Abstract
IGNIMBRITES are commonly of rhyolite, rhyodacite or dacite composition, less commonly of andesite composition, and rarely of basalt composition. Ignimbrites associated with sodic-alkaline volcanism are rare and known examples are restricted to the Kenya field, although doubt has been cast1–3 on their ignimbrite origin4, and it has been suggested that they are more akin to froth flows. A preliminary examination of a series of rocks from Tenerife indicates that in this, another sodic-alkaline environment, a number of different types of volcanoclastic flow may be distinguished.

LONDON —
Britain had its hottest year on record in 2022, official figures show, the latest evidence that climate change is transforming Europe’s weather.
The U.K.’s Met Office weather agency said Thursday that the provisional annual average temperature in the country was 50 degrees, the highest since comparable data began to be compiled in 1884. The previous record was 49.8 degrees, set in 2014.
Met Office scientists said human activity — primarily fossil fuel emissions — has made such warm conditions vastly more likely. Britain’s 10 hottest years on record have all been since 2003.
“The results showed that recording [50 degrees] in a natural climate would occur around once every 500 years, whereas in our current climate it could be as frequently as once every three to four years,” said Met Office scientist Nikos Christidis.
Britain is not alone. France’s average temperature was above 57.2 degrees last year, making it the hottest year since weather readings began in the country in 1900. Switzerland’s meteorological service said the alpine nation’s annual average temperature of 45.3 degrees was “by far the highest value since measurements began in 1864.”
Spain also had its hottest year since records started in 1961, according to the national weather agency Aemet, with an average daily temperature of 59.7 degrees. It said the four hottest years on record for the southern European country have all come since 2015.
Last year saw summer drought and heat waves across much of Europe, with the temperature in Britain rising above 104 degrees for the first time on record. Norway’s Svalbard islands in the Arctic had their warmest summer in more than a century of record-keeping. The archipelago’s average temperature for June, July and August was 45.3 degrees, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute said.
Autumn brought more heavy rain in parts of Europe, including the mountainous Italian island of Ischia, where downpours in November triggered a massive landslide that pushed cars and buildings into the sea and killed at least a dozen people.
Unlike the U.S. and Canada, which have been hit by bitter cold and snowstorms, much of Europe is experiencing unseasonably warm winter weather.
In Germany, the year ended with the warmest New Year’s Eve on record, with temperatures reaching 68 degrees in the south of the country. Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland and the Netherlands all set national record daily highs for Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.
As 2023 begins, many low and medium-altitude ski resorts in the Alps, the Pyrenees and other European ranges are experiencing a lack of snow.
In Bosnia, spring-like weather has foiled even artificial snow — either it’s too warm to make it, or it melts soon after being spat out onto the slopes. Along the slopes in Bjelasnica near Sarajevo on Wednesday, snow accumulation amounted to little more than several white patches on an otherwise grassy landscape of brown and green.
High temperatures, sparse snowfall in Europe’s Alps worries ski industry
Much of the Alps does not look right for this time of year following unseasonably warm winter weather in Europe, including record high January temperatures in Switzerland. The sparse snowfall has seen grass blanketing the continent’s central mountains, worrying the ski industry and winter sports organisers and reviving concerns about climate change.
Advertising
On a swath stretching from France to Poland, with the Alps at the centre, many parts of Europe were experiencing unseasonably warm weather, reviving concerns about temperature upheaval linked to climate change.
Patches of grass, rock and dirt were visible this week in some of Europe’s skiing meccas, such as France’s Chamonix, Innsbruck in Austria and Crans-Montana in Switzerland.
Over the New Year’s weekend, Switzerland recorded its highest-ever January temperatures north of the Alps with thermometers hitting 20.2 degrees Celsius (68.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in the town of Delemont.
MeteoSwiss, Switzerland’s national weather and climate service, said January heat records fell at several monitoring stations on the north side of the Alps mountain range, due to warm winds from the southwest.
The 20.2 C temperature recorded in Delemont was due to mild southwesterly winds combining with the Foehn effect – a dry, warm, downslope wind on the downwind side of a mountain range – coming off the Jura mountains, said the agency.
Temperatures in Delemont were hovering more than 16 degrees above the 1991-2020 average for the turn of the year, giving weather “worthy of June”, it added.
Delemont is the capital of the northwestern Jura region, which borders France.
‘Everything is difficult’
The shortage has been particularly burdensome around Switzerland’s Adelboden, which is set to host World Cup skiing tournament, and generally draws 25,000 fans for a single day of racing.
Course director Toni Hadi acknowledged that the race will be run on 100% artificial snow this year.
“The climate is a bit changing but what should we do here? Shall we stop with life?” he said by phone, noting that other challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic and war show “life is not easy” these days.
“Everything is difficult – not only to prepare a ski slope,” Hadi said.
The start to 2023 picked up where many countries had already left off: Last year was the hottest on record in both Switzerland and France. More broadly, the UN’s World Meteorological Organisation says the past eight years are on track to be the eight warmest on record. Its final tally on global temperature figures for 2022 will be released in mid-January.
‘Good start’ to season followed by warm weather
In France, national weather agency Meteo France said 2022 ended with some of the warmest weather the country has ever experienced at this time of year – capping an exceptionally warm year that saw temperature records broken and rampant forest fires and drought conditions.
Météo France says the southern Alps and, in the northern Alps, slopes above 2,200 metres, have seen close to normal snowfalls. But snow is notably lacking at lower altitudes in the northern Alps and across the Pyrenees, it said.
To be sure, the Alps cover a lot of territory and not all of it is bereft of snow: Perhaps counterintuitively, some of the best snowfall has been reported in the Italian Dolomites, to the south of the Swiss Alps.
Early in the ski season, fortunes looked bright for snow lovers: In France, freezing weather into mid-December raised hopes that ski resorts in the Alps, the Pyrenees and elsewhere might see plenty of early snow and the lasting subzero temperatures needed to keep runs open.
But exceptionally warm weather followed, prompting some resorts at lower altitudes to close down as snow cover melted away.
“There was a good start to the season with a cold wave in mid-December which provided some white to pretty much everyone. Then, last week, there was quite a bit of rain and warm temperatures, so a certain number of runs had to close again,” Laurent Reynaud of the Domaines Skiables de France industry group that represents French ski resorts, lift operators and others, said on C-News television.
It’s ‘just going to be over’
Germany too has seen unusually springlike temperatures – as high as 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in parts of the country on Monday. New Year’s Eve is believed to have been the warmest since reliable records began. The German Weather Service reported readings of 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and just above at four weather stations in southern Germany, news agency dpa reported.
Wim Thiery, a professor of climate science at the University of Brussels, said the same jet stream that pulled down cold air from the Arctic into the US has fanned warm air from subtropical zones into Europe. He warned that climate change hasn’t finished its work – unless people cut use of fuels that trap heat in the atmosphere.
”By the end of the century (it’s) just going to be over … skiing in the Alps as we know it,” he said, adding that lower-altitude mountain areas already feel the impact. “In the future, these problems will get worse, because the snow will continue to melt as long as the climate warms. ”

