La Palma Island. Part 1

Our first destination was the island of La Palma. Finally reaching the place where we were to spend 2 weeks, we were delighted! Two-room apartment with a huge terrace overlooking the sea and countless banana plantations, a swimming pool and green palm trees around, paragliders hovering over the mountains – all this caused a storm of emotions in us, and we hurried to plunge into the pool (fortunately Maya was sleeping soundly) 🙂

nine0005

Our apartments are located 5 minutes drive from the city of Puerto Naos. But, unfortunately, you can’t go on foot, since the road leading there is intended exclusively for cars, there is no footpath. But there is a bus stop right in front of the entrance to the apartment, buses run every hour. But we rented a car for the duration of our stay on La Palma.

Puerto Naos is a small town on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Before the city became a tourist city, local residents (of whom there are only 979 in the 2011 census) made their living by fishing and banana farming. During the Cold War, a US military base was located here to track Soviet submarines. It is a pity that now nothing is left of it – in 2007 it was dismantled. Now there are 2 fairly large grocery stores in the city, a fruit shop (where, by the way, we bought the freshest, sweetest, honeyed mangoes! But there are plenty of other locally produced fruits – pineapples, bananas, papaya, passion fruit, cactus fruit. There was even a cherry , however, zavozny). There are also restaurants, beach shops, but there are very few of them, and they do not hurt the eyes at all, as, for example, in Gran Canaria. nine0005

There are very few tourists in the city. The beaches are almost empty. What we love 🙂 The tourists we have are 99% German pensioners who came to hike in the mountains. It’s just wonderful! A man is 70 years old, and he has a backpack over his shoulders and goes hiking in the mountains. I also want to be like this in retirement 🙂 These same pensioners also fly here on paragliders! In order to fly here over the volcanoes, you need a license (like the rights to a car), but pensioners took care of this back in Germany, but they already came here fully armed, and even with their own equipment, which, by the way, weighs from 50 kg! nine0005

Of course, I could not resist and also wanted to fly 🙂 You don’t need a license to fly in tandem, as an experienced instructor controls the parachute.
To tell the truth – it’s not scary at all! But it is very beautiful to look at the city, banana plantations, the ocean, volcanoes from a height! If you’re lucky, you might even see a whale in the ocean!
The only scary thing was when my instructor Lee started circling the parachute at such a speed that his cheeks swelled in the wind so that his teeth were almost bared. And so we fell down 🙂 And I shot everything on GoPro. nine0005

The ocean in Puerto Naos is wonderful! The beach is clean, there are changing rooms and showers. The ocean water is warmest! This is probably the warmest water for the open sea, in which I have ever swam. It was very strange at first that of all the people who were on the beach, although there were few of them, only a couple of people were swimming. The water is very warm! But everyone was apparently stopped by big waves, which were really strong, and knocked down even an adult.

This beach is of course not very suitable for small children, as the waves are very strong all the time. But on the other hand, Maya played with the sand and just fell asleep wonderfully and slept for a couple of hours without motion sickness to the sound of the waves.

Puerto Naos sunsets are also very beautiful!

Here is the sunset from our apartments

La Palma is an island with very low light pollution. That is why the largest telescope in the world is located here, which is called the Great Canary Telescope and is located on the peak of the volcano.

Best region to stay in tenerife: Where To Stay In Tenerife?

A Digital Nomad & Remote Guide To Tenerife

Tenerife has been increasingly in the spotlight as a place for working remotely.

In fact, Nomad List, the well-known database of remote work destinations, currently has it ranked #7 globally based on variables such as cost, WiFi, and climate. This makes it higher-ranked than nomad hotspots like Tulum, Ubud on Bali, or Medellin.

I spent some time working from different locations on Tenerife, so I can share with you some of my impressions here.

Tenerife is not always the most “authentic” island from a tourism point of view; some parts are very mass tourism-oriented, although you can escape this particularly in the north and northeast. Tenerife is definitely ideal for remote working, especially if you’re looking to escape the European winter.

For more about hiking and tourist activities in Tenerife, don’t miss my Tenerife travel guide. For a comparison with Gran Canaria, view my Canaries nomad guide.

Hiking in Anaga mountains

Why work remotely from Tenerife?

Tenerife had seen a steady trickle of nomads arriving over the past few years, but it seems it really got onto the nomad map in 2020.

During my stay I spoke with Tenerife Work & Play, a local initiative, who told me the covid-19 pandemic had led to overwhelming interest, as Europeans sought sunny places to work while having the opportunity to work remotely.

This was also exactly why I’d come to the island; a chance to avoid winter lockdowns and spend my time working online and hiking on the weekends.

Tenerife definitely has some attractive qualities for a remote work location.

Las Teresitas Beach, near Santa Cruz

Perfect climate. Being at a similar latitude as southern Morocco, the winters on Tenerife are still sunny and warm. Thanks to being in the Atlantic, the summer also doesn’t get too hot.

Convenient. It may seem remote due to its distance from continental Europe, but Tenerife is highly developed and is an easy place to live. Amazon.es delivers to Tenerife, and there are all the stores, gyms, and other conveniences you might need. Don’t think of it as a remote island so much as it has all the facilities typical of mainland Spain.

Easy to reach. Thanks to Tenerife being a big tourist destination (especially the south), you can easily fly there from almost anywhere in Europe and these flights are often very cheap.

Reasonable costs. It’s not as cheap as, say, Thailand, but the costs in Tenerife are certainly low by European standards. An apartment may cost about 1000 EUR a month. Keep in mind the more local north of the island is cheaper than the touristy south.

Outdoors. Activities like hiking, surfing, paragliding, and scuba diving are all easy to do on this large volcanic island.

When speaking to other nomads on Tenerife, other benefits that I heard mentioned quite a few times included a high level of safety (including for solo women) as well as a ‘complete lack of mosquitos compared to Bali’, which I thought was a funny but valid thing to mention!

Digital nomad & remote hubs on Tenerife

Unlike other destinations, on Tenerife there isn’t really one single area where all digital nomads or remote workers hang out.

If you are staying for only a short while or want to be able to immediately socialize and meet up with many digital nomads, then perhaps Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria may be a more favorable location, as it has a more concentrated nomad community. (On Gran Canaria, most people seem to hang out in the capital.)

That said, Tenerife benefits from having several specific areas spread out over the island. Co-living places will also provide a lot of instant socialization and community if you’re looking for this.

Here are some suggested places to look for on Tenerife.

Santa Cruz

The Tenerifian capital city has by far the most co-working locations and the most local accommodation.

From Santa Cruz it’s 20 minutes to the beach, 30 minutes to the mountains, and 20 minutes by tram to the charming historical town of La Laguna. This makes it a great base.

I liked Santa Cruz but I should mention it has the least appeal in a tourist sense. It feels very much like a normal city, with plenty of modern apartment blocks, shopping centers, several busy highways, and so on.

Santa Cruz is an ideal spot for just ‘living like a local’, and you may be able to benefit from relatively cheaper rents in this city compared to other locations that are more favored by tourists and expats, though in my opinion it is not necessarily the most beautiful or historic place on the Canaries.

Public transport connections from Santa Cruz are predictably very good though since it’s the capital, so that is another factor weighing in its favor.

The co-working offices in Santa Cruz appear to be more oriented to local Spaniards, which can be a pro or con depending on what you’re looking for. The co-work Workeamos comes most recommended by nomads, as it said to have a mix of locals and foreigners working from there.

La Oratava

This town could be your best pick if you’re more into staying in a characteristic old town. La Oratava has its share of historical buildings, a nice municipal garden, and lovely views of the Mt. Teide volcano.

La Oratava is located in the very north center of Tenerife, about half an hour’s drive from the northern airport. This side of the island tends to be greener but also wetter as it faces the Atlantic trade winds. Those who prefer the beaches and surfing may want to look further south, but I happened to like the north quite a lot, as it’s more the zone where local people tend to live.

The best thing about La Oratava is that it’s home to Nine Coliving, an amazingly homely coliving inside a historic building. It has a co-working office that overlooks the town’s main square, a rooftop terrace, and various accommodation offerings. I did not stay at Nine Coliving but I visited it and was impressed with the overall vibe, which seemed very communal and cozy.

There is also a local co-working office called Tándem a short walk from the town’s center.

Despite being a smaller town, La Oratava has plenty of conveniences including a small shopping center, many restaurants, and several gyms.

South Tenerife (El Medano)

The south of Tenerife is in general way more commercialized than the north. I have to be honest: the resort areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas did not appeal very much to me. It’s really a mass tourism hub for people on package holidays or for British groups that want to party 24/7. Lots of high-rise hotels, mega resorts, etc.

