Hawaii
Hawaii has 6 major island to visits, although there are many more. The main six are Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
They are unique in the their own way, although Hawaii, aka Big Island will always have my soft spot due to it being my honeymoon destination!
However, the vast ecosystem within the island is incredible. The diverse terrain includes coloured-sand beaches white, green and black, rainforest and tundra meaning you can have completely different weather on one side of the island to the other.
The flora and fauna is very special with turtles coming up to the beach to next and more. Whilst it is a distance to travel from the UK and some parts of the USA, the 24 degrees average temperature in October is very appealing! To check out the latest deals on Hawaii on Expedia see here.
Jamaica
Or how about tropical Jamaica? Autumn is both the best time and the worst time to visit Jamaica. The temperatures still range between the low 70s and mid 80s, but the rain can be very heavy. Toward the end of October and November means you miss the high crowds though.

The village of Cofete and the Winter villa in Fuerteventura
General presentation
Cofete is an agricultural hamlet irrelevant – almost a slum – on the northwest coast of the peninsula of Jandía in the southwest of the island of Fuerteventura. However Cofete enjoys an exceptional location at the foot of the highest mountain of Fuerteventura, the Pico de la Zarza, and near one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Playa de Cofete. Cofete and its beach are located inside the Natural Park of Jandía and have, therefore, been preserved for tourism development. As the entire park, Cofete is part of the municipality of Pájara.
Another attraction of Cofete is an enigmatic villa situated above the village, the villa Winter, to which are attached extravagant German submarines legends and national socialists networks, although this villa was built after World War World.
Cofete is located in the basin of the crater Jandía whose most collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean; only remaining southern part of the caldera. This southern part of the caldera forms the Arco de Cofete the cliffs formed by the rim of the caldera, the summit is the Pico de la Zarza (“Peak of the Bramble”), with 807 m.
To achieve Cofete from Morro del Jable you have to take a vehicle track – but difficult – that crosses the edge of the caldera with a collar located 350 m above sea level. Shortly after the pass is the viewpoint of the Degollada de Agua Oveja, 230 m above sea level, where the view on the wild beaches of Cofete and Barlovento is splendid. This stone track was built in 1946 by prisoners of agricultural penal colony Tefía near La Oliva (Colonia de Vagos y Maleantes, “vagrants and crooks colony”). From Morro del Jable it takes ¾ of an hour to travel the 19 km of track to Cofete, preferably all-terrain vehicle. Cofete is also the goal of many jeep safaris organized from Morro Jable. The track is often narrow and does not permit the passing of vehicles.
On foot you can reach Cofete from Morro del Jable through the Barranco de Gran Valle; hiking is a little less than 8 km long. One can observe endemic plants of Jandía or the Canary Islands: the beginning of the hike we find euphorbia of Jandía (Euphorbia handiensis) then, at the approach of Cofete, many euphorbias populations of the Canaries (Euphorbia canariensis) , large succulent plant similar to cactus shaped candelabra.
The hamlet of Cofete
The hamlet of Cofete consists of a few houses and sheltered huts – somehow – westerly winds by a small hill, and grouped around a coffee shop to the friendly service where, it seems, we do not eat too bad. Many of these homes are inhabited occasionally, Scent of a Woman, by residents of Morro del Jable.
To the east of the hamlet we see a large bronze statue of Gustav Winter accompanied by his inseparable black dog; Villa Winter is located 1.5 km south of the hamlet at the foot of the slopes of the mountain. The monument to Gustav Winter is built on top of a lime kiln (horno de cal) used to produce quicklime.
One kilometer north of the hamlet is the beach of Cofete; just before the beach is Cemetery Cofete, a rather sinister marine cemetery filled with unmarked graves; it is said that many of these tombs are those of convicts have been employed in the construction of the track linking Morro Jable to Cofete. Next to the cemetery is the parking and camping – camping is temporarily closed.
Beach Cofete (Playa de Cofete)
The beach Cofete extends for about 8 km from Roque del Moro, a dyke or volcanic vent, located west and El Islote, a rocky islet connected to the coast by a sandbar east ; the average width of the beach at Cofete is 60 meters. It consists of a golden sand from the decomposition of rocks and disintegration of shells, not brought sand of the Sahara by the east winds, as is the case for the beaches of Sotavento.
Because it is part of the Natural Park of Jandía, the area around the beach are inconstructibles and Beach Cofete remained a wild beach.
The wind is usually quite strong, as ocean currents: swimming can be dangerous. The surf creates strong very popular rolls surfers.
On the beach of Cofete, in a reserved area, is conducted reintroduction experience of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) disappeared from the island of Fuerteventura from the early twentieth century. The eggs were collected from a colony of the southern Cape Verde islands, the environment and the beaches resemble Cofete, particularly by the quality of water, sand and especially sufficiently warm climate. The eggs of turtles are raised in artificial nests and before the young turtles cross the beach crawling to venture into the ocean, they are captured and transferred in aquariums from a breeding center located in the port of Morro del Jable. When they are strong enough to swim, a chip is implanted them in order to follow them and releasing them in the ocean on the beach of Cofete. It is hoped that as adults these turtles return to lay their eggs in Cofete and thus, the species happen again spontaneously on the island of Fuerteventura.
Beach Barlovento (Playa de Barlovento)
Beach Barlovento (“wind”) is extended towards the beach Cofete, beyond the island El Islote. Beach Barlovento has a length of about 6 km; This is a strip of greater or lesser sand – depending on the tide – between the ocean and the volcanic cliff; swimming can be dangerous, and the days of high tide, even the walk can be hazardous.
Villa Winter (Casa de los Winter)
The mysterious Villa Winter is located 1.5 km east of the hamlet of Cofete, almost at the foot of the Pico de la Zarza; The villa is located 130 m above sea level. This is a kind of mansion, with a ground floor and a mezzanine; the main entrance of the ground floor is facing the mountain and opens onto a patio where trying to survive a few banana trees; this patio reminiscent of the rich Canarian houses. Gargoyles carved in the shape of crocodiles discharge rainwater on the patio. Each side of the ground floor is extended by a balcony railing. The villa is covered by a roof in Roman tiles. The mezzanine is open on the north side – facing the sea – by a gallery with five arches overlooking a terrace. On the east side is a round tower of two floors with mullioned windows on the upper floor and a roof terrace.