The best countries in Europe for living and working
The main thing in planning a move abroad is to responsibly choose the country that will become our new home. It should be a place where you can live calmly, safely, comfortably and earn decent money. Based on Numbeo data for mid-2022, we have compiled our TOP of the best countries for living and career growth, which are worth paying attention to, and also highlighted their key advantages.
Switzerland
Switzerland opens our TOP, as it is the most favorable country for life on the map of Europe (an impressive index of 195.06!). And it is not surprising, because it is one of the most developed countries and leads in many international indicators, in particular, in terms of economic competitiveness.
Pros of living in Switzerland:
A prosperous economy that opens up broad career opportunities.
Easy to adapt language environment with official French, Italian, German and common English. nine0006
Decent healthcare (10th place in the list of the Best countries to live in terms of health, according to Numbeo).
Low crime rate within the country, as well as neutral status, which allows you to stay away from conflicts.
Convenient location, which makes it possible to visit different developed countries of Europe without any problems.
Pleasant temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters and picturesque nature that attracts tourists.
Keep in mind that here you need to have a decent income in order to pay for food, treatment, rent. It is also important to be prepared for fierce competition in the labor market, as millions of job seekers come here from abroad. Despite a number of difficulties for moving, Switzerland regularly finds itself in the TOP of the best countries for living.
Denmark
Another country that proves that the standard of living in Europe is very high. Denmark takes an honorable second place in the ranking with an index of 194.15. If you have always dreamed of moving to Scandinavia permanently, then this is a good option.
Pros of living in Denmark:
Strong economy with a high level of development and technological orientation.
High remuneration and good conditions for employees guaranteed by legal employment.
Affordable conditions for opening and running a business, which makes Denmark a favorable place for business immigration.
nine0005 Minimal bureaucracy and almost complete absence of corruption and crime.
Friendly locals (first in the rankings of the Best countries to live in terms of “happiness”), who mostly speak English.
Direct access for residents to public health services.
Here, as in Switzerland, you must have an adequate income to live. This is due to high prices for food and housing rent. Finding a job in a local company is not easy due to the large flow of applicants. However, once you get a job, you can no longer worry about your financial well-being. nine0003
Germany
Germany is among the seven countries that offer an impressive standard of living in Europe, with a score of 178.32. However, it is not as financially demanding as some other developed European countries. Due to the fact that Germany is part of the EU, its residents have many opportunities to move within the Schengen area.
Pros of living in Germany:
Good working conditions, high wages, social benefits and other guaranteed rights for workers. nine0006
Wide employment opportunities for experienced foreign professionals in local companies.
A stable political situation and a developed institution of democracy with a focus on freedom of speech for every person.
Increased security that is constantly maintained and a minimum level of crime.
Internationality, which allows you to use both German and English for communication.
A well-thought-out public transport system and developed infrastructure, which makes living easier and more enjoyable. nine0006
One of the important nuances to be taken into account is legislation that is difficult for a foreigner to understand. This applies both to the collection of taxes and health care (namely, health insurance) and even relations with the employer. We recommend that you deal with these points in advance before making a decision about moving and looking for a job.
Estonia
Estonia is included in the list of the Best countries in Europe, being in the top ten with an index of 173.83. It is especially popular among residents of the CIS – and not only among tourists, but also among those who want to move with their families to a calm and safe place. Estonia has a decent standard of living in Europe and among the Baltic countries. nine0003
Advantages of living in Estonia:
The rapid development of the IT industry and innovation, which opens up new business opportunities.
High salaries (the average amount is even higher than some of the other best countries in Europe offer).
A stable economic situation with affordable conditions for the creation and development of start-ups.
Calm and foreign-friendly population, the lion’s share of which speaks English.
Affordable prices for accommodation and meals in almost all cities of Estonia. nine0006
Clear tax system with low rates, financial and banking transactions online.
Finding a job in Estonia can be difficult. This is due to the fact that it is necessary not only to know the official language, but also to be a qualified specialist with relevant experience and education. It is more difficult for immigrants from the CIS to get a position than for locals and citizens of the European Union.
Spain
Considering the best countries to live in? Pay attention to Spain with an indicator of 173.01. This is one of the most popular destinations for people from the post-Soviet space. People come here not only as a resort, but also for the purpose of permanent residence, education, and career building. nine0003
Pros of living in Spain:
Stable economy with a large number of vacancies for foreigners, including during the tourist season.
Optimal ratio of goods/services quality and prices, full compliance with international standards.
Acceptable cost of living for immigrants, lower than offered by other developed countries in Europe.
Mild climate and good ecology, abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables grown on local fertile lands. nine0006
Immigrant friendly, calm and safe environment for family living.
High-quality medical services, for the development of which the state allocates a significant part of the funds.
Immigrants who are planning to start a business may face bureaucratic difficulties. In this case, you will need not only finances, but also a ready-made business plan, relevant education and experience. There are also problems associated with living, for example, the lack of central heating. But do not forget that up to 300 days a year there is sunny hot weather, and winter is mild and warm. This is one of the important factors to include Spain in the best countries to live in. nine0003
Czech Republic
If you are looking for the best countries to live in central Europe, the Czech Republic may be your best option. As of mid-2022, the figure was 163.78. Immigrants, including from neighboring states, this country attracts economically and culturally. Since it is part of the EU, locals and foreigners with a residence permit get the opportunity to move freely within the Schengen area.
Pros of living in the Czech Republic:
Extensive opportunities for finding work for foreign specialists in various professions.
Availability for doing business for both local and foreign businessmen.
Optimal prices for renting houses and apartments for permanent residence (lower than those offered by neighboring developed European countries).
Convenient infrastructure and public transport system, which allows you to quickly get used to the country.
High-level medical care, but mostly on a paid basis. nine0006
Variety of rental options with different prices depending on the region.
The Czech Republic can be included in the best countries for the life of those immigrants who plan to create their own business: register a new company or open a branch of an existing enterprise. There are a minimum of restrictions for foreigners – they are almost equal in rights with local businessmen. Of the difficulties, we single out the bureaucracy in state institutions and the mandatory knowledge of Czech, since English is not found everywhere. nine0003
This is not a complete list of the best countries to live in. You can add the Netherlands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Slovenia to it … We have described only a few options that differ in cost of living, climate and even atmosphere, but are equally attractive for moving.
If your goal is to earn money, we recommend that you pay attention to creating a foreign currency account or wallet to send money abroad. For this, the Profee service is perfect. Transfer funds in minutes with no hidden fees to almost anywhere in the world (you can find the list of countries available for sending/receiving on the website). nine0003
Abnormal January: 8 European countries set new temperature records
Early January, and winter does not think to come into its own. Europe was swept by a wave of warm air, temperature records were set in eight countries, and falling demand for gas reduced its cost to pre-war levels.
According to the Air Force, even in Poland, where it is usually frost and snow at this time, the thermometer rose last Sunday to +19°C. And in Bilbao (Spain), the thermometer showed + 25 ° C, ten degrees higher than the average temperature on January 1. nine0003
Temperature records were broken in Liechtenstein, Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, Denmark. Three more countries recorded regional records: France, Germany and Ukraine. On the slopes of the Alpine ski resorts, green grass breaks through instead of snow.
As a rule, temperature records, which are recorded quite often, exceed the previous one literally by tenths of a degree. In the same year, the situation is different: in Warsaw, for example, the air temperature on the first day of the new year was 4 degrees higher than the previous record, and in Belarus (+16.4 ° C) – 4.5 degrees higher than the previously set record. nine0003
France, Britain, Spain and Ireland called 2022 the hottest year on record. At the same time, in Britain, only December “knocked out” of the list of the warmest months – for a whole week there was snow and there was a slight frost, even in southern England.
Scientists note that warm/hot weather waves are getting longer and more pronounced due to human influence on the climate. The heat in winter in Europe is, of course, profitable and pleasant, but the anomalous summer heat destroys crops and kills people.
It’s true that it’s far from being warm everywhere. In Russia and Scandinavia, meteorologists warn of coming frosts down to -20°C and snowfalls. nine0003
And in Greece for Christmas and New Year was just spring weather. High seasonal maximum temperatures were recorded during Christmas noon hours, which were 7°C above the average for the period 2010-2020.
Due to warm abnormal weather in many European countries, the demand for blue fuel fell, which significantly reduced the cost. On Wednesday, the price of a cubic meter on the London Stock Exchange, for the first time since November 2021, fell below $750 per thousand cubic meters, and on the TTF hub in the Netherlands – to $733. nine0003
Gas prices began to decline sharply from the second week of December 2022, easing fears of a prolonged crisis that could hurt the European economy. If prices remain low, this will help reduce inflation throughout Europe.
Europe’s gas storage facilities are almost 84% full, and low holiday demand even allowed some of the gas to be returned to storage. This buffer will help Europe weather any cold snap until the end of the winter of 2022-2023 and reduce the shortage of supplies from Russia. nine0003

