What to see, how to get to Lanzarote

After stealing the capital from Teguise in 1847, Arrecife managed to bring together the political and economic power of the island. Its privileged location on the east coast of Lanzarote made it one of the main connections with the rest of the islands of the Canary archipelago, with a port only surpassed in passenger and cargo volume by the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Despite its exponential growth, Arrecife is a different city compared to other capitals, as it has managed to preserve its beach culture and its quiet and welcoming character provided by the small port towns.

What to see and do in Arrecife

In the area closest to the sea we find Arrecife’s pleasant seafront, the most popular area of the city. As we dive deeper into the old town, we find historic streets with a seafaring flavour, museums and old buildings, among which the Church of San Ginés, the Casa de la Cultura or the Casa de los Arroyo stand out.

Castle of San José

Built in the bay to protect the island from pirate attacks, the Castillo de San José now houses the International Museum of Contemporary Art.

Calle Real

Located in the old part of town, Calle Real is one of Arrecife’s main shopping strips. It’s lined with shops and restaurants, making it one of the most pleasant and complete areas for strolling and shopping in Lanzarote.

San Gabriel Castle

The Castillo de San Gabriel is a small fortification built during the 16th century to protect the island from pirate attacks. It now houses the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum of Lanzarote.

El Charco de San Ginés

This quiet inlet of the sea was the first fishing village on the island. After being remodelled by César Manrique, the area was filled with bars and restaurants and then became one of the city’s main landmarks.

Las Bolas Bridge

Built in the 16th century as a drawbridge giving access to the Castle of San Gabriel, the Puente de las Bolas is one of the most emblematic symbols of Arrecife and one of the most photographed spots in the city.

Reducto Beach

Stretching out over the capital as a half a mile strip of golden sand surrounded by a beautiful seafront, Playa del Reducto is one of the best beaches in Arrecife.

Gastronomy

Arrecife showcases several restaurants serving delicious typical Canarian dishes washed down with mojo picón, as well as numerous businesses specialising in fresh fish and seafood. To accompany these delicacies, there is nothing better than one of Lanzarote’s excellent Denomination of Origin wines.

Shopping

If you like street markets, you have several options in Arrecife. On Wednesdays and Thursdays the city’s weekly street market takes place next to the Charco de San Ginés, while on Saturdays you can visit the tourist market where you can find handicrafts and buy typical Lanzarote products.

Thanks to its location in the centre of the island, Arrecife is an excellent starting point to discover the main tourist attractions of Lanzarote. Moving northwards, we find places of interest such as the Cueva de los Verdes, the Jameos del Agua or the Mirador del Rio.

To the east lies the Timanfaya National Park, a land of lava and ashes that make up the most volcanic area of the island, while if we head south, we’ll find impressive beaches of incomparable beauty.

How to get to Arrecife

The most common way to get to Arrecife is by car, as most visitors choose to hire a car to get around in comfort.

As the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife is the city with the best connections on the island, so if you’re not planning to hire a car in Lanzarote, you won’t have a problem getting to Arrecife by bus.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have dropped the recommendation for mandatory medical masks for travellers in airports and on board a flight.

However, both organisations still note that a face mask remains one of the best protections against the transmission of the virus.

Why you should Jet2 Tenerife for Winter Sun • Passport Stamps

As travel restrictions from the UK ease, a family holiday is long overdue for many of us! With Christmas and New Year out of the way, I was looking for somewhere budget-conscious that offered some much-needed winter sun. The Canary Islands looked ideal and Jet2 Tenerife flight and holiday deals were very attractive, with return flights and four nights all-inclusive (for all four of us) including flights, only £1300.

WHERE TO GO FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY SUN HOLIDAYS?

