Time difference

Travelmath provides an online time zone
converter for places all over the world. You can enter airports,
cities, states, countries, or zip codes to find the time difference
between any two locations. The calculator will automatically
adjust for daylight saving time (DST) in the summer. You can
use it as a meeting planner or a scheduler to find the best time
to make international phone calls. World time zones have a
positive or negative offset computed from Coordinated Universal
Time (UTC), or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC has uniform
seconds defined by International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap
seconds announced at irregular intervals to compensate for the
Earth’s slowing rotation. The tz database or zoneinfo database
uses the closest city, rather than the more common Eastern,
Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones in the United States.
Countries often change their daylight saving rules, so please

    Guide to Cadiz

Cadiz is a port city located in the southwest of Spain, the capital of the province of Cadiz. The city has been home to the Spanish Navy since the 18th century and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in southwestern Europe. Visitors to the city can enjoy amazing views of the city and many historical sites throughout the city. The city has been known since antiquity from different angles, including El Populo, La Viña and Santa Maria.

One of the city’s most famous sights is the cathedral, which was built on the site of an old cathedral completed in 1260 and burnt down in 1596. Construction of the current cathedral, which is largely built in the Baroque style, was started in 1776 and took 116 years to complete.

The port is used for fishing, sailing, commercial and passenger traffic and has a ship repair base. Within the basin of Cadiz is Reina Victoria Quay, 220 meters long and 10 meters deep, and serves freight and passenger traffic. From the port you can catch a ferry to Arrecife, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Guide to Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a beautiful port city located on the island of Tenerife, the largest of the western islands in the archipelago of the Canary Islands. Around its important port are wide avenues, squares and exotic landscape areas, which also include fine examples of Art Nouveau architecture. The history of the city dates back a little over four hundred years. Despite the landings on this coast by Alonso Fernandez de Lugo in 1494, the city did not begin to develop until a century later, with its port, the engine for growth, which made the city the second most populous in the Canary archipelago. In the city center, close to the sea, some of the busiest streets and squares of the capital meet, for example, Plaza de la Candelaria. Situated on the site of the former fortress of San Cristobal, its center is presided over by the Triumph of Candelaria monument, neoclassical sculptures in the style of Carrara marble and attributed to the Italian Pasquale Bocciardo.

National Parks in the Canary Islands

Once we venture inland on the islands and leave behind their paradise-like beaches, the archipelago offers a rich and surprising array of natural spaces. Ancient forests, spectacular volcanoes, incredible dunes… The nature of the Canary Islands is an authentic treasure and, as such, is especially protected.

Contenido

The Canary Islands have one of the most valuable ecosystems in the world. That’s why 40% of the archipelago is catalogued as protected natural space. Part of this territory corresponds to their four fantastic natural parks. There’s a reason why the Canary Islands are the region with the most national parks in Spain.

Beyond their incredible natural value, the national parks of the Canary Islands make up an extraordinary heritage that is the product of the archipelago’s volcanic nature.

Contenido

Teide National Park

The island of Tenerife is home to the most visited natural park in Spain and one of the most visited in the world: the Teide National Park. The third tallest volcano on the planet and the highest point in the geography of Spain, it is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and scenery. Accessible on foot, via a six-hour hike along stunning trails, or in a comfortable cable car that can get you to the top in eight minutes, it offers stunning views of the island. On clear sunny days you can even see the nearby islands of La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 and is home to numerous endemic species of flora and fauna, as well as important archaeological sites relating to the first settlers of the Canary Islands, the ‘guanches’.

Timanfaya National Park

On the astonishing red and black volcanic land of Lanzarote lies Timanfaya National Park, which was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. It is of volcanic origin and has more than 25 volcanoes of exquisite beauty on its more than 5,000 hectares that can be visited on foot, by bus or on a pleasant camel ride that takes around 25 minutes. Given that there is still volcanic activity at some points of the park, which are very popular with tourists, you can feel the heat coming off the coloured rocks and sand.

It is practically virgin territory, untouched by man, that reveals astounding scenery that looks like something from another world. Being in the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire) in Lanzarote is almost like stepping onto Mars. Real landscapes that look like fiction that have appeared in many films, such as Moby Dick by Ron Howard.

Garajonay National Park

The great natural treasure of the island of La Gomera is this national park, which is named after the romantic native legend of Gara and Jonay, the Canary Islands equivalent of Romeo and Juliet, who threw themselves from the top of the mountain for love. In this lush, humid laurisilva, one of the few that still exist in the world, there is an abundance of moss and ferns, which grow wildly amidst the mist. A magical place with a highly accessible network of paths that make their way through incredible, ancient trees.

Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and a Biosphere Reserve together with the rest of the island of La Gomera, the park covers an area of almost 4,000 hectares and is home to the Laguna Grande recreational area and the popular Juego de Bolas visitor centre.

Caldera de Taburiente National Park

The heart of La Palma is green. The centre of the island is an impressive hollow that is almost eight kilometres in diameter and up to a kilometre and a half deep. A unique structure that gives Caldera de Taburiente its name. Of volcanic origin, its steep cliffs and lush Canary Island pine forest are surrounded by spectacular waterfalls.

Along with Canary Island pine trees, it contains varieties or rockrose and heather. At the crest of the rocky rim surrounding the caldera, we find the Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory. The island, which was designated a World Biopshere Reserve in its entirety in 2002, is one of the three best places in the world for stargazing.

5 Best Warm Winter Destinations in Europe

Whether you want to lie on a beach all day or have fun outdoors, defrost in these top winter sun locations

Now we all know the climate is changing worldwide and winters seem to be getting longer and colder. While fun can be found in the snow, windy, wet and cold is not as much fun.

Travelling to the other side of the world can be a bit drastic, not to mention expensive but no worries here we can show you five great places to visit and enjoy a milder winter climate, for a short break or if you are lucky the whole of the European winter.

Madeira

The beautiful island in the Atlantic is a particularly welcoming gem in the cold of winter. With up to ten hours of sunshine, even in January and a temperate climate, it is popular with those wanting to get away from the cold. In the winter months, there are fewer tourists around and that allows more opportunities to wander and get to meet the locals.

The low cost of living makes it a very attractive venue.  The history and beauty of the island, with its volcanic beaches and laurel forest, make it especially welcoming for trekkers and hikers but even those who prefer a gentler stroll will enjoy Madeira.

Duration of school winter holidays in Germany

Many people think that studying in this country does not last long. This is due to the fact that the winter holidays in Germany are quite long, while rest for children is provided 6 times per academic year. In reality, students study here for 41–42 weeks, while in Russia it is 33–36 weeks.

Each season has certain positive and negative sides, but children love them mainly for the opportunity to take a break from school, go on a trip. The schedule of German winter holidays in schools differs from those established in other countries. In addition, in different lands of the country, the duration of rest for Christmas and other winter holidays is different. For example:

  1. In Hamburg, children have a winter holiday from December 21 to January 4 and one day on 29January.
  2. In Berlin, holidays last from 21.12 to 02.01, and then from 1.02 to 06.02.

Public holidays and school holidays during the German winter holidays are established by official law. Sometimes they refer only to a particular city or even an educational institution. They can change annually, so it is important to clarify this point before the trip.

Peculiarities of school winter holidays in Germany

Winter Europe can be compared to a fairy tale that will give a lot of positive emotions not only to children, but also to adults. The main festivities fall on Christmas (December 25), so many tend to come here at this time. Holidays in Germany will be an unforgettable event, as nature in this Central European country is mesmerizing. Mountains and forests are covered with pure white snow, while the temperature is comfortable, not too low.

Many German cities look especially beautiful in winter. At this time of the year, they are decorated with Christmas lights and biblical sculpture scenes. The latter are performed in natural size. In colorful small stalls you can buy tea, sweets and much more to create a festive atmosphere. In Germany, Christmas markets and bright performances are sure to be arranged, visiting which you will feel the fabulousness of this country. In addition, winter is a period of big discounts and sales.

German winter holiday programs for schoolchildren

School winter vacation programs in Germany are diverse. They can be intensive and individual, include a different number of classes, excursions. When contacting the Chancellor company, you can choose a program that will meet your wishes:

  1. DID Deutsch-Institut. This is an intensive course designed for teenagers (14-17 years old). The minimum duration of a trip is a week. Every year the school graduates more than 10 thousand students and pupils from 30 countries of the world. Training takes place in Augsburg – a majestic, ancient city, which is located just half an hour from Munich. During the Renaissance, it was the center of music, painting and architecture, so children will be interested not only in learning, but also in enjoying the surrounding beauty.
  2. Home Language International. This children’s language program will help you learn German and have fun. Provides individual training in the family of a native speaker teacher. The program is completely determined by the personal needs of the child in the assimilation of knowledge. You can individually choose the intensity, excursions, sports. The organizers will select for you a family in which it will be as comfortable as possible.
  3. Humboldt-Institut is one of the best language schools that organizes German courses for children and adults. The cities where the training takes place are BAA Schussenril and Lindenberg. The first is a historical city, which is famous for its healing springs and mud baths. Lindenberg is a resort located at the foot of the Alps. Ideal for those wishing to go skiing or ice skating.

The cost of winter holidays in Germany for schoolchildren is set on a package of services that includes education, accommodation for the child, meals and additional classes. At the request of parents, you can improve the trip: book excursions, sports.

How can Chancellor help?

In order for the school winter German holidays in the camp to leave exclusively positive emotions, it is necessary to approach their planning responsibly. The search for a program should be started 3-4 months before it starts. If you do it yourself, there is a risk of making mistakes, stumbling upon scammers or overpaying.

If you want to send your child on vacation to another country, contact the Chancellor. Here you will find a variety of offers, from which you can choose the appropriate option. You will not need to deal with organizational issues, because the employees of the company are responsible for them.

where to go on winter holidays 2022 / Chip.Travel Blog

Where will you go on New Year’s holidays? Yes, right now, in the middle of autumn, it’s time to answer this question. You will have the opportunity to choose your destination, view the best deals and book your luxury vacation without the fuss.

Both your children and loved ones will definitely like the idea of going abroad for the New Year – to a warm country where there is a sea. We offer nine of the best outdoor destinations where the sun, fruits and national color will make your vacation truly heavenly.

Dominican Republic

Spoiler: The Dominican Republic is perfect during the New Year holidays. More than 90% of the inhabitants of the republic are Catholics, so they celebrate Christmas (December 25) on a special scale. New Year is also held in high esteem: in hotels animations, decor and all the paraphernalia of the holiday are available.

Tourists enjoy walking among decorated fir trees, taking pictures with Santas and admiring the garlands hung on palm trees and buildings. All this looks very exotic against the background of snow-white beaches, warm sea (25-27 degrees) and truly summer air (30-32 degrees).

You can also enjoy all the delights of outdoor activities in winter:

  • Maximum water clarity – ideal for divers
  • Medium wave length – for surfing (Atlantic coast is more suitable)

December and January are high season in the Dominican Republic. Together with you, Europeans, Americans, Asians will come to bask in the sun. Choose one of the popular resorts on the coast: Boca Chica, Puerto Plata, Juan Dolio, Punta Cana, La Romana.

If you plan to go on an excursion inland, take a windbreaker – it can be a little cooler there. In general, the New Year holidays are well suited for exploring the beautiful locations of the republic, primarily due to the optimal weather.

United Arab Emirates

It is in December-January that the air temperature in the UAE reaches figures that are bearable for a European – up to 35 degrees. This means that the high season begins, the peak of which falls just in the second half of December.