Not to be too snooty, I should say that this can probably be quite a fun area, as there is lot of entertainment around as well as jet-skiing, scuba diving and windsurfing.

But if I had to recommend an area in the south, it would be the town of El Medano. It’s a very short drive from the southern airport but far away from the hubbub of the major resort areas. It’s a really nice and liveable place with mostly low-rise development and plenty of local shops and restaurants mixed with the tourist-oriented ones.

El Medano is the perfect choice if you want to be in the best climate zone in Tenerife and like to spend lots of time in and around the sea. The town has about half a dozen surf shops and several kitesurfing schools.

Work ‘n Mates is the local co-working office in El Medano. Relatively nearby to El Medano is Amarilla Coliving. This is a set of holiday villas and apartments which a few years ago were reimagined as a digital nomad and remote worker community.

La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the historic capital of Tenerife and the place that was once first colonized. If you take the tram, it’s about 20 minutes from the modern capital Santa Cruz.

I stayed in La Laguna for a while and just purely based on the charms of the city it was my favorite place. I would argue the pedestrianized center of La Laguna is the most beautiful and cozy in Tenerife. Sometimes the colorful low-rise buildings reminded me a bit of colonial towns in South America, which is not a coincidence of course.

I enjoyed the selection of nice restaurants, craft beer, specialty coffee, and brunch places in La Laguna, which formed part of an enjoyable routine during my stay. La Laguna is also known a bit as a university town so there are plenty of cheap eats and bars set up for students.

There aren’t co-works or co-livings to recommend in La Laguna. It’s more of a place to stay in an apartment (which is what I did).

La Laguna has just one downside: since it’s located at a higher elevation, it gets quite a bit colder there. Whereas on the coast I could still walk in a t-shirt even in winter, I often had to grab my coat in La Laguna. This microclimate is probably why you hear less about La Laguna among remote workers, but I still think its charms deserve a mention!

Candelaria

Finally, I should mention this small town near the sea on the eastern coast near Santa Cruz.

Maraya Coliving is based here, which was still under construction while I was on Tenerife, but has now opened its doors.

WiFi speed on Tenerife

The internet is fantastic on Tenerife and on the Canaries generally, so you don’t have to worry about this.

While staying in different places on Tenerife, I regularly had speeds that were faster than my home fiber internet on mainland Portugal.

The Canaries benefit from having many undersea internet cables routing through them, as well as having high-speed fiber internet in nearly all of the developed areas. I did find that several areas had poor ADSL internet only, such as Punta del Hidalgo (in a remote corner) or in the mountains around the central crater. I mention this only as I was searching for Airbnbs in more remote areas; the normal towns and cities have great internet.

Of course, if you stay in accommodation specifically targeted to digital nomads (like the co-livings and co-working offices mentioned here), you’ll be guaranteed of a great connection.

4G/5G coverage is also strong basically anywhere near civilization.

Co-working spaces on Tenerife

There are ample co-working spaces on Tenerife. The official site of Tenerife Work & Play maintains a great list of them.

Working from cafes on Tenerife

If you love working from cafes, then you may find your options a bit limited on Tenerife. That doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker, of course, but you may find the type of cafes available may be a bit different from other nomad spots around the world.

There are mostly two types of cafes on the island. Either you have typical tascas that have metal tables, football on TV, and serve greasy tapas. Not great to work from. Or you have some rare few specialty coffee or pastry places, which are really more for having a trendy lunch than for plopping down your laptop for an extended time.

You may have some luck finding one or two laptop-friendly cafes in Santa Cruz or La Laguna, but it’s not (yet) a widespread phenomenon in the Canaries.

Makika&Co, my favorite cafe in La Laguna. Nice cafes can be a bit hard to find though!

Living on Tenerife

While it’s digital nomads that have put Tenerife on the map as a place to work from, the local government and partners are especially keen on promoting it as a longer-term remote work location. If you’re thinking of making Tenerife your base there is a lot of support available.

Since the Canaries are a special territory within Spain, they benefit from a favorable business environment. For example, if you base your company there, you could benefit from a very low 4% corporate tax rate (though this does require having several local employees). You can read more about this at WhyTenerife.

If you subscribe at Tenerife Work & Play, you’ll receive a welcome package with a lot of information and discounts for various co-working offices and activities.

It’s also highly worth following the Tenerife Remote Workers & Digital Nomads Facebook group. From there, you may also get invited to more specific Slack spaces or Whatsapp groups.

Tips on Choosing the Best Hotel in Tenerife

The island of Tenerife has a tourist potential beyond any doubt and every year that passes it offers something new to see and do. This also applies to hotels in Tenerife but not only to traditional establishments but also to vacation rentals, apartments, rural houses, camping areas and 5 star hotels in Tenerife. The island has a wide catalog that continues to increase.

Therefore, the most important thing is to decide which area of the island you want to use as a base of operations to visit Tenerife and then choose the type of accommodation. Shortly after you inform yourself, you will see that each area has a great variety and whether you travel with your family, friends, partner or alone you will find an option for everyone.

There’s a big difference between a weekend getaway to Tenerife whose objective is to enjoy luxury in a good hotel and a family trip in which you have to cover many more kilometers to entertain young and old alike.

While it is true that for the locals there are only 2 points on the island (north and south – due to its strong climatic contrast) here we will recommend hotels in Tenerife along the 4 cardinal points. In this way you will have all the information at hand before making the reservation and perhaps opt for a combination of accommodation in two different areas.

Accommodations in the north of Tenerife

Hotels in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is small and manageable. It is usually the area of the island preferred by national tourism. A place where locals mix with tourism. If you have read a little about the island, you will know that the “donkey’s belly” is usually present in the northern area, so depending on the time of the year you are staying you can enjoy more or less sunny days.

Hotels in Garachico

If you have chosen the north of Tenerife but prefer an area that is not touristic we believe that the municipality of Garachico is for you. It is very small but tremendously beautiful corner. Garachico is a small fishing town that once served as the most important commercial port on the island. It retains a well-kept and very charming historic center, a place with some restaurants and a small main square. The heart of Garachico is dotted with beautiful boutique hotels.

Hotels in Los Realejos

Another option in the north is the municipality Los Realejos. It is not a tourist city so you will not be surrounded by hotels. It is also true that it does not have the great charm of Garachico but it is worth assessing it as a place to spend your days in Tenerife. In addition to being a historical reference, it is also famous for surfing. El Socorro beach is one of the best places on the island of Tenerife to practice this sport.

Hotels in La Orotava

In the heart of the north of the island we find the town that gives its name to the Orotava Valley. Its historic center is one of those places on the island that you will undoubtedly have to visit.

Accommodations in the south of Tenerife

Hotels in Adeje and Guía de Isora

To visit the south of the island is to enter another dimension, in another world. Along its coast we find dozens of beaches but also countless hotels and of course apartments, villas, restaurants, pubs and everything related to sun and beach vacations. There is so much on offer that looking for accommodation can become a headache.

In the south you will find the best hotels in Tenerife, especially in the municipalities of Adeje and Guía de Isora as it is the most recently built area. The south gives the feeling of being anywhere else in the world but if you are looking for a good hotel and sun, you should keep an eye on one of the following hotels. One of the most popular hotels in the south of Tenerife is Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey.

Hotels in Arona and Granadilla de Abona

Arona and Granadilla are also located in the southern area of Tenerife, in fact, once there you will not distinguish if you are in Arona, Adeje or Guía de Isora. It is the south. The hotel zone. A continuous succession of beaches, small fishing villages and large hotel areas.

As you can see, in the south you can go crazy looking for a hotel because the offer is very wide and varied. It is important that you know that in Arona, in general, you will find somewhat cheaper hotels but most are not of recent construction.

Accommodations in the east of Tenerife

Hotels in La Laguna

If you are looking for something different on the island stay in this area. La Laguna is a World Heritage Site, colonial city and university and episcopal headquarters of Tenerife. In short, you have to visit the city!

The Lagoon is at the gates of Anaga so it is perfect if you are going hiking. Likewise, walking through its historic center and dining at any of its bars is a pleasure but yes, shelter is absolutely necessary.

Hotels in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is 10 minutes away by car from La Laguna. Little by little, the capital of the island is positioning itself as a tourist destination thanks to the push of cruise ships that arrive on the island mainly during the winter and spring months. Its offer of visits is not limited to the commercial but it also has beautiful parks, golden sand beaches, an imposing auditorium and a Maritime Park where you can cool off the hottest days of the year. This list of hotels in Tenerife is eminently business oriented.

Accommodations in the west of Tenerife

There is still more. Near the cliffs of Los Gigantes there is another tourist center: Santiago del Teide. Sun and beach area that can be encompassed in the south by its good weather.

