The island of Lanzarote is very popular among those tourists who are attracted by surfing in the Canaries. Here are attractive prices, delicious cuisine and, of course, expanse for riding. Waves come to the shores with enviable regularity, and the water temperature does not drop below +20 degrees all year round. Lanzarote Island does not stand out for its size, but the variety of waves allows you to choose the optimal size for yourself, as well as a convenient direction of wind and waves. These features make many surf teams from all over the world bring their teams to the Canary Islands for training.

Beginners choose to surf in the Canary Islands throughout the year, but for professionals, winter time is more suitable, when the waves are more aggressive.

Excellent opportunities for learning to surf are also offered to children who have already learned to swim. Experienced teachers, and part-time certified rescuers, who are always there and ready to help, help you take the right steps without stress and frustration. At first, kids are allowed to small waves, you should get used to them, understand their character. Further, at a minimum depth, classes are held to master the art of surfing, sliding along the waves on the board.

Yoga is an integral part of surfing in the Canary Islands. With its help, riders are able to increase their efficiency in the water, learn how to breathe properly, maintain balance, and improve stretching. Yoga also speeds up the recovery process of the body’s muscles after long and exhausting workouts.

Welcome to the Canary Islands

The landscape of the archipelago is striking in its diversity. The northern part of the islands is represented by nature reserves, which are under the protection of UNESCO. Here you can take a break from people, climb into the wilderness and enjoy peace and freedom.

Practically on all islands there are volcanoes which caused their formation. Syerfing camps are usually built next to long beaches, which makes it the best way to organize surf lessons and yoga courses. Many tourists remember surfing in the Canary Islands primarily due to the Playa Famara beach, which is considered one of the best places in the world to learn to surf.

Surf camps in the Canary Islands

Most surf camps are located in private villas. Here you can find several rooms designed for 2-4 people. Toilets and showers are located on the floor. Guests are offered not only accommodation, but also training in surfing, surfari, kite, yoga courses from professional teachers. Car and bicycle rental is available, which saves travel lovers and those who intend to explore their island far and wide.

Surfing in the Canary Islands

Thanks to the abundance of spots in the Canary Islands, you can ride excellent waves without leaving the calm and civilized European continent. Lunar landscapes, mountains and excellent waves from all sides make a vacation on the kanarskih islands an unforgettable adventure, after which only positive impressions remain.

On the islands, special emphasis is placed on tasty and healthy food. Tourists especially like fresh seafood. At the same time, the number of restaurants and cafes with cheap lunches is an order of magnitude higher than in any average city in Europe.

TAG Heuer creates watches for all time, harmoniously combining tradition and innovation, turning to the past and looking to the future.

Yachting and surfing all year round: holidays in the Canaries

Seven islands in the middle of the Atlantic, exotic isn’t it? Canary Islands, also called islands of eternal spring welcome travelers all year round due to the subtropical climate. Well-groomed beaches, mountains, forests and volcanoes, warm sea: the islands offer such a variety of landscapes and activities that even the most active ones will not get bored here. Holidays in the Canary Islands will give you the opportunity to do yachting , surfing , windsurfing , diving , kitesurfing , sport fishing and hiking 0084 . Click&Boat editors have prepared for you the most interesting information about the archipelago.

Isles of Eternal Spring

Without a doubt, one of the most iconic features of the archipelago is its beautiful weather throughout the year. Due to its location between Africa and the Atlantic Ocean, the weather here boasts consistency and temperatures average 19ºC in winter and 23ºC in summer.

The Canary Islands also offer the most hours of sunshine in Europe : To be precise, 4,800 hours a year is unbelievable, isn’t it? However, all 7 islands have a unique climate. For example, at Tenerife , La Palma and Gran Canaria you will have a better chance of seeing a rainy day than at Fuerteventura and Lanzarote . Because of this, the first three have more greenery and diversity in flora and fauna, while the rest offer much more desert landscapes. In a word, holidays in the Canary Islands are a real oasis.

Variety of scenery and activities

The Canary Islands appeared millions of years ago as a result of a series of volcanic eruptions. The age of the islands is different, as well as their landscape and history.

Hierro: the smallest island in the archipelago. Until the 20th century, the longitude of the island was accepted as the definition of the prime meridian. Since 2000, the island has been listed by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.

La Palma : another reserve, plus is one of the youngest islands in the archipelago. Here the landscapes are more reminiscent of Mars than Earth. Volcanoes, craters, kilometers of black lava beaches and pine forests.

Gomera : green island with laurel forests, with stunning scenery. Ready to explore?

Tenerife : is the largest island in and also one of the most touristy. It is a must to visit it, however, by renting a hotel you will find yourself in the very epicenter of mass tourism. An excellent alternative to visiting the island would be renting a yacht in Tenerife or a catamaran. There is a volcano on the island0083 Teide , a mesmerizing sight, as well as the highest point in Spain .

Gran Canaria : the second largest archipelago also offers a wide range of activities for its guests. Have you heard about the mini desert Maspalomas ? Golden dunes, the home of Columbus, many hiking trails – all this awaits you in Gran Canaria.

Fuerteventura : most untouched beaches, 150 km long, winds that go well with sailing m and windsurfing and the most delicious cheese! Be sure to head to Corralejo Natural Park , where endless white beaches and turquoise waters are home to exotic flora and fauna.

Lanzarote : this island is one of the most popular for surfers. Local landscapes are often called lunar, and the island is considered the most mysterious in the entire archipelago. Head to Mirador del Rio to see the whole island from above.

