Can I drink the tap water in Mallorca and Menorca?

Can I drink the tap water in Mallorca? Where does it come from? Why does it taste so bad? What are the issues with Mallorca tap water? What’s the best water filter for Mallorca?

In this article we will attempt to answer all your questions about tap water in Mallorca. If you just want to short answer then jump straight to the conclusion at the end.

Where does tap water in Mallorca come from?

The climate of Majorca (or Mallorca) is Mediterranean, with mild winters with some rain and dry sunny summers. The sunny climate has its pros and cons with one negative aspect being that there is water shortage every summer / early fall. Currently, 55% of Palma’s water is underground, 20% comes from reservoirs, 18% from water recycling and 7% from desalinated water (the Abaqua’s facilities). Recent investments will increase the contribution from recycled and collected rain water to 25% annually. This will hopefully reduce the need for desalinated water and the extraction of water from wells.

The underground water coms from a series of aquifers with super porous limestone, so it picks up a ton of minerals. This makes the water relatively hard. The 2 biggest reservoirs on the other hand are rainfed which is relatively soft. They are located in the western mountain range, (the Cuber and the Gorg Blau).

When the aquifers and the reservoirs get low they switch on the desalination plants to augment their supplies. There are at least three desalination plants on the island, one each in Palma, Andratx, and Alcudia. They are most active in August and September due to the dry summer and the crush of tourists. Desalinated water still tastes a bit salty even though the levels are very low. Maybe the tolerance level for how much salt that can be allowed in public drinking water when there is a major shortage?

Palma will launch a new water treatment plant in 2022 to improve the recycling of waste water and taste.

How is Mallorca tap water regulated?

Tap water in Mallorca is regulated by the Spanish water authority that also has to conform to the EU Clean Drinking Water Act. The agency that looks after the tap water locally is ABAQUA. To reduce the risk of pathogens, the sanitary surveillance of water for human consumption in the Balearic Islands requires a minimum value of 0. 2 mg / l free chlorine. To achieve this the actual free chlorine content is usually above 0.5 mg/L and sometimes as high as 1 mg/L. Tap water tastes of chlorine when it’s above 0.4 mg/L.

The local authorities also report all water quality data to SINAC which is the centrally database in Spain that monitors tap water safety.

Is Mallorca tap water safe to drink?

If you ask the locals and residents if you can drink the tap water you will probably get answers such as:

  • “You’re crazy, it’s terrible!”
  • “It tastes bad and you are going to get kidney stones.”
  • or more elaborate “Do not even think about it! My grandfather / my father / my neighbor’s uncle (choose the one that suits you) came out as a poor man selling stone from his kidneys to the crazy builders of the Mallorca highway.”

Many people will look at you with disgust if you offer them tap water to drink in Palma.

But the true answer is that the tap water in Palma and most of Mallorca is safe to drink according to EU and Spanish standards.

The negative perception of tap water stems from three issues

  1. Water calcification / limescale – people are convinced that the calcium rich water causes kidney stones. This is an urban legend / myth as there is no scientific evidence that this is the case.
  2. Spanish tummy – Back in the 70s and 80s the tap water in Spain was not super reliable. Tourists in Spain frequently got “Spanish Tummy”, or travelers diarrhea, and people knew to avoid drinking tap water. This is no longer an issue as the water is treated and chlorinated.
  3. Taste – the mineral rich tap water sources combined with chlorine and desalination makes the water taste pretty bad. Especially if you are used to tap water in northern Europe or Madrid.

Today only 34% of the citizens of Palma (1 in 3) consume tap water on a regular basis. This includes directly from the tap or through faucet filters, jugs or osmosis systems.

Tap water in Palma de Mallorca

Yes, The water with which EMAYA supplies Palma de Mallorca and that reaches our houses has a total sanitary guarantee and can be used, without any problem, for drinking and cooking.

Due to the characteristics of the sources, the water that comes from the aquifers and other sources is usually hard highly mineralized water.

The hardness of water does not pose any health risk, quite the opposite: calcium and magnesium, which characterize the hardness of water, are essential for health. There are even several medical studies that indicate a protective role of calcium and magnesium against certain cardiovascular diseases.

Here’s the official site of EMAYA .

Tap water in Menorca

The tap water in Menorca that comes from the public water supply is generally safe to drink. If not the water supplier must inform the residents. Similar to Mallorca the taste and perception of the local tap water is very bad. Therefore almost everyone drinks bottled water.

Read more about the recent requirement for restaurants in Menorca to offer tap water. Almost all water is rain water of which there is not enough in Menorca so please don’t waste it.

Where you cannot drink the tap water in Mallorca

There are still several areas of Mallorca in which the water that circulates through the public network is not suitable for drinking or cooking with it due to a high presence of nitrates. In the towns of Lloret, Sineu, s’Horta, Vilafranca and Costitx, its use is only authorized for washing and washing and it cannot be used for drinking or cooking. Boiling it doesn’t help.