Undoubtedly, the great interest of this area of the island is on earth, with the great cliffs of Los Gigantes, and in the sea, with the sighting of cetaceans that can be observed throughout the year as they live permanently between Tenerife and the island of La Gomera.

Accommodations in El Teide

Due to its remoteness from the rest of the island to sleep in El Teide you have to be clear about what you are going to do. Walk its best known trails and enjoy the peace, starry nights and the exclusivity of being in a place where few people sleep every night.

Not a bad plan for a romantic getaway. There are some hotels in Tenerife where you can open the window at dawn and see Mount Teide in front of you which is an indescribable experience like watching the sunset.

However, what many people don’t know is that the island has one of the most important water parks in the Canary Islands: Aqualand.

The Canary Islands are the ideal place for this type of theme park. You’ll be able to enjoy them at any time of the year thanks to the mild temperatures, especially in the winter months, and the many hours of sunshine a year that allow you to enjoy this water park 365 days a year.

In addition, it’s a great plan for the whole family. A water park offers activities for all ages; Children will be able to enjoy attractions where they’ll have a great time, while adults can experience pure adrenaline in addition to other services offered by the park.

In this post, we’re going to talk about Aqualand Maspalomas in Gran Canaria. This park has undergone some renovations in recent years, with the firm intention of renewing itself and continue to lead the top of the most important water parks in Spain.

In this text, we’ll provide you with all the information you need: how much the tickets for Aqualand Maspalomas cost, the opening hourshow to get there and which are the best attractions of the park.

Aqualand Maspalomas: How to get there, prices and opening times

Aqualand in Gran Canaria is located in the tourist epicentre of the island, Maspalomas. It’s one of the largest water parks in the Canary Islands and a reference point in Spain.

It has a large area of approximately 130,000 square metres, with 14 attractions for all ages and members of the family.

To get easily to the park by car, take the GC-1 and take the exit number 46 towards Parque Sur and then taking the road to Barranco de la Negra.

If, on the other hand, you don’t have your own vehicle and public transport is more convenient for you, here’s what you need to know. From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, you can take bus number 30 from San Telmo station, which will take you to Playa del Inglés. From there you can take bus number 45, and you’ll arrive at the waterpark in just 15 minutes.

The waterpark is open 365 days a year, but we must warn you that, with the COVID-19 measures, the park can have reduced capacity and even close depending on the levels of the island.

Opening hours are from 10:00 in the morning to 17:00 in the afternoon. The attractions will begin to close half an hour before the park closes.

Ticket prices at Aqualand in Gran Canaria vary between adults and children.

The one-day ticket for adults is 33 euros and for children 24 euros. The great novelty of the park is that it has family packspacks with entrance and food, and an annual pass to enter every day of the year.

The 5 best attractions at Aqualand Maspalomas

Now that you know more about Aqualand Maspalomas, where it’s located, its prices and opening hours, it’s time to talk about the attractions that the park has.

There are more than 14 attractions for all ages: for the more adventurous, for those who want strong emotions where adrenaline is the main protagonist, for those who want to spend a relaxing time and, of course, for the youngest members of the family.

We’re going to show you what, for us, are the 5 best attractions of Aqualand Maspalomas, with which you’ll enjoy all the excitement of a real water park.

1. Kamikaze

One of the most legendary attractions of the whole park. It has been there since its opening and is in very good conditions.

It’s an attraction at Aqualand in Gran Canaria, with two equal slides, placed in parallel, where you go at high speed and end up with a steep descent that’ll make you vibrate with excitement.

2. Mamut

An attraction for the whole family. The Mammoth (Mamut), as its name suggests, simulates the trunk of a mammoth and is the largest slide in the park.

To enjoy it, you have to get on a float, which holds a maximum of 8 people, making it an ideal attraction to enjoy with family or friends.

3. Boomerang

One of the park’s newest attractions. Only suitable for the most daring and for those looking for strong emotions.

You’ll be able to enjoy the Boomerang with another rider, so you won’t face the steepest and most vertiginous descent in the entire park alone.

4. Racer Twin Turbolance

This is the new star of Aqualand Maspalomas. Racer Twin Turbolance is one of the biggest tubes we can find in Europe.

It has a fastdynamic ride that’ll leave you breathless as you take every curve and slope of the attraction. When you’re done, you won’t want to do anything else but go on it again.

5. Río del Pirata

To end a day full of thrills and spills, what better way to relax than on the Pirate River (Río Pirata).

Enjoy a well-deserved rest at Aqualand in Gran Canaria, letting yourself be carried by the current, going along a long circuit with a pirate theme on top of a float in which up to 3 people can go.

Aqualand Maspalomas: the best water park in the Canary Islands

This is the end of our post in which we have introduced you to the most important water park in the Canary Islands after its extensive remodelling, making it an option to take into account among all the leisure activities that Gran Canaria has to offer.

If you’re thinking of spending your holidays here, don’t hesitate to invest a day in enjoying a day of leisure and relaxation with your family or friends at Aqualand in Gran Canaria.

Aqualand Maspolamas: photo and short description

If you had the opportunity (or perhaps desire) to visit all the Canary Islands, you would hardly find a water park larger and more popular than Maspalomas Aqualand. Everyone who comes to Gran Canaria for vacation seeks to visit it. And not a single person left here disappointed.

All kinds of slides, tubes and other water attractions are open for you almost all year round (except, of course, rainy days, which can be counted here on the fingers). You can slide the whole family down a wide water slide on a four-seat raft, or you can experience an indescribable feeling by sliding down the gutter. Feel at the mercy of “Tornado” – a pipe with many turns, which will lead you at the end into a huge funnel. Or feel in the role of an athlete-rafter rafting down a mountain river (attraction “Rapids” – “Stremnina”). Younger children will certainly be delighted with the Polynesia attraction – small water slides are safe, and the periodically overturning bucket of water creates the feeling that they have fallen under a breathtaking waterfall.

And having visited all these delightful slides and tubes, you can enjoy drifting on a rubber ring along a slow river, cruising along local beaches with sun loungers. Each of the thirteen attractions, which are located on an area of 90 thousand square meters, is attractive in its own way, it is interesting to ride on each. However, this is not all that awaits you in Aqualand: in addition to riding the water slides, you can enjoy playing mini-golf or billiards, darts or table tennis. And in the photo lab they will help you save all these wonderful memories and download (or – if necessary – digitize) your photos on a CD. The owners and staff made sure that visitors to Aqualand did not have any problems: there is free parking, if necessary, you will be offered medical assistance, cafes, restaurants and stalls with ice cream and drinks are distributed throughout the water park. And, of course, what is a water park without a gift shop? In it you can buy not only something for memory, but also buy various necessary accessories – for example, bathing suits, glasses, towels.

So you want to feel like a carefree child again? And, of course, you certainly want to deliver just a sea of pleasure to your children? Why are you delaying? Aqualand is waiting for you!

How to get there

Getting to Maspalomas Aqualand is easy: there is a bus from each Maspalomas beach towards the water park, the journey will not take you much time – 10-20 minutes.

Time and cost of visiting

The water park is open from June to August from 10.00 to 18.00, from September to June – from 10.00 to 17.00.

The cost of an adult ticket is 28 euros, for children 5-12 years old – 19 euros, for children 3-4 years old – 10 euros. A 2+2 family ticket costs 90 euros.

If you decide to visit the water park two days in a row, it will be more profitable to take a two-day ticket. And follow the ongoing promotions on the official website. Prices are sometimes lower than usual, especially off-peak season.

Abundant rains and more snow this week in the Canary Islands –

1/9/23, 8:26 AM

By Canarian Weekly

National

The Canary Islands have said goodbye to the Christmas, New Year, and Kings Day holidays with very stable weather of clear skies, light winds and high temperatures for the time of year. But this type of weather, more typical of spring, is to be marred this week by rain on almost all the islands, and more snow on the top of Teide, according to the forecast produced by the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts).

According to their forecast, today (Monday January 9th) the stable weather will continue during the first half of the day, but some clouds will begin to appear in the eastern part of the Archipelago, in the north of Lanzarote this afternoon. With northeasterly winds, there is a strong probability of light rain in the east of Tenerife and the north of Gran Canaria later in the day.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, precipitation in the east and northeast of Tenerife, east of La Palma, and south of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote is expected. These precipitations, late in the day, and early on Wednesday, may also be in the form of snow at the top of Teide, according to the same prediction model.

As the morning progresses, the rain will be more persistent on La Palma, especially on its northern and eastern slopes, where accumulated amounts of 10 millimetres of water per square metre are expected in six hours; and with less intensity, in the northeast of Tenerife and its metropolitan area, in Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura.

