31ºC in the shade this weekend on Gran Canaria, with a touch of Calima to end October : The Canary
The Canary Islands have been enjoying some very pleasant October weather with clear skies with just a few intervals of cloud, daytime highs of around 27ºC and night time lows of around 20ºC. The westernmost islands are a little cooler, with lows of around 17-18ºC in La Palma and El Hierro.
However, the thermometers look set to rise as we approach the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday and next week, as we head into November, the temperatures across the Canary Islands archipelago will approach 30ºC, in the shade despite already being the middle of autumn.
Forecasts for Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October look forward to daytime highs of between 29º and 26º during the middle of the day on all the islands, with the exception of El Hierro, where 23 to 24ºC is more likely.
This weather, according to the State Meteorological Agency, is “very unusual for the season” and is expected to continue until the middle of next week, on Tuesday, November 1 or Wednesday, November 2, when thermometers will begin to fall once more and return to normal expected values for the autumn period.
Weather forecasts based on the European prediction model determine that the temperatures will not be quite so hot: the Windy.com website predicts that the province of Las Palmas will exceed 25ºC, but Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be some degrees below that temperature.

The warmest October in history in Spain? The heat will tend to intensify more on the Iberian Peninsula, where maximums above 30ºC are expected. Spanish State Meteorological Agency AEMET is confident that this October could be “the warmest in Spain in the historical series” and that “the clearly warmer than normal conditions will probably continue in the first fortnight of November”. These high temperatures look set to be accompanied by Calima from North Africa, which will affect both the Canary Islands and the south of the Peninsula. According to ElTiempo.es, more typical “of the first fortnight of June.”

From Thursday cloudy or clear skies, with morning intervals of low clouds on the north and east coasts, and intervals of high cloud by the end of the day. Probable Calima haze, expected to be quite light. Temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly. 30ºC in the shade, inland on the southern slopes is likely. Light wind prevailing from the northeast. At summits, however, southwest winds can be expected.
By Friday intervals of high cloud to start the day. Calima haze, generally light. Temperatures slightly rising, reaching or exceeding 30 ºC inland on the southern slopes. Light winds from the north to northeast, with moderate intervals on the southeast and northwest slopes during the early and late hours of the day. At the summits, light to moderate winds from the south.
On Saturday some high cloud during the first half of the day. Calima, moving from east to west, somewhat lighter in the westernmost islands. Temperatures will see few changes except for slight local increases, especially on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Generally light winds, predominantly northerly and easterly. At the summits, winds from the south to southwest, increasing in the afternoon.
Across the Canary Islands, this Sunday, the trade winds are likely to be restored, with some intervals of low cloud on the north of the islands and a predominance of slightly cloudy skies elsewhere. Temperatures are likely to start to drop.
As we head into next week uncertainty increases, it is likely that the Canary Islands archipelago, with trade winds re-established and continuing over the following few days, low clouds to the north of the islands fo greater relief, may also bring a low probability of precipitation. Slightly cloudy skies will prevail on the rest of the islands. Temperatures look set to remain fairly stable and without major changes during the period.
Ultraviolet index should remain firmly at around 6, mid scale, which is pretty normal for this time of year meaning we see many less sun burn victims walking around on holiday, nonetheless sunscreen is strongly advised.

Siam Mall and Golden Mile
Tenerife attracts many shopping and shopping enthusiasts. For them, we have compiled a rating of the best shopping centers on the main Canary island.
Read more about shopping in Tenerife here.
Siam Mall
The most popular mall for buying clothes, shoes and accessories in the south of Tenerife. There are many shops of famous brands such as Zara, Timberland, Mango, H&M and others. Siam Mall is located in the south of the island in the Las Americas region, next to the Siam Park water park. There are always a lot of tourists, but there are no crowds. It’s better to come in the morning. Siam Mall has several cafes, a HiperDino grocery store and playgrounds.
Golden Mile in Las Americas
A popular shopping center in the south of Tenerife. There are always a lot of tourists because of the location. The Golden Mile is the name of the Avenida de las Americas between Las Americas and Los Cristianos.
Avenue – a whole ensemble of shops and boutiques. There are budget brands a la Mango, Pull & Bear, Stradivarius, Zara and expensive Prada, Armani, Hugo Boss, Gucci. The main shopping center of the Golden Mile is Safari. Each store here operates according to its own schedule. Many are open until late in the evening, so you can take your time on the Safari.
Grand Sur
Shopping center in the south of Tenerife in the usual form for Russians. Many shops, cafes and supermarkets are gathered under one roof. There is a free Wi-Fi hotspot in Grand Sur. Minus: the choice of clothes is poorer than in Siam Mall and the Golden Mile. Grand Sur is located next to Torviscas, exit 30 from Autopisti SUR.
El Corte Ingles
El Corte Ingles is a chain of department stores throughout Spain. In Tenerife, it is popular with visitors to the northern part of the island. Goods are not cheap, but high quality.
On the top floor are children’s clothing stores, one floor below is men’s clothing, and below is a women’s paradise. On the ground floor of the shopping center there is a large supermarket of products and delicacies.
Don’t forget to get the El Corte Inglés 10 percent discount coupon for foreigners.
Merediano and Carrefour
Large shopping center with inexpensive but well-known brands. There are many good products in the Carrefour hypermarket. Works since 9-00 to 22-00. Carefour is easy to find: take the exit next to the exit for Tenerife North Airport from the South Autobahn, signposted Centro Commercial. Next to the Media Markt electronics store with gadgets and home appliances.
Plaza del Duque
Beautiful shopping center located in the expensive part of the Costa Adeje tourist area. If you are looking for budget brands, then Plaza del Duc is a waste of time. Expensive shopping for wealthy tourists of the island of Tenerife and guests of four-star hotels near El Duc beach.
Alcampo La Laguna
Shopping center known for inexpensive food and clothing shopping. Alcampo is French Auchan in Spain. Large hypermarket, one of the most affordable prices in all of Tenerife. In Spain, stores like Auchan bear little resemblance to ours. In Tenerife, in Auchan, high quality products, no crowds, good service and a huge selection.
Nearby is the largest sports store – Decathlon.
Auchan and Decathlon are easy to find, the exit is 5 kilometers after the turn from the Southern Autobahn to La Laguna.
Carrefour
In the capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is another shopping center Carrefour. Its official name is Centro Commercial Santa Cruz. Large selection of products from all over Europe and simple shops. Unpretentious. Media Markt, a large home appliances store, is located next to the Carefour shopping center.
Alcampo – La Villa
Another Auchan in the north. If you are in the Puerto de la Cruz area, you can stop by this mall with free parking. It’s not worth coming here from the south.
Tres de Mayo
Shopping center with free parking next to El Corte Ingles in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
La Tejita Street Market
Tiny shopping center on La Tejita beach next to El Medano. Built for neighboring real estate complexes. There is a Dialprix supermarket, several shops and cafes. We recommend trying the Indian restaurant Bombay Babu.
We will be adding new Tenerife shops and malls to this list. Stay tuned for updates and share your shopping experience in the comments.

We teach both individual and group classes, and, in order to maintain our high levels of effectiveness, our groups are limited to 8 students. Our teaching timetable is from 9 a.m to 6 p.m., so if you wish to immerse yourself in learning Spanish you can do so. We are located in new and modern premises where it is our hope that our students feel comfortable during the time they spend with us.
Our classrooms are fully equipped and, from your first day with us, our staff will do everything possible to make you feel like a member of the Desilena family.
During breaks students can rest, have tea or coffee, practice Spanish with other students, or use the library. Internet access is available and students can either use their own devices using our WiFi signal, or the school computers which are at their disposal.
However, the most important thing is that in our school we have qualified teachers, with experience in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and you will see progress from the first day. Alongside learning vocabulary and grammar, through our teachers, you will come to know something of the culture, gastronomy and the spirit of the Spanish people.
In addition, we offer a variety of extracurricular activities, such as dance, culture, films, cooking classes… in which we enjoy sharing our love of Spanish with you. If your enrolment is active, the weekly activities in the school are free for you. If you are not a Desilena’s student, the price per activity will be 5€.
We love what we do, and because of this, we ask our students to complete questionnaires during their courses at our school so we can discover firsthand if there is anything we need to improve.
If you are still not sure, do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. We will be happy to pass on our passion for Spanish.