Common ground – Save Our Seas Foundation
As part of our angel shark tagging campaign in the Canary Islands, we are focusing specifically on a very interesting beach called Las Teresitas. The reason for choosing this beach as our natural laboratory is quite simple: it is the largest nursery area for the Critically Endangered angel shark that we have discovered so far in Europe.
Located only 15 minutes away from the capital, Santa Cruz, Las Teresitas is the most popular tourist beach on Tenerife. It’s entirely artificial, created in the 1970s when hundreds of tons of white sand were shipped from the Western Sahara to the island (Tenerife’s beaches are normally of black sand). With its beachfront bars, this stretch of fine golden sand not only attracts hundreds of tourists every day, but within only four decades it has become a home to diverse fish species. Most importantly, it has attracted the rarest shark species in Europe: the angel shark.
During the day, Las Teresitas is crowded: women are doing their aqua aerobics, children of all ages are playing and tourists are sunbathing and drinking cocktails. The angel sharks, however, remain unnoticed, buried in the sand and well hidden.
At night, hungry little angel sharks and a crew of volunteers helping me to find and tag them replace the tourists in the shallow water off the beach.
Together with our partner NGO Asociacion Tonina, we only tag baby angel sharks on this particular beach. The adults are always tagged underwater using a self-made device and following a tagging protocol that we came up with especially for angel sharks. In my next blog I will explain more about underwater tagging.
Searching for juvenile angel sharks at Las Teresitas is very easy as they are close to the shore in water no deeper than half a metre. The crew usually divides into one snorkelling team and one diving team that searches in deeper areas.
We normally find our first shark within no more than 10 minutes. Once caught, the shark is taken to our mobile lab on the beach where it is photographed, measured, weighed, sexed and tagged, and a small clip is taken from a fin.
Why angel sharks have chosen this crowded beach as a nursery ground is still a mystery, but we know that they come back here every year to give birth to dozens of pups. We will continue to tag and monitor them to get a better understanding of their use of this area, which could be a good example of co-existence between sharks and humans.
This data shows the water temperature at Teresitas Beach. In addition to water temperature, you can also get information about air temperature, weather for today, tomorrow and in the coming days, surf forecast, as well as sunrise / sunset and moonrise data for a given location.
The water temperature at Teresitas Beach is currently 22.4 degrees. Based on our historical data over a period of ten years, the warmest sea in this day in Teresitas Beach was recorded in 2009year and was 21.7°C, and the coldest was recorded in 2008 at 19.8°C. In the next 10 days, the sea temperature at Teresitas beach is expected to drop to 20.5°C. December average sea water temperature at Teresitas Beach is 20.9°C/68.3°F, the minimum temperature is 18.7°C/68.3°F, and the maximum is 22.8°C/73.5°F.
The beach season at Teresitas Beach starts in April and ends in January. During those months, Teresitas Beach water temperature does not drop below 20°C/68°F and therefore suitable for comfortable swimming. The average water temperature at Teresitas Beach in winter reaches 19.9°C, in spring 19.6°C, in summer the average temperature rises to 22.2°C, and in autumn it is 23.3°C.

