Tenerife holidays in Europe’s island oasis

Magical experiences mark you forever, and your next Tenerife holidays will be one of these special memories. You’ll discover extraordinary landscapes, relax in the peace of natural surroundings, and enjoy the comforts of world-class accommodation. Your adventure will let you leave the European winter behind, but remain on the continent, and you’ll be surrounded by a local community that has successfully welcomed international tourism without renouncing its identity.

Located slightly north of the Tropic of Cancer, Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary archipelago. Its unique geography has allowed it to protect the largest number of endemic species in Europe, and it has been named a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. With an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, Tenerife has long been called the “island of eternal spring”. Thanks to the many airline routes to other parts of Europe, the world has learned of its treasures, including its rich local culture and cuisine, cultural institutions like the Adán Martín auditorium, luxury hotels and, of course, incredible beaches on the shores of the Atlantic.

Nature in its purest form

Of volcanic origin, Tenerife’s arid landscapes display a rich range of ocher colors, but its varied microclimates have also maintained ancient green forests of extraordinary dimensions, and natural pools along many of its beaches. There are hundreds of plant and animal species that can only be found in this corner of the continent, in protected areas like Anaga Rural Park. If variety is the spice of life, these marked contrasts of tones, texture and panoramic views create the perfect setting for unforgettable secret escapes to Tenerife.

From any part of the island, the Tenerife skyline is dominated by the Teide. At a peak of 3715 meters above sea level, the volcano is the highest in Spain and the third highest in the world, after Hawaii’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Equally imposing and emblematic, it is the center of the Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tenerife’s 342 kilometers of coastline provide the sun and beach tourism that so many love, but the island is a jewel worthy of exploration no matter your favorite holiday activities. Hiking, landscape photography, sailing or dolphin watching, or exclusive guided tours of protected nature reserves like the Barranco del Infierno can all be part of your Costa Adeje holidays.

Eternal spring

What is the warmest place in Europe in January? No matter the time of year, the Canary Islands offer the best climate in Europe, perfect for taking a few days off from the cold winter. And among the islands, the southwest of Tenerife offers the best of the best. The Macaronesian trade winds are responsible for moderating the Tenerife weather, producing different environments depending on the height and position of each location, with higher humidity and rain in the north and northeast and a lower level of rainfall in the southwest, where Abama is located.

An easily accessible destination

When you want to disconnect from your urban routine, this holiday destination is just a stone’s throw away. With two airports, one in the north, closer to the capital, Santa Cruz, and another in the south that receives most of the air traffic from the European capitals, Tenerife holidays are accessible at any time of the year, even if just for a quick weekend away. According to data from the Cabildo de Tenerife, of the 5 million foreign tourists who visited the island in 2019, 35% were British, aided by the large number of London to Tenerife flights. There has also been a marked increase in Oslo to Tenerife flights; according to these same data, the influx of Norwegian tourists to the island registered a growth of almost 10% between 2018 and 2019. Another notable route is Iceland – Tenerife, with the Nordic country’s own carrier, Icelandair, operating out of Tenerife Sur airport.

Family vacation

The memories built on family vacations are priceless, and Tenerife is a great destination for travel with children and teenagers. Siam Park is considered one of the best water parks in the world, and has a wave pool whose swells reach 4 meters. Loro Park has the largest collection of parrots in the world. And besides these, there are innumerable leisure options for your little ones, like walking through the Enchanted Forest of Anaga, or going up the Teide by cable car with magnificent views from every angle.

Outdoor sports

For those who love outdoor activities, the island’s springlike temperatures are a guarantee your plans won’t be derailed due to bad weather during your stay. At Abama, you can play golf on a professional course, lounge by a swimming pool that’s never crowded, or improve your serve at the Abama Tennis Academy with individual classes adapted to your level. And the constant pull of the Atlantic Ocean adds the possibility of adventure to any plan. Sightings of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat is an experience at your fingertips; just travel to the nearby Los Gigantes and join an expedition. Or if you crave action, there are any number of watersport companies ready to help you test your skills while taking in the impressive landscapes from the water.

Centuries of history

Interacting with locals is one of the best ways to understand a destination, and the diverse demographic and cultural history of the Canary Islands has resulted in a mix of influences that is one of the most fascinating parts of any visit to Tenerife. Hospitable and open, the island residents have welcomed international tourism without renouncing what makes them unique, and visitors can catch glimpses of history almost anywhere they turn.

As heirs of the pastoral traditions of the Guanche people, Tenerife residents keep ancient recipes like gofio alive, preserve the caves that were their ancestors’ refuges, and even, on the neighboring island of La Gomera, sometimes use a whistled language to communicate that has been used for centuries to speak over long distances. Today, this preservation has earned it a distinction as a World Heritage Site.

