Playa Grande – GoDominicanRepublic.com

Approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Puerto Plata city, between Río San Juan and Cabrera, this wide, two-kilometer-long (one mile) golden beach is known for its swells–good for surfers–and undertows in the winter, requiring extra care by not swimming too far off shore. On site, rows of local seafood shacks serve excellent lunch plates while the music echoes. Playa Grande’s perfect palm trees and golden beach landscape make it a photographer’s favorite.

The Local Favorite Surf Beach in Guanacaste

As part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande in Costa Rica is not just a beautiful beach, it’s an important beach for turtles and wildlife. It’s also one of the best beaches for surfers looking to score some fast and fun waves.

With tan colored sand and bright blue waters, you don’t have to be a surfer to fall in love with Playa Grande. Separated from Playa Tamarindo by a protected estuary, Grande offers travelers a less crowded beach to catch the perfect wave or enjoy a nice long walk during sunset time.

Location

How to Get to Playa Grande(Driving/4×4 required?)

You can use Google Maps or Waze as your GPS. If you want to go to the main parking lot, you can enter Hotel Las Tortugas as your destination. Along the drive once you get closer, you’ll see many signs for Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas.

This route does not require a 4×4, it is paved the whole way from Liberia Airport to the main entrance of Playa Grande. Do note that once you turn left in Matapalo towards Playa Grande, the road does get narrow and curvy so drive slowly and carefully.

You will see locals will drive very fast and may tailgate you, but just keep calm and drive how you feel comfortable. Just let them pass you on their own accord.

However, a 4×4 or 4wd is recommended if you do plan to explore the Guanacaste province and other areas of Costa Rica.

By Boat from Tamarindo

Even though Tamarindo and Grande are very close, it’s about a 30 minute drive from one to another as it’s separate by the estuary. Because of this, there is a way to get to Grande by Boat which is much faster for surfers if they live in Tamarindo.

The boat ride from Tamarindo beach to Grande beach across the estuary costs about $1 USD) one way. There are many locals with boats who can take you.

Many surfers will park at Tamarindo at the north end of the beach, take the boat to Grande and then boat back to Tamarindo after their surf session.

Please DO NOT swim across the river mouth as there are crocodiles there and there have been attacks before by people trying to walk/swim across. The river mouth connects to the Playa Grande estuary which is home to many crocodiles!

Playa Grande map. (Remember, this is the Playa Grande in Guanacaste).

Playa Grande is 64 kilometers (40 miles) and a 1 hour and 10 minute drive from Liberia International Airport.

Located along the Tamarindo Bay, Grande is perfect for those looking for a more low key beach away from the bustling Tamarindo town which is a 30 minute drive away.

Getting Around Playa Grande

The best way to get around Playa Grande is by renting a car. There are no public buses to Playa Grande and the area is very spread out. Since there isn’t really a town or town center with everything, you will have to drive a bit to get to a full size supermarket, pharmacy, bank and other services.

Parking

There is a good size parking lot at the main entrance to Playa Grande. You have to park in the area outside or along the street.

They charge 2000 colones fee to park.

There will be some local “parking guards” sitting around the parking lot. However, do not leave any valuables in the car, roll up your windows and lock your doors.

On weekends, the parking lot may get very crowded so you may have to park further down the street so be even more vigilant about not leaving any valuables in your car.

Fee

No fee to go to the beach but there is the parking fee.

Services

There is a beachfront restaurant called Taco Star at the main parking lot but no other services (public bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, etc.)

Playa Grande Beach

Playa Grande is a long, vast beach with not much shade but soft tan sand and sparkling blue waters.

If you plan to spend the day there, we do recommend to bring your own umbrella if possible because there aren’t any trees for shade and it is very hot!

But if you’re a surfer, you’ll in the right spot. Grande is known for having excellent, constant waves for both intermediate and advanced surfers. Local surfers love Playa Grande, thanks to its many surf points and breaks.

When there’s a swell, Grande is big. They named this beach very appropriately! (Grande means big in Spanish). Waves are fast and strong with left and right hand tubes at the many breaks.

You can find waves for beginners up to advanced surfers, for both longboarders and short boarders. For long boarders, we like to go to the Casitas point or by the estuary/river mouth (south end of the beach).

To get to the Casitas point, you can take the boat from Tamarindo. Or you can drive to Palm Beach Estates and park there. On Google Maps, it’s marked as “Playa Grande parking for walk to south beach access at river.”

