Estefania Martin never expected lava to arrive at her front door.

“I feel like I’m living in a comic book,” she says.

Martin lives on the island of La Palma, one of the Spanish Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa, where the Cumbre Vieja volcano has been spewing lava and ash for two months.

“Ashes started raining from the sky. We couldn’t breathe. Every day there was something new – the thread of lava redirecting and coming our way,” Martin says.

The lava is now about 400 yards from her home, forcing her family to flee the longest volcanic eruption on the island in 343 years. It’s swallowed more than 1,400 homes and many of the island’s precious banana trees and triggered more than 20 earthquakes just last Sunday.

The volcanic action has also become a tourist attraction. People have flocked to La Palma to ogle the bright red flames as they shoot hundreds of feet into the sky – sometimes sipping wine while shoulder to shoulder with the thousands of people, like Martin, who have had to evacuate.

“People who visit cannot imagine the worry, the sadness, the uncertainty about where you’ll be tomorrow and what to do with your life, and that you might have even lost your job,” Martin laments.

It’s been 50 years since a volcano erupted on La Palma.

“I think people hadn’t realized what an eruption entailed,” says Carmen Solana, a volcanologist at the University of Portsmouth, who grew up in the Canary Islands. She says these kinds of prolonged eruptions aren’t that unusual and often last between one and three months. But she said that didn’t make it any less heartbreaking, when she visited the island in September.

“Within a week of the eruption starting, I had so many people asking, is it going to finish soon? It was just so hard to say, well, we don’t know,” Solana says.

Volcanic eruptions formed the Canary Islands millions of years ago. The islands are rugged, but this eruption hit one of La Palma’s few flat spots that is used to farm bananas. The lava oozed easily over the terrain and incinerated banana plantations’ irrigation systems.

Volcanic ash has blackened the fruit’s skin, though they still taste OK. The Association of Banana Producers Organizations of the Canaries has created a new sticker for the disfigured fruit – with the word “volcano” and a photo of the fiery crater – to let people know the dark spots are just cosmetic.

Bananas are an important source of income for La Palma and, in the last two months, the industry has watched some $100 million slip away, according to the regional government.

While the ongoing eruption is destroying people’s livelihoods, Solana says it is actually vital for the islands’ survival.

“If this didn’t happen, the islands would be completely eroded by the sea. We wouldn’t have a place to live. So, while it is destructive and traumatic, it is a constructive process. The island is expanding and growing,” she says.

Scientists say there are signs the eruption is easing. Sulfur dioxide emissions are down. There are less tremors. But, volcanoes are not predictable.

“Much less volcanoes like those in the Canaries,” Solana says, “because they only erupt every 50 years, we don’t have enough data to say, well, the majority have behaved in this way.”

In the meantime, Martin isn’t sticking around to find out if the Cumbre Vieja volcano is, indeed, running out of energy. “I can’t sleep at night. The black sea of lava is so sad. I wish I’d never seen this,” she says, trying not to cry.

Martin has been offered a job outside of La Palma and plans to accept it for at least two months. “I will come back. La Palma is my life, all my things are here, it’s my home. But we’ll never be able to forget this. This will leave a scar on us, a lot of pain,” she says.

Nevertheless, Solana is positive that after the eruption, the reconstruction is going to be faster than people think, “And they will be able to recreate their livelihoods somehow again.”

The Cumbre Vieja eruption in 2021 was the most protracted and disruptive volcanic eruption in the recent history of the Canary Island of La Palma. More than 1,600 structures, including about 1,300 residential buildings, were destroyed or damaged. Pictures of lava flowing through settlements and out into the sea were seen around the world. Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany have now established that one of the reasons the destruction was so devastating was that the lava ejected during the eruption was exceptionally low in viscosity, causing it to flow very rapidly.

“The lava’s viscosity was among the lowest ever observed for a basaltic eruption,” said Yves Feisel, a doctoral candidate in Professor Jonathan Castro’s research group at the JGU Institute of Geosciences. Castro and Feisel measured the viscosity of the Cumbre Vieja lava in the laboratory and published their findings in Nature Communications.