Parque Nacional del Teide – Teide National Park
The great wonder of Tenerife is its nature, it is the Teide. This dormant volcano is a magical place that transports us to an almost prehistoric and purer world. The park covers 190 sq. km and includes the volcano and the surroundings. It is both a Unesco World Heritage Site and Spain’s most popular national park. Spectacular views, hiking trails through volcanic terrain… it is a magical place to visit.

Im a ship enthusiast, I was borne and live in Madeira, an island limited by the lack of maritime transport links to
the Portuguese mainland, also it is extremely expensive to transport merchandises to the island also caused by the lack of
appropriate infrastructures. I Intend to reveal the problems faced here in Madeira by providing you with images and useful
information. I Also encourage everyone to contribute, donations would be highly appreciated.

Semana de Flores, Flower week in Gáldar. Photo Ayuntamiento de Gáldar It’s the weekend before most foreign residents (and visitors) celebrate their Yuletime dinners and get-togethers. Of course here in Spain, and on the Canary Islands, December 25th is a day of simple, quiet contemplation with the main gift giving days being 12th night, the epiphany, January 5th & 6th, in celebration of the Day of the Three Kings, so for Canary Islanders there is still plenty of time of Christmas shopping to be done. This year the 25th forms part of a ‘puente’, a bridge weekend as it falls on a Sunday, and so Monday (Boxing Day to all you Brits) is a Public Holiday in Spain.

The magistrate at Contentious-Administrative Court 4 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has ordered Mogán Town Hall to immediately open a new file to restore urban legality altered by Waikiki restaurant bar, illegally built by the Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria Sailing School, more than twenty years ago. The establishment is in clear violation of Coastal Law, by invading the maritime-terrestrial public domain. In 2003, a demolition order was issued, which the local town hall administration did not act on and allowed to sit unenforced until it was declared as being prescribed (meaning it could no longer be enforced). They town hall failed to impose any coercive fines on the company behind the construction, Dinije Inversiones, nor did the local council demand the restaurant’s demolition, as ordered by the courts.

When we chose the island of Tenerife as our winter destination, the Teide volcano was clearly a factor. It must be said that this 3718m mastodon is not lacking in interest! It is nevertheless the highest peak in Spain and its volcanic / lunar landscapes leave no one indifferent. As you might expect, it is also an ideal playground for the nature and hiking enthusiasts that we are;). And then volcanoes have always left us with very strong impressions when travelling, as in Indonesia on the Rinjani, Ijen and Bromo, or in South America with Cotopaxi in Ecuador or Parinacota in Bolivia. No wonder that we wanted to come and discover Tenerife and its Teide!
In this article, we will share with you our experience of the Teide National Park and give you some tips / hiking ideas to discover it in its most beautiful aspects.

The Teide volcano and its national park
Attention!!! Minute Wikipedia 😉
When you have such a marvel on your island you might as well protect it (and protect yourself too since Teide is an active volcano and its last eruption dates back to 1909). The area around the Teide and its caldera is therefore protected by a national park that covers about 1/10 of the entire area of the island of Tenerife. It is also one of the oldest national parks in Spain and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007… No wonder there are so many people visiting it (more than 3 million tourists per year)
une petit animation via Wikimedia Commons
If you look at an image of the Teide taken from above, you will notice that the volcano is actually surrounded by a kind of large basin at 2000m altitude (the caldera) and that it is more or less the surface of this basin that is protected by the national park. Looking at this image, you may also think that the volcano seems truncated and you are right. In fact the original volcano was even bigger (something like 4500m) and collapsed a long time ago on itself forming the caldera. Teide and Pico viejo in their current form only came later.
End of minute Wikipedia 😉
There are 3 ways to visit the Teide National Park:
By car: The only road that crosses the park (the TF-21) is spectacular and we really recommend that you do it at least once.
With a tour: Many tour companies offer different day trips to the national park. Some involve hiking, others are more for taking pictures. See the tours
On foot: There are many hiking trails through the park and it is them that will allow you to discover all the facets of the Teide away from the crowd.
Here are two maps of Teide National Park that may be useful to you.
Camper Van
We didn’t do it in Tenerife, but since we bought our van the Dahu, we really want to come back to Tenerife and discover the area by van. The island lends itself really well if you want our opinion. 🙂
If you want to rent one directly on the island (probably the easiest solution), then you can go to the website Yescapa. They offer camper vans rented directly by van owners (with all required insurances). You could also check the Campstar website which compares the offers of the main vans/RVs rental companies.
Iy you need more infos about how to rent a Campervan or a Motorhome, you can also check our guide about this topic below

The weather on Teide
Tenerife has a little nickname: the island of eternal spring. So even this reputation is rather well founded (it is 20-30 degrees all year round and at the seaside there is almost no season), it is not possible to summarize the weather in Tenerife so easily.
The simple fact of having such a large volcano in Tenerife creates strange weather phenomena (microclimates) and the weather can be completely different a few kilometres away on the island. For example, the south of the island is generally sunnier but also much drier and desert-like than the north, which is much greener. It is also very common to see clouds forming very locally (for example in La Laguna where it often rains) and a few kilometres further away the sun shines.
above the clouds on teide
But there is a constant in Tenerife is that if you go up to the Teide, when you pass the height of the great pine forest that surrounds the caldera, you will be above the clouds and there is a good chance that you will be under the sun (in the 2 months we have been in Tenerife it must have rained only once on top… or better said, it snowed).
Mount Teide covered in snow
The Teide is also the only place on the island where you can really observe the seasons. It is not uncommon for the volcano to cover itself with snow in winter (because of the “small drop” in temperatures:) and in spring you can observe many endemic plant species that flower and are found nowhere else.
One last thing to know is the temperatures. Given the enormous difference in altitude between the sea and the top of the Teide, be aware that it can be very cool in the morning and evening in the national park. For example, I remember leaving one morning early to go hiking and it must have been 5 degrees at 2000m in the park (then as soon as the sun shines it is immediately 15-20 degrees). Or when we climbed to the top of the Teide, it was almost 0 degrees up there at sunrise! The conclusion is that it is better to have several layers to be able to dress according to the temperature.
Accomodation in Tenerife
We talk more about the best places to stay in Tenerife (in our opinion) on this page. In the Teide Park itself, there are not many options except for the Parador del Teide (a hotel that is located at the top of the park and not far from the beginning of the hike). The night costs about 100€ for 2 people, but it must be quite exceptional to spend the night up there (especially if you want to go out to admire the stars!