Playa Las Teresitas – Tenerife
On the edge of the capital – PARADISE – blue sea, white ship.
Las Teresitas is a fashionable city beach with yellow sand, a quiet cove, huge liners scurry about, seagulls are tame. Warm water. Parking is convenient and free. Cafes are cozy. We did not notice the annoying sellers of watches, bags and towels, as in the south. Maybe the police were nearby?
The beach was created in the 70s. For this, yellow sand was brought from the Sahara and a breakwater was built at a distance of 150 meters from the coast.
The project by the architect Dominique Perrault was to completely reconstruct and rebuild the beach strip between the borders of the current Barranco de San Andrés gorge and the breakwater at the end of the beach. To this end, the area in front of the beach will be transformed, as a result of which some of the existing plant species will be relocated, commercial premises will be built.
The global project was divided into two phases: the reconstruction of the Playa de las Teresitas area, which is designed by the Ministry of the Environment; and redevelopment of the beach access area by the Ministry of Tourism and the Island Council of Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.
In addition, the Cercado and Las Huertas canyons will be cut and a bridge will be created that will cross the new channel. It is also planned to build a hotel on the old military base of San Andres, a sports area, improve the road network connecting the upper part of the Anagi forest with San Andres and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Dominique Perrault’s original design also included an open-air amphitheater, small kiosks and pavilions dedicated to the tourism industry, service cabins (bathrooms, changing rooms, etc.), as well as parking and commercial premises. Perrault’s project also included the construction of an observation deck high on El Suculum mountain with a large white cross. The monument will be visible from the beach and the sea.
Unfortunately, not without corruption. The case of Las Teresitas. A statement from the General State Administration in the report described the operation as a “bookball”. The land around the beach was expropriated, reclaimed and resold. On April 19, 2007, Miguel Zerolo, mayor of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was formally charged in the Supreme Court of the Canary Islands with the crimes of embezzling public funds for this operation. In May 2007, the Supreme Court annulled the sale of land adjacent to Las Teresitas Beach because it was “contrary to the legal system”. In April 2017, the provincial court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife sentenced Miguel Zerolo to seven years in prison. We hope to see an updated beach soon, with new amenities.
We live in the 21st century. Of course, now you can make not only a real trip to any corner of the world, which is so different from the rules of the “Soviet era”, when a trip, even to Bulgaria, was available only to the elite, and souvenirs and outfits “because of the cordon” aroused pride among the owners and envy of neighbors.
You can take virtual tours of Tenerife. Get acquainted with nature, weather, and personally imagine yourself visiting us. WEB cameras installed in different areas of interest to tourists will help in this. Now no Tour Operator will be able to deceive you about the state of the atmosphere and the ocean!
You can look at the beach using the cameras installed on the island by SkylineWebcams