“It was actually possible from the footage of the lava flows on TV and online to see how fast the lava was moving and thus deduce its low viscosity,” said Feisel. Based on the filmed images, the researchers calculated that, in some cases, the exit speed of the lava was greater than ten meters per second. In addition, the researchers were able to observe phenomena in the lava flows that are normally more characteristic of turbulent flowing fluids, such as those within bodies of water, for example, so-called hydraulic jumps or standing waves.

To determine the viscosity of the lava more precisely, the researchers collected solidified ash particles as they fell from the sky on La Palma. Back at Mainz University, they were able to determine the temperature of the eruption by chemically analyzing these samples, revealing that the magma must have been in the range of approximately 1,150 to 1,200 degrees Celsius. They also melted some of the samples and measured the viscosity of the melt at these temperatures using a device known as a rheometer.

“Shortly after the eruption began, the lava had a viscosity of about 10 to 160 Pascal seconds,” Feisel explained. “That is a figure 10 times lower than, say, the viscosity of the lava discharged from Kilauea in Hawaii in 2018.” According to Feisel, the Cumbre Vieja lava was so fluid primarily due to its specific chemical composition, in particular its relatively low silica content and the way in which this melt crystallized: “When the lava cooled, crystals were formed and this likely helped retain the low silica (SiO₂) content of the lava, allowing it to maintain its low viscosity over a longer period of time. “

These research results may help to mitigate damage caused by volcanic eruptions in the future. “It is always very difficult to predict when and how volcanoes will erupt,” Feisel admitted. Nevertheless, the information on lava viscosity may prove useful since fluid lava such as that from Cumbre Vieja is usually discharged from a variety of locations, some of which may vary over time. Knowing that the lava is low in viscosity and will flow rapidly can, among other things, help integrated eruption and terrain models to better predict the course and evolution of future lava flows.

Chief Researcher of the Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS, member of the International Academy of Geoecology Samvel Hakobyan told Reedus about the consequences of the Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption on the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic.

According to Hakobyan, the collapse of large volumes of rocks into the Atlantic Ocean during the Cumbre Vieja eruption can lead to a local tsunami in the area of ​​the resort archipelago, which will also affect the nearby coasts of the continents.

This tsunami can spread both to the African continent and to the European coast, depending on which side of the volcano such a collapse occurs. Theoretically, the wave can reach America – but this already depends on the scale of the eruption, the expert said in an interview with Reedus.

In some Telegram channels, there were claims that the Canarian volcano, emitting 10-11 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide SO2, can even cause global cooling – albeit a small and short-term one. But Vladimir Semenov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, denied these statements in a conversation with Reedus.

This is a very small eruption, puff. There will be no consequences for the climate from it. To significantly change the global climate, the scale of the volcanic eruption must be a hundred times greater than it is now in the Canary Islands,” the climatologist said.

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma began on September 19th. But now the lava flows are only intensifying – the third crack has already formed on the volcano. The authorities of the island evacuated more than 6,000 people from the disaster area.

On September 28, a lava river from the volcanic vent reached the Atlantic Ocean, where it formed a 50-meter pyramid. During the reaction of lava with sea water, a column of water vapor was formed with hydrochloric acid and microparticles of volcanic glass.

Puerto de la Cruz is a town on the north coast of of Tenerife. It is one of Tenerife’s top resorts.

Visiting Tenerife’s northern towns is always a pleasure as they are set in the lush, verdant countryside of northern Tenerife.  Puerto de la Cruz is no exception and is has an abundance of sub-tropical plants and the surrounding region is filled with tropical fruit plantations.

The town has many fine buildings and the harbour area is particularly pretty. In the older parts of town the streets are narrow and cobbled and there are lots of bars and restaurants in which to pause and soak up the atmosphere.

Calle Lomos and the Plaza del Charco del los Camerones are the hub of the old town and here you can enjoy the fishermen’s cottages painted in different colours and lit at night by old fashioned lanterns. The church of Nuestra Senora de la Pena de Francia on the Plaza de la Iglesia is one of the finest on Tenerife and was built in the 17th century.

