Andalucia, Spain – Live Weather Update

Weather Overview

Andalucía is located in the south of Spain on the Costa del Sol, or the ‘sunshine coast’. The large region is home to well-known destinations such as Seville, Granada and Malaga. As its name suggests, the coast is particularly sunny for most of the year. On average Andalucía and the surrounding regions receive a total of three thousand hours of sunlight each year.

The region has a typically Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, however the Cabo de Gata region, located in Andalucía on the south-eastern Mediterranean coastline, is dry all year around and is the only region of Europe with a desert climate.

Despite this, rainfall in Andalucía does increase quickly from summer to winter. There have been a few episodes of flash floods in recent times, and the area has been put on storm alert in the past.

Andalucía is what most people think of when they think of typical Spain; the weather is hot and sunny and it is one of the few regions that still participate in typical Spanish traditions such as bull-fighting and flamenco. This makes it an extremely popular holiday destination, especially for those seeking reliably hot sunshine and a tan during the summer season. Summer is the most popular time to visit Andalucía to relax on the beaches near the coast and soak up the sun.

While the weather in spring and autumn is cooler and there’s less sunshine than the summer, the region receives visitors all year round. Outside of peak season, the quieter spring and autumn months are good times of the year to visit the various tourist attractions of Andalucía including the numerous beautiful buildings.

Andalucia, Spain

Summer

Summer is peak tourism season in Andalucía and the best time of year to visit if you’re looking for great weather. In summer, the sun is practically a guarantee, with 12 glorious hours in July and 11 hours in June and August.

If you’re on the hunt for hot and dry beach weather, the best time to go to Andalucía would be July or August, as rainfall in these months averages at only 1-5mm, which is virtually non-existent. In fact, the whole of summer is generally very dry with just 9mm of rain in June.

Summer is also the hottest time of the year in the region. Average temperatures reach 28°C in mid-summer but often peak to sweltering highs of 36°C which can feel very hot indeed. Temperatures can get even hotter than this on some occasions; the official record in Andalucía for the hottest temperature is 46.5°C, peaking in the cities of Sevilla, Morón and Córdoba. The coast is generally cooler thanks to sea breezes.

As a result of these high temperatures and abundance of sunshine, Andalucía and the Costa del Sol is one of Spain’s most popular regions for beach holidays. The beaches of Malaga and Marbella on the Mediterranean coast offers swimming and fine sands – perfect if the holiday you are looking for involves a lot of relaxing on the beach! However, if the weather gets too hot in the summer, holiday makers can cool down in one of the area’s many attractions and explore historical wonders such as the Alhambra in Granada.

Autumn

Arriving at the end of September, the autumn weather in Andalucía remains almost as good as the summer months, however, temperatures are starting to drop and sunshine levels are decreasing towards winter. It’s still a great time to visit Andalucía if you’re looking for good weather and less crowds of tourists though. Temperatures average around 20°C in October and fall to an average of 15°C in November, although highs can still reach a pleasant 26°C. There’s 6-7 hours of sunshine in autumn.

Autumn is a popular season to travel to Andalucía even though showers are more likely to come during this month. Rainfall increases steeply from 25mm in September to 66mm in October, so holiday makers should be prepared for the chance of wet weather.

Winter

One of the great things about Andalucía is that the forecast is almost always sunny, even in winter! There’s still around 5-6 hours of sunshine throughout the winter season.

Winter temperatures are much cooler than the summer months, but much warmer than other parts of Europe, which makes Andalucía a popular winter sun destination. Average temperatures are between 11°C and 12°C from December to February, while highs can reach between 15°C and 17°C. However, temperatures do vary throughout the region. The highest winter temperature would be found in Seville which can reach up to 26°C and the lowest temperature would be in Grenada which is around 7°C.

This season has the highest levels of rainfall which is due to the weather systems sweeping in from the west. In recent years, January received three times as much rainfall than the average in the last thirty years, and some parts of Cadiz received 200mm of rain. On average though, there’s around 76mm of rain in December falling to 59mm by February. This season is best for the tourists who don’t want to sunbathe and don’t mind the slight chance of rain.

It has been known to snow in January in Andalucía, but this is not very common and has only ever been a light coating. Plus with the breath-taking scenery that Andalucía has to offer seeing it in snow would not be a disappointment.

Bolonia Beach, Andalucia

Spring

Spring occurs between March and May in Andalucía and is the transition period between winter and summer. During spring, the weather is typically warm with a strong breeze in the air which cools temperatures slightly. Average temperatures range from 15°C in March to 20°C in May, however temperatures can reach a balmy 27°C at the end of May. This is perfect for sightseers and holiday makers as it is not too hot to spend all day wandering around the glorious features of Andalucía but it is still hot enough to get that healthy tan.

Sunshine levels are starting to increase in spring, with 6 hours in March rising to 10 hours in May. Visitors should be aware that there’s also a good chance of some spring time showers in Andalucía at this time of year. March is the wettest month of the year, with 90mm of rainfall, but things will start to dry up come May.

Andalucia, Spain – October Weather

Weather Lowdown

Temperatures start to cool off considerably in Andalucia during October, though it is still hot by British standards with an average daytime maximum temperature of 26°C (78°F), while the average minimum is 14°C (57°F) over much of the region. Coastal areas are generally warmer at night than inland. Sea temperatures in October are still warm, around 22°C (71°F).

Skies over Andalucia are mostly clear, with a 24% chance of precipitation. Rainfall becomes more common during October than during the summer months, particularly when low pressure systems track further south than usual. However, most Octobers have lengthy dry spells, and while the mean monthly rainfall averages around 60-70mm, this falls on an average of just five rainfall days.

Sunshine remains quite reliable, particularly near the Mediterranean coast, with an average of 7 hours per days with bright sunshine.

Humidity ranges from comfortable (35%) to very humid (97%), with the air drier around October 1 and becoming more wet as the month progresses. Wind speeds range from calm to gentle breeze, blowing in from the west.

Overall, average temperatures cool off quite rapidly in October. Around October 1, averages are at 18°C (64°F), with highs of 26°C (78°F) and lows of 11°C (51°F). By mid-month, averages are at 15°C (59°F), highs at 23°C (73°F) and lows at 9°C (48°F). By the end of October, averages are at 13C (55°F), highs at 20C (68°F) and lows at 7C (44°F).

Weather in Spain – accurate and detailed weather forecast in Spain for today, tomorrow and week.

Spain

Spain (Spanish and Galician España, cat. Espanya, Basque Espainia, ox. Espanha), officially the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish and Galician Reino de España, cat. Regne d’Espanya, Basque Espainiako Erresuma, ox Reialme d’Espanha) is a sovereign state in southwestern Europe, a member of the European Union. Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula. The territory is divided into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities. The capital is Madrid.