An oasis for water sports enthusiasts

Waves , climate and water temperature each of the seven islands are great for water sports throughout the year. Here you can easily find equipment to practice any type of surfing and diving. If you want to go sailing, renting a sailing yacht on one of the islands is what you need.

Say hello to Playa de las Americas

Playa de las Americas is a resort destination on the south coast of Tenerife. It’s particularly well-known for its nightlife, which centres around Veronicas Strip, the Starco Centre and the Patch. The resort is also a very popular location for families, as it’s home to six sandy beaches and has a wide range of restaurants, kiosks and shops. Playa de las Americas is a great spot for watersports, ranging from jet-skiing to water skiing and paddle-boating. Spending a day on a glass-bottomed catamaran is also a fabulous way to see the island – both above and beneath the water – with dining and swimming included. Children will also love the two large water parks nearby – Siam Park Water Kingdom and Aqualand Cosa Adeje. Tenerife is perfect for shoppers, as it’s a tax-free destination. The CC Safari Centre is a large shopping mall near Playa de las Americas, with a wide range of boutiques and high street labels on offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Playa de las Americas promises warm temperatures throughout the year – making it the perfect destination for sun-seekers. Winter is mild with temperatures above 20°C, although expect a bit of rain. Spring and autumn are warm with temperatures in the mid 20s, while summer is hot, with the thermometer regularly topping 30°C.

For family hotels, Playa de las Americas is a great choice. The beach itself has lots of restaurants, bars and entertainment for all the family. The Siam Waterpark is a kilometre and a half away – here you’ll be immersed in the Thai-themed pools, slides and décor. Thrill seekers won’t want to miss out on the 28-metre-high Tower of Power slide, one of 29 slides at the park. If it’s nightlife you’re after, book a hotel at Playa Troya. With its fine, golden sands and calm waters, it’s a relaxing spot by day, but comes alive at night. Head to Veronica’s strip for the most vibrant party atmosphere, where you’ll find nightclubs and bars serving cheap alcohol and playing drinking games. Hotels at Playa del Bobo will suit couples looking for something quiet and laidback. There are no watersports on offer here, meaning fewer visitors and families. With the fine, clean sands and gentle waters, it’s a great place to relax with a good book and soak up the sun. For surfers, hotels on Playa Honda are the place to go. Beginners can take lessons from the surf schools on the beach, and if you just want to watch there are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes on the promenade that provide ideal viewing spots. Hotels on Playa del Camison provide something for everyone. It’s one of the quieter beaches in the area, with loungers, umbrellas and showers to make conditions comfortable. Located in a small bay, protected by wave breakers either side, it’s a great safe spot for families with children. There are also water activities you can try such as paddle boarding or pedal-boating.

We rested with my mother (I’m 26)! We were delighted! Both from the hotel and from the island! In general, we love Spain very much! Been to Barcelona and Mallorca! We have been to many places and we have something to compare with! This is a good hotel!!!) But, of course, who goes for what! If all the time. ..

In this hotel, check-in is at 12 o’clock, we were settled only at 14 o’clock, then the room is cleaned, then wait, then something else. Electrical Plugs In Norway: All About Buying The Correct Travel Adapter

by Nicklas Iversen

You might have to use a travel adapter if you are visiting Norway from another country, but we also share the type of electrical plugs with many other countries. So which types of electrical plugs can you expect in Norway, and will you need a travel adapter to charge your electronics?

Norway mainly uses the electric plug type called Type F (Schuko) with 230 V voltage and 50 Hz frequency. These are compatible with electronics that use Type F, Type C and Type E. All other types need an adapter or even converter.

Who can use electronics in Norway without a travel adapter?

Most European countries with a few exceptions uses the same electrical plugs as we do in Norway. The only exception in Europe is the UK and Ireland, which have their own type of electric plug that is shared with some African and Middle-Eastern countries.

Some African countries also have the same types as the one we have in Norway. Refer to the map below to see a big list of all the countries that uses the same electrical plug types. Any country that is light blue or dark blue can use the electronic in Norway without a travel adapter.

Countries of the world, colored according to the main plug types in use. Illustration published with permission.

Some countries that can visit Norway without worrying about adapters are Germany, Spain, Sweden, Italy, France, Russia and more. All European countries also have the same voltage and frequency as Norwegian electronic plugs.

Countries that will need a converter to use the electrical plugs in Norway

All countries in both North American and South America, most countries in Africa, Australia and most Asian countries need an electric travel adapter to be able to charge their electric devices in a Norwegian electrical socket.

Using a charger without an adapter is considered very dangerous, even if the type does seem to fit into the socket. The reason is because of the different voltage and frequency, which in worst-case scenarios can cause the charger to overheat and catch fire.

Should you use an adapter or transformer?

To prevent disaster when charging your phone or camera when visiting Norway, make sure to pick up an adapter or transformer. An adapter is fine if you are using the charger for a short while, but more heavy electronic that is connected to the electrical outlet for more than a few hours should use a transformer instead.

I would advise against using an adapter when you are sleeping or not in the same building as the charger. This is because adapters are pretty safe, but do have some increased risk of malfunction and fire. So if you are close by, you will notice any potential problems early on.

That said, it’s very rare for adapters to have malfunctions, catch fire or anything like that, but you want to be on the safe side since fire hazards are serious business.

The transformers on the other hand are generally a bit bigger, but also safer. The also cost a little bit more, but it’s money well spent if you plan on using more heavy electronics or just want to feel more safe when charging your devices.