Surfers at Playa Grande

This is why many locals will take the boat from Tamarindo to Grande as it’ll drop you off right as the Casitas surf break and you don’t have to worry about your car.

Things to do at Playa Grande

Waves are not the nicest for swimming and it can get big and strong. Visitors also need to be aware of rip currents at Playa Grande. Snorkeling is not possible at this beach.

Surf Lessons

If you want to take a surf lesson, check out Frijoles Locos, Mojo or A Cachete Surf. Group lessons are around $50 USD per person and you can also choose private lessons.

Playa Ventanas and Playa Carbon

Playa Ventanas neighbors Playa Grande to the north which is accessible by car or walking on the beach. Many people like to get their 10,000 steps in by walking all the way from Grande to Ventanas and back. It’s a long but really nice walk.

If you want an even longer walk to work up more of a sweat, you can keep going up to Playa Carbon. There you can do some snorkeling and play in the tidepools during low tide.

Something else you have to do at the beach is to watch the sunset. From Playa Grande, you get a full view of the sun going down and it is just stunning. Just remember that as Playa Grande is part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, the beach is closed after dark.

Turtle Nestings

As part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande is a turtle nesting beach for leatherback turtles. The season is October to February with the peak time in December and January.

However, the number of nesting turtles has decreased unfortunately and they are not as abundant as they used to be. You can inquire about a turtle viewing turtle during the season to see if any companies or guides will take you though.

Otherwise, it is better to go to Ostional Wildlife Refuge to see nesting turtles (2 hour drive one way). Highly recommended the months June – December (must go with a guide).

Sometimes in the months of February and March, turtles have shown up randomly to nest on Playa Grande beach. And in the early mornings, the hatchlings come out and make their way to the sea. It’s not often and it’s not common, but it has happened.

Day Trips from Playa Grande

If you plan to base yourself in Playa Grande for your vacation, there are many fun day trips from Playa Grande and places to visit. Here are our recommended day trips, all these require at least a 1 hour drive except for Flamingo and Black Stallion Estates.

Diamante Eco Adventure Park (ziplining, animal sanctuary, cultural tour): Adventure park with an oceanview zipline, animal sanctuary, local house with cultural tours, botanical garden and beach club.

Hacienda El Viejo Wetlands (culture, nature): Family owned sugar cane plantation and private wildlife refuge. Offers cultural, rum and wildlife watching safari tours. Get our El Viejo discount in this link!

Palo Verde National Park: This national park protects the important Tempisque valley and river, home to a plethora of river birds, reptiles and migratory birds. Excellent place for a safari wildlife watching boat tour.

Fishing and Snorkeling from Flamingo: Book a private fishing and snorkeling tour from Flamingo for a fun day out on the water to see secluded beaches and snorkel. You can also do some deep sea fishing along the way to catch dinner.

Scuba diving: Go on a discovery dive if you’re not certified or for a 2 tank dive at the Catalinas Islands. Departure is from Flamingo marina, just a 30 minute drive from Grande and you’ll have opportunities to swim among fish, turtles, manta rays and sharks!

Since Grande and Tamarindo are so close, you can check our things to do in Tamarindo for more ideas of activities and day trips.

Beaches to Visit from Playa Grande

From Playa Grande, you have a grand selection of amazing beaches to visit. Here are our top picks.

Conchal beach, Avellanas, Flamingo, Langosta and Potrero. Then there are a ton of hidden, more locals beaches like Danta, Penca, Prieta, Mina and Real.

You can watch our video below to see what some of these beaches look like!

Where to Stay

There are a few decent surf hotels and lodges such as Ripjack Inn, Flor y Bambu Glamping, Sol y Luna Lodge and Grateful Hotel. For unique lodging, check out Pipe House which has rooms made out of recycled concrete tubes.

Grateful Hotel sometimes has live music on Sunday so it’s a nice spot to go for some nightlife and entertainment.

Additionally, Playa Grande has many vacation rentals which we recommend for families or large groups. Check out Booking.com or Airbnb, especially if you’re visiting with a large group or family. Look for neighborhoods like Palm Beach Estates, Las Ventanas de Playa Grande and the one on the way to Playa Ventanas (Casa Tres Cocos/Naranja/).