According to one version, the name of the country comes from the Phoenician expression “i-spanim” – “shore of hyraxes”. It occupies 80% of the territory of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the Canary and Balearic Islands, has a total area of 504,782 km² (together with small sovereign territories on the African coast, the cities of Ceuta and Melilla), being the fourth largest country in Europe after Russia, Ukraine and France. The average height of the surface of Spain is 650 meters above sea level.

What to see in Tenerife, the island of a thousand experiences ? Marca Canaria

Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary archipelago, but it is also the largest and most populated of all the Macaronesia region. It is also a place where, when you ask yourself what to see in Tenerife, it offers you a thousand suggestions of things to do and places to visit, above all due to its mild climate.

In Tenerife you will be lucky enough to be able to find and visit unique places, such as the longest volcanic tube in Europe, 17 kilometres long or the Teide National ParkThe city of La Laguna, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007, as well as the city of La Laguna, whose historic centre has also been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1999.

Apart from its natural values, of which there are many, the island also offers many other special places, cities such as its capital, Santa Cruz; well-preserved complexes, leisure areas, museums, parks, etc. Here are five places to see in Tenerife.

Teide National Park

The Teide National Park is located in the centre of the island of Tenerife and is the largest and oldest national park in the Canary Islands. It was declared as such on 22 January 1954 and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

In this national park you can visit the famous Teide volcano which, at an altitude of 3,718 metres, is the highest peak in Spain. You can also visit the Roques de García, enjoy its spectacular viewpoints, ride the cable car or see the stars from one of the best places in the world for observing the universe. You can find out more about the national parks of the Canary Islands at this link.

Historic centre of the city of La Laguna

La Laguna was founded between 1496 and 1497 by the Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo, which is why it is also known as the City of the Adelantados. Since 1999, it has been recognised as a Cultural Asset and World Heritage Site by Unesco. It is also the first colonial city without walls in the Canary Islands and has preserved its original layout practically intact.

The streets of La Laguna are marked by commercial, gastronomic and leisure activity, but above all its monuments and historic buildings stand out. In the city you can visit the Plaza del Adelantado, the church of La Concepción, the Palacio de Lercaro, the Teatro Leal, etc. In the following link you can learn a little more about this wonderful city.

Anaga Rural Park

Less than an hour’s drive from La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife lies Anaga, a massif of sharp-edged mountains and deep ravines, covered in a green blanket of laurel forest. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco on 9 June 2015 and is home to the largest number of endemic species in Europe.

In the Anaga Rural Park you can go on different trails and excursions through the laurel forest, such as the Sendero de los Sentidos, visit impressive viewpoints such as Jardina, swim in incredible wild beaches such as Almáciga or Benijo, or visit villages such as Taganana.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital city

Santa Cruz has been the capital of the island of Tenerife since 1833 and shares the capital of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its port is key to maritime communications and receives both commercial vessels and tourist cruise ships.

It is a cosmopolitan city whose streets invite you to enjoy walks and parks such as the García Sanabria, to appreciate emblematic buildings such as the Adán Martín Auditorium or the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, as well as to enjoy its beaches, such as Las Teresitas, and complexes such as the César Manrique Maritime Park. The city also offers an incredible gastronomic offer. In the following link you can discover seven perfect places to eat in the capital of Tenerife.

Benijo Beach

Benijo is a wild beach of black volcanic sand with an incredible landscape located on the coast of the Anaga Rural Park and belonging to the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If you like nature in its purest state, you can’t miss it. The beach has privileged views of the Roques de Anaga and offers magical sunsets. It is one of the most isolated beaches in the town of Taganana and to access it you have to walk along a path with stairs.

Tenerife offers many more places to see, so be sure to visit the island and discover them all.

The Best Things To Do in Tenerife, The Canary Islands

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that earn me a small commission, at no additional cost to you.

Tenerife is known for its seaside resorts, blue flag beaches, and vibrant nightlife, but the island’s natural landscape and exceptional climate offer more than that. With its volcanoes, Spain’s highest peak, water sports, natural parks, and caves Tenerife is an ideal weekend destination for adventurers.

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that earn me a small commission, at no additional cost to you. I only link to and recommend products that I personally use, and believe my readers will find helpful.

  1. Mount Teide National Park

Mt Teide, Tenerife – Alison Fay Travel Photography

The Teide National Park is a World Heritage Site and is home to Mount Teide, a volcano and the highest peak in Spain, at an altitude of 3,718 meters, on foot or by cable car based on the summit of the last one, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and La Palma can enjoy. If you want to go to the top of the hill, you must obtain a permit in advance.

  1. Siam Park

The Siam Park is a water park on the Costa Adeje and extends over 18 hectares. It houses the largest collection of Thai buildings outside of Thailand, as well as a large selection of waterslides and water slides, both family-friendly and adrenaline-laden. In Europe, this is one of the best.

  1. Go To The Beach

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Beach in Tenerife

Tenerife has more than 400 km of coastline suitable for a variety of beaches, 10 of which have been awarded the Blue Flag. Playa de las Teresitas Santa Cruz is a protected man-made beach made with Saharan sand, popular with locals and tourists alike. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you will find a number of secluded beaches in the main tourist centres, including Playa Bollullo, Playa del Pozo and Playa El Puertito.

  1. Punta De Teno Peninsula

This rugged promontory, ten kilometres from Buenavista, is the westernmost point of the island and is an ideal place to get away from crowds and remove spider webs with some sea air. Admire the active lighthouse on the rocks or relax in the bay and enjoy the breathtaking views of La Gomera, La Palma, and the Teno Mountains.

  1. The Giants Of The Cliff.

Literally translated as “the cliffs of giants”, these magnificent cliffs rise between 500 and 800 meters in height. The Guanches (the first inhabitants of Tenerife) have described this place as a “hell wall” and it is certainly a scary scene. Take a day trip to the city of Los Gigantes, where you can also snorkel, scuba dive, kayak, row, dolphin and whale watching. over the cliffs.

  1. Masca Hilltop Village And Trek

The “lost city” of Masca is a remote mountain community in a spectacular mountain landscape. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and find the beginning of the migration of the Masca gorge, three hours drive from the bay of Masca. From here you can climb up or book a boat trip to Los Gigantes. Guided hikes are available.

  1. Hiking In The Anaga Mountains

If you are looking for something off the tourist route, visit the Anaga Mountains in the northeast of the island. This prehistoric mountain range was formed 7 to 9 million years ago by a volcanic eruption and is the oldest part of the island. A trip to this city gives the impression of returning to another world. There is even a village (El Bailadero) that owes its name to a group of witches who danced around the fires.

  1. Drago Milenario Tree

No trip to Tenerife would be complete without a glimpse of the ancient dragon tree (“dragon tree”), the national symbol of the island. Named for its red resin, which looks like “dragon’s blood” and has many medicinal benefits, it has been revered by the local community for centuries. It is said that this tree, which is 1000 years old, is the oldest of its kind on the island.

  1. Diving And Snorkeling.

The crystalline and temperate waters and fascinating volcanic rock formations make Tenerife a diver’s dream. The island has a large selection of dive centres offering a variety of excursions for all levels, from introductory classes for children, PADI courses for professionals to easy boat trips for those who want to be accompanied but afraid to sink their fingers.