The villa was built from 1946 by a German engineer and entrepreneur, Gustav Winter, although in an interview given to the magazine “Stern” shortly before his death, it shows the date of 1958. The villa was restored in 1985 – probably with the intention of making a hotel – but is nevertheless in poor condition; the mezzanine openings are bricked up; the facades are crumbling. Villa Winter is the destination of many jeep safaris from Morro del Jable; visiting the court is authorized and guides that know they say – tip against the guards – to visit the interior of the villa.
Gustav Winter was born in 1893 in Neustadt am Titisee near Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest. After earning a degree in electrical engineering, Winter traveled to Argentina, where he put in service of electrical installations in large haciendas. He decided to return to Germany was triggered when the First World War, but the ship that brought the Argentine was intercepted in the English Channel by the British Navy and Winter was interned for a year in a prison ship at Southampton; during a mass escape of prisoners he was able to embark on a ship, the Hollandia, which called at Vigo in Galicia. Winter had to stay in Spain, where he put in service several power plants (Ciudad Real, Zaragoza and Valencia). He left the Canary Islands in 1925; in 1926 he played an important role in the construction of the power plant of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to CICER company (Compañía Insular Colonial de Electricidad y Riesgos). In 1933, sailing on his boat, the Argos, he discovered the almost island of Jandía, was seduced by the beauty of the place and moved to Morro del Jable – which was then a small fishing village. He tried to build a fish cannery and a cement plant, but both projects were unsuccessful. In July 1937 Winter rented the entire peninsula of Jandía to the heirs of the Count of Santa Coloma, who owned; he made a fence 2 meters high which prohibited access to nearly island. 1939 Winter was mobilized and in 1940 he was found to be responsible for the construction of shelters for submarines on the Atlantic coast of France. In 1941 the peninsula of Jandía was sold to the company Dehesa de Jandía including Gustav Winter was mentioned as the administrator.
After the war, in 1946, Winter returned to Fuerteventura and began building his villa in Cofete, while living in Morro del Jable, where he built a school and a church. He began breeding sheep and goats and in the production of cheeses sold under the brand “Dehesa de Jandía”; he also tried to produce tomatoes – despite the unfavorable environment – which were to be exported from the port of Gran Tarajal, Winter also made an attempt afforestation Massif de Jandía with 10,000 pine seedlings Canary; Nothing remains of these woodlands.
At that time the Anglo-Saxon secret services communicated to the Spanish Government a “black list” of 104 names of alleged Nazi agents – which included the name of Gustav Winter – by requiring their deportation to Germany for trial; none of these alleged agents was finally expelled. In 1956, the family Winter moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, without ever having lived in the Villa Winter in Cofete. In 1962 the company Dehesa de Jandía gave in 2 300 hectares of land between Morro del Jable and Cofete to Gustav Winter; these lands will prove to be a gold mine when part of the land will be sold as building land for tourism projects (tourism boom Jandía began in the early 1970s). In 1971 Gustav Winter died in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at the age of 78.
Shortly before the death of Gustav Winter German magazine sensationalist “Stern” published on Winter – who had granted him an interview – an article entitled “Die Glücksritter” (soldiers of fortune). This magazine will be illustrated in 1983 by the publication of false diaries of Adolf Hitler. This article on “the mysterious villa Winter and his mysterious owner” appears to be the beginning of rants about Gustav Winter and Villa Winter. Over the years journalists a copy of evil multiply sensationalist hacks and publish bad spy novels with the villa Winter as a backdrop. The unusual situation of this large secluded villa in this area difficult to access and inhospitable, nourishes fantasies, as well as the strategic position of the Canary Islands that could be appealing to the belligerents.
The legend, which then creates, the villa Winter a secret base of Nazi agents whose function was to supply German submarines during the “Battle of the Atlantic”; the tower of the villa would have served as a benchmark for submarines; shelter for submarines would be built in a volcanic cave in the villa; underground link the cellars of the villa at the shelter for submarines; the villa would have been the brothel for German submariners who were relaxing with prostitutes on the beautiful beaches of Cofete; two U-booten missing since the end of World War II still would also docked in the submarine base of Cofete. After the war the villa would have served as a lodge for National Socialist dignitaries exfiltrated to South America secretly arrived in a submarine, and after a cosmetic surgery operation to give them the face of their new identity, they resumed their journey with false papers since the airport that Gustav Winter had built in the Punta de Jandía, 7.5 km southwest of the villa. Chancellor Adolf Hitler himself would have passed through the villa Winter. Not to mention the inevitable “Nazi gold” – indispensable element of any phantasmagoria of “nazi-business” – that would be hidden somewhere in the vicinity of the villa.
Gustav Winter was probably an honorable engineer, nature lovers; anyway these legends only add a little mystery to the romantic charm of the long solitary beaches of Cofete.

PLAYA de COFETE – thirteen kilometers of paradise
One of the most amazing trips I took during my stay on Fuerteventura was a ride by public bus to the Playa de Cofete, a wild beach paradise on the island’s southwest coast.

You’re On Vacation!
“Sorry, the bus is full”, explains the driver apologetically. He’s not lying, merry day-trippers occupy all the seats in the medium-sized bus, and the ceiling is far too low to join the ride standing. “So sorry. But there’s another one leaving at noon”, he offers an alternative. “Oh no! This is bullshit! I’ve had it!” yells the German lady. She’s standing in the middle of the bus, yelling first at the driver, then randomly at whoever, and finally, she turns to her husband. Shoving him off the bus, she keeps repeating how shitty this all is and how much she has had it. Man, some people definitely need a vacation. Oh wait, that’s what she’s on.