During Wednesday afternoon, the accumulated rainfall will be higher in the centre and west of Tenerife, the centre and west of Gran Canaria (in both cases with more than 10mm/m2 in six hours), and slightly less in the northeast of La Palma. Later in the day, rainfall will also reach La Gomera and El Hierro.

By Thursday morning, the ECMWF says it will continue to rain in Gran Canaria, the east of La Palman and in the north of Lanzarote, but in less quantity. In the afternoon, the highest accumulations will occur in the north of Gran Canaria and in the northeast of La Palma, the latter once again exceeding 10mm/m2 in six hours. Rains are also expected in the metropolitan area and northeast of Tenerife (Anaga).

The heaviest rains this week will be on Friday the 13th.

Friday
will begin with significant rainfall in the north of Gran Canaria, of more than 30mm/m2 in six hours, and in Tenerife with more than 10mm in the metropolitan area, eastern and northern slopes of the island, especially in inland areas.

Similar rain will also be seen in La Palma, especially in the north of the island, but these rains will move towards the west, meaning the greatest amount of water will pass from Gran Canaria to Tenerife, and then to La Palma, on Friday evening and during the night.

This means the largest accumulated rainfall will occur in Tenerife on Friday night and Saturday morning, again on its eastern and northern slopes, and the metropolitan area. The rain will also affect La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria in the early hours of the day, while no rain is expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on Saturday.

During the afternoon, according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the wind will move the cloud and rains towards the Atlantic, away from the islands leaving clearer weather behind.

Notes of the Astrakhan naturalist. About winter feeding of birds

POINT-A
https://punkt-a. info/news/glavnoe/zapiski-astrakhanskogo-naturalista-o-zimney-podkormke-ptits

Heading leader – Vladimir Pankov

The calendar winter will soon pass through the middle, but due to the peculiarities of our region, there has been neither frost nor stable snow cover yet. This does not mean that the weather will continue to be as mild, it is in the second half of January in Astrakhan that the temperature usually drops below zero, snow falls and does not melt – which means that the time has come when the birds will really need to be fed. nine0006

The great tit is the most frequent guest at the feeder

In more northern regions, feeders with seeds are hung out in late autumn, in the Astrakhan region, due to warm weather, this is not necessary. Moreover, excessive feeding, according to many ornithologists, is rather harmful for birds. Until the snow covered everything around with a thick cover, tits, sparrows and other birds can find their own food on their own, and more balanced than what people can offer them. Even in December, birds can find insects, plant seeds, and there is more than enough food waste in numerous open trash bins and unauthorized dumps. nine0003

But January and February, even in our southern region, are still more like a traditional winter, so it’s time to think about helping the birds – especially since this is a great opportunity to get to know nature better. Many wildlife photographers got their start with chickadees on feeders.

By the way, the feeder itself can be quite simple, it can be built from any plastic bottle, the main thing is that there are no too sharp edges that birds can get hurt on. And it is better to tie the future dining table for birds higher, otherwise there will be more cats around it than titmouses. In general, more than enough feeders are now hung in Astrakhan, but they almost always remain empty – events were held in schools and kindergartens to help birds, they put a “tick”, but they safely forgot that the feeders should not only be hung up, but also filled . nine0003

Smaller and more cautious blue tits

The main food that suits almost all birds found near humans is sunflower seeds, which must be raw and unsalted. Everything fried and salty for birds is poison.

Birds also eat raw peanuts with pleasure, but I almost never saw them in feeders in our region, this is more typical for Moscow and the Moscow region.

Many have heard that tits can be fed with lard, also raw and unsalted, but in practice the birds do not begin to peck at it immediately, they need time to get used to the unusual food. Rather, lard will be eaten by crows or rooks, which do not need to be fed at all, there are already a lot of them. nine0003

As for bread crumbs, millet and other types of cereals, this is not the most suitable food. Rye bread for birds is completely dangerous. In addition, the bread quickly becomes covered with mold, which, again, is dangerous for birds. In general, it is better to stop at seeds and peanuts.

Common greenfinch, or forest canary

Sparrows and great tits usually appear first on the feeders, and their behavior is completely different – tits carefully grab one seed at a time and take it with them to peel somewhere on the branches of trees and eat, while sparrows climb inside the feeder and eat right on the spot – until one of the competitors kicks them out. nine0003

Also on the feeders in Astrakhan in cold weather you can meet smaller blue tit tits, they are even more cautious. Yes, and the peel of seeds for blue tit is a whole problem, it is difficult for them to get to the grain, and often they have to pick up the leftovers of food from larger birds.

House sparrow

Sometimes large spotted woodpeckers fly to the feeders, which are quite common even in the city. But they resort to feeding quite rarely, they prefer to find various insects under the bark of trees. nine0003

Also an ordinary sparrow, but black – because it spent the night in the chimney and got smeared with soot

A rather rare guest at the feeders – greenfinches, or forest canaries. It is a bird about the size of a sparrow, but with rather beautiful golden green plumage, especially in males. On the feeders greenfinches usually appear in pairs, their behavior is almost like that of sparrows – they also brazenly strive to climb inside the feeder and eat right on the spot. Greenfinches do not hesitate to drive away competitors. nine0003

Finches also appear near the feeders, but they are rather attracted by the general turmoil of birds, they eat sunflower seeds quite rarely. There are plenty of maples and ash trees in the city, the seeds of which feed on finches.

In winter, great spotted woodpeckers can get larvae from reed trunks

Spring may well begin in our region in the second half of February – the snow will melt under the ever warmer rays of the sun, and the birds will not need people’s help. It is not necessary to continue feeding in warm weather, let the birds return to independent foraging and a more balanced diet. nine0003

So seize the moment to communicate with titmouse, believe me, if you look closely at them, they are very beautiful. Yes, and ordinary house sparrows are quite an interesting object to observe.

PSG fell down, Golovin drags Monaco into the top 3. January is accompanied by changes in Ligue 1 01/03/2023 read the blog on SOCCER.RU

The Parisians are not such an undisputed leader.

One of the championships with a stable champion is the French Ligue 1. Paris Saint-Germain is again in the lead after 17 rounds, and it is difficult to count other intrigues. There are few interesting events, but they still exist. nine0003

First error

PSG

Wards of Christophe Galtier were defeated at the most inconvenient moment possible for the hegemon of the national championship. The misfire occurred in the game of the 17th round of the championship against Lance, the second team in the standings.

The Blood Golds, who recently played in Ligue 2, are having their best season in over 20 years. Lens approached the meeting with the Parisians 7 points behind the leader. Due to the fact that under Galtier PSG is moving away from its main weakness – foppishness – it seemed that at the end of the match the lead would grow to 10 points.

But there were also arguments in favor of an outsider. The French giants are forced to do without the two main leaders of the attack: Lionel Messi and Neymar. The first moves away from the celebration of victory at the 2022 World Cup – he returned to the location of Paris Saint-Germain only today and will play in the 18th round. The second managed to play against Strasbourg, gave an assist, but received a red card. And in connection with the death of the Brazilian legend Pele, the forward of the Pentacampeons flew home in a hurry. From the explosive trio, only Mbappe remained. nine0003

Kilian opened someone else’s penalty area in tandem with Hugo Ekitike, however, for the first time since November he went to the locker room with zero goals in Ligue 1.

This was enough for Lens to win a landslide 3-1. Now the “blood-gold” are four points away from the Parisians – this, of course, is unlikely to revive the intrigue in the championship globally. But the fact remains – this is the first defeat of the French giant of the season in all tournaments. For at least a few rounds, players PSG will definitely look at the table. nine0003

Marseille is behind the title race

Although in Ligue 1, the Provencals are confident. Combining with European competitions is not so easy for the team – playing on two fronts led to the fact that in October Igor Tudor’s wards had a series of five matches without victories. In Champions League Marseille was able to beat only Sporting and was left without the Eurospring. But after the relegation, the “white-blue” scored 12 points in four meetings.

The autumn decline turned into a strong lag behind the more stable Lens and Paris Saint-Germain. Now the struggle between the representatives of the top 3 will take place in a correspondence format – both the Parisians and the “blood-gold” Marseille lost, the next face-to-face match will be on February 26 – against PSG .

Meanwhile, Rennes and Monaco are already breathing in the back – both teams are now in excellent shape, giving them a chance to get into the top 3 is not worth it.