The Canary Islands are part of Spain, but sit as an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, around 60 miles from the African mainland. This makes them the ideal European destination for January and February sun holidays, as the Canary Islands stay warm while the rest of Europe stays a lot colder. They have a fantastic year-round climate, with average temperatures of 22C and sunny. This means that most resorts on the islands are open all year and many snow birds migrate there for the whole winter (oh to have no children still in school, eh?). The Canaries include Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and Ferro. Jet2Holidays offer family holidays that are not going to bust the budget, a nice beach, some fun activities and an easy transfer from the airport in Spain, which was exactly what we wanted.

Jet2holidays fly to Tenerife from 10 UK airports, including London Stansted, which is very convenient for us. There are also direct trains from Liverpool Street on the Stansted Express. I usually find Stansted a stress-free airport, and we passed through security within 15 minutes, even with all the extra checks for vaccines and passenger locator forms. (*Kids under 18 do not currently require a vaccine to travel to Spain). The kids were really excited to be back on a plane again and couldn’t wait for take off and to get to the hotel pool!

Flying with Jet2holidays

I have flown with Jet2holidays a few times now, and I have always been really impressed with them. They were particularly helpful to me when travelling with kids to Europe, always managing to seat us together and being cheerful and fun with the children. Little details like this make travelling enjoyable and stress-free for all of us. Because of this, they are always my first port of call for European package holidays, regardless of price.

For this trip, we have partnered with Jet2holidays to showcase the fun and ease of a winter sun break to Tenerife. This has in no way impacted my opinion of the company, our holiday or the hotel, and as always on passportstamps.uk, ALL opinions are my own.

The flight from London to Tenerife is 4hrs and 30 mins, which is longer than I would aim to fly for a European beach holiday in summer, but essential for that all-important winter sun in January or February. In fact, the total duration for our flight was just over 4hrs, so it was absolutely fine. Both kids napped and we also had some food on the plane, which helped keep us all fed and watered.

I usually wouldn’t talk much about airline food, but I was really impressed with the meals on Jet2holidays! They were from a brand called Yum.me. We all had pasta (Penne Arrabbiata or Mac’n’Cheese) and both were great. The total cost for four meals with two drinks, plus a tin of Pringles, was £32.

Where to stay with Jet2 Tenerife? How to chose an area and hotel

Before booking, I didn’t possess a great knowledge of Tenerife’s geography and areas, but the Paradise Park Fun Lifestyle hotel with Jet2Holidays caught my eye. Situated in Los Cristianos, but within walking distance to Playa de la Vistas, meant we had two great beaches nearby. You could walk to Los Cristianos Beach in 10 minutes, or a free half-hourly shuttle bus will drop you at a central point between the two beaches.

The Paradise Park Fun Lifestyle hotel had great reviews both on Jet2holidays and externally, plus some customer awards behind it. It also had a choice of pools and a kids club. We were looking for simple and clean, with some activities for the kids and this hotel ticked all the boxes. The package also includes a coach transfer to and from the airport, and this was incredibly smooth and hassle-free.

Jet2 Tenerife: The best destination for families to find Winter Sun

Travelling from the UK, most families looking for winter sun are hoping for the same thing: some warmer weather to escape the British freeze, a way to unwind after a busy Christmas and a chance to spend some quality time with the family. A Winter Sun package holiday with Jet2holidays Tenerife offered exactly that, but I was surprised to find there were also lots of other great activities and attractions in Tenerife for families too.

We had opted for four days, as Finn had to go back to school, but there is plenty to do in Tenerife alongside the swimming pool and fun activities put on by the hotels. A family could easily enjoy a 7-day holiday in Tenerife without feeling bored. We had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be the ideal destination for winter sun in Europe.

What is the best beach in Tenerife?

In the area we were staying, the best nearby beach is Las Vistas, which we could easily reach via the free hotel mini bus, or it was a 25-minute walk. However, for a quick beach trip from our hotel, the beach at Los Cristianos (10 minutes away) is perfectly fine. This beach is more industrial than Las Vistas. Many of the boat excursions leave from here, as well as the ferry terminal for travel between the Canary Islands.