International attractions

The capital city of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, hosts the second-most famous Carnival celebration in the world, distinguished by massive attendance and performances and parades of high quality. Sister city San Cristóbal de La Laguna has a historical center that has been named a World Heritage Site thanks to its impeccable state of conservation. And a tour of each of the 31 municipalities of the island will reveal something special that makes a visit a must.

Tranquil tourism

In the southwest, the town of Guía de Isora is a model destination that has opted to reinforce its cultural attractions and pursue high-end, high quality tourism for modern visitors who seek exclusivity, personalized services, and a low-key environment. In fact, this evolution of the tourism sector is evident all over the island. Where once the trend pulled strongly towards mass accommodation with the barest of services, today Tenerife opts for quality accommodation that delivers comfort and tranquility. The best Tenerife hotels guarantee maximum relaxation and privacy, and deliver considered architecture in harmony with its surroundings. Five-star services meet the needs of any visitor, and encourage him or her to return again and again.

Privacy and exclusive services

Designing extraordinary experiences for guests is the hallmark of 5 star hotels in Tenerife. Guests want independent accommodation as well as personalized, high-quality services. The modern Tenerife visitor seeks a quiet destination where she can relax, but with a dining, sports, wellness and leisure offer that is attractive and varied enough to stand out. With one of the best golf courses in Europe, Michelin restaurants on the grounds, and a secluded beach cove, Las Terrazas de Abama has won a Travellers’ Choice award and risen to the top of the ranks of the island’s hotel offer. This aparthotel Tenerife comprises 151 suites-only private apartments with impressive views of the Atlantic and large terraces or private gardens where anyone will feel at home.

Sustainability at the core

As part of this extraordinary island and community, Abama Hotels is deeply committed to sustainability and to reducing our environmental impact more each year. We participate in conservation and social projects, emphasize local hiring, apply for certifications that require low CO2 emissions, and use our resources carefully. Our apartments and facilities allow you to enjoy Tenerife accommodation while contributing to sustainable practices. Whether here for a short visit or a longer stay as a digital nomad, the facilities offered by our hotels, in combination with the attractions of this incredible island, make a stay at Abama one you’ll never forget.

For those bent on exploring new corners of Europe, Tenerife holidays will tick every box. Here, tourism is sustainable in its protection of the area’s natural and cultural heritage; conscious in its offer of slow tourism bereft of haste and stress; and authentic in its focus on the local traditions and attractions that make a holiday an adventure in enrichment.

TENERIFE is the largest (more than 2000 sq. km) and the most visited island of the Canary archipelago: more than half of all “Canarian” tourists come here every year.

It is located in the center of the archipelago, between the island of Gran Canaria in the east and the neighboring island of Gomera in the southwest. In the language of the Guanches – the ancient inhabitants of the island – Tenerife means “snow mountain”. The island owes its name to the volcano Teide, thanks to which Tenerife is the highest island in the Atlantic Ocean.

The mountain range divides Tenerife into two climatic zones: the humid, lush north and the arid, sunny south. That is why Tenerife is called “the island with two faces”.

The richness of nature and relief surprises with its diversity: the green north contrasts with the dry south, the snow cap of the Teide volcano rises above the lunar landscapes of volcanic deserts, and the steep rocky shores, rising from the foamy ocean for tens of meters, stun with their majesty and power.

Tenerife is the most developed among the Canary Islands in terms of tourism infrastructure. Comfortable hotels and beaches, restaurants of multinational cuisine, zoos and water parks, sports and health centers, various excursions and sea activities make the rest on this island unforgettable for both adults and their children.

Tenerife is the ideal choice for those who want to enjoy the climate and the sea without giving up the comforts, cultural activities and other pleasures of a full resort life.

The capital of the island – Santa Cruz de Tenerife – is located on the northeast coast in the depths of a small bay. This is the largest city in Tenerife, the most attractive for tourists in February – the month of carnivals.

Puerto de la Cruz is the main resort on the north coast of Tenerife and the island’s second most important resort after Playa de las Americas in the south. Despite the countless number of hotels and restaurants, Puerto de la Cruz remains a distinctive Canarian city.

Playa de las Americas is the largest resort in the south of Tenerife and the main resort of the island. Most Russian tourists prefer to rest in the south – there is no bad weather here and the sun shines all year round. Los Cristianos adjoins Las Americas – another, but quieter tourist center in the south of Tenerife.

Unique, mild climate. Always warm, no sweltering heat. Easy acclimatization, unlike most “exotic” countries.

Despite the location, this is Europe. Friendly and cultural residents, understandable laws. Truly European service.

There are no poisonous snakes and insects, there are no mammals dangerous to humans.

Calm environment for a relaxing holiday. There is no ground for national conflicts, political and religious extremism.

Clean ocean, unpolluted air. Volcanic sand on the beaches of Tenerife has healing properties.

Charters from Moscow arrive at the Reina Sofia airport in the south of Tenerife, near the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. The airport is connected by highway to the cities of Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz.

