8 Best Things To Do In Gran Canaria, Spain

Richard

Updated

Gran Canaria is exactly like it sounds: grand. As the second most populous part of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria will dazzle tourists with its weird mix of microclimates – with warm, volcanic sand beaches in the south and picturesque, green villages in the north. As expected, there’ll be plenty of natural scenery, and island life here is always at its finest, no matter what time of year it is. Check out our recommendations for the best things to do in Gran Canaria!

1. Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park

The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in Gran Canaria. Located right in the middle of the town centre of Gáldar, the museum aims to preserve, research and dissemminate information on one of the most unique settlements in the whole of the Canary Islands. Imagine a cave full of fascinating paintings from ancient times – that’s exactly what the Cueva Pintada Museum will give you, so history buffs will be absolutely thrilled here.

Not only do the facilities here allow the possibility to marvel at the exceptional wall paintings, the artistic expression and symbolism of the Ancient Canarians, but also they possess a pioneering centre in which to learn about the pre-hispanic world in Gran Canaria, as well as the stark events that culminated in the Island joining up to the Crown of Castile in 1483. Cool stuff.

2. Roque Nublo

A famous, and the biggest landmark of the island, Roque Nublo guards the centre of Gran Canaria but is surprisingly approachable for an icon: you can walk right up to it and just sit down. With a few ropes and a lot of courage, you can even climb it (though we wouldn’t recommend this for everyone). Roque Nublo roughly translates to Cloud Rock, and comes from Roque Nublo’s habit of disappearing into the clouds and mist that often envelop the top of Gran Canaria. If you visit on a cloudy day it’s always worth waiting for a while as the rock often pops out of the clouds for a few seconds, making for some potentially amazing shots.

Visiting Roque Nublo is never the same twice. Some days you’re surrounded by icy mist all the way up and can’t see the rock until you can touch it. Others there isn’t a cloud in the sky and the walk up is baking hot. Some days you get a bit of both: take a layer, even in summer. Look or listen out for the ravens as a couple of the island’s last few pairs hang out on the cliffs by Roque Nublo. A truly spiritual and magical experience awaits you.

The cauldron in Bandama, or the Caldera de Bandama is about 2,000 years old, and was formed when a fissure emerged on the hill between Los Hoyos Valley and the Barranco de las Goletas ravine, spewing out ash and volcanic slag in the process. It owes its name to a 16th-century Flemish merchant Daniel van Damme, who settled there and planted vineyards in order to produce wine, and the Bandama hamlet above survives as one of the most important winemaking areas on the island. So yes, you can come here, grab some tasty wine and feel the power of nature infuse into your grapes, imbuing them with flavor and volcanic power.

This is a pretty fascinating museum that documents explorer Christopher Columbus’ voyages and features exhibits on the Canary Islands’ historical role as a staging post for transatlantic shipping. Check out the model galleon (ship) on the ground floor, which particularly impresses children if you’ve got any in tow. The crucifix affixed there is said to have come from Columbus’ ship itself, so it contains plenty of actual history. On the upstairs floors, there is an art gallery and some models of Las Palmas’ past and present. And for cartography enthusiasts? Rooms five and six contain historical maps largely from the early 16th-century, absolutely drool-worthy.

Check out Gran Canaria’s very own gorgeous botanical garden, which oversees the conservation and management of the biodiversity of the island of Gran Canaria and is dedicated to the conservation and management of terrestrial Canarian Flora. There’s plenty of fascinating plant and animal life completely unique to the Canary Islands present here, all conveniently housed in the same location. There’s also a strong message of conservation throughout, and really, just come here to appreciate nature and life itself.

It’s part of the Canary Islands, so yes, there can and WILL be a beach present! Considered one of the nation’s very best urban beaches, the place enjoys fine and fancy free weather all year around. A great choice to get away even within the capital city, the sands of time have somehow avoided this place, and it acts almost like a beachier Central Park. Look out for people playing sports, and of course, come with swimming attire and a surfboard and ride the waves and soak up the sun!

This is a museum that was dedicated to Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, who was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the 4th of May 1887. A prodigious talent from an early age, he created his first drawings at seven years old. And given the artist that he would become, these were no mere childish doodles. Inside the museum, you’ll be able to see some of Nestor’s most famous paintings, including1900’s Marina, a painting Néstor completed at just 13 years old. Then, his teacher was the seascape specialist, Elisha Meifrén i Roig. Later on, he would go on to study under the likes of Rafael Hidalgo de Hidalgo de Cavides in Madrid, Paris and Barcelona.

De la Torre also spent some time in Buenos Aires before returning to the city of his birth in 1934 where he died prematurely at the age of 50, on the 6th February of 1938. How can you not love an entire museum designed to house works of a local artist? Truly cultural and unique.

Gran Canaria’s carnival was born when they decided to put carnivals and beaches together, and what an amazing idea it was too, with the perfect weather and absolutely insane activities. Happening each year in the middle of February, the festival celebrates the spirit of live and let live, with events like the Queen Gala and Drag Queen Gala, with plenty of colorful costumes, loud music and a ton of fun.

Lanzarote has something to celebrate every month of the year, so our latest post is a compilation of some of the best-known festivities that take place each month. Definitely worth noting down in your diary!

JANUARY

The year gets off to a great start in the town of Haría, located in the north of the island.  The  Haría Market is held every Saturday in January from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find a host of stalls packed with local produce, crafts and jewellery, as well as some of Lanzarote’s finest wines and cheeses.