Don’t expect white sand at Los Cristianos. Many beaches in Tenerife have volcanic sand, due to the active local volcano, Teide. However, the beach and sand are really clean. The kids didn’t even notice the darker colour sand. Along the promenade there are lots of cafes, shops and bars to stop and grab a drink or a bite to eat, all very affordable and laid-back.

Playa Las Vistas is definitely the nicer of the two beaches closest to our hotel. This beach is situated on the border of the Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos resorts, and has a more golden sand, as well as calm and clear waters to swim in. The hotel mini bus dropped us at the edge of the beach, so we headed to Las Vistas where we were planning to stay for the whole day.

Being winter, the beach was not busy at all and it seemed to be mostly the locals soaking up the sun. In summer, Playa Las Vistas gets really busy, with all the sun beds taken, lots of people bobbing in the sea and a very lively atmosphere. We really enjoyed the more tranquil experience of Las Vistas and the kids were just thrilled to be on the beach. Finn and I went for a swim in the water, which was cold at first but actually so refreshing once you started swimming. My advice would be to bring a hoodie or onesie to put on the kids when they come out of the water, because with an average temperature of 19’ in the winter months, they might feel the cold a bit more after being in the sea.

Again, Playa Las Vistas has a choice of shops, bars and restaurants along the seafront and these seemed slightly more upmarket, but to be honest were probably exactly the same! There is also a small mall at the end of the beach, with a bank and a supermarket.

One place I have to mention is Cabanas along the promenade at Los Cristianos. We were passing this colourful café and caught a glimpse of some delicious-looking food and cocktails being served. We were lucky enough to get a table (it’s tiny and was completely full, but a party was just leaving) and can confirm the food was as good as it looked. I can highly recommend the sangria! Service was so friendly and, in fact, the table next to us said they have been coming to Cabanas for seven years!

Things to do in Tenerife for families?

Voted the best water park in the world, and for good reason. Siam Park is an epic Thai-themed water park paradise, situated in none other than Tenerife itself. From slides with a seriously steep drop to lazy rivers, family flumes and a huge golden beach, Siam Park is a great place to spend a whole day, especially when it’s super hot and sunny. For kids, there is a huge ‘Lost City’ water playground. Tickets start from £32 adult, £22 child, but for the best deals book in advance.

This animal park is another beautiful place to spend the day while you’re in Tenerife. Originally created as a sanctuary for parrots in the 1970s, the park has expanded and is now regarded as one of the best zoos in Europe. As well as beautifully landscaped gardens and ponds, Loro Parque is also home to jaguars, tigers, penguins and dolphins. There are daily shows, feeding opportunities and educational tours. Tickets are best booked in advance and joint tickets to both Loro Parque and Siam Park are available.

Go Whale Watching

Tenerife is one of the top places for whale watching in Europe because the season lasts all year, so whether you’re visiting in the summer holidays or for winter sun, you are almost guaranteed to spot these beautiful mammals in the sea. There are around 21 different species of whale and dolphin in the waters around Tenerife and Los Cristianos Beach is one of the best areas from which to take a whale watching boat trip. Finn loves Octonauts, so he was very excited to spot the sea animals in the wild. Within half an hour, dolphins were playing around the bow and alongside the boat and we also saw Sperm Whales and a Humpback whale (more commonly seen in winter).

We took a two-hour trip on Travelin Lady, which was suitable for children and staff were very responsible with kids, as well as being entertaining. The company have been awarded a Blue Ship Flag, which indicates the vessel is sustainable and kind to the environment and animals. The price was €25 per adult, €10 per child and €5 for under 5s, and there was an option to upgrade if you wanted to have food and drink on board.

Teide National Park

Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest natural park in the Canary Islands. The unique ‘moon like’ landscape is home to Mount Teide, an active volcano that last erupted in 1909. Due to historic volcanic eruptions, surrounding Teide is a huge crater and some unusual and picturesque rock formations. The park is popular with hikers and rock climbers but visitors to Tenerife can take a day trip to the park to explore.