The adapter people from the US need when traveling to Norway

People from the US should buy a type A / Type B to Type F travel adapter.

The electric plugs from the United States and the rest of the Americas won’t fit the Norwegian electric sockets at all. They are also on the wrong frequency and voltage, so it’s super important to use an adapter or transformer.

The adapter people from the US need when traveling to Norway

People from the UK and Ireland should buy Type G to Type F travel adapter.

It’s also possible to buy an adapter that changes to type C, but these are more rare. Type C chargers will work at any Type F socket.

Where to buy travel adapters and transformers

You can usually pick up travel adapters at tourism shops or at the airport when you arrive, but these will be overly expensive. It will be much cheaper if you buy one from Amazon, Walmart or any other store that sell electronic before you leave your home country.

When buying a travel adapter, make sure that you buy one that also changes the voltage output, since this is different between Europe and the US. As mentioned earlier, you need 230 V voltage and 50 Hz frequency in Norway.

Bali Power Plug – Which Adapter you should carry?

In the 21st century, we simply cannot live without electronic gadgets, especially when traveling. Our phones are essential for staying connected to friends and family, and a camera is important for many to capture the sights and memories made while on holiday. Aside from these essentials, each traveler has their own electronics they can’t live without, be this a hairdryer, electric razor, electronic toothbrush, straighteners…  the list goes on. Therefore, when preparing for a vacation, making sure that your plug fits the local outlet is essential. In this article, we’ll be looking at the power plugs and voltage that Bali uses and whether you’ll need a travel adapter for your electronic products.

Bali Power Outlets: The Basic Stats

In Bali, the voltage used is 230 volts and the standard frequency used is 50 HZ. Unlike most countries, Bali power plugs are of two varieties, type C and Type F. Type C is known as the standard European plug, and its socket is compatible with both E and F plug types. Socket type F is compatible with plug types C and E and is referred to as the ‘Schuko’ plug.

Common Sockets Found in Bali

Plug Type C

The standard Euro plug otherwise referred to as ‘type C’ is a commonplace plug which is used throughout Europe. In fact, the only European countries that do not use this plug are the UK, Ireland, Malta, and Cyprus. The type C plug is also the most commonly used plug worldwide, therefore, if you’re a traveler from a country which uses the type C plug, so long as your country also uses the same voltage, you needn’t worry about purchasing an adapter when travelling to Bali.

The type C Bali power plug features two wires with two round prong that are 4mm in diameter and 19mm long. It is ungrounded and it is also unpolarized. The prongs of the plug are known to be quite flexible which means that they can fit into any socket with a contact range between 4.0 and 4.8mm contacts. This plug is typically reserved for applications involving less than 2.5 amps.

It is important to note however that while
type C plugs are incredibly commonplace, the use of type C sockets is not. This
is because the type C socket is ungrounded and is viewed as out of date
compared to its more modern socket types such as E, F, J, K, and N. In fact,
due to type C sockets being ungrounded, many countries have made use of them
illegal! So, why are type C plugs still so widely used? Well, as mentioned, the
prongs are flexible, meaning that they work perfectly with modern sockets such
as types E, F, J, K, and N.

Plug Type F

Another
widely used plug type in Europe is plug F, though its use is not as widespread
as that of the type C plug. Countries which commonly use plug type F include
Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, as well as large portions of
Eastern Europe. This plug type is most commonly called the ‘Schuko’ plug which
is a shortened version of the German word for ‘safety contact’: ‘Schutzkonakt’.
This is because the plug was created in Germany just after the World War One.

Visually, plug type F is very similar to
type C however it has two grounding clips. The prongs on a Schuko plug are
4.8mm in diameter and 19mm in length. Schuko plugs are unpolarized and they are
most commonly used in appliances that utilize no more than 16 amps. Type F
plugs can fit into type E sockets.

In regard to the type F socket, both type F
plugs and type C plugs can be successfully inserted. Type F sockets commonly
have a 15mm recess which means that part-inserted plugs won’t be a shock hazard.

Using Electrical Appliances in Bali: Voltage Adapter

If the voltage in your home country is in
the range of 220v to 240v then so long as your plug is type C or F, you can use
your appliances in Bali without needing a voltage adapter. If you’re not sure
about the voltage that your country uses, checking online is always a smart
idea. If you’re concerned about a particular appliance, you can find out the
input voltage of frequency by looking at the label that almost every electronic
appliance has. Ideally you are looking for a label which states ‘INPUT: 100-240,
50-60 Hz’ as this means your appliance is universal and is safe to use
worldwide. Many modern laptops, cameras, and cell phones operate in this way,
but it is still good to check to avoid frying your electronics.

Travelers from the United Kingdom don’t need
to worry about a voltage discrepancy in their appliances as Bali and the UK use
the same voltage of 230V. However, US travelers will need to use a voltage
converter on their appliances unless they are universal. This is because the
USA operates on a 120V system, far less than Bali’s 230V standard.

Bali Travel Adapters

Most European travelers are unlikely to
need an adapter to use their appliances in Bali. However, holidaymakers from
the USA, the UK, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Singapore, and parts of
Africa will need to use a plug adapter in order to operate their electronics.

Luckily, if you find yourself caught out, many villas, hotels, and holiday rentals in Bali will have an adaptor on hand for you to use, but you can’t rely on this always being the case. Making sure you bring your own travel adapter is strongly advised. Some hotels have different sockets for international travellers which are nothing like Bali power plugs.