To be honest, I also expected to be the only one on the morning bus to Playa de Cofete. Doesn’t everybody else rent a car? Apparently not since as I got to the station on the outskirts of Morro Jable about twenty minutes before the scheduled departure, there were already about five people queuing in front of the bus door. Obviously, the line got longer and longer. As we hit the road towards Cofete, we’ve left about ten people behind.
You see, sometimes suffering from a strong case of OCPD does pay out. After all, not only am I sitting comfortably on the bus, I was even able to pick a prime seat next to an open window.
Sweet Nothing
As we leave the port of Morro Jable behind, the coach slowly cruises up the hills of the Parque Natural de Jandía reserve. Actually, this – obviously very popular – all-wheel bus connection was installed to reduce the number of vehicles in the natural area. It clearly saves vacationers the bumpy ride by their rental car.
A long and winding road across the Parque Natural de Jandía.
So we work our way up to the summit, driving in wide elegant curves between gravel and lava and very few dry shrubs. There are some ruins and a handful of goats and lots and lots of what I love most about Fuerteventura: Beautiful nothing.
Fuerteventura’s wilderness.
As we reach a summit approximately halfway between Morro Jable and Cofete, I regret for a short moment not having my own vehicle. A couple of cars stopped at the vantage point Punto de vista sobre Puerto de Montaña which modestly translates to viewpoint at the pass and a couple of people are taking pictures of the spectacular coast spreading below. Obviously, the bus does not stop. I can only keep a picture of this mesmerizing sight in my heart.
View of the Playa de Cofete from above.
Then, the gravel road descends down to the beach.
Life Is a Beach
At the end of the rough tire-killing gravel road lies the village Cofete. Please don’t picture an idyllic village. It’s a settlement with a couple of extremely simple makeshift houses with the vibe of a ghost town. One of those shacks is the Restaurante Cofete Pepe El Faro which is normally open every day from 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.
I don’t have to travel around the globe to enjoy dreamy beaches.
Cofete’s shore, however, is the epitome of a dream beach. There is not one building, even not a kiosk or stand. No loungers or umbrellas. Nothing but thirteen kilometers of golden sand.
Although swimming is dangerous, there’s nothing wrong with dipping your feet.
Since due to the strong currents, bathing is very dangerous and people have drowned here in the past, this endless sandy paradise is rather for lazing or strolling.
I opt for lazing, and as I make myself comfortable on my beach towel, I spot this young woman twisting and twirling, jumping and frolicking in the shallow part of the sea where the waves roll out. Man, she’s having a fantastic time, good for her. Suddenly she stops in her tracks and swirls her long flying locks into a bun on her neck. With a very serious expression on her face, she checks the display on a camera that a young man is holding. She doesn’t seem too happy. Hence, she loosens the bun, and her locks flutter in the wind as she re-starts her twisting and twirling, jumping and frolicking. The young man follows her with the camera. Then she checks again. And twists and twirls. Man, this looks exhausting, I pity her. And also the young man who would possibly prefer enjoying this little piece of paradise.
Influencers in their natural habitat. Although their pics will be all over the internet, I pixeled their faces for discretion and privacy.
All this twisting and twirling, jumping and frolicking is keeping them busy the entire time we spend on Playa de Cofete. Later, they pose together for some lovey-dovey pics, and then comes the bus to Morro Jable and their influencer shift is over and they can finally relax in their bus seats and call it a day.
Cofete’s Mysteries
There is a small graveyard right next to the bus stop respectively car park. The residents of the village of Cofete used to bury their deceased here. Supposedly, it was built close to the sea so that their souls could float away across the Atlantic.
Peeping through the door.
Due to Cofete’s strong winds, all the graves are almost entirely covered with sand. The heaps of sand also pile up at the entrance, so that the gate to the cemetery can hardly be opened. Nevertheless, you can simply climb over the low wall.
What a wonderful spot to rest in peace.
Another mysterious place in forlorn Cofete is the so-called Villa Winter, built by the German engineer Gustav Winter. It is rumored that Winter received grants from a high Nazi commander to buy the land in 1938. There are various rumors regarding secret war-related activities. Also, some Nazi war criminals are said to have been accommodated here temporarily after WWII as they were fleeing prosecution along the so-called ratlines to South America. I’ve written about this dark practice in my post on Bariloche in Argentina as well as on Buenos Aires. Nevertheless, these rumors have never been proven.
Gustav Winter, who died in 1971, claimed that Villa Winter was not built until 1958. Supposedly he opted for the remote and difficult-to-access area because he was a nature lover and wanted to set up a tomato plantation there. However, the barren region makes this claim very questionable.
The villa stands picturesquely on the hillside, surrounded by vines and protected by dry stone walls. Officially, it is not possible to visit the villa. Yet, some guides know how to gain access for a small tip.
However, you should not get too close to the villa by yourself as there might be highly aggressive dogs around.
Take a Hike
The route between Morro Jable and Cofete is also a popular hike. You can get to the beginning of the hiking trail either by car or bus. Bus line #111 goes from the main bus station to the Gran Valle stop. Here the hike begins. It is recommended to take the early bus at 10 a. m.
The hiking trail starts at the parking lot. You can also cycle the route by mountain bike. The path starts flat and ascents eventually. On this hike, you go up 282 meters and 257 meters down. It is an easy to moderate hike. The path is well-maintained. Nevertheless, you should wear good hiking boots and take sun protection, a sun hat, and plenty of water with you.
After I broke my leg in a secluded gorge on Gran Canaria, I cannot stretch enough the importance of sturdy hiking boots.
The hike to the village of Cofete is about 6.5 kilometers long and should take 3 to 4 hours.
You don’t need to trek both ways. Simply coordinate your hike according to bus line #111 which runs twice a day in either direction.
How to Get There
If you go by public transport to Playa de Cofete, you don’t have many options. There is one bus #111 at 10 a. m. and another one at 2 p. m. To go back to Morro Jable, you can choose between a ride at around 12. 30 p. m. and 4.30 p. m.
Highwaymengoats on the way to Cofete.