Christmas in the UAE, of course, is not celebrated, but to please the guests of the country, they decorate buildings, put up Christmas trees, arrange entertainment programs. But the New Year is celebrated pompously. For example, thousands of tourists travel to Dubai to see the most gorgeous fireworks in the world.

When choosing one of the emirates, be aware that all of them are suitable for a beach holiday, but each has its own characteristics:

  • Sharjah is a “strict” emirate, where drinking alcohol is significantly limited. Holidays here will appeal to families with children or couples leading a healthy lifestyle
  • Dubai – between visiting the beaches, explore the “city of the future”, walk around the shopping centers and malls: the season of maximum discounts just opens in December
  • Abu Dhabi – here almost every hotel holds a grand New Year’s party, shows for children, concerts of famous performers. The holiday program can be very intense
  • Ras al Khaimah – New Year is celebrated here with fireworks, festivals (including music and culinary), folk festivals

Egypt

Already almost native to Russians, Egypt is in high demand in December. The weather is still quite beachy (especially on the Red Sea coast), and heated pools in hotels allow you to swim in plenty.

And most importantly, the New Year’s Eve can be combined with a tour of historical sites – without the sweltering heat, excursions will be much more pleasant. Offers from guides this season are no less than in any other.

Entertain yourself with buying New Year’s gifts, as sales start in the country’s shopping centers from mid-December. Don’t want shops? Then you will enjoy fishing on the high seas and, of course, diving. The coral reefs of the Red Sea are beautiful without days off and holidays.

Already after December 20, a bright non-stop celebration begins: first the Catholic Christmas, then the New Year.

Luminous garlands envelop artificial fir trees and live palm trees. Carnival processions, concerts and various performances thunder on the streets of cities. Even on the beach, you are likely to meet the European Santa Claus. The hotels host parties, dinners and professional shows for adults and children.

Cuba

In the country of eternal summer, not every month is suitable for rest. But December and January are just perfect for relaxing on the white sand, diving, surfing or fishing:

  • The rainy season is over and the air has cooled to 26–28 degrees
  • Ocean water remains pleasant for swimming – 24 degrees
  • There are no winds in December, they can appear in January
  • Guava, mango, banana, citrus fruits ripen and flood local markets

The celebration of the New Year can be combined with a cultural program: see architecture, historical sights, museums. There are plenty of them in Cuba.

For Christmas and New Year the city streets are decorated with garlands and flags. This is done not only for tourists – locals also celebrate holidays. You will not find so many national songs and rum with orange juice anywhere else.

Cubans’ New Year’s Eve smoothly flows into the celebration of Liberation Day: on January 1, travelers become participants in parades, fairs and festivals in honor of this event, again indulging in unbridled fun.

Maldives

The Maldives is another zone of eternal summer, where you should definitely be on New Year’s Eve. There is no heat (maximum 30 degrees), there is no storm, and underwater visibility reaches 30 m. This fact is a magnet for divers who go to explore underwater caves and sunken ships, watch turtles and other reef inhabitants.

Maldivian beaches and overwater bungalows are the bounty tale everyone has heard of. The hotels are very diverse: you can choose options for families with children, young people and couples. It is perhaps difficult to find a person who would be dissatisfied with the fact that he chose the Maldives for the trip.

The islanders are mostly Muslim (no restrictions for guests), so there will be no Christmas events here. But they approach the organization of New Year’s celebrations with a soul. Programs are mainly concentrated in hotels, the focus depends on the type of hotel. But New Year’s decor, Santa Claus, contests, gifts and concerts are guaranteed for everyone.

After the party, don’t forget to rejuvenate your body in the famous Maldivian spas. Specialists in cosmetology and massage are accepted on the territory of hotels or in separate rooms. Having tried procedures with natural oils and elixirs, you will never forget them.

Turkey

Turkish resorts are filled with guests during the winter holidays. And it’s not scary that the sea is cool: it will be replaced by warm pools, traditional hammam and relaxing spa treatments. Istanbul and Ankara attract romantics who want to celebrate the New Year by walking along the old streets, admiring the fireworks, breathing in the atmosphere of the eastern city.

Despite the fact that the Turks are Muslims, they do their best to please European guests with the atmosphere of a fairy tale. In December, New Year’s fairs begin to work in cities, buildings and trees are decorated with flowers.

The winter holidays are in full swing: every nightclub, hotel and restaurant has something to offer. And the hotels seem to compete for the title of the best place to celebrate the New Year.

The holidays will be enough for the cultural program. For example, go see one of the ancient cities (Troy, Side, Ephesus). In summer it is hot for long excursions, and in December it is excellent.

Are you ready to face the Turkish winter? Then consider tours to ski resorts: for example, Uludag, Palandoken, Erciyes. Dozens of ways to entertain yourself and enchanting New Year’s shows are provided.

Mexico

New Year holidays coincide with the dry season in Mexico, when the air temperature does not exceed 30 degrees. Therefore, the verdict is unequivocal: it is worth going to combine relaxation on the beach and New Year’s Eve in an exotic and cheerful country.

The most popular tourist region is the Yucatan Peninsula, washed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Local beaches are legendary:

  • Coating – the finest coral sand that does not heat up even in the most extreme heat
  • Wide coastline shaded by coconut trees
  • Fantastic underwater world

Mexicans are very fond of holidays, noisy processions and festivals. December is generally a month full of events, mostly dedicated to various saints. The onset of the New Year is marked by fireworks and a grandiose carnival, for which the locals have been preparing costumes for months. Where, if not here, to feel the flavor and energy of the country.

When the carnival is over, book an excursion to one of the oldest Mayan or Aztec monuments. Contact with this culture can be as overwhelming as modern life in Mexico.

New Year tours to Mexico →

Margarita Island

Margarita Island is a paradise resort on the Caribbean coast. Located almost on the equator, it belongs to the territory of Venezuela. Europeans and Venezuelans themselves come here en masse to rest.

The geographical position of the resort guarantees the tourist a full-fledged summer in December: the air warms up to 30 degrees during the day (however, below 24 degrees here generally never happens).

More than 100 km of sandy beaches (some fresh water), ecological trails and hiking trails, water areas for swimming, scuba diving, boarding and fishing – all this is at your disposal during the winter holidays.

An inquisitive tourist will also visit forts, temples, national parks and a mysterious tropical labyrinth. Shopping is interesting, because Margarita Island is a free trade zone (duty free), which means that prices here are 20 percent lower. In addition, there are often sales in December.

The islanders, like the Russians, consider the New Year a family holiday: they decorate the house, buy gifts, make wishes at midnight, congratulate everyone around. Hotel guests receive a gala dinner, which often consists of traditional dishes (this is a good gastronomic experience).

After midnight, everyone takes to the streets and the noisy part of the celebration begins: fireworks, songs, colorful outfits, music and rum by the river. It will be fun and very unusual!

Tunisia

Tunisians love to celebrate the New Year. They do this by combining European traditions and Arabic charm. In the cities there will be Christmas trees in the lights, evening illumination, shows, dances and music. Hotels are also preparing a program for guests.

Moving to Punta Prima

If you are thinking of moving to Punta Prima, then you must read our expat interview with Laura of E-Style Estate Agents in Spain below:

Laura, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Punta Prima compared to other Costa Blanca towns?

In Punta Prima no matter if it is winter or summer time the people will always enjoy the restaurants and bars open all year around. Also not just that, there are many shops where you can get everything you need as well as banks, gym and popular commercial centre of Punta Marina. Most of our clients who are buying or selling homes say that Punta Prima is a perfect place to live, also there is a beautiful seaside with one small and another big sandy beach. Many people live here permanently, there is also a bus service going to the hospital, Torrevieja and La Zenia shopping centre.

Punta Prima has very well developed infrastructure, friendly and safe atmosphere, beautiful residential complexes, luxury villas and many new build properties which also shows how quick this area is growing.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

Not really, I think Punta Prima suits everybody who like Spanish lifestyle !

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

I would say that 40% Spanish and 60% foreigners.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I love to go on the seaside, there are two very nice restaurants with fantastic views and very good food, cocktail bar where you can enjoy great music and a nice drink with your friends or alone!

Piazza, Photo by E-Style

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

My favourite restaurant is PIAZZA II in the commercial centre of Punta Marina here you will have really amazing food, also very good value menu with a lot of dishes to choose from, MUST TRY!  Also, for a very good Italian pizza you can visit PICCOLINO. Another great restaurants for a very good meal are NAUTILUS and PUNTA PRIMA, situated on the beachside and with lovely terraces overlooking the sea. There are many other great restaurants for every taste!

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

There is a supermarket of Consum and big Carrefour. Also many other shops: post office, furniture and electrical appliances shops (JYSK and MILAR), currency exchange office, also 2 big Chinese shops where you can buy everything for your home and garden. All in a short walking distance. Dentists and doctors you can find nearby Punta Prima, hospital of Torrevieja is less than 5min by car. There is a veterinary clinic in the commercial centre.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Nearby Punta Prima you will have other popular areas such as Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Villamartin and many others, there is a national road of N332 connecting all of the areas so it is very easy to get everywhere.

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

There is a Norwegian school and few English schools (10-20min drive away from Punta Prima). I heard that the private schools are very good.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Definitely no.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

The prices little by little are going up.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

The time to buy is very good as the prices are still not too high. There are not many bank repossessions and very cheap properties but we always get bargain properties to list!

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

In Punta Prima are quite many urbanisations but the most popular one are:

–  Señorio de Punta Prima with its luxury complexes of La Entrada, Panorama Park, Parque Recoleta and La Recoleta. These complexes are ideal for the people who like mediterranean style. The complexes have only apartments, the community with tropical gardens, beautiful communal pools, 24 hours security, underground parking and a short walking distance to the beach and all amenities. Here many people live permanently and have as investment properties. In this complex the apartments have very high investment potential, the owners can earn really good money just from short term rentals.

– The new luxury complex of Sea Senses right in the front of the sea, fantastic community with the gym, playgrounds, several pools, jacuzzi, bar and spectacular sea views. This is for the people who like more modern style and again it is very high investment potential that can give really good money from the rentals.

– Rocio del mar, here the building are older and the prices much cheaper, you can get apartment with 2 or 3 beds, some are older style and some very nicely reformed. This is perfect for the people who want to come for a holiday and don´t want to spend too much money. The location is very good, near the beach and all the amenities. Some have communal pools as well and communal solariums overlooking the sea.

La Ciñuelica, Photo by E-Style

– On another side of N332 you will find one of the most popular urbanisations – La Ciñuelica. That is very large area with apartments, bungalows and townhouses. The complex is very well looked after and has beautiful communal areas with large pools, some have underground parking and storage rooms. This is mediterranean style, white houses popular among the foreigners and Spanish people.

– Las Villas, the complex located just behind our office in commercial centre of Punta Marina. Here you will find detached villas with lovely gardens. A great place for those who want to move here permanently.

– Mariblanca, urbanisation with beautiful yellow townhouses, green areas and wonderful pools. Most of the people live here all year around, quite difficult to get one for sale there and if we get gets sold very quickly!

How much are the typical property prices in Punta Prima for apartments, villas etc?

The apartments starts from 60. 000 EUR, townhouses from 95.000 EUR and villas from 140.000 EUR

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Punta Prima or surrounding area?

Simple advice, have a look at the urbanisations and see which one suits best. Each one has its character and style. We can always show around and helot the buyers to find the best one for them!