Where is La Palma? | The US Sun

LA Palma is a tourist hotspot for Brits boasting sunkissed beaches, cobbled streets and trekking routes.

But the holiday destination is also home to one of Europe’s active volcanoes.

Where is La Palma?

La Palma is an island off Spain in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The island forms part of the Canary Islands, which are located off the northwestern coast of Africa.

It falls under the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and has a large volcanic caldera about six miles in diameter that was established as a national park.

The island is a tourist hotspot for Brit holidaymakers who flock to its beaches every summer.

The average time for a direct flight from London to La Palma is just under four-and-a-half hours and they regularly leave from the capital every day.

La Palma’s economy revolves around irrigation-based farming and bananas, tomatoes, and tobacco along with embroidery are its biggest exports.

What happened when the volcano erupted?

La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on Sunday, September 19, 2021, and is still exploding Monday, September 20.

The latest explosion occurred as a result of an earthquake under the volcano’s base on September 11, 2021, that slowly migrated to the surface.

More than 20,000 earthquakes were registered in one week, Reuters reports, sending lava shooting into the air and streaming in rivers towards houses in two villages in the south of the island.

Authorities began evacuating the vulnerable and some farm animals around 3. 15pm local time on September 19.

2

Two hours later, lava spilled down the hillside from five fissures, leading to the evacuation of the towns El paso and Los Llanos de Aridane.

Night-time video footage showed lava shooting hundreds of metres into the sky and at least three lava-deluged rivers of molten rock pouring down the hill.

Canary Island President Angel Victor Torres told a press conference on Sunday that around 5,000 were evacuated and no injuries were reported so far.

When has the volcano previously erupted?

Cumbre Vieja has exploded twice previously: once in 1949 and again in 1971.

The first eruption took place on June 24, 1949, and lasted for more than a week.

The onset of the eruption was witnessed by a shepherd tending his flock on a flank of the volcanic mountainside and was, too, caused by earthquakes.

The 1971 eruption occurred at the southern end of Cumbre Vieja.

Canary Islands

La Palma is one of the seven main inhabited islands of the Canary archipelago, which are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Small in area (728 sq. km.), La Palma is the fifth largest and third largest in terms of the number of inhabitants of the Canary Islands. nine0003

Lagging behind the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife in tourism development, La Palma can easily boast of its originality, tranquility and lush nature. It is noticeable even from the coast. Rising from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to a height of 2426m is a huge mountain, all covered with greenery. The north of the island can surprise with its Laurel-Cherry forests, densely overgrown ravines, which are most often covered with fog.

The coast of La Palma is mostly rocky, which means there are few beach areas. But in their magnificence, they are not nearly inferior to the beaches of other Canary Islands. nine0003

The most favorite for tourists is the Cancajos beach, located near the village of Breca Baia, which consists of several bays. The water in them is so clear that it is simply difficult to resist diving. And in the village of Puerto de Naos, there is a delightfully beautiful black sand beach.

For lovers of the beautiful and unique, the island has national reserves – Parque Natural de Las Nieves and Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja. It is here that you can walk along specially laid paths and enjoy a truly rare natural beauty. And these beautiful forests are preserved thanks to the fertility of young volcanic soils and a large abundance of water. nine0003

On La Palma there is also the Palmitos Park – it is the largest butterfly sanctuary, but you can also meet exotic birds, the number of which is about 230 species.

Another natural attraction is the volcanic ridge (La Caldera de Taburiente). Stretching from the north across the island, it ends in the south with Tenegia volcano, which last erupted in 1971.

La Palma is called the most beautiful of the islands of the Canary archipelago. And the absence of industry preserves a special mood: regularity and calmness, which is literally immediately transmitted to people who have chosen this particular island for recreation. nine0003

In addition to rich nature and magnificent architecture, La Palma also surprises with its cuisine. Traditional cooking with olive oil, the quality of vegetable and animal fat, lard and a variety of products are appreciated all over the world. And that’s why Spanish cuisine is classified as a tourist attraction.

Behind the current tranquility of La Palma lies an island rich in history. This can be seen in the number of architectural sights of the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de La Palma. In a small town with a population of 18,000 inhabitants, there are many narrow streets, where many old buildings are located: the Church of the Savior, with a high bell tower (Iglesia Matriz de El Salvador) built in 1503; Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) in Italian Renaissance style, which has been standing since 1569G.; stone fountain 1776 All this can be seen in the city center on a small triangular Plaza of Spain.

Another maritime museum in the capital is a life-size model of Columbus’ ship, the Santa Maria.

It is impossible not to mention the fortress of Santa Catalina (Castillo de Santa Catalina), which, during the time of piracy, protected the city from attacks.