The high presence of nitrates in these municipalities is due to the abusive use of agricultural fertilizers with these nitrates in the past, an action that still carries these consequences.

Was the water filter jug invented in Mallorca?

Whether it’s true or not there is also a local legend among the Germans that Brita Pitcher was invented after the founder tried to drink tea with water from a Mallorcan tap in the 60s. According to most sources the majority of Palma’s inhabitants stopped drinking plain water in the 80s due to its ‘bad taste’ and probably because bottled water became cheap and accessible everywhere.

Bottled water in Mallorca

The Balearic Islands is the second autonomous community that consumes the most bottled water in Spain, being the first position for the Canary Islands. This according to the data presented in the 2018 food consumption report of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

It is estimated that each Balearic Islands consumes 175 liters of bottled water per year, about 117 1.5-liter bottles, which represent an expense of 80 euros per year per person and the generation of 5 kilos of plastic. For the whole of Palma, there are about 2,000 tons of waste per year.

Palma has also recently installed more water fountains that include filters to remove the chlorine. There are two models, the normal ones and the ones that also have a spout so that the dogs can drink. Its purpose is that passersby can refill their reusable bottles.

Tap water in restaurants

You can safely drink tap water in restaurants in Mallorca although the taste might not be great. A recent law requires all restaurants in Mallorca to serve tap water to those who ask. But as it doesn’t require the restaurants to filter the water or to promote it this law is unlikely to have much impact.

Why fly: pleasant walks and shopping.

October is the best time to visit this Adriatic island, where the sun shines for at least 270 days a year. The mild climate makes it especially bright and easy to walk through small medieval towns and secluded bays.

Must-do: take a boat ride to the picturesque Paklinsky Islands.

Sicily, Italy

Flight time: 4 hours.

Average air temperature in October: 22 degrees.

Why fly: to feel the special Italian spirit.

This administrative region of Italy has a rich history: at different times it was in the hands of the Hellenes, Byzantines, Arabs – everyone was attracted by the favorable location of the island relative to trade routes. The climate in Sicily is favorable for off-season recreation: air and water temperatures are relatively high, and almost all autumn days are sunny.

Must do: climb one of the highest active volcanoes in Europe — Etna.

Malta

Flight time: 4 hours 10 minutes.

Average air temperature in October: 25 degrees.

Why fly: rich excursion program.

The island, which was visited by the mythical Odysseus and the real Napoleon, attracts thousands of history buffs. Many people choose October to get acquainted with the sights because of the cool weather and the relatively small number of tourists. Usually the tour starts in the capital – Valletta: travelers visit the Cathedral of St. John, where the masterpiece of Caravaggio “The Beheading of John the Baptist” is located, and the Palace of the Grand Master, built in the 16th century.

Must-do: go on a sightseeing tour of the island.

Ibiza, Spain

Average air temperature in October: 23 degrees.

Why fly: is a great vacation with friends.

The main thing that attracts this island is the capital of the same name and the city of San Antonio, where fun parties are constantly held, which are especially popular with English youth. With the onset of autumn, the degree of fun decreases slightly, as does the number of vacationers. But finding a party for yourself and friends is just as easy as finding a cheerful company of Germans, French or Spaniards.

Must-do: swim on the famous beach of Cala Vadella, surrounded by pine forests.

Mallorca, Spain

CC0 / Lgon / Mallorca

CC0 / Lgon /

Flight time: 4 hours 45 minutes.

Average air temperature in October: 24 degrees.

Why fly: for democratic rest.

During the off-season, the number of tourists thins out on the largest of the islands of the Balearic archipelago, which provides an opportunity for lovers of natural beauties and water sports – diving and windsurfing – to relax in peace. Prices at the end of the beach season are reduced, and the farther from the coast, the more.

Must-do: Walk around the old town in Palma.

Gozo, Malta

CC0 / waldomiguez / Gozo Island

CC0 / waldomiguez /

Flight time: 4 hours 10 minutes, then 25 minutes by ferry.

Average air temperature in October: 25 degrees.

Why fly: for a leisurely vacation.

According to legend, it was on this, the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago, that the nymph Calypso held Odysseus for seven years in captivity (a cave in the north of the island, a radio station, ketchup and many other things are named after her). There are few vacationers here, and even local residents in cities that look more like villages, just over thirty thousand.

Must do: take a boat trip to Comino Island, which has one hotel and only three locals.

Corsica, France

Flight time: 5 hours.

Average air temperature in October: 21 degrees Celsius.

Why fly: for a secluded vacation.

On the “island of beauty”, as Corsica is often called, there are many picturesque bays, clean beaches, and there are still very few tourists from Russia. One of the most difficult hiking trails of the famous GR 20 network passes through the local mountains, which are especially beautiful in autumn.