One trip sets you back 8.70 €uros. As you have to pay the driver, try to have small change on you. However, since bus schedules might change, I suggest that you check the current timetable on the bus company’s website.
What to Bring With You
Literally everything. At least everything you need for a day on the beach where there’s no shade, no kiosk, nothing.
You have to bring all you need for a pleasant day on the beach. Playa de Cofete then contributes beauty and fun.
Hence, you should bring a beach towel, sun protection, a hat against the sun, plenty of water, and possibly some snacks.

Although I’m an avid solo-travelling woman, I sometimes like to join organized tours. Not only are they basically the only chance to put to sea. Since I’m not driving, they are also a valid option to go to remote places. And finally, it’s a great way to get in touch with fellow travellers.
Therefore, here are some great suggestions on how to visit Playa de Cofete and other places of interest on the island of Fuerteventura. Especially during high season, pre-booking online will guarantee your place at the activity of your choice*:
The day trip to Playa de Cofete was one of the highlights of my week on the island of Fuerteventura. To read about the others, go to this post and take your pick!

GARDENS IN LANZAROTE – Botanical Gardens and Green Spaces
Gardens In Lanzarote To Visit
Searching for gardens to visit in Lanzarote? There is only one designated botanical garden in Lanzarote for tourists to explore. But for those in the know there are lots of other green spaces and places of botanical interest too…..
The Canaries – Spain’s Nursery Garden
The Canary Islands boast a rich botanical history. During the expansion of the Spanish Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries this archipelago located just off the coast of Africa became a key trading post. With Spanish galleons transporting a rich variety of new plants and food stuffs from across the New World to the mainland via the Canaries – as well as via longer established trade routes to the east.
Mild year-round temperatures made the Canaries the ideal spot to acclimatise these new plant species before their introduction into mainland Spain. So in 1788 King Carlos III drew up a Royal Decree ordaining the opening of a brand new botanical garden in Puerto del la Cruz, Tenerife – the Jardin de Aclimatacion de Orotava. Which is now one of the oldest and best-known botanical gardens in the world.
Lanzarote – Challenging Climate and Conditions
Lanzarote lies at the eastern end of the Canary Islands chain, closer to the African continent and the western Sahara and is a much more arid island than Tenerife. Annual rainfall figures are far lower – just 150 mm per year.
There are few tall mountains prompting precipitation or deep valleys offering plants a protected spot out of the wind – as is the case on other islands such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera.
The Trade Winds, which once powered Spain’s galleons towards the New World, sweep across Lanzarote from April through until August. Creating challenging conditions for any plant seeking to eek out an existence in some of the island’s more exposed areas, where little can thrive. Whilst volcanic eruptions as recently as the 1820’s covered around one quarter of the island in a thick crust of lava.
However despite these various challenges gardens still thrive here as locals adapt by creating micro climates and green spaces in more sheltered, protected spots and by sympathetically selecting plants suitable to the conditions and environment.
Botanical Gardens in Lanzarote
The Cactus Garden, Guatiza
The Cactus Garden is the only officially designated botanical gardens to visit in Lanzarote. Cacti and succulents are combined to create a truly surreal garden-scape, set against the backdrop of a brick red former quarry. And it’s located just a short stroll away from Finca Botanico.
View our full Visitor Guide To The Cactus Garden
Other Gardens in Lanzarote To Explore
LagOmar
The former home of Omar Sharif took the theme of the Arabic folk tale 1001 Nights, on the suggestion of the local artist and architect Cesar Manrique. And there are plenty of Moorish influences in evidence throughout the gardens here, which enjoy a protected spot tucked into the side of a hill in a former quarry.
This sheltered site provides the perfect environment for a wide variety of mature palms – such as the indigenous phoenix canariensis, coco plumosa and morrocan date. As well as the enormous paddle like leaves of giant strelitzia nicolai. Along with an abundance of other exotica, encompassing cacti, agaves, bougainvillea and much more beside – all set against whitewashed walls and volcanic stone, separated into numerous smaller outdoor rooms and spaces.
By day this space operates as both a house museum and upscale (and arguably overpriced) restaurant. So up until 6pm you have to pay an entrance fee in order to enjoy the gardens. But after 6pm the cool little Cueva Bar opens up – allowing anyone to roam the gardens, drink in hand too!
Visit the LagOmar website for more information
Jameos del Agua
Carved out of a collapsed lava tunnel by Cesar Manrique this incredible space was originally conceived as a nightclub and concert space. But now serves mainly as a daytime tourist attraction and is widely regarded as the best illustration of Manrique’s philosophy of fusing art with nature.
The Jameos revolves around two bodies of water. The first is a sea fed lagoon which is home to a unique species of blind albino crab found only on Lanzarote. The second is a pristine swimming pool, reserved for the sole use of the King of Spain! And both spaces are surrounded by planting – including shade lovers such as giant diplazium ferns hanging from huge old shrimping baskets and swathes of elephant’s ear – alocasia portora. As well as plenty of Canarian palms and fig trees.
Gran Melia Salinas Hotel
This luxury five-star hotel in Costa Teguise was created by Cesar Manrique in conjunction with Madrid based architect Fernando Higueras back in 1976. And it is home to both stunning external grounds and a breath-taking internal atrium garden.
Manrique’s modern interpretation of a traditional Canarian patio garden spans most of the ground floor area of the hotel and incorporates a wide selection of tropical plants, all of which thrive beautifully in this protected spot to create a real jungle effect.
The public spaces of the hotel are open to visitors and pathways wind through the atrium allowing for close examination of the many botanical wonders on display here.
Luis Villalba’s Garden
Part garden centre, part show case for garden design services this isn’t really a garden in the conventional sense. But who cares? As there are still scores of attractive plants on display including both indigenous and foreign species free of charge.
Local artist Villabla has a fondness for English garden styles and designs and this protected site in Conil is home to hundreds of primarily potted plants available for sale.
Visit Luis Villalba’s website for more information
David Riebold’s Garden
This private garden created by British expat David Riebold is packed with drought tolerant native species and enjoys a sheltered spot in the verdant village of Haria, in the Valley of 1000 Palms.