The Spanish constitution maintains free religion, but the predominant religion is Catholicism. Therefore, La Palma has its own religious sites – this is the sanctuary of the patroness of the island Nueatra Senora de Las Nievas (Madonna of the Snows), which is located north of the capital. Once every five years, on the feast of the Appearance of the Madonna, a great event takes place for local residents, the Madonna is brought to the church. And on May 3, you can see an unusual holiday called the Day of the Cross in Santa Cruz de La Palma, where locals organize a competition of decorated crosses. nine0003

One of the largest resorts on La Palma is Puerto de Naos with excellent black sand beaches. This is a small village in which the inhabitants are focused only on meeting the needs of tourists.

Good holidays, combined with gourmet cuisine and ancient architecture, all this will be a great addition for lovers of solitude with nature.

PR-TF 6.3 Benijo – Cross of Draguillo•Parque Rural de Anaga

we did the loop clockwise, the climb was steep at El Draguillo but comfortable. The descent was gentler but often “slippery” because of the gravel. The coastal view is perfect.
The small car park was full, we had to park in a bend 1 km below.

Beautiful hike. Quite some elevation to but since its short its totally fine. The path is very good, rocky with some natural stairs. Doable in sneakers but I would recommend hiking shoes if it rains or in morning as rocks can get slippery.

A very beautiful route, the most impressive thing for me was the Zapata viewpoint, which gave me impressive views of Mount Teide.

Description

Anaga Landscape Park (Spanish: Parque Rural de Anaga) is located in the northeastern part of Tenerife and covers an area of 14,418. 7 hectares. This is one of the oldest parts of the island, resulting from volcanic activity around 7 – 9million years ago. The park is located on the territory of the Anaga mountain range (Spanish: Macizo de Anaga) with absolute heights up to 1024 m above sea level (top of the Cruz de Taborno). The relief of the park is characterized by significant elevation changes, it is characterized by deep gorges with steep slopes (Spanish: barranco) that have arisen as a result of erosion processes, the coastline is also steep, with steep cliffs. The Anaga mountain range is composed mainly of volcanic rocks, primarily basalts, in some places alkaline rocks come to the surface – phonolites and trachytes. nine0012

Due to the difficult terrain, the territory of the park is relatively poorly developed by humans. Currently, there are 26 small villages on it, in which a total of only about 2,500 people live.

The northern coast of the Anaga massif is under the influence of the trade winds, which bring moisture-saturated air from the ocean. Trade winds create favorable conditions for the development of moist broad-leaved laurel forests, which include many relic species. At present, the remains of laurel forests occupy a relatively small area in the central part of the park, in many places their place was taken by forests dominated by Erica arborea and Myrica faya. Juniper sparse forests are very rare, the area of which has been greatly reduced due to human economic activity. The southern slopes are dominated by formations of succulent shrubs dominated by spurges. Peculiar vegetation is characteristic of rocky outcrops. nine0012

The flora of the park includes more than two dozen local endemic species: crassula Aeonium volkerii, Monanthes anagensis and M. wildpretii; legumes Lotus dumetorum and Teline pallida ssp. pallida; violet Viola anagae; Cistus chinamadensis ssp. chinamadensis; kermek Limonium macrophyllum; umbrella Pimpinella anagodendron; villous Pterocephalus virens; borage Echium leucophaeum and E. simplex; labiales Bystropogon odoratissimus, Micromeria glomerata, M. rivas-martinezii and Sideritis dendro-chahorra; Compositae Argyranthemum lemsii, A. sundingii, Cheirolophus tagananensis, Gonospermum revolutum, Sonchus tectifolius and Tolpis glabrescens. nine0012

Canary Islands hotel offers shelter to migrants in need

By RENATA BRITOApril 13, 2021 GMT

PUERTO RICO DE GRAN CANARIA, Spain (AP) — When hotel director Calvin Lucock and restaurant owner Unn Tove Saetran said goodbye to one of the last groups of migrants staying in one of the seaside resorts they manage in Spain’s Canary Islands, the British-Norwegian couple didn’t know when they would have guests again.

They had initially lost their tourism clientele to the coronavirus pandemic, but then things had taken an unexpected turn.

A humanitarian crisis was unfolding on the archipelago where tens of thousands of African men, women and children were arriving on rudimentary boats. The Spanish government — struggling to accommodate 23,000 people who disembarked on the islands in 2020 — contracted hundreds of hotel rooms left empty due to the coronavirus travel restrictions.

The deal not only helped migrants and asylum-seekers have a place to sleep, it also allowed Lucock to keep most of his hotel staff employed.

But the contract ended in February and thousands of people were transferred out of the hotels and into newly built large-scale migrant camps. Or so they thought.

“We realized that we had a queue of people standing outside when we closed the doors,” said Saetran, a former teacher, in a recent interview with The Associated Press at the Holiday Club Puerto Calma in southern Gran Canaria.