FEBRUARY / MARCH:

The Canary Islands’ carnival celebrations rank among the best in Spain, and Arrecife is no exception to the rule. You’ll spend an unforgettable evening admiring more than 15 floats, all decorated according to different themes, as well as the fabulous costumes in an amazing parade complete with batucada music bands and dance troupes, street performances, the Drag Queen gala and the legendary murga satirical songs.

APRIL

This month is famous for the Holy Week processions, when religious images carried on elaborately decorated floats are taken around the streets of towns such as San Bartolomé, Tías and Teguise .

MAY

Ironman is a world class event. Around 800 athletes take part in Ironman Lanzarote, competing to obtain the maximum number of points in the three trials (swimming, cycling and running). The event takes place at La Santa Club, in the north of the island. The last day of the month is also Canary Islands’ Day, a chance for families to get together for lunch and enjoy traditional Canary Island cuisine, followed by folk songs and dances.

JUNE

The festivities to commemorate Midsummer’s Eve (Día de San Juan) on 23rd June mark the start of summer. Bonfires are lit all over the island, a custom of Christian origin that is still celebrated today.

JULY

July is marked by a range of celebrations in towns all over the island, although the highlights are undoubtedly the festivals that take place in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and La Graciosa. They include a packed programme of traditional activities such as Canary Island wrestling, performances by folk dance troupes, open-air dances and craft fairs.

AUGUST

This month sees the festival of San Ginés, held in honour of the island capital’s patron saint. Over the week ending the 25th August, the events organised in the city of Arrecife include parades, an entertainment programme that varies each year and open-air dances.

SEPTEMBER

Legend has it that Our Lady of Sorrows saved the town of  Mancha Blanca from the flow of lava following the eruption of a nearby volcano. For that reason each year the local residents take part in a procession to the church to give thanks to the Virgin. Other events include craft fairs, shows and open-air dances.

The Visual Music Festival has been held on Lanzarote each year since 1989, combining contemporary music with the island’s rich cultural heritage. Guide to Arrecife

The city of Arrecife is located on the island of Lanzarote, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. The city has a port located on the east coast of the island. Arrecife is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city full of history and culture. The name comes from the Spanish reef and refers to the volcanic rock formations that are in the sea and protect from the picturesque harbor. Arrecife began life as a small fishing village in the 15th century until it grew to become the capital of the island in 1852. Today, it is known as a shopper’s paradise! With streets lined with boutiques, high-end retail outlets selling designer labels and great deals plentiful, many people visit Arrecife for the endless shopping opportunities. DO Lanzarote

DO Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the Canaries. It is located between 28º14′ and 28º49′ degrees of longitude 7º13′ and ‘7º41’ degrees of latitude. 1000 km southwest of the Iberian Peninsula and 100 km west of Morocco.

The most important feature of Lanzarote’s climate is its aridity. This is determined by its low altitude and uniformity of terrain, qualities that allow the winds to carry moisture across the island without lingering, as they do not occur in most of the Canary Islands. Other factors that determine, to a lesser extent, the aridity of the island are orientation and geographical proximity to the African continent.

The practice of growing grapes occurs in areas where the soil has been covered with a layer of lapilli of considerable thickness. These conditions are created in areas near the cones of volcanic ejecta. Grapes are planted in huge holes in the ground (the so-called glasses) with a diameter of 2-2.5 m. In order for the roots to be able to reach the fertile layer and allow them to retain moisture. Often the hole is accompanied by a stone wall that protects the plantings from the wind. All this brings to the landscape of the island a unique and inimitable wine look. nine0003

This form of cultivation does not allow the use of machinery, so the work is done by hand. It also discourages high planting densities, resulting in low yields but excellent quality.

Wines of Lanzarote denomination of origin are characterized by a pronounced volcanic, perfectly balanced taste with relatively high acidity.

There is a wide variety of grape varieties with a predominance of white varieties. And among them, Malvasía Volcánica is the most representative. This variety is perfectly adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the island, and where the duality of acidity and volcanic taste are perfectly combined and are the hallmark of these wines. nine0003

Allowed white varieties (2016) :

Albillo, Breval, Vijariego, Burra Blanca, Gual, Listán Blanco, Malvasía Volcánica, Moscatel de Alejandría, Pedro Ximénez, Torrontés, Verdellotés.

Allowed varieties red (2016) :

Listán Negro, Bastardo Tinto, Malvasía Rosada, Moscatel Negro, Negramoll, Tintilla, Vijariego, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Ruby Cabernet.

In addition, our courier will not accept parcels that contain prescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes, perishable goods or original works of art. Flight schedule Tenerife – Delhi

The schedule shows the airlines and the days of the week on which these airlines operate direct flights Tenerife – Delhi.

When looking for tickets, keep in mind that each airline can adjust the flight schedule depending on the season.
During the holiday season, many airlines organize additional direct flights to holiday destinations. The schedule covers a limited time interval, so to search for flights on a distant date, use the ticket search form.

Recommendations for booking cheap flights

As a rule, the cheapest flights from Tenerife to Delhi can be booked a few months before the planned trip. So, for example, for buying cheap tickets for the summer, the ideal time is the middle of winter.

By spring, prices begin to rise gradually and reach a peak 1-2 months before the date of departure.

However, prices do not behave this way every year. For example in 2019There were periods when prices grew from the end of winter to the middle of spring, and then for a short time (literally for 1 day) they fell by 20..30%. Perhaps the airlines were trying to sell off empty seats at a discount at the end of the month, or travel agencies canceled their bookings, or new flights simply appeared. The reason is not known.