Must do: ride a horse from the village of Tizzano to a wild beach in the small bay of Roccapin.

Autumn in the homeland of Zeus. Velvet season on the island of Crete Jacques-Yves Cousteau, attracted by the disproportionately large depth of Voulismeni – 64 meters – compared to the size (diameter – 137 meters), was engaged in the study of an almost perfectly round reservoir. What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is a celebration that originated in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but is also observed in other English-speaking countries like the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

When is Boxing Day

Traditionally it is celebrated every year on 26th December, the day after Christmas.

Why is it called Boxing Day?

While there are different theories, the origin of Boxing Day lies in the Middle Ages, when the nobles gave their servants boxes with food and fruit and let them spend the day with their families. It also coincides with a religious tradition, in which priests brought out boxes with the charitable donations they have collected to distribute them among those in need. Hence the name.

How is Boxing Day celebrated?

Nowadays Boxing Day is a holiday in many countries, and the most popular way to spend it is by shopping, so retailers often offer big discounts for one day only. In recent years Boxing Day has expanded to Boxing Week.

What does the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife offer for Boxing Day?

Here at the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife we want to celebrate Boxing Day with an exclusive offer.

Last minute tours to Tenerife from Rostov-on-Don

Tours in Tenerife are very popular among Europeans, this is due to the amazing beauty of the Canary Islands, as well as a calm and measured beach holiday , which is so lacking in megacities. In Russia, this direction is not so popular, so you can be sure that meeting with compatriots is very unlikely. You can buy a tour in Tenerife, which will include a direct flight from Rostov-on-Don – this will reduce travel costs and make it much easier. nine0003

Hotels in Tenerife

Speaking of hotels in Tenerife, it should be understood that the main contingent of visitors are elderly Europeans. Therefore, you can be completely sure of the quality of service and the beauty of the interiors. A large number of hotels are located directly next to the beach, which will especially appeal to beach lovers.

All hotels are built to be as comfortable as possible, many are just a few spacious bungalows combined into a single complex, which is perfect for families with children. In addition, such accommodation options are cheap, in comparison with the hotels of the “classic” type. nine0003

The infrastructure of the hotels is very developed: underground parking lots, several restaurants, the possibility of tasting Spanish wines – these are just a few of the joys that will be offered to you in Spain on the island of Tenerife. For lovers of the all-inclusive system, there are also suitable offers.

Prices for accommodation are quite reasonable, if we take into account that we are talking about the Canary Islands – the tourist mecca of Europe. In addition, there is always the opportunity to purchase last-minute tours from Coral Travel, which will make your stay in Tenerife very budget friendly. nine0003

Attractions in Tenerife

Naturally, the main attractions of Tenerife are natural or associated with the primeval beauty of the island. Among the must-see places worth noting:

  1. Teide Volcano. The mesmerizing view of the volcano is the hallmark of the island. But the cable car itself to its summit is of particular interest, because it is laid through the national park, where you can not only enjoy the unique nature, but also get a dose of clean air from the relict forest. nine0233
  2. Loro Park. A natural park where about 500 species of parrots live. In addition to birds, you can meet there: dolphins, penguins, turtles, tigers and other exotic inhabitants.

¿ Cómo llegar a Tenerife?

A Volcanic Restaurant In Lanzarote

Monday, January 22, 2018
Colette Fitzpatrick

There are always those bizarre attractions, right? You know the ones. The world’s biggest ball of yarn, the oldest restaurant, the first, the biggest the fastest, the something “est”. A lot of tourist attractions in Spain are based around cultural value and heritage or natural beauty but there are some things that are just unique or strange and worth seeing so you can say you did and have a fun anecdote.

What’s even better still, however, is when you can also get something good to eat! Well, look no further than Lanzarote, where you can eat food cooked in a volcano!

Just find a vacation rental in the Canary Islands and head to Lanzarote to visit El Diablo restaurant for a meal unlike anything else you’ve ever tried before.

Located on the side of a volcano in the middle of the Timanfaya National Park in the Canary Islands, El Diablo was founded in 1970 by Cesar Manrique, who decided that a volcano (that was a tourist attraction as it was), was the best place to establish a formal restaurant in the area.

Architects Eduardo Caceres and Jesus Soto were hired to take on the task of constructing a restaurant in such a precarious and strange location. In order to make it work, they had to lay 9 layers of basalt rock in lieu of digging down to build a foundation.

The actual cooking is done on a giant grill that is laid across a volcano opening. Six feet below is some softly bubbling lava at 400 degrees Celsius; the perfect place to grill some meat and fish, of course!

Enjoying a three course meal on the side of a volcano is not something you get to try out every day so why not pay a visit and have a one-of-a-kind foodie experience? You don’t worry about the safety factor either – there has been no eruptions since the 19th century, so you should be pretty safe.