Some of the “boys,” as she calls them, had ended up on the streets after being expelled from government-funded reception centers. Others had chosen to leave the official system fearing overcrowded camps and forced returns to the countries they fled from. With the rooms still empty, Saetran said she couldn’t sleep knowing the migrants would be left on the street.

So they reopened the hotel doors again, this time at their own expense.

“They were very scared, they didn’t have anywhere to go, and there wasn’t any other solution,” said Saetran who has lived in the Canary Islands with Lucock since the ’90s and has a Spanish-born daughter.

Today, the family, with the help of some of the hotel staff and other volunteers, provide food through Saetran’s restaurant, shelter through the hotel and care to 58 young men, including eight unaccompanied minors, mainly from Morocco and Senegal as well as other West African countries, who fell out of the official migrant reception and integration system for one reason or another.

One of them is Fode Top, a 28-year-old Senegalese fisherman who left his country in search of better work in Europe last November. The fish in Senegal, he says, have disappeared from the ocean following years of industrial fishing by Chinese and European vessels. Nowadays one can hardly make a living being a fisherman.

To make matters worse, Top’s 3-year-old son needed life-saving and expensive heart surgery. To pay medical bills, Top borrowed money he wasn’t able to pay back, resulting in threats.

“If I return to Senegal I will have problems. Many problems,” Top said.

The official camps have also been plagued with problems, with reports of overcrowding, insufficient food, unsanitary conditions and lack of legal and medical assistance. Most recently, police intervened with rubber bullets in the largest camp on the island of Tenerife after a fight broke out between two groups of residents.

The Canary Islands and their year-round sunny beaches normally attract millions of northern European tourists each year. But for the migrants at Puerto Calma, staying in the hotel is no vacation. The islands were just meant to be a stepping stone toward stability, security and employment in continental Europe, not their final destination. Today, it is a place of limbo for thousands who were denied access to the Spanish peninsula and live in waiting, unable to work and send money back to their families.

“They’ve come here looking for a better life, one of the reasons I came to Spain,” said 47-year-old Lucock. There’s only one difference: “They are not born with a European passport so they can’t travel in the same way I can.

On a recent evening, as they ate dinner, Saetran got a text message: Six young men, including alleged minors, had been sleeping in the streets of Las Palmas for days. She looked at her husband, who runs the hotel, for approval. He rolled his eyes and took a deep breath.

The next day, the six boys arrived at the hotel carrying their belongings in plastic bags. Saetran and Lucock welcomed them and gave them two rooms. Both of them know the hotel won’t be able to shelter migrants forever, but for now they have a place to sleep.

“If we can play a small part in making them feel safe and secure while they are here, then I feel like we’ve achieved something,” Lucock said.

As the men wait month after month to either move north or be returned south, Lucock and Saetran try to keep them busy. Volunteers come three times a week to give English and Spanish classes. The athletic ones play soccer on the beach or run up the mountain with locals. There’s also a lot of checkers and card games.

The couple says they hope to continue helping young migrants even after tourism kicks off again, and are setting up a charity.

“In our culture we have so much that we forget to appreciate the small things,” Saetran said.

Holidays in the Canary Islands with children: we are going to the islands of eternal spring

First, let’s debunk some very popular myths about holidays in the Canary Islands in general and holidays with children in particular.

Myth one: it is very expensive. Not true. Or rather, not the whole truth. A well-developed tourism infrastructure allows you to choose both expensive and very budget options for recreation.

Myth two: warm regions require acclimatization. In the case of the Canary Islands, this is not at all the case. Their climate, especially if you chose not a hot summer, but autumn or spring, does not require acclimatization. nine0003

Myth three: there is nothing for children to do there. This is a vacation for adults. Complete, dear ones! Your kids will be there, perhaps, even more interesting than you. In addition, holidays in the Canary Islands can be extremely beneficial for children suffering from chronic lung diseases and allergies.

    But, first things first.

Where are we going, where is it better to stay

The fact is that when talking about the Canary Islands, most of us automatically mean Tenerife. If you look, it’s quite a logical point of view. There are excellent beaches, hotels, well-developed recreation infrastructure. However, if you don’t like crowds, it is quite possible to pay attention to, say, El Hierro, if you love history – to La Gomera, where Christopher Columbus himself lived for some time. Ecotourism lovers will love La Palma. However, if you have time, it is quite possible, by staying in Tenerife, to visit all or almost all the islands of the archipelago. Local travel companies can provide this opportunity. nine0003

So we decided to stay in Tenerife. When choosing a hotel, decide what requirements you place on the hotel where you decide to stay with your children: the level of service, catering, location. Well, the price per room, of course. The choice here is quite large. We can only recommend a few that deserve special attention.