Hotels And Accommodation

There are lots of apartments and villas to rent in the Punta Prima area however if you are looking for a hotel consider the Torre Joven Hotel just off the roundabout on the main N-332 coastal road.

This hotel is also known as the Punta Prima Torrejoven Hotel. Located on the northern part of the Orihuela Costa, the Torrejoven Hotel in Punta Prima is a good option if you wish to stay in Punta Prima and is an alternative to a self-catering apartment or villa rental. Situated right beside the Punta Prima roundabout on the N-332 coast road between Torrevieja and Playa Flamenca, the Torrejoven Hotel is easy to reach and handy as a base for visiting this popular area.

One of the positives is that you don’t even need to consider Punta Prima car hire as you can get a quick and easy and inexpensive airport transfer to Punta Prima from either Alicante airport or Murcia airport which will dramatically reduce your holiday costs.

It has a swimming pool and sun terrace for enjoying the beautiful weather that Punta Prima experiences, though Punta Prima beach is not too far away, and within walking distance for visitors staying in the hotel. Also right beside the hotel is Punta Prima strip or bars, shops, banks and restaurants, and also Punta Marina commercial centre with even more choice of restaurants, retail and entertainment options (including a McDonalds).

A Short Guide to Punta Prima — ALONG DUSTY ROADS

Emily

spain, europe

Emily

spain, europe

Whether you’re planning to use Punta Prima as your base in Menorca or just visit for a beach day (or haven’t quite decided yet), our guide covers everything you need to plan ahead!

Back in 1980s, when tourism was beginning to take off in Menorca, one of the first resorts to appear was Punta Prima; its long stretch of soft white sand in a protected bay, the perfect spot for package holiday makers in search of sun.

Fast forward a few decades, and whilst the island’s vacation options have greatly increased, the small beach town of remains a solid choice for those looking for a base in the popular southeast corner. A 25-minute bus journey from the capital Mahón, and just a bit more from the airport, it’s well-connected but also just a walk or short drive to several other fantastic beaches.

Its vibe though is very much holiday-centric and tourist-focussed, catering particularly to families seeking a safe place to swim, good-value accommodation (as well as luxury villas), and various facilities on hand. There’s a big Jet2 resort and popular waterpark a 10-minute walk away as well (this either a push or pull factor, depending on what you’re looking for).

We actually picked it for our first few days of the summer month we spent in Menorca: we just needed somewhere affordable, conveniently located, close to an easily accessible beach, where we could rent a scooter and head out on our own, and come back to a few decent restaurants in the evening. It isn’t necessarily where we would choose again, but we’d actually describe it as one of the best ‘tourist zone’ towns you’ll find on the island.

In this guide we’ve shared everything you need to plan your day trip or stay in Punta Prima, including all the best things to do, our recommendations for where to stay, where to eat, transport connections, and general advice to make the most of your time here.

punta prima essentials

// Perfect for families

// Pleasant white sand beach with lifeguard

// Small resort town with shops and facilities in centre

// Quiet, holiday vibe

// Good transport connections to Mahón & the airport

Things to Do in Punta Prima

Hang out at Punta Prima Beach

Okay, you’re on holiday – advising you to go to the beach is perhaps a tad redundant but considering that’s where you’ll likely spend most of your time, but we have to mention it!

Despite having an abundance of white sandy beaches in Menorca, it’s important to be aware that you will not find them everywhere on the island; the vast majority lie exclusively on the south coast but are often quite difficult to access (for example Cala Macaralleta and Cala Mitjana).

Punta Prima one of the exceptions, being the most accessible, developed, white sand beach in this area of Menorca – a big reason for its popularity as a holiday base.

Unlike those more famous remote and rustic ones which require a decent walk along a dusty trail to reach and have zero facilities on them (part of the attraction), Punta Prima playa is very much a tourist-friendly beach. It’s clean (Blue Flag), the water’s perfect for swimming, there’s a lifeguard, shops and cafes behind it, and you can choose to rent a sun bed or lay your towel down.

Perfect for an easy, hassle-free beach day in Menorca.

Expect to pay €17-19 for two sun lounger beds and an umbrella (all day, until 7 pm), but lower prices can be negotiated after 3 pm. Follow the beach round to find a more secluded stretch in and around rocks.

Good To Know // For families, we should note that you can walk to the popular Splash Sur Waterpark (maps) from Punta Prima, but there’s also a free shuttle bus.

Visit Binibeca

Located around 5 kilometres from Punta Prima, Binbeca is a world away in terms of architecture and aesthetics; a picture perfect fisherman’s village based upon paintings by Francesc Poch Romeu. Completed in the 1970s, this collection of 165 unique properties with their uniform white-washed facades and wooden balconies are a magical – albeit touristic – place to explore.

You should require no more than a couple of hours to walk amongst the nooks and crannies of this labyrinthine village, but if you would like to extend your time consider staying for lunch at one of several restaurants or spending the afternoon at Cala Binibeca, a popular but pretty beach nearby.

We’ve seen several mentions online of a ‘mini train’ that runs between Punta Prima and Binibeca (€7 per person, round trip) during high season but this wasn’t in operation (thankfully) when we visited this summer. This is the sort of thing that we are glad doesn’t really exist very much in Menorca – should it start up again though, let us know in the comments.

For further information on Binibeca, including things not to miss, be sure to check out our guide to Binibeca.

Take a Day Trip to Mahón

Whether you’ve got your own transport or hop on the bus, taking a day trip to Mahón – the capital of Menorca – is an essential activity for anyone basing themselves in Punta Prima.

Begin the day with a stroll around the old town, pop into the fish market for a plate of pinxtos, visit a gin distillery, a museum and the city’s cathedral or simply take a slow boat around the harbour and have a glass of vermouth on the waterfront.

Buses run very regularly between Punta Prima and Mahon (Line 92, 25 minutes, €1.75 per person – see timetable here), but your proximity means it’s possible and not too expensive to grab a taxi if there’s a few of you.

We spent a few days in the city and have put together a complete guide on our favourite things to do in Mahon, so be sure to take a look before visiting.

Hire a Scooter and Explore Nearby Beaches

Whilst the bus network in Menorca is fairly good, the lack of a circular route around the island (by vehicle at least) means that visiting multiple beaches and calas by public transport can be super challenging and something we’d actually caution against.

A much better alternative (for those without a car), is to rent a scooter for a day or two. One of our fondest memories from our month on the island was whizzing along country roads on two wheels, the pair of us squeezed on to the back of a moped, the sense of freedom and of having a real summer adventure.

To rent in Punta Prima, you have two options: the Menorca-wide Autovalls or a small company by the name of Mister Bike Rental.

Autovalls | This is one of the biggest Menorca car hire companies; it’s also who we rented our car with. The difficulty with renting a scooter from them is lack of availability, with most of their stock being based at the airport. If you are able to book your scooter rental in advance (a few weeks, ideally), you can secure a day rate from as little as €25, with prices dropping to around €18 per day if taken for multiple days.

Alternatively, if you’re going to need a car for your holiday, then the best place is to look + book via Rentalcars.com, which has the best selection of local and international companies on the islands, and just pick it up at the airport.

Mister Bike Rental | A small company that specialises in bicycle tours and bicycle rental, they also have a few scooters to rent out. Unfortunately, as they operate in a bit of a sellers’ market: their prices are really quite inflated, charging €49 per day for the cheapest model. If you require the insurance (we absolutely recommend buying it), that’ll be an extra €19 per day. They do offer discounts for multi-day rentals, but still work out much more expensive than Valls.

Annoyingly, this is quite common with the small rental companies across the island, with some of the most expensive scooter rental rates we’ve seen anywhere in the world. If you plan in advance, you can find more options online which can deliver to you in town, but the reality is that you might only decide to do this as a spontaneous activity, so have to simply pay whatever the rate is in town.

Good To Know // Renting a bicycle and following a few set trails around Punta Prima is also a popular activity, but we didn’t have the time to do it (and also felt it was overpriced relative to the experience).

Plan // 7 Things To Know Before Hiring A Car in Menorca

Walk Part of the Camí di Cavalls

If you’re the sort that can only lie still in the sun for so long, feel the need to do a little exercise to make up for all the meals out, or just fancy spending some time at some of Menorca’s secret beaches, we can highly recommend strapping on a pair of solid shoes and hiking a small section of the Camí de Cavalls.

Tracing the entire circumference of the island, the Cami is a historical 185km trail that is thought to have existed since the 14th century. In the past, it connected locals, villages and allowed trade but nowadays is utilised by visitors and those living in Menorca for recreational purposes – namely hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.

Although some tourists visit the island with the sole intention of hiking the entire 185km, most (like us), choose to hike just one or two sections, often using it as a means to access many of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca.

From Punta Prima you can access Sections 18 + 19 of the route:

Option One | Head east towards Cala San Esteve. This route is 7.3 kilometres, taking around two and a half hours. Should you go there and back, you’ll need to double both distance and time. Alternatively, you could choose to hike pretty little Cala Alcuafar and only, which would make it a 6 kilometre round trip. The trail begins here, near the pharmacy.

Option Two | Head west along Section 18 to Binissafuller (one of our favourite calas on the island). This route is 8. 1 kilometres each way, so allow at least five hours to make it there and back. The trail begins here. Do note that this particular section of the trail is much more residential, rather than wild or rural so if you’re looking for an nature-based experience, we’d consider an alternative.

Good To Know // If you’re a runner, then you can also follow these routes as well as coastal roads from Punta Prima for a decent route. Just set off early in the morning or after 4 pm in summer months.

Where to Stay in Punta Prima

Hotels

Insotel Punta Prima Prestige Suites & Spa | The beach town’s premier 5* offering, just 350 yards from beach. Top notch facilities, the rooms are large, modern and to a high standard (they also have a small kitchenette). Three on-site restaurants and extensive sports activities offered. Find out more here.

Note that the same company also offers a family-friendly hotel, which is also 5-star.

Occidental Hotel | An excellent hotel suitable for families with five large outdoor pools and a water park. Rooms are modern, clean and well-appointed (if a tad on the cheap side). Excellent location in Punta Prima. Find out more here.

Self-Catering

Bimbolla Apartments | This is a cheap and cheerful self-catering complex that, when between longer term rentals in Menorca, we returned to twice. The small apartments are very basic and lacking love but have all necessary amenities, decent sized terraces/balconies and a pretty nice pool area as well as breakfast included. If you’re on a budget, we’d definitely recommend taking a look. Find out more here.

Apartamentos Punta Prima Beach | Another excellent value option, especially if you prefer smaller resorts. The apartments are large and bright and tastefully furnished. If you can stretch to it, we’d recommend opting for one of the sea view apartments for views out over the water! Find out more here.

Villas & Private Apartments

As we discussed in our article ‘23 Things to Know Before You Visit Menorca’, touristic rentals of residential properties are severely restricted across the island, meaning that Airbnb does not exist in quite the same way; you will not find countless small one-bedroom apartments on the site, as these are all being lived in by locals.

Therefore, the below properties tend to cater for larger groups, and hit a higher price point. Additionally, please note that any prices quoted in description may be higher in months of July and August.

Rustic House by the Sea | One of the few places that feels more like a stylish home rather than a holiday villa, this three bedroom may also cater for couples that want a bit of extra space. No pool but charming outdoor area. From £84 a night. Find out more here.

Stunning Modern Villa | If you’re looking for a beautifully designed, high-spec villa with a pool that caters for large groups (up to 10 people), you should absolutely take a look at this one – breathtaking! From £420 a night. Find out more here.