In addition, in 2019, there was a rather rare occurrence when 1 day before departure to Delhi, it was possible to purchase tickets for 30% -50% cheaper than the regular price.

It is likely that such anomalies are related to the economic situation and low solvent demand of the population of Russia, residents of Tenerife and nearby settlements. Since in previous years there were no such generous “discounts”, and on the last day before departure, ticket prices jumped 1.5-3 times!

It is impossible to predict what will happen to the dynamics of prices for air tickets next season. Therefore, you should not rely on luck and try to grab the cheapest ticket the day before departure. Such tickets may not be available. Conclusion: if you are not a thrill seeker, it is better to plan your trip in advance and buy plane tickets a few months before departure, while prices are not too high and there are empty seats.

Another place for successful wintering is Thailand. So far, Ukrainians can stay in the country for 30 days with a tourist visa, but it can be extended at the migration service.

To enter Thailand, all persons must first obtain a permit (QR-code) through the Thailand Pass system.

Tourists also need to undergo observation in a quarantine hotel for 7 to 10 days, depending on whether the person has a vaccination certificate (the vaccination procedure must be completed 14 days before the trip).

The permit must be issued for at least 7 days separately for each person over the age of 12.

Also, 72 hours before departure to Thailand, you need to get a certificate with a negative PCR test result, which will be checked when boarding a flight and at passport control in Thailand.

The Thai side recognizes the following vaccines:

  • Johnson & Johnson;
  • AstraZeneca;
  • Pfizer (BioNTech);
  • Satellite V;
  • Sinopharm;
  • CoronaVac (Sinovac).

In addition, Thailand accepts English-language paper vaccination certificates issued in Ukraine.

The country does not require a coronavirus test or vaccination certificate. However, before traveling, it is necessary to fill out a traveler’s health questionnaire. In it, aircraft passengers indicate that they have not experienced any symptoms of coronavirus in the last 72 hours and provide contact information for the next 30 days.

Tourists must also fill out and print or download the “Electronic Ticket”, it can be filled out during border control, but it is recommended to fill it out 72 hours before the flight departure.

In addition, upon arrival in the Dominican Republic, random tests for coronavirus will be carried out at the airport, if the result is positive, the patient will be taken to a public medical facility.

Guests who test positive will be taken to a public health facility for monitoring.

Charco Azul Blue Lagoon in Gran Canaria – Get Up. Get Out. Get Lost.

My whole body tensed as it broke the surface of the pond. Cool, translucent water shocked my slightly sunburnt skin, still warm from the short hike from El Risco to Charco Azul.

It was worth it.

Small as it may be, the sapphire blue water of the Charco Azul (“Blue Pond” – definitely sounds better in Spanish) is worth a visit for anyone who finds themselves near El Risco in the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. The pond is easy enough to reach, with some lovely landscapes on the way and a perfect, picturesque place to take a solitary dip and cool down beneath the small waterfall.

The best time to visit Charco Azul is spring, when the waterfalls are still streaming, the water in the pond is still fresh and plenty and it’s neither too hot for the hike nor too cold to dive in.

Spring is also the perfect time to see Gran Canarias’s colorful vegetation on the short trek to the charco, like the vibrant red and orange poppies bursting to life, and my personal favorite, the yellow and coral blossoms blooming from the prickly pear cacti.

The charco is rarely inundated with people, but if you’re aiming for some quiet time try to go on a weekday when you’re more likely to have the little oasis all to yourself. If you set off in the morning, you’ll have the whole day to swim, have a siesta in the sun and enjoy a picnic lunch beside the trickling waterfall.

Once you reach the small village of El Risco, you´ll see a parking area just off the highway in front Bar Perdomo.  From there, signs point you toward the blue lagoon, though you can always ask the group of local old dudes gathered in front of the café enjoying the morning sunlight to point you in the right direction.

The short trek to Charco Azul only takes about 30-45 minutes for fit walkers and is easy enough to get to. You’ll first ascend through the pretty white village of El Risco, complete with vibrant bougainvillea and a few stray cats napping in sun puddles.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Erica | Get Lost! 🌍✈️✌ (@getup_getout_getlost) on

At the end of the village, you’ll turn left onto the path that goes through the barranco, the lush green ravine that will lead you to the lagoon. The walk is easy enough, though you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for drop offs and pinchy prickly pears. The path can be more or less visible in places, but as long as you head straight on you won’t get lost.

Soon enough you’ll reach a large, open area with massive, broad stone surfaces and a small pool, but that’s not what you’re here for, it’s just a sneak peek.

Continue on the path leaning toward the left. There are a few parts here where you’ll have to scramble along holding onto rock outcroppings, but considering the amount of families with young children who make it safely here and back, you should make it unscathed.

As the path came to an end at the beautiful, glittering pool backed up against the tall walls of the ravine, we took in the scenery and braced ourselves to dive in. We dipped our toes in knowing it was going to be cold in early spring…

But hey, you only live once right?

Chucking our clothes aside, we found the deepest part of the small, sapphire pool and jumped in, a shock of cold piercing our warm, sun kissed skin.

After a swim and some chattering teeth, we settled in for our picnic lunch and whiled away the rest of that sunny spring afternoon to the soundtrack of the waterfall filling the pool — swimming, sunbathing and siestaing along the bank of the pond and on the small shelf just behind the pool. Aside from a group of spelunkers who ‘dropped by” — rappelling down the waterfall — we had the Charco Azul all to ourselves.