✈️El Diablo, the restaurant in Lanzarote that cooks with volcanic heat

On the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, the restaurant El Diablo cooks its food on a grill powered by the heat of a volcano!

What could be more natural than to organise a barbecue evening on a volcano? At the El Diablo restaurant, located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, chefs cook food using the heat produced by a volcano.

El Diablo is a unique restaurant where the chefs have free and direct access to a volcano. Of course, the volcano does not spew lava, in which case it would be difficult to eat quietly. The crater looks more like a well, from which volcanic heat rises from the depths of the Earth.

And it is precisely this heat (between 450 and 500°C all year round) that the creators of El Diablouse. Long before the creation of the restaurant, visitors from the volcanic region (especially from the Timanfaya National Park) came here to taste a dish of sardines and wine. But in 1970, César Manrique, a local artist, decided to create an official restaurant in the region. With the help of the architect Eduardo Cáceres and the artist Jesus Soto, a giant grill was built on the ground in order to use the incredible heat beneath the surface of the Earth. This is how the restaurant El Diablo was born. The grill is used to prepare several meat, poultry, and fish dishes that are served at the restaurant’s tables.

The construction was not easy of course. All this heat on the surface made it impossible to dig foundation trenches. So they laid nine layers of basalt rock to serve as a base for the structure. Traditional Canarian specialities and dishes are offered on the restaurant’s menu, but the menu is only one of the attractions of the place.

Many people come to the “volcano restaurant” to admire the beautiful surroundings and the view it offers. The “Martian” landscape of the island, although barren, is breathtaking. The best time to come is during sunset, when the light fades and creates spectacular effects on the sandy slopes of the volcanoes.

You should know that the restaurant has consulted scientists and volcanologists to check the food and the way it is grilled, and they have given them their green light, judging the dishes on offer to be healthy. So there is no danger for this type of cooking.

If you thought you were going to enjoy a delicious local dish with lava eruptions in the air, you missed it. There hasn’t been any activity since the last eruption in 1824.

volcano restaurant (Spain) • Terra-Z

We have already told you about the most unusual restaurants in the world, and today it’s time to introduce you to another amazing restaurant – Spanish El Diablo (Spanish Devil). The restaurant with such an intriguing name is located on the Canary Island of Lanzarote, which is famous for its countless geysers and volcanoes. You don’t need to order gas stoves to cook food in El Diablo, because here everything is cooked right above the mouth of the volcano. But this is not at all the volcano that mercilessly burns everything in its path: there is only a little heat from the depths of the earth, with the help of which the effect of a natural barbecue is created.

Restaurant El Diablo was created in 1970, when the architect and designer Cesar Manrique realized that such a supply of natural energy should not be wasted. Before the construction of El Diablo, only small tourist tents with snacks could be found on the island. During the construction of El Diablo, one of the openings of the volcano was left open and overlaid with stone blocks. Now it is used as a barbecue, where fish and meat are fried in a matter of minutes. It is worth noting that tourists can observe the entire cooking process. Although, if you look, this is not surprising, for example, the restaurant for a wedding in Kyiv “Tsarevka” can also invite anyone to the kitchen to watch what is happening.

The restaurant is located in the Timanfaya National Park and thanks to its mountainous location you can enjoy wonderful views of the park and the island of Lanzarote. The magnificent panorama of the Canary Island is another reason to visit El Diablo, a unique restaurant on the slopes of Lanzarote.

The real-time satellite image combines visible light during daytime with infrared radiation during nighttime. At night, the image is not dark as infrared radiation can detect temperature differences. Unfortunately, low clouds and fog are difficult to distinguish from ground temperatures and thus can be almost invisible during the night. Meteosat satellite images for Europe are updated in real-time every 5 minutes. GOES-16/GOES-17 (North & South America) and Himawari (Asia) images update every 10 minutes.

Precipitation is estimated from radar and satellites. At night precipitation estimates from satellites are less accurate than during daytime. Orange crosses mark places where lightning was detected (over Europe).

Ensembles are produced by running the same weather models many different times with slightly varying initial conditions. Because we can’t observe every tiny bit of air in our atmosphere, our picture of the weather currently is incomplete. Any small error in the weather model initially due to this gap in observation is compounded exponentially out through time due to chaos. Ensembles attempt to fix this problem by starting the model with a bunch of ideas of what the atmosphere could be doing right now. Each one of these ideas will create its own outcome, known as an ensemble member. Ensembles are a great tool for gauging uncertainty in a forecast. If all, or almost all, the ensemble members agree on a particular outcome, you can have high confidence that that outcome will occur. If the ensembles disagree, it’s wise not to put too much confidence in one outcome or another. Different ensemble systems have different numbers of ensemble members and the more ensemble members there are, the better the forecast will be as it will take into account a wider range of possibilities. Because there are more potential forecast outcomes as you head farther out into the future, ensembles become especially useful after Day 4 or 5.