Dream House | Alternatively, this magnificent modern four bedroom property with views over the ocean (located five mins from Punta Prima and therefore offering slightly more privacy) is also an excellent option – especially if you want to stay for less than a week, with no nightly minimum. It deserves its rave reviews. From £463 a night. Find out more here.

Voramar Waterfront | Whilst the decor inside may be a little old fashioned, the location of this three bedroom property is more than made up for with its location – right on the water’s edge! From £183 a night. Find out more here.

Caseta de sa Palmera | We spotted the outside of this pretty little villa in the centre of Punta Prima, and are delighted that it looks as cute inside as it does out! With a nautical theme throughout, the real highlight is the outside area which allows you to take just a couple of steps from the sun lounger into the sea. Magical! From £168 a night. Find out more here.

Villa Molly | Well priced for a large four bed, two story house (from £250 a night), this light, bright and spacious modern property has plenty of space and a large private pool. Find out more here.

Plan // If you’re still not sure where to base yourself on the island , then you should take a look at this post: Where To Stay in Menorca.

Recommendations for Punta Prima Restaurants

Largely located on the main commercial street, just behind the beach, you can turn up and see what takes your fancy, but note that reservations aren’t a bad idea in high summer season.

Chiringuito Aire | We had a fantastic meal in this modern, seafront restaurant. One of the fancier options in Punta Prima, they offer traditional Menrocan seafood specialities as well as more contemporary plates – their ceviche was excellent, as well as the zucchini carpaccio. A number of good vegetarian options too. Reservations essential. Find it here on the map.

La Oveja Negra | Located opposite the beach, this popular restaurant is fairly traditional with a wide-ranging menu specialising in seafood. Plenty of Spanish people when we ate there, which we took as a good sign! Find it here on the map.

Although we didn’t personally try them, two other restaurants with good reviews also include Casa Fermin and Restaurante sa Tramuntana. There’s also the slightly hidden away La Golosa for pizza and ice-cream (maps)

How to Get to Punta Prima

All flights into arrive into Menorca airport, the only airport on the island, located 14 km from Punta Prima. In order to reach your accommodation, you have have three options:

// Rental Car

If your priority is relaxing on a lounger next to the pool or a towel at the beach rather than exploring too far beyond your hotel, then we appreciate that renting a car may not make much sense. For us however, having our own vehicle to explore the island was essential, and makes getting to and from the airport a little simpler – with a journey time from the car pick up point to Punta Prima just twenty minutes.

We recommend looking + booking via Rentalcars.com as it has the best selection of local and international companies on the island, and often has discounts and deals.

We’ve written much more about car hire in Menorca, so if it’s something you are considering doing, we highly recommend giving this guide a read first.

// Taxi

Taxis outside Menorca airport are plentiful, and with a fixed rate depending on your final destination you needn’t worry about over-paying nor the meter.

The standard fee to Punta Prima is €22.71, plus €0.60 per piece of luggage.

Journey time is around 20 minutes.

// Bus

Accessing Punta Prima by bus does require a transfer, but is very straight forward.

First you’ll need to hop on one of the regular buses from the airport to Mahon bus station (Line 10). These leave every 30 minutes from the single bus stop located outside arrivals. Tickets cost €2.75 per person from the driver, and the journey time is around 15 minutes.

Once at the bus station, you’ll need to change onto bus number 92 (Punta Prima via Sant Luis). These depart every 30 minutes in the summer months and hourly in low season. Again, tickets are bought directly from the driver. The journey takes 25 minutes and costs €1.75 per person. See schedules here.

To travel from Punta Prima to Mahón, you can find the bus stop here, opposite the large car park.

Plan // To find out more about how the bus network operates, read 23 Things To Know Before You Visit Menorca.

Punta Prima Travel Tips

// Groceries

There are two small supermarkets (both on the pedestrianised road opposite the beach) in Punta Prima which have most things beach snackers and self-caterers will require. However do note that you will pay significantly more for groceries here than you would in one of the larger supermarkets outside Mahón.

If you’re based here for a week and plan on doing on doing a lot of cooking, we’d recommend heading to either Mahón or Sant Luis to do a big shop at the beginning of your holiday. Of course, this may only be possible if you have access to a rental car, or are happy using a taxi.

// ATMs

The good news is that there is an ATM in Punta Prima. The bad news? It’s one of Euronet’s. If you haven’t seen one of our rants about this company previously, suffice as to say we recommend avoiding at all costs due to the hideously unfair exchange rates they use to calculate the money you withdraw. If you need cash in an emergency, you can find the ATM here.

// Car Rental Agency

As we mentioned above when speaking about scooter rental, AutoValls (one of Menorca’s biggest car hire companies) has an office in Punta Prima from which you are able to pick up a rental car should you choose.

You can find the office here, but it is advised to book your vehicle in advance of your holiday if you’re not picking up from the airport. Otherwise availability is very poor in these satellite offices and rates can be much higher than you expect.

Alternatively, you can take the bus into the airport and get a cheaper deal. We recommend looking + booking via Rentalcars.com as it has the best selection of local and international companies on the island, and often has discounts and deals.

Before booking anything though, we recommend reading 7 Things To Know Before You Hire A Car In Menorca.

// Nightlife

If you’re content with a glass of wine on your balcony, a restaurant meal or a quiet drink in your hotel bar, nightlife probably won’t be too much of a concern. For younger couples or groups on holiday, it’s important to note that there really is no nightlife or indeed bars to visit in Punta Prima (there is one bar Carrer Mestral, but it’s not anything to get excited about).

// Other Things to Note

There is a tabac here, a pharmacy on the main seafront street here and a 24-hour doctor here.

Apartments in Punta Prima

Have you decided to buy an apartment on the Costa Blanca, but have not yet decided on the area? E-Style is pleased to introduce you to the prestigious and comfortable resort of Punta Prima Torrevieja in the south of the coast. Why Punta Prima?

Beaches

Punta Prima is a well-maintained modern area with beautiful beaches that have been awarded several blue flags for cleanliness and environmental friendliness. The two main beaches of Punta Prima – Cala Piteras (Torrevieja) and Playa Punta Prima (Orihuela Costa) – are great places to relax and enjoy the azure sea. Nearby is a promenade, several excellent restaurants, cozy cafes and bars.

How to get there?

Punta Prima is located between the cities of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. Excellent bus service, as well as modern highways guarantee ease and speed of communication with major centers: Alicante, Murcia, Cartagena. The two international airports of San Javier and Alicante are only 40 minutes away.

What can you do?

Punta Prima offers a wide range of leisure activities, from European and Asian restaurants to an award-winning gym and spa. The Punta Marina shopping center also has a large range of shops, a supermarket, a pharmacy, restaurants and the head office of our E-Style agency.

While in Punta Prima, you can’t miss the wonderful Dynasty restaurant, which is built like a Pagoda, surrounded by a garden with a pond and hundreds of light bulbs. Everything that you may miss in Punta Prima, you will undoubtedly find in Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa – water parks, golf courses, boutiques of leading brands of clothing, discos, casinos, theater and much more. Our staff will be happy to be your guides in Punta Prima and the surrounding area!

Which apartment is better to choose?

We convinced you of the Punta Prima area, didn’t we? So which apartments are better to choose?

Buying an apartment in Punta Prima is not difficult at all. The E-Style company will help you with the purchase of apartments by the sea, because today it is a reality, not a dream, to buy an inexpensive apartment or a luxury penthouse in Punta Prima!

Apartments in Spain “Apartamentos” (as opposed to the Russian concept) are apartments in the resort areas of Spain, mainly used for summer holidays on the coast. Often apartment owners subsequently rent out their apartments in Spain to tourists from Europe.

When deciding to buy an apartment in Punta Prima, be sure to consider this type of Spanish property as a penthouse. Penthouse “Atico” is an apartment on the top floor with a large terrace or private solarium. Penthouses are always more expensive, because, firstly, there are no neighbors upstairs. And secondly, as a rule, penthouses in Punta Prima have panoramic sea views, and such apartments in Spain are always in price, regardless of the general market situation.

If you want to buy a bungalow in Punta Prima, you should know that “Bungalow” refers to apartments on the ground floor with their own small plot and separate entrance, or vice versa, apartments with a solarium on the top floor. As a rule, such bungalows are located within walking distance to the beach (maximum – 1-2 km), residential complexes are equipped with swimming pools and green areas.

Developer apartments or second homes?

You have decided to buy an apartment in Punta Prima and are considering buying an apartment from a developer. What are the benefits of buying a new home?

Firstly, prices for housing objects from developers are often lower than for second-hand apartments.

Secondly, the indisputable advantage is that you will be the first owner, no one lived in the apartment before you!

The third important aspect: developers are improving the quality of residential construction every year, so your new modern apartments will be equipped according to the most modern European standards, equipped with household appliances, often with a “smart home” system and even high-quality furniture! E-Style works with the best construction companies on the Costa Blanca.

And one more argument in favor of buying a new home: you can buy apartments from the developer while still under construction. This makes it possible to save up to 10% of the cost, since by the time of delivery this property will be sold at a different, higher price.

We will be happy to offer you the most advantageous options for apartments on the beaches of Punta Prima directly from leading developers.

Rentals in Punta Prima

Our company has a wide range of apartments and flats for sale, as well as excellent rental options for your summer holidays. After all, it is not at all necessary to buy an apartment, you can rent cozy apartments at a bargain price both in the midst of the summer season and in the calm warm winter months.

If you choose Punta Prima, you have made the right choice. E-Style will help you find an apartment in Punta Prima according to all your wishes.

Costa Blanca South

Costa Blanca Sur is located in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, in particular, between the cities of Alicante (in the north) and Pilar de la Horadada (on south).

South of the Costa Blanca South is the pearl of the Mediterranean and gets its name from the fantastic beaches of fine sand and clear waters that surround the most important municipalities of the coast, such as Santa Pola, Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa (Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor). Terrasun Group offers a wide range of properties where you can rent an apartment on the Costa Blanca at an incredible price. The climate in the south of the Costa Blanca, thanks to the salt marshes, is especially good, which is confirmed by the World Health Organization, which considers it one of the best in the world. True, this is a good reason to buy an apartment in Torrevieja or anywhere else on the Costa Blanca.

The Costa Blanca has over 320 days of sunshine and an average annual temperature of around 19.3ºC, resulting in a mild climate and mild winters that are ideal for both relaxing and living throughout the year. In addition, due to the salt lakes, the humidity in the area is much lower and creates an ideal microclimate, especially for people with rheumatic diseases.

For those who love to spend all day on the beach, the south of the Costa Blanca boasts excellent quality beaches, as well as endless miles of coastline with Blue Flag awarded beaches and coves of fine sand. An unmistakable symbol of clean and pure water. Magnificent golf courses and multicultural villages with ever-evolving infrastructure make the south of the province of Alicante a place to live. If you want to rent an apartment on the Costa Blanca, Terrasun will make it easy for you.

Gastronomy lovers can meet on the Costa Blanca, where the most common ingredient is rice, which is cooked in different ways: in the famous paella, cauldron or ollette. The fish and seafood, as well as the fruits and vegetables of this land, are part of the excellent cuisine of Alicante. Do you know any other lifestyle Costa Blanca

Five people were killed by landslides and flash floods caused by heavy rainfall in the Canary Islands.

The water rises so high that it reaches traffic lights, blowing cars away, flooding houses and trees. 30 people have been taken to hospitals, which are also experiencing power outages.

