the child is older or simply does not want to go for help, you will have to pay for the stay.
Transport
There are two ways to get from the airport to the city:
1. By taxi. The taxi rank, where there are cars of both taxi companies and private cabbies, is located near the exit from the arrivals area, in a specially separated section of the passenger parking lot. The cost of the trip for all drivers is fixed, and is 1 euro 10 cents per kilometer.
2. By public transport. Public transport in Tenerife South Airport is represented by regular buses, which can take you to the center of Tenerife, as well as to almost any major resort.
Ship Island, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, is located 12 miles off the coast of Mississippi. Actually, there are two islands—West Ship Island and East Ship Island—but the east/west distinction has only been around a relatively short time. In 1969, Hurricane Camille literally cut the island in two, so now there is a channel between them. Together, the east and west islands span about 7 miles between their eastern and western extremes. However, distance from north to south is typically half a mile or less.
West Ship Island is accessible by passenger ferry from Gulfport, where a boardwalk leads to the main beach on the south shore of the island. From the main beach, you’ll need to head east at least a mile (or maybe more, depending on the number of textiles) before taking everything off. There won’t be a big crowd of nudists to greet you. Nude bathers have plenty of room to spread out, and the limited capacity and schedule of the ferry service ensures that crowds will never be too large, especially on remote parts of the beach. You may find only a handful of nude sunbathers on summer weekdays, with higher numbers of nudists on weekends. Rangers tend not to bother nudists in this area, but, if you see a ranger, it is still a good idea to suit up until he or she is gone. Furthermore, you should absolutely be discreet if you see textiles approaching. Remember, Mississippi is an extremely conservative state, and you do not want to cause a complaint, especially since you’ll probably have to share a ferry ride back with the prudes who balked.
Ship Island is a day-trip destination only. Overnight camping is not allowed. Restrooms and a snack bar are available on the ferry, which remains docked for the duration of the day trip. The land-based restrooms and snack bar were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and have yet to be rebuilt.

19 of the Best Greece Nude Beaches // World Beach Guide
Whilst naturism is fairly commonplace throughout the islands and beaches of Greece it is only officially endorsed in a few specifically designated spots. That said, with over 200 islands, each with any number of remote beaches and coves there is no shortage of beautiful un-official nudist beaches to choose from.
Attitudes can be quite conservative on the Greek islands which goes some way to explaining the lack of officially sanctioned naturist beaches. However, by and large the authorities are not at all interested in rounding up naturists. In fact going topless is pretty much universal throughout the islands. And provided you aren’t front and centre on one of the popular family beaches you probably won’t raise too many eyebrows.
Practically all of the main islands in Greece have at least one or two nude beaches. Although these won’t be officially recognised many have been established for decades without incident. In fact on the island of Poutsonissi public nudity is illegal, but the law also states that to make an arrest the officer must also be naked. Suffice to say no one has ever been arrested!

Red Beach // Crete
Red beach, so named because of the pinkish hue of the sand, is located just south of the better known beach of Matala. Both were firm favourites on the 1960s and 70s hippy trail and whilst Matala may have gone mainstream, Red beach still retains some of its laid back credentials.
It’s a lovely little beach set at the base of arid hillsides and limestone… read more »
Plaka beach // Naxos
Random_fotos
Generally regarded as the best beach on Naxos, Plaka is a huge stretch of fine white sand backed by low sand dunes. The waters of the bay at Plaka are calm and clear with a definite green tint.
Whilst there are areas of the beach with the familiar straw umbrellas and sun-beds, much of the beach still retains a relatively wild feel and is largely unspoilt.
Voted the third best beach in Greece, and ranking in the top ten of a Europe-wide poll, Agios Prokopios beach remains one of the most popular beaches on the island of Naxos as much for its innate beauty as for its proximity to the island’s main town of Chora (Naxos town) and the ferry port.
Just a short drive, bus ride, cycle or stroll from Naxos… read more »
Glyfada Beach // Corfu

One of Corfu’s longer runs of beach, Glyfada Beach can be found on the island’s west coast. Here low dunes and grasses slip down towards the sea before being halted in their progress by a depth of beautiful flat golden sand – a relatively rare occurrence on Corfu’s shingle-strewn beaches.
Generally attracting a younger crowd, it can be quite noisy and is not a beach to… read more »
The person who named Paradise beach was probably inspired by the soft golden sand and warm crystalline waters. Straw umbrellas and loungers adorn the waterside and there are plenty of beach-side cafes and bars. Possibly not the best family beach in the area but the nightlife is very lively.

Perissa Beach // Santorini
Norbert Nagel / Wikimedia Commons
Lined from end to end with sun loungers and umbrellas of thatched palm leaves, Perissa Beach is renowned for its unusual black sands. They are the result of volcanic eruptions from Mesa Vouno Mountain thousands of years ago, and create an impressive contrast with the whitewashed buildings and deep blue sea around it.
Situated on the southeast coast of Santorini, the black sands continue into the… read more »

Matala Beach // Crete
The fishing village of Matala was just that until the 1960s. However, since then, like many other things, it hasn’t been quite the same! It was then that Matala became a popular destination for hippy travellers attracting the likes of Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell (who even wrote a song about it) in its heyday.
Many of these hippies camped out in the complex… read more »

Nestled between jagged white cliffs and seas with strong currents is Seitan Limania Beach. The name is derived from the Turkish for “Satan’s harbor” due to the trechearous conditions encountered by early mariners here. Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and
Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different
then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!