Hovering the time series with the cursor will show the minimum, maximum and mean vaules of the ensemble and the result of the main run.

Description and location of the Martianez Beach in Puerto de la Cruz (Canary islands)

Our opinion on the Martianez Beach

Adresse of the Martianez Beach :
Av. de Cristobal Colón 38400 Puerto de la Cruz

Martianez beach of Puerto de la Cruz (Playa Martianez) is situated in the east part of the seaside resort next to the famous park of Manrique (Lago Martianez). Reduced to a narrow strip of black sand at high tide, this beach is mainly frequented by surfers. Surrounded by buildings of the fifties without real charm (including some hotels), this beach has little interest in our sense (but often agitated, very narrow and un pleasant environment). We will prefer the Jardin beach or the one of Lago Martianez (paid entry).

There is a beach restaurant on the left side. Also many restaurants in San Telmo street (tourist artery of Puerto de la Cruz).

The beach is supervised all year round (be careful of the stream on both ends of the beach that can carry you off to the wide).

Annonce

The left area is the largest. The right one is covered by the waters at high tide. Neighboring towers are not very nice.

Most people settle on the left side. In the background, we have the Lago Martianez ( park landscaped by Manrique with several pools and restaurants).

Pleasant pedestrian promenade at the junction of the main pedestrian street of Puerto de la Cruz.

From the beach, beautiful view of the north coast of Tenerife which becomes very rocky with cliffs. Beaches are rare leaving Puerto de la Cruz.

In this area, there are many unachieved buildings from the fifties (real estate crisis in Spain).

Best beaches and beach clubs in Tenerife for sun and fun

Tenerife is famed for its year-round sunshine and volcanic heart. But did you know there are also has a number of great beaches and upscale beach clubs in Tenerife where you can soak up the sun and the atmosphere? The island of Eternal Spring, as Tenerife is known, has year-round sunshine and more than 50 beaches on which to enjoy the Saharan breeze that cools the heat from the Canary Islands’ unending sunshine. Most sources would have you believe that the best beaches in Tenerife lie in the island’s sizzling south coast resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.

But don’t dismiss Tenerife’s green north as you’ll find some divine coastline in and around its capital Santa Cruz, it’s main northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz as well as towns like Garachico.

Southern beaches may be well known but whether you head north or south there are beaches to satisfy all tastes, and with a host of cool beach clubs in Tenerife offering up an exclusive environment in which to chill at the coast, the island has plenty for luxury travellers.

Beachside beats spun by DJs, cabanas and terraces with relaxing sun loungers, as well as tasty meals and your favourite cocktails, Tenerife’s beach clubs have plenty to offer sunseekers.

We’ll take you through some of the finest beaches in Tenerife, followed by a selection of the most stylish beach clubs for you to lounge in or click the link to jump right to it.

Table of Contents

The best beaches in Tenerife

Let’s start with a selection of under-appreciated but beautiful beaches in Tenerife’s north.

Playa Jardin – tropical garden beach of the north

Playa Jardin is arguably one of the best beaches on Tenerife’s north coast and the most popular in Puerto de la Cruz. At one kilometre long, this enticing stretch of fine black sand (don’t forget Tenerife is a volcanic island so the only naturally occurring sand is black) is set against a backdrop of fabulous tropical gardens.

It is backed by a landscape of vibrant colourful flowers and plants, charming stone walls and water features which make up the designer garden. This all makes for a delightful environment, which you stroll through to get down to the beach.

Once at the beach at Playa Jardin, you’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas for hire as well as cafés, changing rooms, and showers.

Playa Martiánez Tenerife’s city beach

Playa Martiánez may not be the largest in the island’s second city of Puerto de la Cruz, but it’s one of the closest sandy beaches to the city centre. The sea here can be a bit choppy and so is popular with surfers.

If you fancy a change of scenery Playa Martiánez is also very close to Lago Martianez. The town’s excellent lido was designed by the Canary Island’s renowned artist and architect, César Manrique.

The lido has palms trees, sunbathing areas, natural saltwater pools, an array of tropical plants and landscaped gardens as well as good bars and cafés.

Playa del Muelle to make like a local

A popular beach with the locals is in the charming 15th-century town of Garachico. Playa del Muelle is a bay sheltered by rocks next to the town’s harbour and is a short walk from its outstanding natural rock pools. Again the sand is black, but the water was calm.

Here children joyfully leap from walls and rocks into the Atlantic depths below.

Playa de Las Teresitas shows Tenerife’s golden side

Looking for stretches of golden sand? The north of the island can deliver here too. Playa Las Teresitas a ten minutes drive from capital Santa Cruz, has to be one of the best beaches in Tenerife.