As the sun started to dip behind the high walls of the ravine, we gathered our things and made our way back to El Risco along the same path, arriving back to the village and Bar Perdomo just in time to watch the sky spark into pinks and oranges as it dipped down out of view and into the Atlantic.

Just another day in paradise.

The small village of El Risco along the northwestern coastal cliffs of Gran Canaria is the starting point for any trip to Charco Azul. From Bar Perdomo, just follow the signs for the short hike through the village and then the ravine toward the Charco Azul.

El Risco By Car

El Risco is just between the regions of Agaete and San Nicolas de la Aldea. From Las Palmas, take the windy coastal highway G-2 to Agaete and then follow the wild western coastal highway, GC-200. It should take about an hour, and while it’s not the scariest of the islands’ windy highways, it’s not the easiest either.

You can also reach El Risco from the south by travelling north along the west coast, but the highway here is even more windy and rugged and I’d only recommend it for confident drivers.

Once you reach Bar Perdomo, you can leave your car in the parking section reserved for visits to the Charco Azul at no cost. From there, follow the signs to the start of the trek.

El Risco By Bus

Buses to the western coast of Gran Canaria aren’t exactly the most convenient (read: pretty sucky), but if driving isn’t an option, you can take the Global Bus 105 from Las Palmas to Gáldar and then transfer to Global Bus 101 from Gáldar to El Risco. You’ll be dropped off right in front of Bar Perdomo where the trek to Charco Azul begins. If you time the transfer well, the bus journey should take about two hours.

Buses from the south to El Risco take an impossibly long time and frankly just aren’t worth it.

The Charco Azul is only just one of the charming destinations in Agaete and along the northwest coast. If you want to make a day of it, there are plenty of other local sights to enjoy along the way.

Visit the charming white washed town of Agaete and adjoining Puerto de las Nieves, where you can swim in the natural pools, have lunch on a sunny terrace or explore the ancient indigenous land at Maipés.

Trek down and take a dip in Playa Guayedra, a virgin beach just beyond the charming town of Agaete along the coastal highway.

Continue driving the coastal highway to stunning La Aldea de San Nicolas, the wild west of Gran Canaria.

Whether you decide to spend the whole day at Charco Azul or to combine the day trip with another wild west excursion, you’re sure not to be dissapointed. Get exploring!

Belize’s Great Blue Hole | X-Ray Mag

We jump into the water as a pair of bull sharks swim past. As we descend into the depths of the Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize, the light slowly dims. Bubbles from our regulators form silvery plumes that cascade to the surface.

At 60 feet (18m), there is a noticeable thermocline as we descend into cooler water.

When we reach 110 feet (33m), we see giant stalactites hanging from a limestone ledge. Slowly finning, we pass them in what amounts to a topless underwater cave. Because so little sunlight penetrates to this depth, we don’t see much evidence of life. Below us is a purple emptiness.

Jacques Cousteau popularized this dive after he anchored the Calypso here in 1972 and explored the Great Blue Hole. During the Ice Age, the hole was above sea level and part of a complex of underground caves. The roof of the hole collapsed. As the ice melted, the seas rose more than 300 feet (91m) and the cave became a sinkhole 1,000 feet (300m) across and more than 400 feet (122m) deep.

Seen in an aerial photograph, the Great Blue Hole looks like an eye – an unblinking, perfectly round blue iris in the midst of a coral reef. Not surprisingly, the Great Blue Hole has become Belize’s most famous dive site.

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is a tiny country wedged between Mexico and Guatemala below the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean side. It is protected by the second-largest barrier reef in the world, after Australia, making it a prime site for divers and snorkelers.

The Great Blue Hole is at Lighthouse Reef, the outermost of Belize’s three coral atolls about 60 miles (96 km) from the mainland. I was diving with Turneffe Flats Lodge, a fly-fishing and diving resort.

Non-divers came along for this adventure. They were able to snorkel the colorful reefs surrounding the Blue Hole and then visit a nature sanctuary.

Before our dive, Juan Vasquez, our dive master, sketched the Blue Hole on a white board and went over the dive plan and cautioned us about the hazards of deep diving.

The Great Blue Hole pushes the limits of sport diving. Divers descend to 130 feet (40m) or more, where the stay is limited to eight minutes to avoid decompression sickness.

Nitrogen narcosis, also called “rapture of the deep,’’ often affects divers who venture below about 120 feet (36m). It’s not unpleasant for many, like the buzz from a three-martini lunch. But “narced’’ divers have been known to die doing foolish things, like taking their regulators out of their mouths and handing them to fish.

Vasquez reminded us that good buoyancy control is essential in diving the Great Blue Hole. At about 60 feet (18m), water pressure causes divers to loose buoyancy. Without adding air to our buoyancy compensators, we could free-fall toward the bottom, over 400 feet (122m) down.

And of course you can always just run out of air. At 130 feet (40m), divers breathe five times as much air as on the surface – and it goes quickly. Vasquez dangled a spare tank and regulator 18 feet (5m) below the dive boat to make sure we would have enough air to make a five-minute safety stop at the end of the dive.

Despite the hazards, virtually all divers dive the Blue Hole safely. It is protected from currents and provides a safe learning environment for deep dives.

On the way back to the surface, we saw a spotted moray eel while the bull sharks circled past. After our safety stop and surfacing, we needed to take a long break to allow the nitrogen in our bodies to dissipate.