Visit the Teide national Park by car (or by bus)
To get a first glimpse of the Teide, there’s nothing like a little road trip through the park on the magnificent TF-21 road that crosses the caldera from side to side. To make it easier for you, we have prepared a small interactive map with the main points of interest not to be missed.
Whether you are going up to the Teide from the south or the north, I really advise you to stop already at the different points of view that you will encounter on the roadside before entering the national park. The vegetation below 2000m is completely different and you will first cross a magnificent pine forest that covers the flanks of the Teide. The view of the Teide volcano is spectacular in some places.
Once in the park, there are several very interesting places where you can park and explore (let’s assume that you arrive on the Laguna – Orotava side for order. You will find all these points on the map):
Minas de San Jose
Minas de San Jose: A very beautiful part of the park where the landscapes are a little less rocky and where you can go for a walk on the volcanic sand. The opportunity to hike on another planet!
Montana blanca: A small car park at the beginning of the path that climbs to the top of the Teide by the south side. Even if the car park is more designed for people who go up to the Teide, there is also a way to make shorter and more difficult walks from this point.
The cable car: Parking at the lower station of the Teide cable car. We’ll give you more information about the cable car a little further down.
Roques de Garcia: It is the largest car park in the Teide National Park and it is also the beginning of a pretty 3-4km loop around funny rock formations. We’ll give you more details about this hike below. The car park is generally crowded (there are quite a few tourist buses that stop there) but if you have the courage to walk a little, you will quickly be on your own.
Narices del Teide: Change of scenery to arrive in the black volcanic rock that testifies to the last big eruption of Pico Viejo in 1798 (you will see very clearly the flow from this point). There too you will find a small car park which is the starting point for the hike to get to the Pico Viejo, which we will talk about below.
Montana Samara: Located a little lower than the Narices del Teide car park, this point is an ideal starting point for walks in a part of the park where pines grow on volcanic sand (with a very beautiful view of the Pico Viejo and the Teide). It is a magnificent part of the park not to be missed under any circumstances.
Roques de Garcia
Hikes in the Teide National Park
Well the car is very nice but let’s be honest, to fully and especially more quietly discover the lunar landscapes of the Teide National Park, you will have to use your legs a bit ;). Below we have prepared a list (which will probably grow even more) of beautiful hikes to do around and on the Teide volcano.
las Roques de Garcia
This is a nice walk that you can easily do during a day of road trip in the national park. The trail starts at the large Roques de Garcia car park and goes around funny rock formations with a very beautiful view of the Teide and Caldera. Don’t worry too much about the crowd that is building up in the parking lot, as soon as you have walked 500m, you will be quiet! The well-designed trail begins flat along the right-hand side of the rock formations to an information sign. The trail then becomes narrower while continuing in the same direction to reach a crossroads. Do not take the path that climbs to the right to the top of the Pico Viejo (well, if you want, you can of course;)) but return by the path that goes down to the left to a plateau. Finally, the path goes up to the car park, passing to the left of a large rock called “the cathedral”.
Hiking on Pico Viejo
our friend Faustine on top of pico viejo
Now I warn this hike is a whole different level than the previous one, it is better to count the day to do this loop without too much haste. Moreover, it is still better to be in good physical condition because it is 14km long with more than 1000m of climbing and descending and it is very hot! (but it’s well worth it:))
The path begins at the Narices del Teide car park and you must follow the number 9 indicated on the signs and on the first map you find at the top of the article. The trail begins by descending along the TF-38 from a distance into the black volcanic rock of the last eruption of Pico Viejo. After a little over a kilometre, you reach an area with a few trees and then an information sign indicating the Pico Viejo on the right.
This is where the serious things start and we start the climb to Pico Viejo. First, we cross an area dotted with bushes and plants. Then, as the climb progresses, the vegetation disappears and gives way to lunar landscapes. We pass Chio Mountain and if we turn around and the weather is clear, we can see the island of La Gomera which seems to float away over the ocean. You arrive at a crossroads that allows you to either go up to the left to the Pico Viejo crater via “el Calderon” or to the right via the “Teide nostrils”. We chose the right path but in any case the two meet at the crater of Pico Viejo.
The ascent continues even more so. We pass over the “Teide nostrils” where the last big eruption of Pico Viejo took place. It is easy to imagine the violence with which the lava came out of there and then descended to the city of Guarachico. The climb is quite tiring because we walk on a kind of sand / volcanic rock. By exaggerating, it’s a bit like walking two steps forward to move back one step.
We then go around the crater of Pico Viejo on the right to see the Teide rising in front of us. We pass a path that climbs to the left until the southern peak of the crater (I advise you to go there because it is a very nice viewpoint on the crater with the Teide as a backdrop). We continue to arrive behind the crater until we reach a crossroads. We do not take the main path which continues to climb up to the Pico Viejo viewpoint and the Teide summit but we take a left to reach the Pico Viejo summit.
For the descent, we go around the crater by the same path as on the ascent. Once above the “Teide nostril” we take this time on the left to pass just below the nostril crater. Then we reach for a short moment the path taken on the ascent to go down to the left directly to the car park, passing through the middle of the black rock flow. As the terrain is quite soft, the descent is much faster and less tiring than the climb.
Hiking Teide (Teide summit)
Obviously, climbing the Teide to watch the sunrise from the top was one of the things I absolutely wanted to do in Tenerife. The view from the summit is absolutely incredible, above the sea of clouds and you can observe the triangular shadow of the Teide which projects itself into the distance during sunrise and sunset.
hiking teide by night to see the sunrise from the top
So it is certainly a good climb of 1300-1400m from the car park to the peak of the Teide. But the path is extremely well marked out and does not represent any technical difficulty at all. On the other hand, there are some unexpected points that can make this ascent more complicated than expected. So I wrote a complete article about the ascent of the Teide and the various ways to reach its summit (this article is already too long;)) but here is in summary what you need to know if you want to climb to the peak of the Teide:
From 9am onwards, a permit is required to complete the last part of the ascent to Teide (from the cable car arrival station to the summit). So even if I knew that a permit was needed, what I didn’t know was that you have to book it months in advance because there are so many applications! The permit is free and can easily be booked here but personally I didn’t want to book a date 2 months in advance with the uncertainty of the weather. This gave me the opportunity to climb to the top of the Teide before 9am.
Most people go up in 2 days and sleep at the Altavista refuge to go to the top of the Teide at sunrise. This solution allows you to cut the hike in half and reach the top without a permit (before 9am)… the ideal solution a priori! Here too you can easily book your night at the refuge on this site (for about 20 euros which is rather cheap) but the refuge was full several weeks in advance… It is therefore impossible to book only a few days in advance to keep a little flexibility.
Do not underestimate the effects of altitude. So certainly the Teide is not at 6000m but if you spend your holidays by the sea, the difference in altitude with the summit is still huge (3700m). So get in quietly, drink a lot and if you don’t feel well, don’t insist! We are not all equal in the face of mountain sickness.
So to avoid having to apply for a permit and having to book at the refuge, we decided to go up to Teide by night from the Montana Blanca car park. So as you can read in this article, even if it’s still a good sport, the ascent of the Teide is going pretty well at night;)
Just go for the pleasure of the eyes, another small picture of my friends Faustine and Rémi at sunrise at the top of the Teide

The beautiful Samara hike
samara
This hike is our favorite in the Teide National Park…. Indeed, this small loop crosses a part of the park that is rarely visited and yet is really beautiful with its pines growing in the volcanic sand. In addition, this part of the park is south facing and we really advise you to come here in the second half of the afternoon to see the sunset:)
The loop starts at the parking lot of Samara. We take immediately to the right following the indications of path number 13 (which we will follow all along). The trail gently climbs through the pines with Montana de la Botija facing us and then goes around it to return to the starting point on the other side. Once you reach Montana de la Botija, you will see several paths that allow you to climb to the top, which I strongly recommend you to do since the view is sensational. Once you have almost returned to the starting point, you can also take to your right to climb up to the Mirador de Samara which also offers very beautiful panoramas (especially at sunset)

On top of montaña Guajara
on top of Guajara, a stunning view of the Teide
Mount Guajara, at 2718m, is in fact the highest mountain in Tenerife after the Teide and Pico Viejo. In our opinion, it is also the place where we have the most beautiful view of the Teide of the whole national park. The hike starts at the parking lot of the hotel and restaurant Paradores, just next to the bus stop. We take the path that starts just behind and joins the 7 Canadas trail. Once you have reached the track, continue opposite on the path that goes up towards Mount Guajara on the right (you are advised to go up this side because it is the steepest slope). The path climbs steadily but without much difficulty and we already have a very nice view of the Teide behind us.
At the pass, take the path on the left that goes up towards the summit. The path goes under a rocky bar and then turns left into a corridor (here it climbs a little steeper). After the corridor, the path is flatter again and it is easy to reach the top of Guajara Mountain. You will find a shelter there which was also the site of an old observatory with a magnificent view of the Teide.
For the descent nothing complicated… we took the option to follow the ridge and therefore take the most direct path but it is also possible to go back a little further and take a left on a slightly less steep path. After the descent we reach the 7 canadas trail to return to the parking lot and complete the loop.