  1. An Architectural Wonder.

Another thing on Tenerife is to admire the elegant, white and modern curves that could only be the work of the famous son of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Some people see a cobra, others a wave and some see a Trojan helmet.

Where to stay

My favourite area of Tenerife is Los Cristianos, a town on the South-west coast of Tenerife. Los Cristianos has a beach, cheap bars and food, boat trips and water sports available. It offer’s access to Mount Teide within 45 minutes, and the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is only about 50 minutes away by car.  Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a great place to stay if you are more into cities than small towns, featuring a beach, historices and lots of shopping.

I always recommend booking a hotel with a pool, so you can have a day or two relaxing at the poolside and enjoying the sunny weather.

Below is a list of hotel’s that have a pool in Tenerife.

Accessibility in Tenerife & accessible hotels

A lot of hotels and attractions in Tenerife offer some level of accessibility to those with mobility issues or using wheelchairs. There may be some restrictions in historic buildings, and at nature attractions. Most towns have mobility scooter hire available, on either a daily or weekly basis. You may have to pay a deposit and will need to show ID when hiring the scooter. There are some accessible rooms available in most hotels, but some hotels are fully wheelchair-accessible throughout the entire hotel complex.

Below is a list of hotels and hostels that have facilities for wheelchair users, but make sure to check with the hotel before booking that their facilities are suitable for your needs.

What to see in Tenerife? Landmarks of the island.

Photo and video.

Tenerife – the largest island of the Canary archipelago , which was repeatedly awarded with laudatory epithets and called dissimilar names. An island of eternal spring, a two-faced piece of land in the Atlantic Ocean – Tenerife is located in two climatic zones at the same time, and here the lush tropics coexist with a dry series of beaches.

This is one of those resorts that tourists don’t flock to for five star hotels. On the island there are more than a dozen magnificent corners that nature has created, and man only carefully protects. If you are wondering what to see in Tenerife in a couple of days, then you must visit the following places after visiting the island. nine0005

Teide Volcano on the island of Tenerife

Teide Volcano is perhaps the main natural attraction of the island. It rises almost 4 kilometers and, together with its surroundings, occupies most of Tenerife. Tourists can easily get by car to a mark of 2. 3 thousand meters, after which they have to choose between a funicular ride, or on foot, but a free walk. Needless to say, what beauties open from the top of Tenerife?

The whole island is in the palm of your hand, and in cloudless weather even the neighboring islands are visible, and the night landscape is completely different from the daytime one. nine0005

But be careful – the last 160 meters that separate you from the summit and the craters, you will not be able to overcome without special permission and passport .

Fortunately, you can print this permission for free at reservasparquesnacionales.es by selecting the appropriate section. The crater itself looks truly impressive – you have every chance to feel like the hero of the famous novel by Jules Verne.

Wondering how long to fly to Tenerife from Moscow? Read our article. nine0005

Read here about the weather in the Canary Islands in January, it’s cool, but the views from the mountain are gorgeous.

Read about the beautiful city of Spain in our article, all about Barcelona.

Lunar landscape

It would be wrong to talk about the volcano as a whole, but not to mention one of its main beauties – the Lunar landscape. This place got its name due to the color of the landscape – it really resembles the Moon or any other desert planet, and especially the mesmerizing white rocks that were formed as a result of a volcanic eruption look in contrast with the black walls of the volcano. nine0005

The lunar landscape was chosen not only by tourists, but also by directors – many fantastic films were filmed here, including Star Wars and the equally famous Planet of the Apes.

Teide National Park

Teide Volcano, of course, occupies a leading position among the attractions of the park, but do not fail to walk around its surroundings. Teide National Park is the largest nature reserve in the Canary Islands: you will find many unusual plants, most of which you will not find anywhere else on earth. nine0005

True, the indigenous fauna is represented rather modestly – colorful birds and scaly reptiles, but more than a dozen animals brought from all over the world live in the reserve. In addition, another volcano awaits you here – Chinyero, in the vicinity of which you can take a walk.

The tourist route is marked with lines of different colors, so you will definitely not go astray.

Tenerife Botanical Garden

But enough about the mountains. After walking along the volcano, you will surely want to visit a lush oasis and relax under the shade of exotic trees, inhaling the scent of flowers. All this and even more is concentrated in one place – the Tenerife Botanical Garden. nine0005

Here you will see with your own eyes coffee and breadfruit trees , one of the richest collections of orchids and the pride of the park – a rubber tree that is over two hundred years old. The tour will not take more than two hours, but the journey will be truly eventful.

Masca Gorge in Tenerife

There are several beautiful legends about the unusual name of this place, but they all come down to the same thing. Once the daughter of a local leader, a wayward and freedom-loving girl, did not want to marry a Spaniard, threw herself off a cliff and fell to her death. nine0005

For many years, the gorge was notorious. Pirates hid in impregnable caves, hunted down merchant ships and attacked them, brutally cracking down on the crew – they say that treasures are still stored in countless grottoes.

Today the small village is accessible to everyone – you can get there by car or choose a mountain hiking tour.

Hell Gorge

Another gorge that scares you with its name, but is unlikely to terrify you. This is a tropical corner that clearly stands out against the background of the desert landscapes of the southern part of the island. The unique flora and fauna, the sound of water and the general atmosphere of tranquility – all this will make you forget about any worries for a long time.

Gran Canaria weather May

What’s the weather like in Gran Canaria in May?

Gran Canaria has lovely weather all year round and it’s nearly summer in May, so things start getting quite hot. The island’s around 150km off the coast of North Africa, which means you’ll get lots of sun and hardly any rain in May.

Microclimates

Gran Canaria’s high mountains mean you’ll get different weather around the island; they protect the south from north easterly winds, keeping you warmer and drier than in the north. There’s less rain on the coast, while the mountains themselves are cooler. The nearby Sahara Desert can make things really hot at times, although the trade winds and cool Canary Current will usually keep you comfortable. Dust storms can also blow in, which are most likely when the seasons are changing.

Averages

The normal high temperature in Gran Canaria is 24ºC in May, which cools to a fairly pleasant 16ºC at night. The usual sea temperature’s 20ºC, while humidity’s low and average rainfall’s just 1mm. You can expect 14 hours of daylight with nine hours of sunshine each day, while UV levels will be very high so sun cream is essential. Sunset’s around 8.45pm for much of May.

Akagera National Park is Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda.

Akagera National Park, Rwanda, is almost unrecognisable today compared to over 20 years ago when it was on the verge of being lost forever. The aftermath of the 1994 genocide had a devastating impact on the environment, making its story of revival even more remarkable. In 2010, African Parks assumed management of Akagera National Park in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), shifting the park’s trajectory from one of oblivion to prosperity and hope.