When selecting the correct travel adaptor
for use in Bali be sure to select a model that is designed to fit into a round
socket, as this is what Bali uses. A square plug will not fit into a round
socket, so steer clear of square plugs even if they state that they are
suitable for use.

When selecting the right adapter for you,
it is important to remember that a standard adaptor does not alter the voltage
of the mains electricity. This means that travelers whose countries use a
different voltage level, such as the USA, will need to purchase an adapter that
also includes a voltage adapter, or buy a voltage adapter separately to
safeguard their electronics from damage.

Adapters can be bought in Bali for as
little as $2 (RP20,000). However, if you’re renting a villa or staying in Bali
for a while, or if you’re a bit of a jetsetter, you might want to consider
investing in a universal multi-port travel adapter such as the one pictured
below. A product like this can help ensure that you’re never caught out when it
comes to powering or charging your electronics when abroad.

Most Verstatile Travel Adapter, Works in Bali Too

Conclusion

To quickly recap, Bali power plug operates on 230V electricity, and utilizes plug type C and F, and socket type F. If you’re a European traveler you might not require an adapter, but those in the UK and outside of Europe will likely need to invest in an adapter to use their electronics with Bali power plugs. US travelers’ electronic products will be designed to run on 120V, far less than Bali’s 230V output, meaning that a voltage converter will likely be required.

So, when it comes to travelling anywhere in the world, it is always worth researching the plugs, sockets, and voltage used in your destination. Taking the time to do so before you leave will help you avoid stress when you arrive, allowing you to relax and enjoy your holiday.

You can purchase power plug adaptors at department stores in Bali for about Rp20,000 which is a bit over US$2. If you are taking several electrical appliances from home to Bali it might be worth considering buying just the one adaptor plug and having it fitted to a “home” power board of 4 outlets (see below) so you have available more convenient multiple power outlets to charge and power your appliances. Electrical equipment and appliances are generally risky buys in Bali as the warranty will probably not be honored once you get home and you will find that they aren’t that much cheaper in Bali either. An exception might be a cheap portable DVD player which will overcome the frustration of a hotel with only Indo TV programs available.

What is a SCHUKO connector?

“Schuko” (pronounced “Shuko”) is an AC power plug and socket system officially defined in the CEE 7/4 standard. The second name of the connector is type F .

This standard is most commonly found in the residential and commercial real estate sectors. nine0004

“Schuko” is an abbreviation of the German term Schutz kontakt (literally: “protective contact”). The term indicates that the electrical plug and socket are equipped with protective earth contacts in the form of metal clips.

The concept itself is a technical designation and most people do not know this term. Most often, sockets and plugs of this type are called euro connector .

Connectors (sockets and plugs) of the Schuko standard are designed and used in power supply circuits with a voltage of 230V and have a nominal current of 16A. nine0004

SCHUKO connector device

The Schuko plug is equipped with two round plugs with a diameter of 4.8 mm. for the electrical phase and zero, as well as two contacts at the top and bottom for grounding. The plug is inserted into an electrical outlet and connected to its contacts.

Schuko receptacles are made in a recess in the body, into which the corresponding plug of the equipment power cord is inserted. Such a socket can be installed inside the wall, on top of the wall (depending on the form factor), as well as in uninterruptible power supplies.

Where does this data come from

Weather data for Corralejo was collected from the MERRA-2 project from NASA, which used a climate model combined with historical data from weather stations around the world to estimate what the conditions were like for every point on the Earth.

For all data based on historical data, we’ve averaged the data from the past 11 years (2010-2020). For example, for the hourly temperature at 10am, we’ve looked at the temperature at 10am on every day in May (e.g., May 1, May 2, etc. in 2010, 2011, etc.) and took the arithmetic mean. We did not smooth the data, so for example, our daily temperature line will have some randomness due to the fact that weather is random in the first place.

What is Gran Canaria?

From a vacation spot with a bad reputation to a multi-faceted vacation metropolis, the Gran Canaria journey during the last twenty to thirty years has been remarkable. Today there is something here for everyone, well, maybe not for backpackers, but for everyone else.

The trendy traveller goes to Las Palmas, today a pulsating, romantic and classic big city; a miniature Rio. The nostalgic traveller goes for San Augustin which has been a favourite among the ones missing the seventies and the birth of charter. The party animal will find everything needed at Playa del Inglés which never seems to sleep. Travellers looking for comfort go to Maspalomas where you’ll usually find bungalow living in the remarkable outdoors. Tourists looking for luxury will keep an eye on the latest addition to the vacation spots of the Canaries, Meloneras, laced with luxury hotels and branded stores. The posh will most usually go to Arguineguin which is a little less charter-y, but also not. The sun worshipper will find a place in Puerto Rico where you´ll find a complete infrastructure for a vacation where sunbathing and swimming is king. The romantic might well return to the picturesque Puerto de Mógan where the fishing and yacht docks stands out.

These prejudiced epithets of the most popular places in Gran Canaria are definitely not true, but might be a pointer…

No matter your preferences, Gran Canaria is a hard to beat place for a week-long vacation in the sun!

Our journey will start in the capital of Gran Canaria. Las Palmas is one of the largest cities in the Canarian archipelago, with narrow old streets, a huge port, a historical and cultural center.

Let’s start our walking tour from the historical center of the capital – Vegeta. On Santa Ana Square, we will see the famous sculptures of dogs, in honor of which the entire archipelago was named Canary (canine). We will visit the famous cathedral, see the town hall, the episcopal palace and several Art Nouveau houses.