Small hike in the Corona Forestal
I called these two small walks “Corona Forestal” (or forest crown) because they are simply located in the large area of protected pine forest that surrounds the Teide volcano. You can see on the map above that I actually indicated 2 small hikes along the road that goes up to Teide from La Laguna. I like this area very much because we are on a large ridge that gently climbs to the Teide in the middle of this magnificent pine forest. You will have some spectacular views of the volcano and the surrounding area.
In fact, to do these little hikes you have to park at the level of the red and green flags (and take the car between the 2 rides). The first one is a little lower and crosses the forest to access great clearances with a view to fall on the volcano. The 2nd is a short loop to a rock rather nice for the pictures… judge for yourself

The Teide cable car
If there is indeed a cable car that climbs almost to the top of the Teide (up to 3555m to be exact)! So I have to tell you that I’m not a big fan of this kind of facility, but with more than 3 million tourists a year visiting the park, it was almost inevitable. So if you want to climb almost to the top of the Teide without sweating, it is possible every day from 9:00 to 17:00 (19:00 in summer) for the modest sum of 27€ round trip (which you can buy on this site.
However, if you want to climb to the top of the Teide, as I told you earlier, you will need a permit that is reserved several months in advance. The view from the cable car’s arrival on the Caldera is not too bad though and you can also take a short walk to the Pico Viejo viewpoint or the Fortaleza viewpoint without a permit;)
Star watching from the Teide National Park
This is an activity I hadn’t necessarily thought of before our arrival, but it turns out that Teide National Park is one of the best places in the world to observe the stars (there is a very important scientific observatory that can be visited). Indeed, at more than 2000m and far from any light pollution, the Teide is the ideal place to observe and photograph the starry sky.
the milky way from the teide nationa park
The most important thing you need to think about if you want to admire the stars and the Milky Way is to climb up to the Teide if possible on a new moon night. Indeed, it is the nights when there is no moon where you can best observe the sky and photograph it. In addition, to observe the Milky Way, the best time to do so is in spring because the galactic centre (the brightest part of the Milky Way) is in the open sky at night.
And if you want to take beautiful pictures at night, you need of course a camera with a fairly large sensor (Full Frame or APS-C), a wide angle lens with sufficient aperture (f2.8 and below) and a tripod for long exposures. As far as I’m concerned, I have a Sony A7ii body with a Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D lens and a very light Sirui T-025X Carbon tripod. For more details on choosing a camera, you can also take a look at this guide I wrote.
Guided night tours
For our part, we always came to Teide “alone” at night (sometimes with colivers, but always without a guide). As far as we are concerned, the main attraction was to see the Milky Way and to photograph it. However, if you are interested in astronomy it is also possible to do night hikes with a guide who will explain more about the stars. These 3 hour hikes are organised once a week and cost 16€ per person.

We hope that this article on the Teide National Park will be useful to you and help you prepare your outings to the highest peak in Spain. But believe us, Tenerife has much more to offer than the Teide volcano and the southern beaches. This island has an exceptional diversity and we still have some nice surprises in store for our next articles.
In the meantime we wish you a great start to the new year 2019 and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Hiking Teide by night – all infos with Map and details
In this article I told you about all the hiking possibilities offered by the Teide National Park, but I promised to come back to one of them in more detail: the ascent of the Teide volcano (by day or by night).
The Teide, with its 3718m is actually the highest mountain in Spain and one of our plans when coming to Tenerife for the winter was to climb to the summit to admire the sunrise over the Canaries. And to tell you the truth, we enjoyed the view so much from up there that we went up there twice (once with our friend Faustine and once with a few people from Nine Coliving).
If you want more ideas about things to do in Tenerife, check out this post
the view on top of Teide
On the other hand, as I explained here, the volcano is protected by a UNESCO World Heritage National Park (which is a good thing given the number of tourists who visit it per year) which will add some constraints to climb the Teide volcano as you will see.
Well, let’s get down to business. Here is all you need to know to climb the Teide volcano.
Routes to get to Teide (with map)
There are actually 2 main options to climb to the top of the Teide volcano:
You can take the cable car (the black spots on the map) and simply make the last climb to the top (if you have obtained a permit to pass… we will discuss it again just below). Be aware that the last bit of ascent is less than 1km long but still for 200m of climb!
You can park in the Montaña Blanca car park (at an altitude of about 2300m) and climb to the top via the Altavista refuge (the blue route on the map below). This option is of course much more challenging because the path to the top is about 8kms(5 miles) for a 1350m (4400 feets) climb! Allow 3 to 5 hours of walking depending on your physical condition.
There is also another path that climbs to Teide via Pico Vieijo (after Pico Vieijo, the path continues up to the cable car and then to the top) but this path is even longer and is generally not chosen for the climb to Teide. On the other hand, you could go down this side if you don’t want to follow the same path as the ascent through Montaña Blanca.
The permit to access the top of the Teide (and its limits)
Volcano Teide
For the preservation of the site, access to the summit of the Teide is limited to 150 people per day and a permit must be requested to access it. The permit is 100% free of charge. (The use of the permit only concerns the last end to reach the top of the Teide since the arrival of the cable car. You can easily climb up to the arrival of the cable car without a permit)
The problem is that there is so much demand that you have to book it several months in advance! It’s obviously a little annoying because it forces you to plan a long time in advance and it becomes impossible to organize your hike according to the weather (it’s a bit silly if you’ve booked everything and on the day you want to leave the weather is bad )
Get the free permit here
But the trick to know is that in fact this permit is not necessary if you climb to the top of the volcano before 9am (arrival time of the 1st cable car cabin)! This leaves us with the following options to climb to the top of the Teide:
During the day, having obtained a permit for the last part of the climb to the top of the volcano.
Without permit option 1: In 2 days by sleeping at the Altavista refuge (you will have to book the night) then by climbing to the top for sunrise (so passing before 9am)
Without permit option 2: In 1 day by doing all the night ascent to reach the top for sunrise.
As for us, we climbed to the top of the Teide twice, hiking at night from the Montaña Blanca car park. But we will still describe for you all the different options below.
Teide volcano from the top of Guajara Mountain
Hiking Teide by night in 1 day
It is the most flexible option but it is also the most difficult of the 3 (since we go up and down in 1 day). By going up at night, you will not need the permit or to book a night at the Altavista refuge (the refuge is often full several weeks in advance). This is clearly the best option if you want to avoid booking your hike weeks in advance and adapt to the weather.
As I told you, we always chose to go up at night because there was never any room at the Altavista refuge and we also wanted to be sure to go up in good weather. But I can reassure you right away, going up to the Teide by night is not as difficult as it seems. Basically you just need to have a headlamp in addition to the usual equipment and follow the path which is super well marked.
The departure time will depend on your physical condition. For example, when I went up for the first time with 2 friends who were in better shape than me, we left at 4am from the Montaña Blanca car park and arrived at the top around 7am. On the other hand, the 2nd time we went up with friends from our coliving who were a little less used to this kind of hiking and we left at 2:30 in the morning from the parking lot.
The milky way in the Teide national park
The first part of the ascent is done on a wide track and climbs slowly (perfect to warm up). If the night is clear, there is hardly any need for the headlamp to light up. Moreover, when you turn off the lights, you can admire the Milky Way and the magnificent starry sky… what an experience to hike under the stars on the Teide volcano.
After maybe 4-5 km, we reach the beginning of the trail and that’s when the serious things start. Even if the path is technically speaking easy, the slope becomes much steeper which should warm you up well 😉 . After 2 km of good climbing, we finally reach the Altavista refuge for a well-deserved warm break.
In the refuge, a screen shows the time of sunrise, the temperature at the top of the volcano and the wind. If you are fast, it takes about 1 hour to get to the top, if not 2 hours. After the refuge, it continues to climb steep enough to a flatter part to reach the arrival of the cable car. At this point, the first lights of the day should be well present and the summit is in sight.
Then we start the last climb to the top of the Teide (the path that requires a permit after 9am). This part is short (7-800m) but it is the steepest part of the whole hike. With altitude, the legs are heavy and the breath is a little short. However, we reach the summit quite quickly and the reward for our efforts is right in front of us: the sun rising above the sea of clouds.
sun rising – View from Mount Teide
We then witness a superb spectacle that I had the chance to observe on Rinjani in Indonesia: the volcano is so big that its shadow projects far ahead of us at sunrise. That’s really impressive!
Teide’s shadow projection
The smell of sulphur at the top is very present and many fumaroles remind us that we are on an active volcano. In fact, if you are too cold, you can always get closer to one of them to warm up 😉 (if you can stand the smell of rotten eggs)
we can clearly see that the volcano is still active
After enjoying the beautiful sunrise lights, it’s time to go down again and you have 3 options:
Go down to the cable car and take the cabin down (option I recommend if you are already very tired and have €13.5 for the ticket:) ). No need to book tickets in advance… this is the option we chose the 2nd time with our Coliving friends because many people were very tired.
the view while coming down
Go down the same path as on the ascent. If you still have the energy, I highly recommend this option because when you go down by day, you will have a completely different perspective than when you go up and the landscapes are really breathtaking.
Go down through the Pico Viejo. This is perhaps the most spectacular option with a view of the huge crater of Pico Viejo. But know that if you go down this way again, you will have to find a means of transport once on the road to get back to the Montaña Blanca car park (by lifting your thumb it shouldn’t be a problem;)). For more information you can take a look at our hike on the Pico Viejo.
To sum up, if you are not at the end of your strength, I really recommend that you walk down to take the time to enjoy the lunar landscapes of the Teide volcano.
Spend the night at the Altavista refuge and climb in 2 days
This option is quite interesting because by cutting the climb in half and sleeping at the Altavista refuge, you make your task easier and you also take more time. You can enjoy the late afternoon and the view from the refuge.
refuge Altavista
Then you just have to get up around 5am to do the last part until the top of the volcano to admire the sunrise. I do not give you the details of the path because it is the same as for the night ascent.
So on paper this seems to be the best option… but the problem is that the refuge is usually full weeks in advance. And so we end up with the same problem as for the permit, we have to plan the day of the ascent weeks ahead, which is not great for flexibility and weather. After the refuge looks pretty good and a night costs only 20 euros… so if you can book a place it’s a great option.