Lined with palm trees and stretching over 1.5 kilometres, Playa Las Teresitas is a man-made beach. The sand has been shipped in from the Sahara, but it’s really very pretty and popular with in-the-know locals on weekends.

The sea is calm and the facilities are very good with toilets, showers, sunbeds and places to eat.

From north to south there are so many Tenerife beaches

Once you have had your fill of the beaches in the north journey to Tenerife’s southern coast. The more arid part of the island, the south is also where the main tourist resorts are and you’ll have a great choice of Tenerife beaches.

Relaxed Playa del Duque

Awarded a Blue Flag for the quality of the water and services, Playa del Duque is a relaxed quarter of Tenerife’s south coast. It’s located in Costa Adeje and is favoured by those seeking a quieter beach with good amenities including showers, changing rooms and toilets.

There is a nearby car park if you wish to drive there and once you are finished on the beach the area is very well served by shops and restaurants.

Families head to Troya beach, Tenerife

Located in the well-visited resort of Playa de las Americas, Playa Troya is one of Tenerife’s most lively and popular. Again, it is a Blue Flag beach, awarded for its safety and cleanliness, and it is popular with families.

It is actually two bays called Troya I and Troya II but is considered one of the finest beaches in Tenerife. It is wide and the sea mainly calm, although if you are looking to relax, it can be noisy. You’ll find an abundance of activities here including stand-up paddleboarding, parasailing and jet skiing.

Ride a wave at Playa Tejita

Playa Tejita can be quite windy but it makes it perfect for anyone looking to catch the waves. At approximately a kilometre long it has a very wide stretch of pale golden sand. Playa Tejita is one of the Tenerife’s biggest natural beaches and is popular for water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Playa Tejita is in El Médano close to the Montaña Roja, or Red Mountain, and is a protected nature reserve. Part of it is also one of the more popular nudist beaches in Tenerife.

Saharan sands of Las Vistas beach

Las Vistas beach in the resort of Los Cristianos has a semi-circle shape and is covered in soft golden sand imported from the Sahara desert. Protective breakwaters ensure the sea here remains mostly calm and shallow.

Las Vistas beach is particularly good for swimming, making it a favourite with families holidaying on Tenerife. All the usual beach facilities are here including sun lounges, beach bars, and watersports.

The coastal delight of El Puertito Tenerife

The small, quiet village of El Puertito is what helps make Playa el Puertito so appealing. It is a peaceful and relaxed place, which has in the main been untouched by modernity, keeping its traditional Canarian village feel.

As such it is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, or more accurately, look out to sea. The black sand beach is quite small, however, it’s a favourite with local people.

Where to find a nudist beach in Tenerife

If you are seeking a nudist beach in Tenerife there are plenty of options where you can sunbathe au naturel with like-minded naturists. They include:

  • Playa Tejita – the nudist beach is at the Red Mountain end.
  • Playa las Gaviotas – in the north of Tenerife, close to Playa de Las Teresitas.
  • Playa de Los Patos – an isolated beach with no facilities.
  • Playa del Pozo in the north of the island and is popular with gay visitors.
  • Playa de la Pelada is an isolated but very popular beach.
  • Playa del Callao is close to the resorts of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos.

Chic coast – luxury beach clubs in Tenerife

Don your designer swimsuit and sunglasses and hit the beach in style. Tenerife’s beach clubs are some of the chicest corners of the coast for a day in the sun.

Papagayo Beach Club for funky beats

Papagayo gives the White Isle of Ibiza a run for its money with its cool white decor and funky club beats that play till dawn on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

During the day this is a quiet, modern beach club, just perfect for a morning coffee, lunch or dinner from its restaurant, serving everything from gourmet burgers to Japanese food.

Papagayo Beach Club is located on Troya beach in the south of Tenerife and opens from June to October each year.

Hang around at Monkey Beach Club

With bamboo furniture, lush vegetation and swaying palm trees and beautiful views over the neighbouring island of La Gomera from its restaurant, Monkey Beach Club, also in Playa la Troya, is one of the most popular beach clubs in Tenerife.

Its restaurant serves a delicious selection of Mediterranean dishes. And with a schedule of 25 beach parties each summer featuring DJs like Roger Sánchez, Wally López, Crazibiza, DJ Oliver, and Fonsi Nieto, it’s also a great place to let your hair down.

Join Le Club

Perhaps the most stylish of Tenerife’s beach clubs, Le Club on Playa Fañabé has Balinese beds, chillout music and massage treatments for those looking to relax.

For some fun in the sun, you can hop on a jet ski or banana to ride the waves from Fañabé’s golden coast.

Afterwards, sample Le Club’s delicious international dishes or order a sundowner for the perfect finish to your day in the sun.