Where to Eat

Pots n Bowls, Cafe Mar Azul, Cafe de Pueblo, Kike’s Place, El Huerto Pizzeria and the Great Waltini’s are good places to eat. RipJack Inn also has a restaurant. Pinto Quemado is a  good barbecue place.

If you like craft beer, we recommend to stop by Brothers of Ale in Huacas and Las Olas Brewing in Playa Grande.

Visiting Playa Grande

You can stay in Playa Grande for a few nights or use it as a home base for your Costa Rica vacation. Or just visit Playa Grande for a day from Tamarindo. Either way, it is a must see beach in the Northern Guanacaste region.

View of Grande beach

Our best tip for staying in Playa Grande is to rent a car if you plan to stay for more than one night.

Supermarkets in Playa Grande

There is a mid-size supermarket called The Store on the way to Playa Grande. For bigger full size supermarkets, you will have to go into Tamarindo or Huacas.

Our personal recommendation is to get supplies after you land at Liberia Airport. There is a Walmart and a Peri Mart in Plaza Santa Rosa in Liberia, about a 10 minute drive from the airport and both are full size supermarkets.

Groceries are a bit cheaper in Liberia and then for other things you need during your trip, you can go to The Store or any of the other supermarkets in Huacas or Tamarindo.

Shopping, Health, Etc.

There is a medical clinic in Playa Grande called Playa Grande Clinica, part of the Beachside Clinic.

For shopping, there is a cute swimwear shop called Bahia Swimwear.

This 2 km wide golden beach is located about 120 km northeast of Puerto Plata city. It is known for big waves (what you need for surfing) and undercurrents in winter, because of which you should not swim too far from the coast. A similar letter with all the detailed information and your contacts will be sent to your future driver, so that he will be informed in advance about the date and route of the trip. In a personal meeting, you don’t even have to explain anything to him!

“Marathon of New Year’s Affairs” – GBOU DPO ICBC

The original idea of the project

Paying more attention to educational work is a requirement of the time. In the difficult conditions of the pandemic, many guys have become divided. Their social connection between classmates and teachers weakens, they become, as it were, on their own. They do not feel involved in the events that take place at school. This is especially true for middle and high school students. On the eve of the New Year holidays, our teaching staff decided that it was necessary to organize a common cause in which every schoolchild, every preschooler and, if possible, parents would be involved. nine0005

Since the New Year is the most beloved, beautiful and long-awaited holiday for all children and adults, the idea of creating a marathon called “New Year’s Deeds Marathon” arose. Since it was important to involve the largest number of students in the complex, all the creative teams that exist today in the educational organization should have taken part in the event.

The marathon includes the work of creative teams:
– variety dance studio “Elegy”
– ZEFiR ballroom dance studio
– Proryv creative association
– theater studio
– choir studios
– Hit Parade vocal and pop studio
– Musical Lounge vocal studio
– Hobbylandiya decorative art studio »
– creative studio for children with disabilities “Creative Workshop”
– art studio “Workshop of Creativity”
– the work of class teachers, educators, organizing teachers, teachers of English and Italian, teachers of fine arts and music. nine0005

From idea to result

The purpose of marathon is to form socially valuable practical skills, experience of vigorous activity and development of creative abilities for successful socialization of the individual.

The desire of a child to participate in activities is the main and very difficult task for the implementation of such creative projects. Both the child, and the parents, and the teacher want to see the result of their activities. Therefore, the teaching staff began to work on a careful selection of materials for events within the marathon, involving students in the development of ideas. nine0005

It was also important to take into account that many children are at home. And for them it was necessary to come up with appropriate tasks. And for children with special needs to create special conditions for the realization of their creative potential.

On the school page in VKontakte, starting from December 20, the countdown of the days until the New Year began. Every day, new events, contests, congratulations, crafts and drawings, poems, songs, master classes, everything that children created and created at school or at home were posted on this page. nine0005

Kindergartens and schools hosted concerts, performances, quizzes, flash mobs, festive events. At the same time, the guys were preparing for a grandiose New Year’s online concert in two parts. This was the culminating result of the work of the New Year’s Marathon. So our entire large school family was able to implement this grandiose project in one breath.