Climbing with the Teide cable car
So if you think you won’t be able to walk up from the car park, you obviously have the option of the cable car which will take you up to 3555m. Then you will need the permit I mentioned at the beginning of the article to take the last part that will take you to the top about 200m higher. Please note that the Teide cable car is open every day from 9am to 5pm (7pm in summer) and that the return ticket costs 27€.

Remarks and practical information
Weather on Teide
Statistically speaking, Teide is probably the place on the island where the weather is most often good! It is very common for clouds to stop at an altitude of 2000m, which means that in the national park we are above it. In short, never forget to take sunscreen and a cap/hat if you go up during the day because the sun is strong!
above the clouds
Another important point to mention is the temperatures! The summit of Teide and its 3718m is high, even very high! In Tenerife it is over 20°C at the seaside and this almost all year round, so it would be easy to “forget” that gaining 3700m of altitude REALLY changes the situation in terms of climate. (I see you smiling, but I swear to you that we met some people who were going up in cable cars in shorties/tags with a small sweater and who once up were absolutely freezing). 😉
During the day, the temperatures at the top vary according to the sunshine and the wind (which can blow hard). In winter it is generally between -1° and 5° during the day and in summer the range would be between 8° and 12° for days of bright sunshine and no wind.
The above temperatures are those observed during the day, so if you go up at night know that you can do up to -8° in winter and close to zero in summer!
it’s beautiful on top… but it’s freezing!
the gear to take with you
You will have understood it, to climb the Teide you must be well equipped because it can be very cold, especially if there is wind. So here is the list of things I suggest you take with you:
a headlamp if you go up at night
a cap to protect you from the sun that hits very hard
sunscreen
a hat and gloves
a windproof jacket and a down jacket
at least trail type shoes
at least 2 litres of water per person
snacks because you will need energy
Difficulties: mountain sickness and altitude difference
Finally, I would just like to advise you not to minimize the difficulty of this hike (especially if you are climbing all at once from the car park). Certainly there is absolutely no technical difficulty because the path is very well marked out but a climb of 1350m is not insignificant for everyone. It’s still a hell of a climb and you have to be ready to sweat.
The 2nd very important point not to be neglected is mountain sickness. To tell you the truth, during our 2 climbs I felt the effects of the altitude with a slight headache. It must be said that we lived in La Orotava at 400m above sea level and that in a few hours we found ourselves at an altitude of more than 3500m! The body generally does not appreciate such altitude changes too much in such a short time. Moreover, during our 2nd ascent with our friends from coliving, 4 out of 9 people gave up before the summit because of mountain sickness. To put all the chances on your side, drink plenty of water! But don’t insist if you have a headache and want to throw up… it’s not worth it and it’s better to go back down.

Camper Van
We didn’t do it in Tenerife, but since we bought our van the Dahu, we really want to come back to Tenerife and discover the area by van. The island lends itself really well if you want our opinion. 🙂 If you want to rent one directly on the island (probably the easiest solution), then you can go to the website Yescapa. They offer camper vans rented directly by van owners (with all required insurances). You could also check on the Campstar website which compares the best vans and RVs rental companies See the camper vans on Tenerife See the campers on Campstar
Other hikes in Teide National Park
There is not only the ascent of the Teide which is an interesting hike in the national park (far from it). Here are some other hiking ideas that may be of interest to you:
Climb Pico Viejo
Guajara Mountain
Roque de Garcia
The quite unknown place of Samara

Teide hiking trails | Trails in the Teide National Park
Hiking mount Teide
Hiking some of the more than 30 trails on Teide is an absolute must for anyone who loves nature. The great variety and levels of difficulty make it easy for visitors to choose their ideal route. The trails with the most spectacular views are on the summit of Mount Teide and they can be reached on foot or by taking a comfortable ride in the cable car.
El Teide is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Its 3,718-metre (12,198 ft) high summit is the highest point in Spain, the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic, and it is the third highest volcano in the world measured from its base on the ocean floor (7,500 metres).
The volcano and its surroundings comprise the Teide National Park. The park has an area of 18,900 hectares (73 sq mi) and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29, 2007. Is also one of the most visited National Parks in the world, with a total of 2.8 million visitors, according to the Instituto Canario de Estadística.
Spring is the best time to visit Teide. Flowering broom and tajinaste blanket the vast landscape in an explosion of red and white. The weather is milder, just right for enjoying routes and trails. It is the perfect time for botany enthusiasts.
Winter snows cover the lava flows and badlands in a mantle of white. Large pools reflect a landscape of contrasts of extraordinary beauty. Many visitors are fortunate to catch a glimpse of the first snowfall.
Enjoying the sunrise from the Peak of Teide after having spent the night in the Altavista Mountain Refuge is one of those unique experiences everybody should have at least once in their lifetime.