The mayor of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Miguel Cerolo, said that among the dead is a young girl crushed by a collapsed wall. Thousands of people after the Easter holidays cannot get home because of the flood. Many of them spent the night in temporary centers. About 50 thousand people are deprived of electricity. It is not yet clear whether the flooding has reached the main zone of hotels on the island of Tenerife, a popular Spanish resort off the northwest coast of Africa. nine0003

We would like to remind you that this is not the first time that a natural disaster caused by weather conditions has occurred in the Canary Islands. So, in July last year, a powerful forest fire raged on the islands, which arose on the hills of one of the islands of the archipelago and quickly spread due to high temperatures and strong winds. As a result, the fire burned about 3 thousand hectares, and it was possible to extinguish it only with the help of fire helicopters.

5 secrets only locals in Tenerife know about

Updated 4 March 2020 | by Leanne Capuano

As the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Tenerife is known for its idyllic island beauty; a sun-drenched paradise of white sandy beaches, gently swaying palms and sparkling turquoise waters. Attracting around 10 million holidaymakers every year, Tenerife has long been a popular tourist destination, but take a step away from the crowded coastline of busy bars and sunbathing Brits, and you’ll discover an island steeped in rich history with a colourful carnival of culture. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite things to do, to help you explore island life in style.

Street art is becoming a staple in modern urban culture and many artists have taken to the streets of Tenerife to create colour-popping, modernist works of art. KOB, a well-known street artist started to create colourful works of art in his hometown of Puerto de la Cruz, in 1999, like the ROA mural, which he created as part of the Puerto Street Art Festival, in September 2014. Other artists have chosen Tenerife as a canvas for their urban works of art, including Victor Ash who created the La Frontera del Paraíso, on Calle Mequinez in Puerto de la Cruz, which depicts a sunset scene with silhouettes of people as chain links on a fence, and Ypsilon a mural by Feo Flip, which depicts a striking painting with sweeping feathers that reflects a dehumanized society of technological change.

Carnivals are a big part of Tenerife’s culture. The annual Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second most popular in the world, next to the Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Tenerife has at least 14 public holidays a year, so there is a high chance you’ll find yourself on the island at some point during the festivities. Each celebration is a feast for the eyes and with free-flowing drinks, local culinary delights and fun, energetic music you’ll soon find yourself lost in Tenerife’s fun-loving lifestyle.

To understand Tenerife’s unique culture it’s best to look at their love of the theatre. The locals take great pride in their performances, especially at the Auditorio de Tenerife. The magnificent building was designed by Spanish Architect  Santiago Calatrava, who poured his heart and soul into building an opera house that would stage some of the finest performances the island has to offer.

Tenerife is home to some natural wonders including towering mountain ranges and crystal clear waters. But, the Cueva del Viento-Sobrado caves are a site that shouldn’t be missed. They are the longest in Europe and the fifth largest in the world, each cave was formed by molten lava from Pico Viejo, a volcanic cone located alongside Mount Teide. The winding tunnels span 17 km (10 miles) so take care you don’t get lost, who knows how long it will take to find you.

It’s no secret that the majority of Spain enjoys tapas and no trip would be complete without the mouthwatering delights of the local cuisine. Tenerife has some of the most delicious tapas for you to try, including papas arrugadas, – which translates to the wrinkled potato, but don’t be fooled by the title –  these little potatoes are delicious and served in a spicy chilli sauce. The Canary Islands are famous for adding a little sweetness to their meals and the locals are proud of their flavoursome food, they know just how to cook their tapas to perfection.

Tenerife offers the curious holidaymaker so much to see and if you look beyond the crystal clear waters and sandy, white beaches you’ll find a culture filled with vibrancy and colour, just asking to be explored. Find your perfect villa in Tenerife today!

10 ways to tell if you’ve gone local on Tenerife

Some articles about Brexit in the UK press have featured the views of expats, usually in Spain and mainly those who live in or near popular holiday resorts. One in A Place in the Sun magazine focused on Playa de las Américas on Tenerife whilst another in The Guardian concentrated on Alicante, specifically an area described as a ‘British enclave’.

Generally these types of article feature people who haven’t made much of an attempt to adjust to the rhythm of the place they’ve set up home, instead recreating a sunnier and warmer version of the world they’ve left behind.

Sticking with the familiar rather than dipping nervous toes into a different cultural scene is all too easy. None of us feel comfortable stepping out of our… well comfort zones.

But for all those who make no effort at all to integrate or try a different way of doing things, there are plenty of incomers and people who visit Tenerife on a regular basis who do; either going the whole hog, or adjusting to some aspects of a different way of local life.

These are ten ways to tell if you’ve gone seriously local on Tenerife.

Roundabout etiquette

If you never, ever venture into the inside lane of roundabouts then you’ve definitely picked up local driving habits, albeit not good ones. In truth, it’s one you have to learn early in order to survive and not be destined to spend the rest of eternity driving around a small circle. The really annoying thing is do it right and you’ll be rewarded with angry gestures and the honking of car horns.

Become a night owl

Outside of resort areas anyone who wants to enjoy the best of the local after dark scene in bigger towns shouldn’t dream of going to a bar until at least 11pm, and preferably after midnight. Some towns on Tenerife are labelled as not having lively nightlife by people who haven’t followed this rule. Actually it’s not just in bigger towns. In the cave hamlet of Chinamada not so long ago I saw a poster advertising a fiesta dance there, starting at 11.30pm.

Stick to the shadows

A sure sign of someone who’s gone local is instead of seeking the sun they avoid it, walking on the shady side of the street or sitting at tables in the shade outside bars and restaurants.

Dropping S from words

Instead of asking for ‘dos cervezas’ and answering ‘gracias’ when they’re handed over, ordering ‘daw cervezas’ and answering ‘graciah’ shows you’ve picked up the local habit of dropping the S from the ends of some words. It works nicely on the Canary Islands, but next time you’re on mainland Spain you might get some odd looks. We were once told off for not speaking ‘properly’ when we did it in front of a Spanish mainlander.

Sunbathe anywhere

Sun loungers are for Northern European visitors. You can tell when holiday seasons change on Tenerife just by looking at how people sunbathe on beaches like Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz. In winter months the sunbeds are full. In summer when the Spanish arrive and more Canarios head to the beach, the sunbeds are empty and the sand near the water’s edge is rammed with people. The real test whether you’ve gone local is if you’re happy to sunbathe lying on pebbles, rocks or even slabs of concrete.

Supermarket dash

This is one for anyone who truly wants to embrace local habits. Don’t finish your supermarket shopping and then join a queue. Leave your trolley in a queue at the tills when you’ve still got lots of stuff to buy. Then return at regular intervals to make sure nobody who has actually completed their shopping has jumped the queue by pushing in front of your ‘abandoned’ trolley.

Dine late

People who eat dinner in a Tenerife restaurant at 5/6/7pm are more likely to encounter locals still finishing lunch than locals eating dinner. Even 8.30pm is borderline too early. Eat late for an authentic dining experience. Tripadvisor is full of reviews where visitors have commented a restaurant has no atmosphere… because they’ve eaten outside local dining times.

Hold a complete conversation using two words

If you ever get to the point where you’ve held a decent length conversation in Spanish using only ‘si’ and ‘vale’ then you have seriously gone local. Even if those are the only two Spanish words you know you can get away with sounding fluent as long as you follow these instructions. When a Canario speaks to you, respond with “si, si, si… vale, vale… si, si, si” wait till the person you’re speaking to says something else, then repeat. And so on. It works a treat.

Finding a prime spot to watch fiesta parades

This one is advance level. If you can roll up for a fiesta parade a few minutes before it starts and mysteriously manoeuvre your way into a prime spot, usually in front of some unsuspecting visitor who isn’t even aware you’ve done it, then congratulations, you’ve achieved grand master of Canarian ninja techniques.

Wear winter clothes in summer temps

It doesn’t matter if it’s 24C in the shade and most visitors are wearing tee-shirts and shorts, it’s November and in November if you want to follow the local ways you change to winter fashion no matter what the temperature is. From that point you continue to go out wearing woolly jumpers and boots until it is officially spring.

If there’s anyone out there who can tick off these 10 then kudos, you’ve embraced going local on Tenerife with an enthusiastic bear hug. You’re more local than many locals.

As for us, we do some of these on a regular basis, others only now and again. But there are still three we’ve never actually managed to achieve.

Canary Islands: Tenerife island

The total area of Tenerife is 2057 square kilometers. The population of the island has more than 800 thousand inhabitants. In addition to the size of the territory and population, Tenerife is the leader among the Canary Islands in terms of population density. Tenerife is located on the territory of the zero time zone (the difference with Moscow time is three hours). The island has two international airports (north and south). Direct air flights depart regularly from the Russian capital in Tenerife. nine0003

With a population of just over 800,000, Tenerife welcomes up to three million tourists a year. This figure clearly indicates that the island is one of the most popular Atlantic resorts. In addition to the tourism business, some types of agriculture are developed in Tenerife. Many locals are employed in the banana industry and viticulture. Among the crops that bring income to the island as an export, tomatoes can also be distinguished.

History

In ancient times, as well as in the early Middle Ages, the island was inhabited by the Guanches, who gave it its modern name. Guanches were distinguished by physical strength and endurance. Their main occupations were agriculture, cattle breeding and fishing. In the 15th century, the Spaniards began their conquest of the Canary Islands. Tenerife was no exception and soon became a Spanish colony. The conquistadors did not stand on ceremony with the local population, so it is not surprising that the descendants of the Guanches were actually completely exterminated. nine0003

Somewhat later, the island becomes a full-fledged province, which is part of the mighty Spanish Empire. It is noteworthy that it was in the battles for Tenerife that the legendary English Admiral Horatio Nelson lost his right hand. In general, the island has repeatedly become a direct participant in significant historical events. Through Tenerife passed the route of the first Russian circumnavigation under the leadership of Ivan Kruzenshtern and Yuri Lisyansky (1803-1806). Here, during the implementation of the circumnavigation (1831-1836), the then little-known naturalist Charles Darwin landed. In 1866, the outstanding traveler Nikolai Nikolaevich Maklukho-Maclay visited the island. nine0003

Tenerife became a major tourist destination in the 1950s. It was during this period of time that state and private hotels began to be built at a high pace here. The real tourist boom began in the 70s of the last century after the death of Generalissimo Francisco Franco.

Climate

The weather conditions in Tenerife are virtually the same as in other Canary Islands. As in other parts of the archipelago, eternal summer reigns here and the beach season is open all year round. The magnificence of the conditions for recreation is emphasized by the fact that the island does not actually experience excessive heat. A comfortable temperature is maintained here for twelve months. The average temperature of the summer months is 26-28 degrees Celsius. The temperature of the winter months is kept around the mark of 21 degrees. The water temperature in the sea throughout the year does not fall below twenty degrees. The vast majority of days in Tenerife are sunny. Precipitation on the island is extremely rare. nine0003

Sights and excursions

In addition to white sandy beaches, Tenerife has a lot of historical, cultural and natural monuments, which are under close attention of tourists from all over the world throughout the year. Local attractions, along with the picturesque coast, no doubt, make up the glory of the island of Tenerife.