One of the great attractions for many visitors to Puerto de la Cruz is its excellent lido, the Lago Martianez which was designed by Cesar Manrique. The lido has beaches, palms, sea water pools and lots of tropical plants as well as bars and facilities –  everything you need for day in the sun.

Puerto de la Cruz has a great climate and has some excellent gardens. The Botanical Gardens in the La Paz suburb of Puerto de la Cruz are a treat with huge lily ponds, a 200 year old fig tree and giant bird of paradise plants. The Risco Belle Aquatic Gardens is another to visit and has water gardens and lots of tropical plants. The Sitio Litre Garden has tropical and sub tropical plants and the oldest drago tree, ‘dragon tree’ in Puerto de la Cruz.

Sat above the town is the Hotel Taoro a huge hotel, sadly abandoned for the moment, which once saw the likes of Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie as its guests. It sits in large gardens on the edge of a volcano. It may be restored as a parador one day in the future.

Unlike many Tenerife towns where a lot of British nationals either holiday or live Puerto de la Cruz retains a very Canarian flavour.

Puerto de la Cruz, Canary Islands – Live Weather Update

Located on the north coast of Tenerife Island, Puerto de la Cruz is one of the Canary Islands most popular tourist destinations.

The town experiences a year round, warm Mediterranean climate even though it is situated in the cooler Northern part of the island. Puerto de la Cruz is perfectly placed at the base of the La Orotava valley, allowing it to receive less rain and more hours of sunshine than the rest of the north. The region still has enough rainfall to maintain its lush sub-tropical appearance.

The weather can be less consistent than in the south and the beaches do not compare. Given this; Puerto Cruz appeals to a wide variety of holidaymakers, even though the winter months attract more established guests, especially from central Europe.

The temperature varies only minimally throughout an entire year ensuring an ideal beach holiday at any time of the year. Thanks to the short flight time and mild winter months Puerto de la Cruz sees many people vacating to this beautiful area escaping the cooler climates of many other European destinations. The warmer sea temperatures mean that you can swim in winter if you are feeling a bit brave and by summer the water is lovely and warm.

The summer months in Puerto de la Cruz fall between early June and late September. The average temperatures range between 17 -20 degrees Celsius with the daily lows fluctuating between 13 16 degrees Celsius and daily highs between 21-23 degrees Celsius. Highs of over 40 degrees Celsius have been experienced in July and August so prepare yourself for the possibility of an extreme heat wave.

Very little rain falls during the summer months so you should have hours of uninterrupted sunshine for some fun on the beach or a few rounds of golf. The peak of summer sees rainfall at an absolute minimum with less than two days of rain on average in June. The whole of summer usually results in about 12 -14 mm of rain spread out over 9 11 days.

The town experiences eleven hours of sunshine everyday from June to September. If you plan on swimming the highest sea temperatures can be found in September with an average of 24 degrees Celsius. This is perfect time for a relaxing or action packed holiday on the beach and with fewer crowds then the rest of Tenerife; Puerto de la Cruz is a great option. The largest crowds are found during the height of the summer school holidays from July to August.

Autumn in Puerto de la Cruz is mild with temperatures averaging between 16 18 degrees Celsius. As the season progresses daily lows fall to around 13 degrees Celsius. The cooler weather means that the town is less crowded then in the summer months, which makes it a great time to visit for those people looking for a quieter holiday. October is a popular time for golf holidays as the weather cools but the rain is still minimal.

The average rainfall increases, with November being the second wettest month of the year, receiving on average of 42.5mm or rain spread over ten days.  

The sea is still warm enough for swimming with temperatures of 24 degrees Celsius in October and dropping to a still very warm 22 degrees Celsius in November.

You can still enjoy eight nine hours of sunshine through the autumn months in Puerto de la Cruz. That is more than twice the average for the United Kingdom at the same time of year.