From the beginning there was a clear joint vision: to transform Akagera from a depleted landscape overrun by more than 30,000 cattle into an income-generating park for the benefit of people and wildlife. Effective law enforcement and strong community engagement was the foundation for rehabilitation. After practically eliminating poaching in just five years, lions were reintroduced in 2015, followed by black rhinos in 2017 and 2019 and in 2021, 30 white rhinos were introduced to the park. Wildlife numbers have grown from less than 5,000 in 2010 to almost 12,000. Besides being a haven for wildlife, the park’s support for income-generating enterprises for local communities is growing. Today, Akagera National Park continues to provide for the 300,000 people living around its boundaries, directly benefitting from its existence.

As a result of our track record in Akagera and over 10 years of successful collaboration with the RDB, in October 2020, the Government once again entered into a long-term agreement to have African Parks, this time to manage Nyungwe National Park. The Rwandan Government is showing how protected areas, with clear vision and under the right management, can support people and wildlife long into the future.

Akagera Highlights

  • In 2021, 30 Southern white rhinos were successfully translocated from Phinda Reserve in South Africa to Akagera in the largest single rhino translocation to date.
  • Wildlife populations have flourished with over 11,000 large mammals counted in a 2021 aerial survey, including 133 elephants (a 20% increase since the 2019), nearly 4,000 buffalos and a lion population of 37.
  • With the help of our counter-poaching canine unit, African Parks overhauled law enforcement to help secure Akagera National Park and, as a result, not one high-value species has been lost to poaching since 2010.
  • More than 2,000 schoolchildren visit Akagera National Park each year, along with teachers and local leaders, as part of the environmental education programme.
  • Pre-Covid-19, Akagera was 80% self-financing, and despite a reduction in visitors due to Covid-19, tourism contributed 47% towards the park’s operating costs in 2021.

On the Horizon

Along with wildlife conservation and community engagement, tourism holds the key to unlocking economic benefits needed for a brighter future for those living within and around Akagera’s border region.

Partners

In late 2010, African Parks signed a joint management agreement with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) establishing the Akagera Management Company with board members from both the RDB and African Parks jointly managing the park.

a Spectacular 422 ft Waterfall close to Hilo

Home » Hilo » Akaka Falls

By Love Big Island | updated

The ʻAkaka falls are a 422 ft (135 m) tall waterfall and are the highlight of the ʻAkaka falls state park. This park is located close to Hilo and a visit to this waterfall should be part of any road trip crossing the Hamakua coast.

There are two waterfalls that you can visit in the park:

Table of contents

  1. The 422 ft Akaka falls (easy to see)
  2. The 400 ft Kahuna falls (slightly more difficult to see)
  3. Entrance Fee + Directions

Table of Contents

  1. The 422 ft Akaka falls (easy to see)
  2. The 400 ft Kahuna falls (slightly more difficult to see)
  3. Entrance Fee + Directions

The ʻAkaka Falls

You can only see the falls after a pleasant and short 0.4-mile hike from the parking lot. This walk is called the ʻAkaka Falls Loop Trail and is an easy hike that is doable for the whole family. Completing it can take up to 1/2 hour if you take your time and the trail head is easy to find: directly off the parking lot.

You can see the top of the ʻAkaka Falls from the parking lot. A short hike takes you to a far more scenic view.

The walk to the ʻAkaka falls takes you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. Try not to rush ahead to see the waterfall but take your time and enjoy the scenery.

The accessible portion of the park lies high on the western shoulder of the deep gorge into which the ‘Akaka waterfall plunges, and the falls can be viewed from several points along the trail through the park.

Be prepared to meet other people on the trail because the ʻAkaka falls are one of the more popular attractions on this side of the island. They also are one of our 5 favorite Big Island Waterfalls.

Walking towards the ʻAkaka Falls lookout point. Credit: Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Heather Goodman

You can find the most up-to-date information on the ʻAkaka falls loop trail on the state park website. You can also take a virtual tour of the ʻAkaka falls loop trail using google, or have a look at what the falls look like if you approach them in the following video:

Watch this video on YouTube

The Kahūnā Falls

There is another waterfall visible from this trail: the Kahūnā Falls. This waterfall is with a 400 ft drop almost as tall as the ʻAkaka falls, but it is difficult to get a good look at the Kahūnā falls from within the park.

There is a small overlook point from where you can see these falls about 800 ft beyond the ʻAkaka falls overlook. The Kahūnā falls are best visible after lots of rain because  the trees on the cliff in front of it shield most of the falls from view.

The Kahuna falls are with 400 ft almost as tall as the Akaka falls (422 ft). However, due to an unfortunate viewing angle from the park these falls are overshadowed, and at best receive a quick look from park visitors

Directions to the ʻAkaka falls

The ʻAkaka falls state park is about 11 miles north of Hilo on the end of ʻAkaka Falls Road (Highway 220), 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu.

The parking area is open between 8:30 am and 6 pm. The park itself is open to walk-ins between sunrise and sunset.

Best time to visit

Try to visit before 11 am to beat the crowds and to see the waterfalls illuminated by the sun. No problem if you are later, the ʻAkaka falls are a wonderful visit rain or shine, crowds or no crowds, and at any time of the day.

Parking + Entrance Fee

Visitors need to pay an entrance fee and, if they make use of the parking area, a parking fee. Payments can only be made by credit card, and we recommend that you pay for parking and entrance prior to arrival due to limited cell reception at the park.

Is it possible to go on a zipline tour at the ʻAkaka falls?

It is not possible to go ziplining at the ʻAkaka falls. The waterfall is located in a state park and cannot be commercially exploited.

The Big Island Zipline tour offered by Skyline Eco Adventures is located halfway between the ʻAkaka falls state park and the ocean, on the Kolekole stream. Their ziplines take you past two waterfalls: one with a 40 ft drop and one with a 200 ft drop. Very impressive, but less than half the height of the ʻAkaka falls!

Over 2 hectares will be planted with boxwood in Sochi

Sochi National Park plans to plant 20,500 boxwood seedlings this year. This plant is under threat of destruction due to moth moths.

“In total, in 2020, it is planned to plant 20.5 thousand boxwood seedlings in their natural habitat. The planting will be carried out on an area of 2.2 hectares, in the place of historical growth of boxwood, by the efforts of three local forestries – Maryinsky, Golovinsky and Lazarevsky,” – says on the official website of the national park, TASS writes.

99% of relic boxwood groves were destroyed in Sochi by pests. This insect came to Sochi in 2012 in preparation for the Olympic Games.

The first stage of planting 1.5 thousand seedlings is scheduled for March 3rd. Boxwood grows extremely slowly, it will take about a hundred years for a new grove to appear.

Colchis boxwood grows in the protected lands of Adygea and Kuban.

▷ Excellent Things to do in Anfi del Mar | Guide 2023

In this post we present a guide to the best beaches in Anfi del Mar and the activities you can do during your holiday. We offer boat trips where you can relax, forget your worries and give yourself up to the pleasure of the sea. You can also enjoy the sun and sand on its exuberant white sandy beaches, where you will find the best conditions for different water sports. So read on and find out a little more about this beautiful town in the south of Gran Canaria.