Among the island’s most popular attractions are the pyramids of Guimar. Six stone stepped structures became known to the whole world thanks to the traveler Thor Heyerdahl. It was he who stated that the cobblestones could not have been stacked so systematically without any intent. The famous Norwegian could not develop his theory, however, with his support, an ethnological park with an area of over 60 thousand square meters was equipped around the pyramids. Today, this complex is dedicated not so much to the pyramids themselves, but to the tireless Thor Heyerdahl. nine0003

Speaking of the island of Tenerife, it is simply impossible not to mention the Teide volcano, which is the highest point in Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. The absolute height of Teide is 3718 meters, the height above the ocean floor is 7.5 thousand meters. On the territory adjacent to the volcano, there is a spacious national park. Another landmark of the island is the Royal Basilica of Candelaria. The Catholic Church, consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Candelaria, the patroness of the archipelago), is the largest religious building in the Canary Islands. The temple was erected in the middle of the twentieth century on the site of a church with the same name, which stood here for more than two centuries and was destroyed by fire in 1789. year.

The symbol of the island, as well as of the entire Canary archipelago, without a doubt, is the Auditorio de Tenerife opera, built in 2003. This building is rightfully considered one of the most unusual and significant architectural masterpieces of our time. Thanks to its original shape, the Auditorio de Tenerife Opera is one of the most recognizable buildings in Spain.

Among the excursions for visitors to the island of Tenerife, it is worth highlighting the following: sightseeing tour of the island; excursion to the northern regions of the island – the village of Taganana, the relic forest of Mercedes, the Anaga mountain range and the old capital of Tenerife – the town of La Laguna; excursion to Loro Park with a huge collection of birds and animals, as well as the largest dolphinarium and penguinarium; plane excursion over the Canary archipelago, etc.

Infrastructure and transport

The main economic and administrative center of the island is its capital, the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On its territory you can find a number of comfortable hotels of various categories, as well as a variety of entertainment venues. In addition, the city has a seaport with an extensive berth for private yachts.

Playa de las Americas-Los Cristianos should be recognized as the tourist center of the island. Here is the Octopus water park with a large number of exciting water rides. Along the city coast, a real entertainment village stretched out with hotels, clubs, discos, restaurants, etc. nine0003

In terms of transport, Tenerife is represented by the state-of-the-art TITSA bus network. There is also a tram line on the island. At the moment, a project to lay a railway track connecting Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the southern part of the island is stuck at the development stage. Communication between Tenerife and other points of the Canary archipelago is carried out by ferries and flights.

Prices for tours

The range of prices for tours “Moscow – Tenerife” is quite high. If you are interested in a week-long vacation for two persons in a four-star hotel, then its cost (depending on the hotel, area and season) will range from two to four thousand dollars. The least expensive trips to Tenerife can be purchased in the fall, while the most expensive trips to Tenerife are available in the summer and on New Year’s holidays. nine0003

Beautiful beaches on the island of La Palma – tours and holidays in Spain

The island of La Palma is famous throughout the world for its beaches. This is the merit of the volcanic sand of which they are composed. But, do not be afraid, because the sand is absolutely safe for health and, in addition, it is very clean. The beaches on the island are small in size and near each you can have mercy on the crystal clear waters of the ocean. If you are no longer interested in the golden sands of other resorts, and you want innovation, then when buying trips to Spain, go on vacation to La Palma.

“Los Nogales”

Like the others, this beach fascinates with its beauty. The beach is located on the territory of the Puntallana region and its basis is crushed volcanic sand. You can easily come to the beach on foot along a special slope. But you should be careful, because this beach has dangerous currents. It is best used as an outdoor solarium.

Puerto Naos

This beach is one of the most popular among the tourist community. Here you can lie down in the shade of coconut trees, as well as take advantage of the showers, which always have only fresh water. The amenities of the beach include special changing rooms, bars, kiosks and restaurants.

“Las Monjas”

It is the only one of its kind, since it is officially intended for naturists on the island. To get to it, you should walk half a kilometer from the Puerto Naos area in the direction of the south (El Remo side). Also on its territory is a beautiful bay.

“Charco Verde”

This beach is a little further than the previous one and it is located at a distance of 2 kilometers from the Puerto Naos area (also towards El Remo). If you don’t want to go far, then book a car rental in Spain and go to the beach with your own vehicle. This place is most popular among fishing enthusiasts.

“Fuencaliente”

This beach is different from the rest, because its earthen cover is small pebbles. It is located near the lighthouse. Also near the beach there is a cafe where you can try fish and paey. It’s best to dine on Sundays.

“La Fajana”

La Fajana beach is a pool of sea water. On its territory there is a restaurant with an amazing menu.

Did you know?

That due to our special relationships, our resorts offer us the best packages available.

Canary Islands

Enjoy an unforgettable holiday in Tenerife.

A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Hotel Bahía del Duque is a lavish beachfront village-style family resort in Tenerife’s Costa Adeje region.

Nestled amongst tropical gardens on a hillside, the hotel is grand and luxurious, with a pretty, pastel-coloured exterior that is clearly influenced by Venetian splendour and colonial Canary Island style, and an interior that evokes Baroque and Moroccan design.

Set a stone’s throw from the magnificent El Duque beach, guests can choose to stay in one of three glorious areas of the resort. Casas Ducales is an exclusive area of the hotel that is separate to the main building. This colonial-style estate is attended by a butler and VIP amenities and services include a private solarium with complimentary drinks and canapés. Las Villas offers further exclusivity and privacy – these three exquisite villas boast private heated infinity pools and Champagne receptions. All accommodation at Bahia del Duque features mesmerising ocean views.

There are five fresh and saltwater pools dotted around the hotel’s ground, which lead down to an 800-metre stretch of cashmere-soft beach, alongside a sun-kissed promenade awash with restaurants, cafes and shops. Scuba-diving is popular in southern Tenerife – head to Moana Diving Padi dive centre for more information on exploring the warm waters.

There is also an award-winning spa, two children’s clubs, eight restaurants and 12 lounges. The service at the hotel is impeccable and the facilities endless.

Keen golfers will be pleased that there are five outstanding golf courses in close proximity to the hotel, including Gold del Sur, Golf Costa Adeje and Golf Las Americas. Bahía del Duque has a 9-hole pitch-and-putt onsite – but you must have a handicap certificate in order to play.

Highlights

Discover what makes this resort special. Here are our personal highlights.

Bahia del Duque boasts eight restaurants and 12 lounges, featuring exquisite international, Italian, Japanese, French, Basque and Canarian cuisine. The culinary highlight has to be La Brasserie, led by Belgian chef Pierre Résimont, whose restaurant in Belgium has been endorsed with two Michelin stars. Enjoy local and seasonal produce and fine French wines.

The award-winning Bahia del Duque Spa has indoor and outdoor spaces that create a tranquil oasis. Enjoy the unique open-air Thalassotherapy circuit or an award-winning treatment or ritual, using luxury L’Occitane products.

Bahia del Duque is family-friendly, not only offering family suites and dedicated children’s menus, but two children’s clubs to keep them entertained on holiday. The Mini Club hosts fun and educational activities for 3-12-year-olds and the Teenagers’ Lounge is a chilled-out sanctuary featuring board games, computer games and much more.

Golf Courses

There are five golf courses in the area surrounding Bahia Del Duque, and the hotel can offer preferential rates at several courses including Golf Las Americas, Golf del Sur and Golf Costa Adeje. Next to Las Villas Bahia Del Duque there is a 9-hole medium difficulty pitch and putt. Please note this is an extra charge and only accepts players with a handicap certificate.

Offering panoramic views of the coastline and mountains, Golf Las Americas is a leisurely course with a few challenges, including water and sand hazards and gently sloping fairways. An ideal course for golfers of all abilities to enjoy, the 18-hole, par 72 parkland course boasts an excellent clubhouse overlooking the 18th fairway and superb practice facilities.

Golf del Sur is the only 27-hole championship course in Tenerife, and features three unique individual courses – the A “Links” course, B “North” course and C “South” course. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, although the course looks flat, you should be careful of the wind, strategic lakes, bunkers and tricky borrows on the greens. The course is beautiful, boasting black volcanic sand in bunkers and lush palm trees and giant cacti. The par 5 3rd hole is particularly memorable as it is especially challenging.

With stunning coastal views and remnants of old agricultural stone walls throughout, this course, designed by Pepe Gancedo, is a must-play course on a golf break in Tenerife. The 18-hole, par 72 Old Course features several blind doglegs and large greens, which are heavily guarded by water and sand, constantly threatening to swallow up your ball and disadvantage your score. We must warn you not to let the phenomenal vista of La Gomera, the Adeje mountains and the sea put you off your game.

Excellent hotel, perhaps one of the best on the island. Good main restaurant, very tasty and good service in a la carte restaurants. It overlooks the beautiful Del Duc beach. It’s better not to take valuables there, leave them in hotels on sun loungers, and on the beaches only with your own towels))) you can rent a car in hotels and ride around the sights of the island. A beautiful lake in the territory where you can feed ducks, geese and swans Thank you very much, we all really enjoyed it)))

to share your impressions of a holiday on the beautiful island of Tenerife. Briefly about the advantages of the island itself: a wonderful climate, we rested in July, in my opinion, the most comfortable time for swimming in the Atlantic. Now about the hotel: 1) Location. The hotel has a really good location, there is where to walk, a shopping complex is a 5-minute walk, a 10-minute taxi ride and you are in Siam Park. There are two options on the coast at once, one of which is with black volcanic sand. 2) Accommodation. The hotel turned 25 last year, but this does not prevent it from looking worthy! Most of the rooms have been renovated. The rooms are small, rather modest and cozy, made in the Spanish style. I advise you to take rooms with an entrance so that you can lose a cup and sunbathe coffee on your own balcony. The standard rooms either do not have a balcony, or they are rather conditional. 3) Nutrition. I recommend taking half board (breakfast + dinner), as decent food and this type of food includes a free visit to A la cart, except for Japanese, by the way, a Michelin star. I can’t call the breakfast varied, but the products are all very high quality. I advise you to visit Italian and French restaurants, the latter is atmospheric. Water is provided free of charge on site, which is typical for hotels of this level. 4) Beach. The hotel does not have its own benefit, since in Spain they are almost all municipal. This fact does not interfere with the hotel. There is a special area for sunbathing, where sunbeds and cabanas are placed, next to it is a gate through which you immediately get to Playa del Duque beach, 20 meters away is the ocean. If you walk along the coast, then in 200 meters the beach smoothly embraces black volcanic sand. 5) Entertainment. You need to understand that the hotel is focused on the attention of 40+, live music in the evenings, acrobats came during our arrival. Rest requires complete relaxation: silence and birdsong. To sum up, I recommend this hotel for a visit!

Great hotel. Large, beautiful area, there is where to walk. Food in the main restaurant is very varied and for every taste. A la carte restaurants were also very good. True, in the mornings you can wait a long time for coffee / milk / juice and in the end not wait. Good shows in the evenings, especially enjoyed the flamenco evening. The beach of El Duc, which immediately arrives from the hotel, is perhaps the best in this part of the island. Of the minuses – very crowded and it is better not to take valuables there. The hotel rooms are in excellent condition, it can be seen that renovations, furniture, plumbing have recently been made. Room cleaning is very decent and convenient for you time. In general, I liked it very much, but the restaurant staff needs to be smarter 🙂

Helpful staff, great location, close to one of the best beaches in Tenerife. Excellent varied breakfast. Almost all rooms have a great view of the ocean. nine0008

The only hotel during our honeymoon that did not compliment us as honeymooners (stayed in 4 different hotels). Very boring hotel, no animation, no evening programs. Mostly for people aged 50 and over. Restaurants on site leave a lot to be desired.