We will visit the Santa Catalina Park, the center of the city and the place where one of the best carnivals in the world, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is held. You will have free time to walk along the beautiful beach of Las Canteras. The beach is not only the treasure of the capital, it is the pearl of the entire archipelago.

Next, we will go shopping in the famous Spanish store – El Cort Inglés. In the central department store on several floors, you will find everything from small souvenirs to solid purchases. The Canary archipelago is a Spanish autonomy with reduced taxation, which is why shopping can be not only varied, but also much cheaper than in any other European capital. DAY 4

Excursion trip “Around the island – four coasts”.

Our journey begins in the little Venice of Gran Canaria, in the port of Mogán.

During the tour we will find out how a small fishing village has become one of the most picturesque and beautiful tourist centers of Gran Canaria. Colonial architecture and narrow canals with luxuriously blooming bougainvilleas create a unique look of the city.

Our path continues through volcanic landscapes and mountains of a thousand colors until we reach the city of San Nicolás, the center of countless plantations, with the most delicious tropical fruits on the island.

Again we will set off along the west coast with its picturesque cliffs, the next point where we will stop is Puerto de las Nieves in Agaete to see the remains of the ancient “Finger of God”. This is an amazing place, it has a special flavor – snow-white houses, fish restaurants, blue ocean, and huge rocks surround, as if protecting this place from the hustle and bustle of the whole world. Life seemed to stop in this place.

In Puerto de las Nieves you will have the opportunity to dine in a typical fisherman’s restaurant (for an extra charge).

We will continue our journey along the northern coast.

The city of Galdar is waiting for us – one of the ancient kingdoms of the natives of Gran Canaria. It was here, thanks to the fertile lands and the abundance of water, that the Guanches, the ancient people of the archipelago, lived. We will visit the picturesque central square, the Cathedral of St. Santiago.

It is also home to one of the most important archaeological sites of the entire Canarian archipelago, Cueva Pentada.

Next we will go to the city of Firgas, famous for its large number of water sources. Thanks to this, its streets are decorated with a huge number of fountains and water cascades. A tour of the historical center of the city begins at the main fountain of Firgas, built of volcanic stone.

Return to the hotel, rest.

DAY 5

Free day.

Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 6

Excursion trip “GranTour – the peaks of Gran Canaria”.

On this journey you will visit the most beautiful valleys of Gran Canaria, enjoy the splendor of nature, breathtaking views of the slopes, mountains and gorges, where the aborigines once lived.

Our path will pass through pine forests and groves of almond trees, we will go to the city of Arucas to visit a unique neo-gothic church that does not look like any medieval church. Then we will go to the city of Terore – the religious capital and city of pilgrimage of Gran Canaria, you can enjoy the special atmosphere of the colonial spirit of this town.

In continuation of our tour, we will go to the central part of the island in the Parador de la Cruz de Tejeda located at an altitude of about 1450 above sea level.

We will visit the most famous natural monument “Roque Nublo” which is also called “The Petrified Storm”. Do not forget your camera, in good weather you can see the island in the distance. Tenerife and the highest point of the entire Atlantic – Mount Teide.

We continue our tour and go via San Bartolome to Fataga. Here we will visit aloe vera plantations – the places where the elixir of youth is mined. In conclusion, the observation deck of Degollada de la Ería awaits you.

An amazing panorama of the majestic mountains in the center of the island, picturesque ravines, and snow-white sand dunes of the southern dunes on the Atlantic coast opens from here.

About Spain –

Spain – An ancient land that has always known the secret of youth. The birthplace of Columbus and Dali, Goya and Velasquez, Picasso and Gaudi.
It would probably take a lifetime to see all of Spain, and yet there may not be enough time to explore all facets of life on this small continent. Diversity of nature and climate, ancient culture and traditions dating back to knightly times. Nowhere in Europe is there such cultural richness for which the Spanish fiestas from Pamplona to Seville are famous. Traveling from city to city, you get from holiday to holiday.
Fiesta is not just a holiday, it is a completely relaxed continuation of ancient traditions, combined with modern elements and filled with joy. Amazing friendliness and hospitality, openness and politeness are part of the traditional Spanish character. You will see for yourself that there is nothing more pious than the local festivities and amusements, which are not complete without plentiful refreshments, strong old wines, music and dazzling fireworks, which are perhaps the most enduring tradition in more than 30 centuries of history.
The position at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, the Christian world and the world of Islam, the closed Mediterranean and the boundless Atlantic left an indelible mark on the entire face of the country, many architectural monuments, churches, castles and landscapes of amazing beauty. The variety of images amazes the mind: the windmills of La Mancha are the “giants” of Don Quixote; battlements of the knightly castles of Aragon; medieval fortresses frozen on the hills, baroque palaces and austere monasteries; sandy beaches of the southern coast and the Balearic Islands – washed by the gentle waves of the Mediterranean Sea; evergreen meadows on the Atlantic coast in Asturias; the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada; harsh, almost impregnable mountains, give way to the fertile plains of Andalusia; Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza – with their incredible whirlwind of cultural and nightlife.
Even in ordinary-looking “provincial” towns, various civilizations are organically layered: Gothic cathedrals grow over Moorish mosques, Baroque palaces appear on the site of Visigothic settlements, the remains of Greek columns or circular Celtic-Iberian villages. How different the landscape of one part of Spain is from another, so different are the Spaniards themselves.
Spain has many mysteries and wonders. People come from all over the world to admire the beauty, touch it and leave it forever in their hearts! It is impossible not to fall in love with this country! www.spain.info 90 days. Consular fee – 25 – 50 US dollars, depending on the type of visa. The days when Tenerife didn’t really have proper luxury hotels are long gone. In recent years, a wave of purpose-built luxury oases have sprung up to join the sprinkling of older dames, famed for their hospitality and charm.