The best of Anfi del Mar Beach

This is a fantastic beach in Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Mogán. Although it is an artificial beach, it has everything you need to lose yourself for a few days and forget about the hustle and bustle of the city. It is located in the La Verga ravine, which is one of the many cliffs on this side of the island that give it a distinctive and unique air.

On this beach you will have at your disposal all the services you need to enjoy the sun and sand, such as sun loungers and parasols for hire, showers and toilets. It is also very safe because it is protected from the waves and is ideal for children. Because of all these advantages, it receives many visitors all year round.

Water activities in Anfi del Mar

In this area you have a wide range of possibilities to enjoy the sun, the sea and the sand.

  • Parascending: this is an activity in which you are hooked to a parachute and attached with a rope to a boat that goes at high speed. Full adrenaline and fun guaranteed. Don’t worry, it’s a totally safe experience with experts controlling every detail so that you can just enjoy the views of the island from the heights.
  • Banana Boat: get on board with your friends and start betting to see who can hold on the longest. A fun experience for everyone.
  • Paddle surfing: this is a fun activity where you get on a surfboard but control it with a paddle. It’s great fun, especially on the calm waters of this beach.
  • Sea kayaking: take the paddle and let yourself be carried away by the tranquillity of the beautiful sea of the Canary Islands.
  • Jet skiing: get ready to enjoy the sea with your adrenaline pumping. The jet ski will be just for you and you will be the one who decides where to go. It’s great fun and is currently one of the most popular activities in Anfi del Mar.
  • Water skiing: this is a similar activity to snow skiing, but in this case a boat will pull you along at high speed. It is great fun and will make you feel intense emotions.

Snorkelling and scuba diving

Remember that the Canary Islands have a great diversity of marine life and Gran Canaria is home to the greatest biodiversity. If you are a scuba diving enthusiast, you can dive here in peace and quiet. This beach is characterised by its calm waters, ideal for scuba diving.

Its seabed is home to a wide variety of marine species worth seeing and photographing. You will not have enough time to visit and get to know all the beauties hidden in the sea. If you don’t want to go that deep, go snorkelling. Either way the experience is wonderful. If you are just learning or have never done it before, there are many companies specialised in scuba diving where you can hire an instructor to guide you through this new experience.

Boat trips

This is one of the best ways to enjoy the island from the sea. Take a boat trip from Anfi del Mar to Puerto de Mogan or Arguineguín, passing the most beautiful and enigmatic places along the coast. Choose between motor boats, pedal boats, luxury sailing boats and speed boats.

During the trip you will enjoy the sighting of dolphins, whales and other marine animals. The tour includes places where different cetaceans pass by, which you can admire from the safety of the boat.

La Verga Beach

It is a beautiful urban beach with little waves, perfect for the enjoyment of children and the whole family. Although it is not very large, it is very comfortable and has all the services such as showers, toilets, bars and of course sun loungers and umbrellas for rent. It is also next to the promenade where you will find a variety of alternatives to have a good time.

Balito Beach

We mention this beach as one of the best things to do in Anfi del Mar because it’s right next to it and is an ideal place to escape and unwind. It is not as well known as the continuous beaches and has slightly different characteristics. There is no wave protection so the waters are more active. In addition to this, the shore has a lot of pebbles so it is not as crowded.

Maroa Island

This is a small and charming artificial island in the shape of a heart on the Anfi del Mar beach. It is arranged to liven up the stay of visitors. You can reach it by stairs or by swimming. But if you wish, put on your snorkelling goggles and swim around the island to enjoy the beauty of the sea and the fauna that inhabits it.

Here you will find a restaurant with hammock services and the best meals. It’s definitely a getaway we all deserve, so you can’t leave without visiting this romantic island.

Anfi del Mar Fun Facts

The Anfi del Mar resort was started in the 1990s. It was born as an initiative to recreate the beauty of the Caribbean beaches in Gran Canaria, for which tons of white sand were brought from the Bahamas. But as it was already a beautiful place with a favourable climate, it was not difficult to achieve the desired result. They also thought about reducing the strong waves, so they installed a breakwater and achieved a dream beach where many people go to rest and relax.

As you can see, Anfi del Mar is a marvel and fulfils the purpose for which it was designed. It is an attractive beach that has nothing to envy to the Caribbean coasts. If you wish to visit it, we can help you choose the activities and excursions that best suit your needs. Contact us via email, WhatsApp or fill out our contact form, we will be happy to help you so that you don’t have to worry about the small details, we have been helping our clients to enjoy an unforgettable holiday for many years.

Gran Canaria Info – The Tragic Irony of Anfi Del Mar’s Decade Of Madness

Anfi Resort remains one of Europe’s top timeshare complexes, but a 10-year spree of getting holidaymakers to sign illegal timeshare contracts is costing it dear.

When the Anfi Resort Complex opened for business in 1992 it was one of the world’s most luxurious timeshare resorts. Its focus on quality and service made it a cut above most of Gran Canaria’s hotels and accommodation. Years later, it’s still one of Europe’s leading timeshare resorts and remains unmatched in Gran Canaria.

Billionaire founder Bjorn Lyng always wanted a quality resort and made sure that he got one. He faced Anfi’s blocks with stone, built a huge, heart-shaped island and shipped in Caribbean sand for the beach.

Anfi was Lyng’s baby and it cost a fortune. Once th first blaocks of Anfi Resort opened, the race was on to get the money back and build more. Gran Canaria’s timeshare boom had started.

Between 1992 and 1999, Anfi’s sellers did pretty much as they chose; it was timeshare’s Wild West period and Anfi’s vast network of salespeople sold timeshares as fast as Lyng could build the resort.

Spanish law, written before timeshare even existed, wasn’t up to the job of protecting people from the cowboys.

The fateful day when the law changed but Anfi didn’t

On January 4, 1999, Spain brought in a strict timeshare law. It outlawed lots of the things Anfi, and Gran Canaria’s other timeshare firms, were putting in their contracts. But timeshare didn’t change its sales tactics or contracts. It just carried on as if it was above the law.

Gran Canaria’s timeshare resorts, including the Anfi flagship, were breaking the law every day. The Wild West days were over and the sheriff was heading into town.

Did Lyng know that thousands of the contracts his sales teams were signing were illegal? It’s hard to imagine that a man who built a billion euro empire didn’t know exactly what was going on. Perhaps, like many successful men, he thought he could make any problem go away. He certainly had a huge legal team.

Timeshare lawyers versus consumer rights

Looking back, Anfi must wish that its lawyers ad put in the effort to write legal timeshare contracts. A few days work back then would have saved the company a fortune.

Instead, Anfi’s army of lawyers had one job: To make sure that nobody ever got their money back no matter how dodgy their contract was.

While the sales teams were pushed to make more money, the legal department did their best to hold on to it. Lawyers blocked, delayed and appealed everything. Fighting Anfi because such a long-winded and expensive process than many owners with obviously illegal contracts just gave up.