Golovin woke up and pulls Monaco up

Periodically, the Russian midfielder gives out a series of matches in which he scores points and brings victories to the Monegasques. Progress in performance was achieved primarily due to a change in position – Niko Kovacs also put the 26-year-old Russian on the left flank, and now Philippe Clement uses the same way. nine0003

This season, the scoring streak has already stretched to 5 games of the French championship. Alexander scored against Angers, Toulouse, then assisted Marseille and Auxerre in goals, and recently scored the only goal in the match against Brest from outside the box. Long-range strikes as a strong feature of Golovin are also noted by the mentor:

I am also pleased with his performance. He’s already tried that kind of shot this season and he’s got what it takes to score goals like that. I hope he chalks up a lot of those goals because he has all the right qualities to do it! nine0003

Monaco has started a successful wave, with which it keeps in the European Cup zone. After a terrible start, the Monegasques suffered one loss in eight games between September and October, helping them climb from 16th to fifth place. Now the situation is similar: for 7 meetings – one defeat: from Marseille.

Lorient and Lille claim the place of Monaco – both of them are enough to overtake or equal the Monegasques in terms of points. The sharpness of the confrontation is added by the fact that the wards of Philippe Clement will meet with Lorient in the next round. nine0003

The “red-whites” themselves are guarding the error of “Marseille” or “Rennes” in order to jump higher. You may be lucky in the 19th round – then Rennes will have to play with PSG . Although this opportunity still needs to be used.

Longtime residents of League 1 fight for survival

Angers did not have enough stars from the sky, but it has been holding on in the elite division of the French championship since the 2015/16 campaign. Strasbourg has been playing at the highest level since 2017, finishing sixth in the previous league. Nantes has been in Ligue 1 for almost 10 years. And all of them are now forced to fight not to be relegated to the second division. nine0003

The Canaries were unable to keep their main asset and did not even receive anything for it – Randal Kolo moved to Eintracht as a free agent. At the moment, Nantes is in 15th place, however, the gap from the relegation zone is only 2 points.

Strasbourg, which flared up a year earlier, has now simply returned to its usual positions, but even for a team from Alsace, the penultimate place in the championship is too much. There are no bright leaders in the team.

Angers have to put up with the fact that the backbone players left the team last summer – Mohamed-Ali Cho was France’s main young talent, but now plays for Real Sociedad. Angelo Fulgini ended up at Mainz, Enzo Ebossa at Udinese. The result of such an indulgence is the last line of the national championship. And even in such conditions, the club wants to have time to sell the remaining assets, one of them is the Moroccan Azzedine Unahi.

Inside all of us, there are two wolves. One who wants to brave harsh winters with the steadfastness of a hardy Minnesotan, and another who couldn’t give a shit about things like “steadfastness” and would much rather spend winter on a white sand beach in a place like Florida or Puerto Rico, eating fish tacos and sipping drinks garnished with a tiny pink umbrella while top 40s hits play in the backdrop. Today, we choose to feed the second wolf. These warm weather vacations—some a quick flight away, some worthy of a longer trip—will keep your spirits high and your travel itinerary full this winter.

Martin Wheeler III/Shutterstock

A trip to Puerto Rico means a 3-for-1 bargain of Caribbean beaches, tropical rainforests, and splendid mountainscapes. While we’re big fans of venturing beyond the island’s capital city—where a heap of wonders await, from bioluminescent bays to damn good street food—when the weather gets cold, nothing quite beats the attractions that make San Juan so special. Not to mention that flights here are often relatively cheap. Stroll through Old San Juan and past the fortresses at Castillo San Cristobal and San Felipe del Morro; check out the beaches at Culebra, a short boat ride away; or take a sail around the island or snorkel off the coast, where the water is clear and the marine life just as brilliant and tropical as ever.

Experience Scottsdale

Scottsdale, Arizona

While most of the US is covered in snow or cloud cover during the winter months, it’s the opposite for the “world’s most Western town” where it’s sunny and 75 just about every day. Around this time of year, Arizonans and visitors alike can enjoy what makes Scottsdale great—resort-hopping, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, strolling hits like Old Town and the Desert Botanical Garden—all without the risk of overheating in the desert heat. Plus, Scottsdale boasts all the luxury of big cities like Los Angeles and New York City with designer shopping malls, high-end restaurants like Fat Ox, and scores of wintertime food festivals, music festivals, and art shows.

The Florida Keys are popular for a reason. | Simon Dannhauer/Shutterstock

Sombrero Beach, Florida

They may be an oldie, but the Florida Keys—with its scuba diving and party spots—are a goodie. (As are the weird, wonderful bars that line the coast on your way down.) Those familiar with beaches in this part of the world know the Keys can sometimes be lacking in tropical sandy waterfront. But those REALLY familiar know about Sombrero Beach, near Marathon at Mile Marker 50 on the Overseas Highway. The beach is often deserted during slow seasons, with nothing but you, the white sand, and the mangroves and palm trees aside the turquoise water of the Atlantic. The beach winds on for a bit, and if you’re keen on spending the day there, you can see the sunrise from one side, then stroll to a rock formation down the beach for one of the best sunsets in the Keys at night.

In the winter, Memphis offers all the revelry with half the sweat. | Tetra Images/Getty Images

Although Memphis in winter isn’t necessarily “warm,” we’d argue that this still makes a great escape for those who want a high-energy city break with way milder temps than, say, those you’d find in New York or Chicago. One of the great Memphian experiences one can have is strolling down Beale Street on a brisk night and being beckoned inside by a driving blues beat and smoky barbecue. The Delta gets shirt-soaking hot during the summer, making this the finest time of year to experience one of the best music and food cities in America. Tourists aren’t packing the bars, and you can chat with the guy next to you about Memphis, a topic every local loves to discuss until the bartender kicks you out.

Lively, colorful, relaxing Barbados has gotten many a shoutout lately, both thanks to their recent removal of Queen Elizabeth II from her Head of State position (rightly deserved) and due to the fact that they named Rihanna a national hero (also rightly deserved). Here, tourists and locals alike jam the port city, and the smell of fresh seafood and soca music fills the air. It’s a perfect beginning to a night out in Barbados—which absolutely needs to include a trip on the Reggae Bus, an island equivalent to the late-night dorm shuttles you remember from college. They’ll only run you a dollar.

Though the country has produced some renowned chefs, the food here isn’t unapproachable. Sure, you can go high-end for dinner at The Cliff, a fine-dining joint that looks straight out of a Bond film, but you can find just as great a meal from Cuz’s Fish Shack on the beach or Friday nights at Oistins. When you’re not eating, Barbados also has the best surfing in the Caribbean outside of Haiti, and the region’s best circuit racing course at Bushy Park. You can sample rum at Mount Gay, the oldest active rum distillery in the world. Or just lounge at Bathsheba or Bottom Bay, the idyllic picture of relaxing Caribbean beaches.

Tucked away on the southern edge of Guadalajara—one of Mexico’s largest cities—you’ll find a charming community called Tlaquepaque. A bustling residential district, the primary draw is the area’s historic Centro region, which offers an array of delights for the artistically- or food-inclined. An absolute must-see for art lovers is the Galeria Sergio Bustamante, a gallery owned by the renowned Mexican surrealist that becomes increasingly whimsical and magical the further you explore it. Right next door, you’ll find Galeria Ramiro Medina, a sprawling complex where a variety of local artists and crafters offer their wares. Stroll along Calle Independencia to browse the stalls of handicraft vendors, and take a seat at El Parian for some delicious eats and mariachi performances, the state of Jalisco being the country’s capital of mariachi. There are plenty of quality Airbnbs in the area, or you can stay at the beautifully hip La Villa del Ensueno. —Nick Hilden

Unlike Britain itself, the British Virgin Islands is a sunny, warm paradise not just in winter, but year-round. The islands closely resemble Seychelles, with its coasts lined by giant, sea-worn boulders, its crystal blue waters, and its sand as white as snow—but unlike the far-flung gem of the Indian Ocean, these golden isles only take a few hours’ flight to reach from the mainland US. Hit The Baths in Virgin Gorda to explore the turquoise pools that lie between the park’s iconic towering granite megaliths; sail, snorkel, and stroll in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola; or explore 300+ shipwrecks on Anegada. Oh—and while you’re at it, stay for a night at the Saba Rock Resort, founded by a real-life pirate of the Caribbean.