Inspired by Dr David Bramwell, a prominent botanist with an interest in Canarian plants this atmosperhic space is packed with examples of native flora, including rarities such as wild fresias. The best way to enjoy this space is to book a break at one of the apartments available for rental here.

Valley of 1000 Palms
“Haria, Lanzarote” by Andrew Middleton is licensed with CC BY-NC-SA 2. 0. To view a copy of this license, visit https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/
The verdant Valley of 1000 Palms envelops the northern village of Haria in greenery and makes for a pretty breath-taking site. Especially when approached from the north via the serpentine LZ1 that snakes down from the risco some 400 metres above the valley floor.
Again, this protection provides the perfect environment for plants such as the phoenix canariensis to thrive. And local legend has it that villages used to plant a palm for every now born – one for a girl and two for a boy!
Tall palms tower above throughout the heart of the village – giving Haria a truly authentic Canarian feel. Making this a great spot for everything from a gentle potter to a full on hike through the surrounding palm groves.
El Bosquecillo – The Little Wood
To the surprise of many visitors Lanzarote boasts its own little wood. And whilst by no means a forest this hard to find spot atop the Risco de Famara is home to swathes of native species – including acacias, pines, thistles and wild fennel.
It’s a popular beauty spot for locals and tourists alike, offering amazing views, great walks a playground and some BBQ pits. And it’s well worth seeking out as this is one of the few all natural green spaces on Lanzarote.

You already know from its name that it is in Lanzarote, but inside the island you should know that it is in the area of the prickly pear Guatiza.
In the beginning, that is, before the Lanzarote Cactus Garden, this area was used as a landfill. nine0008 Around it were agricultural plantations of prickly pear, which grew cochineal. For this reason, this place was chosen to give it an important change, not only on an aesthetic level (we are talking about a garden), but also to improve the environment in the area.
In fact, it is now considered one of the most important gardens in the world, where its creator managed to combine architecture, horticulture, sculpture and interior design in one place.
What to eat in the cactus garden of Lanzarote
Now that you know the place and the person who gave birth to this Lanzarote cactus garden, do you know what you can find in it? Obviously, it will be cacti. What you may not know if you haven’t searched for information is that has over 4,500 specimens in 600 different species.
They are distributed throughout the enclosure, but it’s amazing how almost at a glance one can get a panoramic view of the place. And that’s what Cesar Manrique knew how to get attention from the moment he set foot there. nine0003
You will see, as soon as you arrive you will see a poster dedicated to its creator and what he saw outside the dump. Since this is a quarry, you will have to go downstairs and the first thing you will see as soon as you cross the entrance wall is a complete and general view of the entire area, with colors, patterns, shades… This will leave you impressed at first and not very familiar where you want to go first.
in that area, especially in the highest part of the place you will also have a white windmill. nine0008 It is in use, but only for decorative purposes, as it was previously used to grind corn.
how long does it take to see
If you are planning to go to the Lanzarote Cactus Garden to visit it, but do not know if you will have time or not, know that, according to what is said, to see it, it takes about 90 minutes. An hour if you are fast.
There are routes and paths along which you can see the entire garden. It will depend on where you stop to see certain specimens or take pictures. But it won’t take long to see it. nine0003
Of course, the experience itself can forget you for a long time, especially if you love this type of plant.
What to see in the Cactus Garden
Speaking of the experience you will have there, we are going to give you a few reasons why you should visit it. And we already tell you that it will be something incredible.
As soon as you arrive at the place, you will come across an 8-meter cactus. . Of course, from what we know, it’s metal and goes up to a huge iron door. But the impression it will give you is only a prelude to what you will see inside. nine0003
Next to the gift shop you have a cactus, Euphorbia candelabra. Setrata de una The African plant was highly valued there because it was the first cactus that Cesar Manrique planted in 1989. Currently, it has a considerable height. We are talking about 6-7 meters.
Another cactus not to be missed is the so-called “mother-in-law pillow” . Or, rather, “cushion mother-in-law”, because this is not one cactus, but a group of about twenty local Mexican specimens, which are characterized by a very small height and an original round shape. nine0003
There are many more cacti to see, and especially if you visit at different times, you may be surprised by the blooms of some of these species. So it is worth visiting it several times to see it in all its splendor. Do you dare to visit the cactus garden of Lanzarote?

place
A former quarry, transformed by the hands of the artist Cesar Manrique into a fabulous garden built around an amphitheater made of volcanic stone, this is an unusual place that will delight lovers of succulents.
Character Garden
Situated in the heart of the old quarry of Guatis, north of the volcanic island of Lanzarote in the Canaries, the cactus garden is undoubtedly a place of landscape change and botanical discovery. Carried out at 1991, this was the last work of Cesar Manrique, who was able to simultaneously show his talents as an architect and sculptor.
This 5,000 sq. Inspired by the impeccable silhouette of a millet flour windmill, M is a veritable open-air cactus museum with a breathtaking collection of nearly 10,000 items. The 1,450 species represented here come from the arid regions of America, Madagascar and, of course, the Canary Islands. All of these specimens were collected by botanist expert Estanislao González Ferrer, who died today. nine0003
Perched on steps that form a veritable amphitheater of volcanic rocks, columnar cacti such as Pachycereus , Myrtillocactus geometryrizans or Carnegieas gigantea western-famous proudly display their hieratic silhouettes towards the hot sun of the region.
Numerous stairs allow one to pass between the stands, also decorated with large balls Echinocactus or Ferocactus with occasional flaming urges. In some places, rounded windows, decorated with wrought iron in the shape of a cactus with sharp thorns, offer an original view of the garden. nine0003
In the center of this rather special amphitheater, a series of monoliths bear witness to the island’s ancient volcanic activity. They blend beautifully with the cactus that surrounds them. They watch pools of greenish water in which fish live, a strange ballet that lives in this frozen world. Here, Yuccas brevifolia otherwise called “the tree of Joshua”, forming real trees with powerful trunks, agaves and aloes offer their visitors their graphic forms, while many species prickly pear will intrigue the most curious! White and sharp shoots of cylindropuntias, or smooth snowshoes of wild Berber figs, through the soil cover, the collection will amaze even specialists.