Sights of Spain – guide travel guide
The main attraction of Madrid remains the Royal Palace, which now hosts only important meetings and official ceremonies. Until 1755, a Moorish castle was located on the site of the palace. In the middle of the 18th century, it lost its strategic importance, and since it was located in a very picturesque place, it was destroyed and rebuilt into a chic palace. This beautiful building has more than 2 thousand rooms and halls, which store valuable collections of antique chandeliers, clocks, furniture, musical instruments, weapons and works of art.

Best Hikes in Tenerife – Our Top 5 Favourite Hiking Trails
Discover the best hikes in Tenerife
Most people come to Tenerife for the sunshine and to enjoy the beaches. But Tenerife is much more than this. We absolutely recommend exploring the forests and the trails on the island, as you will probably be amazed by the beauty that you’ll discover when hiking in Tenerife.
In fact, there are so many hiking trails in Tenerife that you could stay here for a year and still discover some new paths every day.
Hiking in Tenerife South
The great thing about hiking in Tenerife is that the weather is pleasant and warm all year round and you can see many different landscapes on this island that is characterized by great natural diversity.
Barranco del Infierno
Length: 6,5 km
Duration: 3 – 4 hours
Difficulty: low – medium difficulty
Located in the town of Adeje, this ravine is easily accessible for anyone staying in the south of the island.
Since Barranco del Infierno is a protected nature reserve, only 300 people are allowed to visit this place each day.
So you will have to book online and pay a fee of 8,5 Euros / adult and 4,25 Euros/child. This is the only trail that we know of in Tenerife where you have to pay in order to have access to it.
Best Circular Hikes in Tenerife
The great thing about circular hikes is that at the end of the day you end up where you started, without having to walk on the same path twice.
This is especially helpful if you are traveling by car and you have to get back to your car after finishing the hike.
On route towards the Lunar Landscape viewpoint
Vilaflor Lunar Landscape – Paisaje Lunar de Vilaflor
Length: 13 km – the entire hike / 8 km – this is the shorter version we did (click on the link above to read more details)
Duration: 5 h / 3 h
Difficulty: medium difficulty
Details about Vilaflor Lunar Landscape hike
This hike starts in Vilaflor, the highest village in Tenerife. It takes you to a place known as the Lunar Landscape, due to its moon-like aspect. PR-TF 72 is an approved hiking trail in Tenerife, which means that it is well signposted trail and you can easily do it just by following the signs along the way. We also recommend using an app on your phone (we use the AllTrails app).
This hike goes through a pine forest and when you get to the highest point, if the day is clear, you will be able to see Gran Canaria, one of the other Canary Islands.
Walking through the site of the last volcanic eruption in Tenerife
Chinyero Walk – A beautiful and easy hike in Tenerife
Length: 7 km
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: low
Details about Chinyero Volcano Walk
Chinyero Loop is actually more of a circular walk since you don’t have to climb a lot during the course of this trail.
The Chinyero hike is one of the easiest hikes in Tenerife, recommended even to families with children. You will walk around the Chinyero volcano, following a path through the site of the most recent volcanic eruption that took place in Tenerife.
This trails is mostly flat and will take you through different types of landscapes, plus you will have several viewpoints from where you can observe Mount Teide.
Alto de Guamaso – The easiest hike in Tenerife inside Teide National Park
Length: 2.4 km
Duration: 40 minutes
Difficulty: low
Details about Alto de Guamaso hike
We actually did the shorter version of the Alto de Guamaso hike, since we did not start at El Portillo, instead, we kept driving for under 1 km until we reached a small parking where we could leave the car and start our walk. We explained everything in our dedicated article (just click on the link above).
Part of this path is also accessible for wheelchairs.
This is quite an easy hike and also a short one. You will have the opportunity to see the Orotava Valley from above (and maybe also the sea of clouds, a phenomenon that often happens in this area). As you go around the trail you will also see Mount Teide in all its might, although we were a bit unlucky as we did this hike on a day with calima, which is why it looks so hazy in our photos.
Hiking in the North of Tenerife
The North of Tenerife is home to some of the most magical hiking trails on the island.
Anaga is best discovered on foot and there are so many hiking trails in this part of Tenerife that you could spend an entire summer exploring these mountains and forests. But if you don’t have a lot of time and you want to see the best of Anaga and the most wonderful trail there is, then we recommend that you go to El Pijaral.
El Pijaral – Hiking in Anaga’s Enchanted Forest
Length: 7 km
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: medium
Info about hiking in Anaga forest (El Pijaral)
Attention!
You need a permit in order to do this hike. The permit is free, but you will need to book ahead of time since there are only 45 permits per day available. Click on the link above to go to the dedicated page where we explain how you can obtain the permit.