If you’re feeling athletic, you can hike to the top of Teide (and many people do), but at 3718 meters, Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain and the highest peak in Western Europe after the Alps. Thankfully, one family fun activity you can do is ride the Mount Teide Cable Car to the top in an enclosed gondola. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views without breaking a sweat and the kids will love the journey up. The cable car is open year-round, other than on 25th December and in high winds.

Go Star Gazing

After dark, head up to Mount Teide for a twinkly look at the night sky. The area is almost completely free from light pollution and one of the best places to stargaze in Europe. This easy and accessible stargazing tour starts after sunset, and lasts for around an hour. Experienced guides will point out different constellations and prominent stars, explaining how Greek mythology relates to the shapes and constellation positions. Then, each guest has the opportunity to observe objects and planets through the telescope. The tour is suitable for children but it can be cold on the crater at night, so wrap up warm (even if it doesn’t feel cold when you leave the hotel).

A visit to Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote Island

This is an article about what to do in Teguise town, one of the most important historic towns all over Canary Islands, Spain.

Teguise is the largest municipality on the island, reaching both East and West coasts. Teguise town was the old capital of Lanzarote from the first half of XV Century to the second half of the XIX century (year 1852). Since then, it lost practically all the parcels of power in Arrecife favor. It was the first most important civil and urban settlement in Canary Islands. Teguise is white like all the other towns on Lanzarote Island. It is clean, organized, safe and over all cute. Very beautiful. Immediately, the visitor gets the impression of being in a kind of important historic town, since every location in town seems to be surrounded by white historic monumental houses.

Teguise has no lack of heritage in landmarks. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is the main church and dates from the 16th century. It is located in the centre of town and, although it has been subsequently renovated due to frequent fires, its neo-Gothic style remained untouched.

Spínola Palace is one more of the good examples of historic architecture. It is located in the main square and dates from the 18th century. It was known as the House of the Inquisitors, for having hosted an Inquisition court. Later it had belonged to great lords and families and used as a dwelling for centuries.

Besides the concrete spots the best you can do in town is to take a stroll around, getting lost along the white street and do not miss small details. There are historic green gates and wooden windows with an additional smaller window embedded. Nice streets like Calle Los Árboles with very strange shaped trees or Callejón de la Sangre with its bloody legendary history. Moreover, our favourite detail: you can spot crosses on the streets, almost leaning against the walls that you play to hunt.

Centre of Teguise

The crosses of Teguise are illustrious witnesses of the town’s history. Originally there were 14, although the half of those were destroyed by time. Currently now, there are still seven survivor original ones made out of mahogany and seven more new restored. The elders who lived in the town remember how important these crosses were in the daily life, since, located in the main points of the town; they were main references of festive and religious events. In old days on the day of the Via Crucis, the owners of the closest houses to a cross set up a small altar in a room facing the street and that was the place where the local priest prayed as a stopover of the catholic procession. Today, locals still put flowers on the crosses on the important celebrations.

Teguise is as well a vivid town and every sunday they set a very famous street market in Constitution Square. In town, there some nice bars to have a drink under the sun admiring the white shinning buildings. Since the village is touristic, even being far from the coast, many of them are ruled by foreigners and they prepare international fashion drinks and snacks. If you want to stay on the local food we can recommend Ikarus y Acatife.

If you have time, we believe would be a nice idea to stick around, take your time to enjoy and stay for the night. There are not many options in town, since all on the island is one hour driving by car and plenty of people prefer to stay near the beach. There some appartments to rent you can easily find on booking.com or, if you are looking for a hotel, the best option is Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico.

Nearby, we can find Santa Barbara Castle, which is nowadays the Piracy Museum. You can find also Cesar Manrique Foundation, for those ones interested in the most famous artist from Lanzarote, and close to Teguise too, the amazing Cactus Garden created by him.