Teide is a tough mountain to climb involving up to 5 hours of high-altitude ascent. It is not suitable for people with heart or lung conditions or for pregnant women or young children.
How to reach the Teide Cable Car
The Teide Cable Car is located in the heart of Teide National Park, in Tenerife (Canary Islands). This cable car takes you on one of the most spectacular trips in Spain: straight up Mount Teide, the largest volcano in the country. As visitors travel up and down the mountain they will fly over an amazing geological treasure, where volcanos, craters and rivers of lava combine to create an impressive canvas of shapes and colours that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The Teide Cable Car is an aerial tramway with two passenger cabins attached to fixed track cables, each pulled by separate propulsion cables, so that while one cabin goes up, the other comes down. The trip covers a total of 2,471 m (a horizontal distance of 2,152 m), passing four towers, the first three from the bottom are 50 m tall and the final one is 25 m tall. The cable car travels at a speed of 8 m/s (29 Km/h), slowing down to 7 m/s when passing the towers.
The lower station is located on the TF-21 highway, at an altitude of 2,356 m. There are two modern passenger cabins each with a carrying capacity of 38 people and one leaves from this station every 8 minutes. The lower station has free parking, a rest area, café, store and buffet restaurant with magnificent views of Teide National Park.
The upper station has a small hall which leads the visitors to the outside. At an altitude of 3,555 m, the station is the starting point for the different activities offered by our ‘Volcano Life Experience’ programme, the perfect complement for an unforgettable day.
Teide cable car is very easy to get to by road. Depending on your starting point on the island, there are several ways to arrive quickly and easily.
How to reach the Teide Cable Car

Altavista del Teide High Mountain Refuge
The Altavista Refuge was originally used by scientists to observe stars. Today it is a unique spot in the world at an altitude of 3,265 m, equipped for hikers and visitors who wish to climb to the crater of the great volcano of Teide National Park. It is located halfway up the traditional trail leading to the summit of the Teide volcano. In fact, it is the lodging located at the highest altitude in Spain, the perfect spot to admire the exceptional quality of the night sky. Spending the night at the refuge allows you to experience the first rays of sun on the summit of Teide as they inundate the landscape with colours, while the volcano casts its protective shadow over the ocean.
Remember: Prevention, Information and Knowledge are the key to avoiding unpleasant situations.
Make sure you always have somebody else to walk with, stick to the marked footpaths and respect the way of life, privacy and property of the local inhabitants.
If you keep your noise levels down, you will discover just how much life there is all around you.
Take any rubbish with you, even organic waste. This will help preserve the beauty of the scenery and prevent the proliferation of rodents in the area. Take special care with cigarette butts.
Picking up plants, animals or other items from the environment may entail the loss of irreplaceable resources.
The people who take care of these Protected Nature Areas would be very grateful if you let them know about any incidents you may have noticed on your walk.
Remember that the Island’s environment is as unique as it is unpredictable. It must be enjoyed responsibly and sensibly. Take special care in natural areas and don’t forget that accidents can happen at any time.
Pay attention to signs.
Check the weather forecast? to make sure the conditions are suitable.
Wear suitable clothing and footwear for hiking and always pack your mobile phone, sunscreen, a hat, a coat, a waterproof, enough food and plenty of water in your backpack.
Let your family and/or friends know which route you will be taking and bear in mind how many daylight hours you will need to complete it.

is the devil’s prison, but why is this mountain so nicknamed?
A symbol of faith, a symbol of time, a symbol of the city… Who invented symbols and why do people need them?
On the one hand, the answer to this question can take several pages of lengthy philosophical calculations. On the other hand, in my opinion, you should not strain so much. What does the symbol do when it catches our eye? That’s right – it causes us certain associations with what is hidden under it. At the same time, a multi-stage chain of images, arranged in a logical order, is pulled out of our memory. And for that train to go, you need a steam locomotive, which is the symbol that covers it. Let me give you a good example – the icon of the Eiffel Tower. When I see him in my head, it clicks: Paris – France – romance – love – clothes and so on. Or a different alignment: Paris – dirt – stink – Arabs – not a foot here again! Fortunately, the Teide volcano as a symbol of the island of Tenerife evokes only good associations in me.
Teide volcano against the backdrop of lava
And, probably, not only for me, since Teide is placed on the central place of honor in the coat of arms of the island. The coat of arms appeared in 1510 after the conquest of the Canary Islands by the Spanish conquistadors. By the way, over the volcano, not feeling its heat, the patron saint of the island, Archangel Michael, calmly soars. Perhaps you can’t deny the conquerors a sense of humor. Peculiar, really… Yeah, inquisitorial!
The legend of Teide
Of course, the original inhabitants of the islands, the Guanches, also could not ignore the majestic Teide. Or rather, Echeide, which in translation means – devilish. The fact is that having settled here around the 10th century BC, the natives considered the mountain to support the sky. That is, the object is quite divine. And they came up with a legend for themselves, according to which the devil Guayota deceived Magek, the god of light and the sun, inside the mountain. Naturally, the surrounding world immediately plunged into darkness. Then the Guanches brought gifts to the supreme god Archaman, praying for help. Good Archaman entered into a battle with the devil and rescued Magek from the trap. After that, he sent Guajot himself into it and reliably caulked there. Serve you right – do not dig a hole for your neighbor! Since then, delighted natives buried simple gifts in the slopes of the Teide. Thus, they called on the “divine” not to release the devil into the wild. And if there were eruptions, the Guanches burned fires, trying to scare Guyot and drive him back. By the way, they portrayed the devil in the form of a black dog.
It’s worth noting that the Guanches weren’t original in using the volcano as a prison for the bad guy. Similar stories exist elsewhere. For example, in Hawaiian myths, a bad goddess named Pel was imprisoned in a similar way. They considered her “watching” the Kilauea volcano.
Are you sleeping, my love?
Of course, the conquerors did not believe in that legend, but they were afraid of the volcano. And not for nothing, because the mostly sleeping mountain still puffed from time to time. She especially could not sleep at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1704-1705 she snored a couple of times, however, without any harm to others. But the next year she took it, and washed away the town with three villages with lava. At the end of the same century, Teide again made itself felt. And finally at 19In 09, her last activity to date was recorded with her favorite Soviet verdict “There are no victims and no destruction.”
Port of Garachico, washed away in 1706 by lava. Now there is a public bath.
Meanwhile, should the relative peace of Tenerife’s symbol be viewed with complete optimism? Here the opinions of scholars are divided. Most classify the volcano as not dangerous to humans and nature, given the poor history of its eruptions. But there is also an opposite point of view. Moreover, according to the date of the study, on the basis of which it was made, more recent. The bottom line is that the geological structure of this volcano turned out to be akin to Etna and Vesuvius. And how they behaved is well known. So relax, my friends, early. Especially for those who plan to fly to Tenerife. After all, Teide also has a well-known duplicity of its name. As a “mountain” she is feminine, but as a volcano she is masculine!
Touches to the portrait of Teide
The two-faced creature has the world’s largest shadow projected onto the surface of the sea during sunset. It is curious that the shadow is displayed in the form of an ideal triangle, although the silhouette of the volcano itself does not show this very ideality. It should be noted here that, by its design, it seems to have two floors. According to geological history, another volcano formed first – Las Cañadas. Then the poor fellow could not bear the weight of his own “roof” and let it fall through. The result was something similar to a giant crater, or scientifically – a caldera (cauldron in translation). This thing has a diameter of as much as 16 km! And in that same caldera, much later, the peak of a new volcano ascended to the sky. But then the peak did not suspect that it was also destined to become the highest point in Spain.
Volcano within a volcano. On the left, you can see the preserved wall of the Las Cañadas caldera, several hundred meters high (!). (NASA satellite image).
Teide is the third highest island peak in the world (3718 meters). However, it did not cause much attention from climbers. Occasionally, only a few amateurs made climbs – mostly from among those who happened to be nearby. As, for example, members of various marine expeditions. They spent several days and a lot of energy on a rather tedious ascent, not burdened by precipices and other sources of adrenaline. However, with the development of tourism in the Canary Islands, the interest of visitors to the top of the mountain has grown. Then the authorities of the island built at first the usual road “uphill”, and later – the funicular. Thus, now you can comfortably drive a car from the mark of 2,356 meters. And then it is no less pleasant to climb the “cable car” to the level of 3,555 meters, admiring the surrounding beauties.
Attention! If you don’t want to stand in line for the funicular and, what’s worse, generally get a bummer, then you are here: https://www.volcanoteide.com/en

