Ashes from the Canary Islands “very unlikely” to affect Madeira

Ash from a volcano erupting in the Canary Islands (Spain) will not affect Maderia in the coming days, according to IPMA meteorologist María João Frade.

    At TPN/Lusa,
    in News, Europe ·

Ash from the Canary Islands is “very unlikely” to affect Madeira

“As for what is expected for the Madeira archipelago in the coming days, it is very unlikely, it is not impossible, but it is very unlikely that the volcanic ash that is now over the Canary Islands region will have impact on the Madeira archipelago,” said Maria João Frade of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The meteorologist explained that the forecast for Madeira in the coming days is a northerly or northeasterly wind, and since the Canary Islands are south of Madeira, it is “unlikely” that volcanic ash will reach the Portuguese islands, located less than 500 kilometers from La Palma , the Spanish island where the volcano that erupted on Sunday is located.

This forecast for Madeira is due to an anticyclone which is northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and which is “relatively intense” and “also relatively stationary” and “until at least the 23rd or 24th this anticyclone will be northwest of Iberian Peninsula,” added Maria João Frade.

“Therefore, it is unlikely to have a real impact on Madeira, unless there are very significant changes in these forecasts. Therefore, it is likely that it will not have any impact at all,” she stressed.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma (Canary Islands) began erupting on Sunday, and authorities expect 5,000 to 10,000 people to be evacuated from the most vulnerable areas.

With a population of 85,000, La Palma is one of the eight islands of the Canary Islands archipelago and is located 460 kilometers from the Portuguese island of Madeira.

The previous eruption on La Palma occurred in 1971 in Tenegua, in the south of the island, and lasted 24 days.

What happened on the flight of the tour operator TUI Russia to Madeira

The first flight from Moscow to Madeira, which was operated by Ural Airlines on February 20 at the request of the tour operator TUI Russia, did not go according to plan. The plane took off at 08:55 am from Zhukovsky airport and was scheduled to land in Funchal around noon local time, however, due to a storm, this did not work out and after 7 hours of flight, the pilots had to take the liner to the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands), located 465 km to the south is another hour on the road.

On board were both tourists and a group of travel agents – participants in the promotional tour, as well as representatives of the press. “Madeira did not accept us and five other flights due to terrible weather conditions. We circled over the island and went to Tenerife. We stayed in the Canary Islands for about 3 hours, the weather is fine, but they didn’t let us out of the plane, since Spain does not recognize Russian vaccines. But they brought sandwiches with water,” journalist Kirill Komarov wrote on Facebook.

The clarification about food appeared not by chance – there was no food on the flight, which was noted by many commentators, but the airline managed to agree on its delivery on board during an emergency landing.

It was assumed that after Tenerife the plane would go to the Portuguese island of Porto Santo. And from there, passengers will be taken by ferry to Madeira, located 40 km away. However, this option was not needed – at 18:56 local time (about 22:00 Moscow time) A321 “Ural Airlines” still landed safely in Funchal. The journey took 13 hours.

Some passengers took the flight hard: “I can’t put into words what I experienced yesterday. I sobbed the whole flight, all night. It was just awful,” one of the eyewitnesses told TourDom.ru. There are other reviews as well. For example, Nargiz Nazarova, a member of the Country of Tourism group, wrote: “Here’s what you need to tell about the first flight of the Urals to Madeira – they are heroes!” And travel agent Svetlana Sibiryakova shared a video upon arrival.

The Spanish media today published publications about the landing of Ural Airlines. In particular, Preferente.com writes: “The most severe storm in recent decades in northwestern Europe has forced pilots to work to the limit.

Loro Park and resort nature — Touristim

Back in the 19th century, the attraction of the resort area of Tenerife was not only exotic nature, but also the fact that it served as a vacation spot for wealthy visitors to the Canary Islands. Representatives of the cream of society came from all over the world to enjoy the exotic, feeling their involvement in the world of the elite. Nowadays, in social terms, everything is much simpler. But, the Spanish resort, as before, attracts many.

The island itself was formed on the slopes of a mountain that grew out of the sea during an eruption, which can already be called a unique attraction. Being the basis of life in this blessed land, the mountain predetermines its climate. The southern part of Tenerife has a dry and hot climate, while the northern half is mild and cool. If earlier the prices for holidays in the Canary Islands were affordable only for wealthy people, today tourists with average incomes come here. nine0003

The climate, which has no analogues in the world, has made it possible to grow various plants that cannot be combined in nature. Their appearance here is quite logical, as navigators throughout the ages have chosen Tenerife as a holiday destination. They brought with them a lot of seeds, which sprouted, firmly “setting up” here.