The room was cleaned very often, we don’t bother much about the “do not disturb” signs, and the staff at the entrance makes one warning knock and enters regardless of anything (and the latches don’t stop them :)). But it’s even funny. It was disappointing that this truly luxury hotel saves on water. The price of the room is appropriate, and the hotel shames itself with the fact that it issues additional penny bills for water (tea, water), let’s say so much profit, and it won’t make it, but the unpleasant aftertaste of greed remains. Be careful – all the water at dinner at HB is paid (not only alcohol, which is natural, but even tea and just water), while you are simply asked what you will drink (without offering a menu with prices), you say: “just vota” , and then you will have a small bill for it, but, given that the price was not agreed in advance, it can be anything. nine0008

Rather monotonous breakfasts. Red ants lived in the room with us. In the dressing room, in the bathroom and in the room. They took a special remedy from the maid, they treated everything with it – it became better. This is the trouble of all the rooms in the hotel!!! Wi-Fi worked very poorly. Even by the pool he took better than in the room!!! Since all the hotel restaurants are located by the pool and under the windows of the rooms, fried butter, fish and other food are served all over the hotel during lunch and dinner. This was an unpleasant surprise for this level of hotel. nine0008

Les rues de Paris – Nicolas Godin

It’s a personal thing – Las Americas

Following my personal view of what Los Cristianos is like as a resort, I am now moving on to Las Américas.  This is particularly difficult because while everyone seems to know it as the place that epitomises the south of Tenerife few know where it is actually located.  It is also getting harder as the years go by as it seems that Las Américas has shrunk as Costa Adeje has grown to the extent that some places that used to be Las Américas are now classed as Costa Adeje. Are you confused yet?  I don´t blame you but don´t worry you are certainly not alone.

The one thing we do know is that Las Américas starts just beyond Los Cristianos. I tend to think of it starting at the far end of Las Vistas beach and continuing on to Pueblo Canario, therefore, encompassing the sophisticated and cosmopolitan area around the Safari Centre and the party area of Veronicas.

This spot was almost completely deserted in the 1960s, but seeing the potential for tourism, from out of nowhere emerged Playa de Las Americas to become the most important tourist resorts on the island.  There is no denying it is purpose-built, but it is also one of Europe’s most successful tourist destinations. To some people, the resort conjures up images of all-night bars and the very worst excesses, is virtually free from anything Canarian – the place to come and party. That may have been true in the past but that doesn´t mean it is all bad.  So what is the Las Américas like that we see today?  PdlA (as it is known for short) has developed into a place that attracts families and middle-aged couples, including the most demanding of visitors. There is something for everyone whatever their taste whether it is international restaurants, stylish cocktail bars, or luxurious designer shopping it is all there and set against a landscape of great beauty.

PdlA is also the only place on the island that you can see authentic flamenco in a show that stands its ground alongside the best in the world. This is performed in one of Europe’s biggest auditoriums the spectacular Piramide de Arona by the world-famous Carmen Mota troupe. Once seen you will never again watch a pseudo dance show that hotels provide to convince the uninitiated they are getting a taste of the real Canaries.  In fact, flamenco is nothing to do with the Canary Islands, it comes from Andalucia and in particular Seville. Keeping up with the times, next door to this spectacular show is a Hard Rock Cafe.

The variety of hotels is vast and of exquisite taste. The big hotels are usually surrounded by exotic gardens, have large swimming pools or are near to beaches, but equally, the hotel and apartment structures are varied and there are always deals to be had for families with kids or those seeking a cheap getaway break. (as said something for everyone)

Thanks to the almost year-round sun the beaches are usually full of people eager for a good tan. I really don´t understand why some decry them for being man-made.  So what if they aren’t natural, lots of people prefer soft golden sand to sharp, gritty black sand but whatever your preferences PdlA has all types of beach from the imported sand of the Sahara to the natural volcanic sands and they are beautiful, clean, have mainly calm safe waters and offer a wealth of activities to enjoy a fantastic day.

To my mind, where PdlA triumphs over the other island resorts is that it is an eminent tourist destination, boasting a wide range of activities to suit all tastes and ages.  In recent years the main attraction has to be a visit to Siam Park – I know this is in Las Americas and not Costa Adeje as some believe because it is directly behind the Las Americas Bus Station and just to the side of the Las Americas Police Station. If you prefer out-of-water sports, Golf las Américas is proud to say it is situated in the “Heart of Playa de Las Américas”  Or you can simply enjoy a steady seaside stroll along the very long Paseo Marítimo, sampling the various watering holes along the way be they cheap and cheerful or chic and costly (well not really costly compared to what tourists are used to paying in the UK. The general consensus is eating and drinking in Tenerife is not expensive)

After dark, the resort really comes into its own, there are countless venues offering entertainment whether it is cabaret artists or karaoke and there is always a happy party atmosphere to be enjoyed by the young and the not so young.

Not to be forgotten is the island’s party capital Veronicas Strip and Starco, which is what most people think of when Las Américas is mentioned. It is a magnet for the teens and 20s due to the variety of discos, bars and booze. But not all of the venues are seedy, some like the Papagayo Beach Club are very upmarket and draw so-called ‘celebrities’ from both the UK and Spain to their terraces, they also attract a price tag to go with their stylish looks.

Despite Veronica’s reputation the area is very small, just 3 floors in 5 buildings spread over 200m but at night with neon lights flashing, PR men tempting the teens with cheap drinks and free shots it looks attractive. Bars stay open all night for drinking, dancing and having a wild time. Is that really so bad? Wherever they are that’s what youngster do – have a good time. However a word of warning there are people who target the drunks and mug them because quite frankly they are an easy target, so anyone visiting should take the same care as they would take in their home town. During the day blink and you have missed it, Veronicas in daylight is really a very ordinary street, nothing special, in fact, it looks rather dingy.

So does the real Las Américas bear any resemblance to its reputation?  In my opinion yes, in so far as it has given the tourist the resorts they have asked for. Before the Brits arrived in their droves the Spanish didn’t have “Full English Breakfasts” or “Sunday Roasts” but if that is what the vast majority want, then Las Américas is happy to provide these things. The rest is a bit of a misconception.  Part of PdlA’s appeal is it continues to renew, refurbish and refine large areas as it follows the trends dictated by the more discerning holidaymaker that it attracts these days.

The most interesting places in Las Vegas. Where to go? What to watch?

Las Vegas is one of the most popular cities in America. Yes, not least because the city is the world capital of the casino industry. Now there are more than 1000 gambling houses in the city, but there are other interesting places on its territory that have nothing to do with gambling.

Many tourists are interested in the Mirage volcano. No, this is not a real volcano, but it erupts quite realistically, with real fire and a curtain of smoke. It is located on the territory of the hotel of the same name. The eruption can be seen daily from 19until 23:00 (they run every hour). To get a better seat, you must arrive 10 minutes before the start. This show is absolutely free.

It is believed that this volcano was created in order to surpass such an iconic landmark in Los Angeles as the Bellagio fountains. These fountains literally fascinate with their bright and iridescent water jets. The peculiarity of the fountains is that they are controlled by a computer, the jets of water “dance” to the world-famous compositions. The fact that the construction cost more than $40 million speaks volumes.

The Mandalay Bay Hotel has an aquarium, aptly named Shark Reef. Here you can see different inhabitants of the underwater depths. This place is open for visits from 10 am to 8 pm on Tuesday and Thursday and until 10 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Through the glass of the aquarium you can see jellyfish, sharks, piranhas, mollusks, turtles and other inhabitants. The greatest attention of tourists is attracted by the process of feeding bloodthirsty sharks.

There is also a piece of France in Las Vegas, which is presented in the form of the Eiffel Tower. The height of the American tower is two times lower than the original, but it looks no less beautiful, bright and original (especially for those tourists who have not seen the original). This 140-meter building houses various boutiques, souvenir shops, and expensive restaurants.

Another interesting high-rise attraction in Las Vegas is the tower of the Stratosphere Hotel. With its size, the tower impresses even experienced tourists; it rises up to 350 meters, thanks to which guests of the city can enjoy the landscapes of the city from a bird’s eye view. At night, the top of the tower turns into a bright lighthouse. In the lower and middle parts of the tower there are various gambling establishments, and the upper part is a place where extreme attractions are concentrated, including the world-famous roller coaster. A visit to this attraction is paid and it is best to buy an unlimited ticket, which costs about $ 32 and gives you the right to spend the whole day on the attractions and visit the observation deck.

The Red Canyon differs from all other sights with its natural origin. Volcanic and oceanic rocks have created not only beautiful, but unique landscapes. The main vegetation of this nature reserve are evergreen cacti. But in this place you can not only admire the beautiful landscapes, but also go in for extreme sports, for example, go on a trip along mountain paths on bicycles or go rock climbing. The canyon is located about 20 miles from the city.

Opposite the city hall, in the courthouse, there is a rather unusual, but at the same time interesting Mafia Museum. Its exhibits tell about the history of the emergence and formation of various criminal structures and groups that played an hardly primary role in the development of Las Vegas as the capital of the gambling business. Most of the items date back to the 20th century, these are the clothes of bandits, and various types of weapons, and documents, and much more.

One of the most interesting exhibits of the museum is the electric chair, on which many mafia criminals were executed. Today, this museum is one of the most popular and iconic attractions in Las Vegas.

Spa in gran canaria: Top 10 spas in Gran Canaria

Top 10 spas in Gran Canaria

Who doesn’t love to get pampered? Especially on holiday, where your default position becomes a horizontal one. So, if you’re looking for a relaxing time whilst on Gran Canaria, here’s our rundown, in no particular order, of the island’s top 10 wellness and spa facilities.

Spa Krabí Valle Taurito

Gran Canaria resorts don’t get much more laidback than Taurito. Cut off from the rest of the south-west, there’s not much to do in the area other than chill. And one of the best locations in the area to adopt the supine pose is the Spa Krabí at the Hotel Paradise Valle Taurito.

Popular treatments include massages and wraps. Try the aloe-vera ones which draw on the therapeutic properties of Gran Canaria’s wonder herb. Although other treatments originate from Thailand rather than the Canary Islands, including the Ayuverda and Kombi massages.

Spa Center Agua Vital

It comes as little surprise to discover that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s classiest spa, the Spa Center Agua Vital, is located in the capital’s swankiest hotel, the Hotel Santa Catalina. The spa’s home to a heated indoor swimming pool, complete with jets, along with a jacuzzi, sauna, and Turkish bath. There are also a range of body and facial treatments available.

Like most spas on Gran Canaria, the Spa Center Agua Vital’s adult only. This means 16+. The spa’s opening hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am-11:00pm, 10:00am-8:00pm on Saturdays, and 10:00am to 6:00pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Vital Suites Spa Centre

Disconnect at your leisure at a magical Maspalomas spa whose entrance fee’s €20. For this, you can lounge in a heated Talasso pool or get even steamier in a Finnish sauna or Turkish bath. There’s also a free daily Reiki session if you’re interested in trying out this Japanese system of natural healing.

The Vital Suites Spa Centre’s open every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. More specific health and beauty treatments include mud wraps and deep-tissue massages. Prices start at €9 for eyebrow shaping and go all the way up to €130 for a two-hour Luxus anti-aging treatment.

Spa Corallium

If 3,500 square metres of inner spa isn’t enough for you, you can always venture into the connected pool outside. The Corralium is located in Meloneras, the exclusive area that’s home to more five-star hotels than anywhere else on the island. Part of the Lopesan Costa Meloneras resort, it’s open to non-guests who are aged 18 and above.