If you love a bit of pampering and like to spend your hard earned cash on an indulgent stay, you’ll love modern day Tenerife. We’re talking coastal retreats with Michelin star restaurants, world-class spas and carefully thought through family facilities, such as baby purees, kids’ menus and plus plush robes for all-grown-up tweens.

This round-up is no collage of info woven together from the Internet either – I’ve personally stayed at every one of these hotels and resorts, and this is my tried and tested take on how they stack up for your holiday.

Getting to Tenerife: a luxury holiday doesn’t have to break the bank. Thanks to Jet2holidays, you can book your stay at any of the following hotels* for less than you might expect in 2019.

    1. Hotel Botanico & The Oriental Spa Garden

This grand old dame in the island’s northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz has been catering to the needs of well-heeled travellers since 1974.

Hotel Botanico* has hosted everyone from politicians and presidents, through to a slew of Hollywood A-Listers. Yes, it feels a bit old world, but that is all part of the charm and, following a major refurbishment in 2015, standards are still high.

Plus, its gardens may just be the finest of any hotel not just on Tenerife, but anywhere in the Canaries. This lush oasis feels more like southeast Asia than the edge of Europe.

The Oriental Spa is spot on, with a lovely outside space to chill in afterwards surrounded by lush greenery. Make sure to secure a room if you can with a Mount Teide view.

    2. Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque

I first stayed here back in 1998, not long after it had opened, and it was a surreal place as it was in the ‘resort’ of Costa Adeje.

The problem was that the resort hadn’t really been built yet and pretty much stopped outside the hotel. It’s a testament to its success that Costa Adeje now stretches all the way west where it now merges into the old fishing village (now resort) of Caleta.

Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque* was designed by architect Andre Pineiro to resemble a traditional Canarian village. That it does, but with a bit of Venetian drama and Las Vegas glam swirled in.

It eases down the hillside to the Atlantic and boasts its own beach in a rich carpet of luxury. It’s a real maze to get around, but that means lots of nooks and crannies where you can take it easy and also means that it rarely feels crowded, even when full.

    3. The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

On the foodie front, The Ritz-Carlton, Abama* is seriously greedy as it boasts not one but two Michelin star restaurants – plus another eight places to eat! M.B is the only restaurant in this rapidly emerging gastronomic island destination to sport two Michelin stars.

Creative creations at M.B in The Ritz-Carlton, Abama – photo courtesy of Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co.

I ate at this world-class gastronomic temple on my most recent trip, and its superb Japanese one Michelin star Kabuki before too.

Beyond the stunning cuisine, there’s the superb Dave Thomas 18-hole golf course, an excellent spa and a stretch of waterfront that feels a million away from the busy streets of some of the southern resorts.

    4. Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf

I’ve stayed at Sandos San Blas Nature Resort* a couple of times and enjoyed both visits. It may not be as plush as some of its five-star siblings, but it offers something a little different.

For a start, it’s set away from the big resorts and handy for the wee village of Los Abrigos, which retains some of its fishing village vibe and great seafood restaurants. It also was set up with an eco-friendly mindset.

The hotel is committed to helping protect the Barranco vicinity, including the San Blas Environmental Reserve, which you can take a tour of or explore yourself. I also love that some of the rooms have two-person sofa loungers on their balconies.

    5. Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife

Opened in 2016, the Hard Rock Hotel* in Playa Paraiso has been a real breath of fresh air. Above all, it’s fun, fun fun, from the moment you check in, when a live singer performs in the lobby, to when you emerge from the pool to find a DJ spinning tunes and a guitarist jamming with them.

The rooms are properly luxe and come with plectrum ‘air guitars’. You can even request for a real guitar to be brought to your room! It’s great fun for kids and big kids alike – my girls loved the Katie Perry and Lady Gaga outfits, while I was taken by Bruce Springsteen’s harmonica from ‘The River’, with bona fide memorabilia sprinkled around the hotel.

We loved the drum kit in the kids’ club too. Restaurants are varied and of good quality, while the swimming pools are brilliant. The main lagoon is massive and boasts a huge stage where big concerts are held.

    6. GF Victoria

If you want to feel part of the action, but also have your own oasis, the GF Victoria* is the place. Right in the middle of Costa Adeje just across from the luxury Plaza del Duque Mall, this newcomer is a stunner.

Inviting pool at the GF Victoria Hotel – photo courtesy of GF Hoteles, Tenerife

The main pool is massive, and my girls were thrilled with the dedicated water park and also an adventure playground with a climbing wall and towers. The restaurants are superb too, with even the buffet option cooking langoustines and steak to order, while Donaire offers some of the best fine dining in Costa Adeje.

The rooftop bar comes with a spectacular glass pool that overhangs the hotel, springing out into the Costa Adeje skyline. It’s the sort of resort that you really don’t have to leave.

    7. Fantasia Bahia Principe Tenerife

Opened late in 2018, the Fantasia Bahia Principe* is a luxury dedicated to families who aren’t content with limited kids’ menus and tiny playparks at so-called ‘family’ hotels.

Real thought has gone into capturing the hearts and minds of kids from the moment they arrive until they reluctantly leave.