There were lots of stories in the media about the British Prime Minister David Cameron being on a holiday in Lanzarote for Easter 2016 for the second time or lots of movies being shot on the island, bringing a lot of attention to how unique and beautiful Lanzarote’s landscape is. And very often wondering as to Where is Lanzarote?
Where is Lanzarote?
Lanzarote is an island in the Canary Islands, Spain. It lies in the Atlantic Ocean, it is situated towards the north east of the Canary Islands and just 125kms away from the coast of Africa.
How is the Weather in Lanzarote?
Lanzarote is blessed with a glorious subtropical desert climate with an average temperature of 19°C along with an all year round sun. No matter which month you come to Lanzarote, you can enjoy a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight, isn’t that awesome?!!!!
About Lanzarote’s Landscape?
Lanzarote was born from the Canary volcanic hotspot 15 million years ago, which broke away from the African and Continental plates. The recent eruptions on the island happened between 1730 to 1736, which is now under the Timanfaya National Park. Lanzarote for this reason is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s volcanic terrain looks somewhat like that of mars, and so is unique with all shades of brown and ochre contrasting against the turquoise blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
Now that you know ‘Where is Lanzarote?’, it is good to know all the things to do in Lanzarote when you arrive. There are lots of Lanzarote Excursions you can enjoy, we have listed some of the popular picks for you:
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour is a highlight of North and South Lanzarote, making it one of the best trips in Lanzarote. Enjoy a glimpse of the Salt Pans of Janubio while you are on your way to watch the coastal waves hitting the huge rock formations of Los Hervidores, then the emerald green lagoon at El Golfo and reaching the Timanfaya National Park for a camel ride or to watch the geothermal experiments. A hearty lunch at the village of Macher Blanca will get you all excited to see the La Geria wine region, village of Haria, the valley of thousand palms and finally to the home of blind albino crabs amongst other species in the volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua.
Sand Dunes Fuerteventura: Lanzarote is just 40 minutes away from the beautiful island of Fuerteventura, and there is no better way to enjoy the carribean style beaches, its stunning sand dunes and pristine natural park than crossing the sea on a glass bottomed Catamaran. Have a memorable day trip to the island of Fuerteventura from Lanzarote for the price of one holiday.
Short South Tour: The Short South Tour is very popular with families with kids, since it is a short trip of the Timanfaya fire mountains, Timanfaya National Park, camel ride and lastly a visit to the emerald green lake at El Golfo, a remains of a volcanic crater, where you can look for Olivina stones or buy them as souvenirs to take back home.
I Love La Graciosa: The unspoilt island of La Graciosa is north of Lanzarote and in just 30 minutes by sea you can enjoy this quiet and luxurious island on a glass bottomed Catamaran. Enjoy water activities like snorkeling, kayaking at the bay of Playa Francesa, and swim or reach by boat at the Francesa beach to enjoy the beautiful golden sands without any crowds. Enjoy two islands at the cost of one holiday.
Teguise Market: The Teguise Market is open every Sunday and is one of the best places to bargain for souvenirs like crafts, local produce, aloe products, and much much more. Just one trip to the market is not enough.
Rancho Texas Animal Park: Rancho Texas is one place for both kids and adults, from watching various kinds of animals to swimming with the sea lions or enjoying the various shows or cooling down in the Splash Zone. There is something for everyone.
So ‘Where is Lanzarote’? It is a paradise on earth where you want to be on your next holiday, it is easily accessible by flights from the UK and Europe, just 4 hours or less from most destinations, so GET SET GO TO LANZAROTE.
Tias – The Town Of Aunts
Graham
TO VISIT
Tias is not widely known to visitors to Lanzarote and is generally just somewhere you pass through on the island’s main road, the LZ2. However, it is an important administrative centre and the municipality of Tías incorporates the largest of Lanzarote’s tourist resorts, Puerto del Carmen.
Formerly called Las Tias de Fajardo, meaning Farjado’s Aunts, the town was named in the late 1400s by Alonso Farjado, Governor of Gran Canaria, to honour his favourite maiden aunts, Francisca and Hernan. Lanzarote is still governed by the province of Gran Canaria.