More fertile mounds of soil grow some varieties of Hylocereus , but also Rhipsalis whose spectacular flowering remains unforgettable.

Student Comments
Melissa Wolff“I took a DELE preparation course and loved it. I passed the DELE on the first try, so it worked! My teacher was super familiar with the structure of the test, so the classes were focused just on what we needed. Now I can put my real Spanish level on my résumé, which I hope will land me a job where I can use my Spanish.”
Sophie Duval“I loved staying in Spain with Enforex. On the first day of school I didn’t even know one word in Spanish, but I learned the language very fast with the classes. The classes were super helpful and also so much fun. All the teachers were extremely nice, and I made really good friends at the school who I’m still in contact with. I hope to come back and see everyone again very soon!”
João Oliveira“This was the first time I had ever lived outside Brazil. I felt very welcome despite not speaking a single word of Spanish. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. The teachers are perfect! Not to mention the school is impeccable and the rooms are new and in perfect condition. I loved Spain, but without Enforex I don’t think I would have had such an amazing and unforgettable experience. Hopefully, I can return soon and stay longer!”
Christoph Kurtz“The very modern and clean school is ideal for learning Spanish. I was very surprised by the highly motivated and friendly teachers. Small class sizes ensure a very productive and at the same time relaxed learning atmosphere.
PS: A huge thanks to Ramón! Thanks to your private classes I was able to take full advantage of my stay. I picked up Spanish grammar even faster and truly understood it!”

Spots:
FUERTEVENTURA
The Spanish call the island Fuerte, so the name itself refers to the strong winds that pass by the island. Fuerteventura has been on the wind and kitesurf map for decades, thanks to its great wind conditions and more spacy beaches compared to the other islands. The year round nice weather and cheap flight-deals make it a great escape for surfing or kitesurfing.
SPOTGUIDE FUERTEVENTURA
CORRALEJO & FLAG BEACH
Located in the northeast of Fuerteventura just outside the town of Corralejo, Flag Beach is the best known and main kiteboarding spot in Fuerte.
The 7km long beach is wide and sandy. Kite centers have their set up right on the spot.
WIND, WEATHER & WATER
Although it is possible to kite in super conditions the year round, the most constant wind is blowing between March and September. Expect 15-20 knots side shore across the beach, which means it’s a great place for beginners to learn how to ride.
Flag beach is great but keep an eye on the tide, because on low tide it can get shallow and expose the reef from underneath the water. Booties can protect your feet from the reef and sea urchins.
Water temperatures are comfortable. A shorty will do the job outside the summer months when boardshorts and bikini s are sufficient.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Most kiters stay in Corralejo which is nearby to the kite spot. There are hotels and guest houses for any budget.
Tired of kiting, you can do a buggy tour in a close by nature park. Or surf, paddle surf, do a boat trip to lobos.
OTHER SPOTS IN FUERTEVENTURA
COTILLO
If you like wave riding you will enjoy another spot called el Cotillo where the wind usually blows a few knots stronger than at Flag Beach. This spot is less suitable for beginners.
Between Flag beach and el Cotillo there is another famous wave spot called Majanicho that can hold waves up to 3 meters on the outside of the bay.
SOTAVENTO
In the south of Fuerteventura there is another kitespot called Sotavento with great wind statistics. It blows a bit more off shore so epect more gusty wind. The rené Egli wind and kitecenter has been there for over 20 years, and is very pouplar with Germans. Expect crowd on the water during the high season. The offshore orientation and strong gusts mean it’s not a great place for beginners- that is, unless the lagoon is filled up by the tide. ( for about 2 or 3 weeks of the month).
Season: All year, but the best season starts on may and goes until september.

Why Visit?
If you’re looking for somewhere to kite all year round in Europe, it’s undoubtedly the Canary Islands. A group of Spanish archipelago located in front of the Moroccan coast. Spring throughout the year attracts millions of tourist from all over Europe, especially those from colder climates.
Tenerife, one of the islands, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, specifically for its spectacular volcanic scenery. As far as kitesurfing is concerned, it offers light wind condition and little waves or radical days with over 40 knots and two metres waves.
Strapless or twintip share a broad area that can be divided into three main sectors such as “el Muelle” suitable for wave-hunters, “la Bahia” for freeride and “el Rincon” at the bottom of the bay where you can go big as well as train unhooked.
Wind and Weather
The Canary Islands enjoy an exceptionally mild climate. Located on the Atlantic, just north of the tropic of cancer, a short distance from the African coasts of Morocco and Western Sahara, it is below the “trade-winds” called Aliseos, which are constant winds from the north-east around 25 knots.
Winter temperatures are around 19 degrees, and summer temperatures are around 25-30 degrees. In July and August, there is a higher chance of finding oneself immersed in a wave of desert heat from Africa called “Calima”, but also strong winds over 35 knots. Rarely will it rain in the south of Tenerife while it will often rain in the northern part of the islands; odd.
Getting Around
The island of Tenerife is very well connected with the rest of Europe through its two airports and multiple seaports, giving the possibility of being reached from almost all of Europe with direct flights.
Once on the island, the central spot for kitesurfing, El Medano, is just 5 minutes away from the Tenerife south airports. A rental car is the best solution if you want to get around and visit the island, but even buses and taxi are easily accessible. It’s also possible to move between the islands with internal flights and ferries.
Food and Drink
El Medano has a variety of restaurants in town that offer tapas and beers for the majority of the day, and at night you can choose between Italian, Spanish, Canary and many others. Our locals fishing town has the best fresh fish ever!
Nightlife
El Medano is pretty active during the daytime and less at night, but there are a few pubs where you can spend the night listening to live music or having some drink somewhere! If you are looking for a proper party, you can reach the close town of Las Americas which hosts some of the best parties and nightlife
No Wind?