For example, the five-star Iberostar Grand Hotel Anthelia will offer you, in addition to the standard set of services, a children’s pool with heated fresh water, a playground and a playroom, a baby cot, special clubs for children from 4 to 7, 8-12 years old and for teenagers , as well as other pleasant additions in the form of entertainment programs, discos and sporting events. For the little ones, you can even hire a nanny right at the hotel. nine0003

The Mediterranean Palace Hotel offers its guests, in addition to everything listed above, also excursions to the most interesting places in Tenerife and a special children’s menu.

By the way, about the menu. In the Canary Islands, in pursuit of vacationers, more and more hotels offer such a service as “all inclusive”. A good example is the Meliá Jardines del Teide. In other words, families with children will not have to think about where, how and what to eat. Moreover, in some cases, hotels offer a specialized children’s menu for their little guests. nine0003

And one more thing. Quite good reviews are received not only about fashionable, but also rather modest hotels. Apartamentos Amazonas, for example, or Tenerife Ving. So, in some cases, you should not chase the stars, it is better to evaluate the services offered and make your own choice.

Activities for children in the Canary Islands

This fertile region provides your children with many opportunities for recreation. In addition to a purely beach one, without which, however, it is also impossible, you can actively go in for sports, get acquainted with the history, culture and life of local residents, try different new goodies every day, or even see a real jousting tournament. Boat trips are very popular, which can be done both on an ordinary ship and a real submarine. And also surfing, diving, fishing, golf. Not to mention the discos and all kinds of holidays that take place here almost constantly. You will be especially lucky if you find yourself in the Canary Islands in February. The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host the festival, which is said to be in second place in terms of scale after the Brazilian one. Children here are just as full participants as adults. nine0003

The Canary Islands are the perfect place to celebrate Christmas or New Year. And on January 6, a special children’s holiday is held here.

    What to visit with children

First of all, of course, Loro Park. The most “promoted” and popular among tourists place in Tenerife. It is in the north of the island, in Puerto de la Cruz. Works all year round. Known primarily for the world’s largest collection of parrots. And here you can also see unique families of penguins, collections of orchids, admire the gorgeous shows of dolphins, killer whales and other marine life. Something, in a word, a cross between a zoo, a dolphinarium and a botanical garden. You can walk around the park all day, moving from one show to another, from playgrounds to attractions, from “free access” parrots to monkeys or flamingos. nine0003

With Siam Park here in Tenerife, the situation is a bit more complicated. The place, no doubt, is iconic. There are not very many attractions in this water park, but each of them is thought out and designed so that your adrenaline will whip over the edge. Preschoolers on them, how to put it mildly, should be very careful. By ourselves “break away” – yes. Teenagers are fine. But with kids it is better to go to Aqualand, located right there, nearby. This is also a water park, but more traditional and more suitable for children from 3 to 5 years old. There, the slides are lower, and the parents will be calmer. nine0003

The next object of the “children’s excursion” is the Monkey Park. This is the real home of lemurs and their other relatives. It is curious that many of the inhabitants of the park live almost in freedom and you can easily communicate with them.

Next to the monkey park is the eagle park. Or “Jungle Park”, as it is also called. The second name is more accurate. If earlier eagles were indeed demonstrated in the park, now you can see sea lions, leopards and jaguars, raccoons and crocodiles here. nine0003

Of course, this is not a complete list of places worth visiting if you come to the Canary Islands with children. Someone will like climbing a volcano, someone will prefer to ride a camel. Well, and so on. Options, we have already said, a lot.

    Useful information

Be prepared to be asked to show what you are carrying when you enter the monkey park.

INFORMATION

Las Montañas del Fuego are the unusual result of the eruptions in the south of  Lanzarote in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A spectacle of red craters,  lava flows and lunar landscapes that reflect the burning of the earth and its  uncontrollable force.

Its 200 kilometers of extension are part of the Timanfaya National Park, where  you can contemplate one of the largest volcanic activity in the world, both for the  immense number of materials thrown by fire, as for its spectacular duration: six  years between 1730 and 1736 where the insides of the island did not stop  roaring.

Rising above the earth is the Islote de Hilario, from which a sea of lava with 25  craters can be observed, which impacts the traveler as well as fascinates them,  because in spite of the abrupt and overwhelming scenery, few places in the world  contain such latent and dormant energy.

Impressed by the volcanic beauty, César Manrique devised the Ruta de los  Volcanes, a route of about 14 kilometers along the main core of the eruptions  where visitors can see a large concentration of caves, craters, lava mantles and  impressive volcanic rocks from a bus conditioned to cross the volcanic walls of  this moving lunar landscape.

Manrique also gave free rein to his imagination, giving life to El Diablo  restaurant, a lively and impressive gastronomic space that blends in with its  surroundings, further enhancing its tourist, artistic and cultural interest. And while its famous oven uses the earth’s own heat for delicious grilled food,  ten meters below our feet the depth reaches almost 300 degrees, a force that  slides to the surface and can be seen through a series of unforgettable  thermodynamic experiments.