Beneficial effects from the implementation of the project

The high motivation of all participants in this project, as well as a positive emotional background, creativity, spirit of ownership and unity gave our organization the following positive effects:

– rallying the children’s, parental team, teaching staff and school administration to implement the plan;
– improvement and diversity of communication skills of students, teachers, parents through the use of modern types of information technologies;
– involvement of a large number of children with special needs in creative activities;
– practical implementation of the creative abilities of students and the disclosure of opportunities that realize their potential; nine0009 – the use of new methods and types of creative activity in the conditions of distancing and remote communication;
– increasing students’ interest in artistic associations;
– in the context of the need to use modern technologies for mutual education of children and parents, children and teachers, a significant increase in technical competencies;
– the formation of a favorable socio-cultural environment, the purpose of which is the development, self-affirmation and self-realization of the individual.

A Moldavian sportsman spoke about winning the half marathon in Tenerife

The start and finish area was located on the eastern side of the island of Tenerife, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife of the same name, near San Sebastian Avenue. The route ran along the picturesque coast.

Moldova and the Sporter sports club were represented at this marathon by the athlete and coach Liviu Croitoru who managed to take the third prize in the overall standings in the half marathon distance of 21 km 0975 m. Liviu shared his impressions of the marathon with the correspondent of Sporter Sergey Petrenko .

Please tell me why Spain, Tenerife?

My passion is to run marathons in different countries. In the spring I ran in Cyprus, in Romania at the resort of Mamaia, in Brasov, Chile – you can’t list everything. And now the turn has come to Tenerife.

Can you say that you are trying to collect impressions from all the marathons? Do you discover new places for yourself with the help of running? nine0129

Yes, when choosing the next marathon, I try to choose an interesting direction in order to combine traveling with professional sports. Thus, with a successful performance, I manage to earn money and travel.

How is the marathon in Tenerife different from all the others in which you have already managed to participate?

The track laid out in Tenerife is very different from the others – a very unusual track. The first eight kilometers fall on the city, which is replete with ups and downs, various turns. This confuses the athlete, makes it difficult to tune in to the optimal pace and calculate their strength. Also, these first kilometers are exhausting with urban pavement – asphalt is replaced by paving stones. nine0005

Then, at the exit from the city, the route is laid along the coast. There is another problem – the sun and the wind. It’s 26 degrees in the Canary Islands now! This is not Chisinau with eight degrees. By the way, now we have ideal conditions for running. There, on the contrary, when overcoming the distance, thirst is very tormenting, I want to jump into the ocean, it is very hot. Again, the track was not smooth – constant ups and downs.

Therefore, I think I even wrote about it on Facebook, if you want to run in hot countries, then you should train there too. My reality is that I have been running in the cold for two months now. This means that usually I had two pairs of pants, thermal clothing, a hat, gloves, and my body had already rebuilt. Yes, I arrived in Tenerife four days before the start to acclimatize and train, but these days were still not enough for a full preparation. nine0005

Nevertheless, you still managed to take third place in the overall standings, for which I congratulate you …

Yes. From the very beginning, five athletes separated, which included me. At the tenth kilometer, the Polish athlete broke away from us. I continued to fight for second place. Almost to the end of the distance we ran with him. Three kilometers before the finish line, I already felt that the heat was doing its job, my legs were blocked. My opponent, a Spaniard, was in a more familiar environment, so I decided not to fight him and run at a pace that was accessible to me. The maximum that I squeezed 30-40 seconds, but it still would not be enough to take second place. Therefore, I am satisfied with the third place. nine0005

Third place is a very decent result and a prize. How many participants were there?

I can’t say for sure – about two thousand athletes. Based on the time that I showed, the result is not very good. Well, the fact that I took third place is good. The opponents were very strong. There was also a separate nomination – track record. To install it, it was necessary to leave one hour and eleven minutes. Many aimed to break the record, started intensively and also quickly failed. We were in the group of leaders, at first we walked with some advance of the set time, at a pace of one hour and nine minutes, but we failed to keep it, when we left the city, the pace immediately dropped. Heat, wind and hot asphalt made adjustments to the final result. nine0005

At what stage of the race did you realize that you would be in the podium?

At the beginning, before the starting salvo, it seemed to me that I would break away from the rest quite easily. The athletes were breathing heavily, the heat, as I said, was very strong. However, after the fifth kilometer, I realized that the opponents are still strong and will not give up without a fight. Then, nevertheless, I managed to break away, where I fought for second place with the Spaniard. Well, confidence in third place came only at the finish line. Because there are a lot of cases when a hundred meters before the finish line, there is a cramp and the athlete is no longer able to overcome this distance. nine0005

Even though you won the prize, it sounds like you’re a little upset. After all, you even planned to break the Tenerife record. Does this mean that you will return in order to improve your result in this particular place?