Our dive boat took us to Half Moon Caye, which looks like everyone’s vision of a tropical island: white sandy beaches with swaying palm trees and a patch of jungle inhabited by green and spiny-tailed iguanas.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch and a short hike through the jungle to a reserve for the nearly extinct red-footed boobies and more common frigate birds. An iguana gave us a stony gaze from its perch in a tree.

A ladder provided access to a viewing platform at treetop level, where we saw nesting boobies and frigates. It was mating season, and the male frigate birds inflated bright red neck pouches to impress the females.

The frigates wheeled over our heads, came in for awkward landings and panted in the steamy heat as they sat on their nests.

After the break, the snorkelers explored the water from shore while the boat took the scuba divers to a classic wall dive where we saw pristine coral, giant sponges, lobsters, purple sea fans and too many kinds of fish to list.

We cruised through underwater tunnels in the reef as colorful parrotfish filled the water with grinding sounds as they nibbled at the coral.

One of the divers, Rob Greene of Costa Mesa, said he counts the Great Blue Hole and surrounding water as one of the top 10 “must-dive’’ spots in the world. He was blown away by the variety of sea life and the pristine condition of the reefs.

The boat picked up the snorkelers, and we went to our final dive and snorkel spot: “The Aquarium.’’ Here in the shallow water, Vasquez opened a bag of bread underwater and was quickly surrounded by colorful yellow-tailed snappers.

I didn’t pass them my regulator. They seemed to be breathing underwater without any help.

Belize Blue Hole Scuba Diving

Blue Hole diving can feel like diving into a bottomless well or like a journey to the center of the earth. Divers descend into the hole, surrounded by unfamiliar, sheer, limestone walls, and in the depths they can imagine with trepidation that once, many millennia ago, it was a land cave in which ancient human ancestors could seek refuge. Scuba diving at Blue Hall offers an experience that cannot be experienced anywhere else, the water here is still and visibility reaches 60 meters (200 feet) with a very noticeable thermocline. In these deep waters of the Blue Hole, sharks can often be seen lurking – blacktip reef sharks, hammerhead sharks, and most often Caribbean reef sharks.

The circular reef is about 300 meters (1000 feet) across and some patches of coral come to the surface at low tide. Due to the depth required to explore this dive site, the time spent underwater is usually shorter for most divers.

How to get to the Blue Hole

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport is the main point of arrival in Belize with flights from all over the world. Many guests will then have to take a domestic flight to Belize City Municipal Airport, where divers can transfer to a short, 20-minute, domestic flight to Ambergris Cay leaving almost every hour.

5 Natural Attractions of Egypt

◁ Back to tours to Egypt

1. Blue Hole in the Red Sea (Dahab)

The Blue Hole is a unique geological formation near the Sinai coast of the Red Sea, not far from the city of Dahab, surrounded by beautiful underwater coral thickets a cave with almost sheer walls, vertically extending into the depths.
Thanks to the purest waters of the Red Sea, the Blue Hole is a mesmerizing sight. From the shore, the cave looks like a dark blue spot on the green-blue sea surface, like a gate to another world. However, the sun’s rays penetrate deep enough, and from the deck of the ship you can see how rich in living creatures the amazing underwater kingdom of the Blue Hole is.

2. Coral reefs (Red Sea)

The underwater world of the Red Sea is very rich. More than a thousand different species of fish and about 150 different types of corals live here on coral reefs. In the sea you can see giant turtles, moray eels, barracudas, dolphins, sharks and a huge number of tropical reef fish (Napoleon fish, clown fish, etc.). Well, you can’t write about the richness of colors and shapes of corals, because each reef is unique in its own way.

3. Colored Canyon (Nuweiba)

Colored Canyon is one of the many attractions located in Egypt. It is located in Sharm el-Sheikh, and to be exact, about 150 kilometers from the city itself. These are sandstone rocks of different colors – from white to blood red, interspersed with granite, cobalt, copper rocks and ancient corals. It is these color combinations that gave the name to the canyon. In some places, the rocks are painted very brightly with a pronounced metallic sheen, in others, the color of the stone is very gentle and warm. Here you can find sandstone of red, yellow, pink, gray, white, purple hues. To make sure that this place really exists and everything is as it is described, it’s not enough just to look at the photo – you need to visit it yourself.

The existence of the state is closely connected with the river, which gives life to the desert. Without the Nile, there would be no Egypt. The delta of the great river is the place where it flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The area of the delta is 24 thousand square kilometers. The beginning of the Nile takes on the Eastern Plateau of Africa. This water system is the longest on the planet.

Cruises on yachts and liners are organized along the waters of the great river. As you embark on a Nile tour, get ready to discover the hidden secrets of Egypt. After all, most of the cities are located in the coastal zone of the river. All excavations are carried out here, all the treasures of Egypt were discovered here. Don’t miss the opportunity to travel the Nile to bring back fond memories of these adventures. You will meet with hospitable people and the amazing fauna of the Nile.

5. White Desert (East Sahara)

Most tourists come to the Farafra Oasis to see the White Desert (Es-Sahra El-Beida), which is known for its spectacular scenery. The desert, white as chalk, is rich in outlandish formations and snow-white boulders that seem to stretch upward from the ground. At noon, when the sun rises high above the endless sands, the White Desert begins to shimmer with golden rays, and when the sky is covered with clouds, the white chalk darkens.