El Pijaral – Hiking in Tenerife inside Anaga Rural Park
This magical hike will take you through the laurel forest also called the “Enchanted Forest”. The pictures really don’t do it justice, as this place is really like a fairy tale forest. The forest trail leads to a viewing point with a spectacular view over the beaches of Anaga. This is also a circular hike and you will go around the forest in order to get back to the car.
If you don’t have a permit you can skip the hike through the forest (that’s the only part of the trail for which you need a permit since the forest is a protected natural space) and you can come of the other route straight to the viewpoint. You can read more in our dedicated article, where we explain everything in detail.
Choose an easy trail for your first time hiking in Tenerife
As you can see, there are many hikes that you can do in Tenerife and these are just some to get you started if you are a novice, or it’s just your first time thinking of exploring Tenerife on foot.
You can start by doing the Chinyero Volcanic Walk, which is one of the easy hikes in Tenerife to get you familiar with the terrain here. This is also quite a scenic route, with wonderful views of Mount Teide and portions of the trail that will take you through a pine forest.
We recommend that you wear proper hiking shoes since the terrain is rough on most places and safety must come first. If you go on approved trails they are well signposted and it would be hard to get lost, but we still recommend using a map or at least an app on your phone (keep in mind that in some places you will have no internet connection – this was the case for the forest hike in Anaga and also part of the Lunar Landscape hike).
Top 10 Tenerife Walks
It’s only recently that the British Gore-Tex set have caught on to what the German visitors have known for years – Tenerife is a trekking heaven.
Over 600 miles of trails weave through rich woodland, traverse deep gullies and curve up, over and around volcanic peaks. Passing whitewashed villages and hillside farms, each one offers visitors an insight into the real Tenerife, its history, culture and beauty.
For solitude amidst a natural playground, the Anaga or Teno Rural Parks offer amazing routes, the former including the legendary Masca trail from mountain to ocean, the latter a stunning route through rainforest-like canopy to the hidden hamlet of Taganana.
If you want to take even more dramatic steps, a network of signed paths snake through the desert-scape of Las Cañadas at the foot of Mount Teide. Here we list our top ten best Tenerife walks.
1. Cruz del Carmen to Chinamada
This is the best walk on Tenerife, through ancient forests and steep, mountain ravines to a hamlet where the locals live in cave houses. Swap the flip flops for hiking boots and the bikini for a fleece – this is an hour’s drive and a million miles away from Playa de Las Américas.
2. Masca Gorge
A three hour hike from picturesque village to beach takes you through a prehistoric landscape straight from Jurassic Park. Buy a ticket for the boat to Los Gigantes to avoid the return hike and walking like a T Rex for the next week.
3. Barranco del Infierno (Hell’s Ravine)
Just a hop and a skip from the beaches of Costa Adeje, this three hour, round trip ends in that most rare of Tenerife features – a waterfall. A real favourite, provided a) it’s open and b) you can get past the job’s worth on the gate who checks your footwear and water reserves.
(Please note, this walk is currently closed).
4. Rambla del Castro
Old haciendas, banana plantations, palm groves and a miniature fort in which to play at Pirates of the Caribbean are the rewards for stretching your legs along the stunning Los Realejos coast.
5. La Fortaleza
Leave this planet altogether and head up into the moonscape of Teide National Park to explore a section of the north crater wall. It’s an easy enough trail but there’s a certain amount of heavy breathing along the way due to the altitude, at least, that’s my excuse.
6. The Erjos Pools
Head up into deepest rural Tenerife to discover these former quarry works which are now a watery beauty spot. Ducks, dragonflies and views to die for are all part of the delightful, two hour ramble.
7. Chinyero
Take a turn around the site of Tenerife’s last volcanic eruption in 1909. You’ll find a surprisingly diverse landscape to admire and you’ll discover an interesting phenomenon about walking on fresh (in volcanic terms) lava – it hurts your feet.
8. Los Órganos
Pine scented forests, emerald fields, picture-postcard stone cottages and walking above a sea of clouds await those with the stamina and the head for heights to explore the upper La Orotava Valley.
9. Pico Viejo
Ride the cable car to just below the peak of Mount Teide and follow the path to Pico Viejo (the Old Peak) for a jaw-dropping view over the volcanic crater with the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro floating on the horizon.
10. Geranium Walk
Step out of your hotel onto the 9 km, palm tree lined promenade that runs from Los Cristianos to La Caleta. Connecting no less than 12 beaches and countless bars, restaurants and shops along the way, this one might take a little time to complete.
If you prefer motorised transport over foot-power, perhaps our Tenerife Top 10 Drives might suit you better.