In Tenerife you can find dragon tree , which, alas, is not found anywhere else. The locals loved it so much that they chose it as a symbol of the archipelago. On the slopes of the volcano, as well as in its gorges, another, no less interesting plant grows, known as the Canarian pine. It survives even in volcanic rock or after fires. That’s really, really, the will to live! nine0011

One of the main attractions of Tenerife is the Teide Volcano e. In addition to the fact that it bears the honorary name of the highest mountain in Spain, it has an exotic landscape. Folds, stones of volcanic origin excite the minds, forcing them to fantasize about the themes of extraterrestrial civilizations.

But the sights of Tenerife are not limited to this. It is safe to say that whoever has not been to Ancient Mask has not seen the island. What is it? A small village located in the most inaccessible part of the island. Its inhabitants are not very willing to keep in touch with the world of civilization. The whole family structure, the whole life of its inhabitants has preserved its original appearance. nine0003

Due to the development of tourism, roads and suspension bridges are safe. But the steep descents and ascents make many feel like heroes. These feelings, combined with the impressions of the village, are so unforgettable that they remain for a long time. You can relax on the best of the eight islands of the Canaries, you can gain strength on the way back on the beach with the clearest water and magnificent scenery.

If it’s already talking about nature, then Loro Parque in Tenerife also deserves special mention. This is a man-made attraction, but it houses a huge collection of parrots from all over the world. They are tame and take part in organized shows along with dolphins. nine0011

Many of those who have visited Tenerife have discovered these birds. In addition, the walk itself through the park is very informative. Tigers and gorillas live in open enclosures, there are tunnels with sharks nearby, as well as caves with not at all scary bats.

At one time it is impossible to list all the sights of the mysterious and unique Tenerife. But one thing is known – whoever has been there at least once dreams of returning again.

Vilaflor has had a small chapel since the middle of the 16th century. In the middle of the 17th century, the church of St. Apostle Peter was built in its place. It was built in the Canarian style and has one nave in the shape of a Latin cross and coffered ceilings. Inside you will find an important religious image of Saint Peter dating from the middle of the 16th century. Next to the church is Temple of Santo Hermano Pedro , which is an object of pilgrimage for worshipers of this saint, who founded the Order of Bethlehem in Guatemala. The church and monastery of the same order were built on the site of the house where the saint’s parents lived. The church has a rectangular shape and consists of one nave, connected with the remains of the old structure of the building, from which stone portals have been preserved. Among residential architecture, it is worth highlighting the house of the Soler family , where the founder of the municipality lived. This building is a fine example of traditional 17th century Canarian architecture. Despite the fact that it was rebuilt several times, the very shape of the building in the shape of the letter G, a corridor with a portico and stone columns, a magnificent wooden entrance and an old winepress have been preserved. The building has a patio with a garden and living quarters where family members, servants and co-owners were housed.

Fantasy island gran canaria: I worked at Fantasy Island in early 80s – Review of Kasbah Shopping Center, Playa del Ingles, Spain

Here come the Vaccines. More or less. Rollouts, mutations, government bungling, speculation on post-vax transmissions, but also surprising immunization success rates in some places. All of which means we’re just starting to think about what’s next.

But after Brexit, the US Election, start of COVID etc. I’m done with the millions of armchair experts trying to out-clever each other. And the barrage of commentary by meme-lords the world over that follows.

Because all that ends up happening, is whatever happens. And how it actually feels and works… ? We’ll know when we get there. So no predictions from me. Just some Captain’s Log notes, Stardate 2021.

I decamped from Berlin to Gran Canaria just over a month ago. And I know… boo-hoo, you’re on an island. Fair enough. But take this as someone reporting back from a recon mission into semi-normal life. I thought it would be Fantasy Island.

Getting here, the first flight and airport were zombie apocalypse empty. But the connection was through a crowded Lisbon International. I had a mild panic attack from suddenly being around so many people. It was terrifying. And magnetic. Like a fire to warm myself by, but that I thought might burn me alive. I wanted to go home but instead, ate my feelings which were disguised egg tarts. On the connecting flight, me and the stranger next to me leaned away from each other, not out of politeness. Even though we’d both tested negative in the previous 72 hours, it was still, “Welcome Aboard Anxiety Airlines.”

Arriving here on the island and staying with friends, our first hugs were awkward. Willing. But cautious. Having actual conversations with other people in real life felt like being in a play. My ability to read body language was really rusty. I’d be fully in a conversation, then a thousand miles away, silently watching it from space.