How to get around the Canary Islands

Canary Islands
Weather

The best way to get around the individual islands is to hire a car. The archipelago’s many winding roads are generally in excellent condition. Cars can be hired at any of the airports as well as in the larger towns and from resorts.

The islands’ are also excellent for cycling. Alternatively, each island operates a useful bus network to all the major towns and attractions. Taxis are generally expensive and are best for short distances only.

A fleet of fast ferries are good for hopping between adjacent islands, although flying is quicker.

The Canary Islands comprise seven main islands, (from large to small in size) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro; plus many smaller islands and islets.

Between islands

Air: Flying is the quickest option if you plan on island-hopping. Binter Canarias (www.bintercanarias.com) offers a comprehensive network with flights to all the Canary Islands.

Canary Fly (www.canaryfly.es) flies between Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, while Air Europa Express (www.aireuropa.com) offers services from Tenerife to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma.

Sea: Ferries and jetfoils connect all the islands and provide a reasonably quick and easy way to hop from one island to the next. While the major routes have numerous boats each day, the less common routes should be booked in advance.

Naviera Armas (www.navieraarmas.com), Acciona Trasmediterranea (www.trasmediterranea.es), and Fred Olsen (www.fredolsen.es) are the main operators, with numerous services between the islands as well as to and from the Spanish mainland.

The main ferry routes, include Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, taking 2hrs 30mins; Agaete (Gran Canaria) – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, taking 1hr 30mins; Arrecife (Lanzarote) Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), taking 8hrs; Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) – Morro Jable (Fuerteventura), taking 2-3hrs; Los Cristianos (Tenerife) – San Sebastián de la Gomera, taking 45mins; Los Cristianos (Tenerife) – Valverde (El Hierro), taking 3hrs; and Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) – Corralejo (Fuerteventura), taking 30mins.

Schedules on secondary routes can and do change for a variety of reasons. If time is tight, flying is a much faster alternative (often with competitive prices).

On land

Motorways and major roads are of a high standard with smooth surfaces and clear markings. Mountain roads are often narrow and winding, and some surfaces can be rough in the more rural regions. There are also unpaved rural roads.

Car hire: All the major international car-rental companies are represented in the Canary Islands, including Avis (www.avis.es), Budget (www.budget.es), Hertz (www.hertz.es) and Europcar (www.europcar.es). There are also numerous local operators, including Cicar (www.cicar.com), a well-regarded company that operates on all the islands.

To hire a car you need a valid driving licence, be aged 21 or over and have a credit card. Visitors with a non-EU licence should also have an International Driving Permit (IDP), however national licences from countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA are usually accepted.

In general, you’re not allowed to take a hire car from one island to another without the company’s explicit permission. An exception for most companies is the Fuerteventura–Lanzarote sea crossing – most have no problem with you taking your car from one to the other and, in some cases, you can hire on one island and drop the car off on the other.

It’s a good idea to reserve in advance during high season or on the smaller islands where hire cars aren’t as plentiful.

Third-party motor insurance is a minimum requirement in the Canary Islands. Be careful to understand what your liabilities and excess are, and what waivers you are entitled to in case of accident or damage to the hired vehicle.

Larger international car-rental firms such as Avis tend to have a comprehensive vehicle insurance policy built into the quote, so you are pretty well covered for damage to the car, but check when you hire.

Note: Driving on a dirt road may render your policy null and void, so check with the car-hire firm.

Legal driving age for motorcycles and scooters is 16 (80cc and over) or 15 (50cc and under) years; a licence is required. Motorcyclists must use headlights at all times and wear a helmet if riding a bike of 125cc or more.

Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. The speed limit in built-up areas is 50kph (31mph), increasing to 100kph (62mph) on major roads and up to 120kph (74mph) on autovías (motorways).

Taxi: Taxis are one of the most expensive ways to get around the Canary Islands. However, they can be useful for getting to and from the airport and around town. Taxis are regulated, have metres and you can flag them down on the street.

Bus: Buses – known locally as guaguas (and pronounced ‘wa-wa’) – are the most common form of public transport in the Canary Islands.

The most efficient services are found on the bigger islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and operate to all the major towns and popular tourist attractions during weekdays, but services are less-frequent on weekends.

In the larger towns and cities, buses leave from the estación de guaguas (bus station), while in villages and small towns, they usually terminate on a particular street or plaza. You buy your ticket on the bus.

The following bus companies provide a comprehensive network of routes in their respective islands, including Global (www.guaguasglobal.com) in Gran Canaria, Guagua Gomera (www.guaguagomera.com) on La Gomera, Intercity Bus (www.arrecifebus.com) on Lanzarote, Tiadhe (tiadhe.com) on Fuerteventura, TITSA (www.titsa.com) on Tenerife, TransHierro (www.transhierro.com) on El Hierro, and Transportes Insular La Palma Services (www.tilp.es) on La Palma.

On some of the islands you can buy a bus card for €2, which then provides a discount off the fare. On Tenerife, the card is called a Ten+ Travel Card, and offers a fare saving of around 30% depending on the route. On other islands, the card – where it exists – is called a Bono Transport card, and offers a 5% discount on Fuerteventura and 10% on Lanzarote.

The cards can be topped up in increments from a minimum of €5. You can buy them at bus stations and shops (such as newsagents). Usually you touch the card to the reader on the bus, tell the driver where you are going, and the fare will be deducted from the card. With the Ten+ Travel Card on Tenerife, you tap in and tap out (remember to tap out or you will pay the full fare for the line). You can usually share a card with a fellow traveller.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a Live bus pass (www.guaguas.com/tarifas-carnets/tarjeta-turistica) for use on city routes: a one-day unlimited travel card is €5, and a three-day unlimited travel card is €12. The card is available from tourist offices and bus stations in the city.