Mardi gras or no, New Orleans comes alive in the winter. | GTS Productions/Shutterstock.com

True, there’s not a whole lot underrated about going to the Big Easy for Mardi Gras in February. However, visiting New Orleans in the non-Mardi Gras winter season is a different kind of fantastic: you can take in the culture, architecture, and culinary delights of the city with mild temps and minimal crowds. January brings with it the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane, and from Ash Wednesday til Easter, you’ll get to experience the almost oxymoronic sensation of prowling this sensual city during Lent, a period of relative detox among New Orleanians. This is a fine time to go if you don’t need to turn the volume up to 11…or if the idea of big crowds still makes you a little uneasy.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Baja California Sur

The stunning, lesser-known seaside city of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, is a mixture of stark desert plains and sparkling seas. Check into the beautiful new boutique Baja Club Hotel located on the Malecón (or for something a little more rustic, try glamping at Rancho Cacachilas) before heading down to the unspoiled Balandra Beach; considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, development is forbidden here, meaning there are no buildings for miles here—only pristine white sand and turquoise water. Winter is the season for whale watching on the shores of the Baja Peninsula, the shallow lagoons off the coast of La Paz making the perfect pitstop for gray whales migrating to birth and nurse their calves. Scope out the seas before diving straight into them to swim with whale sharks or to try kite surfing with Evolution Kiteboarding in La Ventana, about 40 minutes south. —Dana Freeman

Discover Grenada

The island of Grenada—where the smell of nutmeg follows the breeze everywhere—spans just 21 by 12 miles, but there are weeks’ worth of experiences to be had: jungle hikes, loafing on silky-sand beaches, roaming past waterfalls, digging into spiced fish for breakfast, dancing to live calypso bands and upbeat soca music. You’ll enjoy the latter after a few rounds of $2 beers, which you’ll order barefoot on a sand-floored bar. Following the smell of barbecue or the call of steel drums will lead you to a buzzing outdoor marketplace near Grand Anse Beach (baptized as “Wall Street” because it’s bookended by banks). At night, vehicles blast music and peddle beverages out of ice chests in pickup beds, starting street parties where locals mingle, dance, and snack on grilled meat. Don’t leave without tasting the hometown dish, oil down, a one-pot stew of breadfruit, cabbage, callaloo, dumplings, fish, okra, and turmeric stewed in coconut milk. —Bruce Northam

You might just get Sifnos, Greece, all to yourself. | Tom Zeman/Shutterstock

Cyclades, Greece

We should start by saying that wintertime trips here aren’t for everyone—you’ll find a lot of restaurants and hotels closed for the season. But if you’re looking for a quiet, lonely stretch of beach, a fishing town where you’ll find lots of fresh octopus and zero TVs, a small but breezy white-walled hotel where you’ll wake to the sound of a donkey braying, then head to the Cyclades in the cold months. Hop on a ferry and begin on Kythnos, where you’ll spend a few days before moving along to island-hop between Kea, Serifos, Sifnos… you decide. You do have to do a tiny bit of planning in advance though—meaning, be sure to call ahead to the places you want to stay to make sure you’ll find a hotel that’s open. Some towns may be more or less closed, but you’ll find something the next town over. Or, at the very least, the next island over.

Belize: a country that is so different from most of the US (turquoise waters, private islands for rent!) and yet so similar (same language, same currency!) that we can’t help but fall in love again and again. Although this Central American nation is just a tad bigger than New Jersey, it packs in a whole lot of adventure…and, frankly, much better beaches. You’ll find dense rainforests replete with more than 600 ancient Mayan ruins, as well as with eco-friendly lodges like Sweet Songs and Copal Tree, where the sounds of the jungle will soothe you to sleep each night. Meanwhile, the 406-foot deep, 1,000-foot-wide Great Blue Hole and the Belize Barrier Reef—the world’s second-largest living coral reef—are both meccas for scuba divers. On sea, you’ll be surrounded by over 450 isles and more than 70 types of coral; on land, you can spot everything from howler monkeys to collared aracari. And still, none of it can beat the people-watching that you’ll get during a night out on Ambergris Caye.

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

Skip Cancún, Cabo, and Tulum in favor of Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Whether you’re at a resort in Punta de Mita, a bohemian surf town like Sayulita and San Pancho, or a laid-back village like Lo de Marcos or Chacala, the 200-mile stretch of beachy coastline really has everything you need for a winter escape. The weather is blissful, with almost no rain until June (somehow, tropical trees grow and vibrant flowers blossom without it). The seafood is so damn fresh—whether you’re tossing back a $1 ceviche tostada or cilantro cream shrimp risotto at a snazzier place like Barracuda. And the wifi is good enough for working remotely. If you need further convincing, take heed from the area’s largest winter residents: humpback whales, who spend the winter off the coast of Islas Marietas, Mexico’s rival to the Galápagos Islands. —Joel Balsam

In winter, you can have a great rest in countries where it is warm all year round, the sun shines brightly, and the generous ocean or sea gives bliss and pleasure. Excursions to historical and cultural monuments in many southern countries are more comfortable in winter. Those who love active recreation will like ski resorts.

Where to go on vacation in winter? Trips to Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand or the Philippines provide an opportunity to plunge into summer in winter. A ski resort in Austria is waiting for fans of winter holidays, and New Year’s Eve Denmark will bring the magic of a winter holiday. nine0005

      Egypt

Where is the cheapest place to go in winter? Budget holidays from winter in a warm climate are offered by the resorts of Egypt, Turkey and the Philippines.

In Egypt, winter is not the season, so the rest is cheaper. This time is the best for those who do not tolerate heat well. In Egyptian resorts, as the traveler and writer Jess Lee notes, it is almost always sunny, the comfortable winter temperature is +25 °С, the sea warms up to +21 °С. On the coast in the winter months it is often windy, coolness falls early. Therefore, it is better to look for hotels with beaches in closed or coral bays, near which the sea is warmer. nine0005

Swimming pools, water parks with heated water will help you not to notice the winter. Service in Egyptian resorts does not depend on the season.

      Turkey

The famous service of Turkish resorts beckons all year round. In winter, on the Mediterranean coast, boat trips and a trip along the Bosphorus are especially attractive. In the winter months, there is no exhausting heat here, so tourists willingly go on excursions to ancient Istanbul and natural parks. nine0005

Hotels give you the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the sea in swimming pools and water parks, plunge into the bliss of Turkish hammams and spas. In the interior of the country there are ski resorts with trails for beginners. Moreover, prices at this time are more affordable than on European routes.

      Philippines

The Philippine Islands are not the most massive tourism destination, so the prices here are democratic. Of the thousands of islands, you can choose to relax to your taste – with beaches, mountain resorts, waterfalls or caves. There is an opportunity to visit all these natural attractions, because ferries, boats, sailboats run between the islands. nine0005

Winter in the Philippine Islands is the height of the holiday season, because in the summer it begins the rainy season and tropical humidity. The sun at this time is moderate, spring, but the air temperature does not fall below +30 °C. Humidity during the winter months is quite acceptable for tourists.

The islands are a paradise for diving enthusiasts. This is the most popular entertainment, each resort has its own diving center.

      Thailand

      Indonesia

Indonesia is an alluring winter getaway. Impeccable beaches, warm sea, temperature mostly +31 °C are the most comfortable conditions for those who do not like when it is very hot. Tropical rains happen, but mostly at night, in the morning they give coolness.

At this time, there is an endless choice of entertainment. Excursions to the capital Jakarta, national museums, natural parks are very popular. Holidays in Indonesia are famous for surfing. For several classes at schools, instructors “put on the board” any tourist. nine0005 Surfing in Indonesia: Depositphotos

      Denmark

Where to go in Europe in winter? In the cities of Denmark in December, tourists will plunge into a fabulous New Year’s Eve expectation, and the ski slopes of Austria beckon lovers of active winter recreation.

The ancient city of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, becomes incredibly beautiful and attractive for tourists in winter. Its streets are buried in the lights of festive garlands, giving a feeling of Christmas magic. Winter fairs attract tourists with Christmas discounts. nine0005

There are ski resorts in Denmark that attract lower prices than other famous places. After an active holiday on the slopes or ice fishing, the hotels offer relaxing spa treatments.

Winter vacation in Denmark is also an opportunity to visit ancient castles, temples, museums, stroll through old parks.

      Austria

The ski resort in Saalbach is popular in Austria. The best ski schools are open here for beginners. Ski tourism requires special safety, as Ekaterina Khokhlova recalls in the article. You should familiarize yourself with the rules of skiing, driving on a plateau or in a canyon in advance, learn how to protect yourself from hypothermia. nine0005

For sportsmen and amateurs, there is a wide choice of tracks – skiing and skiing, of different lengths and steepness. Experienced skiers can try their hand at the giant slalom course. Most of the slopes are connected by lifts into a single network. You can climb the mountain by high-speed elevators or cable lifts, which are equipped with heated seats and are protected from bad weather.

In Saalbach, numerous snow parks are open for beginner skiers, there are parks for freeride – snowboarding. There are separate trails for sledding. Such places are adapted for skiing in the evening and at night. nine0005 Ski slopes in Saalbach: Pixabay

Winter holidays are no less attractive than summer ones. This is an opportunity to plunge into the warmth of summer or feel the winter to the fullest and spend an enchanting vacation or weekend in the cold season.