Photo for memory
On the right photo you can see a stand with a walking route. The most inveterate climbers can use it to overcome on foot the remaining 163 meters to the crater. To do this, enthusiasts must also obtain permission in advance on the website of the island’s environmental ministry. The permission is free. However, I would not advise you to relax in advance. On the desired day and time, there were no places for us. Therefore, consider other people’s mistakes and go here. There you need to press the “RESERVAS” button and then on the page that opens, the icon at the bottom right (with arrows). Do not get lost further.
Unlike us, the guys on the right picture didn’t burst. However, we were not particularly worried, since one and a half hundred meters horizontally is not the same thing as vertical. And it’s not about strength, it’s about time. We set aside a few hours to travel here. It takes almost a full day for a complete climbing program. How about a beach? In addition, honestly, the surroundings impress with their beauty no less than Teide itself. No wonder they are so loved by filmmakers – both Western and … even ours (???).
Cinema, cinema, cinema!
Do you know how tour guides are similar to TV presenters? Both those and others equally selflessly and convincingly hang noodles on our ears. Here, for example, guides in Tenerife claim that Star Wars was filmed here, with them. Figushki, not filmed! On the other hand, Teide and its environs served as a natural platform for less high-profile, but also quite significant films. To my shame, before coming here, I had no idea that my favorite childhood movie was one of them. This is the first version of One Million Years B.C.66th year of release.
I took my grandfather to the cinema at least three times. I suspect deep down he didn’t really mind. Tell me, where else in those days could a child see living dinosaurs?! Well, almost alive… It is now, in the era of computer graphics, THAT reptiles seem clumsily made. And a modern boy, of course, will spit all over, make him watch an old tape … However, I not only watched, but then sculpted ancient monsters and people from plasticine. And on a plywood board covered with the same plasticine, coupled with pebbles and chips, bloody battles unfolded. Who would have thought that those battles took place around the distant Teide volcano!
Therefore, immediately upon returning from the island, I was not too lazy to review the picture, holding the pictures we had taken at hand. And, behold, I found “material evidence.” If I had known in advance, I would have tried to correct the angle. But even so, in my opinion, it turned out well.
Still from the film with John Richardson
Almost the same without Richardson
I won’t list all the films shot in Tenerife – there are more than two dozen of them. In addition, Teide landscapes are far from being featured everywhere. However, the film “Clash of the Titans” in 2010 from director Louis Leterrier can not get around. Although, unlike the “million”, there is not so much living nature in it. However, I did find something similar.
Shot from the movie “Clash of the Titans”
Shot by me from a slightly different point
Speaking of birds.
Above, I noted the indifference of our filmmakers to the island. Information about this was published in the Russian-language online newspaper Tenerife News. The publication claims that in 2008 Alena Babenko starred here in the film “On the Sea!”. I became curious, and I flipped through this picture from and to (very mediocre, judging by the reviews). At the same time, we could not see any signs of Tenerife, and, by the way, we drove the entire island in a circle in two weeks. And the turtle crawling out of the sea onto the yellow sand completely struck the imagination. Then I was not too lazy to carefully read the credits that follow the film. From them it directly followed that this movie was filmed in Venezuela! This was confirmed by another highly respected source – IMDb. Therefore, I looked into the water, leaving three question marks above in brackets as a doubt about “even ours.” So, to remind you, how journalists are akin to guides?
Not only Teide is good.
In fairness, it should be noted that the surroundings of the volcano are asking for fantasy screens even more than he himself. At the same time, the background changes dramatically – depending on the distance to the mountain. Closer to it, we meet pictures of the apocalypse. A little further we see sketches of a strange and wild world. Finally, quite in the distance – a bizarre forest on stones, under which trolls may well settle.
Traces of the Apocalypse
Dinosaurs, ay!
Trees grow on stones
It is these outlandish beauties that make the volcano itself even more majestic. It is no coincidence that the gentlemen from UNESCO included it in the World Heritage List in 2006. Therefore, those who are lucky enough to get to Tenerife do not have the right to ignore Teide. This is equivalent to visiting Moscow, but not seeing Red Square.
Useful information
The best way to get to the volcano is by car, so I give you the parking coordinates: 28°15’10.1″N 16°37’32.3″W. It is highly recommended not to take organized tours at or near the hotel. As simple calculations show, such a trip will cost you twice as much as an independent one. Believe me, the guides will not tell you anything more than what you read here and supplement with a couple of other resources on the Web. Well, unless they blow their ears with the technical details of the life of a volcano. Do you need it? If there is no motivation to rent a car, you can use public transport. I don’t know how relevant the Russian-language resource is, but I always prefer official sources. In this case, this one is . I am sure that the lack of knowledge of the original language is fully compensated today by the regular translators of your browser.
And don’t forget to take one of my books with you on your trip – you can read it to your bedtime. I don’t mind if you take everything.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano located in the middle of a large Indonesian valley called “Sea of Sand”. This valley is a huge caldera created by the earth destroyed after a major eruption. Mount Bromo having 2329meters in height – not the highest peak, but the most famous volcano in Indonesia. Its name comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. This trail stops at a viewpoint on Mount Penanjakan, descends to the Sea of Sand valley, and then climbs a flight of stairs to reach the crater of Mount Bromo. From here, breathtaking views open up and the noise of gas and ash is heard.

Erta Ale, Ethiopia

Erta Ale Volcano is one of the few places in the world where you can easily walk to the edge of a boiling lava lake, one of nature’s most terrifying sights. It can be reached from the Bahari camp in the Danakil Desert (Afar Depression, Ethiopia) after a short climb lasting about three hours (10 km). In order to avoid the most intense period of scorching heat (given that this is one of the hottest places on the planet) and enjoy the night view, it is best to start the expedition in the late evening. Accompanying a guide is mandatory, and in addition, visitors are strongly advised to wear a mask in case the wind changes and unexpectedly surrounds you with poisonous clouds.

Kawah Ijen is part of a complex of active stratovolcanoes located on a 16 km caldera in East Java, Indonesia. Its crater is filled with hot, flammable sulfur dioxide gases, which, when released into the Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere, create a mesmerizing bright blue glow. It takes two hours to reach the crater, and then another 45 minutes to reach its rim, where there is an extraordinary turquoise lake, given its color due to the extreme acidity and high concentration of dissolved metals.

Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island
“Piton de la Fournaise” is located in the southeastern part of Reunion Island and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The first eruption occurred about 50,000 years ago, and the records show that since the first written mention of the eruption in 1640, this basalt shield volcano has erupted almost 180 times. The last eruption occurred in 2019year. The GR R2 route is a multi-day hiking expedition that crosses Reunion Island from north to south (from Saint-Denis to Saint-Philippe) and leads to the most picturesque places on the island, such as “Cirque de Mafate”, “Piton des Neiges” and Piton de la Fournaise.