This is the most interesting question. Because I’ve been in a similar situation. Last year, at the marathon in Mamaia (Romania), I was third, so I came to it this year and took first. In Brasov, the opposite situation has developed – last year I was the winner, this year I came second, so I plan to return there again. nine0005

For Tenerife – not decided yet. But everything is possible. Everything is conducive to the fact that I could show a better result in Tenerife than now. After all, all summer after I had an Achilles tendon injury, at a marathon in Chile, I was recovering. I did not train in the heat, I started training only after the Chisinau Marathon, so I was not at the peak of my form. You can say that I am still recovering. So, I want to return, there is potential, the main thing is to have time to prepare. Maybe in a year … in general, while I think. nine0005

So, is there any hope that Moldova will take the first place in Tenerife?

Yes, absolutely! But if I return, it will be for a marathon, because there is a different motivation and a higher prize fund.

At the beginning of the interview, you said that you enjoy the fact that you combine marathons abroad, discovering new places for yourself and sports achievements. How would you motivate other amateur athletes to decide on such sports tourism? nine0129

I like the philosophy of Sporter Travel, which is to develop sports tourism. Because when you play sports, the body produces endorphins, they are also called hormones of happiness. Anyone who has given themselves a significant load at least a little will certainly confirm my words. Therefore, passing a marathon in a new place, you are already doomed to perceive everything positively. This is a very common practice around the world. Many people create, like me, a whole tour of participating in marathons in different countries. If these are amateur athletes, then they try to run one marathon for the result, and the rest are already running, enjoying the environment in which they are immersed. nine0005

Moreover, when they go to foreign marathons, it is always a group trip, which can significantly reduce accommodation and other expenses. Also, when you go to international marathons, you get the opportunity to communicate with representatives of another culture.

Therefore, we can say that running is not just a sport – it is a philosophy of life.

Canaries for christmas: A guide to your dreamy, warm Christmas in the Canaries

Erkunden Sie an Weihnachten die Kanarischen Inseln mit Cunard

Tropische Traditionen

Neujahrsessen

Schwimmend ins neue Jahr

Der St. Andrew’s Day (30. November) wird noch heute von Jugendlichen gefeiert, die lautstark Dosenfäden durch die Straßen ziehen.

Description

A simple comedy about civil marriage

As you know, the vast majority of women consider civil marriage not a very reliable family haven. And, on the contrary, the vast majority of men for some reason hold the exact opposite opinion.

The heroes of the play “Canary Soup” lived in a civil marriage for 13 long years, until they dared to cross the threshold of the famous state institution called the registry office. But will a white dress, a wedding march and a stamp in the passport become a guarantee of their family happiness? Only five minutes remain before the registration of marriage, and the heroes still have the opportunity to look ahead into their future legal family life. nine0003

No more football will be played in France this millennium. The teams play the last matches before the Catholic Christmas and go on a break. The central games of the 22nd round were held in Marseille and Bordeaux.

In Bordeaux, the local club hosted Nantes, whose players were nicknamed canaries for their green and yellow colors. Fans of the hosts counted on the victory of their club. In the first half, Bordeaux attacked more often. Pauleta had an excellent score to score a goal, but hit the goalkeeper from close range. Nantes used their chance. Da Rocha gave a pass to Viorel Moldovan, who scored a goal in the 26th minute. nine0003

The hosts went into the second half with redoubled energy and immediately laid siege to the gates of Nantes. Bordeaux had many chances, but they failed to finish the attacks. In favor of the hosts was that at the very beginning of the second half, Moldovan was injured, who had to leave the field. The Bordeaux coach made substitutions that were supposed to strengthen the attack, but this did not bring any result. At the end of the second half, even the Bordeaux goalkeeper Rama went on the attack in order to help the partners equalize. The hosts opened up, which the “canaries” took advantage of. Carrière scored the second goal in stoppage time by the referee, and Nantes celebrated a 2-0 victory. nine0003

Another crucial game between Olympique and Monaco took place on Wednesday at the Velodrome stadium. Both teams don’t shine this season, but the traditions of these teams in the French league live on and keep the players fighting. At the 15th minute, the Monegasques opened the scoring: Marco Simone scored. But two accurate shots by George Weah brought victory to the Olympic. Note that this is the third victory of the “Olympic” under the leadership of Javier Clemente.