There is evidence of a settlement here dating back to pre-Spanish days and for centuries the area was relatively poor and reliant on agriculture and fishing. The fortunes of the town changed in the 18th century, when six years of volcanic eruptions from 1730 to 1736 destroyed nine villages, and the most fertile land on the island, forcing whole communities to relocate, many of whom moved to Tias. With the growth in population and the increase in trade, the town became an important commercial centre.
Here’s some video shot in Tias:
This prosperity was fairly short lived as, with the growing importance of maritime trading, the port and new island capital of Arrecife became Lanzarote’s trading hub. Once again Tias became one of the poorer areas of the island.
However, with the dawn of the package holiday industry in the 1970s and the accessibility of air travel for ordinary people, the municipality’s stretch of coast called La Tiñosa with its golden sands was to become a huge attraction for those seeking year round sunshine. With the building of the first hotel and the subsequent surrounding urban growth, this coastal area was renamed, Puerto del Carmen.
With around 70% of Lanzarote’s tourist revenue centred in PDC, the town of Tias is now one of the most, if not the most, affluent on the island. In addition to this, a growing number of ex-pats are choosing to escape from the hustle and bustle of the resorts and experience the peaceful Canarian way of life while still being in easy reach of the beaches and nightlife.
Tías has retained an authentic island feel and life tends to move at a slow pace. The many bars and restaurants provide a warm welcome and traditional cooking and are lovely places to pass the time while, for us ex-pats, improving our Spanish.
There is also evidence of the cultural history of Tias. The sculpture of two wrestlers on a roundabout on the main avenida reflect the importance of the town within the sport of Canarian Wrestling which was, and in some areas still is the biggest sport in the Canary Islands.
The Municipal Theatre has regular exhibitions, events and concerts. The house of Portuguese author José Saramago is open to the public. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998 he lived in self-imposed exile in Tias until his death in 2010.
More and more visitors to Lanzarote are choosing to really explore the island and see what’s outside of the tourist resorts. The central location of Tias and the road and bus network makes it an ideal holiday base. There is a variety of accommodation in this delightful town, but you’ll need to book early!

Lanzarote, Spain – travel guide Planet of Hotels
Arrecife is the capital and largest city of the island, its cultural and financial center. Its name comes from the Spanish word “arrecife”, which translates as “reef” – apparently because the island is surrounded on all sides by huge coral colonies. Most of Arrecife is built up with snow-white houses – they look stunningly beautiful against the backdrop of volcanic mountains, ocean water and a piercing blue sky. Particularly attractive is the area of the salt lake Charo de San Gines, near which the main church of the city is built.
In the evenings, crowds of tourists gather here to take magnificent photos of this place at sunset. The main historical monuments of Arrecife are two fortresses built to protect against pirates. Castillo de San Gabriel – was erected by King Philip II on a small basalt island and is connected to the city by a drawbridge. The second bastion – Castillo de San Jose, is known for the fact that the Museum of Modern Art was opened within its walls. In addition, the Spinola Palace, built in the 18th century, is of interest. The coast of Arrecife is rather unusual – it is completely dotted with small reefs and islands formed by solidified lava.
Costa Teguise is the island’s second most important resort, but it has every chance to become a leader over time. It is located on the very shore of the ocean, just a 15-minute drive from the airport, and was specially built for tourists in the 70s of the last century. Its main feature is the relentless wind, which makes this resort very popular among surfers. In the heart of Costa Teguise is the decorative “fishing village” Pueblo Marinero, which contains all the main bars and restaurants of the city. On Friday evenings, a large market opens here for tourists, where they sell all sorts of things – souvenirs, clothes, jewelry and much more. There are no architectural monuments here – even the residence of the Spanish king Juan Carlos, located in the western part of the resort, looks quite modest and merges with the architectural concept of Costa Teguise. Despite the small selection of entertainment, tourists often come here. From here it is very convenient to get to the main natural attractions of Lanzarote – the Timanfaya National Park and the Cueva de los Verdes cave.
La Santa is a small coastal village on the northwest coast of Lanzarote. It is a favorite place for fans of water sports, but swimming here is not very convenient due to the very strong surf and the steep entrance to the water. This resort is not recommended for beginners in surfing, but experienced athletes will like the short and explosive waves of the coast. The best time for rest is the period from September to May, when moderately strong winds blow continuously. However, you can meet vacationers on the local coast all year round.
Punta Mujeres is a small village in the north of Lanzarote. The huge popularity of the resort was provided by the original lava pools of natural origin, filled with salt water. This stretch of coast, stretching for several kilometers, looks like a giant natural water park, surrounded by picturesque landscapes. The only reminders of civilization here are comfortable stairs installed on some stones for descending into the water, as well as artificial sunbathing areas. Two spacious pools are well protected from the ocean waves – next to them there is a bar where you can relax in the shade.
Arrieta is a tiny village in the northern part of the island with only about 300 inhabitants. It has become a very popular resort thanks to Playa de la Garita – a white sand beach, which is very unusual for the almost black volcanic coast of Lanzarote. In the high season, a lot of people rest here, including the inhabitants of the island. The most interesting attraction of the resort is a museum dedicated to the aloe vera plant, as well as cosmetic and medicinal products that are made on its basis.
Charco del Palo is a small village on the northeast coast. It was founded by German businessman Gregor Kaiser in 1970. Since about the mid-80s of the last century, this place has become popular among naturists. Now it is a modern and very closed resort with protected nudist beaches, comfortable bungalows and villas where outsiders cannot enter.