Holidays on the Black Sea in the Mediterranean climate

      • 8 (988) 509-13-77
        nine0008

      Order a call

Russia, Krasnodar Territory, Novorossiysk, Wide beam tract (15 km from Novorossiysk)

The unique ecology of juniper forests,
sea, sun, delicious air and clean sea

The term “Mediterranean climate” is understood in different ways. But in the minds of most people, this is something slightly exotic, fresh, pleasant. Yes, and so that the sea is blue, and a cocktail with a straw. True, it is somewhere far away, where it takes a long time to fly and where it is expensive to rest. Let’s see why this type of climate is so loved by our compatriots and whether it can be found closer, preferably without crossing borders. nine0005

The main features of the Mediterranean climate

The Mediterranean Sea is large, the coast is thousands of kilometers long. And, of course, the climate around its perimeter is different. In our country, the Mediterranean climate is considered to be the climate of the south of Europe with its resorts on the Cote d’Azur. It differs:

      • predominant precipitation in winter and rather dry summer;
      • a large number of sunny days during the warm season;
      • average summer temperature, ideal for a beach holiday; nine0008
      • comfortable sea temperature;
      • cool nights on the coast.

Plants with a high content of essential oils grow well in such a climate, so the air in such areas is not only fresh, but also fragrant.

Why everyone wants to go to the Mediterranean

These are more dry subtropics than anything else. But it is precisely for these places that our tourists are so valued, especially from the northern regions. After all, there are much more cloudy days, a much lower average annual temperature. Summer is often with rains and mosquitoes – in general, you won’t relax much. That is why it pulls you into dry spicy heat, to rest by the sea. And pleasant, and exciting, and good for health. It is especially good to be in such an atmosphere for children and everyone who is prone to colds. nine0005

Rest in the Krasnodar Territory in Shirokaya Balka

Yes, surprisingly, in Russia you can find this type of climate. Wide beam is a unique place in its location and wind rose. Here, all the features of the Mediterranean weather are fully manifested due to the fact that it is surrounded by mountains, and one side goes to the sea. So in this space, as between large palms, a wonderful landscape is created with the freshest mountain-forest air. The proximity of the sea does not allow the air to overheat.

Canaries: Go island hopping in the warm islands

For those seeking winter warmth without jet lag, the Canary Islands are the place to go.

Seven volcanic islands tossed off the northwest coast of Africa, the Canary archipelago boasts miles of beaches, a backdrop of rugged mountains and a summertime climate year-round. The islands, actually part of Spain, lie in the same time zone as London, just a five-hour flight from mainland Europe. Best of all, they offer some of the cheapest eating and sleeping in Europe.

The seven major Canary Islands — Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote Fuerteventura, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro — are relatively close together, but the differences between them are stark.

The magnificent seven

In the west, Palma has been dubbed the “pretty island” for its lush, green forests, exotic flowers and dramatic mountains. On the other side of the archipelago, Fuerteventura is Sahara-like in its desertscapes and rolling sand dunes. In between are the cliffs of La Gomera, the busy resorts of Tenerife and the cosmopolitan capital city of Gran Canaria.

The landscapes of each island are as distinct as the lifestyles of its residents, and trying to sum up the archipelago in a simple phrase is as difficult as trying to visit all seven islands in a single trip.

Though the islands themselves vary tremendously, Canary culture is similar from one to another. With up to 600 miles of ocean between the islands and the Iberian peninsula, Canarios have a proud regional identity and see a marked distinction between themselves and mainland Spaniards.

In some ways, islanders have more in common with South America than with Spain; in the mid-20th century, many Canarios were forced to immigrate across the Atlantic, and today’s Canary culture has been heavily influenced by South America in its food, music and Spanish accents.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria

When the tourist boom hit the Canaries in the 1960s, they quickly gained a reputation as a playground for sun-starved northern Europeans. No islands deserve the label more than Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Home to the largest hotels, the hottest nightlife, and the greatest number of foreign-food restaurants per capita, these two islands receive the bulk of the Canaries’ visitors.

The largest island, Tenerife, is also the highest; the peak of El Teide rises to 12,270 feet, the tallest mountain in Spain. Tenerife is a land of contrasts, known as much for its discos and long nights as for adventure sports like hiking, scuba diving and mountain biking.

Though its capital, Santa Cruz, is in the far east, most people head down south, where the mammoth resort area of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas tempts with cheap package holidays and non-stop activity. The golden beaches are made with sand imported from the Sahara, but no one seems to mind.

Tenerife’s northern coast is not quite as warm, but the atmosphere there is much less frenzied than in the south. Beach resorts such as Puerto de la Cruz sit near pretty colonial towns like La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos and La Laguna. It’s there, in Tenerife’s inland towns, where you’ll see the real character and culture of the island.

Gran Canaria, a perfectly round island lying directly to the east of Tenerife, draws a large number of sun-loving visitors, too. Known as a continent in miniature for its varied terrain, Gran Canaria has both golden beaches and a striking, hilly interior.

The Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas area has some of the island’s most popular beaches and a backdrop of impressive sand dunes. This is the island’s major tourist center, so it’s no surprise that it’s also a hot spot for nightlife. Gay and straight clubs get full at around midnight and stay hopping until morning. The scene is intense, with strip clubs and drag shows, so leave the kiddies at home.

Days are spent recuperating on the beaches, or touring the island’s interior. It’s a paradise for bikers and walkers, especially in the island’s arid center, where you can enjoy the majestic mountain ridges in relative solitude.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote

These two islands beyond Gran Canaria are known for their golden beaches, too. Both offer world-class surfing and windsurfing, and many people are drawn to them for the watersports.

Smaller and a bit calmer than the larger islands, the east is a largely dry, sandy area. Though not pretty in a traditional sense, the landscape is impressive for its stark bareness. Fuerteventura is dominated by sand dunes, while Lanzarote is known for its unusual volcanic landscape.

In Lanzarote’s Montañas de Fuego (Mountains of Fire), boiling magma lies near the Earth’s surface, heating the land so that the pebbles lying about are almost too hot to touch.

La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro

In the far west of the archipelago lie three small islands. These are the three quietest islands, perfectly suited to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, though resort towns are starting to pop up, too.

La Gomera, which is just a 45-minute ferry ride from Tenerife, is crowned with a lush laurel forest in its center, and there are beautiful hikes that wind through it.

The island itself is rocky and scored with gorges, but it also offers beautiful green valleys full of vineyards, palm trees and banana plantations. The most popular area is Valle Gran Rey, a lush valley that pours into the ocean.

La Palma, farther west, has beautiful black, volcanic beaches on its western coast and an imposing mountain range running down its center. In the south, volcanoes attract most of the attention; the last eruption here was in 1971, and you can walk up to the some of the volcanoes’ craters.

The island is also known as one of the world’s best places for stargazing, and Europe’s largest astronomical observatory, El Roque de los Muchachos, sits at the island’s peak.

El Hierro is the westernmost island, the last speck of land before the coast of America. This was once the end of the known world, and even today it feels remote. There is little tourism here, and locals are stoic and hardworking.

Go to El Hierro to escape the stress of daily life; there is little to do there except walk, fish, swim or scuba dive (it’s one of Spain’s best areas for scuba diving).

Why choose?

If you can’t pick just one island to visit, island hopping is easy. Most flights from mainland Europe land at the airports in Gran Canaria (called the Aeropuerto de Gando) or Tenerife (Tenerife Norte or Tenerife Sur), though all islands have airports from which island-to-island flights come and go.

While flying is convenient, it’s usually cheaper to catch one of the ferries, which sail regularly between island ports. The connections between Tenerife and Gran Canaria are good, as are those between Tenerife and the western islands.

If you go

Getting there

Several airlines fly to the islands from most European countries, and the Internet is loaded with sites claiming to have the best deals. Look also at travel companies for fly-and-hotel packages. They often offer good packages, although they may be a little restrictive in your choices.

Getting around

For information about regional flight times and prices, check out www. bintercanarias.es, the Canary Islands’ airline. For information about inter-island ferries, learn about ferry operators Fred Olsen on the Web at www.fredolsen.es or Trasmediterranea at www.trasmediterranea.com.

Where to stay

There is no shortage of rooms in the Canaries, but finding the right one at the right resort can be tricky, especially in mid-winter or around holidays. The nationally run Parador hotels (www.parador.es) are dotted around the islands and are always a sure bet. Other favorites are:

• Hotel Marquesa: (www.hotelmarquesa.com) in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife;• Hotel La Quinta Roja: (www.quintaroja.com) in Garachico, Tenerife;• Hotel Maspalomas Oasis: (www.riu.es) in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria;• Hotel Los Fariones: telephone (+34) (0) 928-510-202, in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote;• Hotel Corralejo: (+34) (0) 928-535 -246, in Corralejo, Fuerteventura;• Hotel Jardín Tecina: (www.