Infinite options at Kaluna Beach Club

This modern beach club between the beaches of Puerto Colón and Torviscas has plenty of options for visitors. After soaking up the rays, cool off with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean or Kaluna Beach Club’s spectacular infinity pool. Alternatively, grab a glass of champagne or a cocktail at the bar.

Hire a VIP cabin and enjoy a place by the sea for drinks or food with friends. It’s also a perfect place to enjoy the sunset. And if you’re looking for a beach club to party at in Tenerife, Kaluna’s Infinity Pool Party each Thursday is a very popular choice.

Find places to stay in Tenerife

We recommend luxury hotels in and around Fañabé and Costa Adeje. Search for the stylish La Plantación del Sur, the excellent though rather usual Bahía del Duque (which reminds us of Portmeirion in Wales), the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife for every budding rock star in the family. Or go further out west to the beautiful Gran Melia Palacio de Isora – home to Europe’s largest infinity swimming pool.

If you’re heading north, search for Hotel Botanico and Spa, or a characterful boutique such as Hotel San Roque or Hotel La Quinta Roja in Garachico.

Today we went, as it seemed to us, along an interesting route from Puerto de la Cruz to two wild beaches. Let’s see what really happened, and how wild they are.

Since we live on the outskirts of the city of Puerto de la Cruz, the beginning of our journey ran through the greenest area of the city – Botanico. It owes its name to the botanical garden, one of the oldest in Tenerife. Neighboring quarters do not differ much from the garden itself – they are just as green. nine0003

There are many luxury apartments in the Botanico area. True, it is almost impossible to find housing for long-term rent – for a month of observations, we came across only ads. The first apartment was perfect, but they were rented right after we left. The rest had some shortcomings – there was no internet, no view from the window, or they were in the basement. Good deals sell out very quickly.

The Botanico area ends in a wasteland with an abandoned house and a highway. If you are passing through Puerto de la Cruz, then you can leave your car here. Here are the parking coordinates. nine0003

Let’s move on. We dive into the underpass (point on the map) and find ourselves in a completely different world. Around the endless forests of banana plantations. You walk along the banana road, and in the distance the blue-blue ocean. Solid romance. And everywhere – pointers to the only restaurant in the area. I even wanted to see what was served in it.

The path descends into the large ravine of the Barranco de la Arena. The terraces around look like the walls of a fortress. If you do not know that bananas once grew on these slopes, then you immediately begin to imagine sentries and cannons on the walls. On the other side of the gorge, in a cactus garden, there is a romantic bench. nine0003

The first beach is Playa De El Bollullo. It is located in a bay surrounded by high cliffs. I think they cover from the wind and create a warm microclimate. Sand is black. The entry into the sea is good, but in some places there are huge boulders. Until noon, there were not many people on the beach, and after that it was already enough to run out of places in the first parking lot.

By the way, the only option to park is in the parking lot near Restaurante Bollullo Beach for €3 per day. Here are the coordinates. Therefore, it is better to walk on foot, it is more useful. We will return to the restaurant. nine0003

After the beach, the road leads to the cape. It meets hot air currents from the beach with cold northern winds and salty droplets from the ocean. The road leaves a tunnel of bushes. Then for a short while he comes to a cliff and a ruined staircase to a wild rocky beach. Don’t walk through it.

Then the road collapsed, but there is a detour. A passage was cut through in the stone wall, and we go around the ruined area through hot banana plantations. And so, we again emerge from the wall, and what a wonderful view in front of us. nine0003

The northern rocky coastline is visible. Below is the nudist beach Playa Los Patos, but to get to it, you need to go further along the path for a few more kilometers. Here are his coordinates.

We decided to stop there and returned to Restaurante Bollullo Beach.

A paradise to vacation all year round with the best climate

There are few places in the world with such a privileged climate as the one on the island of Tenerife. Its meteorological and orographic conditions result in a succession of unique landscapes in which it is possible to find large valleys, beautiful beaches and lush forests that invite fantasy.

Throughout the year you can enjoy a pleasant climate thanks to its mild temperatures without great fluctuations. Wouldn’t it be ideal to enjoy a winter vacation in this charming summer paradise? The temperature in Tenerife during the month of December varies between 19º and 24º, an interval that is repeated throughout the year.

Enjoy a holiday in the open air, full of long days with lots of light! The island of Tenerife is one of the regions of Europe with the most hours of sunshine thanks to its geographical position.

In addition, the trade winds make it possible for the climate to be so pleasant in the south of Tenerife. Although the location of the island is close to Africa, there are no seasons of extreme heat, as there are in countries and territories that have the same latitude.

The trade winds and the favored climate of the island

These are constant winds that blow from the poles of the two hemispheres towards the equatorial zones. In the case of the Archipelago, these air masses are picked up by the Azores Anticyclone, which also plays a determining factor in the favored climate that Tenerife has.