Winter in Puerto de la Cruz is the wettest and coldest season of the year. Temperatures average between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. This means the winters are mild in comparison to most of Europe. The short flight times make this a good choice for a short break away from the severe winter weather. The average highs range from 16 degrees in December to 14 degrees in January and picking up again to 15 degrees in February. The coldest day ever recorded in Puerto de la Cruz was January 16^th 1988 when a low of 8 degrees Celsius was recorded in the resort town.

December is the wettest month of the year with around 83mm around spread out over twelve days. You can still be lucky and catch a few days of sunshine with an average of seven hours of sun every day.

The sea remains warm with temperatures averaging 21 degrees Celsius throughout the winter months. If you want to swim or go scuba diving a wetsuit is recommended.

Despite the milder weather you will still have an average of 7 to 8 hours of sunshine each day giving you plenty of time to work on your tan and soak up some warmth. The winter season sees smaller crowds and hotel prices drop dramatically. If you want a bargain, quite holiday or just a bit of warmth Puerto de la Cruz is a great option.

Lago de Martianez.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Puerto de la Cruz. The days are getting warmer with daily averages of around 14 -15 degrees Celsius. The average daily high temperature is 17 degrees and the days get warmer as the season progresses. Lows of 10 11 degrees are normal for this time of year making this an ideal sunshine break from the still bleak weather in the North. The holidays in April bring a number of tourists wanting to escape the cooler weather.

March can still be quite wet with an average of 27mm of rain spread out over eight days but this falls dramatically by May which receives just 4mm of rain over two days.

You should get 9- 10 hours of sunshine per day, allowing lots of tanning time by the hotel pool or on the beach. The sea is a balmy 20 degrees Celsius making a dip in the ocean a tempting prospect after all that tanning.

This is a popular time for golf and sightseeing holidays as the weather warms up and fewer days of rain are experienced. The weather can still be a little cool for a beach holiday in March but it is perfect by May. Peak season only starts in June so spring is a wonderful time for a sunny holiday without the crowds.

Weather Hazards

Puerto de la Cruz is known for its calm and mild climate. However in July and August temperatures can flare with highs of over forty degrees Celsius recorded.

The island of Tenerife on which Puerto de la Cruz is located experiences dust storms known as Calimas. These dust storms are blown in from the Sahara and can cause high temperatures and low visibility. People who suffer from respiratory conditions are often affected by the dust storms. The winds increase the temperatures to the point that is unpleasant to be outdoors.

Puerto de la Cruz is fairly sheltered from the worst of these storms by the hills that surround the town but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for this extreme weather. A hotel with air conditioning is a good place to hide out until the winds pass and the temperatures cool down to normal.

Puerto de la Cruz is located in the northern part of the island, which is characterized by a humid climate and the presence of subtropical vegetation. It is somewhat cooler here than in the southern part.

Rest here will appeal to active people who are bored with a quiet beach holiday. In addition, there are many attractions, beautiful nature. The indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands love to spend their holidays and weekends here.

I do not recommend this resort for swimming, as there are big waves and it often rains. Better come here for a day to see and swim. By the way, there is a cool entertainment for children nearby – Loro Park.

Playa Chica on Playa Jardín

Playa Jardín is one of the most famous beaches in the area. It has all the amenities, as well as a beautiful view of the Teide volcano. Walk along the beach after visiting Loro Parque.

Climate and vegetation

In contrast to the arid southern coast of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz has a humid climate due to the constant influence of the trade winds, providing a diverse and rich flora. Evergreen forests (monteverde), which include some types of relic plants of the Tertiary age, are well preserved in the vicinity of the city (Orotava valley). The city is surrounded by extensive banana plantations, which are shrinking as development expands in the communities of Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava.

History

Known since 1502 as a port for the inland community of La Orotava. In 1603, the village built its own church and square.

After the port of Garachico was destroyed by the Teide eruption in 1706, Puerto de la Orotava became the most important port on the north coast of Tenerife, and wine production made the settlement an important commercial center. May 3, 1651 King Philip IV of Spain granted the settlement the status of a community.