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is located on the east coast of Spain. Air currents coming from the west in winter approach Barcelona with a much smaller supply of atmospheric water. When to go to Seville: holidays, festivals and weather

Seville is one of the hottest cities in Spain. In July and August the temperature is around 40℃. Because of the heat, from which you can’t hide and because of which it’s impossible to spend daylight hours in the city, Seville was nicknamed the “Spanish frying pan”. The townspeople have learned to live with such a climate, but for a tourist this is a problem: it is impossible to be on the street at such hours. During the day, air-conditioned bars and shops save you from the heat, and only closer to sunset, the city fills up with people.

The most touristic time in Seville is April-May and September-October:

  • From June to September, the temperature is between 30-36 ℃, and it rains only 1-2 days a month. The air is dry and hot.
  • In May and October, about 26 ℃ and 3-5 rainy days. You can both sunbathe and walk. The jacket is no longer needed.
  • March, April and November are the easiest months to walk around the city: the average temperature is around 20℃ and there are 3-6 rainy days per month. During the day, people wear T-shirts here, and in the evening they take out light jackets. The British at 20 ℃ wear shorts and sandals, but by the evening, when the temperature drops to 8 ℃, even they are noticeably cold.
  • In December, January and February, it rains about once every 5 days, and the temperature is about 16-18 ℃.

In February-March you can see and smell orange blossom – the color of orange trees

The weather can vary slightly from year to year. For example, in February 2020, the temperature rose to 26 ℃, and there were summer months in the history of Seville with temperatures around 20 ℃. The maximum temperature that meteorologists have recorded in the city in the entire history of observations is 45 ℃.

During the off-season, the weather can change rapidly: it is sunny and clear in the morning, the wind picks up in the evening, and it can rain at night. During a week in Seville at the end of February – beginning of March, I managed to burn myself in the sun and get caught in the rain twice.

In March, the weather is unpredictable, it may rain, but it is warm

Under such a climate, the whole life of the city adapts.

  1. All organizations, shops and shops are open in the morning. It is easiest to have breakfast or a snack at this time in bakeries and pastry shops. Small bars are also opening, but even in them, local residents mostly drink coffee in the morning.
  2. Tapas bars and restaurants open at 12:00. From this moment until 15:00, most organizations and small private shops are closed: their employees flow into the newly opened establishments. Drink a glass of sherry and have a bite of one or two tapas – that’s the whole dinner.
  3. At 15:00-16:00 establishments “for locals” are closed, shops reopen and work until 19:00-20:00. You can have a snack from 16:00 to 20:00 only in tourist establishments and in several good tapas bars, which for some reason work even at this time.
  4. Tapas bars reopen at 20:00-20:30. Until 22:00 they literally boil, and then gradually subside, and by midnight most of them are closed.

In the morning – to the patisserie In the evening – to the tapas bar

Most shops close during the day for the siesta, which lasts on average from 14. 00 to 17.00. Only large shopping malls like El Corte Inglés can afford to be open all day.

Most shops and good authentic establishments are closed on Sunday. Even the El Corte Ingles retail chain is not working. Many “local” bars only open on Tuesdays.

However, in Seville, tourism has also influenced the rhythm of the city’s life: many good establishments that have become popular with tourists thanks to bloggers and reviews on Tripadvisor have adjusted to the new reality and are ready to feed a hungry traveler even on Sunday. Buying a bottle of water in the center is also not a problem: almost all Carefour supermarkets and small shops – alimentacion are open.

You can have a snack at any time of the day at the gastro market near the Triana district

It seems that Andalusia is constantly celebrating something. During the year, the region has several public holidays when everything is closed, and two periods when the Spaniards tend to go on vacation – Semana Santa and the second half of August. During these weeks, Seville is empty, many establishments and private shops are closed.

Several local festivals become prominent tourist events and attract tens of thousands of guests. These are Carnival in Cadiz, Semana Santa (Easter Week), Seville Fair and Corpus Christi.

Crazy and satirical, the carnival of Cadiz is the most massive in Spain after the carnival in Gran Canaria. Even Franco could not ban it. It has been held in Cadiz since the 16th century, when the port city had strong trade ties with Venice, and therefore is in many ways similar to the Venetian one.

The carnival is timed to coincide with the beginning of Lent, so it takes place in late February – early March. The dates of the carnival become known several months in advance, and the exact program is published very late: one or two weeks in advance. Despite the absence of a program until the last moment, hotel rooms quickly run out as soon as the dates of the carnival are announced: regular visitors know the annual holiday schedule and know when to go.

The carnival consists of performances (mostly satirical) by singers and street festivities. Pamphlets on current topics make fun of situations and characters – local celebrities, church, government – everything that has been in the news recently, so it’s very funny for locals, but not always clear to tourists. The main venue for the song contest is the Gran Teatro de Falla, and after performances in the theater, groups of singers perform their verses in city squares and streets. These groups and their satirical verses are the main feature of the Carnival of Cadiz. Street flamenco, samba, clowning, puppet shows, comedian performances — the whole city becomes one big stage for 10 days.

Cadiz after the carnival: everyone is sleeping except the pigeons

Of the street events, the most significant take place over two weekends: tourists flock to Cadiz on Saturdays and leave on Sunday. On the first Saturday, the official opening of the carnival, and the next day, on the first Sunday, around 17:00, Gran Cabalgata (Big Parade) takes place. The second weekend of the carnival is the humorous Cabalgata del Humor (Comedy Parade) and the solemn ceremonial “burning of the sardine” – so, with humor, the Spaniards say goodbye to meat for the period of Lent. Every weekend ends with fireworks.

The carnival begins on trains and buses on the way to Cadiz: dressed up people in carnival costumes arrive in Cadiz already well warmed up. Many of them do not go to bed, and in the morning with the first flights they leave for neighboring towns in order to return to Cadiz again on Sunday evening. In order not to look like a black sheep, even tourists should come to the carnival dressed up.

There are three special gastronomic events during the carnival: Pestiñada (Fry Bakery Festival), Ostionada (Oyster Party), and Erizada (Sea Urchin Party). Their dates must be specified in the program.

During the pandemic, the carnival is postponed to other months. For example, in 2022 it was moved from February to June.

In 2022: from 2 to 12 June

Carnival dates in 2022: June 2-12. Look for the carnival program on the official tourist website of Cadiz, and here for tips and advice.

Main carnival locations:

  • Gran Teatro Falla is the official singing competition.
  • Barrio de La Viña – where to listen to couplets on the street.
  • Plaza del Catedral, La Plaza de la Flores and Plaza del Mercado – carousels, entertainment and street performances.
  • Plaza San Juan de Dios – daily fireworks.
  • Calle Ancha and Calle Columel (main shopping streets) – verses of the “illegals” group perform here – singers out of competition.

The streets of Cadiz are also decorated for the carnival

For super-religious Spain, the week before Easter (it is called “Holy”, from the word “passion”, that is, suffering) is one of the most important in the year, and Holy Week is celebrated most brightly in the country in Andalusia, especially in Seville. People from all over the country flock here to participate or at least look at the brightest processions from the outside.

Traditions date back to the 16th century: for a week, religious brotherhoods carry heavy carts with statues of Christ and Mary around the city, decorated in a royal way and very impressive. The routes and dates of the procession are different for each brotherhood, but they all pass through the cathedral. The main celebrations take place at the end of the week, from Thursday, when local women dress in all black, and tourists are expected to respect, which is manifested in at least not wearing shorts on this day.

The next time prices for hotels in Seville skyrocket is during the annual April Fair, which takes place two weeks after Easter. And if Holy Week is a mixture of mourning and joy, then the Fair is an extravaganza of joy, when rebujito flows uncontrollably, and folk costumes must be worn.

The dates of the holiday are tied to Easter, so every year is different. The fair usually falls in April or May.

Festive clothes for the fair are sold in all shopping centers

Another authentic local holiday is Corpus Christi, or the feast of the Eucharist — the conversion of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. It is celebrated only by the Catholic Church, and most brightly – in Seville.

The traditions of Corpus Christi, like Semana Santa, come from the 15th or 16th century, when they began to celebrate the Eucharist here with large solemn processions – this holiday in the Catholic tradition is considered the third most important after Christmas and Easter. The whole city is lit up with festive lights, and the townspeople are still decorating their balconies and windows, setting up mini-altars.

The main day of the holiday falls on Thursday, the 60th day after Easter. The morning begins with a festive mass in the cathedral (and this is a chance to get to a place for free where at normal times there is only a paid entrance), and then a solemn procession lasting about 4 hours passes through the streets of the city – with dances, songs and magnificent carts.