El Diablo Restaurant

El Diablo restaurant, located on the Islote de Hilario, offers grilled meats and  vegetables cooked by the temperature of the earth itself: authentic cooking in  the heat of the volcano.

This phenomenon is made possible thanks to its characteristic oven: a five meter-deep pit that reaches temperatures of 250 degrees

Overlooking the volcanic rock through a large circular glass window, visitors can  appreciate Manrique’s ability to blur the boundaries between man’s hand  and nature, while also marveling at the center’s internal architecture and his  creative inventiveness.

  • What to see
  • What to do
  • The sculpture of El Diablo de Timanfaya: this charismatic symbol of the  National Park welcomes us to the road of Las Montañas del Fuego.
  • The sea of craters of infinite textures that intermingle in reddish, black and ocher colors: one of the places chosen by astronauts to perform part of their training prior to planetary expeditions.
  • The fascinating image in the middle of La Ruta de los Volcanes, when after  turning 180 degrees and returning between two volcanoes, we will see the  mountains Montaña Rajada, Montaña Termesana, La Montaña de la Vieja  Gabriela, Pico Redondo, La Montaña de Dos Picos, La Montaña de la Mancha  and, in the distance, La Montaña de Enmedio and La Montaña de la Cinta.
  • El Valle de la Tranquilidad: in synchrony with Mar de la Tranquilidad de la  Luna – where Apollo 11 landed the day man reached the satellite – is one of the  most beautiful spots on the route, as it is covered with warm ashes, and at last  shows a scene of tranquility and calm.
  • The structure of El Diablo: the design of the dining room bars is created in the  likeness of the socos de la Geria: they are the semicircular walls that protect the  vines from the constant wind, creating one of the most characteristic wine growing landscapes of the island.
  • The restaurant’s lamps: created with hand-forged pans, they are another  representation of Manrique’s limitless creativity.
  • El Jardín Muerto: located in the center of the restaurant, this small glass garden  pays homage to the legend of Hilario, in which the skeleton of a dromedary and  the trunk of a dry, burnt tree lie on volcanic ash.
  • Get excited with la Ruta de los Volcanes, an activity included in the entrance  fee that offers a 35-minute guided tour in Spanish, English and German.
  •  Let yourself be amazed by the thermodynamic experiments on the Islote de  Hilario, authentic manifestations of the power of the earth.
  • Visit the restaurant’s famous oven and enjoy some of the meats or vegetables  that are roasted in the heat of the earth.
  • Give a sweet final to the visit with the most symbolic dessert of the menu: chocolate brownie turned into a volcano.
  • Experience an Insólita Visit: a guided tour in small groups that offers a unique and exclusive perspective full of value.

INSOLITA EXPERIENCE

An exclusive experience to feel all the strength and volcanic energy of  Timanfaya National Park, where visitors can access in small groups to areas  usually restricted during La Ruta de los Volcanes.

Accompanied by our guide, we will have the opportunity to stop at one of the  most amazing places in the park, the volcano of Montaña Rajada. Ascending on  foot along the trail leads us to the impressive viewpoint of El Mar de Lava, from  where the visitor contemplates the gift offered by the view of the sea.

Discover an unknown island

After learning in detail aspects related to the geology, botany and volcanism of the park and enjoy the geothermal demonstrations of the heat that still emanates from the heart of the volcano, we will visit the “Tinecheide Refuge”, on the Islote de Hilario, the original origin of what is now the center of Las Montañas del Fuego, to finish with an aperitif in which we will taste local products paired with wines from Lanzarote.

Timanfaya National Park Grand Tour

Lanzarote Timanfaya Park Grand Tour

If you’re looking for a ‘must do’ excursion during your stay in Lanzarote it has to be our Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour. This popular trip takes you on a journey around the island to the top, must see places on the island, all in just one day.

What can you see on the Lanzarote Timanfaya Park Grand Tour?

Views of the coastline and dramatic rock formations

The first stop or the first views on the Timanfaya Park Grand Tour is the coast line of Lanzarote similar to Los Hevideros with its dramatic rocks and lava tunnels you will se amazing views on the way to the National Park. Watch in awe as the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash against the dramatic rugged cliffs and underwater caves of the Lanzarote coastline. Los Hervideros was created solely by nature with the solidification of lava flowing into the sea and years of erosion since the volcanic eruptions took place on the island. You may see it in the distance as the tours do not stop here for safety reasons.

Los Hervideros gives you an insight into the power of nature and how it helped to form the Lanzarote landscape as we know it today. It’s a great place for photographs and video and you can explore the pathways built into the rocks, or simply relax and listen to the sound of the waves as they crash against the rocks.

El Golfo

Just a short trip up the coastline, El Golfo is a small seaside village where you will also find the emerald green lagoon (Charco de Los Clicos). This lagoon can be found in the bottom of half a volcano that collapsed into the sea. The lagoon gets its striking green colour from the minerals and microorganisms that live in the water. This is another great photo opportunity and one of the many must see natural wonders on the island of Lanzarote.