And hello again, friends! The spring holiday on March 8 has already passed, but the spring mood is only gaining momentum. In this regard, I remembered a trip to the blossoming almonds, especially since we promised to tell about it, so the right moment has come.
The hike took place during the vacation of Pavel’s parents and we chose the route based on the physical fitness of all members of the group. There are many other trails in the same area, the marks and route indicators of which we met on the way. So if in the middle of a route you decide to shorten it, you will have not one, but several opportunities to turn off. nine0006

Hello friends! February is the time of sales, almond blossoms and, of course, the famous carnival. We, too, indulged in the general turmoil, which caused a pause in the updates of our blog. In addition, Pavel’s parents came to visit us and we again traveled half the island, and also visited the carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where we filmed gigabytes of material to show you all the most interesting and tell you firsthand! There will be more photos than text. As the saying goes, it’s better to see once than hear a hundred times. nine0006

The last days of our guests’ vacation on the island of Tenerife are left. In the end, we saved a trip on the island-famous schooner Flipper Uno. The boat trip takes place along the picturesque cliffs of Los Gigantes, accompanied by mischievous dolphins and huge seagulls. Her program includes all the necessary entertainment: eat, drink, and swim in the ocean.

It was one of the calm days we spent in Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago. The purpose of the day was to visit the natural pool on the ocean. In some parts of the island, such pools are the only place where you can safely swim in the ocean. Thanks to the fences, there are no waves in it and you can enjoy the calm ocean water.

A fabulous place in Tenerife that is definitely worth a visit is the Anaga Nature Reserve (Spanish: Anaga). It is a mountain range in the northeast of the island, the northern slopes of which are covered with dense relict forest. Thanks to the stable humid climate of this part of the island of Tenerife, unique plants have been preserved, which are descendants of the most ancient forests of the dinosaur era.

Loro Park is another place in Tenerife that you should definitely visit! This park was conceived as a park of parrots, initially there were only 150 species, but at the moment it is unique. Naturally, we couldn’t miss the island’s main attraction and set aside a whole day for it. The Teide volcano is the highest peak in the Atlantic Ocean, its height above the ocean floor is 7500 m, and above sea level 3718 m. From the top of Teide you can see all the Canary Islands. The National Park “Parque Nacional del Teide ” is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Spain. nine0006

Hike in Las Narices del Teide – Nostrils of Teide
Climbing up to the holes through which the Pico de Teide “breathed” stratovolcano can be a test acclimatization tour before moving on to higher positions. A day spent in the chaotic terrain of this landscape will bring beautiful views of the western part of the central caldera, the southwest of Tenerife with the Teno mountains and the neighboring island of La Gomer. The ascent narrowly crosses the line of three kilometers (3022 m above sea level). The journey continues to the Pico Viejo crater (3134 m above sea level), which is an alternative option for a full day hike (at least 2 hours longer). nine0006
Pico Viejo
The tour starts from the Mirador de Chio car park, which is located on road no. 823 leading from the southwest island to the central caldera. The number of parking spaces is limited, you should be there around 9 o’clock. The trail leads through the lava area in a northwesterly direction and offers a beautiful view of Pico Viejo, on the slope of which you can feel the Nostrils of Teide, the travel destination.
After a full initial descent (approximately ½ hour), the mark uncompromisingly determines the next direction to the right and up. The ascent, originally through the chaotic lava trough terrain, is later replaced by a more open landscape that clearly shows the narrow ascent path to the dominant volcano.
As altitude increases, the supply of water and oxygen decreases. The more interesting are the views, for example, of the Teno Mountains, whose peaks in the south-west of the island are struggling with the trade winds. nine0006
An optimistic look: somewhere below there is a path along which they climbed. It winds between the peaks of former volcanoes. Will he ever wake up again?
And this is the goal of the ascent. The nostrils of Teide are two deep craters located one above the other. The surface of the entourage has different colors. Part of it consists of black volcanic material, often very interesting forms of lava bombs. To the southwest, small volcanoes are visible on the edge of the central caldera, then the Teno Mountains and an endless ocean of trade winds with the Atlantic Ocean hidden. nine0006
Part of the surface painted in red and yellow. The rock and mineral collector will probably get his money’s worth here. To the south, under the wall of mountains that form the edge of the central caldera, a narrow strip of road is visible, from which the beginning of this tour begins.
The path continues to the crater of the Pico Viejo volcano. However, performance depends on time (and enough water) as this extension means about 2 additional hours. nine0006