These factors mean that in winter, when the anticyclone is very close to the island, there is greater thermal stability and less presence of the trade winds; while in summer, when the anticyclone migrates, the effect of the trade winds is greater and temperatures remain stable. For this reason, the climate of Tenerife is always pleasant, despite being geographically located in a subtropical area.

One of the most characteristic phenomena produced by the trade winds is what is known as the “sea of clouds”. You can find this amazing effect on the northern slopes of the Islands that exceed 1,500 meters in altitude.

What should I bring in my suitcase when visiting Tenerife?

The island’s climate during December, as described above, does not decrease below 19º or increase above 24º. It is advisable to pack cool clothing in your suitcase that will help you combat the temperatures at their highest peaks, but also some warm clothing, especially for arms and legs, since temperatures drop is normal at night.

Under these contrasts, you should not forget the sunscreen since, even on the least clear days, you run the risk of suffering from sunstroke by being exposed to the sun’s rays for a long time. How could it be otherwise, I can’t forget your swimsuit and some goggles for diving. Tenerife has amazing sea beds that you cannot miss.

The fauna and flora of the island is of great diversity due to two determining factors: insularity and climate. A fact that can be seen both on the surface and underwater.

Enjoy the beach all year round

The first image that many evoke of Tenerife is the beautiful blue sea. Indeed, our senses, when thinking of Tenerife as a holiday destination, are inevitably sprinkled with saltpeter, with extensive beaches that revolve around the wonderful and immense Atlantic. Virgin places of volcanic black sand.

For this and several other reasons, Tenerife has become the perfect place to escape the cold winter and feel the warmth of the sun again by the sea. Undoubtedly a luxury destination that will delight those tourists who are looking for a massive dose of sun to replenish their vitamin D.

Discover 5 Tenerife sea and pool favorite swimming locations!

Tenerife is a stunning holiday destination with all year round sunshine. The climate is perfect for open water swimming in the Tenerife sea, where average air temperatures range between 17 C and 24 C with sea temperatures rarely dropping far below 20 C.

Wind speeds (often from Sahara desert) vary more widely during the year and the amount of swell can be affected by several factors including wind and tides. One advantage of the island is that conditions are not always constant from location to location. A quick check of a weather report can determine the best site for swimming that day. loan on a card without refusal and calls urgently

Here are some of our favorite locations for swimming in Tenerife:

1. The cliffs at Los Gigantes

It provides a stunning backdrop for some wild coastal swimming. It is possible to swim in the small bay next to the harbor but be sure to watch out for boat traffic. The cliffs are surely magnificent and tower over 500 meters high. We would also recommend that you take a boat tour to try and see dolphins. Some of the tours stop to allow for swimmers to take a short dip. Our boat trip stopped at the end of the Masca trail, which is an excellent hike for enthusiasts. The other way of doing it is that one person take a kayak (plenty rental places there) and the other swims along. You can go for miles along the cliffs. Just watch out for any traffic as there could be jet-skis or boats passing by. nine0005

2. ‘Hippy beach’near La Caletta

It is a special location, though be sure to plan a safe entry and exit to the water. There is a small community of people living on the beach who add a fascinating character to the already stunning location. For secluded sun bathing and some adventure swimming, be sure to have a look. To get there, walk out of La Caletta along the coastal path, with the sea on your left. There are a series of beaches to be enjoyed.

3. Sea pool, La Caletta

It deserves a visit if you want an easy and relatively safe swim. The large area is enclosed by a wall which minimises the swell and makes getting in and out easy. It is a 15 minute walk from La Caletta, along the coast, keeping the sea on your right. There are usually visitors walking along, so you feel being close to the public.

4. Costa Martianez

An absolute gem of a find offering a different type of swimming experience. Perfect for an easy swimming day, or even if you just feel like relaxing by a pool on a lounger. These man-made sea pools are artistically designed and provide a safe environment to enjoy a day. They are positioned right on the ocean and are freshly supplied with sea water. They are not heated, however the pools are not deep and so are warmed by the sun, enough for swimmers to experience a pleasantly refreshing dip. nine0005

5. T3 Sports Top Training Center

La Caletta offers a modern training facilities for a variety of sports. They run 25m and 50m outdoor heated pools all year round and many swimmers and triathletes find this location attractive especially in the winter and spring months when Europe is still cold. Other facilities are: 100x70m natural pitch, running track, indoor and outdoor gym, tennis courts, 3 beach volleyball courts, etc.

Remember; always wear a brightly colored swimming cap to make yourself visible. Nowadays, open water swimmers also carry self-carrying tow floats when swimming on their own. Seek advice from locals to work out conditions and safety. nine0005

Tenerife offers all year round travel from several European destinations and usually deals are very good except maybe during the school holidays.