La Villa De Teguise – Lanzarote Information

Teguise or La Villa as its known locally, was the capital of Lanzarote before it moved to Arrecife in the mid 18th century. The town has some incredible buildings, cobbled streets and lots of history. Teguise is known by many for the Sunday market, which is huge and if you’re only going to one market during your holiday, it should be this one. Visit Teguise on any other day, maybe not a Monday as this tends to be the standard day off, and you will find a charming place to wander around with some really interesting and individual shops. Teguise was declared a village of historic and artistic heritage (Conjunto Arquitectónico Histórico-Artístico) in the 80’s by the Spanish government.

Maciot de Béthencourt demarcated the village in 1418, its the oldest settlement in the Canary Islands, he named it after his wife and daughter of the old King Guardafía, the Guanche Princess, Teguise. The area of Teguise was the obvious place for the capital of Lanzarote due to its central and elevated position. Teguise has a violent history, it was ransacked and devastated by invasions from pirates and privateers (Sir Francis Drake, who was known as El Draque), despite its presence of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara on the top of Mount Guanapay – you can see the old street of Sangre (blood) that runs behind the main plaza named so in memorial of a violent attack during 1618, due to the blood flowing in the street following the massacre.

In the centre of La Villa stands the church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe which dates back to 1428, this is the church tower that is visible around the village, on the other side of the Plaza de la Constitución (also known as the Plaza de Leon, due to the lion statues on guard) is the Casa Museo Palacio Spinola, one of Teguise’s noble mansions which started construction in 1730 but took 50 years to build due to the volcanic eruptions on the island at the time. This building was originally known as the Inquisitors House, in the 18th century it was home to the Feo Peraza family and then in the 19th century changed hands to the Spinola family. The house is now a museum, it was renovated in the 70’s by César Manrique and is open to the public daily from 9am until 4pm. It provides an interesting insight as to the home life of a nobleman in the 18th century.

Also facing the main square in La Cilla, the locals used to pay their taxes here, its quite apt that today it’s the only bank in the village!

Palacio del Marqués took 32 years to build and was completed in 1455, now owned by a German couple Jürgen and Antje, the Patio del Vino offers a vast range of wines from around the world with tapas. If you’re a wine connoisseur or want to know more about the local history, you should pop in and say hello, Jürgen is a great host and the central courtyard has a wonderful ambience. This building was the Canarian government’s headquarters for 270 years, it’s said there is a secret meeting hall underneath the house which has a tunnel leading to the Castillo Santa Bárbara!

Some other spectacular buildings are the Iglesia de Santo Domingo (circa 1726) situated next to the Ayuntamiento de Teguise, Convento de San Francisco (circa 1590) is the first big building on the roundabout and the Ermita de la Vera Cruz is tucked away in a side street off the Parque La Mareta.

Teguise has some great authentic tapas bars and restaurants, there is a “Ruta de Tapas“ held in December most years when you could try a local delicacy and drink for €2.50. You can also find the restaurant Ikarus just off the main plaza, still one of my favourites!

There are some really interesting shops in Teguise, which can be hidden behind stalls on a Sunday, as Teguise is fairly close to Famara there are a selection of surf shops, interesting furniture places, lots of local artisan arts and crafts with galleries, handmade clothes and jewellery etc. Many of the Teguise properties have a selection of shops in them, if you see an open door way, have a wander through and see what’s inside!

As well as wonderful architecture, Teguise has a fantastic selection of old doors, windows and chimneys, each municipality of Lanzarote has their own style that changed through the centuries and if you know your history you can date the buildings in this way. Have a wander through the streets, you will see all different designs – some windows are all wood just with flaps that hinge open, others are painted Lanzarote Green, some are part green and white, others have internal shutters, all designed to keep the houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Teguise has some traditions of its own as well as Spanish and Canarian ones, they have the Los Diabletes de Teguise, the dance of the little devils which you can see as part of Carnival in February / March, there is the Día de la Cruz in the first week of May, Día de Canarias on the 30th May, the Corpus Christi Salt Carpets in June, the Romería Virgen de las Nieves on the 5th August and many other cultural events planned throughout the year.