“Lyon” met at the stadium “Gerland” with the club “Saint-Etienne”. The guests could not enter the field goalkeeper Levitsky, who suspects that he has a false passport. The hosts again scored a quick goal in the 3rd minute. Dorasoo filed a corner, Marle took the ball on his head and threw it at Anderson, who used the opportunity. However, Alex equalized in the second half. By the way, the Brazilian was also forbidden to enter the field on suspicion of having a false passport, but he played. And yet the victory remained with the rivals of “Spartacus”. Delmotte scored the decisive goal on 90 minute.

The Strasbourg-Metz match was abandoned in the 67th minute when a firecracker hit the assistant referee’s head. After that, the teams were sent to the locker room, and the match was finally abandoned with the score 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

Weather in balearics in october: Balearic Islands Weather in October

What is the best time of year to visit the Balearic Islands?

When asking “what is the best time of the year to visit the Balearic Islands?”, it´s impossible get only one right answer. The Balearic archipelago is a wonderful destination all throughout the 12 months as the climate, purely Mediterranean, is temperate and the sun shines more than 110 days a year.

The weather in the Balearic Islands is one of the most pleasant we can find in Spain since it is not very cold in winter nor too hot in summer.

Taking as reference the island of Mallorca, the average maximum temperature is 22 degrees and the minimum of 14. As for the rainfall, these are scarce since it only rains, on average, about 53 days a year. This allows the islands to offer more than 2,779 hours of sun along the year.

Nonetheless, depending on the purpose of your trip, a recommendation for one season or the other could be made. For example, if what you want is to sunbathe and enjoy the coves, you should travel during summer.

To help you find the ideal time for your trip to the Balearic Islands we have analyzed the climate of different times of the year and, based on it, suggested some of the activities that you can carry out with that weather.

    Spring – summer

It’s sunny, the temperatures rise and it rains a lot less. It is the ideal time to go to the beach, to do kayak routes, to dive, to sail and … in general, to be outdoors, to enjoy the nature and the landscape of the islands.

The good weather begins in May, when the average temperature is already around 18 degrees. These reach their highest peak in the month of August, with an average of 26 degrees, but the rest of the summer months remain more or less the same. In September it drops to 23 and in October the average is still in the low 20s, so the summer in the Balearic Islands is a little longer.

In fact, the months of June and September are considered the best ones to visit the Balearic Islands, as good weather remains but there are far fewer people than in July or August. The coves will be less crowded and you will be able to enjoy the landscape almost in solitude.

Regarding the rain, you won’t have to worry. On average, in May it rains four days a month and in July this is reduced to only one. In October the chances increase, but the average is still only seven days. In summary, you can leave your umbrella home.

    Autumn – winter

The average temperature in this period descends but never under the 10 degrees. The coldest months are, by far, January and February with an average around 8 degrees. These are also the months when it rains more and there are more cloudy days.

In any case, this should not an obstacle to enjoy the Balearic Islands. On the contrary, this time is ideal to practice many of the activities offered by the islands. For example: visiting small villages, workshops of local artisans, museums, hiking, cycling and even see the snow on top of the Sierra de Tramuntana in Mallorca.

In the Balearic Islands you will find the ideal destination for your holidays, regardless of the time of year in which you visit them.

    Weather in Palma de Mallorca

Palma is a great place to visit all year round thanks to its geographical location in the Balearics, which promises milder weather than continental Spain. Mallorca is extremely popular in the summer months of June, July and August. This is when temperatures peak and sea conditions are at their best for swimming. However, beaches around the island can get packed with tourists. To avoid the crowds, visit in spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) when the city is relatively quiet and temperatures are pleasant.

Restaurants in Canary Islands | Fodor’s Travel

Canarian cuisine is based on the delicious rockfish that abound near the coast, and its specialties are worth searching out. A typical meal begins with a hearty stew, such as potaje canario (a stew of vegetables, potatoes, and garbanzo beans), rancho canario (vegetables and meat), and potaje de berros (watercress soup). Canarians eat the porridge-like gofio (made with corn or another grain and milk or broth), though it’s hard to find in restaurants. The next course is fresh native fish, the best of which are vieja, cherne, and sama, all firm-flesh white rockfish. Accompanying the fish are papas arrugadas (literally, “wrinkled potatoes”), tiny potatoes native to the Canaries boiled in salty water so that salt crystals form on them as they dry.