But while Spanish law is slow, it is also remorseless. In the end, Anfi and timeshare just ran out of legal tricks.

In 2015, the first case against Anfi reached the Spanish Supreme Court. Inevitably, because it was so illegal, Anfi lost. Then it lost again, and again.

It’s now lost 25 supreme court cases; an unenviable record.

The result is that Anfi resort is now returning money to owners with illegal contracts when the courts order it to.

Not because it wants to, but because it has to.

Once the Spanish Supreme Court rules, there is no wriggle room no matter how many lawyers you have.

This means that if you’re one of the thousands of Anfi owners with an illegal contract, you can (finally) get your money back.

Is Anfi really the bad guy in Gran Canaria?

This is the tradgedy of Anfi. It’s still a superb resort. It still offers excellent quality and service. And many of its owners are happy and always have been.

But that decade of madness after 1998 is now costing it dear. As the island’s biggest timeshare resort, it has the highest number of illegal contracts. And the most to lose.

Anfi faces an avalanche of legal cases over the next few years. Nobody knows what the effect will be.

But we do know that it will have to pay out when the courts tell it to.

The victims of Anfi’s decade of greed are finally getting their money back.

Is your Gran Canaria timeshare contract illegal?

If you signed a timeshare contract after January 4, 1999, there’s a good chance that it contains an illegal clause and that you can go to court, get it annulled, and get you money money back.

Just fill in this form and the top Gran Canaria timehare law firm (the one that won all those supreme court judgements and the only one that has beaten Anfi) will be in touch within 24-hours.

THIS ISN’T A SCAM: The CLA has won 25 Supreme Court Judgements in the lst 18 months and is winning cases against Gran Canaria timeshare companies every week.

It’s not just Anfi: Here’s the full list of Gran Canaria and Canary Islands timeshare resorts that have lost in court.

And here’s our FAQ about exactly what is illegal in a Spanish timeshare contract.

A small paradise in Great Canaria / Travel.

Ru / Countries and regions

The Canary Islands have nothing to do with canaries. Although in
there has always been confusion about the names of the islands – in Spanish
the word “canario” has several meanings, and from the Latin of the Canaries
translated as islands of dogs. According to the ancient Roman scholar
Pliny the Elder, on one of the seven islands of the archipelago were
huge dogs. Who knows, maybe this island was just that
Gran Canaria – extremely original and unlike others
The islands are a piece of Spanish land off the coast of Africa. nine0003

The island of Gran Canaria is comparable in size to Moscow, but its shape is
resembles an apple with a small dent in the northwest and a “twig”
in the north-east.

This volcano, extinct 40 million years ago, is paradise
terrestrial. Such Gran Canaria, along with unique landscapes, makes
microclimate. The hot breath of the Sahara carried to the island
legendary sirocco, softened by a cool undercurrent
Atlantic and as a result a unique subtropical climate is formed,
turning the Canary Islands into a desirable place for tourists from all over the world. nine0003

The season in Gran Canaria lasts all year round. In the northern part
the islands are more or less humid, the temperature reaches 24-26 C, in the south
— dry, 28-30 C, water temperature in the waters of the beaches 22-23 C. C
Ecology on the island is also all right. The healing air of the island

made it possible to turn the island, which only 25 years ago, into the times
General Franco, was covered exclusively by tomato plantations, in
European class resort. This can be judged by the high level
hotels, food and entertainment. But at the same time, Gran Canaria is not

to say that a good meal in an ordinary restaurant costs $10-15, although

Better living on the south coast in a hotel with a sea view, somewhere

Up in the mountains and far away from the ocean is where you’ll find this beautiful hike between Cruz del Carmen and Chinamada. It was one of our favourite areas in Tenerife to hike. It’s why we came back and hiked from Punta Del Hidalgo to Chinamada as well.

It’s crazy to think you can drive one direction and feel like you’re hiking on Mars with all this volcanic rock and then drive another direction to the Anaga Nature Park and be surrounded by a totally different type of landscape.

For this hike, you’ll travel to the northeastern part of Tenerife deep in the Anaga where you’ll find Cruz del Carmen. Once you get there, you will find the visitor center, a bathroom, a restaurant, and parking. This is the starting point for the adventure that awaits. The starting point is super convenient because there’s a bus stop and parking lot right next to the beginning of the trail.

From there the beautiful views await. It’s quite magical because you really don’t know what to expect from the hike. It starts in a dense forest with no views in sight and then all of a sudden everything will open up and you’ll be blown away!

Practical information about Cruz del Carmen to Chinamada

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Hiking directions from Cruz Del Carmen to Chinamada

Start at the Cruz Del Carmen Restaurant

The starting point couldn’t be more convenient. Right where the busses drop off, and the cars park, you can find Cruz Del Carmen Restaurant. This is the place to use the toilet if you need to go before the hike or else you’ll have to wait until you get to Chinamada.

Once you are ready to go you’ll walk past the restaurant on the right side. You’ll see signage and a map to make sure you’re going the right way!

You’ll start right away with a nice trail in some thick Tenerife Forest with some up and down hills to get the hike started. Thankfully, the trail was nice on the day we went but from what locals told us, when it rains, the beginning of this hike can get quite muddy and slippery so take that into account when planning this hike.

You’ll continue through the forest for a few kilometres! You won’t find many viewpoints throughout this part but the peace and quiet and fresh air was just so nice that even this section of the hike was fun.

There are a few points where the path may split but just stay on what looks like the main trail and you’ll be fine. Some signs that will say “Chinamada” to confirm you’re on the right track.

You’ll walk through some fields with little houses around. At some point it may even feel like you’re walking on someone’s property, don’t worry, you’re on the right track!

Then you will come to a road where you will take a left and get your first glimpse of Roque de Taborno.

Take a left at the fork in the road towards Chinamada

Enjoy the awesome views of Roque de Taborno. You’ll be seeing a bunch of it on this section of the hike as well. Welcome to the loop trail part of the hike. You can go either way and end up at Chinamada but we recommend doing this section of the hike clockwise. This time we actually did research and made sure we hiked the right way unlike when we hiked up Mt Guajara near Mt Teide and did it the opposite way. Thankfully we didn’t make the same mistake this time.

This section of the hike is where the trail really starts to open up and you get to see the real beauty of the Anage National Forest. The viewpoints along this stretch of the hike are absolutely breathtaking. That’s why we almost recommend an extra hour for the hike because we’re sure you’ll be stopping to take pictures multiple times!

One of our favourite parts of the hike is all the terrace fields that have been carved into the mountains. Plus the fact that they look so lush and green just makes for amazing scenery. It felt like some of the freshest air in the world. Words truly don’t do this stretch from Cruz del Carmen to Chinamada justice.

If you’re lucky you may even pass by a bunch of goats blocking your path and then a potato garden nearby as well. It’s all part of the experience hiking in the Anaga Mountains.