At the first restaurant we went to, I kept waiting for the cops to arrive. It didn’t seem possible that we could sit down, take off our masks, and eat food together. When the waiter bumped my shoulder, I nearly jumped out of my chair. I lingered in the bathroom for a while, because it felt safe. Washing my hands, and wondering if I should wash my shirt where he’d touched it.

We went to the beach. I cried. Then we drank in a bar. Way too much. When I woke up the next day, I felt awful. Too much, of so much, after so long. My body and mind were overloaded. And then the guilt set in. “You don’t deserve to be here,” my Lower-Self chastized, “think of all your friends.” I felt like I’d stolen rations.

All I wanted was to be alone. And quiet. And alone. It took weeks for these kinds of feelings to pass. They only come once a day now.

I miss people in real life in Berlin, all over the States, and my home town of Sydney. But weirdly, there’s a similar ache for my Para-social friends –  celebrities, TV characters and influencers. In our isolationism, para-social connections have spiked on all measures. The attraction? It’s a one-way fantastical relationship that won’t let us down, unlike real life.

My pre-internet Gen-X view of the world had para-socials way lower on the totem pole. People who stan celebrities, I’d want to ask, “Are you taking your meds? You know this person isn’t your friend, right?” But now I miss some influencers and TV characters like I miss my real friends. Because I only see everyone I know through a screen now.

Workwise, I’m doing my fifth job with people I’ve never met. Overseas agencies are now hiring freelancers from all over. It doesn’t matter anymore. No one’s anywhere and everyone is everywhere. I have jet lag for cities I’m not in. Fuck knows when I’ll see an office again.

As for sex, it’s like the 90s all over again. When was your last test? Are you having sex with other people? When was the last time? But there’s no condom for COVID. You can get it from your flatmate. There’s a lot of immediate disinterest and sometimes hostility for asking about COVID behaviors on the apps. Hate mail in three languages. And I get it. I don’t want to think about it either.

But you also find others, like me, who are trying to date a little, get a sense of the person, and use their instincts. Still, it feels like driving without a seatbelt. I’m too scared. I’m glad Bumble’s IPO did well. But what is dating even going to look like now?

    I bought a Kindle.

This wasn’t how I pictured it. I’m completely out of practice at being normal. Normal is scary. And empty. 80% of the island is closed. Streets, hotels, and malls are echo chambers. It’s eerie. But with sun.

A few months ago, I was salivating over the idea of being in a club with my friends, high, hugging each other shirtless at 4am. Kissing a total stranger at a street festival. Returning to my contact improv dance sessions in Berlin. Concerts! New cities!

But just dipping my toe in the normal pond here has me realizing Fantasy Island was exactly that. A fantasy. When normal happens again, I don’t know what it will look like, or how long before we’ll actually enjoy doing it.

2020 was alone, together. 2021 is bit less alone, bit more together. But I think this is going to take a while. Sorry, that was a fucking prediction.

There was intense colour everywhere… like light pouring in from multiple shattered stained-glass windows. Dancers in glitzy costumes, floats with blaring music, over-the-top-gala events… The heady Carnival of Gran Canaria in February was in complete contrast to the zen-like stillness in the island’s mountainous heart. In parts of Gran Canaria, the third largest of seven islands in the Canaries’ archipelago, we felt time in rewind; we might as well have been living in another century.

Yet in its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the carnival unfolded like a hip and happening fairy tale for adults. Indeed Las Palmas de Gran Canaria basks in year-round sunshine. When US climatologists surveyed 600 places to discover the world’s most perfect climate, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was at the top of the heap!

    A look at history

Little wonder then, Gran Canaria has been billed as the island of eternal spring and its balmy clime has lured tourists in search of sun, fun and sangria including the redoubtable Agatha Christie, who invented her famous character Miss Marple while vacationing in Gran Canaria. In ancient times, the island drew explorers like Christopher Columbus, who spent much of his time restocking and repairing his fleet in this rocky outpost, even as he chilled on its spun-sugar beaches. In Las Palmas’s Old Town stands a building, Casa de Colon, House of Christopher Columbus, where the explorer is believed to have lived in between his voyages to the Americas.

In the 15th century came the Spanish who colonised the islands. Not surprisingly, the people of Gran Canaria say that their minds are European, legs are African, but their hearts belong to South America! Located off the coast of north-western Africa, Gran Canaria was once dubbed the bridge between continents, as it played a role in Spain’s colonisation of the Americas and Canarians founded numerous cities from San Antonio in Texas to Montevideo in Uruguay.

And the terrain is equally varied, ranging from its pulsing capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, sleepy villages, rainbow-hued towns with lyrical names like Arucas, Ingenio, Teror, Agumes… towns with cobbled streets, yawning squares, soaring churches and houses with overhanging wood balconies that are reminiscent of South America. Throw in rugged mountains and rolling sand dunes and beaches that flutter like gold and white ribbons in the sun… and Gran Canaria has more to offer than its hefty purpose-built resorts which lure Europeans aching for a tan in winter.