Taking the plunge at Fantasia Bahia Principe Tenerife Hotel – photo courtesy of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts

My kids stayed in February 2019 and are already desperate to go back. The façade sets the tone as it looks like a Disney castle, a theme that continues inside with a fairytale tree sprouting by the main pool and another castle home to a fast food restaurant.

We loved that the kids’ clubs are included and that at night there were proper shows with skilled acrobats and lavish lasers that kept the attention of wee ones and parents alike. For younger kids, the buggy rooms and baby stations on every floor are very welcome.

This recipe is the first of two recipes that go together. The second part will be released tomorrow.

Like many people, I have been to the Canary Islands on multiple occasions. I’ve been to Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria – never Fuerteventura though – maybe that needs adding to the list of places to go.

Whenever I go to one of these Islands, you can guarantee I will be eating some local foods. One of my favourite local dishes is Papas Arrugada (Canarian Potatoes between you and me). These salt-covered small potatoes are delicious. They’re even better if you add on the Mojo Sauce.

These potatoes came about back in the Canary Islands’ earlier days where they had to use seawater as freshwater wasn’t easily accessible at the time. The method of boiling the potatoes and leaving them in the salty pan to “wrinkle” gives them their signature salty taste.

They are so easy to make, you need to make sure you’ve got smaller new potatoes and not something like a baking potato to make this with. Cutting a larger potato into smaller sizes won’t work as you need the potato skin.

These potatoes are lovely on their own, but if you want to take up a notch you should serve them with some Mojo Sauce (see tomorrow’s recipe for this!)

seafood and potatoes papas arugadas, gofio and goat cheese

The Canarian cuisine can be considered to be in a privileged position, because a number of factors give it a special exclusivity. One of them is the climate of the Canary Islands, thanks to which the soil here is fertile and fertile. Another important circumstance is the abundance of fish off the coast of the archipelago. And finally, the centuries-old mixed influence of various cultures: African, continental and Latin American. nine0003

[notification type=”alert-info” close=”false” ]All this has enriched the original island cuisine, adding exoticism and variety to the Canarian cuisine. What are dishes such as “papas arrugadas” or “mojo” sauce – specialties of the islanders worth.[/notification]

One of the characteristics of traditional Canarian cooking, on which its success is based, is simplicity. Simplicity is expressed both in the selection of products and in the short duration of the cooking process.

[notification type=”alert-success” close=”false” ]The most famous dish in the Canary Islands is papas arrugadas. This dish consists of a single product – potatoes, which are boiled with the skin in water with a lot of salt added. [/notification]
Potatoes are present in some form in almost every dish, either as a main ingredient or as an addition.

Sweet potato, in turn, gives the food a delicate sweet smell. Sweet potatoes are often used not to sweeten, but as a seasoning for vegetables and the popular sancocho soup on the island. nine0003

It is customary to start a meal in the Canary Islands with a tasting of an appetizer – soft goat cheese. Such cheese is eaten separately or together with sheep’s milk, which is very fatty (then the cheese will be creamy). This dish is eaten in different ways. As a rule, goat cheese is served raw because it has a light and very pleasant flavor. It is sometimes fried and served with mojo sauces or sweet jam (a must try!).

According to the generally accepted theory, the Guanches were a Berber tribe who arrived on the islands with their herds of animals and crops, the most important of which was barley. Gofio, a flour made from roasted barley, was their main food. This product is fundamentally established in Canarian gastronomy, flour began to be made from different varieties of roasted grains, such as wheat and corn. nine0003

Traditionally, gofio is made from grains in their skins. Water is added to the flour and kneaded into a dough known as “gofio amasado”.

The Canary aborigines ate a high meat diet and raised domestic animals (sheep, goats, pigs). They also ate milk and lard. The diet included gathering products such as dates and various types of figs. In addition, the islanders ate seafood that they could get off the coast.

It is known that the Romans landed in the Canaries, maintaining irregular contact with the locals, and brought here plants from other climatic zones, such as figs and olives. After the Spanish conquest in the 15th century, the islands became a must-see for travelers to the Americas, leading to an influx of merchants from both sides of the Atlantic. All of them brought their culinary traditions to the islands. Among others, gastronomic borrowings from the countries of the Iberian Peninsula stand out. nine0003

No less important are the recipes developed after the importation of a number of products from America (potatoes or maize, which in the Canaries is called corn due to Portuguese influence).

The modern history of the Canaries, as well as modern history, is replete with examples of the importation and exportation of agricultural crops, which formed the basis of the economy of the islands. All these products have left their mark on the culinary of the islands. This happened with cane sugar (Canary rum is produced from it, the traditional bienmesabe mousse and granulated sugar), grapes and bananas. nine0003

Wrinkled potatoes in brine or Papas Arrugadas

Wrinkled potatoes in brine or Papas Arrugadas

The idea for such a potato was suggested in one of the comments about the recipe for crushed potatoes. Being a bore, I immediately got on the Internet and found a lot of similar recipes both in Russian and in English. In Russian, the recipe is for some reason called fret potatoes. There, a much larger amount of salt is used, i.e., a supersaturated salt solution is made when salt is added to water until it ceases to dissolve. We are talking about 500 g of salt per liter of water. nine0003 Addition:

I tried to add even more salt during cooking – so much so that it stops dissolving. It turned out even tastier and easier – you don’t need to dry the potatoes in a saucepan, just fish them out of the brine and put them on a plate to dry. At this concentration of salt, slenka forms on the skin itself.
In English it is called Wrinkled Potatoes, translated from Spanish Papas Arrugadas and potatoes are boiled in a salty enough solution of sea salt close in concentration and composition to sea water. Salt is used somewhat less – from half a cup to a cup for the same liter of water. In addition, in Russian versions, it is proposed to wash off the salt after cooking, and in the English version, just the opposite, drain the water and dry the potatoes over low heat to form a salty shell. Another difference is that in Russian recipes it is suggested that potatoes be peeled before eating, while in English-speaking ones they are eaten with a peel. nine0063 Potatoes in both cases are very tasty, slightly wrinkled and completely unsalted inside. That is, salt dried on the peel turns out to be very appropriate. The principle of cooking in a strong saline solution is that at such a concentration, salt does not penetrate inside the potato, but rather draws water out of it, which gives the potato a more concentrated taste and dense texture.
I couldn’t find the origin of the Russian recipe Frit, but the Papas arrugadas recipe originated from the Canary Islands and is considered a national dish there. This dish is prepared from young potatoes and served with either red garlic-pepper sauce or green cilantro sauce. Last time I served potatoes with green sauce that was still in the fridge, today I made an additional red sauce and documented it. In my version, both sauces turned out to be not at all spicy, but terribly tasty. True, I do not know how authentic they are, because I have never been to the Canary Islands and do not know the original taste of these sauces. Traditionally, potatoes in the Canary Islands were boiled in sea water, but now they are boiled in plain water with a fair amount of salt added. nine0063 Papas arrugadas ([ˈpapas aruˈɣaðas] lit. ‘wrinkly potatoes’) is a traditional boiled potato dish eaten in the Canary Islands. It is usually served with a chili pepper garlic sauce, called mojo rojo, or as an accompaniment to meat dishes.
The dish is made from small new potatoes which are cleaned (but not peeled), then boiled in salt water. Originally, seawater was used, but today it is more common to use tap water with a very generous amount of salt added. After cooking, the water is removed and the potatoes are briefly left in the pot on the stove to dry off, until they become shrivelled with a fine salt crust. nine0063 Papas arrugadas are considered a signature dish of Canarian cuisine.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papas_arrugadas
I have tried both white and red potatoes this way. Both turned out delicious. It seems to me that it is interesting to serve two or even more varieties of potatoes at a time. Due to the greater concentration of taste, the difference in the taste of different varieties of potatoes is more noticeable.
I used the recommended sea salt in most recipes. I took an intermediate amount of salt – less than recommended in Russian recipes, but more than in English-speaking ones. Since sea salt is not cheap, I poured the brine into a jar and used it the next time I cooked potatoes. nine0063 And so, after a long preface, the recipe itself, which is extremely simple:
Thoroughly wash a small new potato with a brush, but do not pick out the eyes, if any. It is recommended to put the potatoes in a cooking pot in one layer, because before washing the potatoes, it makes sense to put them in a saucepan in order to know how much it will go in there.
Place the washed potatoes in a saucepan and add enough cold water to cover the potatoes. Add a fair amount of salt. In my case, for about a liter of water, I used a cup (cup) of salt with a decent slide. Bring the water to a boil, cover with a lid, reduce the heat so that the potatoes are cooked at a fairly intense boil, and cook for 25 minutes. During cooking, it is recommended to turn the potatoes over a couple of times, because due to the salt concentration, they are not completely immersed in the brine. nine0063 Drain off the brine (I save it for the next boil) and return the pot of potatoes to the heat, reduced to the lowest setting. Gently shake the pan to dry the potatoes on all sides until a salt film forms.
Serve immediately with red or green sauces. Today I also had homemade kimchi with potatoes.
Potato turns out so tasty that, in principle, it is already a whole dish, which does not even need meat. True, last time I had it with pork carnitas, which was also very harmonious. nine0063 Russian sources say that such potatoes do not spoil for several days without a refrigerator and are suitable for travelling. In addition, it is claimed that it is great for potato salads. I readily believe all this, but I have not experienced it myself. But she fried the rest of the potatoes, cut them into pieces directly with the skin, in butter with salt and green onions. It turned out very tasty.

Now red sauce. My recipe is a compilation of internet sources and my imagination.
Red mojo, made of small red peppers from La Palma (called pimienta picona) and paprika, is usually eaten with meat. Red and green mojo can be used interchangeably to season some dishes, prominently papas arrugadas con salsa mojo, or potatoes with mojo. Mojo is also commonly served with fresh bread rolls at the beginning of a meal. nine0083

I didn’t have a special Canarian pepper, but one of the Internet sources mentioned Mexican pepper, that’s what I used:
    https://www. amazon.com/El-Mexicano-Chili-Pods-Mexico/dp/ B07Y3Z9KPH

    Red mojo (Mojo Rojo)
5-7 dried New Mexico Chile Peppers
    8 garlic cloves
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon cumin
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    wine vinegar
Cut the stems off dry peppers with scissors and shake out the seeds. Cut into small pieces and pour boiling water over. Leave for about half an hour until the pepper swells and becomes soft. nine0063 Put pepper, chopped garlic, salt, cumin and vinegar into a blender. Grind to a smooth paste.
Add olive oil, run the blender for a few more minutes. The sauce is ready.

Green sauce ( Mojo Verde ) I will describe in detail the next time I cook it, but everything is also very simple there – a bunch of cilantro, a half bunch of parsley, five large cloves of garlic, a teaspoon of salt, green pepper or two (you can spicy, can be sweet as you like), a teaspoon of cumin, two tablespoons of wine vinegar, a cup of olive oil.