Mount Fuji (also known as Fuji-san), at 3,776 meters, is the highest point in Japan. It is an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707. Along with Mounts Tateyama and Haku, it is one of Japan’s three sacred mountains and has attracted pilgrims for centuries. For a long history that inspires artists and poets, in 2013 UNESCO included it in the list of World Heritage Sites as a cultural monument. The most popular climbing route to the top of the mountain is the Yoshida Circular Trail, which starts from the 5th station of the Fuji-Subaru Line and leads to the summit from the north side.

Yellowstone, USA

Seventeen million years ago, in the United States, near the modern border of the three states: Nevada, Oregon and Idaho, an intense period of volcanic activity began. Just over 2 million years ago, the area now known as Yellowstone experienced the first of three eruptions, revealing one of the largest volcanoes in the world. The Yellowstone caldera is in near constant motion, and while experts don’t predict another eruption anytime soon, this underground “hotspot” continues to shape the park we see today. The park is known for its geothermal vents, particularly the Old Faithful geyser, and its vast forests and grasslands also make Yellowstone National Park the largest and most famous site in the United States, with many animal species that roam freely throughout the area: bears, grizzlies, wolves, bison, moose, which are often seen by visitors to the park.

This imposing temperate stratovolcano, nestled in a rainforest with powerful waterfalls and surrounded by meadows of wild flowers, is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Due to the large amount of glacial ice, this 4392-meter volcano can produce massive mudflows that threaten the entire Puyallup River valley. Mount Rainier was originally known as “Takoma” (“mother of the waters” in Lushhots, the native language of the Puyallup natives of the area). The Skyline Trail is one of the most popular trails through southern Paradise Valley, offering not only views of Mount Rainier and the Nisqually Glacier, but also of the Thattosh Peaks, Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood.

Teide (Tenerife) volcano climb review with photo and video – Good where we are 🙂
Finally, our review of the ascent to Mount Teide with photos and videos. There are many interesting places in Tenerife :). This is our fourth day.
The Teide volcano is located almost in the center of the southern part of Tenerife. The highest mountain of this Canary Island.
Ascent to Mount Teide
So, we are going to Mount Teide . We have already looked at the national park around it, so you can go straight to the funicular without stopping. Fortunately, there was no strong wind (and it is better to watch the weather in Tenerife here).
Since we again did not bother to study the nuances of sights in advance, only the day before we found out from the Internet that getting to the very top of the volcano (from the funicular another 600m on foot along a special path) is possible only by appointment, no more than 150 people are allowed there a day from – for the threat of erosion. Many sign up there through the Teide volcano site for a month (and in high season for two). The rest are content with contemplation from the upper funicular station.
True, there are two more ways to get to the top. The first is to climb the volcano on foot along a special hiking trail. People with normal physical training can keep within 8-9 hours round trip. As they say in the reviews, the way up is complicated by rarefied air, you often have to stop for a break, and you can’t go off the path to cut off (those who tried were sorry anyway, it’s not easy to find the path back).
Here is a route number 7: the difficulty is high, the travel time is 4 hours 15 minutes.
The second way to get to the top of Teide is to… spend the night on the volcano and watch the sunrise there. In the middle of the 19th century, on a slope not far from the vent (at an altitude of 3260 m!) A small shelter for wanderers “Alta Vista” was built. Not so long ago, in 2007, they renovated it, equipped it with heating, a kitchen and even the Internet, and it turned out to be an unusual hotel. True, you need to bring all food and water with you, having risen on the last funicular flight at 16:00 and walking a few hundred meters more. And then take the trash back with you. It is worth spending the night, by the way, inexpensively – 24 euros and places are not taken up so actively. For example, in April it was possible to book a place a day or two in advance. Judging by the reviews, you can spend the night quite tolerably, except for the fact that there are several bunk beds in one room. And many friendly and optimistic neighbors, with whom it is very pleasant to meet and chat in reality, in a dream begin to display snoring rolls of different tonalities. So for those who decide to spend the night, be sure to take earplugs with you. And you won’t have to sleep for a long time: you get up at the shelter at 4 in the morning, because there is still almost an hour’s journey to the top. The temperature outside the shelter at this time is about zero, so you need to take warm clothes with you, a hat and gloves (even if you went downstairs in shorts), a flashlight. But the sunrise over the ocean is a spectacle that compensates for all the inconveniences, and it is always visible, because all the clouds have remained below, under your feet. After that, you can go down with peace of mind on the first funicular flight at 9hours.
Cool options for fans of extreme sports. Well, we used the standard method, deciding that the view from the top platform of the funicular would be enough for us. I didn’t want to freeze anymore, and I didn’t want to lose the whole day either … We bought two tickets for 45 euros the day before on the website of the Teide volcano, for a morning flight from 9 to 10 in the morning, it’s cheaper, and there are fewer people at this time, and standing in line at the box office no need.
On the way we stopped at a gas station. Tenerife has surprisingly cheap gas compared to mainland Spain and Greece. Refueled for 40 euros.
We arrived at the beginning of ten, there were no problems with parking yet.
We presented electronic tickets to the cashier in iPad, we were given paper tickets in return.
We passed through the waiting room with the chairs set out in a snake (as it turned out, for a reason, on the way back we saw a line at the entrance overlooking the street).
Before entering you are always stopped and photographed against the background of the window. That is, it may not be necessary, but most tourists, inspired by the upcoming ascent, do not refuse.
There was practically no queue to the trailer, we got into the second one, the climb lasts about 8 minutes.
View from the funicular to the Teide National Park:
It turned out that in addition to the entrance to the summit (No. 10), which is closed to imprudent citizens, there are two more side routes.
Now the photos from the first one (No. 11):
There is snow here and there, the jackets really did not interfere with us. And you can really feel the rarefied mountain air, upon returning from the second route I even had to take a break, since there is a place to sit down, there are a lot of stones warmed by the sun along the path.
Fanciful rocks, you can arrange a direct competition, like Tanya had, who will see what in these forms 🙂
The path ends with such an observation deck.
Overlooking the north coast of Tenerife. With a strong magnification, you can see the waves in Puerto de la Cruz.
The American we asked to take a picture of us (in English, of course) figured us out very quickly and before the third shot was already commanding us in our own way “One, two, three… four!”. Not only recently visited Sochi)))
One boy from an English-speaking family decided to climb to the top, and quite succeeded in this matter.
But still, the parents of the child returned back, remembering that it is forbidden to go off the trail. There was even a figure of 5,000 euros – a fine. I don’t know how accurate it is, but it sounds sobering. Moreover, I also shifted a little from the path, seeing the smoke of hydrogen sulfide, it’s curious.
Fortunately, no one fined us at the exit, they only offered to buy our own photo for 5 euros.
The second route (No. 12) leads in the other direction, and the landscapes are different there (although, it would seem, just a different slope of one volcano).
In the distance you can see the neighboring islands of La Gomera and La Palma:
More videos:
In general, the routes are interesting, and even pensioners walk along them without problems.
Video – descent on the funicular. Below you can see that the queue for the rise has grown a lot.
And just at the exit, we found that before the ascent it was possible to take an audio guide for 5 euros:
And for fans of non-trivial trips, the best option is to hire a local guide who will show you as many interesting places and tell you as many interesting facts and tales as you will not find anywhere else on the Internet: even figurines in the national dress of different islands, even a three-dimensional map of Tenerife, even cookbooks with local recipes. Well, lizards are pebbles in different forms.
You can dine both in fast food sandwiches and in the canteen, quite a decent buffet:
By the way, these little balls, which we took for buns, turned out to be local baked potatoes:
We spent lunch 31 Euro. By the way, I liked one of the salads: cabbage, carrots, corn, apples and green grapes with mayonnaise.