Unveiling the island’s many charms started with an excursion to La Finca de La Laja to the north of the island, outside the town of Agaete, which sits pretty on a mountainous ridge, an amorphous cluster of blinding-white homes topped with red roofs. We arrived at an alluring spot, shaded by 200-year-old pines where the air was spiked with the tangy zest of oranges and the cloying sweetness of mangoes. Vineyards spread a glistening green welcome, while bushes of juicy red Arabica Typica coffee berries (La Finca is the most northerly coffee plantation in the world) sprouted across 12 hectares.

We did a spot of coffee and wine tasting there before tucking into a light local-style lunch that left us feeling like we had swallowed mouthfuls of Gran Canaria sun.

Satiated, we headed for Guayadeque ravine in the east of Gran Canaria, via giddy winding roads dotted with dry scrub and cacti that ended at a lush gorge, surrounded by ridges that heaved out of the earth like breeching whales. Here where cliffs rose as high as 1,500 metres, there was also a small settlement of cave homes where modern-day escapists hunker down in cosy little caves. It was in similar bolt holes that the original inhabitants of the island lived prior to the Spanish conquest in 1478; safe from rampaging pirates who prowled the seas that circled the island.

    Life in a cave

Even today, apart from cave homes, there are cave restaurants, a chapel in a cave where the pulpit, altar and confessional are all carved out of rock and even rural cave accommodation for tourists! Isabel, a kindly old lady, showed us her cosy cave home, which has an even temperature of 22 degrees centigrade throughout the year. Solid wood closets, capacious double bed, photos of her children and grandchildren and a large crucifix made it seem like that was the most natural way to live. When we returned to our hotel fronting Las Canteras beach in the capital, we were swamped by a surreal feeling of how Gran Canaria dances to the twin rhythms of modernity and tradition.

Tourists flock to Gran Canaria for its white sand beaches fringed by a turquoise sea, especially Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas in the south, which has some impressive rolling sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara. Here, tourists sat dreamily on hillocks o sand ruffled by a gentle breeze or did yoga as a blood-red sun sank behind a swathe of sand. But it was the small bougainvillea-draped fishing village of Puerto de Mogan in the south-west that we fell in love with. Its marina brimmed with yachts and fishing boats which handed the day’s catch to restaurants that lined the quay.

Indeed that ball-shaped sun-blasted island is a continent in miniature where the landscape unscrolls in infinite variety and every bend in the road throws up a new vista. Yes, Gran Canaria is the kind of place where each morning you want to just leap out of bed and get on with life!

    Fact file

    Flights arrive at Gran
Canaria Airport from Madrid and most major
European cities. There are air and ferry connections between the other Canary islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Palma, and Fuerteventura.

Las Palmas has a choice of mid-segment and luxury hotels, as does the south with its swish resorts built for fun in the sun. Some of the historic small towns have atmospheric boutique hotels.

    News

Since 1987, the Carnival, held in the Canary Islands, has been included in the Guinness Book of Records due to its scale: more than 200 thousand people participate in its dances at the same time.

Every year, millions of people come to the Canary Islands to be part of a holiday where everything is allowed and where participants have only one requirement: to have fun.

This year’s Carnival started on January 21, with a solemn presentation of candidates for the role of Carnival Queen. By tradition, the election of the Queen is one of the key events, because it is she who is the central figure of this unique holiday, around which all further actions unfold. The main theme of the Carnival in 2015 is “The Future”. She received the approval of 36% of the audience according to the results of Internet voting and became the main leitmotif of the upcoming fiesta.

Carnival in the Canary Islands is one of the largest and most significant in Europe and the second in the world after the famous Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. His mesmerizing shows and colorful processions in colorful costumes to Latin American melodies began to take place as early as the 18th century. Today, about a million people take part in this event every year.

As part of the Carnival, the municipality of each city presents its own weekly program of festive events, but the carnival parades and competitions that take place in the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have gained the greatest scope and popularity. Bright processions, incendiary dances, unusual competitions, enchanting shows and concerts of famous world stars await the guests. Lovers of family holidays will also like the carnival: its program will include children’s contests and processions, as well as the Thousand and One Nights festival.

None of the participants will have a chance to forget this exciting holiday, dipping into the fabulous world of the Canary Islands. The variety of the program gives tourists many chances to get acquainted with completely different traditions of the Carnival: from the seething maelstrom of capital festivities to the measured fun of provincial towns.