From the 4°C of the Ice World to the 90°C of the African Sauna, visitors can enjoy a global tour of spa experiences. These include the Himalayan Salt Cave. Perhaps the most famous facility, though, is the Zodiac Relax Room aka The Womb Room.

Vital Wellness Center

The spa of the Hotel Eugenia Victoria’s the pick of all the wellness centres Playa del Inglés has to offer. Like the Spa Corallium, it reimagines the spa as theme park. So you can go from the extreme of shivering in the snow cabin to literally floating in the warm, salty waters of the Dead Sea pool.

Ordinarily adult-only, parents can bring their children along to the Vital Wellness Center for some, though not all, of the morning. However, the Mon Amie UV bed with collagen stimulation’s a strictly 18+ attraction. One question remains: just where are you going to start your world tour?

Thalasso Gloria Palace San Agustín

Ever since the canarii, the Berber-descending people who occupied the island before the 15th-century Spanish invasion, the residents of Gran Canaria have recognized the health benefits of the Atlantic Ocean’s saltwater. The north coast’s Bañaderos owes its name to the fact that it was a popular destination with the daughters of the ruling canarii families. However, it wasn’t until the opening of the Thalasso Gloria Palace San Agustín in 1998, that a wellness centre opened using seawater in its major treatments.

Gloria Palace San Agustín’s thalasso is not only the biggest on Gran Canaria; it’s also the largest in the whole of Europe. There’s more than 7,000 square metres to explore at your leisure. This 15+ spa’s open daily, from 10:00am to 9:00pm.

Despacio Spa Centre

The five-star h20 Playa Meloneras Playa’s one of h20’s spa hotels. Despacio is Spanish for slowly. You’ll certainly want to take your time soaking up the benefits of the hydrotherapy at this well-appointed spa centre, located in the island’s poshest resort, Meloneras.

There are hydromassage beds to recline on and an ice fountain to brave. This forms part of the Dynamic Circuit. For external guests this costs €30, with other treatments rising to €235 for a combined facial, manicure, massage, and pedicure.

Seaside Palm Beach Spa Wellness

Relax in luxurious surroundings in the heart of Maspalomas. You’ll find this plush spa wellness centre in the grounds of the Seaside Palm Beach, the island’s first Design Hotel. Although the Canary Islands are largely associated with bucket-and-spade tourism, this is Gran Canaria at its most glamorous.

The Seaside Palm Beach Spa Wellness is rightly famous for its massages, which include a volcanic-stone massage. However, the one you see pictured’s Pantai Luar. This treatment hails from the Far East and sees heated cotton bags, stuffed with medicinal herbs, employed as part of a deep-tissue massage.

Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia Spa

You wouldn’t think it possible, but theSeaside Grand Hotel Residencia Spa is even more elegant than its sister establishment. However, it’s not that surprising really as the Grand Hotel Residencia is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. What’s more, this is where rock stars stay when they play the island, with Bruce Springsteen a recent guest.

Enjoy a spot of R&R in an area that was renovated, and indeed, expanded in 2012. No expense has been spared on the opulent design of the spa’s seven treatment rooms. Visit to discover the beauty and health treatments beloved of (rock) royalty.

The great outdoors

Holidaying on a budget? Save your centimes by exploring Gran Canaria’s free outdoor spas. On the north coast of the island, you’ll find plenty of piscinas naturales, saltwater swimming pools, constructed next to the major beaches and resorts.

There’s a stunningly-situated one at the aforementioned Bañaderos whose coastal area’s known as El Puertillo. A 10-minute drive from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, head along to the new promenade from the main beach to reach the swimming pool. Alternatively, explore behind the resort to discover charcos (rockpools) where, when the Atlantic enters, it looks and feels just like being in a jacuzzi.

W

hy go to Gran Canaria? Sun, sea and sangria – sure – but how about to spa? While the Canary Islands’ go-to holiday destination may be best known for its clement summers, warm winters and postcard-perfect beaches, it’s also emerging as the latest wellness hotspot for those seeking some R&R off the sun lounger.

Its secret lies in the ancient art of thalassotherapy. Harnessing the healing and restorative powers of the sea, thalasso spas combine waters naturally rich in minerals such as iodine, calcium and magnesium with a circuit of massaging jets to ease aching muscles, boost energy levels and even help restore a healthy sleep pattern.

This, combined with a natural larder stocked with some of the beauty industry’s best ingredients – from aloe vera, often touted as the world’s purest, to sea salt scrubs and algae wraps sourced from the ocean – has turned Gran Canaria into a must-visit on the mindful traveller’s map. Here’s a guide to the best places to stay ‘n’ spa.

The all-rounder

(Gloria Palace Amadores ) / Gloria Palace Amadores

Gloria Palace Amadores

Located on the side of a cliff with spectacular panoramic views across the ocean, the Gloria Palace Amadores is the perfect place to begin your Thalasso journey. Not least of all because a leisurely 1,800m2 is devoted to health, all centred around a series of seawater pools. Heated between a refreshing 16 degrees to a linger-for-longer 37 degrees, the circuit features 29 hydromassage stations, from cross-current swimming to swan neck waterfalls and microbubble loungers, designed to melt muscles and kickstart sluggish circulations.

When you’re not soaking in the waters, the large family-friendly complex is perfectly positioned to cater to every type of guest. For those travelling with children, there are two large terrace pools to choose from – one with a schedule of games for active types, the other with a healthy supply of sun beds and pool bars for those in relaxation on the agenda – plus a kid’s pool and live entertainment in the lounge bar every night. As such, it can prove busy – particularly during high season. But for those with escapism in mind, the restaurant boasts sweeping ocean views ideal for sunset spotters, while a glass lift will take you straight down to two neighbouring beaches – Playa Amadores and Playa de Puerto Rico – via a pit-stop at its promenade bar.

The one for escaping it all

Seaside Palm Beach

Seaside Palm Beach

If you want to make the most of Gran Canaria’s 360 days of sun – and frankly, why wouldn’t you? – Seaside Palm Beach is the one to do it in. Situated on the coast of Maspalomas, just a stone’s throw from the area’s famous sand dune nature reserve and a five-mile long golden beach, the five-star design hotel is stunning inside and out. The expansive pool area, surrounded by a palm tree oasis – which also doubles as a dining area at breakfast and dinner (think à la carte tasting menus to stuff-yourself-silly BBQs) – leads to a picturesque outdoor spa which boasts two open air thalasso pools, complete with steam rooms, sauna and quiet zone sun loungers. Ideal for when switching off entirely is top of your to-do list.

The one for spa junkies

Gloria Palace San Agustin

Gloria Palace San Agustin

Part of the Gloria hotel group, the Gloria Palace San Agustin is home to the largest Thalassotherapy centres in Europe. The fitness pool – unmissable for its elegantly sweeping dome roof designed by local architect Luis López – features an impressive 34 hydromassage stations, alongside saunas and Turkish baths for whiling away an afternoon (or seven). “Cures” include two to three day anti-stress plans, plus specialist programmes from relieving rheumatic conditions to helping to stop smoking. The on-site therapists also specialise in Ayurveda – treat yourself a relaxing massage which uses warm oils and bundles of aromatic herbs to lull you into a total state of relaxation. Rooms in the main building are good for couples, while the cabana suites, which line the pool, are ideal for families. But if you want to avoid the kids at the lunch buffet, its Gorbea rooftop pool terrace offers respite with cracking views and a mean Aperol spritz.

The one for an (Instagram-friendly) digital detox

(Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa) / Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa

Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa

As Instagrammable holiday snaps go, the infinity pool at Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa is up there with hot dogs legs and beach strolls at sunset. With sweeping views of the white sand and crystal-clear sea of Amadores Beach, it’s a big ask to pull yourself away from the water’s edge. But those that do will be rewarded with a small yet perfectly formed Thalasso pool which opens early and shuts late and is therefore ideal for daily dippers. Each and every guest has access to the spa so it can get busy. But Its five treatment rooms also offers a wealth of specialist services, from Reiki to raindrop therapy, as well as a hot stone massage guaranteed to ease even the most stressed out shoulders.

From €117,35 per night for two with a double room with sea views on a B&B basis. gloriapalaceth.com/

The one worth splashing out on

Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia

Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia

For lovers of luxury, the Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia is paradise. The five-star hotel-cum-private residence boasts beautiful gardens, private Spanish Colonial villas and undisturbed peace. Its spa too is a haven of tranquillity, from its picturesque palm-fringed swimming pool to its hidden mineral-enriched Thalasso, complemented by an outdoor gym and treatment rooms. Such luxury, of course, comes at a price. But those who wish to splash out should come for its signature Pantai Luar massage and stay for some of the best food and wine Gran Canaria has to offer at its beautiful terrace restaurant.

From € 417,60 per night for two with a standard double room on Half Board basis. grand-hotel-residencia.com/

Relax in Canary Islands with health benefits and try the physiotherapy and beauty services in Gran Canaria!

The island is able to offer you a huge selection of restorative, wellness and rejuvenation treatments for the most refined taste. For the convenience of vacationers, VIP service is provided with the departure of specialists to the hotel at any time convenient for you.

At your service hot stone massage for the spine, Japanese Shiatsu massage, weight loss programs, clay and algae wraps, manicure, pedicure, and the unique Atlantic Relax procedure (complex relaxation, rejuvenation and prolongation of human biological life). The unique climate and ecology of the Canary archipelago enhances the healing effect of the procedures.

Since ancient times, the mild climate has attracted many people to the Canaries, for a long time they were called the “Happy Islands”. It follows from Greek mythology that it was here that the mythical gardens of the Hesperides were located, where golden apple trees grew. In the 19th century, the Canary Islands became a favorite place for recreation and treatment of many diseases. Nowadays, the islands of “eternal spring” are ahead of other centers of European recreation in popularity.

The British were the first to discover the unique healing properties of the Canary Islands. And until now, the overwhelming majority of vacationers are tourists from the UK of Balzac age who come to the island to “rejuvenate”. They are sure that a large part of the success of treatment on the islands lies in the indescribable natural landscapes, which have a great effect on physical and mental health. A leisurely and calm lifestyle, an atmosphere of general celebration and benevolence on a subconscious level form a good mood and contribute to effective treatment.

Local residents are convinced that life is a holiday and it is given to all people for joy. Therefore, the spirit of universal kindness and home comfort always reigns on the islands.

The nature of the Canarian archipelago is extremely diverse, mountain ranges entwined with greenery interspersed with pine forests and the endless blue of the Atlantic. The purest mountain air is filled with a wonderful mixture of the ocean, the aromas of laurel and orange. And the traditional food of the Canary Islands is recommended by nutritionists around the world as an example of tasty, healthy and healthy food.

From the medical point of view, the Canary Islands have everything for excellent relaxation and treatment: thermal and mineral springs, an abundance of sun, sea water and modern treatment centers. The local air, thanks to the ocean and pine forests, has a high level of ions and phytoncides, which have a positive effect on the immune system and help the body fight infections and stress. Thanks to these substances, the air turns into a natural antibiotic, it is felt almost immediately, upon arrival in the Canary Islands, the symptoms of asthma, so familiar to living in big cities, immediately disappear.

Gentle and soft sun also participates and helps the healing process, thanks to it vitamin D appears in the body, which is so necessary for strengthening and regenerating bone tissue. The water from the Atlantic Ocean, which is so rich in minerals, turns out to be a natural and inexhaustible reservoir of vitamin and mineral complexes.