If you’re unlucky and do not to find wind during your holidays in Tenerife, do not despair, you can explore the whole islands other adventures on quads, trekking routes, climbing, mountain biking or surfing.
Several surf spots are depending on the direction of the swell or at calm sea; you can go diving and explore Tenerife marine life!
An island with 15 different microclimates, just waiting to be discovered!
Internet
All the islands have an adequate internet connection
Accommodation
El Medano has been a destination for watersports lovers for decades. From hotels to hostels to independents apartments, depending on the season you choose, prices can vary, but more or less will always remain affordable for most people.
I recommend organising some time in advance to secure an apartment in the small town of El Medano or sea view just behind the kiteboarding spot.

WHY SPAIN?
Because there are beaches where the wind is guaranteed almost all year round. In addition, the temperature is almost always pleasant here. Here are just two examples of how Spain is a great kitesurfing destination: Tarifa, in the province of Cadiz, has become a mecca for the sport, and hosts several World Cup events every year. In addition, one of the most famous representatives of this sport at the world level, 10-time world champion Gisela Pulido, was born in Spain and practices kitesurfing on our coast.
Kitesurf
TERRITORIES
The best kitesurf spots in Spain are mainly on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). The most famous of these places are Tarifa in the province of Cadiz and the area near the Strait of Gibraltar due to frequent winds. This is the south of Andalusia, where the provinces of Huelva, Cadiz, Malaga and Almeria are located. The region of Murcia, the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands complete the list of kitesurfing spots on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Nevertheless, schools where you can get training for this sport are located on almost the entire coast of Spain.
Kitesurf
Tips & Tricks
TIPS
First of all, you should remember that kitesurfing is only possible on beaches designated for water sports, in places marked with buoys, and not in areas reserved for swimming. Please note that on many beaches, this sport is prohibited on days when there are especially many bathers, that is, on weekends and during the summer months. In one case or another, kitesurfing should always be done in an area where there are no people and there are no obstacles located closer than 150 meters.
If you decide to start kitesurfing, you should definitely do it at a special school or under the guidance of a certified instructor. The duration of the initial course is usually at least two days. Never go to sea if you cannot control the kite perfectly.
Schools provide the necessary kitesurfing equipment.
Do not kitesurf alone; you should always have an escort with you who, if necessary, can help you or call for help from the shore. Remember the emergency number: 112.
Never try kitesurfing in strong winds, rain or thunderstorms. Be careful when the wind is blowing from the land, and always stay upwind (opposite from where the wind is blowing) from breakwaters, cliffs, breakwaters or ships so that the wind does not wash you against them.
Wear a helmet, suitable clothing for protection from the cold and a life jacket. It is also recommended to have gloves and a sling cutter with you in case of need. Never hold on to the kite lines with your hands.

What to do in Gran Canaria in November? That’s a good question, as this month is ideal for disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of Christmas celebrations on an island that is unique in its kind.
Travelling to Gran Canaria at this time of year makes winter seem far away, as the average temperature of 24ºC and the long hours of sunshine each day make it possible to continue enjoying the sea, sand, and clear skies at all times.
When you think that the best days of summer are almost over, Gran Canaria arrives and gives you happiness. Here, the sun doesn’t go away, the beaches keep their attraction and peace takes over the island.
Do you need more reasons to prepare a holiday on this miniature continent? Here are some of the best plans, activities, and things to do in November on the island of Gran Canaria.
Cycling around the island
The island of Gran Canaria has many routes for cycling enthusiasts, so you can cover the island from the south to the north, either on asphalt or in the mountains. If you’re a cycling enthusiast… you shouldn’t miss it!
Dance at the WOMAD Festival
From Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November, the WOMAD Festival takes place in Santa Catalina. It is a pop/rock music festival about music, arts and dances to showcase different musical rhythms and meet many international artists! In addition, there are various instrumental and vocal workshops, children’s courses, cabaret shows, lectures and more. Don’t miss it if you like to sing and dance!
See one of the best rallies in the world
Did you know that Gran Canaria is a land with passion for motor racing? In fact, thanks to its rugged terrain full of ravines, slopes, and winding roads, it’s one of the best settings for rally events.
The Rallye Villa de Teror / Gran Canaria Historic Rally, an asphalt category rally, will be held on the island from the 4th to the 5th of November. If we go south, on 12th November we have the 48th Subida de Fataga a Tunte, a mountain rally, coinciding with the race in San Bartolomé (VII Subida de Tunte). The month of November ends with the Gran Canaria Historic Rally Santa Lucía on 18th November, another asphalt rally.
Climbing the peaks of the island to see the aces in the motor industry up close is a unique experience that you can’t miss. That’s why it’s one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria in November.
Participate in the most southern marathon in Europe
Gran Canaria Maspalomas Marathon is an unrepeatable experience for all running enthusiasts. Running the 42 km of the race, feeling the sea breeze on the 20th of November, is something unique.
Let yourself be captivated by the natural space of the Maspalomas Dunes, let the Maspalomas Lighthouse guide you and try to reach the finish line of a race that will delight both professional and amateur runners.
This is a real opportunity to run on the road of personal improvement and euphoria, and share unforgettable moments. The effort is never in vain, and the goal awaits you. Think about it: you’re one step away from the best version of yourself.
Embrace diversity and tolerance
From the 7th to the 13th of November in the south of Gran Canaria, a truly peaceful party is being held for all ages: Winter Pride Maspalomas, the final celebration of gay pride in the European calendar year.
It’s a real outdoor party with an average outdoor temperature of 24ºC, which undoubtedly catapults it to the top of this list of things to do in Gran Canaria in November.
Come and enjoy a week of amazing events with live shows with international artists, pool parties, boat trips, parades, dance sessions and much more.
Have a great time at Holidayworld Maspalomas
Leaving aside all the above, without a doubt, to enjoy the best of the island you have to go to the south, to the largest entertainment and leisure centre in the Canary Islands: Holidayworld Maspalomas.