La Palma (Spain): La Cumbre Vieja volcano erupts

A volcano that erupted on one of Spain’s Canary Islands for the first time in 50 years has already engulfed some 100 homes, prompting the evacuation of thousands, the latest figures showed on Monday.
The volcano erupted on Sunday, after a week of heightened seismic activity. It is located on La Palma, the fifth-largest island in the Spanish archipelago that sits in the Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Morocco.
The eruption has forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people, including some 500 tourists, according to a Monday update from local officials.
Authorities said they were hopeful more people would not need to be evacuated.
Damage only material
Local TV station Radio Television Canaria (RTVC) showed footage of red-hot lava and dust emanating from the Cumbre Vieja National Park in the south of the island.
No fatalities have been reported but the volcano was still active on Monday, while some houses continued to burn.
Volcanologist Nemesio Perez said there were unlikely to be fatalities, adding that people had so far refrained from reckless behavior.
Around 100 houses were destroyed by Monday, Mariano Hernandez, president of La Palma’s council, told Cadena Ser radio.
Canary Islands regional President Angel Victor Torres told Spanish state broadcaster TVE that no injuries had been reported so far.
The fire brigade was brought in to fight forest fires caused by the eruption.
Flights to and from the Canaries — which are popular with European tourists — were continuing as normal, airport operator Aena said.
Swift evacuation operations
On Sunday, emergency services immediately began to evacuate around 2,000 residents, authorities said, having started moving those with reduced mobility earlier in the day.
Spain’s Civil Guard initially announced it may need to evacuate up to 10,000 residents, but a later update by authorities on Sunday said 5,000 evacuations may suffice for the time being.
“People are asked to be extremely careful and to stay away from the eruption zone to avoid needless risk,” the government had warned immediately after the eruption.
Sunday’s eruption follow a series of earth tremors this week, measured at 3.8-magnitude, whose vibrations were felt on the surface.
More than 22,000 tremors were recorded in the area — one of the most active volcanoes in the Canary Islands
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez flew to La Palma on Sunday evening to see the eruption for himself.
Earlier, he said state organizations were ready to support La Palma “in a coordinated manner.”
Itahiza Dominguez, head of seismology at Spain’s National Geology Institute, told RTVC that it was too early to tell how long this eruption would last.
He added that prior “eruptions on the Canary Islands lasted weeks or even months.”
La Palma has several volcanic craters including San Antonio (pictured)Image: Borja Suarez/REUTERS
Eruption area is sparsely populated
The island of La Palma, one of several in the Canary Islands group, has around 83,000 residents.
Along with Tenerife, La Palma is the most volcanically active of the islands.
Sunday’s eruption is the eighth since records began and the first on La Palma since 1971.
The last eruption on any of the Canary Islands occurred underwater off the coast of El Hierro island in 2011. That event lasted five months.
Unlike the better-known islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife, La Palma is not a popular tourist destination.

Holiday Weather Blog
Corralejo, Spain – June Weather
Weather like in Corralejo in June
Temperature
June is the start of peak tourist season in the town. During this month, the wind brings temperatures down slightly, making Corralejo the perfect holiday destination for anyone who wants to relax in the sunshine without it feeling too oppressive. The daily average temperature generally sits around 21°C (about 70°F). The low during this month will drop to 18°C (about 64°F) on average. The resort sees a high of 24°C (around 75°F) during the month as well.
Average Sunshine Hours
In June, the sun shines for around 11 hours each day, same as in May. There’s a 59 percent chance of having a sunny day and only a two percent chance of cloud cover on any given day. Generally, only 1mm of rain will fall during the month.
When visiting this island in Spain during this month, bring your beach clothes as it’s warm and ideal for sunbathing. You’ll want to stock up on sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s rays and be sure to bring sunglasses or a hat to cover your eyes. The evening temperatures are still moderate and warm, so you probably won’t need a jacket or sweater when out and about at night.
Average Sea Temperature
The average sea temperature in June is normally 21°C (about 70°F), which most will find pleasurable for taking a swim. The average humidity for the resort is around 70 percent, still fairly comfortable, especially with the breezes blowing across the island. More than likely that breeze will be blowing, with an 82 percent chance of a windy day.
The highest ever recorded temperature in June was a scorching 34°C (about 93°F) with the lowest being 13°C (around 55°F). However, it’s unlikely that these temperatures will occur and you can generally expect figures in the high teens and low twenties.
Take a look at the weather forecast here.

Caleta de Fuste, is purpose-built for tourism, besides the old fort, which is still worth being proud of among new developments. It is also kind of the only 18 hole golf course in Fuerteventura.