In 1808, the city received full municipal autonomy (before that time it was part of the municipality of La Orotava) and became known as Puerto de la Cruz.

At the end of the 19th century tourists from England began to visit the city. At this time, the first Grand Hotel Taoro was built. Also, old mansions (“Marquesa” and “Monopol”) began to undergo redevelopment, being transferred to the category of hotels.

In the 1950s the city became a significant tourist center. One of the first tourists in Puerto de la Cruz was Alexander von Humboldt, who called the Orotava Valley, in which the city is located, the most beautiful he had ever seen.

We stayed 2 nights and loved the perfect location. The beds were extremely comfy in the spacious bedroom. Small garden outside. Located minutes drive from bars and restaurants. Apart from that, Piscinas Naturales Los Abrigos was 10 minutes’ drive away.

Spend our time here nicely. We liked the room with a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a dining area and an ironing set. Hotel was right by a convenience store and a grocery store. Plus, we were 25 mins by foot from playa el barranco public beach.

was too weak. There is a router in the apartment, but outside the living room, there is no signal. Too frustrating using Wi-Fi.

Another KGO resort. Same food, same entertainment. Not as “luxury” as they pretend and are actually very overpriced. Not anywhere to go if you like calm. Directly below the flight path so planes every few minutes and loud music from the bar very late almost every night. Relief to go home at the end.

The apartments were clean and spacious only have 4 stars as I have gone to KGO several times and have been nice. The only downside was only 1 pool and it was in front of the whole restaurant so we weren’t able to use it as it was very inconvenient. There were only kids in the pool accompanied by one or two adults. All the sun loungers were taken in virtually no space. Hopefully, once fully developed, this won’t be a problem.

He loved a very calm, beautiful pool and solarium area. Entertainment for every evening. Very good restaurant on site also Zachary. The apartments are in very good condition and are modern with a good selection of TV channels and a DVD player. We went in June and the weather was nice around 25 degrees. We had one problem when the fumigation was carried out, we returned to our apartment and there were about 20 insects quite large in size and almost dead. All household appliances in the apartment are modern and working. Found the bathroom layout a bit odd as access to the bath/shower was inconvenient to access. Good experience overall.

Excellent accommodation, apartments have everything you need for a self-catering stay. The rooms are clean and have balconies. My room had a great mountain view and pool view. The location is ok, not the busiest of the areas but a few bars and places to eat and not too far from more variety.
The staff were nice, also they can organize excursions, Mount tethered was great. I would stay here again.

Excellent complex. Surprisingly quiet even though we are here during Christmas time. Zakaris (the only restaurant on site) is dead every night, even though some really good entertainment is on. Not many children or young people around – mostly older English people who come regularly every year. The staff is very helpful. The accommodation is excellent – we stayed in the Signature Suite so everything is top notch. Tenerife is perfect for winter holidays, especially if you are coming from the UK!

The suites are reasonably well-maintained and generally well presented, though starting to look a bit dated. The beds are comfortable but not overly so and one of the bedrooms only seems to have one socket which is usually reserved for a lamp. Despite these minor flaws, the resort is a wonderful place to stay.

This seems to be one of the world class lower class resorts but it suited us fine and I actually preferred it to the other places shown. Living room, fully equipped kitchen, bedroom, bathroom with small bathtub and shower within and a good size balcony. Pool facilities good with bar and food, Table Tennis, AirHockey, Kids playground, Foosball and crazy golf 1euro plus for amenities. Enjoyed our stay.

A good complex, two-story buildings, very pleasant, fresh rooms – apartments that have everything you need. Each room has open terraces or balconies. I recommend taking a car, there are not many interesting things around, the shops are expensive and with a poor choice.

  Satisfied with the hotel, this is a wonderful place to stay in Playa de las Americas. Convenient location, large beds. By the way, next to it were parks and palm trees. There is a great restaurant and the view from the hotel is GOOD.

  Staff and amenities, everything was well organized. Fantastic beach, great view! Not too far away are several attractions in Playa de las Americas, including the Siam Mall. I remember the selection of tapas and salads at the open-air bar.