Only here you have the chance to go on the best attractions, go bowling in a professional bowling alley, sing in a special karaoke room, decipher the mysteries of an escape room, taste the flavours of the world in a gastronomic market, etc.
In short, it’s the place par excellence for leisure and entertainment on the island. A magical place where children and adults alike will have a great time. There’s no better plan to enjoy the best things to do in Gran Canaria in November than Holidayworld Maspalomas!
What To Expect Visiting Gran Canaria In November | Gran Canaria Winter Travel
Last Updated on October 16, 2022
When looking for a winter getaway in Europe, there’s not a huge amount of choice if you’re after warmer temperatures. The safest bet is to head to the Spanish Canary Islands which lay just off the coast of Africa. They are technically part of Spain, so have the Euro, EU data roaming and all the same entry requirements as the mainland. I visited Gran Canaria in November. So here’s a little look into what you could expect from the weather in Gran Canaria in November and what it’s like to visit the island in winter.
Weather in Gran Canaria in November
The best weather on the island in winter is along the south coast, this is where the majority of tourist resorts are. The mountains act like a bit of a barrier, pushing the clouds to the north of the island. In November, Gran Canaria’s south coast averages day time temperatures somewhere in the low 20c’s. I experienced some days of 20c and others with highs of around 24c. I still wore suncream everyday.
Rainbow over the north of Gran Canaria in November
Night time temperatures dropped to the mid teens. This meant that early mornings and during the evenings, I often needed a hoodie.
🌅Gran Canaria Sunset/Sunrise times in November
Sunrise: Between 7.15am – 7.30am
Sunset: Between 6.15pm – 6.05pm
If travelling from the UK, in comparison, Gran Canaria has approximately 2 hours of additional daylight hours, during the winter.
I stayed in the resort town of Taurito, in the south west of the island. It lays in a valley with high cliffs either side. The Taurito Princess is an east facing hotel. Even though sunrise was around 7am, the sun often didn’t rise above the cliff until around 9. 30am. As a solo traveller, I used to go and sit around the pool early in the morning. Due to the valley being in the shade, I often needed to keep my hoodie on until the sun finally made an appearance over the top of the cliff. Once the sun was out, I was an OK temperature until around 4pm!
Sunrise in Taurito in November at 7.15am
The west facing resorts on the opposite side of the valley, stayed in the shadows for a lot longer. (Such as the TUI BLUE Suite Princess and the Mogan Princess). This may be something you may want to keep in mind, as it does stay a little chillier in the shaded areas.
Rainy Days in Gran Canaria on the south coast
There is a chance that some days may be cloudy (I had a couple). On average, there are around 3 rainy days during the month. I was unlucky and had all 3 during my trip! Other than my day trip where it was constant rain, on the coast it was mainly just passing showers that only lasted a short time.
Central and Northern Gran Canaria
The Central and Northern regions of Gran Canaria are mountainous. Gran Canaria’s highest peak is Pico de las Nieves, with an elevation of 1949m/6394ft. The mountains can be around 10c colder than the lower coastal regions. They also experience more rainy days per month, with an average of 10 during November.
Rainy day in Teror, Gran Canaria
I took a day trip into the mountains and it did indeed pour with rain all day long. Putting it into perspective, on the day of my trip, Taurito was sunny and 21c. While in the mountains, it was 8c and rainy. I wore 2 hoodies and shorts and not going to lie, I was cold. The majority of people were wearing jeans and full length trousers in these areas.
The day before, my guide said the top of the mountain was 0c. It may have just been a freak cold snap, as he said that Mount Teide in Tenerife already had snow on it, which was rare for that early in the season. (Mount Teide has an elevation of 12,198ft, almost double the height of Gran Canaria’s highest peak).
Can You Swim in Gran Canaria in November?
Yes, you can swim in Gran Canaria in November. It may not be as comfortable as it is during the summer months, but it’s not too bad.
Sea Temperature in November
The sea temperature in Gran Canaria averages around 21c in November. This isn’t bad considering the air temperature was about the same. It was a little chilly when you first got in but you soon acclimatised to it. I found that the sea in Puerto Mogan felt a little warmer and was more calmer than the sea in Taurito.
Puerto Mogan Beach in Puerto de Mogan Gran Canaria
Swimming Pool Temperatures
This may vary from hotel to hotel. I stayed at the Taurito Princess, they have 2 main pools, one is heated during winter, one is not. The heated pool gets heated to roughly 21c, similar to the sea. Not awful, but a little cold when you first get in, especially if it’s on a cloudy day.
The second pool was not heated and it was FREEZING. They ran the aqua gym sessions in the cold pool. It was pretty grim until you warmed up from the exercise. One day I thought I had got sunburnt on my stomach (despite wearing SPF50 suncream) but no, it turns out the freezing cold pool water had made my skin go red!
waterparks
Lago Taurito on a cloudy day in November
Taurito is home to Gran Canaria’s only salt water waterpark. It is open every day during the winter. As far as I’m aware, I don’t think it is heated. The majority of the time there were only a couple of people in it at a time. If you can brave the water temperature, you’ll be able to enjoy the slides with zero lines! (It may be busier during school breaks).
This post is based on my experience visiting Gran Canaria in November. Weather can obviously be unpredictable. But for the most part you can guarantee slightly warmer weather than what the rest of the continent gets during the winter months!

Galeon Playa Apartments is located next to Jablillo Beach in Costa Teguise. The building is surrounded by a garden, 4 swimming pools are open on the territory.
The room we had was very comfortable for 4 adults. The rooms were cleaned every other day. The hotel is located in a tourist certre, beaches, bars and shops are close by. We found Costa Teguise is pobably the best tourist location of the island.
In the evening it was easy to find a public parking spot, during the day it is more challenging due to the visitors of the abeaches close by.
The breakfast and dinner we had for the half board rate was worth the money. The selection had a base sortiment, and there were always some “daily special” on the menu – mostly for the dinner, however after about a week things seem to repeat themself. Of course you shouldn’t expect fine dining.
The staff was very friendly and helpful both at dinner and at the reception.