Other specialties include cabrito (roast baby goat) and conejo (rabbit), both served in salmorejo, a slightly spicy paprika sauce. Finally, no Canarian meal is complete without a dab of mojo picón, a spicy sauce made with pimientos (red chili peppers), garlic, and tomatoes. Most restaurants serve mojo with each main course, and Canarians heap it liberally on dishes as varied as fish and papas arrugadas. The tamer version is mojo verde, made with cilantro and parsley. Another island specialty is goat cheese, made best in La Palma.

Canarian wines are surprisingly good and varied. Try the young reds and whites on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, where wine production is centuries old—the Malmsey wines from Lanzarote were a favorite with Shakespeare’s Falstaff. On the stronger side, the Canaries are famous for their dark rum, and several new liqueurs (flavored with coffee, cocoa, or hazelnut) have grown in popularity over the last few years.

▷TOP 5 Food Companies in the Canary Islands

The top food companies in the Canary Islands are part of the archipelago’s culture. Discover them!

The top food companies in the Canary Islands are, undoubtedly, among the select group of businesses that have left a mark in every Canarian throughout modern history and form part of its culture and day-to-day life.

In fact, most of them have contributed to the food trade in the archipelago, a region that has always had to import products for its survival. For this reason, many of these companies were the first to implement a modern marketing campaign.

That’s why in this new Coco Solution article we are going to pay them a tribute by giving our marketer point of view. But first, a look on Canary Islands modern advertising history is needed, right? We thought so…

Like in many others in other parts of the world, the food sector entered the lives of thousands of islanders with catchy ads that got people’s attention from the very first moment. Are you ready to discover more about them?

What’s so special about these companies?

The great demand for products and its low availability in the Canary Islands made this kind of business enjoy a great fame for many years in the archipelago. Not for nothing, the first soft drinks, sweets, or chocolates, among others, were appreciated from the beginning.

The top food companies in the Canary Islands gave a quality plus to society, specially as they had large distribution centers in order to transport products even quicker to their final destination. Thus, even more direct and indirect jobs were created, contributing to the economy.

    Part of Canarian culture

The most important thing is that all of these companies enjoyed lots of fame as their commercials were transmitted through television, a device that gathered all family together every day. Therefore, these products have been with Canarian people along the years.

It’s not surprising that when Canary islanders travel to other parts of Spain one of the first things they do is looking for those essential products in their every day life. Some of them even are very famous to other Spaniards.

It is more difficult to stay on top than to get there

As in life, the most difficult part isn’t reaching the top, but staying there. Obviously, international companies with (almost) infinite budget can afford big marketing campaigns, but sometimes local companies have a better understanding of their consumers.

That’s the reason why, even today, there are several food companies that have more reputation than global companies like Coca-Cola, Nestlé or even Bacardi. Do you want to discover which are they?

Top 5 food companies in the Canary Islands

There are 5 food businesses in the Canarian archipelago that have been leading the market during the years. Probably, if we search for their products in local homes, 9 out of 10 will be there. Let’s get started!

    1. Tirma

Tirma has been making products for the food market in the Canary Islands since 1941. Taking advantage of the many difficulties of several companies to enter the insular market, Tirma managed to put itself at the top of many food products. They provide varied products such as:

    • Coffee
    • Chocolates
    • Cocoa
    • Biscuits
    • Chocolate bars
    • Candies
    • Marmalade
    • Creams

    2. Bandama

If you ask any Canarian what the Bandama cookies are… their mouths will water immediately! This company founded in 1958 has been commercializing its products all across the Canary Islands since then.

    3. Eidetesa

Did someone say sweet? Yes! Eidetesa was in charge of introducing the first industrial bakery products to the islands. In addition, Eidetesa played an important role in the distribution of Panrico products in the Canary Islands, bringing these famous products to all bakeries and shops where sweets were sold.

    4. Arehucas

Arehucas is, undoubtedly, the biggest and most famous rum company in Spain. Indeed, you can find all its rums in almost every supermarket in the country. In these days all Canarians enjoy its flavour and it’s not surprising to see Arehucas in traditional festivals, pilgrimages or events.