Fares throughout the Canary Islands are reasonable; destinations within each island are calculated according to distance: ticket fares vary from €1 for a short city hop to €10 or so for journeys of more than an hour (on the larger islands). La Palma has introduced a standardised fixed bus distance tariff: up to 10km (€1. 50), 10km to 20km (€2.40) and over 20km (€2.60).

It pays to have small notes and coins as change, as the bus driver may not be able to break a large note.

Train: The only train link in the Canary Islands is a light-rail tram that runs from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to San Cristobal de La Laguna in Tenerife, a distance of 12.5km (7.8mi).

Bicycle: The Canary Islands are cycle friendly, and cycling is a very pleasant (and healthy) way to get around and see the sights. Local drivers are generally tolerant and patient with cyclists, although on narrow and hilly roads some drivers may become impatience.

Only Las Palmas has cycle lanes and beachside roads are starting to incorporate space for bike riding.

You can hire mountain bikes, city bikes and e-bikes at numerous bike shops and certain resorts in the more tourist-orientated areas of the islands. Expect to pay a minimum of €12 per day, with a standard deposit of around €50. Rental rates typically include a helmet and some basic equipment. Some rental outfits offer guided bike tours.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there is a public bike hire scheme called Sitycleta; look for the yellow and blue bikes dotted in stations around the city.

Taking your bike on ferries is pretty straightforward, and the good news is it’s either free or very inexpensive.

Getting there

Daily flights from Europe to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife are available with different airlines. Flight times from the UK are around four and half hours. Flight connections to the Canary islands from outside Europe are via mainland Spain.

Getting around

Car hire is the most popular and recommended option with a good number of car rental companies present on the islands. The roads are well sign posted and a Sat Nav (GPS) always comes in handy.

Public transport consists of bus routes on Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife which also has a metropolitan tram. Check timetables as they don’t run 24/7.

Inter-island connections are possible with flights and ferries.

When to go

Given their sub-tropical climate, the Canary Islands are an all-year-round destination, with temperatures around 18C in winter and close to 30C during summer. Late spring and early autumn offer the mildest weather whereas July and August are the hottest months. The busiest time for visitors is from November until Easter with tourists predominantly coming from Europe. Summer is most popular with tourists from mainland Spain.

Do’s and Don’ts

You’ll find very welcoming people in the Canary Islands as they have been helping tourists get around for a long time.

While basic English is generally spoken, don’t assume people will understand you; it’s always useful to have a few basic Spanish phrases to hand. The islands are known for their low crime; a common sense approach is recommended when taking care of your personal belongings and money.

Shopping

There is no VAT in the Canary Islands so all goods and services tend to be cheaper than in mainland Spain. Goods are not exempt from import VAT on your return. For guidance on what you can and can’t bring into the UK click here.

Although you can find shopping centres on the Canaries we recommend high-street shopping as a way to enjoy different towns and villages and mix up with the locals. Some shops will be closed around lunchtime (2 pm – 4 pm).

Currency

As in the rest of Spain, the Canary Islands’ currency is the EURO. Major credit cards are widely accepted and ATM machines can be found around quite easily. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked for ID when using your card as it’s customary. It is advisable to carry cash in smaller villages.

Phones

The Canary Islands have an extensive GSM. Do check with your phone company about roaming charges before travelling. Public telephones accept pre-paid cards which you can buy at shops and newsstands.

Electricity

220/240 AC volts with Euro type plugs. For other plug types an adaptor will be required.

Health

Tap water is safe for drinking. Bottled mineral water is widely available.

Religion

Main religion is Roman Catholic. Other faiths are respected.

Language

Main language is Spanish. English is widely spoken in touristic areas, followed by German.

Local Time

Canary Islands time zone is GMT, same as UK and Ireland.

Visa and Passports

As in the rest of Spain, EU nationals can enter with an ID card or a passport. For some other countries, entry into Spain requires a passport which is valid for at least three months beyond the length of your stay and issued within the last 10 years. For citizens from countries who require a visa these can be obtained from the Spanish embassy or consulate in your own country.

For more info on visa regulations in Spain click here.

Food and Drink

Canary Islands cuisine owes to both Latin American and mainland Spain, followed by Africa. Popular coastal eats include grilled fish such as bream and sea bass. Whilst inland, the Guachinches -the name for restaurants serving traditional authentic island food- offer tasty grilled beef and pork dishes. The famous papas arrugadas (‘wrinkly potatoes’) are enjoyed both as an appetizer and as a side. Gofio, a flour created by grinding roasted sweetcorn, used to be the staple food for centuries and it’s still very common in some dishes. Mojo rojo and mojo verde are two widely-known sauces ideal which can accompany any dish.

Description

“Colored Mountain” Montaña Colorada , which was the result of the last eruption of Timan 17,6, which occurred in the year Timanfa.

Montaña Colorada fully justifies its name, its slopes are painted in red, gray orange colors and shades.

Montaña Colorada is located in the eastern part of the Timanfaya Natural Park and is part of the Volcanoes Park, which covers 10,000 hectares.

The height of the mountain is about 100 meters.

Colorado Volcano Crater is ideal for hiking and walking tours. During the journey, you can enjoy the beautiful landscape, the play of colors on the slopes of the mountain. The mountain changes its color depending on the time of day and the weather.