Then out of nowhere the famous mountain village of Chinamada appears behind a group of mountains. There’s a reason this hike is famous and it’s because of this little town. The history and the architecture is incredible.

Explore Chinamada and the amazing viewpoints

The fact that farmers built houses into the mountain and still live there is fascinating. It’s like if you mixed Hobbiton and Fred Flintstone’s cave together you would get one of these houses. So unique and impressive at the same time. There’s a good chance you may even run into a local or two who are still living in these houses built into the rocks of the mountain.

There are a few main things you can do in the village along with admiring the crazy houses. You can stop by Restaurante La Cueva. It’s actually built into a mountain and has a cave-like feel. We, unfortunately, didn’t have a great experience there (service wasn’t great and they charged for everything including ketchup) but most of the other people seemed to be enjoying their food. We’re not saying “don’t go there” but we do want to be honest with our experience.

We do recommend checking out la Iglesia de San Ramon! A cute little church for the locals up in the mountains. It’s next to this pretty square. It’s so cool that there’s actually a community of people that live in this remote area of the island.

Lastly, and maybe even the best part of Chinamada is only a few-minute hike from the Iglesia de San Ramon. It’s this beautiful viewpoint that overlooks the northern coast of Tenerife. You can even see the city of Punta del Hidalgo far in the distance. Of course, you have to roam around Chinamada and see the houses but this viewpoint you cannot miss!

You may even see the coastal town of Punta Del Hidalgo. PDH is the starting point for another hike that ends up in Chinamada. Some people even continue all the way down to Punta Del Hidalgo and catch a bus back from there. If you’re up for a big hike you can start from Cruz Del Carmen and end up Punta Del Hidalgo.

Head back towards Las Carboneras

Enjoyed Chinamada? Las Carboneras is just as pretty and unique as Chinamada. To get to Las Carboneras you will continue the loop trail clockwise and actually walk on the road for a little part of it. There will be signs for Las Carboneras but if you miss them just make sure you’re walking on Calle el Montito and it will bring you back towards this beautiful colorful town.

You may see a few cars on the road but you’re more likely to get passed by some cyclists. The roads up here in the Anaga National Forest are famous for cycling because of the views and elevation. Next time we’re definitely coming back with bikes.

So as you continue to the next checkpoint of Las Carboneras you will get to a point where a path goes up into the mountain in the direction of the town. It’s about a 5-minute detour but offers better views than just walking on the road. We recommend hiking up for the birds-eye view of all the terrace fields and the aerial view of all the colourful houses of Las Carboneras.

The trail is quite short and will quickly bring you back down to the main road you were just walking on moments ago. In a few seconds, you will make it to the last town and checkpoint on this hike before hiking back to Mirador Cruz del Carmen.

Explore the colourful town of Las Carboneras

Carboneras is a small but beautiful little town tucked away in the mountains. A little restaurant and a cute little church are the two things we recommend checking out. If you want to try some local Spanish food that’s common in this part of Tenerife then Restaurante Tesegre will have it.

We walked around the streets, said hi to the locals, and walked to the cute little church in town. We didn’t go inside but the area where the church is located is absolutely stunning. You’re surrounded by mountains, colorful houses, and terrace fields. Mix in the fresh air and peace and quiet and you could call it paradise.

There aren’t any houses built like caves into the mountains like Chinamada but Las Carboneras has its own glow to it. Especially with all the vibrant colours.

Back to Mirador Cruz del Carmen

Once you’ve explored Las Carboneras you will continue on the road out of the village until you find a staircase back into the forest. Take that path up the stairs and after some time you will come back to the junction where you started the loop section of the hike.

Enjoy the last few views of the gorgeous mountains and Roque de Taborno before heading back towards the forest where the views disappear but the smell and sound of nature stay near.

You’ll have your last few kilometers hiking back up to the Mirador Cruz del Carmen where the hike began.

One last recommendation we don’t want to forget about is at Cruz del Carmen the beginning/end of the hike there is a very cool viewpoint that overlooks the city of San Cristobal de la Laguna and Mt Teide. So don’t forget to check it out before or after your hike.

We totally forgot about it but saw some pictures and the view looks amazing!

How to get to Cruz Del Carmen

If you want to take your car then we recommend parking at the Mirador the Cruz del Carmen car park. It’s basically the starting point for the hike. Here is the exact point on Google Maps for the information center. Here’s everything you need to know about renting a car in Tenerife.

You can also take the bus from almost anywhere on the island. You may have to transfer and the buses may not go that often but you can get there by bus. The bus also stops directly at Cruz del Carmen so it’s not like you have to walk far from the bus stop.

You can check out Rome2Rio (and change the starting city if you aren’t coming from La Laguna) and you’ll be able to see the bus schedule from where you are. You will have to get to San Cristobal de la Laguna and from there take a bus to Cruz del Carmen.  Car or public transport, it’s easy to get to!

Where to stay when exploring the Anaga National Forest

We could recommend a few places to stay depending on what you’re looking for. Puerto de la Cruz in the North has much more nature and greenery and a chill vibe.

El Médano in the South is very much a surf, holiday, party town. Regardless of where you stay though you can get anywhere on the island fairly easily so don’t worry about that. Just pick a place where you think you’d have the best time!

There are tons of other places to stay on the island that are absolutely worth it but the two we mentioned above are places we’ve actually stayed and can recommend.

Before you go hike to Chinamada

We first recommend checking the weather to make sure it’s not too windy or rainy. You’re going to hike on quite a muddy trail if it rains and it’s not very pleasant. It’s a lot nicer and especially with all the views to go on a sunny day. You can see the weather in Las Mercedes (a town next to the beginning of the hike) here.

The busses run quite often so you don’t need to worry about that. Also, the parking lot is quite safe if you take your car. It’s a busy area with the restaurant and the viewpoint so there’s always people around.

What to bring on the trail

We hiked to Chinamada on a sunny day that turned rainy. Apparently this is quite normal in this part of the island so come prepared for that. It never hurts to be a little over prepared than under!

You’re not exposed to the sun for the whole hike but when you are the sun gets really warm so sunscreen and water are definite musts.

So bring:

  • Water! We always fill up our LifeStraw bottles before hikes and even during them when we can. Make sure to fill it up beforehand
  • Sunscreen is highly recommended when hiking in Tenerife. Even though it may not seem like you’re exposed to the sun much on these hikes there’s definitely sections where you will be completely exposed to the sun.
  • A power bank because you never know when you’re going to run out of battery. Especially with the amount of pictures you’ll be taking and flashlight use throughout the tunnels.
  • Bring some food! Have a picnic at one of the viewpoints and take it all in.
  • Hiking poles are always nice to have! The incline and decline on most hikes on the island isn’t that crazy but it’s always nice to have a set of hiking poles.
  • Hiking shoes are also recommended on this hike. The trail is well maintained but there are stairs, mud, and loose terrain at certain parts so it’s nice to have proper, waterproof hiking shoes for it.