Whilst Charco de Los Clicos is the most popular attraction in El Golfo, the quaint, picturesque coastal village is the perfect place to take a walk and stretch your legs, watching the waves of the Atlantic Ocean roll onto the stoney beach.

The Lanzarote Volcanos, Fire Mountain

The next stop on the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour takes you to Fire Mountain . This absolute jewel in the crown of things to do and see in Lanzarote is a humbling reminder of the islands volcanic history. Often likened to a lunar landscape, it’s an ‘otherworldly’ landscape of dormant Lanzarote volcanoes and solidified lava.

The Timanfaya National Park is also a stark reminder of the thermal activity that is still very active, just meters under the surface of the park. Watch first hand, as guides demonstrate the extreme heat by igniting dry straw as it’s lowered into a pit in the ground and witness steam shoot into the air just moments after water is poured into a hole.

Timanfaya Park Tour

Also in the grounds of Fire Mountain, the next part of the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour takes you on a coach journey through the National Park itself. This is the ONLY way to experience the vast expanse of Volcanos and Lava fields as it’s a protected national park. The coach will stop at intervals allowing you take photos and videos of this spectacular landscape.

Camel Ride Lanzarote (optional)

If you want to ride the Timanfaya Lanzarote Camels, the next stop is for you! This is an optional part of the tour as we stop off at the Camels on the way back through the Timanfaya National Park. If this is on your to do list, then two people can ride on one camel, and it costs just €11 per person. This is optional and not included in the price of the tour.

Lunch (Optional extra paid on the day)

The tour will then head north through the Timanfaya National Park, to the village of Mancha Blanca. Here we will stop and you can grab a bite at an arranged (optional) buffet lunch. The stop off here also gives you the chance to visit Nuestra ora de Los Dolores, a small white church with volcanic accents dating back to the 18th century.

La Geria and the Wine Region of Lanzarote

After enjoying lunch, what else is there to do other than take part in a wine tasting experience? Lanzarote produces some of the best wines in the world. Quite a remarkable feat given the challenges of the volcanic landscape, and you can learn all about how they do exactly that, along with sampling and purchasing a bottle or two on this next part of the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour.

Haria the Valley of 1000 palms

The Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour then continues to head north and we arrive at the village of Haria. One striking thing that you notice as we descend on the village is the valley and palm trees. This valley is known as the Valley of 1000 palms. It is said that a palm tree was planted for every child that was born in the village. The whitewashed buildings and houses of Haria are a sight to behold against the backdrop of the valley and surrounding mountains, and if you’re lucky enough you might even experience the ‘rolling clouds’ as they come over the cliffs from the coast. Add to that the faint glow of light come nighttime and you’ll enjoy a mesmerising sight that’s unlike any other.

Los Jameos del Agua

For the final stop on the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour we visit Los Jameos del Agua. This is a cultural site and attraction created by late local artist and architect, Cesar Manrique. The attraction is home to a cafe, a subterranean salt water lake that is home to a native species of blind albino crabs, an outdoor garden and pool and an auditorium / concert arena built into a lava tunnel. Los Jameos del Agua is considered an art, culture, and tourism centre which is the ideal place to discover and immerse yourself in the local art scene.

In summary…

With such a diverse selection of attractions and locations in one excursions, the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour is without question one of the best trips that we offer. Naturally, it’s also one of our most popular excursions so don’t miss your chance of exploring the best attractions that Lanzarote has to offer and reserve your places, for just a small deposit, today.

Full Lanzarote tours FAQ’s

There is a buffet lunch stop in Mancha Blanca. Lunch itself isn’t included in the price of the excursion but you have the option to eat here for between €8 & €10 per person which also includes drinks.

There are so many things to see and do in Lanzarote that you will need more than one day to experience everything, however the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour does give you the option to discover some of the very best attractions that Lanzarote has to offer – all in a single day.

This is a full day bus tour with plenty to see and do with regular stop offs. If you feel the children might get restless on a full day tour, you might want to consider one of our half day tours.

Indeed you can. There is a stop off at the Camels in The Timanfaya National Park where you can take an optional camel ride. The cost of the Camel Ride is not included in the tour and is an around €12 per camel. If you don’t want to take a Camel Ride you can take some time out to relax or explore the visitors center.

Most of the volcanoes of Lanzarote are classified as extinct or dormant. The Timanfaya Volcano is the only active volcano in Lanzarote. On the Timanfaya Lanzarote Grand Tour you get to witness this activity with both a fire and geyser demonstration as the ground can reach up to 600°C just 13 meters below the surface in the National Park.

Absolutely. We have hotel pick ups in all the main resorts. Puerto Del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca and Arrecife. Once you’ve reserved your place on the tour we will advise you of your collection and drop off point.