A hiking trail runs around the mountain. The trail is equipped with information stands where you can read the history of the place, learn more about the local flora and fauna.

Also near Mount Colorada you can see a unique phenomenon – volcanic bombs, stones up to 7 meters high and weighing about 50 tons. They were created during a volcanic eruption, when huge masses of volcanic rock erupted from a crater under great pressure and solidified into stone spheres. They give an idea of the power of the elements.

Entrance to the hiking trail is free. The walk along the route takes about an hour.

For a walk, you should choose comfortable closed shoes and take care of the supply of water.

Mount Colorada or Montana Colorada is one of Lanzarote’s most scenic natural attractions. Its slopes are painted in gray, red and orange and look very picturesque. The height of the mountain is small, only 100 meters above sea level. There is a hiking trail around Montaña Colorada . Close to Montana Colorada you can see another attraction – the Gude volcanic bomb.

Roads in the Canary Islands: Tenerife and Lanzarote
Roads in the Canary Islands are all good, asphalt, no potholes. Moreover, behind Villaflor, we observed a situation where a new layer of ideal asphalt was laid on top of the ideal asphalt of the old road.
Apparently they rolled up the budget by the end of the year in order to get at least the next one . In the villages, too, mostly asphalt. There is a high-speed (up to 120 km per hour) multi-lane Autopista TF-1 highway from the capital Santa Cruz to the south. However, please note that there are traffic jams in places on the expressway! Usually in the morning and evening at rush hour, when people travel to the capital and back, there is a high-speed TF-1 traffic jam starting from Los Americas, Los Cristianos and up to the capital Santa Cruz. Cars are concentrated in the area of populated areas, where there are exits from the highway, between villages in a freer way. But the average speed of movement along this route drops to 60 km/h due to traffic jams. Keep this in mind, especially when you go to the airport. Since we also left and returned during rush hours, we tried not to go to the TF1 highway, we turned onto alternative roads above or below the highway (if there were any), especially since there is nothing interesting on the highway, and all the most interesting is just on internal roads, and traffic jams were not observed there.
The roads in Tenerife are mountainous, there are serpentines, steep and not very steep. The most difficult section we encountered – this part of the road to Maska has a steep serpentine, several kilometers long, from the south. The road in this section is narrow and there are very sharp turns, you need to drive slowly and as carefully as possible, two cars pass without problems, incl. and a bus, but the difficulty is that the drivers of oncoming cars feel badly about the dimensions of the car and fly out into the oncoming lane (the British, what to take from them), on the forehead, and even at a decent speed. Often drivers lose their vigilance because of the beauty of these places, get distracted by looking at the gorges, keep this in mind and be on the lookout. In general, on the roads of Tenerife, we can say that they are clearly not for green beginners, but they cannot be called particularly difficult either. Move within the rules, do not rush, think with your head and there will be no problems. We did not experience discomfort on the road. They moved at the speed of the stream. The average speed on the mountain roads of Tenerife is about 50 km/h.
According to reviews, a dangerous road also goes to Cape Teno, but we didn’t get there. At the entrance to Cape Teno, there is a sign that now private cars are not allowed there on all days. You can drive freely only on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. On other days, travel is allowed only for taxis and buses from 10.00 to 17.00. Based on the text of the announcement and communication with the employee at the barrier, you can go any day before 10.00 and after 17.00. You can take the bus in the village closest to Cape Teno, in which the barrier of the road to Cape Teno is located, the ticket is 1 euro. Local authorities replenish their budget in this way.

The roads in Tenerife are very picturesque and well-maintained. When driving along them, be sure to stop at the numerous observation platforms on the road itself and on the lapels and lay extra time for this.
!NB: remember that people often steal from the lookouts, don’t leave valuables in the car even for a second.
The most beautiful roads in the central part of Tenerife, in the north of Tenerife and in the western part to the area of Maski. We tried to drive on different roads, especially those roads that lead to the Teide volcano. The landscapes are varied and magnificent. There are 4 main roads leading to Teide – 2 from the north and 2 from the south. Stunning in beauty and the road passing through the center of the Teide Park – TF21. Very beautiful roads in the Anaga Natural Park area and the entire western coast, where the road winds over the sea. A detailed description of the sights of each of the roads and our recommendations on how to see all the most beautiful in a small number of days, read in the descriptions by day. When preparing for the trip, most of the time was spent precisely on compiling a convenient guide along the route and not missing anything, since each of the roads is literally stuffed with interesting things.

There is a garden near the hotel, a lot of tropical trees, a beautiful swimming pool, a delicious breakfast, a beautiful view of El Teide. Great for a family with small children for two nights. Nice square nearby. nine0226

The rooms are too small for 4 people, one of us slept on the couch while we paid for a 4 bed family room with beds.

Current satellite and rain images for La Palma Island, Spain

The location marker is placed on La Palma Island. [More]

The real-time satellite image combines visible light during daytime with infrared radiation during nighttime. At night, the image is not dark as infrared radiation can detect temperature differences. Unfortunately, low clouds and fog are difficult to distinguish from ground temperatures and thus can be almost invisible during the night. Meteosat satellite images for Europe are updated in real-time every 5 minutes. GOES-16/GOES-17 (North & South America) and Himawari (Asia) images update every 10 minutes.

Precipitation is estimated from radar and satellites. Precipitation estimates from satellites are less accurate at night than during daytime. Orange crosses mark places where lightning was detected (over Europe).