You can check out this great list of hiking gear to get some more inspiration!

Recap of

We hope you enjoy this lovely hike that takes you to a few fascinating villages up in the Anaga Mountains. There are so many amazing hiking trails in Tenerife, especially in the Anaga Forest. We hope you enjoy this beautiful island and do a ton of hiking! You can find a bunch more inspiration for Tenerife hikes here.

Enjoy hiking and exploring new places in Tenerife! It’s fun getting away from the touristy crowds in the city to quiet trails outdoors with amazing views.

Have fun!

Anaga Natural Park – a fabulous forest in Tenerife

Anaga in the southeast of Tenerife is a series of sharp mountains and deep gorges covered with green laurel forest and dotted here and there with charming villages. Anaga is less than an hour’s drive from La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and from Tenerife’s capital and main port, Santa Cruz.

Getting to know Anaga is a journey to a place with a special flavor, here you seem to be transported to that era when the relationship between man and the environment was closer.

Tour to Anaga

The ideal tour of Anaga usually passes through the tourist center of Cruz del Carmen, from where several hiking trails start. Then it is worth heading towards Taganana to enjoy the lush laurel forest and incredible views of the mountains and the coast. To relax, there is nothing better than a swim and a plate of fresh fish on the beaches of Benijo or Roque de Las Bodegas. If you wish, you can spend the night in Anaga in one of the many houses rented to eco-tourism lovers.

Laurel Forest (Monteverde) and Cruz del Carmen Tourist Center

In the heart of the Anaga Natural Park and close to the historic center of La Laguna is the Cruz del Carmen. It is a visitor center and a small museum dedicated to the vegetation, fauna and traditions of Anaga. Next to them, visitors can enjoy the views from the large observation deck, from which the silhouette of the Teide volcano can be seen against the sky.

Cruz del Carmen has a family restaurant and cafeteria where you can have a bite to eat or a proper lunch.

The wet laurel forests (monteverde), so characteristic of Anaga Rural Park, surround Cruz del Carmen, inviting you to enjoy nature and get to know 19 different tree species that give Anaga the look of a jungle that is hard to resist exploring.

Monteverde is a belt of evergreen deciduous forests of the western and central Canary Islands, located at an altitude of 400-1500 m above sea level under constant influence of the trade winds.

Trekking routes in Anaga

Anaga Natural Park hides a network of trails among its laurel forests and ravines that pass through different corners of these mountains. The popularity of Anagi among hikers is due to the variety of routes and the richness of the landscapes: to enjoy both the laurel forest and the coast, the most popular trail leading to the village of Taganana, as it allows you to end the hike with a dip in the sea.

Ideal for families with children and people with reduced mobility, the Path of the Senses is quite small, well equipped, but allows you to fully experience contact with nature. An option for the more adventurous is the circular Chamorga trail, which offers breathtaking views of the Anaga cliffs and a walk through an abandoned farm surrounded by dragon trees.

Wild beaches

The coast of the Anaga Natural Park, washed by the Atlantic Ocean, is perhaps the ideal place to enjoy the sea, tranquility and natural landscape. On some of its beaches and bays, such as Almaciga, you can find restaurants serving traditionally prepared fish or seafood.

The beaches of Benijo and Roque de las Bodegas, located in the north of Anaga, are loved by surfers.

Volcanoes are as dangerous as they are majestic

Volcanoes are as dangerous as they are majestic. Over 50 eruptions occur annually on our planet. What causes volcanoes to form and erupt, and where are they most likely to occur? Read about it in English with translation into Russian.

Volcanoes of the planet

Our planet has a violent soul. Majestic and often destructive volcanic explosions are collected imagination. Krakatoa, Mount Saint Helens, Etna, Eyjafjallajökull [ei-ya-fyat-LA-yer-kitle] Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano in Iceland… The images simultaneously strike fear and awe in our hearts. But how did these giant mountains form and where does their destructive force come from?

Magma is the blood of the Earth

At least 50 eruptions rock the Earth each year meaning our planet is literally bursting a part of the things. The Earth’s crust is made up of about 17 slabs of land called tectonic plates, that float on a super heated magma that makes up most of the planet’s interior. Magma is Earth’s lifeblood turning restlessly beneath the crust. And wherever it can it’s trying to burst through. When magma reaches the surface, then, a volcano is formed.

Active volcanoes

Our planet is home to some 500 active volcanoes. While some volcanoes like those in Hawaii break through a thin point in the crust called a Hot spot, the vast majority of volcanoes occur on active fault lines where tectonic plates meet. The most volatile region is the Ring of Fire, a geological fold belt that rims the Pacific Ocean and roughly holds 75% of all the Earth’s volcanoes.

Although some volcanoes, like those in Hawaii, break through a thin spot in the crust called a hotspot, the vast majority of volcanoes are on active fault lines where tectonic plates meet. The most unstable region is the ring of fire – a geological folded belt that frames the Pacific Ocean and contains about 75% of all terrestrial volcanoes. nine0003

Two forms of volcanoes

Typically, volcanoes take one of two forms. Shield volcanoes wide and broad with lava usually slowly oozing out of them, and composite or strato volcanoes steeper and more violent. When hot liquid magma reaches the surface whether in a slithering flow or a booming eruption we call it lava. Though molten lava may seem threatening, it’s not known to move quickly. A volcano’s pyroclastic flow is far more deadly. Its poisonous ash cloud can race down the slope of a volcano like a bullet train obliterating everything in its path at speeds topping 100 miles per hour. It’s what stopped the residents of Pompeii dead in their tracks. nine0003

The pyroclastic flow of volcanoes is much more deadly. Its poisonous ash cloud can roll down the side of a volcano like a high-speed train, obliterating everything in its path at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. This is what stopped the inhabitants of Pompeii, who died on the way. nine0003

Volcanoes are part of the planet’s life cycle

But despite the volcanoes brutal destruction it is also a force of beauty and rebirth for the planet. Lava creates new lands where life can flourish. Like it or not volcanoes are part of the planet’s life cycle. As the Earth continues to explode, gurgle, and slither its molten lava out, we must learn to live side-by-side with its awesome power.

Volcanoes

Volcanoes are huge holes in the earth’s crust, from which hot streams of rocks erupt outward. Volcanoes that erupt periodically are active volcanoes. Those that can potentially be active in the future are called dormant. And those that have stopped spewing lava flows from themselves are extinct.

The volcano consists of: a crater through which lava erupts; the vent through which it passes; volcanic chamber containing magma. A cloud of volcanic ash and gas always appears above the crater. And the “body” of the volcano itself is formed by flows of solidified lava.

According to various data, there are from 840 to 1300 active volcanoes in the world, including those on land and under water. Data varies because some volcanoes fall asleep, some wake up, and some completely stop their activity. Earthquakes that provoke the activity of volcanoes occur on Earth every 30 seconds. At the moment, the largest active volcano in the world is Mauna Loa. It is located in the Hawaiian Islands. It last erupted in 1984.
